2/17/02 NJ Hoops: Camden Catholic edges Middle Township

2/17/02 Daily News: Kyle Neptune Goes Into Orbit. Improvement boosts Friends.

2/17/02 Lorenzo Azzi: 'McDonalds -- Paul Williams from St. Pats should have made the top 100 list. He's having a terrific season and is one of the best (if not the best) big man in NJ.'

2/17/02 Keith Mason: 'Personally I don't feel Lenny Cooke should play in the McDonald's game, for the simple fact that he didn't play high school basketball this season. He is definitely good enough to play in the game and is the best senior in the nation. Many say it is Amare Stoudamire or Carmello Anthony, but on the occasions he played against those two he was the best player on the court. While you can make the case that he isn't playing ball this year to work on his studies, that really isn't true. He is actually doing the same thing that any 5th year senior is doing, he is traveling with Riverside's 5th year team, playing against College JV teams which is exactly what players like James White and Julian Sensley did last year year. Lenny Cooke doesn't need the McDonald's All-American game to be a success at the next level, so I don't think he'll worry about it too much. I hope he goes to St. John's next year, because at 6'6 his perimeter jumper is not ready for the NBA. And speaking from experience nobody should miss out on the opportunity to live the college life.'

2/17/02 Abman55: 'St. Dominic of Oyster Bay will host St.Anthony of Jersey City today at 3:00 PM.'

2/17/02 SJB Basketball: 'Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA Standings - St. Mary's (10-1), St. Dominic (10-1), Chaminade (7-4), St. John the Baptist (5-5), Holy Trinity (3-8), St. Anthony's (1-9), Kellenberg (1-9).

2/16/02 Jeff Goodman: Here is the link to the 100 finalists for the McDonald's Game. Please let me know if there is anyone you feel that should have been included, but was left off.'  Web note:  Send Lenny Cooke. He's not playing ball because he's working on his studies. Make the point that studies should come first. Change the rules if necessary.

2/16/02 Louis Xifaras, Rice41@aol.com, Director of Basketball Operations, Queens RimRockers Basketball. The Queens RimRockers improved to 1-1 today in the Kenny Kings 18 and under Tournament by beating St. Paul. Top players were Bryant star Diego Aguiar, Peter Caris (Aviation), and Nick Hamilton (McClancy). More news at our webpage at www.QueensRimRockers.com.

2/16/02 Richard Gallagher: 'Form held true during the first round of the Section One tournament Friday night, as only three mild upsets were recorded. In Class B, #9 Fox Lane edged #8 Panas, 71-69. In Class C, #10 Woodlands held off #7 Croton-Harmon, 67-58 and #11 Dobbs Ferry upset #6 Briarcliff, 71-58.

Big numbers were being put up everywhere. Will Cherry scored 26 in Mount Vernon's win over Carmel. Quintin Martin had 24 points and 14 boards to lead White Plains over Roy C. Ketcham. Darnell Ghee hit for 32 points as Spring Valley beat Lincoln. Donnie McGrath of JFK (Somers) scored 32 points against Port Chester. Chris Fleischer had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Greeley. Adrian Carvalho of Fox Lane scored 30 points against Panas in spite of fouling out halfway through the fourth quarter. Tom Jennings had 26 points to lead Lakeland over Albertus Magnus, and Sean Stahn of Ardsley netted 25 in a win over Nanuet. At Peekskill, Rashard Turner had 23 points, 8 assists and 6 steals while Hilton Armstrong chipped in with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals as the Red Devils routed Brewster. P.J. Loussedes scored 38 points in Arlington's win over John Jay (East Fishkill).

There will be some interesting matchups in the second round. In Class A, #4 White Plains will take on #5 New Rochelle, which barely squeaked by Scarsdale. Two Dutchess County powers will face off as #2 Poughkeepsie hosts #7 Arlington. Arlington barely made it past John Jay (East Fishkill) in double overtime. The best game in Class B shapes up as #5 Greeley v. #4 Lakeland. #6 Ardsley will bring a 10-game winning streak to #3 Kennedy, which has won 13 straight.

In a first round Class B girls game, Our Lady of Lourdes (Poughkeepsie) won its 20th game of the season by routing Brewster, 84-34. Lourdes is ranked #7 in the country by USA Today and is a prohibitive favorite to repeat as state champion. Lourdes has now won 20 or more games for 17 consecutive years, a truly amazing feat.'

2/16/02 John Miciotta All Hallows 56 CK 50.

2/16/02 Pdiddy9682: 'Rice swept Loughlin today in a triple header at the Gaucho's Gym. In the varsity game Rice won 88-60, with a balanced attack. Christian Brown had 26 (6 threes) Arturo Dubois had 16, Steve Burtt had 12 and Shagari Alleyne had 11. Loughlin was lead by Curtis Sumpter and Kojo Mensah who had 18 and 12 points respectively. Rice won the JV game 80-71 in three overtimes. Rice also won the Freshman game by 9.'

2/16/02 Newsday: Christian Brown Steps Up To Propel Rice Past Loughlin.  And Can Anyone Beat Amityville?

2/16/02 Daily News: Suspended Lincoln basketball coach Dwayne (Tiny) Morton Mulls Next Move.

2/16/02 NJ Hoops: St. Pat's runs past St. Mary's.

2/16/02 Peter Abraham, The Journal News: New Rochelle beats Scarsdale.

2/16/02 Peter Abraham: 'It's a travesty Donnie McGrath isn't on the list of 100 finalists for the McDonald's All-American game. His team is 18-2 and McGrath is averaging 30.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists for JFK Catholic in Westchester. He's shooting 52 percent on 3-pointers (75 of 154) and 88 percent from the foul line. What more does he need to do? He was an all-star at the ABCD Camp, an AAU standout with the Gauchos and Ravens and has signed with Providence. Ask anybody who has seen him play at IS8, he's the real deal. Meanwhile Alan Ray makes the list despite not having played all season. Nice to see the McDonald's people are paying attention.

It's a repeat of last year when Ben Gordon was ignored because he worked on his game all summer instead of hitting the AAU circuit. It's worth noting that Ben is averaging more points in college than all of the McDonald's AA guards from last season with the exception of Chris Thomas and Dajuan Wagner. Outside of Thomas, T.J. Ford and Wagner, Ben is a better college player than the bunch of them. My guess is Donnie will prove to be the same kind of player.'

2/16/02 WJK8284: 'Iona Prep clinched the number one seed in the upcoming CHSSA B playoffs today with a win over Xavier. They will get a first round bye. The Gaels now stand 19-4 overall with a 13-2 league record.'

2/16/02 R. Passer: 'On Friday February 16th, Dwight (Manhattan) Boys Varsity upsets division A Long Island Lutheran. 6'8 Senior Dragutin Kravic had 32 points 16 rebounds.'

2/16/02 That's Wet: 'Molloy finishes at 8-5 in their league. Lemme tell ya they shoot good. Hamilton, Smith and Tuomey were hot from outside. Geffen from Prep did all  he could to keep it close. Molloy took over in the 3rd and the rest was garbage time. What is the deal with Molloy coach? This dude played the same 7 or 8 kids. This was the last home game of the regular season. Once Molloy got up past 25, it would be cool to play your subs, man. I think Prep played their whole team. I mean the gym was packed for the last home game. Parents and friends and classmates. A lot of people there were pissed by this! Isn't this supposed to be a team game? How can those guys on the bench feel like they are part of that team. I heard they're rated high and they did play good. But for the coach to keep his starters in for the most part, that stunk! So what if you win by 10 or 45? What about the team concept thing? If I were a parent, I would take my kid off that guy's team. Then maybe one game his starters would have 4 fouls in the 3rd quarter and he'd be lookin for subs. After the game, I heard this guy is a big deal but he disappointed a lot of people in their home gym even though they won a blowout game. Shame on him!'

2/14/02 Louis Xifaras, Assistant Freshmen Coach Monsignor McClancy High School. 'The Freshmen team beat Bishop Loughlin by 2 points for our 4th league win. High scorers were Salvador Junior Patricio and Dexter DeJesus with 20 points each. Outstanding floorplay and defense by guard Shalah White helped pace McClancy. Tremendous 4th quarter play by Marcus Diggs, who played the entire 4th with 4 fouls and earned 3 offensive foul calls, helped McClancy seal the victory. Our final regular season game is Friday vs powerhouse Holy Cross, 4pm at Cross.'

2/14/02 Newsday: Diego Aguiar Dominates for Bryant.

2/14/02 NY Post: Bryant, Diego Aguilar Crunch Kennedy.

2/14/02 Coach Will Stasiuk: 'PSAL A playoffs began today.  # 20 Bryant continues its late-season roll and upsets # 13 JFK! For all of today's playoff scores, please see www.psalhoops.com/.'

2/14/02 David Ross: 'Could you just mention Jericho High School?

Tonight we capped off an undefeated season, dispite losing our best play mid way through the season. His name is Justin Zale who I saw in one of the rankings posted on your site as the 159 (I think) best player in New York state for the class of 2002. We are probably the best class B public school team on the Island next to Amityville of course.'

2/14/02 Brooklyn Scout: 'It wasn't exactly Willis Reed and the 1969 NY Knicks. But Quincy Douby's  entrance at the start of the second half of Grady's PSAL playoff game  against Norman Thomas Wednesday energized the home crowd and inspired the  4th-seeded Falcons to post a 71-43 win and avoid a major upset to the 29th  seed. Douby was hoping to sit out the the game and rest his sprained wrist and  injured thigh, but Norman Thomas forced the Grady coaches to reconsider by taking a 27-23 halftime lead. Douby played the third quarter and showed his immense value to the team with his playmaking and scoring and Grady had an insurmountable 50-34 lead, having outscored the visitors 27-7 in the third quarter.

Despite his limited playing time, Douby led Grady with a game-high 17  points, followed by Kimani Blaize with 15 and Dwayne Marshall with 12. The  Falcons (20-8) will next face #20 Bryant, the Queens borough champions who defeated #13 JFK 81-61 yesterday.

2/13/02 Abman55: 'Attended St. Dominic vs St. Mary's last night at St.Dominic in Oyster Bay.....Final score was St.Doms 70 St.Marys 67 in ot....great and exciting game in front of crowd of 2000 plus ....The Bayhawks ended St.Mary's league winning streak at 22 games.....last team to beat them was St. Dominic nearly 2 years ago. Tim Doyle had 24 pts 12 boards and 8 assists...more importantly he played under control with maybe two turnovers.....Jrs Leigh Moglia and Brian Leach had 16 and 12 respectively and were deadly from the outside....St Mary's 6 4 Jr. from Africa Mamadou Diakhate had 16 pts and missed a potential game tying shot at the buzzer to end the game....also had a costly technical foul in the fourth quater. Tim Wall had a great game for St. Mary's nailing seemingly every shot he took....smartest coaching move of game was St. Doms coach Rob Pavenelli subbing Soph Dwayne Whitfield for Tim Doyle defense for offense in overtime preventing Wall from getting any good looks in overtime.....St.Doms is the only L I team to beat St.Marys in the 5 years...3 wins...Most likely these two shall meet again at Hofstra for the league title in March...should be a great game '

2/13/02 Richard Gallagher:  'The seedings for the New York Section One tournament have been announced. The top seeds: Class A  1. Mount Vernon,  2. Poughkeepsie,  3. Spring Valley and 4. White Plains. A Mount Vernon, Poughkeepsie final looks like a good bet in Class A. New Rochelle, which earlier appeared destined for one of the top seeds, slumped late in the season and is seeded #5.

Class B  1. Nyack,  2. Peekskill,  3. JFK (Somers),  4. Lakeland.  Once again the Section One seeding has been done solely by record, without regard to strength of schedule. Consequently, undefeated and defending Class B champion Nyack get the top seed in spite of the fact that the toughest Class B opponent they faced during the regular season was Tappan Zee (#7). Peekskill, which played a much tougher schedule than Nyack, has to be considered the favorite in Class B in spite of the #2 seeding. Peekskill and JFK didn't play this season but had two thrilling games last year and could meet in the semi-finals at the County Center. Horace Greeley (#5) also has a legitimate shot at making it to the County Center.

The top seeds in both Class A and Class B go into action on Friday. The complete brackets can be viewed at www.swboces.org/athletics/.'

McClancy's Elvis Dajonavich's head was split open as a result of a collision with Kirk Bunn. An ambulance came to carry him off the court. Hopefully he will have a speedy recovery.'

2/13/02 Ronald Idoko: 'The idea of creating special academies for athletically talented students is a great idea. Think about all the kids who never got a chance to make to the next level because their school wasn't all that great in sports or their coach didnt care. I know so many kids who could have played their respective sports well in college but weren't given the chance. I think the B.O.E. should go through with the plans to create the schools.'  Web note: see  "Open Letter to the PSAL".

2/12/02 Coach Will Stasiuk: 'For continuing coverage of PSAL boys playoff games, please see www.psalhoops.com/. All of today's Boys B results are in. 2/12/02 BOOKSNBALL: 'Forwarding this to you as a "Open Letter to the PSAL", in response to the Sunday (Feb. 10,2002) front page story in the Daily News about the Board of Education creating specialized "Sports Academies". The PSAL web site indicated they were going to post it, but as of today they haven't. I hope that you can post it and at least get the word out and get people thinking about all the reasons that creating these academies is a misguided idea. The person behind this (Arthur Avedon) works for the Board of Education, but NOT the PSAL. '

2/10/02 Paulyhoops: 'I would also like to respond to the report on adding to players stats. Although I agree that this practice happens I do not think it was fair to single out Gary Ervin. Mr. Simmons states that he was at three Robeson games that week, games against Bannaker, at South Shore and vs Telecomm. First, the Bannaker game was a Robeson home game, he was not there. Second, the South Shore game was at South Shore and no spectators were allowed in the gym and finally, Robeson did not even play Telecomm. Again I am not saying that all of Ervin's stats were totally accurate, but if you watch Ervin play, you would see that he not only scores, he gets everyone else involved. Robeson is not a one man show, in any given game they can have three, maybe four players in double figures. The team averages about 80 + points a game. ... Also be advised that the PSAL has an offical scorer at playoff games so we will get better kept stats.'

2/10/02 Daily News: All Hallows Misses the Point -- Mystery score leads to defeat vs. L.A. squad.  And Gompers in Bronx PSAL Final.

2/10/02 Brooklyn Scout: 'Grady's Quincy Douby and Robeson's Gary Ervin showed why they are the best players in the PSAL as they led their teams to thrilling comeback victories Saturday in the Brooklyn Borough semifinals at South Shore H.S. And both punctuated their performances with a game-ending dunk as time expired, setting up another Grady-Robeson matchup for the Brooklyn championship on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at St. Francis College.

In the first semi, Grady spotted Canarsie a 10-1 lead and trailed by as many as 13 points in the second quarter before they switched to a man defense that negated the Chiefs' strong perimeter game. Grady took its first lead with 1:26 left in the third period when Basil Leslie converted a three-point play for a 46-45 lead. Canarsie used a 9-2 run early in the final quarter to move back in front 56-50 with four minutes to go. But Douby and Grady were not done yet. Although slowed by wrist and leg injuries, Douby scored 13 of his game-high 30 points in the final quarter and capped the Falcon comeback with a three-pointer that put Grady up 63-62 with 57 seconds left. Robert White was fouled on a drive and sank both free throws to make it 64-63 for Canarsie with 37 seconds on the clock. Leslie then made another big basket for Grady, scoring the game-winner with 16 seconds left and Douby sealed the 67-64 win with a steal and dunk at the buzzer.

The second game between Robeson and Boys & Girls was tied at 52 entering the final quarter. The Kangaroos moved ahead 63-56 with 4:39 left before Robeson turned up its pressure defense to regain control. Ervin took advantage of the hectic pace to pour in 20 points in those final minutes as Robeson emerged with an 84-74 victory. Ervin finished with 52 points, 37 in the second half, while Boys & Girls got 21 points from Carlos Collazo and 16 from Amadou Fall.

2/10/02 Coach Will Stasiuk: 'Interesting comments about stats. When reviewing stats in the boxscores on PSAL.org, I found some bizzarre stuff this year. For example I have several boxscores where teams have been credited with more assists than field goals scored in a game. Or better yet, I found a game where a kid was credited with 30 points and 20 assists, the only problem was that the kid supposedly scored or assisted on every basket in the game that wasn't a free throw. (I guess that team never scored a single basket off an offensive rebound or some other way!)

Why do these bizzarre things get reported? A few reasons: 1. Many student managers chosen by coaches do a poor job in keeping track of stats during a game. Sometimes its due to their lack of understanding, sometimes due to padding their friends stats, sometimes its because they watch and root too hard, not paying close attention to the game itself. 2. Some teams have no managers and simply make up stats 3. Some coaches are unscrupulous and pad their kids stats. Its a shame that this stuff happens, especially since the PSAL recognizes its statistical leaders in all its sports. In my program, I use 5 managers, 1 to do the book, 3 to do 3 different stat sheets, and 1 as a videographer. The kids still make mistakes sometimes, even though generally they try hard. That's why I sit down and review the game film , redoing the stats before I enter my stats on the psal website. Now I'm not saying that every coach should be that dedicated, but doing little things like checking if the stats actually add up, before entering them online, would be a good start.

2/10/02 LWJR62: 'Cyclones Basketball - hidden talent.  There is some talent that remains un or under reported. Watch for Preston Miley (Xaverian JV) and Robert Thomas. These sophmores can be seen at IS8 and ProStlye along with some talented teammates.'

2/9/02 Louis Xifaras, Assistant Freshmen Coach Monsignor McClancy High School. 'On Friday, Monsignor McClancy swept all 3 games vs St. Francis Prep. It began with the freshman game, as McClancy got off to a hot start. Good shooting by Dexter DeJesus (21 points) and Salvador Patricio (21 points) helped McClancy get a 43-29 halftime lead. Marcus Diggs scored 18 points and had 15 rebounds on his birthday and Shalah White had a great overall game with 14 points and 8 assists, proving once again to be one of the top, underated point guards in the city. McClancy improved to 11-9 and 3-8 in league play. The JV game was one of the best games all season that I've been to. Both teams came in hot and continued that hot play throughout the contest. St. Francis Prep was up 10 with 1:35 to go when Keenan Doliveira decided to start shooting. His first trip down the court he nailed a spot up 3 pointer, and the next possession down he nailed another spot up 3 pointer from NBA range and also drew the foul. After teams exchange foul shooting, Kwaku Osei made a big "and 1" play down the stretch to give McClancy the come from behind victory by 1 point. McClancy JV improves to 13-6 and 5-6 in league play. The varsity capped off the sweep with a 64-51 victory, improving to 9-12 and 2-9 in league play. Wesley Matthews scored 20 points, again showing everyone that he is one of the best kept secrets in NYC. The 6'3 junior is averaging 19 points and 6 rebounds a game. He is currently being looked at by Hofstra, Oregon St., St. Louis, Albany, Quinnipiac, and Rider. A great night overall for McClancy basketball.'

2/9/02 James Simmons: 'We all know that coaches sometimes add a rebound, assist or two to a player's total when calling in scores to the media - but to double or triple their stats! A case in point is the stats of Gary Irvin of Robeson this past week - he was reported to have 10 or more assists in games against Banneker, South Shore and Telecomm. I was at all three games and saw the tape again of  two of them - in no game did he have more than 5 assists. Hopefully, with the upcoming playoffs, more "official" stats are kept and this nonsense stops. By the way, I'm sure others are doing it to but something needs to be done to be fair to those that are earning their numbers. Any comments?'

2/9/02 EDavi11812: 'Loughlin defeated Christ the King today. The Lions had the lead the whole game. The Royals struggled to make a basket in the first quarter. By the end of the first half the Lions led by 10, with the score 29-19. The Lions defense caused a lot of forced turnovers during the third. # 10 McNeil needed to get to the ball to help his team out. But with the Lions doubling him, it was tough. So Claxton and Beauford were looked upon for the shots. They helped bring the 12 point lead down to 2. With some quick steals from Keith Jones and a block from Kirk Bunn, the Lions managed to keep their lead and win the game. The final score was 64-58. # 12 Mitch Beauford with 19 points, and # 45 Claxton, # 25 Markn both finished with 12 points each for the Royals. # 34 Curtis Sumpter had 17 points, # 32 Keith Jones with 12 points, and # 5 Jason Olive with 16 points for the Lions.'

2/8/02 Bryan Griffith, Big Apple Sports Inc & N.I.K.E.-1 Basketball Program Inc: 'Earlier I sent an email about a NYC guard (Karim Telfer) in Brooklyn III A  Division. On Wed.Feb 6th he played his final game for South Shore HS. Karim  is one of the many players that go unnoticed in NYC, simply because they do not play on the well known AAU Clubs - (Karim actually plays for N.I.K.E.-1 Basketball Team and The Madison Square Broncos). Karim's final stats (in a Division that has many top level, better publicized players such as Gary Forbes, Gary Ervin, Robert White, Amadou Fall to name a few) were very solid 15ppg, 4.36 rpg and 8.18 apg. His assist total ranks him 3rd in the Division, his scoring avg ranks him 11th all on a team that was not talented. Having to play point, shooting guard. This is a player that should be considered for All-Borough consideration.'

2/7/02 Coach Will Stasiuk: 'The great PSAL career of George Jefferson came to an end this evening in dramatic fashion. Automotive High School entered the final game of the season needing to upset Brooklyn Tech, which was trying to gain a share of the Brooklyn II 'A' regular season title. Tech had gone undefeated in league play at home this season. In a tense game Brooklyn Tech stormed back from a 11 point deficit to take a fourth quarter lead at 48-42. Auto went on an 8-0 run and then the team's traded baskets to 52-52. With 2.2 seconds to go Auto inbounded the ball to Jefferson with his back to the basket at the three point line on the left wing. With Brooklyn Tech's underrated star shooting guard Isaiah Davis (14 points) playing tough defense, Jefferson took one dribble, spun toward the basket and hit the winning three pointer at the buzzer for a 55 to 52 win. He finished the game with 28 points and 18 rebounds. Alas, Auto would finish at 8-8 (after starting the league season 2-6), one game out of the playoffs in their first year in the PSAL A league, as both Erasmus and Westinghouse gained their 9th victories in other games today. Yet, it was a fitting ending for a great PSAL career, for Jefferson (the PSAL's leading rebounder the last two seasons) who proved once and for all that he is a PSAL all-city talent this season. He finished his career with 1830 points and an incredible 1315 rebounds. (Only a broken wrist which kept him out of the final portion of his sophomore season, prevented him from reaching the  magical 2000 point career mark.) Jefferson will join Terrance Watkins and Keydren Clarke at St. Peter's next season.'

2/7/02  The Apple's Best Ballaz  JFK Catholic gets big game from Donnie McGrath against Horace Greeley.

2/7/02 K dogsss: 'I hear a lot about the elite seniors in NYC this year but you guys are all missing the boat on a point guard at Trevor Day called Kevin Draughon. Not only is he the MVP for Trevor Day but he is the best player in private school.  At the Dwight game his stats were 32pts, 10 rebounds 5assts.'

2/7/02 Tjasales: 'The 2nd Annual Garden State Christmas Classic is scheduled to take place @ Paramus Catholic High School, in Paramus, New Jersey December 27th-December 30th, 2002. 2/7/02 NJ Hoops: Top NJ Teams in Prime Time

2/7/02 Newsday: PSAL Battle for the Boroughs.

2/7/02  Brooklyn Scout: 'Robeson closed out a 14-2 PSAL regular season and tuned up for the upcoming playoffs with an 82-73 victory at South Shore on Wednesday. For South Shore, the game marked the end of a 5-11 PSAL season and was their  final game under head coach Bob Sherman, who is stepping down after 30 years at the helm for the Vikings.'

2/7/02  EDavi11812: 'Paul Robeson defeats South Shore 82- 73. Today was South Shores last game of the season. They played one of the top teams in the city, Paul Robeson. Even though they didn't win, they played one of the best games of their season. Roebson had the height advantage with Shakeem Mitchell in the center, but that didn't stop the Vikings. They played with heart. # 23 Earland Williams # 30 Kevon Morrison with 11 points, and # 10 one of the good players in the city Karim Tefler with 27 points. He led the Vikings for the past couple of years. #11 Gary Ervin had 28 points, and # 53 Shakeem Mitchell with 12 points for Robeson. Tefler is one of those players with game and a lot of heart. He believes in himself. You probably never heard of him, because he doesn't play for the Church or the Guachos. After the game I asked him, what is going to do next? " I going to the Y".

2/7/02 Peter Abraham, The Journal News: ' The University of Connecticut struck gold with Mount Vernon guard Ben Gordon. Now the Huskies want another Westchester player. Peekskill center Hilton Armstrong attended UConn’s 67-56 victory against Providence on Tuesday and was offered a scholarship by coach Jim Calhoun after the game.

“I’ve been thinking about UConn a lot more lately,” Armstrong said. “When I talked to (Calhoun) he made me believe I could play at that level.”

Armstrong, who is also considering La Salle, is expected to make an official recruiting visit to UConn in the next few weeks. The Huskies received assistance from an unlikely source on Monday when former Peekskill great Elton Brand advised Armstrong to strongly consider UConn.

Elton said if I could play at a big-time school like UConn I should take the opportunity,” Armstrong said. “That made me think a lot.”

2/6/02 Coach Ted Gustus: 'The athletic community paid a great tribute and farewell to a great American Hero, Coach Gil Reynold, who passed away this past week. Coach Reynolds funeral was held on Monday, February 4, 2002, there wasn't a seat or wall available, as hundreds came out to show their respect. Some of the greatest basketball players from Brooklyn came out to share their thoughts and reflections on coach Reynolds. Mel Davis (NBA) Albert King, Sidney Green and the president of Laurinburg Institute expressed their feelings. There were tears, laugher and applauds as the speakers reflected on their time as players for coach Reynolds. The family of coach Reynolds (all live in Las Vegas) was overwhelmed to see so many men who coach Reynolds has touched (literally)! He was a special person, who dedicated his life to using basketball to help men reach their goals. He was a disciplinarian, father, leader and a coach. He certainly has had a positive influence on my life as a coach and person. He will truly be missed!'

Behind the hot 3-point shooting of Shakim Berry, the Rams' senior squad beat the Lloyd Brown Panthers 103-51 in Pro-Style 2K2 tournament. The Rams are the first Pro-Style team to crack the century mark and their 52-point win is the tornament's largest. The entire Rams squad, Reggie Scarborough, Vernon "Swat-Man" Goodridge, Lloyd Clinton, Mark Holder, Doug James and Raheem Logue contributed big time in the win. Last weekend the Rams' junior squad defeated Each One Teach One 79-58 behind Euland Williams' 23 points. Douby finished with a game-high 23 points and 8 assists while Marshall added 20 points and 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double performance. Freshmen point guard Kevin White and forward Derek Echols were also impressive for Grady while Penn State-recruit Ben Luber led Council Rock with 19 points.'

2/2/02 BRO: Eyes on Paterson Catholic.

2/2/02 Bryan Griffith, N.I.K.E.-1 Basketball Program Inc. & Big Apple Sports Inc. 'New York City has an abundance of quality players; particularly guards. A few I can mention such as Sebastian, Quincy and Robert White of course Gary Ervin...but some top quality guards often get omitted from consideration. I happen to know of a fine guard whose name is Karim Telfer of South Shore HS, in the Brooklyn III A Division. He has held his own 3rd in assists (8.4) behind Gary (9.8) and Eugene Harvey (9.1) and 11th in scoring while playing injured and on a team that is not too talented. Karim has demonstrated that he belongs in the company of the top level guards.'

2/2/02 Peter Abraham, The Journal News: Iona Prep defeats Stepinac 66-54.

2/2/02 Hoopstown: Jason Fraser – Amityville HS – Villanova University.

2/2/02 Louis Xifaras, Monsignor McClancy Assistant Freshmen Basketball Coach. The freshmen team pulled out a big victory over All Hallows high school. A great offensive effort by Dexter DeJesus, Junior Patricio, Marcus Diggs and Shalah White sparked the Crusaders to our 2nd league victory. Solid foul shooting down the stretch helped seal the win. Our next 2 games are Tuesday 2/5 at 4pm at Molloy and a triple header vs St. Francis Prep Friday 2/8 at 4pm.

The JV McClancy team also pulled a victory over All Hallows but the varsity squad was defeated.

Carlos Arellano, 6'4" 290 lbs. power forward has transfered from St. John's Prep and is now attending Monsignor McClancy High School. Carlos, a sophomore, is an unknown player but brings a lot to the game. He has a solid jump shot to go with a good big man game in the post. He is currently playing with the Queens RimRockers AAU program and was on their 16 and Under roster in I.S. 8. Carlos will surely help out the Crusaders JV team this season, which already has wins over Holy Cross, All Hallows, and powerhouse Christ the King.'

2/2/02 John Miciotta -- Loughlin 81 Xaverian 65.

2/2/02 Bryan Griffith, N.I.k.E.-1 Basketball Program Inc. & Big Apple Sports Inc: ' I am saddened by the news of the passing of a fine man in Mr Gil Reynolds, a great teacher and mentor to many young men...I was fortunate to have been introduced to Gil by Sonny Lewis many years ago, I have been a better person, teacher and coach because of both men...The Brooklyn basketball community as well as the world of "grassroots" basketball has lost a teacher, a solid citizen and I have lost a friend. There are too few teachers of this game, and as Coach Screen stated earlier...We need help the youngsters of today increase knowledge everyday.'

2/2/02 Prime Time Shootout -- Event remains open for sponsorships, announcements and give aways.  Call Dave @ 609-203-3665.

2/2/02 Newsday: George Jefferson Lifts Automotive.

2/2/02  Daily News:  No 7-Footer, No Problem for Rice.

2/2/02 NJ Hoops: Hun tops Long Island Lutheran.

2/1/02 Coach Will  Stasiuk: 'Today I had the pleasure of coaching a player who had arguably the most incredible stat line and effect on a game in the entire PSAL season. George Jefferson refused to lose and kept Automotive's playoff hopes alive with a performance for the ages. Auto upset 1st place Grand St.Campus, behind St. Peter's bound George Jefferson's 57 points, 27 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Auto defeated Grand St. 92-81 in overtime. The Pistons led 49-31 at the half, but an intense Grand St. kept coming and took a 76-72 lead with 2:00 to go. Jefferson hit his 7th 3 point field goal to cut it to 76-75. With 3 seconds to go Doug Townsend (22 points) rebounded a missed 3 by Jefferson and hit a and 1 to send the game to overtime tied at 78. In the OT, Jefferson hit for 10 more points to lead Auto to the crucial win.

George who will lead the city in rebounding for the 2nd consecutive year, and finish among the top 3 scorers, is in my opinion right up there with Doubie and Ervin as a top PSAL senior. He has proven himself to be an all-city player minus the publicity of other PSAL stars, despite playing for Auto, which is not an elite PSAL power. Despite constant Box and 1 defenses, he has perservered and played so hard to keep Auto respectable in their first year in the PSAL 'A' league.'

2/1/02 Coach Will  Stasiuk: 'The PSAL season is down to its final 6 days and many playoff races are going down to the wire. For full details please click on http://www.psalhoops.com/'

2/1/02 Coach Carlton Screen: 'Coach Reynolds is gone, Now! A cloud hangs over Brooklyn. I am a Brooklyn coach who had many conversations with Coach Reynolds. He was a person that cared about New York City basketball. Our last conversation, we agreed that basketball was in a bad state, there were not enough grassroot teachers in the communities, people who would take time and show a young child how to dribble or shoot a basketball. Forget about a tournament.  Most children today want to play in a tournament, but don't know the rules or to play as a team. Everyone wants the microwave players on their team. Everyone wants to steal somebody elses time and effort with a pair sneakers or shorts, bags and trips around the country. But when they come back from those trips the players are still not able to do the basic fundamentals. We had a real good laugh together.  Because of our age, we knew that nothing stays the same forever. A change will come.

I cherished his friendship and will always remember Coach Reynolds as a great person '

2/1/02 Keith Mason of Apple's Best Ballaz: 'Today I was looking at the PSAL website and I noticed in a game on January 30th against Canarsie Gary Ervin had the most impressive box score I think I've ever seen,. He put up 56 points, grabbed 14 boards and dished out 12 assists, but all that came in a 93-90 loss, as Robert White responded with 41 points of his own, putting Canarsie in first place in the division. Ervin along with Sebastian Telfair and Quincy Douby, is making a very strong case for PSAL player of the year honors.  Those three are defintely all-city players this year, and should all be on the Daily News team.'
