5/29/01 Tom Jennings, President Westchester Hawks: 'NY Regionals, Long Island Garden -- Westchester Hawks defeated NYC Gauchos, 48-47. After a wonderful, well-run tournament, with outstanding play from the teams involved, the Westchester Hawks defeated the defending champion NYC Gauchos in the finals of the Regionals. In a hotly disputed contest, the Hawks jumped to an early lead that never exceeded 8 points. The Gauchos rallied several times, including a furious rally at the end but the determined Hawks calmly kept the game in hand with outstanding defense inside and tremendous ball pressure on the perimeter. With blocked shots and pressure leading to turnovers, the Hawks were able to fastbreak on numerous occasions. The two teams went toe to toe after both competing in the Gym Rat Challenge in Albany, NY the day before. The Gauchos, after winning their pool, lost in the first round of the playoffs and the Hawks, upon winning their pool, proceeded through to the final, after 4 grueling games, including a double overtime win vs. the NJ Rap. The Hawks lost in the final of the Gym Rat Challenge to the Madison Ave. Broncos, by 2 points, terminating the game at approximately 11:00 p.m.
Congratulations to the Hawks for their win and congratulations to Richard Burke and the Gauchos for an outstanding tournament.'

5/29/01 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'Riverside Church won the Nike Memorial Day Classic championship 17 and under division with a hard fought 63-62 win over Boo Williams. Riverside began the tournament with a 68-60 victory over Team Memphis. The Church was led by Keydren Clark 13pts Ryan Williams 9pts and Bobby Santiago and Ricky Soliver with 8 pts each. The next game was against Howard Pulley and the Church won 84-73. Once again Keydren Clark led the way with 19pts Bobby added 13pts Ricky 12pts Willie Irick 11pts Shakiem Mitchell 11pts and Jason Wingate added 10pts. The last pool game was versus Team Florida and Riverside after trailing by 11 points in the 2nd half rallied to a 72-67 win. Kiki played a incredible hitting 7 threes going for 28pts Jason 13pts and Ricky 12pts headed the comeback. Kiki led our pool in scoring with a 21.3 avg. and did this coming off the bench. Our first playoff game was a 71-49 rout of Albany City Rocks. Kiki led the way with 14pts Ryan and Ricky 12 each and Jason added 11. The quarter-finals was against the Famlily (Detroit) and the Church had to rally from 4 points down with 50 seconds to go to win in OT 66-56. Ricky came up big with 24 pts and 9 boards Bobby added 14 and Jason had 12pts and 9 boards aslo. The game turned with a steal and layup by Ricky followed with a tough layin by Jason to tie the game. With the score tied Jason missed a free throw and Ricky tapped in the miss but the Famlily tied it. Riverside scored off the tap and never were headed again to gain the victory. The final four game was against Emerald City from Seattle and the Church raced out to a 49-19 halftime lead and cruised to a 82-66 win. Jason led the way with 16pts and 8 assists Willie Irick 11pts 8 boards Ryan 10pts 10 boards and Bobby added 10 Shakiem Mitchell had 12 rebounds.
The Chip was a great game we got out to a 40-30 lead at the half. Boo Williams came back by going inside to 6"10 Elton Brown and the penetration of John Gilchrist.Once again we were down 4 points with under a minute to go.We set up our black press, Ricky stole the ball and layed it in to cut the lead to 2. On the ensuing inbounds we got a steal and Jason made a daring drive and score over Elton Brown to tie the game. However John Gilchrist answered with a tough and one drive of his own to put them up 3 with 40 seconds to go. We went inside to Ryan for a power layup to cut the lead to 1. They called a timeout and we set up a halfcourt trap which led to Kiki stealing the ball he drove and missed the layup but Ricky tapped the ball in after missing two taps at it. Up 1 with 25 seconds left we made a defensive error by not getting back they threw a long pass to Elton Brown who was all alone for a dunk to put them back up 1 with 20 seconds to go. We pushed the ball up and went inside to Ryan who had his shot blocked out of bounds. With 11 seconds left we inbounded to Ryan who passed out to Kiki for an isolation move. Kiki made a spin move stopped up faked and went under his man for the jumper to put us up one with 4 seconds to go. They made it scary by hitting John Gilchrist for a long three that went in and out and we had won a hard fought Champoinship game. The Riverside palyers really stepped thier games up to win this tourney. Kiki led us in scoring with a 15pts avg Ricky 14 avg Ryan, Jason and Bobby averaged 10 each. Shaq averaged 8 boards. Without a domintant big guy our 4's by committee of Shamar Green, Eric Martin and Willie Irick all contributed to winning games. Shamar averaged 3 blocks a game in the playoffs. Eric playing with back spasms came into the Famlily game when Ryan got into foul trouble and held it down. Willie averaged 7 pts a game. Alonzo Brown gave a steady defensive effort and hit some clutch shots in his minutes. A total team effort is needed to win tournaments when the games are all in three days (7 total games). The Church wins their first major of the 2001 AAU season.'
5/29/01 All Star Report: Riverside Church Wins Nike Memorial Day Challenge. And TOC Recap, Notes.
5/28/01 Glen Steinberg: 'Just got back from watching a few of my players play with the Gauchos in the 8th grade championship game for Regionals. Figured I'd report on the three games I saw. The seventh grade Gauchos won 67-47 vs. the LI Lightning. The 8th grade Gauchos won 65-58 vs. the Staten Island Lightning. The 9th grade Gauchos won 78-56 vs. the LI Lightning, a game in which Ronald Ramon was unstoppable.'
5/28/01 T-bone: 'for 2004, I got the chance to see "Yadda" Gaines and Russel Robinson up close and personal at the Gym Rat Challenge as the Skyliners played the Gauchos.. and both of these players are talented,,, I mean Talented! .. poise, smarts, outside shooting, getting to the hole..etc..etc... they got game.'
5/28/01 I'm hoping to have the player profiles for the class of 2002, 2003 and 2004 redone before the Rumble in mid-June. I need help. Send two or three sentences on any player you wish to nycnjhoops@aol.com and I'll try to use it. These three profiles are what I'd like to see for each player:
John P Miciotta on Francisco Garcia -- 'a 6'6" forward from the Bronx playing at Cheshire Academy after transferring. He is a classic small forward who likes tho work the baseline and has range out beyond the three point line. A long first step and long arms make him a good finisher at the rim although he's not strong. Also not the quickest guy latterally but long arms and good hands make him an outstanding help defender. He'll draw attention from high majors as well as A-10 progrms.'
Prep Stars Rob Harrington on Jason Fraser: 'Uncommonly talented shot-blocker for a man his size, excellent timing and defensive instincts, aggressive rebounder and overall post presence, quick off the floor, very limited offensively, needs more seasoning to play away from post.'
Blue Ribbon on Lenny Cooke -- 'Cooke is a relentless scorer. He's not a great shooter or a mad handler with a thousand moves. But he is driven to score and can take it to the rim repeatedly along with hitting enough shots to make him a defender's nightmare. He knows how to get his shot and his upper body strength helps him finish. He's also not too proud to get his nose dirty around the basket and collect the garbage points.'
5/28/01 Coach Willie Negron: 'Tom Fleming's Peak 5 Millenium Shootout @ Yale University - 84 teams for 14u, 15u, 16u & 17u scheduled for the June 8-10 weekend. Willie Howe All Stars, Long Island Lightning, Madison Broncos, WCGA Wildcats, Riverside Church, LI Hurricane and Gauchos will be there.

5/28/01 Will Hurd: 'Gym Rat Challenge-Gauchos -- Congratulations to Marc Jones and the 15u group in winning the chamionship game over a very game Riverside Church team. In the end, Russell Robinson, Sundiata Gaines and Ronald Roman, were too much for the church guards and big guys. In addition, the Gauchos received strong support from Abdoule, Maurice and Brian. Great Job! The 16's batttled a strong Syracuse team, however Dwayne Mitchell's group came up short by a couple of points in the chamionship game. The same Syracuse team defeated the Riverside 16's in the quarterfinal's. The 17's led by Rich Burks were missing Shagari Alleyene and Marvin McCullough and Shaun Wynn (injury), however they played well enough to win the pool, but were upset in the championship round. Bigger and Better things are down the road. All of the Gaucho teams that played in the local AAU regional tournament will be playing in the championship games on Monday the 28th, at Island Garden in West Hempstead.'
5/28/01 BERASM: 'Harlem Lions @ Gymrat -- The Harlem Lions 17U team finished 2-1 in pool play. Lost first game to NJ RAP, 68-49. The trio guard tandem of Malik Brown, Jahkeem Washington and Tahan Engram combined for 28 pts and 7 asst. Wendell Gibson led all scorers with 13 pts and 12 rebs. In the second game, they beat the Titans of Elmira, 64-30 behind the scoring of Wendell Gibson and Laurence Smith who combined for 29 pts and 26 rebs. The trio tandem guards of Malik Brown, Jahkeem Washington and Tahan Engram combined for 27 pts and 18 asst. In the third game, they beat the Spirits of Utica, 74-47, behind the scoring of Wendell Gibson, 22pts, 16rebs and Jahkeem Washington 16pts and 8 ast. Laurence Smith and Tahan Engram played very good defense helping the Lions score 40pts off of Spirits' 23 turnovers. Overall, the Lions played very well rebounding from the first game loss.'
5/27/01 NJNYHoopWatcher: 'Gauchos 16's start off 2-0 at Gym Rat -- The Gauchos 16's ended the first day of competition 2-0 with a 70 - 37 win over CT Starters. Marlon Smith and Joe Sandberg scored 17 a piece to lead all scorers. The second game was not much different as the Gauchos ran away with a 74- 36 victory over the Clifton Park Clippers. Alex Buzbee scored 20 points and Marlon Smith scored 18 for the winners.'

5/26/01 Rich Kosik -BooksNBall: 'A great man died last night. Arthur "Chick" Sherrer, founder of the original Athletes for Better Education (AFBE) died suddenly from a heart attack last night at his home in Jacksonville, Florida. Chick was a graduate of Princeton University (1967) where he was a teammate of Bill Bradley. An English Professor at Northwestern University and co-author of Baron's Review Testbook for the Advanced English Placement Exam (1980's edition) .Chick ran a summer program for the NBA in Chicago in 1974 and out of that he came up with the idea of making academics a part of a basketball camp for Chicago student athletes. AFBE started in 1976 and out of that program came players like Isaiah Thomas, Terry Cummings, Darrell Walker, Mark Aguirre, Glenn "Doc" Rivers, Effrem Winters, Craig Robinson, Nick Anderson and many more. The program became co-sponsored by the NBA Player's Association in 1980 and with the help of a grant from the United States Department of labor (Youth Programs) expanded to Los Angeles in 1980 and to New York City in the summer of 1981. That first group of AFBE NY/NJ Players included the following: Dave Rivers, Walter Berry, Pearl Washington, Mark Jackson, Gary Voce, John Johnson, Don Marbury, John Salley, Greg Pedro, Kenny Smith, Andre Ervin, Bruce Lefkowitz, Todd Scott, Chuck Everson, Gregg Wilde, Olden Polynice. . The coaching staff included Tony Fiorentino (Mt. Vernon), Steve Lappas (Truman), Jim Gatto (then Mater Christi), Steve Post (Stevenson) and Bob Hurley (St. Anthony's). The AFBE camp was nine days long, the student-athletes went to classes from 8a.m. to 12 noon. had a guest speaker at 1 p.m. , stations and games in the afternoon. Counselling session at 6 p.m. and then games in the evening. Compared with today's 5 day camps and only 3 hours of classes of each day. Out of the AFBE program came the original AFBE/Nike All America camp in 1982 held at Princeton University. That summer AFBE sponsored nine day camps in NY, Chicago and Los Angeles in addition to the All America Camp. Money was never charged to the participants and AFBE continued during the school year with weekend counselling seminars and it's famed "Profile scrimmages" which gave colleges a last look at seniors after the completion of their high school season. At the 1982 scrimmages 234 student athletes particpated in three days of scrimmages at Manhattan College. At the completion of the scrimmages 188 of the student athletes had colleges interested in them (Div. I, II & III or J.C.s) and the financial aide generated was in the area of 1.5 million dollars.
Reaganomics and fierce competition for corporate donations in the early 80's brought on the demise of the local AFBE programs. Nike carries on to this day and adidas started in 1991 the All America Camps which Chick had so much to do with. In recent years Chick married, moved to Jacksonville, Fl. became the president of the Chamber of Commerce, was the President of "TouchDown Jacksonville", the civic association that got the NFL to reward a franchise to Jacksonville, now know as the Jaguars. At his death he was the President of Tectonics International, which produced high speed construction systems for both the United States and countries throughout the world. He is survivied by his wife Linda and daughters Christy and Kim. A great friend, mentor and man died last night and he will be missed.
Thanks for all the inspiration Chick.'
5/25/01 Brooklyn Scout: 'NYC JUCO News Signing Update -- The NCAA spring signing period ended last week and two more junior college hoopsters from the New York area recently announced their college intentions for the 2001-02 campaign.
Bronski Dockery, a 6-2 guard who was a member of two high school state championship teams at Rice HS, signed with St. Francis (NY). Dockery was named to the first team All-Conference.

5/25/01 Durham, N.C. (AP) - Freshman forward Andre Sweet, who was suspended indefinitely last season for academic reasons, has decided to leave Duke, the school said Thursday. Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski suspended Sweet in December, saying he would reevaluate his status at mid-semester. He was allowed to practice with the team, but not travel or participate in games. The 6-foot-6, 203-pound Sweet averaged 4.1 points and 2.6 rebounds in seven games for the national champions.

5/22/01 sparkle_s1@email.msn.com: 'would it be too hard to write that the NY Gauchos have a team in every age group final of the NYC AAU regional playoffs, and that our 16 year old playing without Marlon Smith in the line up beat a very good Washington Heights Warriors team while playing in the 17 year old tourney....'

5/21/01 MetroHoops: Luol Deng -- Sophomore of the Year.
5/21/01 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'Hats off to the SONDAY Express for their victory over Riverside in the IS 8 championship. They continually hit big shots and made us work hard for offense. We made a big run and once they got the lead back we missed the shots we had to make. Rashad Bell, Japhete McNiel and Marlon Smith played great. Rob Barrett was a monster on the boards and Yadda made a huge and one. I however really felt my seniors did a great job. Everyone who watched us during the regular season felt we were no threat. But to their credit once we got into the playoffs they raised their level of play. Wendell is a warrior even in defeat he posted 18 pts and 21 boards, Tyquawn showed why he was all city by making huge shots and feeding his teammates. Teddy supplied leadership even though his shot was off on Sunday. Sean and Eric gave me their all but it was just short. Congratulations to them for making my last IS 8 tourney with them one I won't forget. The Church will be back for the Tip Off looking to win it all!'
5/21/01 Coach Kevin Pigott: 'Regis High School had a coaching change recently and there was no publicity about it. Dr. Mike Mincieli resigned after being the head coach for the past 22 years. Dr. Mincieli had a record of 316 and 172 including two CHSAA "C" championships and one Federation "C" crown. This past year Regis was 22 and 3 and lost in the city finals.
Since the birth of the CHSAA "C" league, Regis has been always one of the top teams. Not many basketball programs can match this consistency. Besides his on-court success, Coach Mincieli was always a gentleman. His emphasis on academics is reflected by his players.
It is a shame that this "passing of the guard" went unnoticed. Dr. Mincieli has been one of the great coaches to come out of the CHSAA. He will be succeeded by long-time assistant Kevin Cullen.'
5/21/01 Ststjj: 'Westchester Hawks 17 under boys team does it again. Second year in a row. Upstate all we hear about is this player is all this and this other player is all that. Then we come downstate to the regionals and qualify in the nyc region and nobody knows (or talks) about us. We are in the finals 2 years running after beating the Jaguars for the third straight time (with all the studs that we read about all the time) Go figure. Hey we got some players too. By the way our 15 yr olds qualified as did our 12 yr olds. And we ain`t done yet!'
5/21/01 Kbhjr14: 'The NYC Jaguars qualified for the National AAU tournament again for the 5th time out of 5 years since the program started. As the LI SCOUT said the Jaguars got off to a poor start losing to the Lightning Gold team by 4. Sometimes these things happen for a reason and it helps to get focus back. Focus we did and began to earn respect back. Jaguars beat a tough Newburgh team by 24+ points. Kevin Hamilton's first game back from injury he scored 23 points to lead the Jaguars. Tim Doyle, Brian Houlihan and Jamaal Wagner held it down each with over 12pts. Orange County was next with the Jaguars winning by 30+. Big plays were made by all with outstanding performances coming from Stephon Cherry, Tarik Viaer-McClymont, Tim Doyle and Kevin Diffley. Game three was a team that played great in the tournament the Albany City Rocks. The Jaguars played well and won by 30+ points. Paul Tuomey hit 5 three pointers and finished with 22pts. Kevin Diffley played outstanding with two big time dunks and finished with 20pts. Next up was the St. Paul's Crusaders. Jaguars won by 5 in overtime. This game our second of the day was very tough but we hung on. Tim Doyle and Jamaal Wagner led the team with each scoring 15 pts. Kevin Hamilton hit 6 big free throws to seal the victory. Doyle made some spectacular passes in this game. Jamaal Wagner held down the tough guards on St. Pauls. Last game against the Westchester Hawks was a game with controversy from the beginning. Each team played hard and Westchester won by four. More to follow on this game later! Due to injuries Kevin Hamilton & Miguel Gonzalez didn't play in the game. The members of the Jaguars are Kevin Hamilton, Miguel Gonzalez, Tim Doyle, Kevin Diffley, Jamaal Wagner, Stephon Cherry, Brian Houlihan, Tarik Viaer-McClymont, Devon Powell, Woody Aime and Paul Tuomey. 5/20/01 BklynAllStarsAAU: 'Over the weekend, the Brooklyn All-Stars had a favorable showing in the 17U Regional Championships held at Island Garden. The team, however, did not have a favorable pool, which included the #1 seeded Gauchos, but did go 2-1 in pool play to advance to the playoff round. In the opener, a balanced attack by Will Kuntz (11 pts), Ryan Johnson (11 pts), Ricardo Matteis (12 pts), and Antonio Taylor (12 pts) helped BAS hold off LI Lightning (McCoy) by a score of 57-52. An hour later, the team took the court again against the up-tempo Bi-State Pythons and came away with a 77-60 victory. Ryan Johnson led all scorers with 22 points. Donald Brown, who was plagued by foul trouble in game #1, rebounded with 19 points, and Antonio Taylor added 14 Ed Washington and Tim Sela did a great job handling the ball at the PG position for BAS. In game #3, a four-hour layoff and a size disadvantage were too much for BAS as they fell to the Gauchos, 69-35. Chris Fritch played well for the All-Stars in the losing effort.
In Sunday's playoff action, BAS took on a tough and quick LI Roadrunners (Fields) team, but were unale to keep up with their up-tempo style, as the Roadunners came away with a 107-68 win. Ed Washington (24 pts) played all 32 minutes in a valiant effort for BAS, as did Kofi-Asiedu Stewart (10 pts). The team will next compete in the LI Lightning Invitational on June 8 - 10.'
5/20/01 Peter Benoit: 'The IS8 Spring Classic concluded today with SONDAY Express defating Riverside Church A, 78-66. Julius Hodge was not in action but the Express did not need him. Rob Barrett played big the entire Final 4 weekend for the Express. He took home the MVP for the playoffs. His supporting cast of Rashad Bell, Yadda Gaines (Rookie of the Year), Marlon Smith and Japhet McNeil were too much for the Church. Wendell Gibson did his best for the Church he had at least 21 rebounds. Tyquawn Goode and Sean Danztler kept the Church in the game with outside shooting.' More on the IS8 Spring Classic 2001 page.

5/20/01 Nathan Blue: As you may know S.o.n.d.a.y Express vs Riverside Church (A) final is at 11am. This is gonna be a good game. Many people are still sleeping on the Riverside Church. I learned last year the hard way. Most people don't think the game will be good. But I'll tell you this...... Kenny Pretlow never goes down without a fight. Never. This is gonna be a great game. Hope to see you there!'
5/20/01 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'Riverside Church today won three of the six Citywide championships played today. The Super Biddies defeated the Guachos in overtime as Dorval Carter copped game MVP, and Leonard McNiel was named tourney MVP. The Riverside Midget A team defeated the Riverside Midget C team as Tyrell Biggs was named MVP and Codi Oliver copped Sportsmanship. The Juniors defeated the Guachos 54-52 as Kevin Johnson hit 27pts. to win MVP. This was the juniors third straight tournament title this fall (IS 8 and Pro Style). The Seniors lost to Kips Bay as Shaeen McNair copped the sportmanship award. Also the Riverside A team advanced to the championship game of IS 8 vs. the SONDAY Express. Riverside defeated the Brooklyn Bridge in OT. The Church was down ten points with three minutes to go before a full court press yeilded turnovers that allow the Church to send the game to overtime. Sean Dantzler led the way with 27 pts that included a and one three that started the comeback. Tyquawn Goode hit 24pts with five threes as the Bridge dared him to shoot, he kept us in the game and hit a double pump scoop shot to ice the game in OT. Eric Sterling added 22 with 16 of those coming in the 4th quarter and OT. Wendell Gibson added 18 pts and 15 boards. This is ninth championship appearance in the past ten IS 8 tournaments for the Church with the high competition level at the 8,this a great accomplishment.'
5/20/01 Keith Mason: 'At the Brooklyn USA vs. Tim Thomas Playaz Challenge, USA took 4 of the 5 games. The lone loss was when USA's 9th graders played against Tim Thomas's 10th graders because the 10th graders had yet to return from the AAU Regionals. The score of the 7th grade game was 48-42, the 8th grade game was 57-31, the 9th grade game was 70-49, all in favor of the kids from Brooklyn. In Tim Thomas's win they recorded the biggest blowout of the day with an 89-49 win. The 11th grade game was a goodie with USA pulling it out in the end 71-63. I will have a full report of the event after the IS8 championship which I will be attending.'.
5/20/01 Brooklyn Scout: 'Brooklyn USA defeated Tim Thomas Playaz' in four of the five class games in the Brooklyn-New Jersey Challenge at Xaverian H.S. on May 19. In the feature game matching the junior squads, Brooklyn USA prevailed 71-65 behind Quincy Douby (four threes and 21 points), Chris Taft (17 points, 9 rebounds) and Gary Ervin (11 points). TTP was led by Elijah Ingram (14 points), while Dwayne Lee added 12 and Jamar Nutter 11. The game was close throughout until Brooklyn USA pulled ahead 63-54 with under three minutes remaining. TTP's Lee then connected on three successive treys and suddenly the gap was narrowed to 65-63 with under a minute left. But Jerel Blassingame and Ervin converted six consecutive free throws down the stretch to preserve the Brooklyn USA win.
The Challenge began with Brooklyn winning the first three contests before the Playaz secured their only win in the sophomore game. In the 7th grade game the Playaz took a 17-16 halftime lead before Brooklyn USA took control in the third quarter and posted a 48-42 victory. Willie Etheridge scored 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half to lead the comeback. Michael Shine contributed 9 points for Brooklyn while Lamar Pannell topped the Playaz with 13.
Brooklyn USA raced to a 25-8 halftime lead in the 8th grade contest, en route to a 57-31 triumph. Saiquon Stone canned a pair of treys to lead a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. Derick Echols added 11 points for Brooklyn USA while Kit Onell led TTP with 8.
Brooklyn USA had another strong start in the freshman game, leading 36-18 at the half and coasting to a 70-49 win. Robert Thomas and Carlos Collazo each tallied 12 points to lead the winners while Terrance Portis had 10 and ten other players made the Brooklyn USA scoring column. Andrew Pusar took game-high honors for TTP with 15 and Joe Dyson was next with 10.
In their sole win in the sophomore game, the Playaz received 22 points apiece from Sean Banks and Jamal Warren and another 19 from Ara Bowen. Brooklyn USA, which used mostly ninth-graders since their sophs were competing in the AAU Regionals, was led by freshman Carlos Collazo with 15.
Among the scouts in attendance were Mike Sullivan (Alliance Sports - Insiders Report), Keith Mason (The Apple's Best HS Ballaz), John Miciotta (NY/NJ Hoops) and official statistician Burt Beagle.

5/19/01 Peter Benoit: 'Down to 2 -- In today's Final 4 action @ IS8. Riverside A defeated Brooklyn Bridge in an overtime affair. The Church came back from a 10 point deficit with 2 minutes left in regulation. Tyquan Goode led Riverside with 27 points. Eric Sterling and Sean Danztler also had 20 + points, while Wendell Gibson had 18. Sebastian Telfair led the Bridge's offensive attack. However Eric Sterling and Tyquan Goode defended the star freshman very well. The inability to handle the pressure defense of The Church led the comeback that forced the extra session. Riverside's defense in the overtime led to easy offense and a win. In the second game SONDAY Express crushed JYO, 90-67 without Julius Hodge. Deshawn Warren paced the Express with 5 first half three pointers. Jaffete McNeil also hit most of his open shots. Yadda Gaines had a great offensive game for the Express but their star today was Rob Barrett. He controlled the game at both ends rebounding at will and scoring down low. This leads to an exciting final. Wendell Gibson vs Rob Barrett is a matchup to watch. The final is tomorrow at 11 am.'
5/19/01 LI SCOUT1: 'On the advice of Real Scout Ben Cook, I ventured down to Long Island's very own Island Garden to catch a little bit of the NY Metro 17U Reginals. The gem of the night featured two of NY's best in a classic pool play match. The NYC Jaguars met the LI Lightning Gold in what will probably be considered the pool play matchup of the tourney. At the end in was LI Lightning Gold pulling out a 63-59 comeback win that even had MSG High School Weekly Host Tom Konchalski shaking his head. In holding supposed 2002 powerhouses' Tim Doyle, Jammal Wagner and Tariq Viar-Mclymont to a mere 12 points respectively, the LI Lightning got the W. Using a good mix of guard play, low post presence and a couple of clutch 3's down the stretch from Archbishop Molloy standout Leonzo Cuiman to seal the win, the LI Lightning Gold proved once again that they are the Real Deal.'

Neither game was as close as the score the Gauchos were in complete control from start to finish and were up by as many as 30 against the Rifles and 28 against the Minute Man Press.'
5/7/01 Steve Finamore checking in from Ft. Wayne Indiana at the 2001 Spiece Run 'N Slam: I watched the Jersey City Heat in action twice and I came away impressed with 6-5 junior to be Mel Drummond, from Piscataway. This kid is a horse. He dominated on the inside throughout both games. Everytime he received the ball down on the block he took it to the hole with some outstanding power moves. The Indiana team could not handle him. He has a great body and best of all, I loved his attitude. He played hard on both ends of the floor. It was too bad the Indiana officials had to make a few questionable calls on him, which led to him fouling out. (Those calls would of never been made on the east coast). Coach Isaac Ford kept shouting out to his point guard, "ride your horse...ride your horse" (get the ball to Drummond). This kid is going to be something special in the future.
I also liked their point guard, Devon Standberry from St. Mary's HS. He too is a junior to be.'

5/6/01 Abdu-Allah Torrence: 'The Washington Hts. Warriors 16 unders have ended pool play with a 3-0 record and are heading into the playoffs Sunday at Island Garden.
The first game was played at Island Garden Friday@ 6pm vs. the New York Minutemen Press. The team featured a 6'9, 6'7 and 6'6 frontline, but Warriors with their quickness and aggressive play were able to negate the height factor. The team was lead by Amaurys Quezada 21 points, 5 steals and 4 assists, Junior Bernal 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals, and Saliym Wilson 11 points and 4 rebounds. Jason Romer and James Dorismond came off the bench and provided a defensive spark off the bench. Rashiem Donaldson held his own against the tall front line and brought down 9 rebounds. The final score was 76-64.
The second game was vs. the Long Island Lightning (Fenton) Team on Saturday. This Lightning team was tough in the beginning with the Warriors only leading by four at halftime; the three point shooting was exceptional to say the least. As we stretched the lead to 18 the Lightning made a last minute comeback but we were able to hold on to win by 13. The leaders of this were Amaurys Quezada 29 points 6 assists, Cyrone Lee 19 points, and Junior Bernal with 15 points 6 rebounds.
The third game and second game of the day was played against the Bronx Gauchos (J2) at Elmcor. This was a big test for the Warriors after playing earlier in the day it will tell if we had anymore juice in our engines to compete with the highly athletic Bronx team. As the game went on it remained close with the Warriors making a run and the Gauchos closing the lead. This was a defensively dominated game in which Steve Robinson (8 points) came off the bench played a big role in handling the pressure, rebounding (team leading 6 rebounds) and team leading 4 steals. Junior Bernal led the team in scoring with 15 points followed by Amaurys Quezada 13 points. With two our big men taking the SAT it was essential we stayed out of foul trouble but unfortunately that was not the case. Peter Gonzalez came off the bench and played some big minutes he scored four points but most importantly he played good man to man defense.
1st round playoffs Sunday @ 11:30 am stay tuned.'

We have a three week break and then will be bringing a team to Connecticut, Philadelphia and Virginia in June.'

5/5/01 Brooklyn Scout: 'Bronski Dockery, a strong 6-2 guard who averaged 16.5 ppg. at Tallahassee (FL) this season, has signed with St. Francis (NY) and coach Ron Ganulin for the 2001-02 season.
Despite missing six weeks with a thumb injury, Dockery was the second-leading scorer for the 29-2 Eagles and was named to the All-Panhandle Conference team. Tallahassee, coached by Mike Gillespie, won the conference title and finished the regular season ranked #2 in the country by the NJCAA.
An agressive defender, Bronski formed a solid TCC backcourt with high-scoring All-American Marcus Hatten (24.1 ppg.), who will be coming to New York to play at St. John's next fall.
Bronski played his high school ball at Rice (NY), where he was a member of two state championship teams in 1997 and 1998 under coach Mo Hicks.'

Jimmy Herold added 8pts and Mike Nalaskowski did a great job handling the tough Gaucho press. Bayo Dibassy played a solid all around game for the Lightning.
