After getting smashed by Riverside in the Nike Memorial Day Classic in Bloomington, IN. they had the determination to refocus and retool our team with some of the toughest players I've ever seen. Point guard Lavance Fields led the attack breaking down defenses with his left, right crossover that reminds me a lot of my former teammate at Syracuse University Dwayne 'Pearl' Washington. Jessie Sapp broke out in the Peachjam creating matchup nightmares for the DC Blue Devils and the Jackson Tigers. Like Russell Robinson did last year Jessie is playing in both Showcase events. Playing up doesn't seem to weaken his game; he even seems to play more focused. The greatest compliment is that when we go with four guards Russell, Sundiata and Ronald trust him with the ball. JR Mitchell without question is the best shooter on the team. So when teams packing it in, JR opens it up. Not to mention he's a high honors student at Xaverian HS. Never had to worry about losing him to summer school. Nyan Beutang and Weyimu Efujku are our warriors. They provide a physical presence that have all the college coaches nodding their heads and taking notes. Nyan of course reminds all of us everyday about his 2003 PSAL HS Championship at Lincoln. He won't take the damn ring off. Our guys up front - Brian Henry, Hayesman John Gooden and 'The Rookie' Curtis Kelly - have all been fantastic on the boards. Pound for pound we never seem to be able to weigh in against some the beefsters from the Midwest and south. Heart to heart though we never backed down. It has been particularly fun to watch Curtis develop. He's been physically beat up by the likes of DJ White and Al Jefferson, but he's not intimidated. Maybe it's because he doesn't even know who they are. He's learning how to use his length and 8'10" wing span. He also smart, he just recommitted himself to his daily push-up routine.' 7/25/03 Empire State Games: New York scholastic trailed Long Island by one at halftime before winning 92 - 79 led by Carlos Collazo (23), Doug Elwell (22), Clyde Chapman (13) and Serge Clement (10). 7/25/03 UDC weekend schedule on the UDC 2003 page. 7/25/03 NJ Hoops: Teaneck prevails in Summer League semis. 7/25/03 Mike Rod: 'NY-Long Island basketball leagues seeks teams & players. Barry scored a game-high 28 points in the PSAL "B" City Final, but Wings dropped a 70-68 decision to Bronx rival James Monroe at St. Francis College. For the season, he averaged 10.7 points and 6.6 rebounds for the Bronx "B" regular season champions. As a junior in 2001-02, Barry recorded 12 points and 13 rebounds in the title contest as Wings captured the city "B" crown with a 63-57 triumph over Global Studies. He was named First-Team All-Bronx by the New York Daily News, Honorable Mention All-Bronx by New York Newsday, and Honorable Mention All-City PSAL by the New York Post.' 7/24/03 Daily News: Juice flows sans Telfair. 7/24/03 Las Vegas Sun: Big Time lives up to its name. 7/24/03 NJ Hoops: Four overtime thriller in Linden semis. 7/24/03 Anthony Nicedemo: 'Teaches Hoops Westchester's Best Summer League playoffs began on Wednesday night. Jamaal Smith of LaSalle Academy, Greg Willis of Health Professions and Michael Dodd of Edison were the top performers during the 2 games. The Brooklyn-Queens Warriors will be playing in 2 tournaments throughout the summer: Student Athlete's in Astoria and the Lefrak City Classic in Corona. Then we came back home to handle our business in NYC capturing the IS 8 crown beating Riverside again in a championship game with several notable tournament highlights i.e. Sundiata Gaines' 63 point performance establishing a new scoring record in a single game. He is in the same class as other Delaware Valley standout athletes -- to name a few Kobe Brayant, Rip Hamilton, Dajuan Wagner, Al Harrington and Lou Row.' 7/17/03 UDC top teams after week five on the UDC 2003 page.
7/17/03 Coach Jeff Rivera Queens RimRockers 14u :'This is a correction for the Manhasset All-stars league We defeated the Manhasset All-stars 14u team 43-31 on Saturday, July 12.' 7/16/03 The first three games at St Rays were all competitive as the host Ravens overcame a one point halftime deficit to beat the Christ the King Royals 72 - 65, Rice took a struggling Bloomfield Tech team 70 - 66 and Columbus edged Holy Cross 72 - 66. Yesterday the Raven starters did fine and were aided by senior reserve guard Rich Jackson. Today their starters - Ricky Torres (19 on a lot of shots), Brian Laing (14), Gavin Grant (12), Wesley Wicks (8) and Frank Elger (4) - prospered while senior point guard Donte Chisolm came off that deep bench to add 8 points. For the Royals only Chris Martin (game high 20) got to double digits, but Larry Davis (9), Brian Beckford (7), Joe DeLuca (7) and Ahmed Allen (6, all on in close ball fakes) each had their moments. CK's 6-7 junior center Adam Walker has been MIA for this tournament but he will be a factor during the regular season. Bloomfield Tech has three senior guards in point guard Deshawn Dwight and wings Courtney Nelson and Jason Wilson. Each is a worthy D1 prospect. They have a poised and precocious 6-7 sophomore center in Casim Drummond, who ranks among the top ten sophomores in the region and that's not all. Their fifth starter is the capable, experienced 6-5 senior forward, Rich Laurent and the key reserves are 6-3 senior wing Lamarr Register, 6-4 forward Kelvin Brown and 6-3 swing sophomore Deshawn Butler. This team could rank about fifth in New Jersey next season with only St Ants, St Benedict and Seton Hall Prep obviously better. But they're bombing in da Bronx. Today Rice arrived with five players - sophomore point guard Edgar Sosa (20), sophomore swing Kashief Pratt (9), forward Brian Henry (10) plus two All Hallows guards, Terrell Elliston (10) and Codi Oliver (21). Kash called them the 'Rice Gaels'. Codi and Terrell will play for All Hallows not Rice next season. Edgar, Kash and Brian will get considerable playing time but Russell Robinson, Arturo Dubois and Curtis Kelly will be the Raider stars while juniors Joseph Vines, Densel Barnes and Stephen Walker will challenge today's three for minutes. Meanwhile Bloomfield Tech gets the host Ravens tomorrow! Columbus, the PSAL team from the Bronx, looked like the patsies before the touney began, but they played the Royals tough yesterday and bested Holy Cross today. Their backcourt of senior Elvis Lora and junior Keniel Henry dominated while burly center Jessie Iyalekhue (14 points, including two crucial buckets late in the game) and wing shooters, lefty Tim Zehus and Jeff Povataj kept the floor spread. It was a dismal day for the Knights. Guards Kevin Ogaltree (21) and Gordan McKenzie (14) were high for the Cross but point guard Michael Johnson was held to 4, Joe Conner hit only one of two trey attempts and Laurence Jolicouer was saddled with foul trouble for most of the game. 7/16/03 UDC Week five results on the UDC 2003 page. 7/16/03 John P Miciotta on the High School Summer Challenge @ St. Raymond HS page. 7/16/03 Robert White, www.NyHoops.com: 'We have our pictures ans stories from ABCD online now. We also won a quarterfinal game against Lawrence Woodmere Academy. Pennsylvania Red Storm from Bucks County, Pennsylvania defeated us in a close 2- OT game in the semifinals. Greg Willis from Health Professions averaged about 23 ppg and 10rpg. Jamaal Smith of LaSalle Academy had an impressive tournament. He averaged about 16 ppg along with 6+ rpg and apg. Maybe CHSAA needs to fine the school and show Rice HS that they need to follow the rules, but by not allowing the team to travel it will be holding back a big time school from NY which will be one of the top schools in the nation next year. Hopefully CHSAA will take a action against Rice HS but not punish the players by not letting them travel.' 7/14/03 Bob Paul, Long Island Summer Hoops Festival Tournament Director: 'Today was Championship Sunday at the Long Island Summer Hoops festival at the Island Garden. In the Classic Semifinals, Connecticut Uptemp outlasted the Brooklyn Blue Devils 56-53 led by 6'10" Jeff "Big Deli" Salvoski. The Blue Devils were led by Liam Biesty and Charlie Parker who both had 15 pts each. In the other semifinal, the Westchester Hawks - Purcigliotti defeated Pro - Bound. The Hawks top scorer was Tate Sherman out of Horace Greely with 23pts. In the LI Summer Hoops Festival semifinals, both games were outstanding. In a rematch of an earlier pool game, the NYC Jaguars faced off against the Connecticut Knights. In a back and forth game, the NYC Jaguars advanced to the title game by a score of 70-60 with 22 points from Ryan Johnson including 8 of 8 from the line down the stretch. The Knights were led by Travon Little out of Danbury HS with 24 points. The PA Storm also advanced to the Championship game with an 83-81 double overtime win over the previously undefeated B/Q Warriors. Larry Murphy and Doug Hayes had 17 pts. each for the Storm while sleeper Greg Willis out of Health Professions led the Warriors with 26pts. In the Classic Finals, the Conn Uptempo got out to an early lead and were able to hang on down the stretch to win the Classic Championship by a score of 57-53. The Uptempo had very balanced scoring with all their players scoring led by the "Big Deli" Salovski who had 13 points and really made his presence felt on both ends with numerous blocked and redirected shots. He was a very impressive prospect with a great set of hands and excellent passing skills out of the post. In the last and best game of the tournament, the NYC Jaguars battled with the PA Storm who was playing their sixth game in less than thirty hours. The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead and led by 13 at the half. The Jaguars brought great energy and work ethic to all of their games. However the Storm battled back with six second half threes and was able to force overtime and eventually win the game when pg Larry Sharp hit his second consecutive game winner with 2 seconds to go in OT with the final score 61-59. Doug Hayes had 15 pts for the Storm and Otoja Abit and John Ager had 14 and 13 points respectively Thanks to all the fans and coaches that made the weekend very enjoyable. It is great to read about our concerns that make up the basketball community. I do not have the total solution, however I would like to offer one. Regardless if you are a guru, participant, or a guide to young people in this game of life (basketball included); you should know of a person who aside from all the coaches, mentors, parents, etc. has led by example. This person has won a championship against the Celtics before, and I repeat before there was an NBA. He is now at age 88, works and mentors students. He checks report cards, helps parents, supports and watches young people evolve, at the Hoe Avenue Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx. The person I am referring to is none other than (and let's give him his props) Mr. John Isaacs. I had the honor of speaking with Mr. Isaacs after graduation yesterday, and his love for the children (we did not talk basketball) was overwhelming. So, regardless of the name of the team you are around, or your status in life, or your goals and aspirations (both coaching and non coaching) please, please remember this saying - regardless of how big and strong the tree, or how it branches out, when you get to the bottom of it, there are always roots.' 7/7/03 Daily News: Heat's on at ABCD. 7/7/03 These are 65 graduated eighth grade players, class of 2007 from our region and the high schools they will be attending next year: Latig Agard - Christ the King, Chris Allmond - Holy Spirit NJ, Daniel Anderson - St. Augustine NJ, Renie Anderson - Egg Harbor Township NJ, Tye Beal- McClancy, George Beese - Linden NJ Alray Blackmon - Shabazz NJ, Isaiah Blue- McClancy, Greg Bock - St Peters Prep NJ, Malik Boothe - Christ the King, Adam Braswell - Burlington Township, Jason Brogsdale - Paul VI NJ, Billy Butler - Poly Prep, Max Calixte- McClancy, TJ Carey - St Dominic Raphiq Carnegie - Plainfield NJ, Shameel Carty - Holy Cross, Mike Cavateo - Christ the King, Corey Chandler - Newark Eastside NJ, Austen Cortese - Holy Trinity, L.I. And to this day my question has never been answered. Maybe today this question will be answered by the coaches that have their program to that next level. How do schools recruit their players at the age of 11 or 12 and have them go to the top high schools in New York and they all have the grades to get in? Are these Catholic schools telling the public that these kids passed the entry exam and passed their classes without a problem? It's hard to believe because I've sat down with some respectable coaches and I mean "some" and all they have to say is that, this kid isn't smart enough to go there! So please if anyone has the courage to answer this question then let all the members in the High Hoops know why? Or maybe we need someone to enforce rules in the Catholic schools? Maybe start an entry exam with the city?'
