6/28/03 In the first two UDC court A games this morning the TK All Stars midget team almost doubled SEBNC 72 - 38 and Wake Eden seniors surprised the Gauchos 56 - 50.  TK arrived twenty minutes late with only five players but two of them were center Justin Davis (19 points, pictured left at halftime) and point guard Antonio Cannon Jr. (14 points, pictured with his coach and father - missed them for the Fathers Day pictures)  and they were more than enough.

The 'chos arrived on time but sleepy, while Wake Eden jumped to an early 16 - 9 first quarter lead. The Gauchos led 28 - 21 at the half but were outscored 35 to 22 in the second half as WE's S. Clements (15), Gary Graham (12), Jack Fulcher (11) and Carl Gervais (9) each contributed.  The Gauchos started Ronald Ramon and Richard Forbes in the backcourt with a frontline of CJ Sammy, Taj Gibson and Curtis Kelly and Chris Skrelja coming off the bench. Ronald and Richard had 17 and 16 points on about 50 shots. Curtis rarely moved into the post on offense and the perimeter players seldom looked for CJ or Taj in the post.

Taj Gibson (pictured above) is the 6-7 Gauchos forward currently enrolled at Telecommunications High. He's considering transferring to Rice for next season.

6/28/03 Wayne Simone: The Maryland Invitational.

6/28/03  Mario Beras: 'Dyckman Senior Division Thursday Action -- In the battle of wills, we saw Dyckman take on the Dominican Power of Washington Heights. At the 1st half, Dyckman began the game on a 18-4 run to take a commanding lead behind the guard play of Steven "No Fear" Polanco and Robert Uribe. Dominican Power could not break the press, 31-23 advantage Dyckman. In the 2nd half, we saw a bit of the same as Dyckman took a 42-30 lead. But the game began to unfold as Dominican Power began to inch it's way to basket and shots began to fall in. Led by Edwin Araujo and Ricky Rosa Dominican Power was able to tie the game at 49 all with 1:00 on the clock. In the next play, the Dyckman missed a layup for the lead and Domincan Power and called timeout. In the ensuing play, the ball was in the hands of Ricky Rosa with :34 to go. At the :15 mark, Ricky drove to the basket and missed the layup but was fouled and made 1 of 2. No one boxed out so they got the rebound. Final score 50-49 Dominican Power. For more action and schedule please visit Dyckman Youth Enterprises, INC.'

6/26/03 Coach Artie Cox, sondayfoundation@aol.com: A review of SONDAY EXPRESS Jrs. to be on the Rumble in the Bronx.

6/26/03 Coach Artie Cox: 'Congratulations to Speedy Claxton on his first NBA title ring. Thank God Greg Popovich finally left Speedy in the game in the 4th quarter. Speedy's performance really has helped his stock rise. He is a free agent and the timing could not have been better. I hope the Knicks sign Speedy. They're talking about trading up for TJ Ford. Why not draft a big man and sign Speedy? TJ Ford is a quick, but Speedy is not called Speedy for nothing. Don't be scared of the NY pressure on Speedy. There is none. The Claxton's family unit does not let knuckleheads around their children. He's a perfect fit in Madison Square Garden. Mr. Laydon, Latrel Sprewell for TJ Ford might cost you your job!'  Web note: More from Artie.

6/25/03 HoopU.com: How to stay out of Summer School.

6/25/03 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): I would like to take this time to thank Lincoln and Rich for their nice words concerning me and my student/athletes who I've had under my direction for 3 - 5 years. Max Menard (Madison) is a person, who cares about other people. It is not always what he can get from the program, but what he can do for his program. Sean Watson is a well rounded person, a real tough competitor, and leader. Karim McKenzie (Wadleigh) has a good upside in college, and is working very hard to be a positive person for the program.'

6/25/03 Louis Xifaras: 'Queens RimRockers Boys 12U and 14U were both victorious this week in Nike Metro Swoosh at Milbank in Manhattan. The 14U team beat Scan and the 12U team beat Family Academy 45-10. In the 12U game, strong defense by Shakil Jordan and Charles Parisi led to a flood of easy layups by Robriel Acquie (17 points). However again the story of the day was 9 year old Mark Parisi, who had 17 points with 3 three-pointers. Markie's jumpshot has been hot lately and he is getting better playing on-ball defense. Joseph Fegerson, brother of Our Savior New American sophomore Thomas Davis, also went to work on the boards to lead a balanced QRR win. This team, coached by Mark Parisi Sr., will also be competing in UDC 12U, Kenny Anderson 10U, and Adidas 14U. Their next game is this Saturday in the Adidas 14U league at 12pm at Hoyt Park, right next to the Triboro Bridge.'

Junior 6-10 Frank Jones great size great potential, 6-3 junior Greg Gamble long and lanky slasher and solid rebounder, Rob Garrison 5-8 junior no flash just solid play at point. 6/22/03 Mandy Murphy, AND 1 Public Relations: 'St. Anthony's of Jersey City, NJ defeated Seton Hall Prep, 66-55, in the finals this afternoon at Seton Hall University to take the title in the championship game of the East I site of the 2003 AND 1 High School Basketball Championship (HBC). Leading scorers were: Otis Campbell and Derrick Mercer of St. Anthony's with 19 and 18 points, respectively and Andrew Pusar of SHP with 23 points. Campbell finished with four boards, two assists and a block as well, while Mercer also put up three boards, three assists and three steals.

St. Anthony's is one of the top programs in the nation with 23 state championships to their name, and a regular season record of 21-5 last season. Under head coach Bob Hurley, St. Anthony's will head to Philadelphia next weekend to compete for the right to be named true champions at the 2003 AND 1 HBC at St. Joseph's University on Sunday, June 29th at 12:00 noon. More on the And 1, 2003 page.

6/22/03 Louis Xifaras: 'Just in response to the persons post about Shaun James being too old, there really is no age limit set for these big AAU Tournaments. 17U basically means anyone being a senior next year, and 16U basically means anyone being a junior next year. If your not going to a college the next year, you can play in these events.'

6/22/03 Roberto E. Diaz, NYC Finest - 'I think the one to answer should be the Director of the tournament, but if that is the case I consider that to be crazy. There is a big difference between a kid who is 17 and one who is 19 getting closer to 20. In that case they should just make it high school 19u and he would be closer then. To go and play in a 17u tournament and be 19 or older is not within close proximity to make the exception. I think if an age is set and therefore setting the standards, so follow it. How will a coach know what age group of kids to bring? Definitely don't agree with that.'

6/22/03 Rich Kosik: 'not true. Three Stripes & Big Time in Vegas all have age/school restrictions.'

6/22/03 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'Tilden High School just finished a great two day camp at Hofstra University where Tom Pecora and his great staff treated all the players, coaches and officials in a first class way and helped all the teams enjoy a great camp. My thanks go out to the whole Hofstra Pride Family for having us at the camp.'

6/22/03 Mandy Murphy, AND 1 Public Relations: 'We are left with eight great teams in the finals, with those games beginning at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning: - Seton Hall Prep, Don Bosco Prep, Niagara Falls, St. Raymond's, Bloomfield Tech, St. Anthony's, Roman Catholic, St. Benedict's.

As you know, the winner of this region will head to Philadelphia next weekend to compete against the winner of the other seven regions across the country for a national title. Last weekend El Toro (Lake Forest, CA) and Rainier Beach (Seattle, WA) won the HBC West I and II regions, respectively. The other five regions are taking place over this weekend as well, and I have attached the score updates that I have from three of the five; (the other two in the Midwest: at Notre Dame the final four are Canton, Marquette, Hoover and Julian; at T.C.U. the final four are Rio Grande, Carter, Lincoln and Putnam City.)'

6/22/03 NJ Hoops: Mendham tops East Side.

6/22/03 James Brown:: 'According to Saturday's Bergen Record, twin brothers Charles and Kevin Sullivan have commited to Hofstra and LaSalle respectively. Both received football scholarships and plan to walk-on for hoops.'

6/21/03 Four of eight brackets are now decided at the And 1 tournament. Seton Hall Prep, Don Bosco Prep, Niagra Falls, St. Raymond defeated Raritan, St Patrick (!), Linden and Holy Cross.  The other four winners will come from the Bishop Dougherty vs Bloomfield Tech, St Anthony vs Irvington, Lenape vs. Roman Catholic and St Benedict vs. Eastern matchups. Details on the And 1, 2003 page.

6/21/03 Louis Xifaras: 'Monsignor McClancy won the first game in the And 1 High School Championships hosted by the Hoop Group at Seton Hall University. Leading the way in scoring was Carlos Arellano with 18 points. Good guard play by Nick Hamilton-Lopez and Troy Mitchell paced McClancy and a strong defensive 4th quarter by Dexter DeJesus and freshman Mohamed Lo (9 blocks) sealed the victory. We suffered our first loss of the tournament the next game to powerhouse Seton Hall Prep. We play again Sunday at 10am. This summer McClancy is also competing in the Avirex League, Poly Prep Team Camp, Bishop Ford Team Camp, Eastern Invitational Team Camp and the Metro Classic.

The Queens RimRockers 12U Boys team fell to Team Roc today in UDC, however it was the strong RimRocker debut of 9 year old Mark Parisi that has gotten the attention. Mark scored 15 points and really held his own against players 3 years older than him. Markie has an unbelievable jump shot for his age, and really sees the floor well for a 9 year old. Look for this kid in the future to be the next big time scoring point guard coming out of New York City. I'm not just trying to hype this kid up, you can ask super biddy or biddy coaches around the area about him and they will all tell you.'

6/21/03 DJ Brown: 'Wait a minute! Was I the only one who saw Shaun James on the court last night playing with the Juice All-Stars? Now I'm not hating just curious- and correct me if I'm wrong- how does a player which caused a championship forfeit in an 19&under tournament play in a 17&under tournament?'

6/21/03 Coach Sly Johnson: 'The Manhasset Allstars Basketball Program will host a series of Leagues throughout the summer. Please accept this as an invitation for you to enter your Team(s) in what is expected to be some of the best basketball on Long Island. 6/21/03 Mario Beras: 'Dyckman Basketball Tournament 2003 - Seniors Division, Thursday 19th, 2003 Dyckman 58, TCG Warriors for Christ 44.  Hi Scorers Steven Polanco 16 and Robert Uribe 15.'

6/20/03 In the first round at the Rumble this evening Pulley Black, NY Elite, the Juice 16's and The Ravens won over Willie Howie, South Florida Heat, the Westchester Hawks 16's and the Jersey Cyclones. Willie Howie got 19 from Fordham Prep's Joe Cooke and 16 from Monroe Campus guard Roger Green but were overmatched the Pulley losing 76 -55. NY Elite trailed 57 - 53 late in the game but squeezed out a 62 - 61 victory behind a 25 point performance from their point guard, Nick Carter. Meanwhile the Juice All Star 16's arrived without their uniforms but managed a 56 - 50 win against the Westchester Hawks. Then on court four the Ravens trailed the Jersey Cyclones by 18 in the first half but came back to win by two..

In the 7:30 games the Juice AllStars, the Jersey Cyclone 16's, the New Jersey Roadrunners (replacing King Court Ohio) and Riverside defeated the Queens Rimrockers, the Yerwood Ballers 16's, Wisconsin Playground and the CAS Warriors. Juice romped to a 30+ win behind 26 from Kojo Mensah and 21 from Ramel Bradley. Sebastian was content to get each of his teammates involved including Shawn James playing for the 17 and under Juice team. Bloomfield Tech's freshman point guard Deshawn Butler didn't play much for his varsity team this season but led the Cyclone 16's with a 27 point effort. On court three Sandy Pyonin's Roadrunners got a 17 point game from Jonathan Hart as they ran away from the Wisconsin Ballers 62 - 43.

6/19/03 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): 'We had another close encounter at West 4th Street yesterday, and we were on the losing end this time. The score was tied with three seconds remaining, and their ball out under their basket. The ball hit a player, he fumbled the ball and got fouled, he made one of two, game over. FYA junior team playing in 19U division of the tournament, outstanding players were Sean (real deal) Watson hit 10 threes in the first half, and to cool him off it took a box and one the entire second half and Max (big max) Menard fromMadison played a great for the entire game. I haven't seen a player shoot like Sean in a longtime. Next game at west 4th Friday 6/20 4:30pm.'

He had given an earlier verbal commitment to Los Angeles City (CA) but changed his mind after visiting both schools. Billy became a highly-sought juco recruit this spring after a series of  strong showings on the AAU circuit, capped by an MVP performance in the prestigious CYP Tournament for the Gauchos in Portchester (NY) last month. In January, he scored 13 of his team-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to help the NB Celtics down Storm King Prep 92-70 in the RSB Invitational at Fashion Institute. He was also among the top vote-getters for selection to the All-Star game at the conclusion of the Big Apple Sports Junior College Exposure Games held at John Jay College in April. A resident of Fort Greene, Billy briefly attended Rutgers Prep and later obtained a GED.'

6/17/03 Kristie Ackert: 'Just reading the list of unsigned seniors. I think that it is pretty interesting and maybe worth a story looking into what happens to them all. One mistake, however, Stewart Graddick is going to Fairleigh Dickinson.

6/17/03 John Koegel: 'Mitchell Beauford signed with Stony Brook last month.'

6/17/03 Gary Sims 'Unsigned players - I'm happy to report that Kirk Bunn has signed with Savannah State as of last month. Kojo Mensah is likely to attend Northfield Mount Herman prep school. Still unsigned are 6'5" swingman Lou Rodriquez formerly of Rice HS/ Christian Shores Academy, Fla. 78 GPA/900+ SAT, and 6'2" combo guard Jason Romer of Wadleigh 80 GPA/860 SAT.

6/17/03 Gary Sims I'm pleased to announce that 6'3" scoring guard Travis Billy has decided to attend Georgia Perimeter in the fall semester. Georgia Perimeter has been a Top 20 JUCO the past couple of years and is looking forward to Travis' offensive output. Travis who was the high scorer (19 points) for Nate Blue's team versus Storm King Prep with DePaul bound Sammy Mejia was also the MVP of this year's CYP Portchester Invitational for the NY Gauchos. He is a fluid wing player who makes scoring look easy. He's nicknamed is "Smoothirty". What I didn't mention before was that he guarded Mejia, who scored 24, but not that many on Travis and in Portchester he guarded Virginia bound Gary Forbes who finished the game with 10 points and wasn't really a factor. In two years Travis should receive looks from major Division 1 colleges. Good Luck in Georgia.'

6/17/03 Coach Willlie Negron: 'I just wanted to take time out for Robert Byland family and friends for their loss. We have to remember before we go outside to play tournament ball during the week and weekend that family comes first. As we get ready to play this week at Fordham University for Rumble in Bronx we will have a moment a silence for Dwayne and his friend Robert.'

6/17/03 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): 'The 15u team captured championship in the Kings Bay Youth Organization basketball tournament on Saturday 6/14. Jamal McCoy received the mvp honors by scoring 30 plus in each game. Next West 4th Street game is on Wednesday 6/18 at 4:30pm.

My prayers go to Mrs. Robert Byland and family.'

6/17/03 Lonnie Webb: I just wanted to add my input about one of the players John P. Miciotta mentioned regarding unsigned seniors. I had the fortunate privilege of watching Ernie Brown play every game this past season. He is truly an underrated players who unfortunately just happened to play on one of Mt. Vernon's best teams this past season. He is no doubt a very good player regardless of his size because he plays much bigger than his 5'10 frame indicates. Although he was somewhat overshadowed because of the talent of the likes of Keith Benjamin, Dexter Gray and Jonathan Mitchell he still managed to make the Westchester "All County" Team. He was also the Most Valuable Player in the Apple Bee's All County Westhester Classic which is an allstar game made up of Westchester County's top seniors. He could definitely play in D-1 and if he played on any other team in the county this past season, he could have easily averaged at least 20 points a game. He can hit the 3 and penetrate to the hole. This kid is very deceptive, talented and can be a very valuable addtion to a college team willing to take a chance on him. Believe me, Ernie Brown is a legitimate point guard who would make any college coach a believer.'

6/17/03 John P Miciotta on unsigned seniors.

6/17/03 This past weekend's results and high scorers are on the UDC 2003 page.

6/17/03 Dwayne Webb, NYC Finest player: 'On Sunday June 15th coach Robert Byland of the AAU Team Roc was killed after being shot in the cross-fire of a group or youths shooting their guns. Point guard Maurice Charlton (Deer Park) led all scorers with 26 points, while John Filosa (St. John the Baptist) added 16 points and Matt Devot (Holy Trinity) scored 12. To reach the final, LIL-Kiang defeated the Silver Bullets (Suarino), 63 - 41, and St. Matthew's, 68 - 50. 6/13/03 Winston@GameBallMagazine: 'I'm just returning from Paris, France watching the Nike/Belles USA Select Team capture the championship in the 15th Annual REZE International Girls Tournament. The USA Select Team beat the National Cadet Teams from Czech Republic (73-71), REZE (78-50), Russia (73-60) and the French in the championship (89-73). Coached by Mike Flynn of Blue-Star, the USA Select Team was made up some of the top sophomores and freshmen from around the country: Kia Vaughn 6'4/C SO New York City,  Marissa Coleman 6'0/WF SO Washington DC, Amanda Thompson 6'0/WF FR Chicago, Danielle Campbell 6'4 C SO Chicago, Mary Kate McDade 5'8/PG SO Philadelphia, Carrem Gay 6'3/PF SO New York City, Amber Harris 6'6/C FR Indiana, Tia Grant 6'0/WF SO New York City, Abbey Robertson 6'2/PF SO Virginia, Nakejia Kelly 5'7/PG SO New York City, Enonge Stovall 6'0/WF SO Philadelphia, Rashida Juniad 6'4/C FR Philadelphia, Kyle Lardner 5'7/PG SO New York City.

A great experience was had by all, even though politics hit home in a big way when the USA and Russia met in the semifinals. Both teams came dressed for the game in home white uniforms, neither willing to budge on who would wear the road color uniforms. With both teams in a stare down, square off the Russians actually sat in the middle of the foul lane while the USA Select Team started on the lay-up line. Eventually the USA Select Team decided to wear the road colored uniforms and proceeded beat the Russians.'

6/8/03 ESPN: Nothing guaranteed (yet) for Ebi, Charlie Villanueva.

6/8/03 Booksnball aka Rich: 'The June 8th link  (above) to ESPN & the story about Charlie Villanueva's workout at the NBA Chicago Pre-Draft, is must reading. Anyone who has been around Charlie (adidas/ABCD 2002, 2001 & 2000) knows he's a great person. He's worked hard to get himself together academically after leaving the city and is eligible to go to college and play right away. Basketball wise, you look at his legitimate 6'10 frame (now more developed since training at IMG) and growth potential and visions of a Kevin Garnett type of player come to mind. What objective admirers have been waiting for is to see that consistent Garnett type competitive zeal, energy, fire each and every time he steps out on the court. The ESPN review of his Chicago workout seem "kind" compared to what I heard personally from others who were in attendance. If this was a job interview, he probably didn't get the job! How can you go through a workout and seem to be coasting energy wise? Now, Charlie will get more chances with behind closed door individual NBA team workouts and perhaps he will tear the place up with his skills and hopefully jump high into the 1st round of the NBA draft. (Make sure the 1st round is guaranteed & don't listen to anyone that just wants to collect their finder's fee for advice!) I f not, I hope those around him have Charlie's best interest in mind and get him on track to Storr's, where a year or two of top notch coaching and college competition will bring out the best in Charlie's game.

Final words to the wise, on more then one occasion NBA guys (Jeff Van Gundy, Rick Pitino, Tony Fiorentino and Chris Wallace) have told me, "what separates guys more at this level more then bodies (size & weight), is what's inside their head and heart."  That says a lot. Hopefully everyone out there in the world of city hoops is continuing to be part of the solution and not the problem. See ya at ABCD!'

He plans to sign a letter of intent during the fall signing period and enroll at UNLV in January, 2004. Williams played a major role in LACC's recent COA State JUCO Championship, scoring a team-high 21 points (8-of-11 field goals) with 9 rebounds as the Cubs downed Fresno 90-82 in the title game. He showed his ability to step up in big games a year earlier when he converted all 12 of his shots (3 field goals and 9 free throws) for 15 points in the 2002 state final won by Saddleback 77-76. LACC compiled an outstanding 66-11 mark during Williams' two years, including a school-best 36-2 in 2002-03.

The Bronx (NY) native earned Co-Player of the Year in the South Coast Conference this season after posting averages of 11 points and 6.5 rebounds while making an amazing 71.5% of his field-goal attempts. As a freshman in 2001-02, Williams averaged 8.4 points and 4.2 rebounds and shot 57% from the floor.

Williams, who attended Jane Addams HS in the Bronx, selected the Rebels over UMass, Central Connecticut and Kent State. In 1999-2000, he was named first team All-PSAL Bronx by the New York Daily News and third team All-City PSAL by the New York Post.'
