4/30/01 Brooklyn Scout NYC JUCO Update.
4/30/01 Keith Mason: 'I have a report on IS8 and Chase the Game plus news about the Rumble in the Bronx.'
4/30/01 Bencook101: 'As a major follower of elite AAU teams, I would like to take this time to put Long Island Lightning 17U Gold in with the likes of the top AAU programs in the Metro area. I caught a glimpse of their act in the Prov. Jam Fest, Wayne Simone's Tourney @ Yale, and most recently in Chase the Game @ Fordham. After rather impressive showings in both the Jam Fest and in Yale, posting back to back 2-1 records, they really outdid themselves in Chase the Game @ Fordham. I witnessed the most breathtaking AAU game this spring when they matched up against the NYC Ravens. Losing a nailbiting 80-78 thriller in OT, Long Island Lightning 17U Gold put themselves on the map. They even caught the attention of Ravens coach Gary DeCesare who said, "We are lucky we got out of this dogfight alive." I was there, and what a dogfight it really was. As fellow commentator Dick Vitale would put it, this team is for Real with a capital R baby!'
4/30/01 The Brooklyn All Stars team profile is now on the team page just past the Bronx Gauchos and before the Brooklyn Beasts.

In the first game Exodus arrived late and were penalized by beginning the game at the second quarter down 16 - 0. He made the Daily News All City first team, and he had 21 in the championship loss to Grady.' Web note: I just blew this one. 4/25/01 John Humenn, The Journal News: ' Guard Kudjo Sogadzi, who led Nyack to the Class B state semifinals last season, appears headed for Fairfield University. Sogadzis signing is imminent, according to Nyack coach Gary Gray. Another of his players, forward Alvin Carter, also could be bound for Fairfield. The Stags are coached by Tim OToole, a White Plains native and Stepinac graduate.
The 6-foot-3 Sogadzi averaged 20.8 points in leading the Indians to their first sectional title since 1994. He was named the sectional tournament MVP and The Journal News Rockland County player of the year. The native of France moved to the United States in the fall of 1998. Sogadzi enrolled at East Side High in Newark, N.J., and helped lead the team to a sectional championship. He left East Side the following season when his coach was fired for illegally recruiting foreign players.
Sogadzi enrolled at Nyack in December 1999. He played little as a junior after joining the team in mid-season but emerged as one of the top players in Section 1 as a senior. Sogadzi, who attended the adidas ABCD camp last summer, lives with Carters family in Upper Nyack. The two became friends while playing for the New Jersey Roadrunners AAU team.'
4/25/01 Russ Blake: 'Rivals/Alliance Sites Not Up -- I wanted to drop you this note to let you know that the Rivals.com sites seem to be down, except for the message boards. Of course, it would have been nice to know this information from someone previously at Rivals or now at Alliance Sports, but most of us found out when we tried to pull up our sites today. As a result, JUCO Junction will be placing updates on the message board for the time being until a more palatable option becomes available. I would greatly appreciate it if you could put these links up for me on your site. Thanks in advance for your help.

4/23/01 MaeDan74: 'To Rich Kosik aka BooksNBall -- Thank you for your truthful and "cut to the chase" article on Daryl Hill who is a senior in high school and has yet to take the SAT. I often tell my son who is into basketball but sees basketball as the great hope of life. All your queations are good and you should go to all the schools, programs and camps to drill this fact into the heads of these ball players! Do this even if the self-serving adults connected with these kids don't feel responsible enough to do it. All these kids see are scores and performance on court. They need to be hit with reality that the BOOKS matter! Let them know that there are no shortcuts.Thanx...' Web note: Rich's original email was posted 4/20/01.
4/23/01 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'Pro Style 2K 1 "Winter League" -- There was a mistake in the reporting of the Biddy championship as the Church beat the Gauchos 50-43. Aslo the Riverside juniors overcame a 16 point deficit and rallied to beat the Gauchos . Overall the Church won 3 of the divisions and came in 2nd in a another. Hard to beat the Church on a Sunday.' Web note: My mistake. The correction and earlier stories are on the Pro Style 2K 1 page.

I got the official IS schedule today. ***I assisted in coaching Brooklyn USA (a) today at IS8 vs SONDAY Express. We got handled by them quit easily, even without Rashad Bell and Julius Hodge being there. They did , however, have sophmore standouts Marlon Smith and Japhet McNeil. ***At the And 1 tournament in Brooklyn, losers bracket, the Queens RimRockers beat Antioch, behind strong play from Colson Dempster (Newtown) and big play from Adam Hayes (McClancy). Greg Dwyer (McClancy), and Mark Debono (Molloy) helped keep the RimRockers in the game with consistent effort while Nick Hamilton ran the point solid for RR. Michael Xifaras (St. Francis Prep) came off the bench for the RimRockers to provide some solid defense and rebounding while Carlos Arellano (St. John's Prep) provided a spark in the paint. 4/21/01 Louis Xifaras (Director and Coach of the Queens Rimrockers Basketball Program): Friday night @ IS8 -- Game 1: Riverside (a) vs Rock Steady Beacon At the half the Church was up 44-30. Wendell Gibson showed up at halftime and warmed up for a while. Chris Taft was on Rock Steady. This created the 2nd half matchup of Taft vs Gibson. Taft outhustled Gibson, however Gibson won the muscle match inside the paint. Teddy Mumford was on fire with the jumpers. The Church won in a nice finish 82-75.
Game 2: L.I. Panthers (a) vs Rebel LI Panthers had the big name players...#7 Kenny Adeleke, #6 Curtis Sumpter, #4 Tim Doyle, #11 Michael Claxton, however the Rebel came out firing. They opened up a 22-15 lead at the end of 1. Pete Edwards kept calling Adeleke "Layups" because Kenny missed about 10 layups in the game. #10 on the Rebels had a nice game and a sweet short range jumper. at the half the Rebels has a surprising 41-35 lead. The Panthers came out hot in the 2nd half but didnt manage to hold down the Rebel as the score was 65-59 Rebel at the end of 3. A great 4th quarter by Michael Claxton led the Panthers to a 87-85 comback win over the impressive Rebel.
This was my first trip to IS 8, and i can tell why it is one of the best Leagues to get into. Pete Edwards does a great job running it.' Web note: Earlier stories, rosters and schedule on the IS8 Spring Classic 2001 page.

4/20/01 Peter Abraham, The Journal News @ the Wheelchair Classic.
4/20/01 Pdiddy9682: 'The Wheelchair Classic final 4 was a day of blowouts - the Bronx over Manhattan and Brooklyn over Queens. The Bronx never backed down from Manhattan, they received strong offensive games from Ben Gordon, Francisco Garcia, Julius Hodge and Allan Ray. Manhattan got 28 from Lenny Cooke, who was the overall MVP. Wendell Gibson, Ricky Soliver and Famous Brown played solid games but it was not enough to stop the Bronx. Brooklyn crushed Queens in the consolation behind MVP Tommie Eddie. Queens was led by team MVP Showtime Hill, Ryan Williams and Rashad Bell.'
4/19/01 Insiders Report: Jason Fraser Expands List -- Syracuse Added.
4/19/01 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'Riverside Church returned from a sucessful tournament in France by reaching the finals for the 4th straight time. The tournament started with a exhibition game vs. a division 2 pro team from France that featured Ron Anderson (ex Philadelphia 76er). Anderson hit 31 pts in the 1st half and led his team to a 51-31 lead. At halftime we decided to put Ricky Soliver on Anderson to try to slow him down.Ricky held him to 5 pts and Riverside rallied to a 87-83 win. Wendell Gibson and Ted Munford hit 16 and 18 and Ricky added 15. The tournament pool games started with a Riverside 75-60 win over a team from Russia. Wendell Gibson had 19 pts and 14 boards, Ricky Soliver added 16 with 5 steals and Ted Munford 12 and Keydren Clark 10. The next pool game was vs. Lemans from France and Riverside won a tough 58-53 win. Ricky Soliver led the way with 17pts 5 boards and 4 steals and Wendell Gibson adeed 13pts and 10 boards and Tyquan Goode pitch in 7pts 6 assists and 6 steals. The quarterfinals were next and the oppenent was Cordoba from Argentina and Riverside pull out a 54-44 win. Ricky Soliver hit for 20 and 8 boards, Ted Munford hit 13, Keydren Clark and Rob Barrett hit 10 each. The finals wre vs. Real Madrid which is the junior olympic team from Spain. In a tough game the Church lost a 82-77 decision. The fouls were an amazing 32-10 deficit for Real Madrid and made it tough to play our man to man defense. Ricky was unbelievable hitting 30 pts inluding 9 threes and Wendell despite constant double teams hit 21 and grabbed 17 boards. Keydren Clark off the bench hit 13 pts but it was not enough. Overall we played without two key players as Peedy Nelson and Mike Clark were injured in the beginning of the tourney and did not play in the playoffs. Ricky Soliver averaged 18 pts 7 boards and 4 steals, Wendell 14 and 10.6 boards Ted avg 10 Tyquan avg 6pts 6 assists and 4 steals and Keydren hit for 10pts also. The Church was proud to represent our country as well as we did.'
4/19/01 NJ Hoops: Talent at Top 100.
4/19/01 Steve in LI: 'The Walt Whitman Gym had over 30 college coaches in attendance tonight watching the 4th Annual Metro All Star games. Coaches from Division I schools such as UNC, Kentucky, Stony Brook, Bucknell and Georgia Tech (Paul Hewitt himself was on hand) enjoyed three games:a sophomore game, a junior game and a senior game all of which pitted the best private school players against the best public school players. In the sophmore game, the private school ballers won 57 -43 with Mamadou Diakhate (St. Mary's) scoring 24 points and coming away with the MVP trophy. The game was broken open in the fourth quarter when Daon Merritt (St.Raymond's) hit Mitchell Beauford (Christ the King) with an alley-oop from half court. Mamadou played exceptionally well all game and Daon took over the game in the last five minutes and showed why he is recognized as one of the best sophomore point guards in the country. Rashon Clark (Beach Channel) received the MVP award for the public squad.
In the junior game, also won by the private school team 85-71, Timmy Doyle (St. Dominic's) came away with MVP honors after scoring 18 points.Sheldon Franklin (Our Savior) scored 25. Anthony Noble (Uniondale) won MVP for the public school team.
The private schools made it a complete sweep by also taking the senior game 84-79. Cameron Bennison (Our Savior) took MVP with 16 points. Jeff Green (Upper Room) led all scorers with 21 including 6 threes. Dwayne Byfield (St. Mary's) had 14. The public school MVP was Matt Klimkoski (West Islip).
Much thanks must be given to the founder of the event, Dave Edwards, and all the volunteers (especially Mr. Simon) who made the event the success it was. Our kids had an opportunity that otherwise would that have not been available without the dedication these people have shown over the years.'
4/18/01 Thanks to Steve Ricciardi for his team profile update on St Michael's program on the team page.
4/18/01 Craig Brandon: 'NJ 16 & Under State playoffs began yesterday and will continue through Friday with six pools of four teams each. The quarterfinals and semis will be played at the Rex Plex in Elizabeth on Saturday, the 21st. Quarterfinals start at 10:30 and 12:00 on two courts; semis are 3:30 and 5:00. The third place and championship games will be played on Sunday, the 22nd at New Brunswick High School, times to be decided. The top four teams qualify for the AAU Nationals.'
4/18/01 Eurobas (from France): 'Gauchos ended 7th out of 8 in French tournament. They were not good at all Riverside Church lost against Madrid in the Championship game in Cholet Tournament The best players for Riverside were Gibson and Soliver. Riverside Church played with intensity but was not enough to battle against the Spanish team. Soliver shows a lot of potential. Even some college coaches came to see him play among some other international talents. '
4/18/01 Pdiddy9682: 'In the opening game the Bronx was led by hot shooting Julius Hodge, spectacular dunks by Ben Gordon and big time offensive efforts by Allan Ray and Donnie McGrath from the bench. Queens kept it close for a half behind big time dunks by Ryan Williams and solid penetrating and three point makes from Showtime Hill. However Queens got little on the offensive end from Rashad Bell which factored in the loss.
The second game featured Brooklyn vs Manhattan. Brooklyn might have been the deepest team going in to the game. That was until a short handed Manhattan Squad added Wendell Gibson Marvin, McCullough and Ricky Soliver in addition to Lenny Cooke who was already with Manhattan. Brooklyn had a stagnant offense for most of the game before they rallied in the 2nd half to take a 2 point lead in the 4th quarter. In the end the human fast break named Lenny Cooke was too much for Brooklyn who lost a close game.
The final should be a classic. But I think Manhattan will come out on top behind the though inside duo of Cooke and Gibson and the solid overall play of Soliver.'
4/18/01 Brooklyn Scout: 'Chris Sandy, a 6-1 point guard who was named to the NJCAA All-American second team last week, signed with Fresno State. Sandy, from Fort Greene and Newtown H.S., led Westark (AK) to fifth place in the national tournament and averaged 14 points and 5 assists this season.
Also, Abdel Raho, a 6-7 forward who played at Globe Tech this season, has inked with St. Peter's and coach Bob Leckie.'

4/18/01 Uniondale Sonics: 'The Wheelchair Classic games at St Johns for Tuesday evening did not live up to many of the games from the past. The first game was exciting in the beginning but the Bronx team was eventually too strong and too talented for the Queens team. Too much Ben Gordon - the guy is a high school player with a pro body and a pro game. He always seems poised doesn't trash talk and plays the game from end to end. The other bright spots for the Bronx team where Julius Hodge (St Rays) and Donnie McGrath (JFK Westchester). McGrath will be one of the top five players in the state next year. From the Queens team three players were shining stars Ryan Williams (Redemption Christian) who was dunking all over the place and he displayed ball handling skills and nice looking jumpshot. Tristan Smith, the Amityville HS standout ran the floor well and dished out several memorable assists to fellow teamates. But the one player from Queens who stood out was Darryl "ShowTime" Hill (Cardoza). The guy has the full package a slick handle, speed, range on his jumper and he is fearless when he penetrates to basket. Not one player on the Bronx team could defend this guy end to end. I feel he is the second best guard in the state other than Ben Gordon.
In the nightcap Manhattan prevailed over the Brooklyn team. Brooklyn just seemed out of sync. Also they had no answer for Lenny Cooke. The guy is too big and strong he was beating the Brooklyn big men off the dribble every other possession downcourt. At times he would isolate his defender while playing the point position. The bright spots for the Brooklyn Team were Kenny Adeleke (Robeson), Tommie Eddie ( Boys & Girls) and Woody Souffrant (Grady) who had several nifty cross-over and stutter step dribbles while pushing the ball in transition. Overall Brooklyn just never shifted into a smooth rhythm and it hurt their chances of winning the game because they had the more overall talented team.'

4/17/01 Steve: 'This weekend the 15U Roadrunner team made it to the semifinals of the adidas tournament held at Sacred Heart in Conn. After finishing pool play, we beat a western Connecticut team in the quarters and lost a close game to the very strong host team, the Connecticut Select, in the semis. Next up is the Speice Run'N Slam tournament in Indiana the first week in May. As always, wish us luck!'
4/16/01 Nathan Blue: 'The Long Island Panthers went 2-1 in pool play and lost to Balitmore Blue to not make it out of the pool. One big reason they lost the game to Balitmore Blue was in the opening minute. Paul Robeson star Gary Irvin dislocated his right index finger (6-8 weeks). Baltimore Blue took advantage of that. The Panthers kept it close losing the game by 2pts in the end. In three Games the Long Island Panthers were basically followed by ... St. John's, Seton Hall, Indiana, North Carolina, Virgina, and about 10 other big time schools.
Here are the final stats for the top 6 Panthers. Kenny Adekele 32pts 23 rebs 7 blocks 3 steals, Jason Fraser 24pts 20 rebs 13 blocks 4 assists, Curtis Sumpter 26pts 14 rebs 6 blocks 8 assists, Charlie Villanueva 27pts 12 rebs 4 steals 6 assists, Daryl Hill 25pts 18 assists 8 steals 7 rebs, Tim Doyle 17pts 10 rebs 6 assists 2 charges.'
4/16/01 Abdu-Allah Torrence: 'Washington Hts. Warriors 17 and u elite went 4-1 in the Connecticut Select Tournament at Sacred Heart University, losing in the final 8 to Brooklyn USA by two points. 6'8 F Kiril Waschmann averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds. PG Ruandy Melo controlled the team with good decision making, shot selection and solid on the ball defense. He took a team-high 5 charges. 6'4 G Jerome Simmons averaged 13 points per game and played aggressive man defense as well. 6'4 F Sam Moise contributed with consistent inside scoring and defensive rebounding. 6'10 Rafael Madera played solid post defense and rebounded and blocked shots consistently. 6'5 G Khary Moore played well off the bench, as did Jose Frias, Idiongo Okoro, James Brown, Zach Ozuna, Mike Mercedes and Nimai Garrett.'
4/16/01 Three of five games in the 1st Annual NJ Hoops Showcase are finished. Tony Sagona's Jersey Shore Warriors beat Rick Barrett's Gym Rats 80 - 70 behind their MVP, Chris Niesz, a 6-9 senior from Middleton North. The Gym Rat MVP was 6-4 junior Dom Mejia from Eastern. The second game was low scoring with Chris Oden's RAP easily outdistancing the Central Jersey Hawks 62 - 35. The RAP MVP was Columbia 6-1 senior Dezmond Morgan, while Terrence Todd was the Hawk MVP with only nine points. In the third game the Penn Jersey Panthers dressed only six players with three of them not on the program's roster. One of those players was their 7-0 Chris Charles of Cripus Attucks, Pa ranked in the class of 2001 as # 146 by PrepStars and committed to Seton Hall. Chris and PJP MVP Zach Martin who hit six treys helped surprise coach Brian Crawford's Newark Rams 65 - 51 despite a solid effort from the Ram's MVP, Mike Nardi.

4/14/01 LFBALL: 'Thank God for the Wheel Chair Classic All Star Game. I am sooo tired of watching those all star games where the kids play uninspired basketball. For years the Wheel Chair classic has provided us with great games played by kids who really want to play. When I watch the Mickey D game or the adidas game I start wondering why they exist. Is it to support a charity? Many say yes!! But we all know the only real charity games are the Wheel Chair Classic. The Mickey D game does provide money to the Ronald McDonald House. Where does the adidas money go? I am sure they support a charity.
The adidas teams seemed to be picked during the summer at the ABCD camp and the play this year was awful to say the least. Why play if you are not going to play hard. I guess they were told to go 50 percent to avoid getting injured and hurting their chances of making future NBA money. Most who played in the adidas game seemed to be coasting as if they were waiting for the NBA draft.
I thought the best game this year was the Wendy's Classic in Chi town. What an entertaining game. Did Will the Thrill show Darryl Showtime who the entertainer was. Anyone remember Will the Thrill coming up to NY two summers ago when he was heading to 11th grade to participate in a pro am type all-star game with MEN at Rucker Park (155th street, Harlem)? We knew then what he would be in the future and he proved it last year at Rumble in the Bronx at Fordham U when he played for a Wisconsin team that dominated the Gauchos amongst others. I have not erased the Wendy Classic tape off my Tivo system. It was that good! Adidas Game, erased before it was over.

4/12/01 Keith Mason of the Apple's Best High School Playaz: 'Possibly the biggest upset in Governor's Cup history occured today with the Willie Howie All-Stars beating Abyssinnian 127-125 in overtime. On paper this game was a 20 point blowout, but Willie Howie played with a lot of heart. They trailed 91-80 with about 5 minutes left in the second half, but outscored Abyssinnian 23-12 the rest of they way to put the game into an extra frame. Willie Howie scored the first 5 points of the overtime, but they could not keep the lead as Abyssinnian would come back to tie the game at 125. But then a Willie Howie player was fouled and he hit both free throws with 4 seconds left. Kendell Provet got the ball for the defending champs and put up a 3 point attempt from 25 feet with two defenders on him at the buzzer and it came up just short, hitting the front rim. The second game was a forefeit as Kips Bay had Lashard Duren who played with the Washington Heights Warriors who were eliminated and then played with Kips Bay yesterday. What they should've done was make LPAC play Exodus since Duren was illegal against them. Nobody should get a free ride to the championship. But anyway the championship is now Willie Howie vs. the LPAC Knights for the 2001 Governors Cup championship'.

4/12/01 Hoop Scoop: 'Yesterday was the first day that high school seniors can sign a National Letter-of-Intent during the spring signing period, but the big news is that Rivals.com is going out of business. While this is good news for paid web sites, such as our own, it is not good news for you, because competition in a free market place makes everybody do their job that much better. It also ensures that you will have a variety of ways to look at things, which is essential for you to sort out various facts and ideas and come to your own conclusions. The demise of Rivals is also too bad, because we think they have made tremendous strides during the last year under the direction of Dave Telep, who is widely regarded as one of the bright young stars in the business. ...'

Ryan Williams hit 19 added 11 boards, Peedy Nelson added 18 and Jason Wingate and Kiki Clark hit 10 each. Riverside blew a 8 point lead with 3 minutes to go by missing 5 free throws and missing a dunk. Kiki missed a three at the buzzer but led the way with 16 Eicky Soliver added 14. The last game was a 30 point rout of the Bray Center with Jason, Kiki, Ricky and Peedy hitting double figures. The playoffs began with Team California and a unbelievable 3 OT marathon but Riverside prevailed with a 75-64 victory. Ryan Williams 17pts and 12 rebounds Ricky Soliver 19pts Peedy Nelson 15 and Jason Wingate hit 13, Shakiem Mitchell added 12 rebounds to the effort. Jason hit a three at the buzzer to send the game to the third ot.Ricky hit a and one three fouling out Bobby Jones (Dominquez) who hit two drives to send the game into the first OT. Riverside is now off to France for the Cadet Tournament in Cholet France.'.
4/9/01 Abdu-Allah Torrence: 'The Warriors 10th grade team just came back form Providence Jamfest and had very good experience. For a team that took its first trip of the spring they made it to the qaurterfinals and lost to the Tim Thomas Playaz by seven. They came back form a 20 point deficit in the second half to tie it at 50 all. But unfortunately they could not sustain the intensity. They were led by Emmanuel Quezada, Junior Bernal, Saliym Wilson, Jason Romer, Steve Robinson, and Jason Romer. Like last year Tim Thomas beat the Warriors in the Jamfest in the quarterfinals and the defeat was avenged at Ct. Select a week later in the championship. Lets see if they have a repeat performance.'
4/9/01 Glenn L. Bynes: 'The NJ All Stars 16 and under team performed well at the Boo Williams Tourney in Hampton Va this past weekend. They finished the weekend 3-1 with wins over Boo Williams, an AAU team from North Carolina, and a forfeit victory. The NJ All Stars who were coached by Art Pierson suffered only 1 loss to a Georgia AAU team led by the son of NBA all time top 50 player, Patrick Ewing. Everett Morgan and Eric Bynes of the NJ Wildcats were instrumental in the games this past weekend for the NJ All Stars. It was said that this was the best performances that was put on by the All Stars from NJ since the featured All American Jason Williams and High School All American Dante Jones. The All Stars from NJ weren't looked at as one of the top teams to compete by the 24 teams that entered the tourney but they proved that they belonged in the event by winning the pool that they were in, and playing in the "Final Four" at Hampton University on Sunday April 8, 2001. There were many college coaches in attendance in addition to recruiting analyst, Tom Konchalski.'

.4/8/01 Kbhjr14: 'The NYC Jaguars opened their 2001 summer with impressive games this weekend in Providence at the Jamfest. The Jaguars played Cheshire Academy in the first game losing a controversial 2 point game. Kevin Hamilton led all scorers in the game with 22 points. Solid play was given by Tarik Viaer-McClymont, Jamaal Wagner and Brian Houlihan. Next up were the very tough Wolfpack loaded with talent like Lenny Cooke, Adrian Walton,Tommy Eddie etc. The Jaguars had no problem coasting most of the game and finally winning a three point contest. It was Walton's 3 three pointers in the last 23 seconds that got the game close. Kevin Hamilton again led all scorers with 20 points. Brian Houlihan had 12, Kevin Diffley had 8. Jamaal Wagner played great defense on some of the superstars often not letting them get to the basket. Very solid team win. Miguel Gonzalez ran the show for the Jaguars. Final game was a two point loss to the New Jersey Demons. Another controversal call with two seconds left did it to the Jaguars. Kevin Hamilton had 19 points Tarik Viaer McClymont had 10 and Kevin Diffley had 10. The Demons had the 6'9" killer in "Mr. Deng" the sophmore who had 22 points in the contest. In all it was a good start for the Jaguars playing in the open division losing two games by a total of 4 points.'
.4/8/01 Steve in LI: 'An amazing story occurred on Friday night at the Charlie Weber Tournament when the Long Island Roadrunners 15U team (playing in the 16U Division) was handed an 11 point loss by the mighty Gator program from North Carolina. They had incredible size with a front line that measured 67, 66 and 64 . We couldnt come close to matching that because only five of our players made it to Philadelphia on time. (The rest got caught in that Friday night, Staten Island traffic.) Our five measured 61, 6, 511, 510 and 59 and were all guards. Our tallest player was shorter than their smallest! As you can imagine, the crowd started to gather in order to enjoy the dunk contest which was surely about to begin. But surprisingly, our team dug down deep and played a remarkable game. We were down only 10 at the half. The crowd continued to swell, no longer looking for poster shots, but instead, admiring the heroic effort being put forth by a clearly overmatched squad. A few more players arrived in the second half but obviously they were of little help after a grueling five hour car ride. The original five played the fourth quarter and got the game within eight before succumbing to fatigue. At the end, they just dropped to the floor in puddles of their own sweat to the cheers of those people who were privileged enough to have witnessed such a remarkable exhibition of courage. The players stumbled to the parking lot and helped each other climb into my truck. On the way back to the hotel, I realized that the group of kids that I had taken to the game that evening had taken a collective step toward manhood. My utmost respect goes out to Nicky Carter, Kevin Spann, Nick Burke, Matt Hahn and Steven Harney. We went 1-1 in the other two games beating the Sky's the Limit team from Maryland on Saturday. However, the Friday night game was something special.'

He was 0-3 from the field (all three pointers) and had one turnover. He had "goose eggs" in every other statistical category, but the U.S. All-Stars still won, 96-76. The MVPs were UNC recruit Melvin Scott (12 points, 4-7 from three, and two steals) for the Capital team and future Clemson Tiger Chey Christie (20 points, 8-11 from the field, and four assists).'

4/3/01 Coach Tom Sampogna: 'Any players who feel that they have been overlooked and need to go JUCO for the next 1 or 2 years please know that the coaches at Westchester Community College will be having workouts in the next few weeks for all those interested in playing at WCC next season. We already had one workout this past Sunday and had players from Connecticut, the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn. We would like a larger portion of the workout to be from Westchester the next time around. So if any coaches know of players who have to go the JUCO route please contact any of the coaches at 914-785-7895. If need be please respond to Coach Sampogna at this email address: TomS@postandpartners.com. We encourage any players who feel they can play higher than they are presently being recruited to come. A date for the next workout will be posted on this website in the next week to come.'

4/3/01 BooksNball aka Rich Kosik: 'The championships have been decided, the nets have been cut down and the happiness of wining the championships and the disappointment of coming close still echo loudly in high school and college gyms throughout the metropolitan area. Another high school season has come to an end. But, the sound picks up once again as the spring tournaments explode on the scene and players are on the run to tournaments both near and far. It's my hope that the players and their community coaches will make this part of "their" one shining moment as they strive to achieve of becoming the best student athlete they can be. This is also a treacherous time as just when the focus should be on making a strong run to passing the final exams in June. Many players will be distracted by all these games, the late night trips back home, the homework assignments missed, the tests not properly prepared for, will put their eligibility and futures in harms way. Ultimately, it is their decision to find the balance between their academic and basketball responsibilities. But, all of the adults working with these youngmen, what will you be doing to assist them in following the right path to success? Will you be checking their academic progress, really checking?, and if their grades are not up to a high standard will you tell them to stay home on a school night or counsel their parents to have them stay home over a weekend and study and please, please don't have them attend any tournaments the weekend before final exams. You know I have to say this in parting, check out the mirror and ask yourself, are you part of the solution or part of the problem? Good luck to all and do the right thing for all involved.'
4/2/01 Droppoff: 'The division 1 championship for 8th grade for the Island Garden Super league will be Glen Steinberg's Warriors team versus "T"'s Panthers. The Warriors advanced to the finals beating Rising Stars and LI Lightning in the playoffs while the Panthers advanced beating another LI Lightning team and the Stratford Lions. Warriors are led by Mike Crisci and Anthony Clarke while the Panthers are led by Ray Arnold and Trevone (Poppy) Hughes. However in the semifinal game, Anthony Clarke put up his hands to defend himself versus another player and both were kicked out of the game, and subsequently he was suspended one game (the championship game) by Island Garden although no punches were thrown. Should be a good game anyway.'

4/2/01 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'Riverside Church lost a heartbreaker to the Tim Thomas Playaz 47-45 in the semi's of the TTP tourney. Ricky Soliver (18pts) three pointer at the buzzer went in and out. The Riverside 15's lost a close 49-45 game to the Hudson Boy's club. Auturo Dubois and AJ Price were named all tournament.'
4/2/01 Brooklyn USA: 'Brooklyn USA's 14-under team defeated Bayshore (NJ) AA 75-54 in the finals of the 3rd Annual Spring Fling conducted by the Tim Thomas Playaz'. Brooklyn USA took control early with strong defense and built a 39-22 halftime advantage. Bayshore rallied midway through the second half to get within 10 points with under 11 minutes remaining, but successive threes by Eugene Harvey recaptured the momentum for the winners. Harvey, named the tourney's MVP, led six Brooklyn USA players in double figures with 13 points. He was followed by Levance Fields (12 points), Clinton Hayden (12), Shawn Lawrence (11), Derrick Echols (11) and Saiquon Stone (10). Fields and Stone joined Harvey on the all-tournament team.
Brooklyn USA advanced to the 14-under finals with a 67-24 romp over the Jersey Heat, taking charge with an 8-0 run just before the half. Brooklyn then outscored the Heat by a 37-7 margin in the second half. Harvey again led the scorers with 12 points while Echols added 10 and Nyan Boateng 9. In pool play, Brooklyn USA defeated the North Jersey Tornadoes (71-38, Stone with 16 points), Sam Rines (66-19) and the New Jersey Knights (56-25).
A side note to the 14-under championship was that former Brooklyn USA player Jermaine Brown secured his first major tournament title as a coach. Brown was a point guard on Brooklyn USA teams that included Jamaal Tinsley, Allen Griffin and Trevor Diggs.'
4/2/01 Coach Carl B. Clark: 'In the 1st Annual BCANY Coaches vs Cancer Girls all-Star Game held at Monroe-Woodbury High School, the DownState Team defeated the UpState team 74-67 benind MVP Nastossia Boueicault (Sheepshead Bay HS)20 points, Cheise George (Dwight School),12 points, Cindy Gonzalez (Murry Bregtraum HS)11 points and Molly Brothers (Bellport High School),scored 10 points. The DownState team trailed 28-23 at the half.'
4/1/01 Keith Mason, The Apple's Best High School Ballaz': 'Mt. Carmel was coming off just their second loss of the season, and it was clear they weren't going to have 3 losses. Despite a slow start as they trailed 9-6 to start the first quarter, they were able to outplay IS 113 the rest of the game. The score was 11 up at the end of 1, mainly because Mt. Carmel star 5'8 SG Jarrell Mills did not score in the first quarter missing all 5 of his shots. But he heated up in the second quarter scoring 10 points while making 5 of 7 shots. 5'8 SG Terrell Elliston also stepped it up for Mt. Carmel as they were able to take a 36-26 lead into the locker room. Playing well for 113 was 5'8 PG Chris Reyes and 6'3 C Antonio Pena. The 3rd quarter saw Mt. Carmel continue to pull away as they would open up a 13 point lead in the quarter. Then Coach Kevin Williams decided to give the 5th and 6th graders on the team some experience, but the plan back fired as 113 came back and trailed only 54-51 with about 3 minutes left in the 4th. But then the starters were inserted and that would be the game as Mills would continue putting up buckets and finished the game with 25 and made 11 of his 17 shots after the first quarter. Mt. Carmel won the game 64-56. Jarrell Mills was named MVP, and Chris Reyes earned the sportsmanship award for his great effort. Reyes was able to get to the basket at will and created fits for Mt. Carmel. Also I will have major updates on my site on 4/2, including updated rankings.'

4/1/01 Eddie Oliver - HoopsUSA, ozone@sccoast.net: 'I have made a strong stand for high schools who do not or are not allowed to recruit players and for those who lose players after years of hard work to those schools. It would be good to get your feelings on the subject. I just simply feel that having a regular high school playing schools with all high profile transfer players is like them playing the National Junior College Champions or a small NCAA school.'
