9/30/02 John P. Micviotta with Sunday update the IS8 Nike Tip-off Classic, 2002 page

9/30/02 Rodrick C. Bussey, Brooklyn-Queens Warriors (Scholars Through Sports Foundation): 'Three of my players Michael Dodd, Edison, Marques Damon, Banneker, and Carlton Deen, Lane, have participated in 2 Hoop Group events: And 1 Jamfest and the Top 100 BB clinic the last two weekends at Seton Hall University. Even though BQ Warriors didn't fare well at the And 1 Jamfest, Michael and Marques did distinguish themselves on the court. Michael averaged 22 ppg including a 34 point explosion against the New Jersey TrailBlazers and Marques averaged 14 ppg including an 18 point second half performance against the Queens Pythons at the And 1 Jamfest. Both young men have to work hard to improve to their overall (defensive) game. I expect all 3 players to continue working hard and to be top players for their respective teams. Marques and Michael are just juniors.'

9/26/02  The P.S.A.L. and C.H.S.A.A. have both done a wonderful and professional job this week of presenting their players to Division II and III coaches.  Exposure Week is for the players like Stedford McLeod (right), Gompers' 6-4 senior forward, but it's made possible by the combined efforts and skill of administrators, coaches and officials like the ones on the left who were at Riverbank tonight. Many refs were waiting for their turn, but others had finished their games and were still there, talking basketball, being fans.  My special thanks and congratulations to coaches Pat Torney, Rock Eisenberg, Ron Naclerio and  Kevin Pigott, to Riverbank's Travis Berry and to Rich Kosik and Tom Konchalski.

9/5/02 Newsday: Quincy Douby Makes Commitment To Rutgers.

9/5/02 MSG: Gary DeCesare moving on to Richmond.

9/4/02 John Koegel: 'I'm sorry, but to say Quincy Douby "did not qualify" at Hofstra does not tell the whole story. He weaseled out of his early commitment after thinking he could do better elsewhere. Hofstra is better off without him.'

9/4/02 Wayne Banner: 'I want to wish Coach Gary DeCesare and his family the very best on their new lives in Richmond, Va. This is a very well earned opportunity for Coach DeCesare and I know he will do great things at the NCAA level. He has influenced and help so many student/athletics in the NYC basketball community, that his mark will always be remembered! Again, Congratulations, good luck in the college ranks and thank you!'

9/4/02 Coach Ted Gustus: 'It Takes A Villiage To Raise A Child... This phase definitely applies to Mr. Phil Hayes, Sr. (Doc, GM) who died on Monday, September 2, 2002. Yes, the basketball community has lost another one of their great basketball minds and a super person. Mr. Hayes, known by many as Doc and/or GM, has touched the lives of thousands of young men throughout the Brooklyn community. He has personally been a father to me for 30 years. For those who didn't get the opportunity to meet Mr. Hayes, just ask those who he has helped in some special way, such as Robert Phelps (Nazareth), John Salley (Canarsie), Rolando Blackman (Grady), Duane Martin (FDR), Tommy Allen (Canarsie), Buddy Keaton (SUBOA officials), Mike Levine (Sheepshead Bay), and literally hundreds of others. Mr. Hayes and his wife (Cyrilla) truly exemplified the spirit of the phase: "It Takes A Villiage To Raise A Child!"  They helped raise alot of children. The funeral services for this great man will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2002 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, located at 241-45 Gates Avenue Between Franklin Ave. & Classon Ave. The viewing is 9A.M., funeral service is 10A.M. For additional information contact coach Gustus at: (718) 485-2719.'

9/4/02 Brooklyn Scout: 'Quincy Douby, who led all New York City players in scoring last season, has  made a verbal commitment to Rutgers for the 2003-04 season. The 6-3 native of Coney Island in Brooklyn (NY) had originally signed with  Hofstra in the fall of 2001 but did not qualify and will be doing a prep  year at Oakdale (CT) St. Thomas More. Douby, a member of Grady's 2000-01 PSAL champions, led the Falcons back to the semifinals last season averaging 35 ppg. Among his top performances were scoring outbursts of 64 (16 three-pointers) and 63 (an amazing 18-of-21  beyond the arc) points that rank among the nation's top five marks for  2001-02.  He was named first team All-City by all three New York City newspapers last  season and is widely considered one of the best prep shooters in the nation  and one of the best ever to come out of New York City.'

9/4/02 RutgersInsiders: Douby Does.

9/3/02 Antonio Cannon, Sr: 'I want to take this time to thank several people for their support: Rob Diaz (Running Hustlers), Nate Blue (Real Scout) & Mitch Eisner (Running Rebels) for their kind words, and support of my efforts to elevate the Kenny Anderson Classic, as a major player on the NYC summer basketball scene! In addition, I would like to thank Dennis Cronin (NYCNJHOOPS), DJBrown (Sports Visions) & Brian Towey (Rivals Hoops), for spending time with us, and spreading the news about The K.A. Classic. I would like to thank Lou Benson (Elmcor Louis Armstrong Center), for allowing the K.A. the use of the facility as a rain site. To the head referee Claude Steeny, and his team of referees who always get a hard way to go from the fans, coaches, and players alike! Great Job! In closing, I would like to thank the seventy teams/organizaions, who chose us for their summer basketball experience. The K.A. Staff: Mr. Al Blake, for honoring all my requests, (new fiberglass backboard system, electronic scoreboard, etc.) Allie & Big Baby for holding down the scoring table and putting up with all the abuse that comes with that job! Malcolm, who did whatever necessary to assure things were on track, Carol (T-Momma) for holding down the gate only allowing the players and coaches to enter the court! My partner Keith the K in T.K. Allstars, for putting up with me, and all the challenges laid in front of him. Love you guys, can't wait until next summer (smile). Oh, how could I forget, the fans who shook to gates and yelled, on every crossover move, dunk, three pointer or block shot! To the tenants of Lefrak City that put up with the whistles and noise from June to August, we appreciate you and your tolerance! Wise and Black for their play by play commentating and comic relief on the mike! To Ira Sport & Goods, for the great job they did, with the uniforms & trophies for the Kenny Anderson Classic!'

9/3/02 Coach Roberto Diaz: 'I would like to take the time to thank Antonio Cannon, Sr., the successful job performed directing the Kenny Anderson Summer Classic 2002, bringing together teams from all over the city as well as the Island in various age brackets. We were pleased to have our basketball component "Runnin' Hustlers Basketball Program" take part in such a great tournament. In the same token, I want to congratulate Mr. Cannon for his recent accomplishment taking his 13u T. K. All-Stars team to conquer another 13u Division Championship at KA. defeating the talented, young & undefeated Team Next.'

Bradley, who prefers the name "Smooth," wanted to increase his exposure down South.

9/2/02 Nathan Blue: 'Saturday night my team Real Scout (Formerly Rimockers) lost to the other RSB (Rock Steady Beacon) by one point. The players who played in the game for Rock Steady Beacon were Gary Ervin, Shamar Green, Gary Forbes, James Barrett, Petey Nelson, Antonio Pena and many more.  On my team was Charlie Villanueva, Wesley Mathews, Mihkal Malik, Phil Murphy, William Harris, Miguel Gonzales, Tyshawn Bierria, Justin Marshall, Brian Laing, Eugene Harvey and Sean Banks.  But a couple of players didn't show plus the fact Rock Steady played 1pt better. I'd like to thank Antonio Cannon and his Kenny Anderson crew for running a nice season. I hope more teams will enter the tourney next year.

Mr. Cannon is very flexible when it comes to scheduling games and I have a real good feeling that you better send him those emails now. Or you won't have a spot next year.'
