He will join 11th grader Ezaakk Diggs - both are from Harlem and play for Abyssinian. Ezaakk averaged 23.5 last year for Holderness in New England Class "B" basketball league.
... here is a name you will want to remember -- Jerril Lewis. He is a 10th grader at New Hampton school. He is from Brooklyn. He played for a NH AAU team this summer and at nationals St John's was asking about him.'

8/30/01 BklynAllStarsAAU: 'The Brooklyn All-Stars 17U White team have advanced to the finals of the Island Garden Summer League with a 65 - 52 victory over Massapequa on Wednesday night. Despite an 0-3 start to the league, BAS has won it's last nine games in a row, and is scheduled to face Holy Trinity on Thursday night in the 8:20 pm championship at Island Garden. Leading the way for BAS against Massapequa were Donald Brown (16 pts), Will Kuntz (12 pts), Ed "Junior" Washington (10 pts), and Ryan Johnson (10 pts) in a very balanced attack. Solid contributions from Antonio Taylor, Rich Cronin, and Chris Fritch, especially defensively, were also the keys to the All-Stars recent success.
Earlier this week, BAS needed to win its last two regular season games against the Bayhawks and Oceanside just to qualify for the playoffs, and responded with two convincing wins, including a 90 - 51 victory over Oceanside. In the quarterfinals, BAS held off a tough Lynbrook Celtics team by a score of 71 - 62. The return of slasher Ricardo Matteis, who spent the past week at Five-Star, for the championship game will give BAS an extra boost against Holy Trinity. The championship game on Thursday will cap off what has been a terrific summer for BAS, who also played in the St. Mary's (Manhasset) Summer League as well.'
8/29/01 Coach Glen Steinberg: 'The Warriors team played in the Nassau Colliseum Hoop-it-Up winning the whole thing again for our age division 14 and under. Mike Crisci, Wayman Efkiju, and 12 year old Pat Foley played. We went undefeated but didnt really play well until the playoffs where we won the semi's 16-1 and the finals 16-5. Also, "Any Question" apparel sponsored us with t-shirts for the team for all three days for the Nationals.'

8/29/01 David Agosto, assistant coach for the Washington Heights Warriors: 'Raymond Ozoria (SG,PG 5' 7), an up and coming sophomore for All Hallows High School in the Bronx is an all around built player. This kid has the foot speed, as strong as any guard in his class, has the jumper, can take it strong to the basket (I compare him St. Ray's Daon Merritt). I don't think he has any bad points in his game. He doesn't let the game come to him at times, but when he does, I love to see him play. This season he'll play for All Hallows J. V. team. Many people will agree with me, he's an All American in the making.'

8/28/01 HoopJunky6: 'Cangelosi Twins, Nick & Eric (2003) -- You have them listed way wrong. No change since 8th Grade. Here's thier update. Twins led Camden Catholic to Parocial A State Championship as sophmores with Eric the leading scorer of the team at 17.5 ppg and his twin brother Nick at 14 ppg. They are steadily developing the perimeter game and are both shooting 3s and ballhandling.
At 6'5" 210lbs.(16 years old) they are developing into very sturdy specimens. As Rich Marcucci of Atlantic Cape quoted, "If the twins develop thier perimeter fundamentals like they did thier front court game, they are solid D-1 prospects.'

8/26/01 Coach Rod Bussey: 'Kobiea Powdar is an upcoming senior at Franklin K. Lane. Lane had a dismal year last season, but Kobiea excelled on his team. Kobiea averaged almost 17 ppg. He has participated in Doc Necilli's Student-Athlete's tournament and 2 different sessions at the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camps. He will participate in Wayne Simone's Tournament during Columbus Day weekend. Kobiea stands 5'10 1/2" and weighs about 180 pounds. I'm expecting Kobiea to have a breakout year. 8/21/01 Lou Rizzo: 'I accepted an invitation by Jack Alesi, Xaverian's varsity coach to visit the Carnesecca - Sarachek camp at their new location at Delhi University. To say it was a great camp would be an understatement. This was a basketball lover's dream camp and considering it was their first year at this location they (the staff) didnt miss a beat. Players ranged from 1st grade to 12th grade and were given dorm rooms to stay in. Three all you can eat meals per day of good food, not lunch room stuff. At times there were as many as 14 games being played at one time. Three Point, Foul Shot & Dunk contests. Two full indoor courts as well as a dozen outdoor courts with glass backboards and breakaway rims and lights for night games. Tents were set up for the outdoor courts with cold gatorade and water. There was a Sports Trainer & EMS on site at all times along with campus police for security. For me what I appreciated most was that the players were actually taught something, they werent just put on teams and left to battle it out for a week. Players weren't just told to do something, they were also told why and how to do it. I had the advantage of seeing many of the high school players all summer long at various leagues and tournaments and by the last day of camp there were great improvements made. I also had the pleasure of meeting 84 yr. old John Isaacs of the Harlem Rens who wasn't afraid to share his basketball knowledge with all the players. This camp is a must for any basketball lover and I just wanted to let the entire staff know that their efforts were appreciated. You could just see in the quality of play on the final day.'

Game 1 : 6 Rising Stars Vs 3 Rena Coa ( Defending Champs) : It was an upset as the Rising Stars won the game 78 to 75 behind the scoring of Curtis Stinson who finished with 33pts. Rising Stars advances to play Sunday in the championship game.
Game 2: 5 Harlem Lions Vs 1 Cesar's All Stars: In the first half it looked like Harlem Lions were going to upset the CAS taking a 40 to 32 lead at half behind the guard play of Alonzo Brown, Tahan Engram, and Jahkeem Washington who controlled the game by putting pressure on CAS. In the beginnig of the second half, the teams began to exchange baskets. The Lions built a 14pt lead with 11:00 to play. but it began to unravel as CAS put pressure on the inbounder Steven Souma and forced 5 turnovers to cut the lead to 4pts with 5:00 to play behind the efforts of Alexis Perez, Jose Cabreja, and Serge B.
With the game tied at 78, CAS passed the ball to Jose Cabreja who the missed layup but Steven Polanco put it back in to give CAS 80 to 78 lead with :24 remaining. The Lions tried to get the ball inside but couldn't as the ball was tipped and stolen by Mike Mercedes who was fouled with :15 to go. The Lions stole it on the inbounds and made one last attempt to tie the game but the ball was tipped out of bounds with :03 to go and that was the final score. Leading Scorers were Alonzo Brown (Lions), 16pts and Jose Cabreja (CAS) with 17pts.
On behalf of the Lions, we tip our hat to CAS coach, Ceasar, who kept his team fighting till the end, good luck in the Championship. And also, we give two claps Lions style to Kenny Stevens and Ralph Pena for having us. As for my Lions, keep your head up, it was a good summer season and remember we are a family everywhere we go. A special thanks goes to Director of Operations Mr.Richard Brown, who was the one of main reasons why the Harlem Lions Seniors got his far.'

8/15/01 Marcus Johnson: 'Two Oustanding Rising Juniors from NYC -- Recently at a Tournament in Hartford, CT, I witnessed two players put on an excellent showing of not only skills but fundamentals. These two players played for the Caton Express, when I asked where they were from they calmly replied, Brooklyn, NY. Adrian Purcell with his lightning quickness and Scott Williams with a devastating outside jump shot were a duo to be unmatched. However, with their team lacking they were unable to qualify for the finals. Adrian averaged 17 ppg. 8 apg. and 2 stl, while Scott 19 ppg. 9 rpg. 4 apg in 4 games against admirable competition. They play for rivaling private schools in NYC (Packer Collegiate Institute, Trevor Day School) both rising juniors. While not able to obtain the exposure as Public and Catholic schools in NYC I believe that their skill should be recognized.'

8/12/01 Future133: 'I had the honor to be able to help coach one of the midget teams in the Show me What You Got All Star game. I helped coached the West team and they had one kid on the team that was outstanding. Akeem Tucker scored 34 points in a 1 point loss. Lincoln HS has two outstanding sophs, one who we all know and the other is Akeem. He scores so easily, can dribble very well and is so fluid in everything that he does. He went to the basket with no fear and caught a dunk or two. Akeem Tucker will be a D1 player who will grow to be about 6'6". The MVP of the game went to a kid who scored 22 points and is heading to Grady, I forgot his name. Grady has a stellar incoming class and another name to watch out for is James Neal. He is a guard who is also part of that stellar Grady class. It was a great morning of basketball. Jake Edwards who is a Brooklyn Beast AAU coach and a assistant at Grady, runs a great league in Show Me What You Got basketball. He put together a staff that knows what they are all doing and his league should get the same "pub" as all the other leagues in the city.'

8/7/01 SJB JV Coach: 'I just wanted to let the basketball world know about one of the best, but underrated, high school basketball coaches in New York City. James Schmidt has just been appointed the new boys varsity head coach at the Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn. He had spent the previous eight seasons as the JV coach at Regis High School, in New York City. During his tenure at Regis, his teams won over 130 games, won six Class "C" JV regular season titles, and regularly advanced deep in the Class "B" playoffs. (There are no playoffs in the JV "C" Division.) In 1998-99, his JV went 23 - 2 and advanced to the finals of the "B" playoffs, where they eventually fell in double overtime to Iona Prep. He almost became the first coach to ever win the "C" and "B" titles in the same year. This past year, Schmidt took his team to the semi-finals of the JV playoffs. His schedule has regularly consisted of teams from the "B" and "A" divisions, and on many occasions he has come out victorious. James Schmidt is one of the great coaches in the game because he gets the respect of his players and, in response, he gets them to overachieve against bigger and more talented teams. He will, without a doubt, get his players to do the same and make Berkeley Carroll a school to be reckoned with in the future.'

8/7/01 BERASM: 'The senior division semifinals are set after the upset win by #6 seed Rising Stars over #3 seed 84th Street. The first half looked like the #3 seed was going to advance after taking an 18pts lead with 10:00 to play behind the scoring of Ricky Solivera and Curtis Stinson on the bench for the Stars after picking up a tech in the opening minutes of the game. But then the momentum changed and the Stars battled back and chipped at that the lead to make it a 7pt. deficit at halftime, 40-33. The opening minutes of the second half began to look like 84th Street was going to pull away taking a 46-36 lead with 12:00 to play. But Curtis Stinson had a different idea and took over the game by going to the basket and drawing fouls. With 1:00 to play, the Stars took the lead at 62-61 on a 3pter by Jason Wingate. With :03 remaining, Wingate fouled and put on the line for two with the game tied at 67. He hits both for a 69-67 lead and that was the final score. One Note: The Stars were playing w/o Alan Ray. Curtis Stinson finished with 34pts. and Wingate chipped in 12pts. Ricky Solivera finished with 20pts for 84th Street.

Riverside played the cas/warriors with the warriors taking that game 48-39. Kiril Waschamann (All Hallows) took over the game with he's inside game and lead the team with 18pts. The second game Abyssinian played the Mustangs. Both teams were missing key player but Abyssinian played great full court defense to win 62-46. Steve Sumo led them with 14pts and John Archibald stepped up with 10pts. The Warriors beat Abyssinian by one before so this will be a good one on the 18.'

Harlem Lions sends Team And 1 packing in a first round playoff game at Dyckman Summer League. In a hard fought contest which saw the game go into overtime, The Harlem Lions prevailed and come away with a 86-79 victory. The Lions were outmatched at key positions, especially at the center position where 6'6 Sam Edwards had to contain 7'0 Anthony Lalor. Team And 1 featured notable players such as Peekskills' Rashard Turner, a top-rated guard in the tri-state area.
Eventhough Turner and Lalor gave a good effort, they were not able to hold the Lions' fastbreaking attack and smothering defense due to the outstanding guard play of 5'10 Tahan Engram and 5'8 Jahkeem Washington. The final exclamation point to this game was a crowd pleasing dunk by Sam Edwards on a fastbreaking continuation play to put the Lions up 8pts with :30 to play and free throw shot to take. Sam Edwards finished with 16pts and Jahkeem Washington chipped in 13pts.'
8/5/01 Brooklyn Scout: 'Brooklyn USA won the Queens Citywide Bantam division title with a 71-47 romp over the Brooklyn Bridge. John McMichael was the top playmaker with 8 assists to go along with his 8 points.
Brooklyn USA finished 7-0 on the season and will be sending at least one team to the overall Citywide finals for the 12th consecutive year.'
8/5/01 LOVE2REF4EVER: 'I had the pleasure to officiate the New York High School All-stars Vs the Philadelphia High School All-stars at The Holcombe Rucker Park in Harlem. The playground was filled to capacity to watch the two cities go at it. This event was the third game of a New York Vs Philadelphia Harlem Week.
Showcase. The New York all-stars were led by Tim Doyle, who had the park on it's feet with some spectacular moves. New York led for the entire game, then Marvin McCullough sprained his ankle and New York seemed to fall apart. Philadelphia fought back and with under a minute brought the game within three points. Neither team seemed like they could make their free throws down the stretch. With New York up by one point and the ball, a costly New York turnover resulted in a fast break basket for Philadelphia.
With seven seconds left in the game New York inbounding the ball in their frountcourt and Bobby Santiago with the ball took a jump shot that missed, Philadelphia grabbed the rebound and time expired. This was an excellent game from start to finish, congratulations to Philadelphia.'

8/3/01 Glenn Bynes: 'The New Brunswick Zebras won the Middlesex County Summer league championship. The Zebras led throughout the game but pulled away in the second half to finish the summer league at 12-0. The Zebras were led by Junior to be Marvin Taylor. Key contributor were sophomore to be sensation D. Jarrett, Kareem Byrom, Greg Dotson, Kobe Stevens & Eric Bynes. The Zebras tenacious defense proved to be too much for the solid Panthers from Perth Amboy. Don't count the Panthers out, they should be among the top teams in the county once the regular school season begins. The Panthers were led by their starting center and soon to be junior Brett Brown who is also the starting quarterback for the Panthers football team. Coach Paige said that he hopes this continues once the regular season comes into play. Zebras are a definite top 20 team in the state as long as they continue to play team defense first and remain disciplined. Everyone seems to know their role.'

The charismatic Doyle was the guy with the ball in his hands at the end of the Panthers game that sealed the Big Time title. In a series of dribbles and moves that cannot be explained by humans, Doyle held his own impromptu audition for the Harlem Globetrotters. Tim, what were you thinking?'

Teams such as "No Limit" featuring "The Future" and "The Wall", with show stopping guard Timmy "Headache" Gittens., and of course, the house team, AND1, will rock the park with some serious BBall. If this is not enough, then check out the teams 'Fat Joes", Lord Finesse or the X-Birds with former LIU star Charles Jones. The action doesn't stop here but continues on Sunday @ 1 pm with Junior and Senior Division games. Least we forget the "Ladies", Midgets and Biddie Divisions who played in this 54 teams event. 8/3/01 BERASM: 'The Harlem Lions Senior Team came out on a mission today against Dyckman senior team @ Dyckman Summer League. The house team thought that they were going tame the Lions and come out with an easy victory cause the Lions came out a little flat at the beginning of the game. After taking 9- 8 lead on a tomahawk dunk by Sam Edwards, the Lions went on a 27 to 4 run to take a 36 to 12 advantage at halftime. During this run, the trio of Malik Brown, Laurence Smith, and Levon Hickman come alive with 16pts, 4stls, 10 rebs combined. In the second half, Dyckman got a burst from Jose ( the Apartment) with 8pts but the Lions answer back with a 10 - 0 run behind the 2blks and 4 steals by Chaz Johnson and Smith who pushed the ball to Sam Edwards for a few more dunks. The final score was 62-43 Lions. Sam Edwards finished with 20pts.10 reb.'

8/2/01 Glenn Bynes: 'The New Brunswick Zebras HS basketball team is looking to finish the summer at 12-0 if the can beat a solid Perth Amboy team tonight on the main court @ 8:30 @ Middlesex County College in Edison. The Zebras have had a balanced attack through all of the first 11 victories. In a few of their games they were missing players but still managed to win. They are yet a young squad with the leading scorer Marvin Taylor coming back and is only a junior. Key players this summer have been: Marvin Taylor, Dwayne Jarrett, Eric Bynes, Kareem Byrom, Kobe Stevens and Greg Dotson. The most important thing about the team this year is that the bench players are coming in and the Zebras don't lose a beat. This is a very solid Central Jersey Group 2 squad that should be a top twenty team in the state if the players continue to play "TEAM" defense, as they have shown all summer. Again, these players are young and yet learning. They are currently starting one senior, three juniors, and one sophomore. The experience from winning the Central Jersey Championship last season has produced hunger to get back to the finals and make a run at getting to the Tournament of Champions. Discipline, defense, ball control, rebounding, unselfishness, fan support, and coaching, have been the foundation for this young New Brunswick Zebra squad.'
8/2/01 BiG L hOtDay: 'Lamar White is a 5'8, point guard, who can really play the true point guard role. Most players today, try hard to score 20 a game, but Lamar can score 10 points and avg. at least 8 assists. He is very underrated because he goes to Mount Saint Michael, which doesn't promote their basketball program. He can play with the best, but his name is only in about 3 websites. I'm letting you know about Lamar White and you see potential in this kid. He plays with a rising AAU team Holy Cross Panthers, Coach Artie Greene of the Bronx Ravens is very familiar with Lamar White. So Please look out for him.'

8/2/01 Ivanthegod: 'Best performances in Vegas -- 1.Sean Phaler's 45 point performance against Lenny Cooke was unexpected. It was clear Lenny could not guard him. He had moves for days in the paint and kept on getting Lenny jumping around with his series of shoulder and head fakes. He has very good footwork and his up and under move was smooth. 2.Number 2 has to be Dave Seals DESTROYING Anthony Roberson. I did not think highly of Dave Seals I just didnt think he could play at a high level but he proved me wrong. He was doing whatever he wanted to Roberson who had nothing for Dave. If Seals continues to play like that he will go high D-1. 3. Even though Jason Fraser had a great game in the semi's I think Elijah Ingram against Oakland Slam-N-Jam was crazy! He was hitting 3's playing with his defender off the dribble and was 9-14 from the field for 25 points and played great defense the whole game. There were a lot of other great performances but I consider these my top 3 because of the way they were done.'
