1/31/02 Brooklyn Scout: 'Quincy Douby, a 6-3 senior at Grady HS, broke the 50-point barrier for the third time this season when he scored a career-high 64 points as the Falcons defeated Lafayette 120-41 Wednesday.
Douby finished the first half with a halfcourt bomb at the buzzer that gave him 10 three-pointers and 38 points. The Hofstra-signee ended with 16 treys, 2 short of the record 18 threes he converted while scoring 63 points against FDR last month.

1/30/02 Juiceallstars: 'Super soph. Sebation Telfair hit for 52 pts. in a blowout against F.T. Hamilton H.S. For this, Telfair went over the 1,000 pt. plateau for his young career. Telfair has scored 1,018 in less than two years.'
1/30/02 Coach Peter Goyco: 'Siena College bound Patricia Lyons finished with 25 points against Christ the King and upped her career-total to 2,008 to become the all-time leading scorer at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School. She is the 63rd Girl in the New York State Girls' Basketball --2,000 Point Club.'
1/30/02 Paul Brown, Gauchos: 'Congratulations to Coach Ron Brown and the Long Island University Blackbirds on their recent mini winning streak. Coach Brown has done a fantastic job with that team and definitely deserves to be considered for the permanent post. Tony Childs, an assistant to Jeff Ruland at Iona College would also be great. However, there is one person who's name must also be mentioned and that person is Julius Allen. Coach Allen is a NYC guy who currently is an assistant coach at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. He was also an assistant to Ray Haskins during the Blackbirds most successful campaigns, which included an NCAA invitation and an NIT bid. During that era those games in downtown Brooklyn were special events and you were just happy to get inside the building, forget about finding a seat.
It would be fantastic to get the LIU Blackbird hype back again and there is no doubt that any of these fine young coaches could do just that!'

1/29/02 Coach Ted Gustus: 'Sad news in the New York City basketball circle, lengendary coach Gil Reynolds passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2002. Coach Reynolds was indeed a legend in the basketball community, as he has coached thousands of young men for over 40 years. Many of the players he has coached went on to play professional basketball and college basketball. A strict disciplinarian, coach Reynolds was known for keeping many youngsters in check and focused on their goal to do well as an athlete and as a citizen. He simply kept a lot of people out of trouble. I will be posting information about Coach Reynolds' funeral arrangements and how you can contribute to his memorial fund. Once again, a great man that has taken care of many, now it is up to the many (athletic community) to take care of him!'
1/29/02 Rich B:.'I just wanted to let everyone know that a great man, and coach passed away last weekend. For those of you who did not know Coach Gil Reynolds you missed a special person. Gil enjoyed taking the kid who everyone said couldn't play or needed work, and making that kid a competitor. Unlike many coaches today, he taught life skills and hardwork, in addition to basketball. Gil was the king of grassroots basketball, and relished in the fact, that he could beat bigger programs with better players. Many of Gil's kids came from Bed Stuy-Brooklyn, however anyone familiar with city hoops over the last 30-35 years, has either met, seen, or played against a Gil Reynolds coached product. Names like Larry Washington, Al and Bernard King, John Salley and Sid Green were some of his guys.
May You Now Coach With The Greatest Of All! Rest in Peace. We will miss you.'

1/28/02 All Star Report: Notes From The Timberwolves Triple Header of Hoops. Game No. 2, Patrick Henry 69 Brooklyn Lincoln(NY) 52.
1/28/02 BigBLUELIGHT1: 'I spent the day at the 3rd The Great 8 Hawkins Memorial Challenge Games @ Columbia University. The challenge was sponsored by the Lions of Frederick Douglass Academy and it featured some of the top PSAL teams this year and some of the top basketball programs in the tri-state area. The media did a great job of covering this event. This event was very nice.
In a event that featured so many PSAL teams, it was sad to see that the PSAL brass was not in the stands because they missed out on a wonderful display of good sportmanship by all teams participating in this event. I tip my hat to Coach Patrick Mangan and his players and staff.'

1/27/02 harlemshome: 'There has been a lot of recent hype regarding the independant schools athletics in general and their basketball in particular. So on Friday my son and I ventured off the routinie path of NYC high school hoops to witness this mysterious brand of ball that so few junkies lend credibility.
My expectations were much higher than my sons. I witness one of the teams featured (Trevor Day School) beat St.Raymond's Varsity B. The other school Dwight; continually fields solid teams with dual sport athletes and is as diverse as they come in personel make-up. Current Molloy guard Marlon Smith transferred from Dwight. Dwight ended up winning the contest. It was a "nail biter." We expected a corney unathletic contest but was treated to a great blend of uptempo run and gun with pinpoint sharp-shooting. There was even a little And 1 Mix thrown in from the guards of both teams. If you have'nt had the opportunity so see any of these games "take the journey" you will not be dissappointed. Other teams that are said to be good are of course Poly Prep, Collegiate, Dalton, Hackley and "Whoever." If you too take the journey let me know what you think.'
1/27/02 Rich Gallagher: 'I had my first opportunity to see Donnie McGrath in action this year last night as JFK (Somers) drubbed John Jay (Cross River), 68-39. McGrath, who will be playing for Providence in the Big East next year, led JFK with 33 points and 9 boards. McGrath's game has changed noticeably since last season. Whereas he used to look to pass first, he now has to carry the scoring load for the Gaels. His supporting cast at JFK is not nearly as talented as in years past, so the offense isn't run at the same breakneck speed that we saw last season. Even so, McGrath has overcome the loss of four starters from the 2000-2001 team to lead JFK to a surprising 8-2 record, their only losses being two very narrow defeats by Horace Greeley. Last night the Gaels started very slowly against John Jay, trailing for most of the first period while McGrath couldn't get his outside shot to drop. He started to find his range early in the second quarter and then really caught fire, finishing up with 33 even though he sat out most of the fourth quarter. In spite of his cold start, it was apparent to me that he has greatly improved his outside shooting since last year. His jumper looks very smooth with good elevation and a quick release. Through ten games he is averaging 30.4 ppg.
Because of early-season cancellations resulting from a teacher strike, JFK faces a killer schedule of 9 games in the next 17 days. Other than McGrath, this team has very little size and presence under the basket and isn't likely to go far in the Section One tournament this season.'
1/26/02 All Star Report: East Coast Jamboree Notes Part 2.
1/26/02 Daily News: Christian Brown, Rice Bad For Hallows
1/26/02 Peter Abraham, The Journal News -- MV beats White Plains.
1/26/02 EDavi11812: ' Jack Curran and his Stanners reigned over the Royals. Today @ Christ the King they congratulated Jack Curran on winning his 800th game, and honored Bob Olivia on winning his 400th game. They both have dedicated many years of coaching good players in the CHSAA.
CK kept the lead for most of the game. They had the game locked down, at least they thought they did. Marlon Smith, Kevin Hamilton, and Jamal Wagner stepped up their defense and forced turnovers giving the Stanners a chance to get back in the game. With a couple of seconds left in the fourth and the Stanners down by 3, # 21 Kevin Hamilton drew the foul while shooting a 3 pointer. Hamilton made all 3 of his foul shout to tie the game. CK couldn't get the last shot in so it went into overtime. Sundiata Gaines rebounded and scored most of his points driving and drawing the foul. It was Yadda time. He's one of the smallest forwards in the league, but he gets the job done. He is versatile and can play any position. Stanners won 75-72 . #10 Japhet McNeil finished with 23 points, # 5 Mike King with 16 points and # 45 Michael Claxton with 12 points for the Royals.# 20 Marlon Smith with 23 points, # 23 Sundiata Gaines with 18 points, # 21 Kevin Hamilton, and # 32 Kevin Diffley with 11 points each for the Stanners.'

1/25/02 Gg25rpg: 'Have you heard anything about the Trevor Day School Dragons? Even though they are just a private shool, they probably have one of the best back courts in the city with Billy Dodson ( over two thousand points) Kevin Draughon and Matt Berkin. These kids are fun and exciting to watch. If you haven't caught one of their games, I sugget you do. I honestly feel that they could compete with any team in the city if they had some more height. They have a big game against Collegiate on Monday.' Web note: The search engine above yields 38 hits for Trevor and 13 for Dodson.
1/24/02 Glenn Bynes: 'New Jersey Wildcats players are on the "BALL" this season. Dan Dugan is scoring over 20 ppg for Summit HS. Sean Lynch is scoring around 20 ppg for Del Val. Eric Bynes helps lead New Brunswick to their 7th in a row. Spencer Cortbitt hit a buzzer beater to help Old Bridge in a win over East Brunswick. Old Bridge is one of the surprise teams in Middlesex Cty this year. Calvin Cannon is making his presence known at St. Joe's of Metuchen since hitting the hardwood after his transfer. Everett Morgan has lead Laurinburg to an 8-2 record while receiving 2 All Tourney trophies so far. Derrick Williams and Jason James are key contributors for a solid Lawrenceville Prep squad who almost upset Blair Academy. Jarrett Lewis is scoring over 20 ppg for Lower Merion HS in Pa. Robert Hines has become a valuable adition to an already powerful St. Pat's team in Elizabeth. Lee Bynom a talented 6'5 15 year old is now at Solebury in Pa.

1/23/02 Daily News: Molloy Edges Loughlin In Playoff Atmosphere.
1/23/02 EDavi11812: 'Molloy defeats Loughlin in double header. Stanners varsity beat the Lions 67-66. The game started at 4 o'clock in Loughlin's gym. There was a reasonable crowd there. Some of the coaches doing their regular scouting behind the scenes. The game went tick for tack in the first half. # 21 Kevin Hamilton did his part scoring by the end of the first half he had 10 points with his 3-point jumper, or his strong penetration to the basket for the Stanners # 34 Curtis Sumpter finished the first half with 19 points for Loughlin. The score was 33-32 and Loughlin was up. One of these teams needed a good run to capture the game. Loughlin had that momentum for a while, went on an 10-0 run in the third. But one of their key players #5 Jason Olive got his fourth foul, and had to sit out the rest of the third. That was a turning point in the game for Loughlin. Coming into the fourth quarter #20 Marlon Smith, and # 32 Kevin Diffley did everything they needed to do, to win the game for the Stanners. Smith with his free throws and his quick penetration to the basket. Diffley with his defensive and offensive rebounding in the paint. Each team played a good game, but when it came down to it, poor rebounding and a lot of turnovers on Loughlin's behalf cost them the game. # 32 Kevin Diffley finished with 19 points, # 20 Marlon Smith with 17 points, # 21 Kevin Hamilton with 15 points and #42 Jamal Wagner with 10 points for the Stanners. For the Lions, # 34 Curtis Sumpter with 34 points, # 20 Kojo Mensah with 16 points and Kirk Bunn with 10 points. It was a pleasure watching two good well know coaches go at it. The nationally known Jack Curran, and the well known Ted Gustus. Who both have a long famous history in the basketball community.
After the varsity game, I stayed to watch some of the future varsity players on JV. the Stanners played hard against the Lions. Watching Kenny Pretlow coach always seems to amaze me. They were down at one point. Then he makes up a new play, then they go on a run for a while and maintains the lead. But the Stanners wouldn't give up. They got back into the gist of the game to clench the lead, and keep it. Stanners win 60-54 against the Lions. Both teams played well. But again the turnovers on Loughlin's behalf cost them the game. # 10 Dishawn Gist and # 33 Adekun Olanrewaju for Loughlin will be two players to look out for on the next level 02-03 varsity season.'

1/22/02 Love2Ref: 'This past weekend at Seton Hall University in South Orange New Jersey, there were some prime time prep schools showcasing their stuff. On Saturday night there was not a great turnout due to the bad weather, but if you did make it to the gym like myself you were in for a real treat. Sunday the weather was better and more people were in the stands. There were NBA scouts, coaches from various NCAA colleges, and some of the best officials from the New York City Metropolitan Area. I want to let you know the officials for this event did an excellent job. It felt great to see NYC officials have the opportunity to also showcase their skills. There was a great combination of prep school basketball players and great basketball officiating. All of the officials that were assigned to these games were members of Sports United Benevolent Officials Alliance (SUBOA) and my thanks to them for doing a great job.'

The Cougars currently post a 9-5 overall record, as well as a 4-1 league mark, which is good for second place, in the Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA. After dropping their league opener to undefeated St. Mary's, SJB has reeled off four straight league wins. Seniors Donald Brown (17.1 ppg, 10 reb/gm) and Marvin Cheese (13.0 ppg), junior Ryan Johnson (12.3 ppg, 55% FG's and 91% FT's), and sophomore Kevin Spann (12.1 ppg, 4.3 assts/gm) have led the way for coach JD Walsh's squad. SJB has the toughest part of their schedule ahead of them with Chaminade, St. Mary's and two matchups with St. Dominic's shortly after midterms. 1/19/02 John Miciotta: 'All Hallows reeled off 11 straight points after Molloy had scored the opening basket to garner an impressive road win. Bobby Santiago and Marvin McCullough set the pace early on the perimeter and Kirill Waschmann was strong inside. The Gaels held on to the big early margin thereafter thanks to a big lift off the bench from soph Ronald Ramon who displayed an impressive "mid range" game and terrific quickness. Ricky Soliver returned to the line-up and while he struggled with his outside shot he contributed with some impressive drives and good defense. For Molloy, hard working forward Jamal Wagner was impressive displaying shooting range out to the arc, and Yadda Gaines made several nice drives in traffic. With his improved shooting range Wagner should draw looks from low major schools where, with his athletic ability, he can play small forward and defend both wing positions. Adding a "catch and shoot" game to go along with his athleticism and strength should make him a prime target for those schools. Which ever school is smart enough to sign him, will also get a kid who makes all the hustle plays and who will do whatever ot takes to help his team win.'

1/18/02 JBDingle: 'Teaneck vs. Kennedy -- Another great game in the rough and tumble NNJIL, thought by many to be the best league in NJ. The undrmanned Knights of Kennedy, with a starting lineup averaging maybe 5'10", came out gunning their trademark 3's and made several in the 1st quarter, trailing 15-14 after 8 minutes. The Highwaymen went up by 7 when they suddenly slapped on a fullcourt press, which led to 2 quick hoops, but the Knights came storming back to close the gap at half. The 3rd quarter is when the game began to turn as Teaneck began using their size advantage by getting the ball inside to 6'6' Willie Irick, 6'7" Alex Noisette, and 6'4", 245 lb. Tamba Hali, the top football recruit in NJ. The Highwaymen also seemed to find the answer to Kennedy's press leading to several easy baskets.
By the middle of the 4th, it was 64-50 and many of the Kennedy faithful began to file out, as the 3s were not falling and the Teaneck size advantage looked to be too much. But wait - in the bat of an eye, it was a 3 point game with about 2 minutes and change as the turnovers began to mount for Teaneck. Coach March went to a lineup with better ballhandlers Keon Riggins, Tony Baxter (both of whom saw some bench time with foul trouble) and Kelia Brevard. This enabled Teaneck to regain their composure and ice the game. The final was 72-64. Willie Irick led the Highwaymen with 24 points and a boatload of boards, but this was truly a team effort as there were many contributors. Senior Naim Benjamin turned in a nice performance for the Knights.'

1/16/02 Daily News: Chris Taft, Xaverian Send All Hallows Reeling. And Roundup -- Sam Moise, JFK Stomp Gompers.
1/16/02 John Miciotta: 'Xaverian cruises past All Hallows -- The Clippers used a dominant effort by junior Chris Taft to open a lead that grew to 14 points and then put it on cruise control the rest of the way to a 9 point win. In the first quarter Taft had at least 4 blocks to go with 8 points and a number of big time rebounds in traffic. The shot blocking put a thought in the collective mind of the Gales and they got taken completely out of what they wanted to do offensively. John Carey and his nucleus of seniors must right the ship quickly in order to make a strong run toward the playoffs. Although, they are missing Idiongo Occuro, who is injured for the season, and filled an important but limited role as a second inside presence, can put things back together if Albert Forbes keeps developing in that role. They also need for Ricky Soliver, who missed today's game for unspecified reasons. When he's right he's one of the city's best players, and gives the Gales the kind of all purpose weapon they needed against the Clippers. Xaverian, on the other hand, just keeps getting better after a slow beginning to the season. Taft is playing with tremendous confidence in both himself and his teammates, and his unselfishness has helped the whole team learn to pass the ball and look for each other. They are likely the second best team in the CHSAA right now (behind Rice) and come playoff time they may well give the Raiders a run for there money.'

1/15/02 Greg Gurney: 'I went to watch JFK Somers against Byram Hills. JFK is coming off their second loss of the season and in the first half it was a scrappy game and JFK led by 11 behind Donnie McGrath's 18 first half points. Phil Dibuono of JFK has really been stepping up and turning himself into quite a player. He had 18 the other night for JFK and he followed up with a good game against Byram. In the second half JFK took control behind McGrath again and they put the game away. The final score was JFK 64 and Byram Hills 49. JFK is now 7-2. Donnie McGrath finished with 36 points and he is leading Westchester county in scoring averaging 32 points per game. If he keeps up playing this way, he should be considered for New York State Mr. basketball if JFK keeps winning. Phil Dibuono added 13 points and he is averaging about 13 a game now. Dibuono is a solid player who is only a junoir with potential to play on the next level. My evaluation would say he can bring it to the IVY league in a couple years because of his excellent work in the classroom. JFK also has a budding player in sophmore David Worth. Worth has been seeing a lot of time on the JFK varsity and is now starting. Worth plays over the summer for the Connecticut Flame and he was named to the 16:u all tournament team at Bob Gibbons. He can really shoot.'

1/10/02 bayshore: 'St Anthony 62 Lakewood 46. The Friars came away with a sloppy victory, which may prove costly to their tittle defense. They were not on top of their game and shot poorly overall.
St. Anthonys lone big man 67 Jr. Terrance Roberts went down at 5:17 of the forth and was assisted off the floor to emerge on crutches with his ankle wrapped and a splint under his heal. When he landed with a rebound he yelled in pain and went straight down grabbing at his instep. He was untouched.
St. Johns bound Elijah Ingram made his first appearance of the year at 6:00 of the first period with the Friars down four. He immediately drained two treys, converted a steal to a lay-up and dished an assist for a 4 point lead. The Piners never got closer trailing by 11 at the half and 22 after three.

At the end of the half the score was 42-18.# 10 Shawn Wynn and # 33 Chris Taft played a good game for Xaverian. Taft had about 10 dunks. Xaverian thought the game was over. They underestimated Coach Ted Gustus and his Lions, who stayed in the game. Sr. # 34 Curtis Sumpter's rebounding helped Loughlin a great bit. Loughlin's juniors Andrew Wright and Jamel Lynch never gave up. At the end of the third quarter junior, # 23 Jamel Lynch hit a 3 pointer to bring the Lions within 12 points. 1/3/02 Mike Johnson: '.Staten Island has some real good up and coming players! Seen these three play AAU together on the Staten Island Lightning. They are freshman starting on their respective varisty high school teams. Doug Elwell who is #35 on the Msgr.Farrell Lions plays down low in the paint at 6'5. The kid can flat out play. He leads the league in blocked shots and is one of the leaders in 3 point field goals. Also one of highest jumpers the island has to offer. The other 2 players are both guards. Kyle McCalarney who is #12 on Moore Catholic. He runs the point at Moore. He is one of the best dribblers on the island and he like Doug can flat out shoot. He broke a record already as a freshman, he broke Tim Hylands record which was 31 foul shots in a row. K-mac as they call him drained 34. Kyle is an excellent point guard especially at his size 5'10 and he is still going to grow. The last player is the leading scorer out of all the underclassmen on Staten Island. His name is Ramsey Hill #23 on New Dorp. There are not a lot of words to describe this young man. He scores at will most of the time. He also stands 5'10. If any scouts get some free time defintely come down to Staten Island and get a glimpse of what these kids have to offer. You defintely will see one by their senior year playin for the city-title. Thats how good these young ball players are. They are by far in the top 10 of all freshman basketball players in NY because I have been around and never have seen talent like theirs.'
