6/25/02 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'I wanted to mention the fine play of 6' 1'' class of 2003 point guard Nathaniel Sudlow This kid is probably the best kept sceret in the P.S.A.L..Nate is a solid 85 student in advanced classes at Tilden and he is a high class person and can become a real good D1 P.G. He was our M.V.P. in the Hofstra camp and was our leading scorer in the Villanova camp last weekend. Someone is going to look very smart when they start recruiting this fine young man.'
6/25/02 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'I wanted to tell everyone on the site that I am now the new Head Boys Basketball Coach at South Shore H. S.Long time South Shore coach Bobby Sherman has retired and I am proud to have been chosen to replace this coaching legend.I will do my best to build on the tradition of excellence that coach Sherman established on and off the court at South Shore H.S.Also good luck to Coach Jeff Schrier who returns to Tilden H.S. as Boys Head Basketball Coach after a 6 month absence Go Blue Devils I will always be your biggest fan.'
6/25/02 Craighton Barry: 'Most of us who regularly visit this site are die hard supporters of sports in general and HS basketball in particular. As a parent first and a basketball official second. I am going to take this forum to express one of my biggest criticisms of the NYC high school basketball player. That criticism would be that unlike young atheletes from other parts of the country. Our kids (NYC) rarely cross-train. When I say cross-train I specifically mean play other sports that can and will help them in basketball. I have seen many ball players come and go through the gauntlet of NYC hoops. Lets face it everybody cannot be a marquis player like Rod Strick or Kenny Anderson just to name a few. However; exposure to other sports allows you to work different muscles and build other skill sets that can and will help you stand out on the basketball court. When I am officiating a game I can almost instantly pick out the kid who plays another sport in addition to B-ball. These kids bring a natural tenacity to the game of basketball that allows them to be instantly effective to helping their team win. They may not be droping 20 or 30 but they are hitting the boards or playing D with Passion. I hope you get my point. On July 3rd there will be an all-star High School football game in Long Island. NYC will be challenging Long Island. Some of the NYC players are actually dual sport kids that you may have seen but once again they are not basketball "Headliners". If you have a chance come out and see the game, the series is tied 2-2. NYC is not only for hoop dreams. Many college recruiters are coming to our city and are finding diamonds in the rough. The classic is called the Empire Outback Bowl and it is sponsored by NY native Boomer Esiason.(NFL QB).'
6/25/02 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'Just a little note to tell you and the rest of the faithful that Villanova U. ran a super team camp last weekend . Everything was first class and our Brooklyn Blue Devils had a great time and really came away impressed with the teams that we played against. However of more importance to me was the way all the players got along and competed without anger. It was great to see players from 10 different schools all enjoying each others company off the court and competing so hard on the court. This is a tribute to the Villanova staff for creating such a positive environment for us all to be in.Big Up to Andre King our M.V.P.and ''OC'' our Hardest Worker.
Thanks to coach Wright and the whole Villanova Basketball Family.'

6/18/02 nickandabby: 'Hello, I wanted to let you know that the information that you posted concerning Derrick Caracter attending Scotch Plains-Fanwood high school is incorrect. 6/18/02 Terence Johnson (tbone): 'Its official, Scotch Plains of New Jersey has the top incoming 9th grader in the conference next year. This kid has the potential to be an all county player by his sophomore season. He can dribble, pass, block shots and finish under the basket. Already, he's turning heads with his jumping ability. Many thought this kid was going to go to a local parochial power, but NO, he's heading to Scotch Plains Hs in NJ. Let me tell you, Lance Thomas is going to get it done. Oh yeah, you heard me right, Lance Thomas!. Lance gets outshined in Scotch Plains because of manchild Derrick Caracter, but the 6'4 2006 player can and will hold his own on the varsity level this year. If it was any other year, everyone would have known about Lamar, but when you're overshadowed by a player like Caracter you should understand. Lance will take his lumps due to his frame, but has the tools to be a pretty nice player in the long run. Is "DC" far behind? Keep up with the latest happenings in the Watchung Conference, the toughest conference in NJ!'

6/18/02 Shagari Alleyne is the 7-3 Rice senior center who played for the 17 under Gauchos team at the Rumble this weekend. He was kind enough to let me take this picture and I'm pleased enough with the way it came out, except that it looks as if I posed Shagari between a couple of eight footers. Not true. Check the June, 2002 pictures for another view. |
6/18/02 Weekend results on the UDC, 2002 page.
6/18/02 Keith Mason, The Apple's Best Ballaz: 'The last piece of the most in depth report on the Rumble in the Bronx has been added, the 16u summary can be found on the Rumble summary page.'
6/18/02 RutgersInsider: J.R. Smith (WR, 6'5"-205lbs, 4.5) Lakewood H.S. and Gary Ervin rumbles.
6/18/02 Eric Jaklitsch: 'The legend continues. Juan Diego Tello Pallacious has shattered his second backboard of the season. This past weekend in Maryland at the Ocean City Classic, Tello caught a pass from DJ Fields, took off and landed one of the nasty dunks I have ever seen, shattering the backboard. The crowd erupted, everybody in the building stopped to see what happened. Early in the year, Tello shattered a back board at Our Savior in a game against Solebury Prep. By the way, Pallacious took home MVP honors and the NY Elite won the tournament. Next up for the NY Elite is the Charlie Weber Penn St. tournament, then a very busy July.'
6/18/02 Nathan Blue: 'I didn't wanna let everyone know just yet. But the NCAA has told me that my event along with that of Tom "Tippy" McTernan, Big Apple Sports, has been sanctioned. The event will take place on the last day of the college evaluation period July 31st. Which means this is the last day a D1 school can watch a player. Until that player goes back to High School.
The first game will feature the top 24 high school players in the NY area. While the second will have the top Juco returning soph's in the area. Here's a run down of the players who have a shot at making one of the two teams in the High school game. Gary Ervin, Sebastian Telfair, Chris Taft, Charlie Villanueva, Shagri Alleyne, Peter Ramos, Quincey Doubie, Diego Aguira, Elijah Clarke, Ramel Bradley, Gary Forbes, Sundiata Gaines, Sammy Mejia, Lamont Hamilton, Joshua Wright, Louie McCroskey, Daon Merrit, Willie Irick, Kirk Bunn, Curtis Stinson, Dayshawn Wright, Sean Banks, Dereck Caracter, Mitxhell Beauford, Japhette McNeil, Antionio Pena, Luis Rodrigues, Kojo Mensah, Oumar Sylla, Mike Nardi, Juan Diego Tellos Palacios, Terell Biggs, Auturo Dubois, Al Forbes, Courtney Johnson, Camron Tyler, Will Harris, Dontae Mullighan, James Barrett, Jamel Lynch, Ed Barrios, Garfield John, Elton Barry, Tyshawn Bierria, Mark Arrington, Curtis Kelly, Russell Robnson, Ronald Ramon, Vic Morris, and Shale Keating.
While the Juco list is still being made. So far it's players like Tommy Eddie, Carl Lee, Kevin Bell, Anthony Laylor, and many other returning juco sophs. Game times are scheduled for 5pm (HS) 7pm (JUCO) All of the players coaches and guardians will be contacted. We expect to have a realgood list of who's playing in the game very soon. So if you're on this list be expected to be contacted soon. If you get passed over (especially younger players) don't stress it. You gotta pay your dues. But I will be picking the best 23 players regardless of class. Any questions email me at rsbisthenyc@webtv.net.'
6/17/02 delavangrider: 'Just a thought, why is it that upstate New York gets looked over in the basketball community? This past weekend the GC Ballers of Buffalo, NY put on a show in the Rumble in the Bronx in both the 17 & 16 divisions. In the 16 under they competed with their 15 under team and went 3-0 in pool play before running up on a good Westchester team. GC was led by 15 year old Paul Harris and Darnell Kimble. Our 17 under squad came in second in their pool and just ripped through the Silver division. They were led by one of the best guards in the class of 2003, Dominic Bishop. If you check the scorecards he had 33 pts. back to back and Dawan Stroud just demolished the City Rocks but nobody noticed. Corey Herring was a monster on both parts of the floor he truly worked on his outside game. I'm not saying Tiki is not good but give our kids some respect. We should be ranked in the nation.' Web note: More on the Rumble in the Bronx page.
6/17/02 Dateline Basketball America: Telfair defends Big Apple turf, rips Tiki and the Rocks.
6/17/02 Keith Mason, The Apple's Best Ballaz: 'More Rumble player evaluations added and player rankings from the event.
6/17/02 JSHUTTLESWURTH observations on the Rumble in the Bronx page.

6/17/02 Keith Mason, The Apple's Best Ballaz: 'Rumble in the Bronx report - Summary of the event and player evaluations. More to be added for both later on today.'
6/16/02 Once again the Church wins on a Sunday. The Riverside Church Hawks take the 17 under Rumble championship with two mercy wins, 72 - 57 in the semis over the Long Island Panthers and 78 -55 in the championship game against Florida's Team Breakdown, who did just that after only trailing 43 - 38 at the half. Gary Ervin had 22 and Gary Forbes and Willie Irick each scored 12 in the final game. Forbes led with 17 against the Panthers as Willie (16), Quincy Douby (13) and Kelvin Peedy Nelson (12) each contributed to the semi's romp.
In the 16 under championship game the Westchester Hawks trailed Philadelphia's MJC 6 - 2 before running off 15 unanswered points and then hanging on for a 48 - 47 lead at the half. It was tied at 62 before the JMC decisive run gave them a deceptively easy 84 - 70 win. Hoop Scoop currently has JMC's 6-6 center Shane Clark ranked as the # 5 soph in Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and their 5-10 point guard, Kyle Lowry # 12. Don't tell that to the Hawks. Lowry dropped 30, got to all the loose balls and may have outrebounded his own center as Clark scored 16. The Hawks' star Dave McClure had 25 while Taj Finger, Quentin Martin and Chris Diasparra had 14, 11 and 10. JMC made it to the finals by outracing the favored Riverside Hawks in the semis 68 - 61. Arturo Dubois had 22 for the Hawks but Terrell Biggs and Derrick Caracter were each held to 8.
In the 17 under silver game the City Rocks led Buffalo's CG Ballers 37 - 33 at the half before the roof feel in and GCB got the mercy win 77 - 57.
6/16/02 Rock Eisenburg: 'I neglected to mention that 6'1' Junior pg Nathaniel Sudlow was voted our M.V.P. and 6'2'' combo guard John King was selected as our hardest worker at the Hofstra team camp. The Brooklyn Blue Devils will join the Brooklyn Lions and the Brooklyn Falcons at Coach Jay Wright's Villanova team camp this weekend . Our players learned so much at the Hofstra camp that I am looking ahead to another super experience for the Blue Devils.'
6/16/02 Coach Rodrick Bussey: 'The Brooklyn Queens Warriors 17 and under team just completed a weekend tournament at Fairleigh Dickinson University. The name of the tournament was the Garden State Slamfest III and it was hosted by Bob Cerrato. The Brooklyn-Queens Warriors didn't fare that well at the tournament (1 win, 2 losses), but we did have several standout players. Marques Damon (10th grader from LaSalle Academy), Rik Singh (11th grader from Hillcrest) and Chris Aquirre (12th grader from Edison who will be attending Steven's Institute in Hobeken, NJ in the fall) did an excellent job over the weekend. The Warriors will be competing in the Kenny Anderson Classic starting 6/24.'
6/16/02 Keith Mason, The Apple's Best Ballaz: ' Rumble Notes. Also if you get this in time make sure you are at the 9:20 games which most likely will feature a matchup of what I consider the two best players in the 2004 class, Sebastian Telfair and Darius Washington. Both were ABCD all-stars last year, both made a name for themselves at the camp and both scored over 30 in their last game at the Rumble on Saturday, 32 for Sebastian and 33 for Darius, so look for a classic match-up.'
6/16/02 NJ Hoops: Playaz fall to Breakdown.

6/16/02 Sebastian Telfair and the Juice All
Stars were juiced this afternoon and they rocked the Albany City Rocks with
a wire to wire 95 - 59 mercy win (called with at least a 20 point lead
and three minutes to go) at the Rumble. Sebastian did it all. His
outside shot was dead-on and he drove to the basket at will, either finishing
or dishing to a teammate. The Juice played a doubling zone and Bassie
had numerous steals as the Juice 'D' held a tentative Tiki Mayben
to just two points. Ramel Bradley and Chris Taft had 20 and
16 in the Juice effort while only Rashaun Freeman with 20 was able
to do much damage for the Rocks. The Bridge got an earlier mercy win
against a solid St Michael's team 80 - 59 as the Bridge trio of
Sebastian (16), Chris Taft (15) and Elliah Clarke (15)
got more help from their teammates than did St Mike's Brad Forcastierl
(16), Gary Ebinko (14) and Shlam Martinez (13).

6/15/02 A NY Raven note from coach Gerald Brown: 'Francisco Garcia is fully qualified and he will be playing for Louisviille next season.'
6/15/02 Coach Ted Gustus: '6'2 guard, Courtney Johnson was voted team MVP and 6'1 guard Kojo Mensah was voted team hardest worker, as the Brooklyn Lions went 7-0 at the Hofstra University Team Basketball Camp. In addition, 6'5 Kirk Bunn and 5'9 Andrew Wright contributed as high scorers for the Lions. The Brooklyn Lions will be playing in the Villanova University Team camp Friday & Saturday, June 21st and 22nd.'
Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'Just a little note to let you know that Tilden H.S.went 2/5 in the Hofstra team camp. We played against some great comp. All of our players are starting to understand what it takes to have the heart of a champion! Our highlights were wins over West Hempstead and Northport and a tough 1 point loss to Holy Cross. Thanks to the Hofstra B Ball family for having us at this super event.'

6/15/02 Emanuel (Tiki) Mayben is the 6-2 Troy high school freshman and 15 year old Albany City Rocks' 17 under point guard who looked relaxed last night before his first round game at the Rumble in the Bronx. Hoop Scoop has anointed Tiki # 1 for the class of 2005 but he and his teammates had all the could handle against a disciplined St Michaels, NJ squad. They prevailed for a single digit victory on court four at the same time that Sebastian Telfair and the Juice All Stars were drubbing Lancaster Elite on the adjacent court three. Sebastian is the nationally ranked # 1 from the class of 2004. He arrived at halftime (Brooklyn kids tend to get lost in the Bronx, Bronx kids tend to get lost in Brooklyn). Tiki and Bassie will be facing one another on court one at 1:20 tomorrow afternoon More info on the Rumble in the Bronx page. |

The Wildcat team that participated in the camp consisted of members from the 15/16/and 17U NJ Wildcat squads. The camp was a valuable experience and gave the players a taste of what college basketball and preparation will be like. The team performed well and played competitive basketball. The highlight of their weekend was an upset victory over St. Anthony's HS on Sunday. Players that attended the camp from the Wildcats team were Mike Luzzi (So. Morris Catholic HS), Everett Morgan (Jr. Laurinberg Inst. NC), Greg Lewis (So. Solebury Prep), Eric Bynes (Jr. New Brunswick HS), Dwayne Jarrett (So. New Brunswick HS), Tyler Jenkins (Jr. Rutgers Prep), Llamar Brockington (Jr. Edison HS), and Johnathan Jones (Jr. Monmouth Regional HS). 6/10/02 Ted Gustus on the state of basketball.
6/9/02 The Gauchos led the Church by 25 after the first quarter, 40 - 25 and coasted to a 102 - 75 victory this afternoon at the Gauchos/SUBOA tournament as Rice's freshman lefty point guard, Jerrell Mills scored 23 to take home the tournament MVP award. He had a lot of help from Junior Mitchell (13), H Allen (14), Stephen Walker (10) and Joseph Vines (11). Only the Church's Goeff Rizk with 23 (five treys) was able to provide much opposition. The Church got to the finals with a 44 - 20 forfeit win over SONDAY Express after their coach, Doug Jones was ejected after two technical fouls. It was, after all, a referee clinic tournament.
6/9/02 The Ct. team was a no-show yesterday at the Gauchos' tournament. The Gauchos played with split squad and each team played three games. SONDAY Express is playing the Church today at noon for the right to played the 'chos best in the championship game at 3:30. 6/9/02 Peter F. Edwards - IS8: 'I agree totally that nothing was accomplished at the State Of Basketball meeting. The agenda didn't resolve any issues. In order for there to be any uniformity the top organizations who receive all the sponsorship must police themselves 1st. How many organizations that can't take a child on a trip, give a pair of sneakers, etc., are corrupt? They are the 1's that have their players stolen on a regular basis. Until the playing field is level there will never be any reforms but unfortunately that's life!' Earlier comments on the state of basketball.
6/9/02 Newsday: Violation Of Trust. When young athletes are sex-abuse victims, their coaches are often the culprits.
6/9/02 Jerry Moore: 'Saturday night @ The War in the Woods, the NY Gauchos 17/u took on the 16/ Phila Patriots. This may have been the game of the weekend as Philadelphia's 5-11 rising Jr. (Penn Charter HS) Sean Singletary took on 5-10 Marlon Smith from Archbishop Molly. Singletary's stock is rapidly rising! He totally outplayed a highly ranked rising senior in Marlon Smith. Singletary with his lighting quickness, slick ball handling, and super athletic ability scored on Smith and he also made him turn the ball over many times. He blew by Smith and penetrated deep into the Gaucho's defense to collect numerous assists. He did this in front of the renowned talent evaluators as in Allen Rubin and Norm Eavenson. Singletary finished with 13 points 9 assist 7 rebounds and 6 steals. He is a legit tp 5 point guard in 2004. If he becomes more consistent, his atheletic ability and ball handling skills could separate him from all the guards in 2004 in the country! He is beginning to create his own shot, and he defense and hustle is to be admired. I think Sebastian Telfair is the best PG in the country regardless of class and Singletary is closing the gap quickly!
Smith led his Gauchos with 12 points 4 assist and Charron Fisher dropped in 15 points had 8 rebounds for the Patriots. The Patriots won 62-48 as they advance to the semifinals out of pool play.' Web note: As of last October Hoop Scoop's Allen Rubin had Singletary ranked 6th for his class in Pennsylvania, south Jersey with 5-10 point guard Rich Cunningham from Neuman ranked # 3. USA Today lists Cunningham and Sebastian among their top ten in the class of 2004 nationally, but they don't mention Singletary. Marlon is now ranked 19th in the High Hoops class of 2003.

6/5/02 Daily News: Hoop Summit Meetings Tip Off.: Coaches from some of the top high school teams and AAU coaches gathered at Brooklyn College last night and took steps to put structure in the city's hoop scene.
There was a consensus among the city's major AAU programs, including Riverside Church, the Gauchos, the Bronx Ravens, the Broncos, the Express and Long Island Panthers, to not take junior players out of the city during SAT or ACT weekends. Instead, they will work to put together a tourney in the city on those weekends.
The group also decided to gather again to discuss subjects such as placing a moratorium on recruiting players from each other's teams.
Most coaches and parents left a bit surprised by the meeting. "I told my assistant if it got negative we were leaving," said Rice coach Maurice Hicks. "It stayed positive and let's hope it can work." Web nore: Earlier stories on the state of basketball.

6/3/02 smadden: 'Sam Rines' Hoop Fest 3 Basketball Tournament was held at the Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. this past weekend. The 17 U title was won by Championship Sports, led by 6'4 jr Dustin Salibury (23ppg), 6'0 jr Maurice Madden (19ppg), 6'1 sr Joel Perez (18ppg). ChampSports defeated Team ROC from Harlem NYC in pool play 68-66, and again for the championship 103-99in 2OT. 6'7 Kemar Smith from Schenectady NY played a strong game for Team ROC.
Team ROC was very athletic and tall with five players over 6'4, and a dynamite little PG whose name I didn't get. They fought back through a lot of adversity. At one pont the refs tried to forfiet the game due to a disagreement with the ROC coaches over a technical being called. The game was called with ChampSports leading 49-38 with 13 minutes remaining. Order was restored, two new refs were brought in and the game continued with Championship Sports prevailing in 2-OT 103-99.'

6/3/02 Ray Arnold is the 5-11 freshman Millenium
star and he led his Midget team to a double digit victory today over Next
Level at the S.O.N.D.A.Y. Express, Spring Classic. We'll be updating the
class of 2005 profiles this week and this will be part of Ray's
evaluation: 5/02 JPM 'Ray's an explosive two guard
who many thought would be playing at Christ the King this year. He's
at Bayside. He's a good scorer, defender and passes well (perhaps well enough
to eventually move to the point). Ray is a streaky shooter who used
to play for the Springfield Rifles but is now playing for Artie Cox
and the SONDAY Express.'
The rosters have been updated for coaches and players and yesterday's results are on the S.O.N.D.A.Y. Express Spring Classic page. |

6/1/02 Stan Parker (left) and Russ
Hogsett (right) were the refs for all four games at today's SONDAY Express
Classic. They took time out between games to pose with Marcus Cox,
the long time fan and supporter of NYC refs. Apparently there is no
truth to the rumor that Mr. Cox will be getting a lifetime achievement
award from SUBOA at their annual dinner later this month, which may have
something to do with the mischievous gleam in his eye caught in this
picture.
On the court there were four Midget games this Saturday at SONDAY. The summaries are on the S.O.N.D.A.Y. Express Spring Classic page. Tomorrow's schedule has been changed to three games starting at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00. |

6/1/02 InsidersHoops: USA Basketball Junior World Championship Qualifying Team tryouts Begin including Shagari Alleyne, Terrence Roberts, Sebastian Telfair and Darryl Watkins.
6/1/02 HoopScoop Visitors: 'I want to know how anybody can take somebody other than Dajuan Wagner #1 in this draft? He's the only player in the draft who has a chance to be a truly special player down the road. As a matter of fact, I think he'll be a better pro player than he was a high school or college player. I also think people will get a chance to see what a great passer Wagner is once he's gets a chance to play with great players and isn't forced to do too much all by himself. Wagner also is a lot tougher right now than Ming is inside.'
6/1/02 Keith Mason: 'The Queens RimRockers are holding tryouts on Saturday June 1st for their 18u team at 12:30 pm. All players are welcome to tryout, directions are available on www.QueensRimrockers.com.'
