3/11/02 Coach Ted Gustus: 'Now that my season is over at Bishop Loughlin, I have the opportunity to watch some super NYC basketball in Rice vs. All Hallows and Lincoln vs.Paul Robeson. All four teams are well coached and have some great talent. What I don't understand, is how in the world can NYC be the host of the McDonald's All-American game, at the world's greatest arena, and there aren't any NYC players participating in the game. Is the talent across the country that much better than our kids in the city? What is going on here? Having the opportunity to travel with my team to participate in these national tournaments, I can't say I have seen better guards than Gary Ervin, or any of the fantastic senior guards on Rice or Al Hallows! Yet, none of these guys made the McDonald's game in their own backyard. By the way, What about Curtis Sumpter? who was named MVP for the NYC CHSAA, which is considered the toughest league in the country. Why wasn't he selected to participate in the McDonald's game? After being away from coaching basketball for several years, I have quickly noticed that competition, enjoyment and the passion for the game has been substituted for the politics of the game. This is sad times for New York City hoops, as even Micky "D" (McDonald's) is "dissing" (disrespecting) NYC hoops in our own house! Sorry Folks! I just had to get this off my chest.'

I've seen Whitman play a number of times this year, and believe me, they can play with anybody. They are well coached, have both an inside and an outside game, good team speed, and play solid defense. Their close loss to Amityville was no fluke ! Former city standouts Sammy Mejia Bronx Roosevelt and Jermaine Miller FDA led there team to victory over this strong team. Mid major schools should take notice of these two fine D1 caliber players.'

3/5/02 Nastee III: 'The Long Island Championship is tonight, and as expected it has come down to St. Dom's and St. Mary's. Both teams finished the regular season 11-1, only losing to each other. The premiere matchup is Mamadou Diakhate and Tim Doyle. St. Mary's needs excellent play from #15 Jarid Weire, #12 Tim Wall and #25 Keith Tilly, who have risen to the occasion at times this year. They were big last time these teams played. The X-Factor for St. Dom's will be the recent improved play of junior guards #3 Leigh Moglia and #14 Thomas Paul. The last time these two teams met, Leigh Moglia scored a team high 24 points, capped off with a two hand dunk to begin overtime. Thomas Paul has been a sparkplug as of late for the Bayhawks. Game time is all set for 7:30 at Hofstra Arena, but I suggest you get yourselves there early to ensure the best possible seating.'

3/4/02 Abman55: 'Tuesday night at Hofstra arena...huge game St.Dominic takes on St.Marys 7.45 PM. This will be the third meeting between the two teams...each team won on there home court in the regular season. This game should be an absolute war (always is when they play). Only adding to the pressure is that the winner goes to the state playoffs in the B classification and eventually if all goes right would play fellow LI power Amityville in the Federation.  After splitting the league playoffs last year due to jealousy of rest of leage everyone is back to "B" if you wanted to be technical everyone in the league should be "A" except for Mary's and Doms.  Their schools are tiny in comparison to the rest of the leauge. Kellenberg, Holy Trinity, Chaminade, St.John the Baptist and St.Anthony's all have over 1200 students. St.Doms and St.Marys...500 maybe.  Can't wait for the rubber match between St.Doms and St.Marys tues night.....get there early.'

3/4/02 Bballtru: 'The CHSAA boys Long Island catholic school basketball league - obviously the all Long Island selections were scandalous.  Three of the best players in the league, Jared Weir and Keith Tilley from St Marys and Brian Houlihan from St Dominics should have been slected for the all Long Island team and were not.   St John the Baptist had two players on the team and they were knocked out of the playoffs the first round and came in fourth place in the regular season standings.  St Marys or St Domincs should have had two players on the team if any school was to have two, since they were the two best teams in the league. The voting was obviously poltical and the top players should be recognized for their hard work and good play the whole season.'

3/2/02 bonfire: 'Frederick Douglass Academy will be looking to advance to the semi-final round of the PSAL Playoffs at Lehman College this Sunday (2pm) when it takes center court against a strong Boys & Girls HS team. Last year FDA was denied that elusive win by a last second buzzer beater and has played this season with its "eye on the prize". Led by senior pg, Alonzo "El General" Brown (Rutgers,Colgate) senior double/double swingman Chaz Johnson, the return of sr. center Sam "Pdunk" Edwards, who missed last years playoffs, sr. Tahan Ingram and jrs. Malik Brown and Lawrence Smith, FDA will be looking to add another notch to its belt. Coming into the tourney as Manhattan Borough Champs with a 24-3 record and 15-0 in its division, the Lions will be hungry for even more. Coach Pat Mangan, never one to be satisfied, will tell you that his guys could use and extra practice day or two in order work on this new trap, that they are not hungry enough , that they play too much street ball or that the defense is not quite right. But if the truth of the matter be told, then it is this, FDA is one of the best coached teams in the city and this should be an exciting game to watch when FDA Davids meets Boys & Girls Goliaths.'

3/2/02 BOOKSNBALL: 'McDonald's Wake Up!  How do you come into New York City to play the McDonald's All-America game and not have ONE player from the New York City PSAL or CHSAA named to the team? (Fraser and Ingram deserved to be there, but Long Island & Jersey City are not NYC!) I know there are politics involved with these selections, many selections are based on summer team reputation and not always senior year play and many players over the years have been told they would play in the McDonald's game if they also committed to the McDonald's Capital Classic (now the Jordan game). But wouldn't it have been great if Quincy Douby of PSAL Grady was selected based on his electrified senior season (35 ppg and King of the 3's!) or Sumpter from Loughlin (smoothest swingman since Malik Sealy- Tom Konchalski where are you?) Not smart McDonald's, not smart! Hey I know there's a girls game and that the game is april 4th during Easter Vacation on a thursday. If McDonald's has rented the Garden for the DAY, why not add a early game, say at 2 pm or 3pm between the remaining great seniors in New Jersey vs. the 10/12 best New York City metro area players. Just a thought. What do you think?
