2/28/01 HoopUSA - Consensus Top Teams - 2000-2001 - Week of February 25, 2001.

2/28/01 Rollelib: 'St Dominic'x JV team was the champ on Long Island this year. They beat Chaminade in the championship game on Feb 18. This is a great team that went 12-0 in league play 22-1 overall, beating St. Raymonds, Christ the King , Molloy and LaSalle to name a few non league games. Their only lost was to Bishop Loughlin and who knows how a rematch would turn out. There are some bright stars on this teams and we look forward to seeing what happens next year.'

2/27/01 Cspotd:  'Archbishop Molloy's Junior Varsity rallied back from an 11 point deficit in the third quarter to defeat Bishop Loughlin. Molloy will play All Hallows Friday night for the city championship. Congratulations to Coach Shannon, he has now reached the city finals in all three years he has been a J.V. coach.'

2/27/01 Coach Kevin Pigott:  'Tonight both Xaverian and Holy Cross won. I believe they will play Friday for the Brooklyn-Queens championship.  This makes the CHSAA City playoff seeding interesting.  Correct me if I am wrong, but now McClancy, the seventh seed in Bronx - Manhattan, will have to play Brooklyn - Queens three seed Christ the King. (The last team in Brookyn - Queens, ie., McClancy, becomes the last seed for Bronx- Manhattan.) Molloy, a four seed will play five seed LaSalle. That makes Loughlin a five seed and St. Francis Prep a six seed from Brooklyn - Queens. Loughlin plays Bronx - Manhattan four and Prep plays the third seed. Wednesday's Bronx - Manhattan semifinals take on a different spin now. Rice plays Raymond's at 5 PM followed by All Hallows and St. Peter's.'

2/26/01  National Prep Basketball Poll - Week 14.

2/26/01  Pdiddy9682:  'JV Final 4 -- All Hallows Vs Christ the King. Loughlin Vs Molloy. The first game showcases argueably the best freshman and sophomore players on the JV level with freshman Ronald Ramon for All Hallows and sophomore Justin Marshall of CK. The second game features Loughlin and Molloy who split there season series. Both games will be played at St. Raymond tomorrow.'

2/26/01 James Quinn:  'Local McDonald's Snub -- How about Rashad Bell of St. Francis Prep not making the final 100? The McDonald's game is all about selecting names, not players. Wendall Gibson, Chris McRae and Julius Hodge are no doubt deserving of the honor but you basically could have written these kids in before the season because of their respective programs and coaches, who do a tremendous job. These three also had great junior years and summers and signed Division I letters of intent prior to the season. Just because Rashad did not have the name should not mean that he doesn't get considered because he had just as good, if not, a better season that all three.'

2/25/01 John P. Miciotta:  'Brooklyn-Queens seeding round -- Game one saw second-seeded Xaverian hold off seventh seeded McClancy 51-42. The Crusaders used a slow tempo and the hot shooting of Kevin Bishop to keep it close early but hot shooting by the Clippers' Lou Karis and a fine defensive and rebounding effort off the bench by Shamar Green allowed the Xaverian to pull away late. They face Molloy who cruised to a 16 point win over St. Francis Prep. John Sikric set the tone early with fine outside shooting and a fine all around effort by junior swingman Jamal Wagner, who battled Rashad Bell on the boards and created turnovers with terrific perimeter defense. The Clippers and Stanners face off in Tuesday's first semi-final at 4:15 at St. Francis College. The second semi-final has number one seed Christ the King facing the winner of the 4-5 game Holy Cross and Loughlin. Ted Gustus' Lions were leading at the half 36-31 thanks to a fast start by their two mainstays Ted Munford and Curtis Sumpter.'

2/25/01 EDavi11812:  'Holy Cross defeats Loughlin 77-74 to play Christ the King. Cross will play CK Tuesday at St. Francis College. Loughlin lead throughout most of the game, but with a lot of fouls they gave the game away. Ted Munford led the Lions with 21 points and 6 assists. Timeke Mitchell with 20 points and 12 rebounds and Curtis Sumpter with 16 points and 10 boards for the Lions. #12 Chris Fileti led Cross with 20 points. #44 Joe Marino with 19 points, #21 Mike Howell with 14 points and #31 Adam Frederil with 11 points for Cross. It was the best game of the day. Good ball movements from each team. The Lions needed to put a more efficient defender on Fileti. he was hitting 3 pointers all game. He got his 4th 3-pointer to give Cross the lead.'

2/25/00 Brooklyn Scout:  'It will be Riverside vs. Brooklyn USA in the IS 8 Junior Finals. Brooklyn USA led the Ajax Gauchos from the opening minutes but didn't put the game away until a 13-4 run to start the fourth quarter propelled Brooklyn USA to a 55-37 victory and a berth in the Junior division championship game. Angel Alaimo, Kenneth Hayes, Freddie Jenkins and Timothy Tillery all had 9 points in the balanced Brooklyn USA scoring. Shahee Martin had a game-high 15 for Ajax while Devon Brown added 8 points.

Riverside coasted to leads of 14-2 after one and 26-3 at the half en route to a 51-18 romp over the Skyriders to advance to the Junior title contest. Courtney Johnson and Billy Gilbert each tallied 11 points for the Church while Aaron Harvey topped the Skyriders with 9.'

2/24/00 Matt Grasso:  'This past Friday night, Kennedy beat Sleepy Hollow 84-60 to advance to the Westchester County Center for the 3rd year in a row. They were paced by Bobby Serafin who led the way with a game high 32 points including two rim rockers. Bobby was also very effective on the defensive end holding Sleepy Hollow's Greg Cole to a lackluster 22 points for Sleepy Hollow. This game also marked the return of injured wing man James Gray. He looked back to his old form knocking down his first shot, a three pointer from the corner, soon after his entrance into the game sparking a thunderous applause from the near sell out crowd at Kennedy High School. Gray finished with 8 points for the Gaels. Also in the scorebook for Kennedy, Brian O'Donnell put up 17 and Donnie McGrath chipped in 15 points and 10 dimes for Kennedy Catholic. The Kennedy Gaels continue the defense of their sectional championship from last year Thursday night at 6:15 pm against the runner up from last year, Nyack. 2/24/00 Rich G:  'In Section 1, Class B, Kennedy (Somers) whipped Sleepy Hollow, 84-60 behind Bobby Serafin's 32 points. Kennedy came out running and blew through Sleepy Hollow's man-to-man defense. Sleepy Hollow made a run late in the first quarter and closed to within four points, but Kennedy pulled away in the second period and never looked back. Serafin was a monster around the basket, showing a deft touch in close and also slamming through two thunderous dunks. But the big news for Kennedy is that their best 3-point shooter, James Gray, is back in action after an extended layoff due to an ankle injury. He looked a bit rusty but gained confidence as the game wore on -- he nailed two treys and another long jumper just inside the line. The Gaels are slated to meet the winner of the Nyack-Nanuet game in the semis on Thursday night at the County Center. Kennedy beat Nyack by 11 in their season opener in December.'

2/23/01 Coach Kevin Pigott:  'Two great games tonight. Xavier defeated St. John's Prep in a close game 56-43 to give them the frosh championship. Congrats to Coach Greg Dolan. The JV championship was a "barn-burner." St. Edmund's defeated St. Josephs By-the-Sea 52-51. Matt Irwin (yes, another Irwin playing the point for Edmund's) had 25 points. Power forward Andy Louison added ten points. John Culotta had 20 for the Vikings. Congrats to Coach Chris Wright. I was impressed with the level of play for all four teams.'

2/19/01  Carl B. Clark:  'Congratulations to Coach Warren Fuller of The Wyandanch Runnin'Lady Warrior Girls Basketball team for recently recording his 400 th victory, the First Female Coach ever on Long Island. Warren's record is  now (402-121). The Warrriors are 18-0 this season.'

2/19/01  Frank:  'Seton Hall Prep's Jamar Nutter has been released from the hospital after suffering a concusion in the team's semi-final ECT win over Weequahic. Nutter was grabbed around the neck from behind on a dunk attempt and hit his head on the backboard. Referee Gil Bragg immediately called a flagrant foul. Many observers thought the Weequahic player should have been ejected from the game as well. Nutter later fainted in the parking lot. Jamar is day to day and is not expected to see action tomorrow vs. Morris Knolls or Thursday at West Morris. It is too early to look ahead to Saturday's ECT final at 2:45 with 22-1 Shabazz.'

2/19/01  bonfire12@webtv.net:  'Rice vs FDA -- I feel like judge Mills Lane when I say "Lets Get It On". Just as the Yankees vs Mets or Knick vs Nets , this game would have some of the same excitement. It would create a good and friendly rivalry between these two Harlem schools. Perhaps Rice is afraid to play FDA. After watching quite a few of FDA's games this season, I think that they would certainly give Rice one heck of a game. Hopefully, Mo Hicks will see the light and accept the challenge...'

2/18/01 Rich G:  'The decision by New York's Section One to seed teams solely on the basis of season records has resulted in an unfortunate situation in Class A. Mount Vernon and Poughkeepsie, who faced off in the Class A finals last year and were expected to make it to the County Center this year, will instead play each other in the quarterfinals on 2/23. Burt Beagle has Mount Vernon ranked #3 in Section One's Class A (behind White Plains and Poughkeepsie), but the Knights were seeded sixth in the tournament because they had six losses during the regular season. Section One apparently paid no attention to strength of schedule when seeding teams, so in effect Mount Vernon has been punished for playing a tough non-conference schedule. And Poughkeepsie is getting the short end of the stick, as well -- instead of playing a real #6 seed in the quarterfinals, the Pioneers (the only team to beat White Plains this year) have to get past the defending champions just to make it to the County Center.

Anyway, here are the matchups for the quarterfinals on 2/23 in Class A and Class B: Class A: Mahopac at White Plains; Gorton at Ramapo; Mount Vernon at Poughkeepsie; New Rochelle at Spring Valley.     Class B: Fox Lane at Horace Greeley; Albertus Magnus at Peekskill; Nanuet at Nyack; Sleepy Hollow at JFK (Somers).

Speaking of Poughkeepsie, a milestone was reached on Friday when the girls basketball team at Our Lady of Lourdes won their 20th game of the season, marking the 16th consecutive year in which the Warriors have won at least 20 games. They appear be a cinch to win the Section One Class B title.'

2/18/01 Steve:  'The Long Island Roadrunners 15Us will live up to their name this spring and summer as they will be truly running the roads across the country. Here are just a few of the prestigious tournaments they already have scheduled: MARCH - the Tim Thomas Tournament in NJ; APRIL - the Wayne Simone Tournament in Conn.; MAY - the Spiece Tournament in Indiana, the Northeast Hoops Tournament in Albany, the Sharpshooter Tournament in NJ and the Gym Rat Tournament at SUNY Albany; JUNE - the Charlie Weber at Penn State and the Northeast Hoops Tournament in upstate NY; JULY - the team will be attending the Pitt III session at Five Star Camp in Pittsburg, and a national tournament out west. As usual, wish us luck!'

2/17/01 auto80417:  'Molloy  JV beat St. Frances Prep to clinch the division title. The Stanners only 2 division losses were to Christ The King and Bishop Loughlin. King and Loughlin play for 2nd seed on Tuesday at Holy Cross.'

2/17/01 Bayshore with semifinal results on the ECT, 2001 page.

2/17/01 CLJSchneider:  'Without a doubt, the best school in the state this year is St. Mary's. Four of their five starters received McDonald's All America nominee status. They play uptempo, team ball- very unselfish players. They have size, speed, and all 5 starters can shoot the rock with the best of them. They also have one of the best coaches in the state- Tim Cluess. Cluess will be on the sideline of a Division I school within the next 5-7 years. They also have some serious motivation- Coach Cluess' 2 year old son was recently diagnosed with leukemia and the players have dedicated the season to little TJ Cluess. "A" class, "B" class..it doesn't matter- this team is on a mission. They beat St. Doms by 25, Boys & Girls by 15, Lincoln by 30 , and went 4-0 in the Vegas Shootout. If you haven't noticed this team yet, you will. Rock on Gaels...'  Web note:  NY State Sportswriters Association Class A rankings through 2/11 list Schenectady,  Robeson, St.Mary,  Niagra Falls and All Hallows as the state's top five teams.

2/17/01 BERASM:  'I would like to see game between Rice and Frederick Douglass Academy take place sometime in the near future to determine who is the better team in Harlem. FDA has tried to schedule them but they do not respond. Would u like to see this happen?'

2/17/00 Rich:  'Senior Day Celebration at St. Raymond's -- Seniors Chris McRae and Julius Hodge led St. Raymond's to a Senior Day victory over Rice HS 77-58. St. Ray's led 38-25 late in the second quarter before Rice made an impressive 20-4 run to take a 45-42 lead in the third quarter. However, 14 second half points by McRae and 9 fourth quarter points by Hodge guaranteed a Ravens' win.  Based on the talent at St. Ray's and All Hallows, the CHSAA A Champion will likely be a Bronx/Manhattan team for the sixth consecutive year.  Boxscore:  St. Ray's Chris McRae 23, Julius Hodge 19, Alan Ray 13, Louie McCroskey 8, Daon Merritt 6, Tariq Atkins 4, Anthony Epps 2 and Andrew Jarvis 2.   Rice  Christian Brown 15, Jason Wingate 12, Russell Robinson 10, Keydren Clark 9, Sagari Alleyne 4, Arturo DuBois 4, and Kenny Eusey 3.

St. Ray's B defeated Holy Cross B for the city championship. Rice JV defeated St. Ray's JV by six, 72-66.'

2/17/00 Coach Kevin Pigott:  'The CHSAA "C" Division ended this way; 1) Regis (14-0), 2) Cathedral (11-3), 3) Monsignor Scanlan (10-4), 4) Blessed Sacrament (7-7), 5) St. Agnes (7-7,) 6) Salesian (5-9), 7) Sacred Heart (2-12), and 8) St. Helena's (0-14).  Regis gets a bye in the first round and St Joseph's By-the-Sea represents Staten Island. Playoffs start February 25 at Sacred Heart in Yonkers. The first game starts at noon and is St. Joseph's By-the-Sea against Blesed Sacrament. At 1:45, Cathedral plays Salsian. Finally at 3:15, Scanlan plays St. Agnes. Semifianals are at Mount St. Michael on March 3 and the finals are at Iona College on March 9.  The "C" playoffs tend to have some interesting matchups and I believe that you will seen some very well-played games in these playoffs.'

2/15/01 Bonfire:  'I would like to see the players globe hopping to the library or to study hall. Today, (Valentines Day) I watched a high school coach, at 7pm, after practice for his varsity team, sit down with a young man (6th grade) and tutor him and this kid doesn,t even play basketball. He said he knew his wife was gonna be upset, but if a kid wanted to learn then he is there for them. We need more of this and less AAU coaches steering and influencing kids as to where to go to school and what coach to play for.'

2/15/01 RichG:   'Here are the Class A and Class B seedings for the New York Section One playoffs, as published in The Poughkeepsie Journal on 2/14/01:  Class A -- 1. White Plains, 2. Spring Valley, 3. Poughkeepsie, 4. Ramapo, 5. Arlington, 6. Mount Vernon, 7. New Rochelle, 8. Mahopac, 9. Scarsdale, 10. Walter Panas, 11. Mamaroneck,  12. Croton, 13. Yorktown, 14. Suffern, 15. Lincoln, 16. Carmel, 17. Roy C. Ketcham, 18. John Jay (East Fishkill), 19. Ossining, 20. Franklin D. Roosevelt. The seedings appear to have been determined solely on the basis of team records, which explains the #6 seed for Mount Vernon.

Class B -- 1. Horace Greeley,  2. JFK (Somers),  3. Nyack,  4. Peekskill,  5. Albertus Magnus,  6. Nanuet,  7. Sleepy Hollow,  8. Fox Lane,  9. Pelham,  10. Lakeland,  11. Ardsley,  12. Pearl River,  13. Hen Hud,  14. Beacon,  15. Our Lady of Lourdes,  16. John Jay (Cross River),  17. Port Chester,  18. Tappan Zee,  19. Byram Hills,  20. Rye,  21. Harrison,  22. Eastchester,  23. Brewster.  The low seeds will play preliminary games on February 15 and the high seeds go into action on Friday, February 16. The quarterfinals are scheduled for February 23 at the home courts of the higher seeds. The semi-finals and finals will be held at the County Center in White Plains beginning on March 1. Again, it appears that the only criterion for the seedings in Class B was each team's record. There's no other explanation for Nyack (18-2) being seeded higher than Peekskill (17-3), and JFK (Somers) almost certainly would have been seeded #1 had they not played and lost to Rice early in the season. The good news is that Peekskill and JFK are in opposite brackets, which sets up the possibility of a third meeting between the two teams, who played two overtime games during the regular season.'

2/14/01 Coach Pigott:  'CHSAA "B" Standings -- The North plays 15 league games and the South plays 14 league games. Everyone plays the teams in their division twice and plays the teams in the other division once. There are six teams in the North and five in the South. As of today, February 14, here are the standings. In the North Division, Iona Prep, Fordham Prep, and Cardinal Hayes are tied for first with 9-5 records. Iona plays its final game at Archbishop Stepinac Friday night. Hayes travels to Fordham Friday afternoon to play both teams' last game. Cardinal Spellman is 7-6. They host Bishop Ford tomorrow and close at home against Mount St. Michael on Saturday. Mount is 7-7 with Spellman left. Stepinac (2-12) has Iona left.

St. Edmund's (12-2), Xavier (8-6), and Nazareth (6-8) have finished their seasons. Ford is 5-7 with Spellman and St. John's Prep left. St. John's (1-12) has Ford left. The seedings for the tournament should be out Friday night. Moore Catholic and Monsignor Farrell are in the tournament also.'

They had lost to the Stanners the first time the met. The Lions started the game with a lot of fire. They went on a 11-0 run start in the first quarter. The Stanners were down the whole game. At one point they came back, but Munford stole the ball and passed it to Curtis Sumpter, who dunked on about 3 people. Gustus knew if Wendell Gibson for the Stanners got the ball more often, it would be a hard game for Loughlin. So He doubled him, keeping him away form the ball. John Jammot had 12 points and Tom Harrison finished with 11 points for the Stanners. 2/13/01 LFBALL:  'When will kids like Tim Begley get the respect they deserve? This kid should have been recruited by Rutgers months ago. Why in heavens name does Bannon wait until the last minute? Tim should tell the RU staff, who for the most part are missing in action on and off the court, to take the ship and shove it. He should go to one of the other fine schools now recruiting him. This recruitment effort is common in Big East circles. Once one school recruits a kid, here comes the others. If he did not receive other offers, he would not get one from RU. I would love to see Tim play at Northwestern, Stanford, Florida, etc. Heck, Seton Hall could also use him. I am just happy he is now getting the respect he deserves. If anyone gets a chance to meet the CBA players, you would be very impressed with them. They are great kids on and off the court. Always exhibiting sportsmanship, etc. Now if the coaches could integrate the team, they would really be great! But thats another story.'

2/12/01 JBDingle:  The quest for the Bergen County Championships whittled down to four and it's pretty much the four teams that everybody expected - Teaneck, Bergen Catholic, Don Bosco Prep, and Englewood.

2/12/01 BRO  Bergen Catholic does it with 'D'.   Don Bosco Prep prevails inside.   Englewood strikes early in win.   Teaneck fends off River Dell's run.

2/12/01 The Apple's Best High School Ballaz -- PSAL Predictions.

2/12/01 Poppi6266:  'With the last game of the regular season for Peekskill, they run into Ossining once again. But this time they weren't Simmons's less. Ossining led the game all the way until 2:00 minutes left in regulation, until a hungry Peekskill forced 5 turnovers down the stretch. Peekskill knocked off the Indians 63-61. Rashard Turner led the Red Devils with 20pts and 6'7'' Hilton Armstrong scored 18pts and grabbed 11rebs respectively. Ossining held tuff behind the hot hand of Rushid Simmons who had a game high 34pts. Simmons a scoring machine through the regular season has averaged 27.6pts per. But a solid Peekskill club held Ossining off. The Red Devils end the season 17-3. Peekskill's JV upended Ossining 67-53 to end off their super season with a 18-1 finish. Sophmore Chris Horton had 19pts and 11rebs for the Devils. Horton who has averaged 23.4pts per played solid all year for the Devils. Freshman point guard Devon McCallob scored 20pts and sophmore Eric McDonald contributed 17pts. Horton who will move up to varsity for the sectional tournament, should have an eye kept on him. This kid knows how to put points on the board. So for you teams that run into Peekskill not only have Turner and Armstrong to worry about, but a sesational sophmore in Horton who gives Peekskill that other player needed to make their team complete. Glens Falls watch out for them Devils!'

2/11/01  EM krispy:  'Christ The King defeated New Castle, Pa 56-41 at the Prime Time Shoot out. MVP award was given to Rob Barrett who had 23 points. Peedy Nelson had 21 points and Japhet McNeil had 7 assists.'

2/11/01  New York Post  Dajuan and Only Prevails.

2/11/01 LFBALL: 'By now everyone knows the final score and that Camden defeated St Rays at the Prime Time Shootout in Trenton NJ. Over 10,000 people watched this exciting game as the refs (yes I am saying this for all the refs on the site who say refs do not lose games) TOOK THE GAME from a deserving St. Rays. Julius Hodge, Allan Ray, Chris McCray and Daon Merritt were all outstanding as was the game coaching by Gary D and his staff, I was ashamed of being a resident of New Jersey after this game was over. Camden fouled without calls while St. Rays had every little call made. If Camden and St. Rays played 10 times on neutral courts St. Rays would win 9 times. Julius Hodge and Dajuan Wagner (39 points after shooting 35 times at least) went at it. In fact they had to be separated at the end of the game. As St. Rays left the court, Camden fans threw objects at the St. Rays kids, causing an ugly scene. Gary D. would not let who ever recieved MVP for his team to return to the court. An action I really agree with. I felt sick watching this game being taken away from the St. Rays kids. Of course Gary and his staff will say the refs did not lose the game. Thats the political thing to say. Well I am not political. They received a home job to the 10th degree. With 3 fourths of the artena against them, St. Rays was outstanding. They really deserved this win. In an earlier game Rice defeated RJ Renolds HS from NC, which is in the top 10 nationally. Steve Burtt Jr. was outstanding!! So were the other players. I still feel Rice is missing a lot this year, and I do not mean players. They came out sloppy. Some with warmup pants, others without. Jerseys hanging over shorts, etc. Mo Hicks is an excellent x and o guy. I sure wanted them to look more uniformed like the other teams playing. After all, they were representing NYC.'

2/10/01  PKATTY:  'Long Island Lightning AAU Basketball tryouts for 17 & Under (11th Grade) boys will be held on Monday, February 19th, 2001, at 2:00 P.M. at the Island Garden, 45 Cherry Valley Avenue in West Hempstead, N.Y. 516 292 4956. Over 40 Lightning players are currently playing, or have been recruited to play, college basketball at Divisions I, II & III. Such Division I universities include Maryland, Hofstra, Villanova, Samford, Iona, Quinnipiac, Holy Cross, Columbia, Boston University, William & Mary, New Hampshire, Bucknell and Marist. If questions, contact the Island Garden at the above number, or coach Paul Kalker at 631 979 8808.'

2/10/01 Hoopsfan58:  'While the situation on the Island is now definitely bizarre to say the least....You can definitely rectify it for next season. Simple as this....play by the old league rules and send the playoff winner as an A rep....whoever it may be, they did it until the 1990 season if I can remember and then send the runner up to the B's its as fair as you can get I think......anyway, why not make the best of the situation for this year....at least you know you will have the two best teams playing March 4th at Hofstra....while Mary's has beaten Doms 2x this season....the second battle on Mary's home court was a lot more competitive and I can't help but think that when they meet again it will be a classic....one thing I will guarantee is their will be 5,000 strong at that game.....very rare for Long Island.'

2/10/01  Future133:  'Former Newtown PG, Chris Sandy is having an exceptional year. He is leading his West Ark squad to a 17-1 start and they are currently ranked #14 nationally. Chris is currently averaging 17pts, and 9asst per game. He is being recurited by schools such as South Florida. This kid deserves to be recruited by more schools. Chris would be a fine point guard at any MAJOR D1 college. He is a tough kid, who is great on defense, can score and can run an offense extremely well. More D1 schools should start taking an interest in Chris.'

2/10/01 NJ Hoops:  St. Patrick's dropped a tough 43 - 41 contest to Dominguez of California in the feature contest of the night at the Prime Time Shootout.

2/10/01 Newsday:  St. Mary's Tops St. Dom.

2/10/01 Rich:  St. Mary's scored a home victory over St. Dominic's, 63-56 tonight before an SRO crowd. St. Mary's maintained the lead throughout the game with a 4 point lead at halftime and a 9 point lead at the end of 3. These teams will meet again on March 4 at Hofstra University. St. Peter's head coach Bob Leckie, Stonehill assistant coach Joe Loughran and Queens College assistant coach Kirk Liddlelow were in attendance.  Boxscore -- St. Mary's - Dwayne Byfield 19, Matt Preston 15, Mamadou Diakate 12, Ken Grant 11, Jared Weir 3, Keith Tilley 2, and Brian Preston 1.  St. Dominic's - Greg Bosl 15, Mike Grinnon 14, Tim Doyle 14, Alex Patsos 9, and Jim Bebry 4.'

2/10/01 djp:  'Well folks, I believe we have just witnessed the creation of a new basketball league on Long Island - let's call it the XNSCHSAA! Looks like the other two teams, St. Mary's and St. Dominic's have just played a whole regular season for nothing. There is no point to playing anymore league games. And what is the point in playing a 'championship' game on March 4th after beating St. Dom's 2X already? The playoff seeding should be head to head, with a championship game only for a tiebreaker. The good 'ole boys over at Chaminade and Kellenberg may think they have done it again. Except I think their desperate plan to send a 'B' team (yea right) will backfire with Holy Trinity winning that tournament and advancing to the 'B' tournament under this week's rules. After all, next week who knows how the tiny minded cretans who run this league will feel. They may just keep changing the rules as many times as they like. Can this get any more bizarre?'

2/10/01 HOOPSLOVE35:  'All Hallows had a 18pt lead before Steve Burtt and Kenny Eusey cut the lead to ten.  But that all Rice could do as Marvin McCullough had 19 pts, Ricky Soliver had 15, Kenneth McMillan 11pts and 10 rebounds to give All Hallows the victory.'.

2/9/01 Hoopsfan58: 'Talk about making a bad situation a whole lot worse.....St. Mary's and St.Dominic who were recently switched to class A halfway through their seasons, not necessarily a bad thing considering they have beaten many of the A teams they have played, the questionable thing was the timing. Now their own league has changed the playoff system, Mary's and Doms will play each other in the championship on March 4th. ...technically they could cancel all their remaining games ...after all why risk injury right? The rest of the league will play the tourney without them ....Not a lot of fun for anyone, the semifinals at Hofstra is always such a fun night ....the chance of upsets ....big crowd ....way to go guys tear the league apart why don't you! This is not NYC .....these teams will not always compete with the big boys all the time .....the only fair way would be do it by enrollment ....and from the start of the season ...Also talk about completely taking the air out of what could have been a classic tonight when Doms visited Marys ....once again ....way to go guys!'

2/5/01 Nathan Blue:  'I went to watch the ProStyles (Not UDC) tournament at Bronx Regional HS. The first game I caught. Dominic Lewis' squad beat the Mustangs by about 15pts. The second game Riverside Church (Juniors) beat The Brooklyn Rams, who just weren't ready to go to church on this Sunday.

The third game was La Paco (I'm guessing) vs Kips Bay. Kips Bay was coached by Artie Green. His two star players played great. Sr. Leon Fuller 6-8 PF formerly of All Hallows and Jr. Curtis Stinson 6-2 PG Bronx Regional HS.  Both of these kids have grown under coach Green and even though they aren't currently playing High School Basketball are in my mind a lock to be major college impact players one day.

I talked to Stinson and he seemed to have his head on straight. He just caught a little bad luck with the whole situation at Our Savior of Lutheran. I didn't wait to see Stinson play the whole game. At the half he had about 11pts 6 assists and 5 rebs 2 steals. But my outlook on the ProStyles tournament is that it's live and it looks to be one of many events this upcoming group of guys will run.'

2/3/01 The Apple's Best High School Ballaz -- Lincoln vs. St. Raymond.

2/3/01 Miguel Rodriguez:  'St.Raymonds led by Julius Hodge (35pts 16rebs) defeated a pesky Lincoln team by 11 (77-66). St.Rays was up by as many as 14 in the first half before #10 John Quintana (29 pts on 10-29 shooting) kept the Railsplitters in the game and they eventually went into the half up 5 points. In the second half Sebastain Telfair got over his first half jitters and went to the hole at will with very impressive finishes which kept Lincoln in the game. But Coach DeCesare with Chris McRae in foul trouble for most of the game went into a triangle and 2 and he put Julius Hodge on Quintana which virtually eliminated his scoring in the second half due to a 5 or 6 inch height advantage. He might have had 4 points in the second half if that. Louie McClosky played an excellent game for the Ravens on the boards. Allan Ray is coming into his own as the next good one to go major D1. Well you have to if you wear the (#14 Terrence Rencher-Texas class of 91').  Sebastain Telfair is the real deal. Lincoln is my bet on winning the PSAL but their lack of size will be a problem. They have great guard play and are very stingy on defense. The Ravens next play in a rematch All Hallows on Tuesday before they get it on vs Camden on Saturday.'

2/3/01 DLG51564:  'In response to toms@postandpartners.com, neither Coach Cimmino at Mt.Vernon nor any other coach in section 1 has any input into what league thay are going to play in.  So his idea that Mt.Vernon is ducking White Plains holds no water. I applaud Mt.Vernon for playing the schedule they did.  It's good for them and it's good for Section1 basketball. Hopefully White Plains and Mt. Vernon will meet in the County Center, it could be in the semifinals though based on Mt.Vernon's seeding right now.  W.P. is going to be the 2 seed (Poughkeepsie is now the #1,though they have a game with All Hallows next week). I am a coach in Class A and I am looking foward to the sectional and I know that any dreams of my Walter Panas team of getting to the center have to include a major upset along the way. Next year there will be a new alignment of leagues to deal with . I know that we will go back to class B. The realingmant issue is going to rear its ugly head every year with a majority of all of th decision making be done by principals and athletic directors. Thats why we play the games.'

.2/1/00 privateschools@hotmail.com:  'The Dodson-Draughon duo of Trevor Day School has been falling short as of late. Trevor lost a heart-breaker to Horace Mann earlier this week by 2 in overtime. Kevin Draughon scored 23 points and added 7 assists. Billy Dodson scored 11 and also added 7 assists. Trevor also came up short last night against Loyola in a 55-53 ballgame. In that game, Draughon struggled from the field, but made up for it on the defensive end, giving the Loyola guards a lot to handle. Billy Dodson scored 22, but it wasn't enough to pull Trevor over Loyola.'

I will be talking about NYC and NJ HS hoops. So if anyone has a radio near by, listen in. I received the call today so it is a bit tentative depending on my schedule, and I do have a few meetings to move around. It is The Larry Hardasey Show (sp). I was also on last year because Marion Boykin, a well known boxing writer checks this site out and enjoyed my insight.'
