June, 2001

6/30/01  SONDAY Expess forfeited the first IS8 biddy game to 1st Presbyterian this morning .  It's their second forfeit and according to Pete Edwards they are now out of the league. More on the IS8 Summer 2001 page.

The forfeit can't be blamed on coach Doug Jones - I ran into him at Horace Harding Park getting ready to coach the 15u SONDAY Express team at Brooklyn, Queens CityWide.  Doug reminded me that tomorrow is SONDAY Express Sunday at UDC with all five division teams (super biddy, biddy, midget, junior and senior) playing between 11:30 and 2:30.  I didn't make it to UDC today but the schedule is updated on the UDC 2001 page and I will be there tomorrow.

As for CityWide, both Brooklyn, Queens @ Horace Harding and Manhattan, Bronx @ Crack is Wack, the schedules are not yet ready - they'll be available next weekend.  --  Yeah, right, whatever.

Web note:  If the RimRockers' Louis Xifaras were running CityWide, I'd be golden.  Failing that, if someone has a positive suggestion about relating to the people running this important NYC tournament please send mail to nycnjhoops@aol.com. Meanwhile, I'll keep trekking to each park and be grateful that CityWide administrators owe me schedules and information, not money.

6/30/01  BlueChipHoops.com: Providence In Good Shape -- Donnie McGrath Commitment Important.

6/30/01 Steve Finamore:  'Second night of the 16 and Under AAU Nationals in Detroit and I was able to watch the Gauchos. I was very impressed with Marlon Smith. He is everything they say and more.

The Gauchos hammered a team from Jackson, MS. 85-62.

Smith has an explosive first step off the dribble that could not be stopped all night long. The Mississippi team tried everyone on defense to try and check Smith. He ended the night with 21 points on a variety of lay-ups and a few outside jumpers. he could of scored 30 but he spent a lot of time on the bench due to the blowout.

He had the move of the night when he demonstrated a sweet inside-out dribble that froze his defender and took it right to the goal for a lay-up. He told me after the game he is heading to the Nike Camp in Indy. (With his shaved head, I thought he looked like Stephon Marbury)

Other standouts for the Gauchos were Joe Sandberg ( This kid can do it all. I love his defense on the ball) from New Jersey, Chris Bernard from Brooklyn, John Paliogiannis, George Skrelja, Alex Buzbee, and Adrian Joseph.

The Gauchos are in a tough bracket beginning tomorrow night. They may wind up facing BABC for the right to advance. But with their talented guards in Smith, Sandberg and Bernard, they should be alright.

If they advance, they may have to face the Houston Hoops who have two 6-11 guys in their lineup. I don't think the Gauchos have a guy over 6-4?

But the assistant coach for the Gauchos told me they beat the Hoops last year.  I'm rooting for the Gauchos!'

6/29/01 Dafuture27:  'I'm trying to start a free access ranking site to give an idea of the top players in the city.'

6/29/01 Matt Grasso on Donnie McGrath and other Westchester news.

6/29/00 Bob Lucas: 'Just wanted to mention a few players from Bergen County New Jersey who have been making some noise in the area and on the AAU circuit.  They are members of the Bergen Flash AAU team who placed second in the NJ AAU tournament, losing to the Newark Rams in the finals.

They will be competing in the nationals in Orlando at the end of July: Jim Holsworth (Jr.) 5'-10" G. Bogota High School (Second team All-County).  Matt Henry (Jr.) 6'-0" G. Cresskill High School (First team All-County). Nolan Leonard (Jr.) 6'-2" G. Pascack Hills High School First team All-County) Montvale, NJ.  Naim Benjamin (Jr.) 6'-2 F. Kennedy (Paterson NJ)  All-Passiac County.'

6/29/00 BlueChipHoops.com:  Lenny Cooke's Thoughts On The Draft

6/29/00 Peter Abraham, The Journal News -- Donnie McGrath to Providence.

6/29/01 Steve Finamore:  'I went to the opening night for the 16 and Under AAU Nationals and I watched the Newark Ram Athletic Program play one of the best teams in Michigan, The Family. It was a game that saw the lead change hands many times. The Family jumped out to a 12 point lead in the first half but the Newark Ram fought back and was able to take a 6 point lead in the fourth quarter.

Mike Nardi (St. Patrick's) led the way Newark and did all he could to help his team but they fell short in the closing seconds losing 82-80. The Family put on a very tough full-court trap and that the Newark team could not handle. Nardi is a big time player who can score any time he wants. He dazzled the crowd with some sweet moves going to the basket and he also displayed his long range jump shot. I love the kid's enthusiasm and his energy. He plays like he downed a bottle of Ginseng before the game. On a couple of big plays down the stretch, I was sitting under Newark's basket and Nardi got hammered but the zebra's elected not to call anything.

Kevin Boyle has a great player in Nardi. Tony Wilson also played well for Newark. I spoke with Nardi after the game and he told me he was going to ABCD, not Nike. I will try and keep you up to date on other NY-NJ teams in the tournament.'

6/28/01 Adrian Armstrong:  Last weekend's results on the UDC 2001 page.

His Clinton team finished the year with a 20-8 record. DaMarr averaged 13 pts and 8 boards a game Clinton.

6/25/01 Glenn L. Bynes:  'It's been said that if you want to get better you have to play against some of the better players or better teams. Well, that is what the NJ Jammers did yesterday at the UDC in the Bronx. The NJ Jammers who are made up of mostly freshman and sophomores played against a solid Brooklyn Beast team which is "blessed" to have part of the St. Anthony's Friars TOC squad from Jersey City, NJ. The Jammers weren't able to handle the pressure in the first half but managed to play well in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The Jammers were down by as much as 25 points during the game at 42-17 lost super sophomore guard Marvin Taylor in the 3rd quarter to foul trouble, but they never gave up, losing by just 9.'

Web note: Many AOL problems.  Customer service and I are trying to fix them.

6/12/01 Keith Mason:  'My site The Apple's Best Ballaz, will have no updates for a while until I change the site over to FrontPage. Until then I will be sending all my updates here to High Hoops. I am in the process of updating my class of 2002 rankings. Allan Ray will be moved up to #2 and Jason Wingate will moved up to the 10-12 range. Bobby Santiago will be dropping because of his lackluster perfomrances in his IS8 playoff, the Nike Memorial Challenge and last Thursday against the Brooklyn Bridge. But that could all change after this weekend's Rumble in the Bronx.'

6/12/01 Brooklyn Scout: 'In late NCAA signing news, Raymond Abellard, a 5-11 point guard from Pensacola (FL), has signed with Central Florida for the 2001-02 season.  Abellard, a graduate of Erasmus HS in Brooklyn, received first team honors in Florida's Panhandle Conference last winter.

Clarence Baker, a 5-8 point guard from Teaneck HS (NJ) who played the last two seasons at Kankakee (IL), inked with Mercer. Baker averaged 10.4 points and 7.3 assists in 2000-01, a year after guiding the Cavaliers to the NJCAA Final Four at the National Tournament in Hutchinson (KS).

Also, Sherlan Griffith, a 6-9 forward who played one year at Globe Tech, has signed with Kentucky State.

In incoming JUCO signings: Darren Sykes, a 6-2 shooting guard from New Utrecht HS, has signed with Westchester (NY). . . Kirk Spencer, a 6-2 swingman from Erasmus HS, is headed to Neosho (KS). . . Terrance Watkins, a 6-4 guard from Loughlin HS, is reported to be transferring to Fashion Institute (NY) from Long Beach State.

6/12/01  Abdu-Allah Torrence:  'The Warriors 16 and under team went 4 and 1 this weekend in the Lehigh Valley Jam Fest. They lost their third pool game and went into the the 2nd place bracket. They were lead in scoring by Emmanuel Quezada 27pts ppg and Darren Johnson 21 ppg and 13 rpg. We played with a few guys hurt and suspended so we were shorthanded this past weekend but we should be at full strength come "Rumble time". Let's get ready to rumble, y'all.'

6/10/01 Henry Lake -- www.kfan.com/lake103.html:  'Hello, My name is Henry Lake and I am a NBA and college basketball reporter for KFAN Sports Radio in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This time of year is when I go full steam ahead into covering college recruiting. I just wanted to let you know that I was very impressed this past weekend with this year's Tim Thomas Playaz teams. I saw both the 17 and under, and 16 and under teams for this year at the Howard Pulley Panthers Invitational here in Minneapolis. The Howard Pulley Panthers have been one of the better Nike teams in the last three years. Tim Thomas 17 and under team won the tournament defeating Howard Pulley in the semi-finals by six points, and the Illinois Warriors by three in the championship. Point guard Elijah Ingram was absolutely sensational and has been the basketball talk of the town since yesterday. In the semifinals and being down 14 points in the 3rd quarter, Ingram scored 17 straight points to bring the Playaz back. If you would like reports from time to time, e-mail me with a response. My e-mail address is Hlake@KFAN.com.'

6/9/01 School Sports:  Basketball Recruiting Buzz:  'Allen Ray enjoyed the trash-talking of Julius Hodge, his former teammate at St. Raymond’s High (N.Y.). He may be hearing it again after next season. Ray, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound combo guard, lit it up recently at the Tournament of Champions in North Carolina. He went up against Anthony Roberson and Sean Dockery — two of the top point guards in the nation — and more than held his own. He averaged 30 points per game, second only to North Carolina recruit Raymond Felton.'

6/9/01 LFBALL: 'Brooklyn Bridge Challenge Games on the Brooklyn Challenge, 2001 page.'

6/9/01 Nathan Blue:  'Sorry but Quincy Doubie isn't better then Curtis Stinson or Petey Nelson. Curt was avg 19ppg in Bob Gibbons and Petey (bad knee) is a better ball handler while Quincey is a better shooter. So that's a toss up. Oh yeah , if Stinson or Petey played for the Beast on Thursday insted of Doubie the Panthers would have got blown.'

6/9/01 Keith Mason:  'I have put a report of the Brooklyn Bridge Challenge on the Apple's Best High School Playaz' AAU reports page.'

6/8/01 Peter Benoit:  'In the first game at the Battle at the Bridge the Long Island Panthers defeated Brooklyn Beasts, behind Curtis Sumpter, Kendell Provet and Jason Fraser. The Beasts made a game of it cutting the lead to 2 with under a minute left. In the showcase game Riverside Church defeated Brooklyn Bridge with a total team effort. Jason Wingate was solid on the offensive end, Shakeem Mitchell played a great defensive game for the Church. The Bridge was led by Sebastian Telfair and Gary Ervin, but they couldn't get the lead under 6 in the fourth quarter.'

6/8/01 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'Riverside defeated the Brooklyn Bridge 78-68 at LIU yesterday. The Church jumped out to a 16 point lead and was never headed. Willie Irick led the way with 18 pts. and was named MVP. Ricky Soliver added 14 and Shamar Green and Shakiem Mitchell 8 each. Sebastian Telfair played a great game and Gary Irvin aslo added firepower to the Bridge attack. It was a good game for the Church as we head into the Rumble in the Bronx.'

6/7/01 Coach Kevin Pigott:  'Last year we ran our first overnight Five-Star for the younger guys (grades 5 through 9). It was an experiment that worked out quite well! We had a very talented group of kids who did a great job at stations. Many of these players were too young for the regular camp but still wanted the "Five-Star experience." They got it!

Recently I have fielded many inquiries about overnight camps. We have not done a great amount of "promo" in regards to our camp - but it would be well worth the experience for any younger player interested in learning the game.

The camp is run according to the traditional Five-Star format. Many of the coaches, including myself, are Five-Star veterans. The camp is located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which is about two hours driving time from New York City. There is a bus from White Plains and Albany Airport, which is included in the tuition. The camp site is at Camp Winadu in the Berkshire Mountains. It is a great location for a basketball camp. Cost is $400. The dates for the camp are August 17-22. For information, call the Five-Star office at (914) 237-1306 or myself at (718) 597-5278.'
