4/30/02 Louis Xifaras: This weekend, my 14U team competed in the Chase the Game AAU Tournament at Fordham University and beat one of the top teams, the Long Island Lightning. Our team was led by 6'5 center Mohamed Lo, who had 33 blocks in our 3 games while averaging close to 15 a game. 6'2 Davaughn Ellerbe and 5'11 Evans Pyrrhon provide great offense for us the entire tournament. 6'6 Kenny Louras, Mario Chabau, and Pedro Rodriguez provided exceptional rebounding and great guard play by Antonio Cannon, Jr., Shannon McBean, Chris Sylla and super 7th grader Alex Maharaj paved the way.'

4/30/02 Coach Rodrick Bussey: 'The Brooklyn-Queens Warriors went up to Dunmore, Pennsylvania and participated in the 17 and under Hoop City USA tournament. We lost the championship game to Antracite AAU 58-56, after winning 3 games on Saturday and Sunday. The Brooklyn-Queens Warriors were led in scoring by Fleans Devrishi (Bryant), Chris Vega (Lane) and Chris Aguirre (Edison). Marques Damon (LaSalle Academy-10th grader) stepped up throughout the tournament. B/Q Warriors will be participating in the Gymrat Tournament in May.'

4/30/02 PrepStars: 'Things look good for Syracuse and Carmelo Anthony. The 6-7 WF has said that his decision to attend college versus head directly to the NBA would hinge in large part on his test score, and he reportedly has now qualified for freshman eligibility. That doesn't mean he won't try the League -- especially with the new rule about declaring and coming back to school -- in place, but it seems more likely that it did a week ago that he'll play at least one year for the Orangemen....'

4/29/02 Coach Gary Charles: I.S. 8 Saturday night on the IS 8 Spring Classic, 2002 page.

4/29/02 Basketball America: 'Brooklyn big man Chris Taft has had plenty of guests during this April's evaluation period. According to recruiting analyst Dave Telep of TheInsidersHoops.com, Villanova, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Syracuse, North Carolina and Georgia Tech have made trips to watch him work out at Xaverian High School. Taft told Telep that he wants to visit UNC, Pitt, 'Nova and Duke.

*** The last of the three St. Anthony Class of 2002 guards made his college decision this week. Donald Copeland, a 5-10 point man from the Jersey City juggernaut, committed Tuesday to Seton Hall. Copeland teamed the last two seasons with fellow backcourt stars Elijah Ingram (St. John's) and DeWayne Lee (St. Joe's) to lead Bob Hurley's Friars to back-to-back Tournament of Champions state titles. Copeland averaged 15 points, six assists and four steals as a senior.'

4/29/02 AAljahla7: 'Congratulation to Coach Tim Cluess and Mamadou Diakhate of St.Mary's and to your coaching staff and players. Let's get another one next year. All the best to you and your families and the other coaches and players on Long Island.'

4/29/02 Newsday: Jason Fraser: Great Player, Even Better Person. I want to make a difference in as many people’s lives as possible.’  And Mamadou Diakhate -- Doing the Work On, Off the Court. It’s real exciting to see a kid try and do so much with his life.’

The 16U won game one on Friday evening 67-45 and won game two on Saturday 60-54. After winning game 3, they lost a heartbreaker by 1 point.'

4/28/02 Newsday: All Long Island Boys Basketball Team.  Tim Cluess and Tom Fitzpatrick -- Coaches of the Year.

4/28/02 Matt Grasso: 'Tonight in one of the most highly anticipated exhibition games ever at IS8 in Jamaica Queens, Brooklyn Bridge took on last summer's #1 team in the country, the Long Island Panthers.'  Details on the IS 8 Spring Classic, 2002 page.

4/27/02 Three years ago a nationally ranked wing forward visited IS8 to play with his buddy, a superstar NYC point guard.  Omar Cook did the passing and Darius Miles lit it up for 38 effortless points.  He joined the ranks of Stephon Marbury, Elton Brand, Wally Szczerbiak, Lamar Odom and others for IS8 fame. Last night LeBron James was in town for a photo shoot with Slam magazine and played at IS8 with his buddy, Sebastian Telfair for the Brooklyn Bridge. It was not deja vu. LeBron must have thought the game was part of the photo op; he scored two points.  'Not what we came to see', was one of Pete Edwards' kinder comments. LeBron gets another chance tonight at IS8 vs the Panthers. More on the IS 8 Spring Classic, 2002 page.

4/27/02 Daily News: Ohio's LeBron James Guarded on Pro Talk.

4/27/02 School Sports: HS Players Can Enter NBA Draft and Retain Eligibility.

4/26/02 ihigh.com: 'Blair Academy (N.J.) forward Loul Deng took a trip to see Duke this past weekend... Donald Copeland took a backseat to Elijah Ingram in his time at St. Anthony’s (N.J.), but he still did enough to warrant a scholarship in the Big East. The senior guard, who averaged 14.3 points, five assists and four steals this season, chose Seton Hall over Providence...  All Hallow (N.Y.) senior sharpshooter Ricky Soliver signed with Iona. Soliver is a streaky shooter who can knock down the 3-pointer when he gets on a roll. He averaged 18 points per game and will join teammates Marvin McCullough and Kiril Wachsmann at Iona...  Quincy Douby, a 6-3 combo guard from Grady High (N.Y.) who committed to Hofstra, isn’t expected to qualify and will instead play a year of prep ball at St. Thomas More (Conn.).'

4/26/02 Brooklyn Scout: 'As an addition to a previous post, Adrian Uter averaged 14 points and 15 rebounds at Springfield Gardens HS this season. He  was also a standout performer at the Big Apple Exposure Games on April 13 at John Jay College, earning selection to the All-Star game in a vote by the  40 coaches in attendance.  Uter joins returning New Yorkers Joe Marino (Holy Cross HS) and Ricardo  Knight (Sheepshead Bay HS) at Broward next season.'

4/26/02 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'Just a quick update to let everybody know about a great guy coach Bob Starkman the head coach at Broward CC. Bob has just signed Adrian Uter the young 6'' 6'' center fom Springfied Gardens H. S. I had a chance to coach Adrian in the City Games and was very impressed with him as a player and as a young man. I recommended him to Coach Starkman, as did Ron Naclerio. And, Bob offered him a scholarship on the spot. Bob has done some great work since taking over as the head coach at BCC and has never forgotten his NYC roots. He is always ready to try and help our kids reach the next level. He also has Nate Daniels, a 6'8" shooting guard who was just named first-team all-american and avg. 31 ppg which was second in the country. If any coach out there has players that need a junior college, please keep Bob Starkman at the top of your list.'

4/22/02  Coach Jim Hart: 'The Albany City Rocks used a stifling man to man defense in the second half to overcome a 32-30 deficit at intermission, en route to an impressive 63-48 victory over the Long Island Panthers in the championship game of Wayne Simones annual Hoop Challenge held this weekend at Yale University. The City Rocks scored 22 of their 63 points on dunks (5 of them by 6 foot 7 soph Dayshaun Wright) in an electrifying second half run to put away an excellent Panther team headed by Charlie Villanueva and Mike Jones. The 6 foot 2 14 year old freshman point guard Emmanuel "Tiki" Mayben had 6 points 10 assists and 2 steals in the final. Mike Beers and Mike Van Schaick each had double figures three times and nailed plenty of big 3's helping the Rocks win 6 games in three days. Will Daniels (so. 4/18/02  CBS Sportsline: 'Michael Nardi. The 6-1 Elizabeth, N.J., product could be even better. It's just that he played only two games this winter for coach Kevin Boyle at St. Patrick High School -- a fractured foot sidelined him beginning in the fall -- and he's still sitting out while rehabbing a subsequent bone bruise in the same foot. "It's been very tough sitting out," Nardi said this weekend while watching his New Jersey Celtics make it to the Weber semifinals. "I mainly want to be back 100 percent for Memorial Day at the Bob Gibbons (Tournament of Champions) and for July." That should happen barring any more setbacks. "As soon as I get back, people better watch out," Nardi said. "That's all I've got to say."

A (long) name to know: Juan Diego Tello Palacios. The 6-8, 240-pound sophomore from Long Island's Our Savior New American School was super in stretches this weekend while playing for the New York Elite, knocking down soft turnaround jumpers, converting jump hooks and showing nimble feet getting up and down the floor and working on the blocks. The kid's huge, and he's going to be very, very good. With rising seniors Konimba Diarra and Oumar Sylla -- Sylla, a 6-6 swingman, already is committed to Valparaiso -- watch for coach Ron Stelzer's Pioneers to be a major player on the high school and prep scene next winter.'

4/15/02 Joe Marino: 'One of the purposes of the wheelchair games are to raise funds for those patients in need of help at Goldwater Hospital. As usual, another great job by Mr. Carter and his staff. I'm sure the majority of those in attendance didn't come to see 20 yr. old Lenny Cooke play against 17 and 18 year olds. If Lenny had been working on his grades when he entered high school, way back when, he would be completing his sophmore year in college next month. Lenny playing in the Wheelchair games is an injustice to all those kids who worked hard on and off the court. Someone else could have showcased their talent to the college coaches. Lenny can't cut the grade at the high school level so what makes one think he can pass in college. Lenny, I hope you learned something from Omar. Keep working on your grades during your short stay in Detroit.'

4/12/02 Love2Ref: 'On Wednesday evening in Brooklyn there were two great charity games at the Long Island University, Brooklyn Campus. I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the officials for the championship game between Brooklyn and the Bronx. This was an opportunity for me to give back something to the game of basketball and at the same time, being surrounded by people who cared for persons less fortunate than themselves. This game was bigger than any one player on the court, and the reason why this game was not like your "regular all-star game" is because there were bragging rights on the line. If there are any regrets that I may have about this game, it is that I did not get a chance to visit the Collier Memorial Hospital and meet some of the patients that will benefit from this event. Hopefully in the future the persons in charge of this event will ask that the officials take part in the visit to the hospital also. Although Brooklyn may have won the championship game, there were no losers on this night. And don't forget on Friday night at The Elmcore Center in Queens, the Girls Wheelchair Classic consolation game and Finals will be played. Come out and show your support this event, and be a winner too!'

4/12/02 Coach Bob Oliva: 'Congratulations to Hank Carter and everyone involved with the Wheelchair Classic.  It's such a great event.  It's New York basketball at its best.  Keep up the good work.'

4/12/02 New Jersey Roadrunners play tonight for the final spot in the Donofrio Classic 2002 quarterfinals.

4/11/02 Web note on Lenny at the Wheelchair game: 'This is a charity game for a good cause. Lenny was probably partially responsible for the good crowd. He's 20 because his grades have not been good. He didn't play hs ball this season because he was working on his grades. You can't have a better reason than that. Traditionally, this has been a 4 borough affair, not a Bronx/Westchester team. But no one bemoans Donnie McGrath suiting up even if Somers isn't in the Bronx.'

4/11/02 Coach Kevin Pigott: 'The Wheelchair Games are truly a "Metropolitan Event." Traditionally non-city players are allowed to participate. I believe the formula is the following: Players from Rockland, Westchester, and Connecticut are put on the Bronx team, Long Islanders play for Queens, New Jersey residents are on the Manhattan team, and Brooklyn gets anyone from Staten Island. They seem to abide by this rule. For example, if Elton Brand was not injured, he would have played on the Bronx team.

I agree with Peter Abraham about Lennie. Yes, he is areat player but he is not a high school player. There were plenty of great players for the crowd to see. I enjoyed seeing how much better Donnie has gotten. Providence will do well by him! There were other high school athletes like Donnie who I got to see for the first time in a long while. This is my opportunity to see the best high school players in the metropolitan area play in one forum for the last time. The McDonald's debacle only increased my appreciation for these games.

Unlike the McDonald's Game, these games were well-played. They had a local high school flavor - "bragging rights were up for grab." The championship game was not played as your typical all-star game, and the crowd seemed to appreciate that fact.

Most of those who attend the Wheelchair Games know that they are a bit different than other all-star games. Most of those who play in it feel the same way. That is one reason why I enjoy them so much. The other reason is the great cause that they serve.'

4/11/02 Coach Ted Gustus: 'As one of the first high school student at the age of 19 years old to play in the Wheelchair Classic, I can only echo your feelings concerning the game. That is why I agreed to have Lenny Cook play. By the way, Lenny actually begged me to let him play after he visited the hospital by himself with Mr. Carter. He really wanted to be a part of a good cause. Throughout the entire event, Lenny would look over to the bench to thank me for letting him be a part of this special cause.

As a basketball community, we often place too much emphasis on the competitive aspects of the game. The game can be use for goodwill. I commend all those who have helped make this game a success. By the way, after 29 years, there are several patients at the hospital who I have watched grow up to become adults. If it wasn't for the Wheelchair Classic, who knows?

Thanks for putting things in its right perspective. We need that at times.'

4/11/02 Matt Grasso: 'I partially agree with what Pete had to say about Lenny. He would be a great player in college but he is two years older than any other player in the game. In my honest opinion, I doubt he'll get drafted in the first round or if he'll be drafted at all. It would be too risky for any NBA team to take a chance. I have a pretty good understanding of Lenny's situation and I do feel bad for him, but he really has messed up. He pretty much has done away with going to college and I wonder what he'll do if he can't play in the NBA. It's really unfortunate how much God given basketball talent he has and how he can't get the job done in the classroom. I only wish the best for Lenny and I hope he succeeds, but looking at his situation right now; his odds aren't looking too favorable. Thanks for letting me express my opinion on this matter.'

4/11/02 The Apple's Best Ballaz: Wheelchair Classic.

4/11/02 Newsday: Lenny Cooke's Silent on His Future.

4/11/02 Peter Abraham, The Journal News: ' Brooklyn beat the Bronx 111-106 in the championship game of the Wheelchair Classic at LIU on Wednesday. Good crowd, great cause. Brooklyn, up 48-46 at halftime, went up by as many as 15 at 69-54 before Bronx stormed back with its second unit. A Donnie McGrath 3-ponter cut the lead to 91-90 before Brooklyn pulled away. MVP Curtis Sumpter had 22 for Brooklyn, Gary Ervin added 19. I thought Amadou Fall was great with 12 points on tough work inside. The Bronx got big help from Westchester guys McGrath (14 points, 5 flashy assists) and hard-working Jomo Belfor of Mount Vernon (11 points, 6 rebounds). Allen Ray was terrific with 23 and really seems to have his game back. Taliek Norman added 15. McGrath and Ray played smoothly together.

The difference in the game was Lenny Cooke scoring 29 points for Brooklyn. I lost count of his rebounds and blocks. At least 12 and 5. Lenny's fun to watch (he would be a great college 3-man) but why was on the floor? He's 20 years old and lives in Michigan. This was a h.s. all-star game. Shouldn't you at least have to play in h.s. to qualify? It wasn't fair to have a man playing among boys.'

4/9/02 Dassoc: 'The Westchester Hawks AAU 16u team was up in Providence Rhode Island playing in the HoopGroups Slam Fest. It was the first tourney for the Hawks this season. There were 56 teams in the 16u division. The Hawks went 5-1 and made it to the finals losing to the Tim Thomas Playaz by 4. Hawks played the Bang, Metro, Gauchos, S.I. Lightnening, CT Flame and the TT Playaz. Excellent team effort this weekend by Quentin Martin, Dave McClure, Taj Finger, Frank Ward, Nick Friedman, Chris Diasparra, Mike Devere, Leon Hill, Ron Miles, Jason Holmes, True Lipscomb, Brett Loscalzo.'

4/9/02 Coach John Lanza: 'Staten Island Lightning 16 and U. Looks to make noise this season after being in the shadow of the 15 and U team for a few years. They have a strong inside presence for the first time led by 6'8'' center James Furlong (Xaverian) and 6'2'' forward Andy Louison (St. Edmunds). The backcourt is solid with PG Brian Ameneiros (Xaverian), who showcased his sharp shooting in the JV City Championship this season. He is surrounded by Charles Parker (Poly Prep) and Larry Frawley (Msgr. Farrell), two hardnosed guards who play the game the way it is meant to be played. A mix of Staten Island and Brooklyn players fill the bench for the Lightning as they hope to earn a trip to the AAU Nationals for the first time.

Providence Scores -- SI Lightning 49, Wilkes Barre Tarheels 37.  SI Lightning 62, Jersey City Boys Club 49.  SI Lightning 66, LI Lightning 59.  SI Lightning 49, Westchester Hawks (Tourney Finalist) 67.  Made quarterfinals, finished in top 8 of 48 teams.  Strong Weekends from Andy Louison, James Furlong, Charles Parker, Chris Lopez, Larry Frawley, Brian Ameneiros and Kareem McQuilkin.'

4/8/02 Weekend results and summaries on the PRO STYLE 2K 2, Winter League Basketball page.

4/8/02 Coach John Lanza: 'Yes, The S.I. Lightning won the 15u championship in Rhode Island. They had wins over the Bronx Kings 72-35, Conn. North Stars 53-47, M.S.U. Skyliners 68-47, Bayshore 60-57, Bronx Gauchos 64-59, & the championship game was Ct. Flame 66-57. Point guard Kyle Mc Clarny (Moore) showed everyone this weekend he is one of the best in the city. His best games were against Bayshore & the Gauchos where he controlled the tempo. He had 15 pts 8 assists (Bayshore) and 16 pts 9 assists (Gauchos.)  Doug Elwell (Farrell) had a monster weekend. Doug was a huge defensive presence for the undersized Lightning. He had double figure rebounding in every game. He had 15 pts (Gauchos) and 19 pts (North Stars) and was a huge presence in the backcourt when Mc Clarney was hurt in the championship game. Frank Messina ( Tottenville) was the leading scorer for the Lightning up until he was injured in the Gauchos game. He was in double figures every game with a high of 19 against M.S.U. Skyliners and 15 (Bayshore). Ramsey Hill (New Dorp) had 11 treys for the weekend with his biggest game against the Gauchos when he finished with 21 pts. Tom Downing (Curtis) and Paul Anderson (Poly Prep) were the heroes in the championship game against Ct. Flame. Anderson had 25 pts 9 rbds (9-11 FT) and Downing 22 pts. 9 rbds 7-7 (Ft) in 2nd half. Also got solid bench contributions from Mike Albertson (Farrel), Chris Baldasano (Farrell) and Rob Bates (Curtis).

4/8/02 Coach Eric "Rock" Eisenberg- ' I want to be the first person to suggest that the coaches for next years east team in the McDonald's All-Ameican Game should be coach Maurice Hicks of state champion Rice High School and Coach Jack Ringel, the coach of the three time city champion and one time state champion Grady Falcons. Yes, I am a friend of these two fine coaches, but, that being said, I still feel that they are among the best and brightest game and practice coaches in the country on the high school level. They both help to place almost all of their graduating seniors in college and continue to be active parts of their player's lives forever. I'm sure there are other great coaches out there deserving of this honor, but these two coaches get my vote.'

The semi finals was versus Le pau from France and after a tight first half Riverside led by 7. In the second half we opened it up and won 94-66. Keydren Clark was on fire as he hit 8/9 from three point range(in Europe the line is a foot back from here) including 6 for 6 in the first half. In the 2nd half they went box and one on him and Ricky Soliver hit 4 for 4 from three. Both players hit for 26 pts. Curtis Sumpter added 10. Jason Wingate pulled a Jason Kidd act by not scoring but handing out 14 assists. The Championship was a rematch against Chalon/Salone and after the 1st quarter Riverside trailed by eight but we came to life and by half we led by 7. Aslo Ricky Soliver won the three point shooting contest and Shamar Greene was third in the slam dunk contest. 4/6/02 Terrier45 (The Prime): 'I know Curtis Sumpter and the rest of the CHSSA guys are upset about no selections for the McDonald's all American Game, I am too. I played varsity basketball for SFP and know these guys deserve their spot on that team especially with the game in NYC. Yet people also forget about the talent the CHSSA has next year with guys like Chris Taft, Shagari Alleyne, Marlon Smith etc. Next year the CHSSA could have at least three guys going to the Mc D All American game.

Plus, Sumpter's a great player, but no one made any noise when Rashard Bell won the B/Q CHSSA MVP,lead the city in scoring, dropped 52 on Molloy and got his team with in one call of the city semifinals was not picked for the game last year.'

4/1/02  JSHUTTLESWURTH: 'Playaz Spring Fling In the championship game the Tim Thomas Playaz won their own tournament in workman fashion over Baltimore Blue 83-69. The first half was up and down and two things that had the Playaz up 43-35 were 4 techs called on Baltimore Blue and the hot hand of J.R. Smith. Smith, a junior from Lakewood, NJ, who is known widely in Jersey for basketball and football, he is even more of a national name on the gridiron as a wide reciever. But after today's first half he looked like he could make a national name in both sports. He hit 5 threes and all but one came from NBA distance. He ended the half with 15 points on the way to a total of 17 for the game. Then the second half the Playaz held on with the superb plays of juniors Sean Banks and Darryl Watkins. Sean hit 3 threes and a couple of nice moves to the basket for 12 second half points and 18 overall for the game. Watkins wasn't so much of an offensive presence but he dominated the game with his defense finishing the game with 11 blocks 7 alone in the second half and altering shots throughtout the game. The play of the game came courtesy of Juwan Richardson from Baltimore Blue. He stands at 5'10 and with time running out he cut between 2 defenders threw the ball off the backboard and cocked the ball back with two hands and dunked it. The crowd was more then pleased. All tournament team consisted of Ronando Dickerson and Juwan Richardson from Baltimore Blue, Jamar Nutter, Marquisse Webb  and J.R. Smith from the Playaz. The MVP was Sean Banks who finished up the tourney averaging 22 points.'
