March, 2001

3/31/01  Keith Mason:  'Today I watched a couple of Mt. Carmel games, one of them went as usual and the other was the end of one of the more impressive runs in sports. The first game I saw was the semifinals of the Young Athletes league were they met Marques Cox's IS 59. Marques got off to a slow start and his team fell down 41-29 in the 3rd quarter but then he got it going slicing threw the defense, dishing, and scoring when the opportunity was there. His team came all the way back and actually took a 48-46 lead threating to knock off the dynasty at Mt. Carmel, but this would not be so as Jarrell Mills would not allow it to happen. Mills scored 16 points in the second half and help give Mt. Carmel a 6 point victory to reach the Young Athletes Final  tomorrow at 3pm at the Gaucho Gym.

In the other game I saw it was for the CYO State Championship, and in this matchup Mt. Carmel played the much bigger St. Joseph squad. Both of these teams got off to terrible starts as the score at the end of 1 was 9-6 in favor of St. Joseph. The second quarter saw St. Joes take over behind a very talented player by the name of Vaughn Haylinger. Haylinger was dominant on the boards and putting up buckets as Mt. Carmel trailed 24-17 at the break. Mt Carmel would turn it up in the 3rd quarter behind the best scorer in the 8th grade class Jarrell Mills. Mills was just unstoppable in the 3rd he helped Mt. Carmel take a 34-31 lead late in the 3rd. Once again Haylinger hit a 3 to tie it up heading into the 4th. The 4th started with Ricky Cadell hitting a 3 to put Mt. Carmel up 37-34 but that would be the last bright spot for the best middle school program in the nation. St. Joe's behind Haylinger would capture the lead and never lose it as they became the first team to beat Mt. Carmel for the state championship in 11 years, ending the 10 straight title streak. So the two longest runs in basketball both came to end this year with Christ the King's girls team losing in the Federation tournament for the first time in 12 years and now Mt. Carmel. One thing I saw in this game is Rick Cadell didn't want to give Jarrell Mills the ball because Mills was shooting a lot, so when Mills did get the ball he went to the basket no matter how many people were on him and how bad of a shot it was. Young players have to learn that your star player has to get the ball because if he isn't getting the ball, when he finally does touch it he will make bad decisions, and cost his team the game.'

3/31/01  St Joseph's from Dutchess County won the CYO boys' varsity championship at Dunwoodie with a 58 - 50 victory over Mt Carmel this afternoon.  According to MC's coach it was the school's first Dunwoodie loss in eight years.  The inside duo of Vaughn Haylinger and Morgan Hall plus the defense of Leonard Lans on Terrell Mills was the difference for St Joe's.  MC's Marques Diggs and Terrell Elliston played well but the team faded in the fourth quarter after beginning it with a trey and a three point lead with 5:49 to play.  Mt Carmel was coming from an earlier victory in the Gauchos' gym  and late in the game it showed.

3/31/01  Coach Kenny Pretlow:  'Riverside Church won its second game at the TTP Spring Fling defeating Sam Rines 49-45. Once again tough full court defense led to the victory. Keydren Clark led the way with 16 and Ricky Soliver added 11.'

They defeated my team (Philly Spirit) in the semifinals at the Sam Rines tournament on 3/26/01. After every game I group my team together before anything and I did not get the opportunity to give the coach and his players their props. I did not want to appear as a sore loser or show a lack of sportsmanship. All of the Gaucho teams are well coached and respond to a crisis on the court very well. 3/22/01 bayshore:  'Shabazz pulled away from Shawnee in the fourth to advance to the TOC final. Final score 48-36. Shabazz led by two after three. They controlled the boards through out and out quicked Shawnee at all five positions. Giles had 13, Mays 11 off the bench and Robinson added 9. Martin and Johnson led Shawnee with 13 and 10.

St. Anthony toyed with Camden Catholic coasting to a 62-42 win. The score was 34-12 at the half and 51-23 after three. The lead was as large as thirty and could have been much worse. CC abandoned Adams to bring the ball up against Ingram and Copeland and the result was not pretty. St Ant's did everything well. Rebound, defense, shoot the three you name it. Everything CC did was contested, every pass, every possession, every shot. Ingram had 20 and Copeland 12. Adams and Bakanowski each had 8 for CC.

My bet TOC final winner - St. Anthony by 15.'

3/20/01 Aaron:  'On April 8th, Brooklyn USA will host the first ever Brooklyn USA Basketball - Jamaal Tinsley College Exposure Camp. This camp is inspired by the amazing story chronicled by ESPN The Magazine of a Bedford-Stuyvesant (Brooklyn) youngster who overcame many inner-city obstacles and negative influences to use the sport of basketball to attend college and earn a college degree. Although he never completed a full year of high school, "Mel" eventually realized his missed opportunities. Through his determination and hard work, Tinsley has blossomed into a NCAA All-American point guard at Iowa State and a likely NBA Draft choice.

The second chance that Jamaal Tinsley took advantage of is now being made available to others who are willing to make the sacrifices needed to succeed in the classroom and on the court. This camp is open to all graduating high school seniors or older players looking to go back to college. College and Junior College coaches will be in attendance.

3/19/00  Newsday:  Amityville: Back-to-Back as Nottingham, Fraser help earn state 'B' crown. St. Mary's Struggles at End,  St. Raymond's roars back, gets LI Lutheran next. Mamadou Diakhate's Out of Time.  Hempstead Can't Finish It, Outscored 32-8 in final 10:45  in state 'A' final.

3/18/00  Steve Grandin likes the public school teams on the New York State tournament page.

3/18/00  Gcdc1:  'NYSPHSAA Boys final score  Schenectady 69 - Hempstead 45.'

3/18/00  Steve Grandin:  'Just got back from the NYSPHSAA finals in Glens Falls, where Schenectady and Amityvillle left little doubt who were the best class A and B teams.

Schenectady pulled away from a 37-37 tie late in the third period of the Class A championship game to crush Hempstead, 69-45, and Amityville shook over pesky Williamsville South, 87-70, in the Class B finals.

Schenectady will face Grady next Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center in one of the Class A semifinals, while Amityville will play Bishop Timon of Buffalo in the Class B semifinal.'

3/18/00  St. Raymond's Ravens are going to Glens Falls again after taking St. Mary's 62 - 60 for the CHSAA championship at Fordham University.  The Ravens trailed throughout, 19 - 10,  30 -20 and 45 - 43 after each of the first three quarters.  They took their first lead of 58 - 57 with less than a minute to play and held on for the win.  Next up is Long Island Lutheran next weekend at the state semis.

3/18/00  PSAL Class final -- quick beats tall, Grady  75, Robeson 60.  At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Grady led Robeson by six,  45 - 39 before they gave away the first inbound pass which Gary Ervin turned into a made foul shot.  That was one of the Falcons few fourth quarter mistakes as they used a 20 - 4 run to go for the easy 15 point win.  They were down 12 - 8 after one, up by seven midway through the second quarter and tied at 26 at the half.  There were many heros for the Falcons -- Michael Clarke,  Quincy Doobie,  Tyquan Goode, Corey Cromer and Woody Souffrant. Gary Ervin got off to a fast first quarter start, but neither he, Lovell Nimmons nor Kenny Adeleke could make a difference for the Robeson Eagles.

LI Lutheran will represent the independent schools upstate. The team has a 17-6 record this year and played a very close game with All Hallows in which they were leading in the second half. 3/14/01 South Jersey News:  Coach Joe Kessler credits his staff for Shawnee's return to the T of C.

3/13/01 Frank McCree:  'Over the past month I have touted the Newark Elementary School Basketball League. I did make one mistake. I mentioned that it is a 40 school league. Actually there are 48 male teams and 42 female, for a total of 90 teams. I applaud the efforts of the board of education in giving the kids an opportunity to play in a safe environment and to learn the game.

However, some of my fellow educators do not. Newark is a district that has been taken over by the state for over five years for poor academic perfomance and shoddy financial record keeping. Barringer, West Side, Central, Shabazz, and Weequahic, have the lowest HSPT scores in the state, lower than Camden High School in fact. Some educators feel that the cost of the program, approximately $400,000 per year, would be better utilized in academic areas.

Coaches are paid $3,000 for a 10 game season. There are also salaries for league directors, supervisors, site directors, score keepers, officials, uniform police, security staff, buses, and drivers. To me, athletics are a vital part of academics and I feel the benefits far outweigh the costs.'

auto80417:  'St. Ray's edge on the boards took its toll on Xavarian as the Ravens won by 9. Molloy took care of business over Holy Cross by 9 as well.'

jdbucks:  'I was at Fordham University today to see the two CHSAA semi-final games. The first game between St. Ray's and Xaverian was kept close by Xaverian's standout sophomore, 6-9 Chris Taft. The Ravens had a very tough time guarding his post moves as nobody had the size to match up with him. Julius Hodge had an off game as he struggled with his shot and did not get many calls when he drove to the hoop. Allen Ray however sparked St. Rays with possibly his best game as a Raven. When Hodge went to the bench with 2 early fouls, Ray drained an array of jumpers to put St. Rays ahead. In the end, St. Ray's athletecism prevailed to give them a double digit victory. In the second game Molloy's big man Wendell Gibson and their ability to get to the foul line were the differences. Holy Cross depended a lot on the three to score and Molloy did a good job defending it during the second half. Gibson found the ball in his hands off rebounds throughout the game due to his size that Holy Cross could not match up with. Molloy hit all of their second half free throws except for one and won the game by double digits.'

3/11/01 John Catera, Aviation Alumnus:  'I was at St John's to see the Aviation vs Banneker "B" semi final game. Banneker won 61-48 but was given a tough game by Aviation. I was impressed by the ball control & quickness of Kareem Bertrand, the Aviation rebounding against a taller Banneker team and the three point shooting of Pete Caris.'

3/10/01 Richard Gallagher:  'Section One's Haldane (Cold Spring) enjoyed a double victory today, as both the boys and girls teams won their Class D regional final games and will be advancing to the state semi-finals next weekend. The Haldane boys, playing at SUNY-Stony Brook, easily defeated Section 9 champion Chester, 60-40. The Blue Devils led by 24 at halftime and easily held on for the victory. At the same time, the Haldane girls were romping over Section 11 champs Mercy, 54-18, in a game played at Marist College.

Girls' hoops doesn't get much mention on this site, but Haldane's record is nothing short of remarkable. Not only are they defending state public and Federation champions, in the past 13 years they have won four state titles, 11 regional titles, and 8 consecutive Section One championships.'

Kids who led the league in scoring, rebounding, etc. will receive awards as well as prime seats for their families and themselves at the game. Also, I believe they are honoring the teams which won their divisions as well. John starred at Babylon HS .. went on to star for the University of Maryland where he received All-ACC rookie team. John also played professional over in Europe. John runs one of the best camps that I have ever worked. He has assembled a terrific staff that works very well with all of their campers. John works extremely hard to let each camper have an enjoyable and fun camp experience. The camp has daily guest lecturers and some of the following people have lectured at the camp, Anthony Glover (SJU), Jason Hernandez and Nick Macarchuk. This camp will be run on July 16th-20th, July 23rd-27th and July 30th-August 3rd. The camp is for the following grades 3rd-10th, but he will probably take younger kids. 3/2/01 bayshore:  'South Jersey Group IV Semifinal -- #16 Shawnee (22-2) 35 – Cherry Hill East (17-10) 32.  In a typical CHE stifling defensive game the Cougars came up short as a tying three missed the mark with :05 left at Shawnee. Shawnee advances to the SJ final @ Atlantic City against the winner of the Atlantic City – Highland Regional game.  6’5” Sr. Mike Wlodarczyk led the Renegades with 12 while 6’5” Jr. Zack Martin contributed 8. Martin endured a 1-13 night from the floor, but his 5-6 free throws down the stretch were pivotal. Shawnee seemed in control at 28-16 until a 10-0 run, fueled by Andy Schwartz’ two treys, pulled CHE within two with 3:48 to play. Schwartz finished with 14. CHE doubling down man-man and match-up zone makes anybody look ugly. They held Camden to their lowest total of the year before losing by 12. Shawnee was clearly frustrated but kept their poise and prevailed in the end.'

3/2/01 bayshore:  'Central Jersey Group III Quarterfinal,  Camden Wilson 70 – Lakewood 57.  Live by the three, die by the three. Once LaSalle bound 6’10” Marquis Gantt (9 pts, 15 reb, 7 blocks, 4 steals) convinced Lakewood to stay out of the paint it was bombs away. Unfortunately for Lakewood the bombs never fell. Lakewood finished 8 for 32(!!) from behind the arc. Subtract out Thomas Carroll and late reserve Duane Richardson who were both 2-3 and that leaves 4 for 26 (3-17 by one player who shall remain nameless). 6’4” Sr. Melvin Garrett led Wilson with 24 pts. 11 of which he scored in a 14-2 run to close out the third period giving Wilson a 10 point lead they never relinquished. 6’2” Jr. Pat Faulk added 16 and 6’1” Sidney Francis had 15.

Miami (football) bound 6’4” Sr. Thomas Carroll led Lakewood with 15 while super So. JR Smith was held to 7 before fouling out. Wilson now travels to Camden against who they are 0-2 this season. Word came that Dajuan Wagner scored 54 tonight in a 35+ pounding of Ocean City. Wagner is now the all-time scoring leader in New Jersey history.'

3/2/01 Coach Will Stasiuk:  'In PSAL playoff action tonight, the higher seeds prevailed, except in one game. In the A league, # 9 seed Cardozo avenged two losses to # 8 seed Campus Magnet with a 68 to 58 victory. Also # 1 seed Paul Robeson defeated # 16 Midwood 66 to 53. In B league action # 3 Urban Peace nipped # 14 Stuyvesant 57 to 51, # 6 Aviation beat # 11 Hunter 60 to 52 and # 2 Banneker defeated # 15 John Bowne and #7 Smith handled #10 Grand St. Campus. There will be two quadrupal headers this weekend featuring 2 B and 2 A games at Lehman College Saturday and at Hunter College Sunday. For exact times, matchups, predictions and past results see www.psalhoops.com.'

3/2/01 Frank:  'Seton Hall Prep advanced to the North Jersey Parochial A semi-finals by routing Don Bosco 63-31 in West Orange. Hall led 24-9 in first quarter and coasted to a very easy win despite Jamar Nutter going to bench after 6 minutes with early foul trouble. Don Bosco played poorly and displayed a very soft defense that allowed the Pirates to run any play they wanted to run. Anthony Drejaj led the Hall with 16 points in a game that coach Farrell emptied the bench early. Seton Hall University assistant Fred Hill, jr. and Kelly's older brother, T.K. Tripucka were at the game checking out Mr. Nutter. The Prep hosts the winner of the Bishop Francis- Bergen Catholic game Saturday at 2:00, that was played tonight 1 mile away at the Our Lady of Valley gymnasium in Orange.

Bishop Francis upset Bergen County champion Bergen Catholic 65-61 to move on to meet Seton Hall on Saturday. Essex County teams went 2 for 2tonight against Bergen County Parochial A squads.'

3/2/01 Keith Mason:  'I saw on your site someone mentioned Sean Banks. I have seen this kid and he is the real deal, he would start for any team in the city right now. I saw him completely outplay Russell Robinson, so you know he is a talent. Last time I saw Sean play he was about 6'4 and if he is 6'7 now, wow that kid will surprise a lot of people in the summer time. Sean is very similar to Julius Hodge but doesn't have as good of a jumpshot but if that J improves, he will be on every coach's wish list in his senior year.  Also I will be at the 8th grade borough challenge tomorrow at Minisink, first game is at 6pm between Brooklyn and Queens for 3rd place and the championship will be between the Bronx and Manhattan. Some of the players in this event are from Brooklyn Saiqoun Stone, Chris Lowery (1st game he caught an alley-oop off the backboard) and Eugene Harvey. On the Queens team you have Marques Cox, Shalah White and Salvador Patvilo. The Bronx has the most loaded lineup with Brandon Brock, Sean Hilliard, Charles Vasser, Scott Draughorn, Mike Shipman and possibly Tyrell Biggs who was a no show in game 1. And finally the Manhattan team has Jarrell Mills, Terrell Elliston and Steve Walker. Both games should be very good.'

3/1/01  Jason Griffin:  'Here are a couple suggestions for you Jersey 2003 prospects: 1. Loul Deng - 6'8" forward, Blair Academy(he was left off your list, but he is #1 prospect in NJ),  2. Jamar Nutter - point guard - Seton Hall Prep,  3. Marquis Webb - 6'3" swingman - Paterson Catholic,   4. Sean Banks - 6''7" forward/center - Bergen Catholic (underrated, best player on a good team that starts 4 sophmores),  5. Willie Irick- 6'6" forward - Teaneck,  6. Eric Cangelosi - 6'5" forward Camden Catholic,  7. Nick Cangelosi- 6'5" forward Camden Catholic,  8. Mike Nardi - 6'1" point guard St.Patricks,  8. Jesse Holley - 6'3" swingman Roselle (also left off list, most underrated, all around player in Union County. He does it all.)  9. Charlie Villanueva - 6'11" center Blair Academy,  10. Shaun Griffin - 5'10" point guard Johnson ( left off list, gets no recognition because he plays for a small school with a poor b-ball history, but is better than Marvin Taylor, Eric Bynes and Everett Morgan, and just as good as Nardi). He ate them up in AAU.   11. Darryl Watkins - 6'9" center PCT,  12. Grant Billimeier - 6'9" center St.Patricks (way overrated, he has only height, project at best).  13. Eric Bynes - guard East Brunswick,  14. Max Schafer 6'1" point guard- DePaul Catholic,  15. Marvin Taylor - point guard- New Brunswick (great potential),  16. Jason Paterson - shooting guard St.Patricks,  17. Marvin Richardson - Bishop Francis,  18. Cammel Drummond - guard Piscataway,  19. Joe Sandberg - point guard - Bergen Catholic,  20. Everett Morgan - 6'0" guard - Old Bridge.'
