News Teams Players Links

January, 2001

1/31/01 Pete Abraham:  ' toms@postandpartners.com should check his grasp of basic facts before he makes statements. I didn't write that Mount Vernon was the team to beat, I wrote that "if "(Tuesday's) game is any indication . . . " There's a difference.  As White Plains' coach Spencer Mayfield has said several times, until somebody knocks them off in the postseason, Mount Vernon is the team to beat. Tom also writes: "Remember this, it was Mt, Vernon who voted in favor of this years new alignment. They wanted to go all over the place and play tough competition." This is completely false. The Section 1 re-alignment was voted on by the  league principals and athletic directors and Mount Vernon was very much against it. It also had nothing to do with their wanting to travel. The re-alignment was put in place long before Mount Vernon compiled its 2000-01 schedule. Many of the basketball coaches, including Bob Cimmino, were opposed to the re-alignment. But the decision was made above them. Those are the facts. Why Tom has an axe to grind with Mount Vernon is beyond me. I would hope this forum would be above such petty behavior.'

1/31/01 Doug Koster, Mr. Basketball Inc:  '...we run national summer tournaments that draw teams from coast-to-coast -- Mr. Basketball Tournaments.  We've had teams from several teams from NJ, Mass, NH, Conn, Ohio, NC, SC, that have ventured to Kearney for the Mr. Basketball & Miss Basketball tournaments...we offer unbeatable facilities (not quite MSG, but for summer hoops it is great!), great college exposure, and strong national competition!'

1/31/00  School Sports:  National Boys’ Basketball Top 25 includes # 3 Camden,  # 20 St. Patrick, and # 23 CBA.

1/31/00 toms@postandpartners.com:  Mt. Vernon is not the team to beat in Section 1 this year, White Plains took care of them a few weeks ago.

1/31/01  BRO: Passaic Tech (15-0) sends a strong message.

1/31/01 NJO: Blair sets its sights on banner season.

1/31/01 NJ Hoops:  St. Pat's tops Blair 65 - 58.

1/31/01  Peter Abraham, The Journal News ... the Mount Vernon boys basketball team.

1/31/01 Hoop Scoop:  '... the biggest lock among the elite juniors nationally, at least according to our New York City Editor Ron Naclerio, is 6'6 Jr Leonard Cooke from Old Tappan (H.S.) NY to St. John's. "He shows up for more St. John's games than I do," says Naclerio. But don't write that one down just yet, because grades are a question mark and Cooke already is several years older than his class. In other words, we think the chances are better than 50-50 that Cooke will by-pass college and go straight to the NBA after a year of prep school next year at Oakdale (St. Thomas More) CT.'

1/30/01  Frank:  'East Orange High School stunned # 6 Seton Hall Prep 58-52 at East Orange High School. I had thought from the beginning of the summer that this was a rebuilding year for the Pirates and they were not a top 20 club. However I was beginning to change my mind after last week's 19 point victory over #13 Columbia. But even a rebuilding team should have been able to handle EO.'

1/30/01  Satch:  I was impressed when I saw a couple of players this past week.

1/30/01 Newsday:  St. Mary's, St. Dominic Bumped Up to 'A'.

1/30/01 djp:  'In an unprecedented move, the NYSCSHAA has reclassified St. Mary's and St. Dominic's as Class A, in the middle of the season no less, which would mean that St. Mary's would be unable to defend it's Class B title. Both schools qualify as Class B schools according to the NYS definition for enrollment. Imagine these programs being singled out for being so successful. I can understand taking the matter up into discussion, but before the beginning of a season please. Let's follow some of this pretzel logic through here for a moment. Adelphi is doing pretty well, currently nationally ranked number 1 at the Division II level. Thank goodness Tom Murray is not sitting on some kangaroo court making decisions for the NYCAC, he would have Adelphi moved right into some Division I conference immediately. Let's see now Duke and Stanford seem to have pretty consistently good teams year after year, perhaps Tom Murray would have them playing in this years NBA finals. Imagine the possibilities? Or how about let's leave well enough alone, and take this discussion up again before next season.'

1/30/01 Nathan Blue:  'I'm very happy to announce that Grady's 5-10 PG Woody Souffrant committed yesterday. Yes! Hofstra University. The Hofstra coaching staff has done it again. Picking one of the better guards in the state. Soufrant has been forever known for that 3 pter he hit with one second remaining in the PSAL Championship victory at MSG Freshman year. The shot wasn't to win the game. But it was a tough shot.  That showed what to expect from him in the years to come. Besides talented coach Jack Ringel. He played with Flatbush Youth Organization a very fine team.

He then worked on his game every summer and winter. Woody is a hardworking player. If not for that and the fact he never makes excuses of how small he is....he might be in D2.  But hard work in the classroom and on the court. Got him a scholarship to Hofstra University. Now with continued hard work. Who knows how far Woody Souffrant will go?'

1/30/01  Glenn Bynes:  'This is an update on how some of the Wildcat players are doing this year.Ed Behnen and Sloane Baptiste are unofficial walk-ons at Rutgers. Lovell Williams is doing well at Lackawanna Jr College. Sean Lynch is carrying a young Delaware Valley team this year with his tremendous outside shooting. David Pearson is scoring and grabbing a lot of rebounds for Matawan HS. Ryan Carey along with Dan Dugan has led Summit HS to a 10-2 record and one of the top Group II teams in the state. Everett Morgan just became eligible after transferring to National Ranked St. Pats. Eric Bynes has just became eligible and has been in the rotation for a hot New Brunswick HS team. Chaise Foy and Todd Dorsey are key players for Montgomery HS another quality Group II team. Kevin Burns has been a leader for St. Mary's HS since scoring 39 pts on opening night. Paul Gross has been a valued starter for S. Plainfield HS especially scoring 25 pts against St. Peters of NB recently. Pat Devaney is one of the starters for a St. Augustine team that recently beat nationally ranked St. Pat's of Elizabeth on a buzzer beater.'

1/30/01 daburg@juno.com:  'Hi I visit your site once in a while but yet everytime I do you never have anything on Junior guard Anthony Drejaj from SHP..I think he is a great talent but many people do not have him rated that high..he is leading his team with 19ppg 4ast and 4stls a game and him and Jamar Nutter have the team undefeated so far...have u seen him play? what do u think? ' Web note:  If you try the site's search engine above, there are 14 references for Drejaj and 25 for Nutter.

1/30/01  Daily News: Woody Souffrant Chooses Hofstra With Pride.

1/29/01  Coach Jack Ringel:  'I am happy to announce that Woody Souffrant has verbally committed to Hofstra University. He joins ex Grady players Norman Richardson and Roberto Gittens at Hostra. During his official visit last weekend, he cited the coaching staff, team work ethic and business school as prime reasons for his decision.'

1/29/01 A Long Island Rice Fan:  'I watched yesterdays game and disagree that Tim Doyle showed composure. The Dom's won because Mike Grinnon played a super offense game and Rice played a lousy defense game against him. Doyle made many bad passes trying to use his height advantage when pressed and did not look good. If Rice stopped  Grinnon or limited his points, Rice wins.'

1/28/01  Frank:  'Form held in the preliminary round of the 55th Essex County Tournament with all of the favorites making the most of home court advanatage.'  Details on the Essex County Tournament page.

1/28/01 Rich Gallagher:  'There was a major upset at the Red Fox Shootout in Poughkeepsie on Saturday, as Poughkeepsie beat previously-unbeaten White Plains, 71-66. Poughkeepsie opened up a 13-point lead after three quarters and held off a White Plains rally to secure the win. Taron Mizell scored 28 and Justin Skipwith chipped in with 23 for the winners. Markus Austin led White Plains with 26. Poughkeepsie is now 11-1 and has to be considered a serious threat in the Sectionals next month. White Plains drops to 14-1.

In girls' action, perennial power Our Lady of Lourdes (Poughkeepsie) trounced highly-regarded St. Peter's (Staten Island), 71-45. Lourdes led 39-16 at halftime and coasted to the victory. Lourdes is now 12-1. The loss leaves St. Peter's with a 10-2 record.'

1/28/01  Insiders Report:  Jason Fraser Loves To Rock.  And Mamadou Diakhate ripped off 25 points, including 15 in the decisive first quarter, to lead St. Mary's High School to a blowout victory over Lincoln High School, 86-68.

1/28/01 EDavi11812:  'Today when I stepped into Loughlin Gym, the game had already started. The score was McClancy 8, Loughlin 0. Then with about 3:47 left int he first quarter the score was McClancy 8 Loughlin 22. Loughlin went on a 22 -0 run. They got a burst of energy from Ted Munford. 3 pointer after 3 pointer. From then on, it was Loughlin all the way. Kevin Bishop and Tremaine Stevens fought hard, but it wasn't enough to stop the Lions' Mighty roar. At the end of the game it was 84-57. # 36 Kevin Bishop finished with 21 points, and # 21 Tremaine Stevens with 13 points for McClancy. # 34 Curtis Sumpter finished with 22 points and 13 boards, # 54Timeke Mitchell had 16 points and 10 boards, # 41 Ted Munford finished with 13 points and 7 assists and Jason Olive with 10 points.'

1/28/01  80 Park is the defending Biddie IS8 champ and they looked it this morning.  After one quarter against Hempstead the score was 15 - 0.  The final gap was not much more than those 15 points since 80 Park's coach Craig Keyes used all his players.  When his guard trio of Malik Boothe (6 pts),  Ryan Davis (8 pts) and Ian Umpierre (6 pts) are together on the court, the can be devastating.  They are all small, quick, aggressive defenders with surprising court vision,  tricky handles and clever passing.  Park's K Williams (9 pts) and N Walsh (8 pts) benefitted from that passing while Hempstead's Josef Khalik had 17 points in the losing effort. More on the IS8 Winter Classic, 2001 page.

1/27/01  Mail from Steve Finamore.

1/27/01  The two IS8 morning biddie games and the first midget game were blowouts.  The Elmont Panthers pounced on the Gauchos' biddies 37 - 14 while the Wolfpack devoured the Rifles 39 - 10. For the Elmont Panthers Sylvan Landesburg is the star and he again led them today.

The Rising Stars had an 11 - 8 lead after one before the Riverside Church midgets ran away for a 67 - 32 victory.  The Stars' trio of Holland Adams,  Milan Pedrovic and Ryan Eisner played solidly, but were overwhelmed by RC's depth.  Brandon Brock was a Church force throughout the game - he's a widebody who has a nice handle and surprising quickness.  Willis Kettrell,  Marcus Diggs, Lamar Wilson and Codi Oliver all helped the Chuch's cause.

Rosters on the IS8 Winter Classic, 2001 page.

1/27/01  Frank:  'The preliminary round of the 55th annual Essex County Tournament gets underway today at 8 different locations involving 16 teams. Some friends of mine and myself have been following Essex County basketball for about forty years and can't ever remember so many schools with such outstanding won-loss records.

Here are the top seeds and their records: 1. Shabazz 14-1 2. Seton Hall 12-0 3. Weequahic 10-1 4. Columbia 11-2 5. East Side 9-4 6.  Bishop Francis 10-2 7. Irvington 8-5 8. Montclair 7-4 9.  Orange 9-2 10, West Orange 11-2 11. Clifford Scott 7-4 12. Newark Tech 10-2 13. Barringer 6-4 14. Science 6-3 15. West Side 7-4

Today's games: North 13th Street Tech 7-4 at Bloomfield Tech 4-4. Livingston 5-6 at West side 7-4. Verona 10-2 at Science 6-3. East Orange 4-8 at Barringer 6-4. Caldwell 8-4 at Newark Tech 10-2. Belleville 5-5 at Clifford Scott 7-4. Newark Academy 10-1 at West Orange 11-2 Central 8-5 at Orange 9-2.'

1/27/01 EDavi11812:  'Loughlin Lions take a bite out of Prep Terriers. 1/27/01 Kevin Reilly: 'Rob Gogerty scored his 1000th point against Montclair-Immaculate HS Friday night. Gogerty is a McDonald's Game nominee and a preseason pick as one of The Newark Star Ledger's five most underrated players in the state. The 6-1 senior guard was also a first team All-County selection as a quarterback for his school's state champion football team. He is an honor roll student and works as a summer coach at St.Catherine of Siena's basketball camp.'

1/27/01  NJO:  St. Pat's faces test tonight.

1/27/00 FastBreak Recruiting:  DeMatha Escapes St Raymonds 51-49.

1/26/00 Rich Gallagher:  'Kennedy (Somers) continued its winning ways with an easy victory at Beacon this evening. Beacon is a scrappy team with a few good players (they somehow managed to hold Peekskill's Rashard Leonard to 7 points in a game earlier in the week), but they couldn't cope with Kennedy's up-tempo offense. The game featured a unique 7-point possession by Kennedy in the third quarter. Beacon had just converted two turnovers into hoops and had cut Kennedy's lead to 16 points, but then Beacon was whistled for goaltending. Beacon disputed the call and was hit with a technical Kennedy's Donnie McGrath swished both free throws and Kennedy was awarded possession on the side. McGrath then canned a three-pointer, and in less than ten seconds Kennedy's lead had jumped from 16 to 23! The other crowd-pleaser was a two-handed, rim-rattlingdunk by Kennedy's Bob Serafin.

The bad news for Kennedy's hopes to repeat as Section One Class B champions is that the team's best outside shooter, James Gray, is out of action for several weeks due to an ankle injury. He wasn't missed against Beacon, but it's unclear if he will be able to play when and if Kennedy has a much-anticipated rematch against Peekskill at the County Center next month.'

1/26/00  Hoopsfan58:  'This Sunday, January 28th an St.Dominic H.S the Bayhawks will host Rice H.S at 3.30 pm, the game was rescheduled from earlier in the year.'

NYS Class D lists Hamilton (13-1, 1), Greenport (9-1,2) and Tuckahoe (12-2, 11).

1/26/00  Nathan Blue:  'I never wanted to say anything but if everyone thinks that St. Benedict is so good how did they lose to Blair Academy? The reason is believe it or not. Blair is a top 10 tri state team. Charlie Vilanueva is scoring about 17pts with a average of 8 rebs and 3 blks. While 6'7 Soph Loul Deng is handling the rock, posting up, and blocking shots. Loul is a good player who with continued development could be a McDonald's All American in a few years. The team has a overall record of 14-1 losing a one point game to Redemption. They beat Worchester Mass, one of the top teams in the east coast.

They also beat Lawrenceville in overtime by 3 pts this past week. Next week they play St. Patricks at St. Pat's. And they play St. Thomas Moore. The team also features Mid D1 prospect Mike Goia 6'3 Sr, and Roberto Felipe a transfer from NYC. If Blair beats St. Pat's which could happen shouldn't they be ranked?'  Web note:  Had to post email from Real Scout which begins, 'I never wanted to say anything but ...'

1/26/01 NJ Hoops:  Seton Hall Prep beat Columbia 62 - 43.

1/26/01  Frank:  'Seton Hall Prep rallied from a second quarter deficit to defeat 13th ranked Columbia 62-43. I was very surprised how much the Pirates had improved from when I saw them over the summer. In particular 6-2 Junior Anthony Drejaj has really stepped up his game and seemed to be all over the court. The Hall is a still a year away and for stretches played Drejaj along with four sophomores led by Jamar Nutter. But for this year, I may have underestimaed the Pirates by picking them to finish 21-6. Clifford Scott coach Greg Tynes and Jay Gomes were at the game.'

1/25/01  Coach Bill McNally: 'This Friday night Poly Prep (currently 5-0 in the Ivy Prep League) takes on second place Horace Mann at Poly Prep's "Oasis Night" . There should be close to 800 people at the game. Oasis Night is a charity event and all proceeds from the 5.00 admission this year will go to "Doctors without Boarders'.  In the past thousands of dollars have been raised for cancer research and other worthy causes. The Poly / Horace Mann rivalry is a strong one and it seems that when these teams meet there is always an exciting game. It would be great to see some of you basketball enthusiasts who frequent this great web site tomorrow night; it should be a lot of fun, both teams are enjoying fine seasons so far. The game will be taped for local television. Poly is located at 92nd Street and 7th Avenue and the girls game is at 6:00 the boys tip at 8:00.'

1/24/01  BabeJay10: 'Christ The King Varsity and Freshmen teams were both winners yesterday against Xaverian. CTK JV lost by 7. As of now all of the CTK teams are in 2nd place in the Brooklyn/Queens division. Freshman Terrance Portis looked good as usual making some big moves but the player of that game was CTK center Brian Beckford who finished with 18. It was all # 21 for Xaverian as Carlton went to work against CTK JV.  He finished with like 16 as they picked up the win. On the varsity level Japhet McNeil returned after not playing last Friday.  He made very good passes and got his team an early lead going into the half. Cris Taft showed the he is going to be a force later on down the road, as he showed us his beautiful post moves, but that just wasn't enough to keep the Royals away from victory.'

1/24/01  NJO:  Dajuan Wagner sets Camden scoring record.

1/24/01 Pdiddy:  'Archbishop Molloy defeated Bishop Loughlin today 60-57. Loughlin had no answer for Wendell Gibson who finished with 20 points. John Sickric and Thomas Harrison added 11 points each. Curtis Sumpter and Teddy Munford had 17 and 16 points respectively for Loughlin. Loughlin was down by as much as 11 in the 4th quarter. A late rally capped by a three pointer by Travis Adams cut it to a 3 point lead with less then 20 seconds left. With the score 59-56 a Molloy turnover lead to a foul on another three point attempt by Adams. He missed the first, made the second, intentionally missed the third free throw. Wendell Gibson rebounded the miss and was fouled immediately. He missed the first free throw, but he made the second to seal the 60-57 victory. Molloy improved to 5-0 in division play while Loughlin fell to 2-4.'

1/24/01 EDavi:  'Loughlin lost to Molloy 57-60. # 42 Wendel Gibson had 20 points, # 24 John Harrison with 11 points, and John Sikiric with 12 points for the Stanners. # 34 Curtis Sumpter had 17 points,# 41 Ted Munford with 16 points, # 31 Rondell Watts, and # 22 Timeke Mitchell had 8 a piece for the Lions. # 45 Travis Adams for Bishop Loughlin, set his game today and hit a big 3 pointer to give the Lions the lead with 32.4 seconds left in the 4th quarter. He had a chance to pull off again but was fouled. Adams missed the first, made the second and missed the 3rd. That would have put the game away for Loughlin. The Lions faced the Terriers this Thursday January 25th at Loughlin.'

1/17/01  Glenn Bynes:  'NJ Wildcat players are making an impact on the high school level.   Most of the players are having good seasons so far. Among them:  Ryan Carey and Dan Dugan who have lead Summit HS to a 8-2 record so far. Sean Lynch has had a productive start with several high scoring games for Delaware Valley HS. Dave Pearson has had a solid season so far for Matawan HS. Paul Gross has been solid for South Plainfield HS. Doug Beck has performed well in a quality victory over Delaware Valley earlier in the season. Aaron Carter and Shaheed Williams has had impressive starts for a young North Brunswick HS team which upset highly regarded Carteret earlier in the season. Rutgers currently has on their unofficial roster as walks-ons. I won't mention the name until it is official. St. Pats will have the addition of Everett Morgan this week. Eric Bynes will be added to the New Brunswick HS squad once he is eligible after his transfer from St. Peter's in New Brunswick.'

1/17/01  NJO  Boys Basketball Top 20.

1/17/01  South Jersey News:  Dajuan Wagner scores 100. And Was it really necessary for Wagner to score 100?

1/17/01 Hoop Scoop  'I will never forget the one time I saw a game at Camden (H.S.) NJ. It was back when Kevin Walls was a senior the mid-80s and they simply murdered an all-white suburban team from South Jersey. I also remember asking then head coach Clarence Turner after the game if he always run up the score like he'd done that afternoon. "I see no reason to tailor my team to the level of the competition," said Turner. He also added that he always took Walls, who on that day scored 54 points, out when his team scored 100 points. Well, it looks like that's also the current philosophy at Camden. When 6'2 Dajuan Wagner, who is well on his way towards breaking the all-time scoring record in the state of New Jersey, gets 100 points, they take him out and call it day.'

1/16/01 Nathan Blue:  'Rice lost to All Hallows. 68-44. Ricky Soliver had over 20pts and Bobby Santiago had 18pts.'

1/16/01 HOOPSLOVE35:  'All Hallows 68, Rice 44.  This was a blowout from the start. The score was 40-20 at the half and it was downhill for Rice. Bobby Santiago led with 20 pts and Ricky Soliver chipped in with 15 but the real story is how All Hallows dominated the boards over 7.2 Shagari Alleyne and 6.9 Shakem Mitchell.   Raul Netera, Kenneth McMillan and Anwan Lewis boxed out Rice's big men to control the boards.'

1/16/01 Future133:  'The University of Albany has recently received a verbal commitment from 5'5" Earvin Opong, better known as "I'll be Right Back". For those who don't know Earv was featured on thge TNT special On Hallowed Ground. Earv won the MVP of the famed EBC and is a household name among NYC basketball players. Earv is currently playing Junior College at Sullivan Community College, which is currently ranked in the top 10 for D3 Juco's.'

1/16/01 Droppoff:  'All-Star game 8th Grade -- the Division One All-Star game at Island Garden was an interesting game. On the red side were Mike Crisci, Mike Abbondandolo and Marcus Diggs. On the blue side were Trevone Hughes and Ray Arnold. Red jumped out to a quick lead behind the scoring of Mike Crisci but blue kept it close with Ray Arnold constantly driving inside. There was no doubt who the best two players on the court were. In the end red won 52-47. Unofficially Ray Arnold finished with 20 and Mike Crisci with 27.'

1/16/01 Private Schools:  'Trevor Day went into Columbia Prep 27 point favorites, and in the early stages of the game, TDS showed the fans why. Trevor Day, being led by the BIG 3 ( Dodson, Draughon, Berkin) jumped out to an early 22-2 lead. A few questionable calls later in the period brought Columbia right back into the game, as the lead dwindled to 22-13.. In the second period, Trevor Day lost a little fire-power with Draughon being forced to watch from the side lines with 4 fouls. At the end of the half, Trevor lead only by 10, at 33-23. In the third, Columbia Prep took a 3 point lead. Trevor was forced to turn to their guards, and theydidn't let Trevor down. Although only juniors, Draughon and Dodson showed senior like leadership throughout the third quarter and helped Trevor go ahead once again by 12. In the fourth, Columbia began to come back once again, but Trevor didn't let it happen. With Berkin having an off night, the weight of the team would be placed on Dodson and Draughon, and they responded. The Duo combined for 17 fourth quater points, and were responsible for most of Trevor's points in the period. Trevor Day would survive a scare, and walk out of Columbia Prep with a victory. Billy Dodson scored 21 points and added 6 rebounds. Kevin Draughon cashed in 20 points and dished out 12 assists for Trevor.'

1/5/01 BERASM:  'FDA defeated Man. Center , 67-54, despite struggling early in the first quarter where they were down 17-5. They were led by Sam Edwards, 19pts., 17 reb. and 7 blks including a crucial one in the 4th quarter against Man.Center's Jason Stamper which led to a 8-0 run to put FDA up 58-45. Also, Steve Souma scored 16pts most of which came in the second half.'

1/5/01 bonfire12:  'Frederick Douglass Academy (11-1) is finally growing up. After 3 impressive road wins over the Christmas Holidays and their starting PG, Alonzo Brown, being named MVP of the "Celriver Holiday Tournament"  (prior mvps have been Tracy McGrady (Orlando Magic) and Reggie Love (Duke) just to name a few) Douglass revenged its only loss of the season in bouncing Manhattan Center 67-54. The victory was impressive because they lost Brown in the first quarter with a fracture to his left hand. However, the team did not fold, but showed its maturiy. .Trailing by 13, Sam Edwards stepped up big time and almost had a triple double for the second time this season ( Wadleigh game). He scored 19pts, grabbed 17rebs and blocked 7 shots, Steve Souma added 16 pts, Tahan Engram 15pts, 5 ast and Otwan Lowery 8 pts and 6 steals. Douglass coach, Pat Mangan, and his assistants, Gaylord Brown and Mario Berasm deserve a lot of credit for their tireless effort and guidance in helping to show young men how they can be successful not only in the class room but on the court also.'

1/5/01  NBlatch:  'Tryouts -- The Warriors Basketball program has quickly established itself as one of the strongest AAU/youth basketball organizations in New York. Tryouts will be held at IS 90 in Manhattan in the 3rd Floor Warriors gym located at 21 Jumel Place - 168 Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Transportation: M2, 101, A, C, 1 or 9 to 168 Street. 1/4/01 HoopUSA - Consensus Top Teams - 2000-2001 - Week of Jan 1, 2000.

1/4/01 BOOKSNBALL:  'I hope fans of high school hoops will make the effort to get to St. John's University on Saturday January 6, 2001 for the first PSAL "High School Classic". The Games start at 11 a.m., but the major attraction is for fans to be present at one of the annual classic match ups of city hoops. William E. Grady Tech vs. Abraham Lincoln High School. The league match-ups between these perennial PSAL powers are always SRO affairs when played at the schools (located 2 blocks apart in Brooklyn) and the fans from Coney Island always pump up the volume for this one. This one has a special passion as it's for bragging rights in the neighborhood and always offers a outstanding display of hgh school hoops. With this years Grady team ranked #1 in N.Y. State ably coached by Jack Ringel and Lincoln's ( coming back from a very respectful showing at the "Slam Dunk at the Beach" in Del. 2 & 1 record) 4 year starter John Quintanna and freshmen phenom Sebastian Telfair forming one of the city's top backcourts looking to tie up their divison race (Grady undefeated in Div. & Lincoln has one loss) .  This game will feature non stop action from baseline to baseline.

If you love high school hoops and want to support the renewed efforts of the "new" PSAL to showcase all of their players make the effort to be there and show your support. You'll be glad you made the trip!'

1/4/01  Jim Burke:  'The Jersey Hot Shots Girls and Boys AAU Club, Scotch Plains, NJ, will be conducting tryouts and open gyms in the near future for the following teams:  Girls - 13U (1987 birthdate) and 14U (1988 birthdate),  Boys - 10U (4th grade) and 11U (5th grade).   If you have any players who are interested in trying out for one of these teams, please let me know. The girls website can be accessed at www.jerseyhotshots.com. Tryout/open gym dates for the girls are on the website.'

1/4/01 Coach Kevin Pigott:  'Here are the long-awaited Burt Beagle NYC rankings for this week.  NYC -- 1) Grady,  2) St. Raymond's,  3) Bishop Loughlin,  4) All Hallows,  5) Rice,  6) Boys & Girls,  7) Robeson,  8) Holy Cross,  9) Molloy,  10) Xaverian,  11) Roosevelt,  12) Christ the King,  13) Manhattan Center,  14) Cardoza,  15)Lincoln.

Catholic and Private NYC  -- 1) St.Raymond's,  2) Loughlin,  3) All Hallows,  4) Rice,  5) Holy Cross,  6) Molloy,  7) Xaverian,  8) Christ the King,  9) St. Francis Prep,  10) Mount St. Michael,

Public NYC -- 1) Grady,  2) Boys and Girls,  3) Robeson,  4) Roosevelt,  5) Manhattan Center,  6) Cardoza,  7) Lincoln,  8) Frederick Douglass,  9) Kennedy,  10)New Utrecht.

Some observations -  Where does St. Raymond's drop to with their recent defeats? Why is All Hallows higher than Holy Cross? Holy Cross is undefeated and the Gaels are one of their victims. Imagine - Roosevelt was a "B" team last year. Does Poly Prep move into the rankings with their recent victories? Is there a team that is more fun to watch in NYC this year than Grady? Burt is killing me - he never ranks Fordham Prep :)'
