10/30/02 Hooptown: Shagari Alleyne -- "Taking His Game To Rugters Next Fall".
10/30/02 Lonnie Webb: My hat goes off to Shagari Alleyne and his coach Maurice Hicks. With one of the biggest college basketball conferences (Big East) in the country, our kids too often get lured away to some of the other conferences across the country. Shagari Alleyne's decision to stay close to home, family and friends gives all those people who have been so much apart of his young life, a chance to see him continue to develop as a person basketball player. Coach Hicks should be commended as well. I'm sure his relationship with Alleyne is very special and helped make his decision to stay home an easy one. I wanna thank all those involved in helping and nuturing this young man. Who would have guessed it? Thank you coach Mo Hicks. Thank you Shagari Alleyne for staying home and playing in probably the country's best college basketball conference, "The Big East"
10/30/02 NJ Hoops: Commitments rolling in.
10/29/02 Eric Jaklitsch: 'Last week's 14th Annual LI Lupus Charity Classic was won by the Suffolk County team. The game looked like it was going to be a blowout as players like Tello Palacios, Nick Carter and Antione Aguidio played. The Whitman backcourt duo was phenomenal all game long. Hitting long range shots, making great passes, and playing defense. Amityville's AJ Price showed the crowd why he is one of the top guards in the country. The 6'0 Price finished with 22 points on array of moves, getting to the basket, setting up teammates, and hitting the three.
Other players that shined for Suffolk were the threesome from OSNA. Tello Pallacios showed why he is one of the best in the country by drawing constant double and triple teams. Palacios only finished with ten points, but he earned all of them. He made one of the hardest moves of the night when he caught a near impossible half court alley oop pass underneath the rim and layed it in on the opposite side. Konimba Diarra did what he did best and that was finishing around the basket, rebounding and blocking shots all night long. Oumar Sylla hit some long range shots and made a few nifty passes to his Mali counterpart for easy buckets. Kenny Jones gave a yeoman like effort underneath the basket scoring all 13 of his points inside and grabbing numerous rebounds. Other notable contributions came from Brian Sisti and LeMichael Allen.
For Nassau a relative unknown played the best game. Corey Hall a 6'0 senior guard from Farmingdale HS led Nassau with 20 points. He hit many of his shots from behind the three point line. He led his team which was down by more than 10 at certain points to a comeback. Etienne Brower also played well scoring 17 points on various different moves. Others that played well included St Dom's Thomas Paul and Chaminade's Dan Nawrocki. The MVP's of the game were Kenny Jones for Sffuolk and Corey Hall from Farmingdale. Our Savior New American's D'Andre Brown won the halftime dunk contest.'

10/18/02 John P Miciotta: Thursday's IS8 action on the IS8 Nike Tip-off Classic, 2002 page.
10/18/02 Keith Mason: 'Since my site is on hold right now while I'm away at college I thought I'd voice my opinion here. I've seen 2 preseason national rankings and I thought both were way off when ranking the NYC teams. In both Street & Smith and Hoops USA Rice is ranked in the top 5, now I think Rice will have a good team but they aren't even close to being one of the 5 best teams, remember they are returning only 1 starter (Shagari Alleyne) and just 3 players that received significant minutes, (Alleyne, Russell Robinson and Arturo Dubois.) I could understand if Rice a player that had a great summer, like Julius Hodge did a couple of years back and Sebastian Telfair did last year, but none of their players made any noise nationally. I think Rice can end up being a top 25 team but they aren't there yet, and definitely not top 5.
Instead I think the two best teams in the city are St. Raymond and Christ the King. Both teams are in similar positions, in that they are returning basically all their key players from last year's solid teams (Remember Allan Ray only played in a handful of games.) I hope nobody forgot about the Adidas Big Time when the Ravens won, and when you look at that roster you notice that only 2 key players on that team do not go to St. Raymond, Curtis Stinson (Winchendon) and Justin Marshall (Christ the King.) The thing that make St. Raymond's and Christ the King so good is that both teams have a few players that can hurt you and all their players can run. St. Ray's entire starting 5 has the ability to dominate a game, with Brian Laing, Gavin Grant, Louie McCroskey, Tariq Atkins and Daon Merritt. Christ the King only lost 1 key player Eric Martin. Their 3 key players will be Japhet McNeil, Mitchell Beauford and Justin Marshall. I think Marshall will surprise a lot of people and will be one of the better players in the CHSAA. But the player that will help this team the most is sophomore Chris Martin. He will be the best 6th man in the CHSAA and the team will have no dropoff when Japhet goes out the game, in fact they will look better at times with Chris running the team. So as you can tell I'm predicting a St. Raymond, Christ the King final in the CHSAA.'
10/17/02 All Star Report: 'Sources tell ASR that Top 35 recruit Terrance Roberts will commit to Syracuse later today at an afternoon press conference at St. Anthonys High School. The Orange beat out both Virginia and Maryland for Roberts, who joins an excellent recruiting class that includes wing forward Demetrius Nichols and guard Louie McCroskey. Roberts is an athletic power forward who finishes well around the hoop and can also knock down the 10-foot jumper.'
10/17/02 AP: 'Some basketball experts have predicted that Ohio high school senior LeBron James will be the No. 1 pick in the June NBA Draft. But at a news conference yesterday in Cleveland, James told reporters he hasn't ruled out playing in college. "It's always an option, and I narrowed my choices down to Ohio State, Florida, Duke, North Carolina and Louisville," James said during the news conference.'
10/17/02 jfkejku: 'Dorson Boyce is at Bayside.' Web note: Updated on the class of 2006 page.
10/17/02 Coach Jake Stevens: 'I am receiving e-mails and phone calls asking if Coach Rudy King is still working with me? No. Any activities that are being done do not include me. The Brooklyn Beasts/Falcons will be coached by Jake Edwards and Rock Eisenberg, and we are looking for a couple of coaches for the summer. The only thing I am doing in the winter is coaching at Grady HS.'
10/17/02 I would like to start the high school team profiles by end of month and finish by early December. Hopefully that will be the top 30 teams in the region and another thirty or so team profiles. Using Camden Catholic as an example, a thorough team profile should include the following:
team name and location (Camden Catholic, southern NJ), team nickname (Irish), coach and miscellany (Jim Crawford has coached team to 22 -4, 23 - 3 , 20 - 6 and 24-3 records in last four years), last season's record, ranking and final game (24 - 3, ranked # 9 in the state, top-seeded C.C. was upset by sixth seeded St Augustine 60 - 50 in the Parochial A South final ), probable starters and key reserves (Metro Classic starters were three seniors, the 6-4 twins Eric & Nick Cangelosi and 6-1 point guard, Drew Rosenfeld, 6-4 junior James Ulrich and 6-6 soph Brian Connolly - senior guards Mike Mangold and Byron Williams will be in reserve, but 6-3 junior Matt Molloy and 6-4 soph Terron Murray were missing from the Metro roster), starters lost to graduation or transfer (6-8 Will 'BJ' Bakanowski, rated by NJ Hoops # 15), promising freshmen or JV players (no idea, send email if you know), tournaments (no clue, send mail if you know), rivalries (CBA and St Augustine are the main Parochial A south competition, Bergen Catholic beat St Augustine for the Parochial A title and BC figures to be favored again this season), profile and prediction (this is a well coached team that can weather the loss of a highly ranked 6-8 center better than most. They play a disciplined motion offense and the interchangeable parts should serve them well. There are some problems. The team had a long trip to the Metro Classic and an even longer return to Camden. They were beaten by Teaneck in the first round. Nick Cangelosi is arguably the highest rated quarterback in Jersey. He's accepted a football scholarship to North Carolina. Will he be a factor in basketball this year? In the south neither St Augustine nor CBA look particularly strong, but it's hard to imagine the Irish getting past the likes of Bergen Catholic, Paterson Catholic, Seton Hall Prep or Don Bosco Prep winner in the north.)
If you can supply that kind of info for your team, I will post. Send mail to nycnjhoops@aol.com.
10/17/02 Coach Nick Blatchford: 'The CAS Warriors Program for Student-Athletes is holding tryouts for 8th and 9th graders (14 and Under). 10/15/02 Eddie Oliver - HoopsUSA (www.hoopsusa.com): 'My annual High School Basketball Tournament and Events Report is ready. Over 120 events with teams, players, dates, sites and contacts (email, phone and fax) are included in the Collegiate and Professional edition. Each report is colorful, binded and personalized. The cost of $100 is not much more than coaches would pay for a good meal. I also will have a very scaled down Fan Version for $30.
I have been working on the report for more than five months. The amount of information is incredible and I hope you will all want a copy. The only thing I sincerely ask is that you use the information for yourselves and not for duplication or redistribution. That only hurts me and what I do.
This and my website are what I do, all I do and all I want to do. I leave the other basketball stuff up to you guys. You're the experts and I tell everyone that.
I would like for you to mention my report in your publications if you don't mind. I do not do what I do to make a profit. This is my "labor of love" to stay involved with all the great basketball people I have met over the years. It is an expensive venture however and I do try to retrieve some of that money back. My wife gets tired of me spending the household funds on my hobby.'

They were down 17 points in the 4th quarter with 8 minutes left and he scored 25 points to win the game. I saw him play on 150th between 7-8 Ave in Harlem and he gave it to Kashief Pratt for about 25 points When he played Rod strickland he was a 7th grader in the summer of 2002 and was playing the high school division dropping like 10 points a game. This kid's the truth; look out for him in the future.'

10/13/02 L.P.A.C. continues to make noise at IS8.
Last April it was their star, Sammy Mejia who won the Most Outstanding
Player award. This afternoon, after going 4 - 0 in the regular season,
only five of them (from left to right - Emilio Gomez, Jamel Womack,
Eliziel Padilla, Danny Mena and Ed Berrios) suited
up, but they gave a marvelous team effort against a loaded Tim Thomas Playaz
squad before finally running out of gas in the final three minutes, losing
78 - 77. The view from the benches below tells the story -- Jimmy Salmon
had five Playaz reserves while Ruben Tavarez had two water bottles.
Huntington, the Future Stars, Bedford Y and S.O.N.D.A.Y. Express I were also winners today, as the Panthers and Rock Steady are playing for the last quarterfinal spot. More later. |

10/9/02 Coach Dwayne (Tiny) Morton: 'I'm doing a JHS Back to School sponsored by BooksBeforeBall Inc. The tournament is held in Coney Island at I. S. 288. The tournament consists of two games on Fridays and three games on Saturdays. Before each game, the students must attend an instructional class that will teach them various aspects of being a student/athlete. They are also informed about the different occupations beside being the pro-athlete. We are in our fourth week of the tourney. I had the opportunity to watch some of the best 7th & 8th grade student/athletes. For examples, 6'4" Rashid Isler, 6''7" Brandon Walters, Dwan Mcmillian, Ronique Colbert, 6'1" Vance Kelly, 5'10" Lance Stevenson (6th), Jamal Green, Isiah Morton (5th), Alex Nieves, Dawon Marbury, Don Marbury Jr., Darrin Walls, Quasim Pugh, Zamal Nixon and many more. In addition, we have some very good young ladies that are really competing with these athletes. These kids must be the top JHS athletes in our city. This week we are expecting the #1 8th grader, Clavon Givens. To top it off, it's great to see the members of this year Lincoln basketball team give up their weekends to coach these kids.'
10/9/02 Hoop Scoop: '...We also continue to hear that 6'5 Earl Smith from Newark (St. Benedict's) NJ, who is ranked #23 nationally in the senior class by the Hoop Scoop, after emerging as one of the biggest sleepers in the nation this summer, would verbally commit to North Carolina, if a scholarship offer was forthcoming. And Smith may get the time he needs for that to happen, because he was recently reclassified as a junior. We also understand that Villanova, Notre Dame, and Texas are the top three for 6'6 Arnaud Dahi from Burlington (Life Center) NJ, who is ranked #109 nationally in the senior class by the Hoop Scoop, and 6'10 Roman Narmbaye-Mbainas from Burlington (Life Center) NJ, who is ranked #288 nationally in the senior class by the Hoop Scoop, is considering St. Joseph's, Rutgers, Colorado, La Salle, and Massachusetts. We also have finally confirmed that 6'3 Ramel Bradley has transferred from New York (Park West) NY to Durham (Mt. Zion Christian) NC. And that's important, because that will make Charlotte even that much tougher to beat for Bradley's services.'

10/8/02 Booksnball: 'First class basketball clinics deserves a first class turnout. The NYC PSAL has put together a quartet of top notch hoops clinics for all of their Varsity & Junior Varsity coaches of Boys basketball. the first one was held Monday evening at the Leon Goldstein H. S. (on the campus of Kingsboro CC) in Brooklyn. A fine spread of food and soft drinks were provided for all in attendance.
Mike Jarvis, the coach of the St. John's Univ. Red Storm did a great job of talking to the coaches and reflected fondly on his 17 years as a high school coach in Massachusetts. The only thing lacking were more coaches! He went over three phases of the St. John's defense and advised the coaches to have their student-athletes sigh contracts about the athletic and academic commitment they must make as members of a high school team.
Hopefully the coaches will take advantage of the remaining clinics to be held as follows; Tuesday 10/8 at Brandeis H. S. in Manhattan (for Bx./Man coaches Nick Macarchuk of Stony Brook will present)), Wednesday, 10/9 at Tottenville H.S.(Staten Is. Bob Leckie of St. Peter's College will present) and Thursday, 10/10 at Cardozo H. S. in Queens(Tom Pecora of Hofstra will present). All of the clinics are free and start at 4p.m. Coaches living in any of the boroughs mentioned but who coach in another borough have the option to attend a clinic in their HOME borough. Included in each clinic will be a presentation about "new" rules for high school basketball and a "Student-athlete Game Plan for Success" that coaches are encouraged to utilize with their teams this year. The PSAL continues to provide positive activities for their coaches and the coaches hopefully will show their commitment to enhancing their skills by attending the clinics. It's a win, win situation for all those involved.'

10/6/02 Coach Ted Gsututs: 'Last year, the first annual Hoops 4 Heroes "Long Island Vs. New York City" high school game to benefit the children of the victims of the WTC attack was a great success! The entire net proceeds from the game, which included tickets sold and the selling of souvenir t-shirts, shorts and trophies donated by Game Over, was donated to the Police Athletic League, who provided a Christmas Party for the children of the victims of the WTC attack. This year there will be two games, the Girls game will be played at 3 P.M. and the Boys' game will be played at 5 P.M. Those of you who attended last years game was treated with an exciting game, with Curtis Sumpter of Bishop Loughlin and now with Villanova and Jason Fraser of Amittyville and now with Villanova were named MVP.
