7/31/01 ALLMEAC3: ' I was at the Beast of the East tournament today at Fordham University and I thought the tournament was run very well. There was a mixture of coaches from D3 to D1. I showed up to watch some teams and they had dropped out at the last minute. One game suprised me a lot. The Brooklyn All Stars were playing Rise Above and Rise Above ended up pulling away by nine but the real story was the way #11 for Brooklyn All stars kept them in the game. His name is Rob Wiatre. At one point his team was down 15 in the second half and he hit back to back 3's from the 718 area code off the dribble followed by two drives. After this he penetrated and dished for 2 spectacular assists. He ended up with a game high 24 and some spectacular moves. I enjoyed watching him play and if he had 1 more good player around him they would have been able to pull off the upset. I hope to be back at Fordham to watch him play tomorrow.'

7/27/01 Midhudsonhoops: 'I would like to congartualate the Sullivan Eagles on making it to the national 17u tournament this week in Orlando Fla. I would like to mention two players from there team who are hard workers in the classrooms and the court. First is Jason Jones who attends Monroe-Woodbury High in Orange County NY. At 6'4 he plays the 2 guard spot and has a consistent jump shot but his defense needs a little work. He plays solid on the ball defense but he needs to be more on his team defensive skills. He has recieved letters from d2 and d3 schools but should recieve some letters from mid-major schools after he proves himself as one of the top 100 risisng seniors. His play reminds me of a guy in the league named Odom.. Dante Griggs a stocky 6'6 pf from Chester High in Orange County NY is also a legitimate D1 prospect but has not had the chance tpo showcase his game in front of " the right" crowd but should suprise alot of people once nationals is over. He has quick post up moves on the block and can beat his man off the dribble. However he needs to work on his jumpshot even though its "ok" but can be better from 10-15 ft. He plays solid defense but like all kids his age it could be improved. I will keep you posted on how they do during they stay in FLA.'

7/26/01 Coach Glen Steinberg: The Warriors 3-3 team won the regional qualifier in Pennsylavnia this past weekend, again securing a spot in the Nationals. 7/18/01 LOVE2REF4EVER: 'Giving all you got to make it to the next level. As an official working on and off the court to be the best that I can be is sometimes hard. I have to be knowledgeable of the rules, professional, physically fit, and hustle hard during the games. With all of this in mind I still may not always get the respect that I deserve, the assignment that I want, or make it to the next level. Officiating basketball is not an occupation; it is an avocation. The fee that I receive for games is sometimes low and the time spent away from family and loved ones is great. During the summer months if an official is trying to move up the ladder or is working on improving their skills there are camps that he or she may wish to attend. These camps are not vacations for officials just like they are not vacations for the players. The cost of some of these camps can start from $275.00 to $475.00 and according to where they are located this may require airfare. At these camps I get observed by clinicians and my games are videotaped and studied for improvement. When this summer is over I will have attended three officiating camps, and worked various High School Classics where there are no fees! Officials sometimes have to work games to establish good relations with College Assigners in the event that this is your goal. And let's not mention the summer tournaments that I officiate, Rucker, Citywide, UDC, Entertainers, Nike Swish, Each One-Teach One etc. So when you see me or my fellow officials out there busting our chops to control games and make sure that the rules are respected, don't just think we are a bunch of zebras with no life. Just tell yourself maybe he or she just "Loves To Ref."

Also the PSAL has released its 2001-2002 league schedule on their website and we have linked to it at www.psalhoops.com The new schedule features drastic realignment as 16 teams have been moved up from the PSAL B league into the A league. Queens A has changed from a 2 division borough back to its historic 3 division borough. (LIC, Flushing, T. Harris, John Adams, John Bowne & Aviation moved up) The Bronx A has added a second division as well (Bronx Science, & Alfred Smith have moved up) Neither Brooklyn (Automotive, Banneker, Grand St. Campus) or Manhattan (Thurgood Marshall, Brandeis, Stuyvesant, Comprehensive Model, Urban Peace & Hunter) have added any new divisions, but these teams have moved up.

All this should prove for quite an interesting upcoming year in PSAL hoops!'

Donnie averaged 12 points and 4.4 assists (tied for third in the camp) and shot 48 percent from the floor while playing for one of the least talented camp teams. He then scored eight points and had five assists in the all-star game and more than held his own. I don't see the point of tearing down a good player and a good kid. Just my opinion.'

First is 6'7 pf/c Ellis Coleman of New Paltz High, at 6'7 265 ( and growing 2-3inches left) he can shoot the three, rebound, and plays solid defense away and near the basket. He also has a variety of post moves that are efficient. His only weakness is foot speed which will improve as time goes on. In my eyes he has to be considered one of the top 100 rising seniors, but has not had the opportunity to showcase his skills like a lot of the other players from his class. He plays for the Sullivan Eagles AAU team which will be participating at the 17u nationals in FLA. He will be attending the 2nd week of eastern and the last week of five star.'

7/4/01 THREEDEE25:  'Just a reminder: The Monster Showcase is being run this weekend in Englewood, NJ at the Hoop Zone Complex. This event, which is being run by the people from 5-Star should be a great success. From what I understand a talented field of 80 players will participate in the event.

Also, in the Public-Catholic debate. I would like to add my 2 cents. It depends on the individual kid and the individual school. A motivated kid is a motivated no matter where he goes. Some kids need the structure. However, it is not fair to say that that structure comes from Catholic school. There are many fine public schools that provide structure and discipline. It also depends on the coach. If a kid has an opportunity to go to a school with a great coach who puts in the time, then he should attend. This is where caution from the parents comes to play. It just seems that there are certain schools year in and year out where kids frequently are either academically ineligible, don't meet college requirements, kids show poor sportsmanship on the floor, or transfer out to another school. Then on the other hand there are schools year in and year out where the majority of the kids make the honor roll, go on to college, etc.. and become future leaders and not just NBA basketball players.'

The Gauchos got off to a very slow start in the first quarter and found themselves trailing by eight after one period, and they never could get back into the game.  Stevie Heiley, William Blaylock and Justin Dick did the job on both ends of the floor for BABC in leading the Boston team to a 63-46 win.

Marlon Smith started the game ice cold from the field. Sandberg and Bernard also struggled with BABC's suffocating defense. Alex Buzbee had a fine game for the Gauchos scoring a ton of points in the paint. Adrian Joseph also played well to keep the Gauchos within striking distance but a 16-6 fourth quarter defecit erased any chance for the Gauchos to pull this one out.

See ya at ABCD next week.'

7/1/01 GRIP 21023:  'Today at Real Good I saw the SONDAY Express take on the Queens Rimrockers.  The game was close early on and the QRR were very impressive, the game was a nail biter.  At half SONDAY had a 5 pt lead.  The QRR came out with a new energy and a thirst for victory.  The fourth was "crunch time" both teams played hard the QRR seemed to enjoy being against the wall therefore the QRR just simply out rebounded SONDAY.  At the end qrr hit crucial "and1" shots and took the game.'

7/1/01 RICE41:  On Thursday, the Queens RimRockers made it to the semi-final game in the Bay Terrace Y.M.H.A. league. We beat a team that had guard Bryan Geffen (St. Francis Prep) on it. Danny Artest led RR with 30 points, and Wesley Walker (Newtown) ran the point well for RR. The semi-final and championship game is Friday. Good Luck to coach Jimmy as he tries to lead us to our 2nd championship. Good job by Larry Jackson on coordinating the league.'
