Rich presented his "Game Plan For Life" to our PTA and student athletes and really blew everyone away with his information about college scholarship money that is available to every high school student whether or not they participate in sports in school. Rich was concise and right on the money with his info and we all needed it and are smarter and more informed because of his great speech. Rich Kosik is a true hero too all of us at Tilden High School and the PASL would be wise to have his program expanded.' 10/30/03 NY Post: Big East vents anger at Boston College. 10/30/03 Anthony Nicodemo:Westchester's Best Fall League Semi-Finals will take place this Sunday, November 2 at Pace University. Bussey Brooklyn-Queens Warriors(Scholars Through Sports Foundation): 'Over the last weekend, my team competed in the Rebounds 1 Fall Classic in Neptune, New Jersey. I would like to thank Dennis Gregeory and his staff for their hospitality this weekend. We lost in the championship game against the New Jersey All-Stars 66 - 62. Jamaal Smith had a great all-around tournament. Jamaal averaged 20 points per game(including 24 and 25 points in the semi's and finals respectively) and contributed numerous assists and rebounds in every game.Jamaal is a 6'1" guard out of LaSalle Academy. Jamaal is a legitimate D - 1 prospect. More impressive, Jamaal has maintained a 85+ gpa and has the SAT scores to qualify for a D1 scholarship. Greg Willis of Health Profession also played very well throughout the Rebounds 1 tournament. Greg is 6'5" and is another D1 prospect. Michael Dodd (Hillcrest) and Richard Baptiste (St. John's Prep 11th grader) contributed to the success of the team. Overall, the Brooklyn-Queens Warriors ended the AAU season with an impressive 17 - 7 record. I would like to thank all the boys that played for me throughout the long ardous AAU season. More later. 10/26/03 NYHoops: IS 8 Seminfinals.Web note: Game starts at noon. If you get to the gym at about 11:30 and no one is there, you forgot to set your clock back an hour! 10/26/03 Daily News: Xaverian's 6-9 Mike Davis commits to Pitt. 10/26/03 NJ Hoops: Albert Forbes, the 6 foot 5 power player from All Hallows High School in New York has made a commitment to attend L.I.U. next season. 10/25/03 Pete Edwards: 'Mount Vernon defeated Rock Steady 76-74. High scorers Keith Benjamin 26, Jonathan Mitchell 13, Dexter Gray 11. Rock Steady - Dwight Gooding 24, Vernon Goodridge 17, Basil Leslie 11. Players Club survived Bedford YMCA 89-83. High scorers Kyle Lowry 26, Sean Singletary 23, J.R. Smith 14, Shane Clark 13. Bedford YMCA - Levance Fields 20, Terrance Portis 19, Jamel White 11, Eugene Lawrence 10.' 10/25/03 Happy Madison: 'Mt Vernon just got by Rock Steady in overtime 76-74. Keith Benjamin was the difference down the stretch. He led Mt with 26 points. Jon Mitchell had 13, Dexter Gray had 11. For Rock Steady Dwight Gooding was very good today - he had 24. Vernon Goodridge had 17, Basil Leslie 11 and Stanley Branch had a number of highlight reel dunks for Rock Steady. In game 2 Playaz Gold just got by Bedford in a really close game all the way through. Final score Playaz Gold 89 Bedford Y 83. Playaz were led by Kyle Lowry 26, Sean Singeltary 23, JR Smith 14 and Shane Clark 13. Most people in attendance thought the game was going to be lopsided but Bedford played well. In the end the Playaz backcourt of Lowry and Singeltary were just too much to overcome. Bedford was led by Lavance Fields 20, Terrance Portis 19.' 10/25/03 Philly.com: Dougherty's Kyle Lowry leaning toward 'Cats. Web note: Kyle plays for Playaz Gold at IS8. The semis are today with Rock Steady vs. Mt Vernon at noon and Bedford Y against the Playaz Gold at 1:30. Earlier stories are on the IS8 Tip-Off Classic 2003 page. 10/25/03 Philly.com: Timber Creek's Kyle Hines, one of the top forwards in South Jersey, has accepted a basketball scholarship from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. 10/25/03 Shawn McCray: 'Tyrone Pullins who attends Bloomfield High in NJ was left off of your 2005 list. Tyrone is 5'10 point man with good handle, very aggressive defense, unlimited range on his jumpshot, and a pure leader. Loves to have his hands on the ball with the game is on the line. Tyrone played his freshman season at Malcolm X. Shabazz in Newark and started varsity the final 7 games. Due to academic problems he sat out his sophomore year. He transferred to Bloomfield High in the process and has his grades in order and will play this coming season. He plays AAU for the Newark Zoo Crew and starts in the backcourt with St. Patrick's SR. Desmond Sanders. Duquan Leonard was left off the list for 2007. Very good point guard with tremendous ball control, great defense, and good leadership on the court. Plays up tempo with the best of them and tough to stop in transition. Duquan will play varsity this year at Newark Central and will likely start the point position. Led the Zoo Crew 14-u team to 6 championship games in 2003 winning 4 of them. Remember the name.' 10/24/03 PrepStars: Ronald Ramon, a 6-0 PG from Bronx (NY) All Hallows, committed to Pittsburgh, while 6-7 WF/BF Alex Galindo, a star at Newark (NJ) St. Benedict's, chose UTEP. 10/24/03 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): Our 11 and under team played at halftime of the Knicks vs Jazz at the Garden last night. We were too strong for the Jamaica YMCA Boys & Girls, they didn't score, or we just played well on defense. It was a great experience for the children, and they will never forget about it for the rest of their lives. They got a chance to see NBA players practice before the game, sitting on the Garden floor, and receiving autographs from Keith Van Horn, coach Herb Williams and Knicks trainer Mike Saunders. The outstanding players for the game were Jimmy Louissaint and Nhil Menard. We would like to thank Mr.Steve Board, director of The Flatbush YMCA, for allowing our team a chance to play at the Garden.' 10/24/03 Brooklyn Scout: 'More JUCO news on Jermaine Maybank, Rodney Epperson and Danny Gray. 10/24/03 The site's search engine above returns 29 hits for Epperson. Rodney's profile is on the class of 2000 page. That group was headed by Eddie Griffen, Omar Cook, Andre Barrett and Taliek Brown. 10/24/03 NYHoops: IS8 Final 4 Preview. 10/24/03 NY Post: Ronald Ramon commits to Pitt. And Storm lands 6-7 forward Rodney Epperson. 10/24/03 Daily News: Ronald Ramon heads to Pitt. 10/24/03 Newsday: LaSalle's Epperson Headed to St. John's. 10/24/03 Keith Mason: 'Ronald Ramon and Mike Davis have both given verbal committments to Pitt. Davis' committment is interesting considering he hasn't played a second on varsity, it is also the earliest committment I can remember from a New York City area player. Pitt is also looking to add Ramel Bradley and Juan Diego Palacios, two more New York players. Once again this shows Mike Jarvis and Co. just aren't getting it done in their own backyard, while schools like Pitt and Villanova rack up on the New York City talent.' 10/24/03 Gary Sims: 'The Past, The Present, and The Future --: Three of New York Citys top players have given verbal commitments to Big East schools. The Past: 69 Rodney Epperson who attended high school at LaSalle Academy, Redemption Christian Academy and Maine Central Institute and college at Barton CC in Kansas and now at Midland CC in Texas has given a verbal commitment to St.Johns University. Epperson was one of the top players at Barton CC last year and is the #9 ranked small forward JUCO prospect in the country and attends Midland CC this year. 60 Ronald Ramon a senior point guard at All Hallows HS in the Bronx has given a verbal commitment to attend the University of Pittsburgh starting next year. A crafty point guard and deadly outside shooter, Ramon played his AAU basketball with the NY Gauchos throughout his basketball career winning national championships in different age groups. He was the starting point guard on their #1 ranked AAU team over the summer, and is one of the 3 Amigos (Ronald Ramon, Russell Robinson and Sundiata Gaines). He also is a high honorable mention selection in this years Street & Smiths college basketball magazine. The Future: 69 Mike Davis a junior center at Xaverian HS in Brooklyn has also given a verbal commitment to attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall of 2005. An inside presence on defense and offense Davis was a teammate of Ronald Ramon this summer with the NY Gauchos and along with the 3 Amigos, other teammates, and good coaching helped put the program back on top. Davis is also one of the top Class of 2005 ranked players in New York City and after this year on varsity will probably be one of the Top 100 players in the country. This is definitely a good look for the Big East. Good luck to these players, and to their present and future coaches in the upcoming season.' 10/23/03 Coach Germaine (coach G) Baron of Starrett City has clarified the details behind his team's IS8 forfeiture after their quarterfinal win. There was concern before the game that Angelo Whitehead, their 6-4 forward was enrolled at the two year school, TCI making him ineligible. Angelo and his mother both assured coach G and the team that he was not in the school. Angelo played, Starrett won and the team left for another tournament. Later on that day a TCI assistant coach, Gary Sims confirmed that Angelo was indeed at TCI and the player fessed up. Too late for Starrett. Pete Edwards declared the forfeit and awarded the Ravens the quarterfinal spot against Playaz Gold. Web note: The IS8 semis are on Saturday with Rock Steady vs. Mt Vernon at noon and Bedford Y against the Playaz Gold at 1:30. Earlier stories are on the IS8 Tip-Off Classic 2003 page. 10/23/03 Coach Ron Naclerio: 'Public schools can begin their practices on the fourth Monday of October. That's next Monday.'
10/23/03 Courier News: Albert Fisher headed to James Madison. 10/23/03 Anthony Nicodemo: Week 7 schedule on the Westchester's Best Fall League page. 10/23/03 Edwin Morales: 'Justin Cruz a 6'1" graduate of St.Dominic's Grammar School should be added to your class of 2007. An excellent post player, having dominated as an 8th grader. Playing against some of the young men listed, just ask Visitation how good he is. Is attending Mgsr. Scanlan and will be playing JV as a Freshman. St Dominic's is the Grammar School which provided us with Richard Jackson and Brian Laing of St Raymonds.' 10/23/03 Humberto Corredor Jr: 'Afam Muojeke (6'2 - Class 2005) is at McClancy High School. His situation was worked out and he has been attending school. He's a kid who had some big games against St Ray's, Christ the King on JV last year for McClancy. Watch for Afam and his smooth jumper this year, he should be a solid player for coach Kent.' 10/22/03 Hoop Scoop: 'It ... appears to be a two-horse race between Villanova and Arkansas for 5'11 Kyle Lowry from Philadlephia (Cardinal Dougherty) PA, who is ranked #26 nationally in the senior class by the Hoop Scoop. However, when it is all said and done, our guess is that Lowry will pick the Wildcats. As a matter of fact, Lowry confirmed to us at the Eddie Griffin Challenge on Sunday that Villanova getting his close friend and teammate - 6'6 Jr Shane Clark from Philadelphia (Cardinal Dougherty) PA - helped Wildcats' chances and that they were the team to beat.' 10/22/03 Journal News: Ryan Schneider chooses Vermont. 10/22/03 Dr. Lester B. Burman: 'For your class of 2005 you left off Johnathan Dixon. He is repeating his junior year and is now graduating 2005. He is going to Lawrenceville Prep and will play this year with Noah and Whitehurst. He is a A student and he is now 6'5.' 10/22/03 Edwin Morales: 'I am writing to let you know of one more player that should be added to the class of 2005, His name is Benjamin Bowman and plays with Emanuel Garcia at Cardinal Spellman. These two should provide Spellman with some added excitement for the next two years. At 6' 3" 1/2 and a strong PF (And still growing) With Garcia who is 6' 3" SG they have some serious height for those other "B" Division teams to deal with.' 10/21/03 Coach Phil Diasparra -Westchester Hawks: 'Ryan Schneider is a 6'6" WF that has played with the Westchester Hawks over the last 3 years. Ryan is very long and plays bigger than 6'6". He is one of the best shooters I have seen and can put it in the hole from anywhere. He has a great basketball IQ and makes the players around him better. Ryan has been a great example of a student/athlete and has represented the Westchester Hawks, his teammates and himself with class. He has been offered several scholarships and has made a verbal committment to Vermont. Ryan, congratulations.' 10/21/03 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'The First Annual S. J. Tilden High School Athletic Department Fundraising dinner will be held on Tuesday, November 4th, 2003 at Massimo's Restaurant located at 2147 Mill Avenue, between Avenue U and Strickland Avenue. Tilden High School Athletic Department Fund or by calling me at Tilden at 718-451-2418.Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the night of the dinner.' 10/21/03 InsidersHoops: 'Eddie Griffin Challenge 2006: N.J. 82, Philly 75. In sophomore game Zoubek, Ellington take home MVP trophies... Jawan Carter was slated to play with the New Jersey team but the standout has transferred from St. Benedicts to Wilmington (DE) Tatnall. Hes originally from the First State.' 10/21/03 Richard Vetere: 'This past Saturday I promised my wife no ball, so I just decided to take a drive and wait for the Yankee game. I knew there was a tournament at Poly Prep and I was thankful I was on the other side of Brooklyn. One Starbucks cup later I was driving past PolyPrep. I told myself "don't stop" "don't stop". LOL I stopped. I grab a seat and I am shaking my head because I see this little kid unload a bomb beyond half court, "its got no chance I'm saying to myself, it rolls out, so now I'm saying kid is small but strong. In watching this game I cant keep thinking to bad this kid is small. He could dribble, pass, shoot the lights out but was the smallest kid on the court by a foot. The game was Queens Rimrodkers vs. Long Island Lighting. I really shook my head when I found out that short kid Mark Parisi is a 5th grader at IS 125 playing with 8th graders. Turned out the short kid is not at all that short and was the tallest on talent on the court. Mark keep it up. I'll be looking out for you in the future.' 10/21/03 Dan Wiatre: 'I just wanted to thank you for the exposure for my league. The league is going very strong and the talent level is great. I have alumni from many of the area high schools in the league (Nazareth, St. Edmund's, Xaverian, Bishop Ford, Madison, Transit Tech, Canarsie, Christ The King, McClancy, Sheepshead Bay, Xavier, Erasmus, Lincoln, Grady, Loughlin, St. Dominic's, South Shore to name a few.) There are over 60 former Division 1 and 2 players playing in the league. Former Nazareth coach Ted Gustus Jr. came by to make an appearance and see some of his former players last Sunday and Monday as well. Registration is now taking place for the next season beginning in early January. The league website address is www.hometown.aol.com/bbnl03/bbnl.html.' 10/20/03 Peter Fuhrman, Tournament Director, St. Gregs Fall Classic Hamilton Square, New Jersey: 'St. Raphaels wins the 2nd annual St. Gregory the Great Fall Classic. In a double overtime championship game, St. Raphaels defeated Our Lady of Sorrows 58-57. With Julian Diaz putting on a Reggie Miller-like performance, OLS eliminated an 11 point 4th quarter deficit. However, in the end, Tournament MVP Anthony LaLota brought the title to St. Raphaels.' 10/20/03 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): 'On Saturday in the Riverside Church Basketball Tournament our 11th & 12th grade team played games back to back. The first game was a blowout with Sean Watson putting on a shooting clinic, outscoring MLK"s entire team by himself on 11 three pointers, 37pts total. Max Menard controlled the action, playing a complete all around game, and scored 25pts. The second game against Willie Howie"s all stars was a diffrent one. We started out a little slow and the three pointers weren"t falling.so we started to go inside and slow the game a bit, and then we took the lead for the rest of the game. Max Menard, Sean Watson were the high scorers On Friday at Erasmus Hall High School Gym, in the Screenteam Fall Basketball Tournament, 13 and under division FYA defeated MB Warriors by the score of 31 - 12 , and in the 16 and under FYA defeated MB Warriors by the score of 38 - 27. I want to give Coach Tyrone Hester his due, here is a young man showing great responsibility, coaching and traveling with his teams from Queens, to play in our tournament. He does a better job than some of the adults who I have been able to witness.' 10/17/03 Brooklyn Scout: 'Elijah Muldrow, a 6-2 shooting guard at Ventura (CA) JC, has given a verbal commitment to Arkansas-Little Rock for the 2004-05 season. As a freshman last season, Muldrow received All-State honors after leading the Pirates to a pair of wins over state champion Los Angeles City and a 23-7 overall record. He averaged 12.7 points while shooting 46% from the floor and 32% from the three-point line. He was recognized as one of the top guards this summer at the Entertainers' Basketball Classic in Harlem (NY), which draws numerous NBA players, and was featured in the Jet and Source magazines. The Queens (NY) native enters the 2003-04 campaign ranked as a 5th-team JUCO All-American by Street & Smith's (Tony Jimenez). Muldrow also received interest from St. Bonaventure, Utah State, Kansas State, Oregon and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.' 10/20/03 NJ Hoops: NJ drops two at Eddie Griffin Challenge. 10/20/03 Anthony Nicodemo: Week 6 Results and playoff seedings on the Westchester's Best Fall League page. 10/20/03 Anthony Blake Director of Educational Services & Summer Programs for BCNY: 'The Boys Club of New York (BCNY) is holding tryouts for its Academic All Stars next week October 21, 22 & 23. Ron Robinson was named First Team All-NEC and Preseason All-Conference scored 12.7 points and led the team and conference with 9.2 rebounds last year. Ron is on his way to scoring over 1000 points and grabbing 1000 rebounds. Dante Milligan, a freshman, looks to get some playing time at the three and is a legitimate 68 three point threat. Pittsburg is loaded with big men, but Dante may turn out to be a blessing for Pitt because he will be a tough match up. Carl Elliott, also a freshman, continues to surprise as he racks up one more accolades in addition to winning the NEPSAC Class A Championship and receiving MVP honors for Worcester Academy in March. Carls summer league team won the Kenner League in Washington D.C. and he also won the leagues MVP. Carl, a legitimate 64 point guard, will be the surprise of the year.' 10/20/03 Humberto Corredor Jr: 'Class of 2005 - Jamel Ferguson (6'4 187lbs) Berkshire Prep. Telfair to Louisville 10/16/03 Coach Roberto Diaz, NYC Finest: 'Nicholas Jones, a 6'2" 185 lbs guard from Hillcrest HS, was probably the best player overall in his high school division last year averaging 24ppg and leading Hillcrest HS to last year upset of Cardozo at Hillcrest that secured them a spot in the playoffs. A great student athlete and one of the best in his class. He has shown to be one of the best in his class petty much everywhere he has played. Many of those being ranked have played against him and know of him. He does also have an 80+ academic average so his choices will be a lot greater than most, not to mention a great attitude! Nick played in I.S. 8 and had a great season specially our last game vs SONDAY Express in the 2nd round of the playoffs. I do consider him one of the top players in NYC area at the SG position. My expectations are high and I think he is going to have a great senior season this year in the PSAL. I know he gave a lot of his time to conditioning and working out over the summer and it shows; it has paid off. Basketball is not all about just playing the game but also preparing for it, keeping in mind to stay on top of your academics, and I am happy to see he has done just that while with our program. A great role model for our younger divisions as well as any kid seeing him on and off the court!' 10/16/03 Eddie Oliver - HoopsUSA: 'My annual HoopsUSA High School Tournament and Events Report is ready to be mailed out. Thompkins will repeat the 8th grade and should be put into the class of 2008. He was one of 80 kids to be invited to the junior ABCD camp in New Jersey this summer.' 10/11/03 The first three IS8 games this morning were about handicapped losing teams as the Ravens, Riverside Church and Woodmere Academy lost to Starrett City, Real Scout and Playaz Red. The Ravens played without their two tallest players, 6-8 Frank Elger and 6-6 Gavin Grant Meanwhile all five Starrett City starters - Thomas Monzano (team high 16 points for the 6-3 Carnasie freshman forward), Saquon Stone (15 from the always dependable Xaverian guard), point guard Tim Weeks (12), and nine each from Angelo Whitehead and Brian McMickle - chipped in for the 79 - 71 win. Brian Laing (23), Ricky Torres (14) and Dante Chisolm (10) were best for the Ravens. The Church arrived late for the second game and were penalized by beginning the game down 0 - 16 in the second quarter. They were tied at 74 with a minute left in the game but Ricky Cadell (17) hit six for six free throws to seal the 80 - 77 Real Scout win. The Church's point guard, Elvis Lora had 15 and center Arturo Dubois got a game high 24. But when 'turo fouled out with 58 seconds left that was too much of a handicap for the Church. Many of the Woodmere Academy seniors took the SAT exam this morning and two of them never made it to the game against the Playaz Red (younger) team. They still jumped off to a 22 - 13 first quarter lead before being overwhelmed by the Playaz talent, losing 71 - 55. Gerald Henderson (21), JR Inman (16) and Andrew Pusar (11) led the Playaz, while point guard Jonathan Han (20) and center Dmitri Razin (13) were high for Woodmere. 10/11/03 BOOKSNBALL: 'The Lions are on their way back. No, not another big cat on the loose in city housing! The Columbia University Lions that is. Joe Jones, the new head coach at Columbia University (via Hofstra & Villanova) gave every indication, at the PSAL's final boys basketball coach's clinic last night, that Columbia basketball is in good hands. His demonstration of fundamentals, shooting and ball handling drills was enthusiastically received by the over 40 PSAL coaches attending. (for some coaches this was the 3rd clinic this week!) All four clinics were very successful and our aspiring high school city hoopsters should reap the benefits! Next week, a series of clinics will be held for PSAL girl's coaches (JV & Varsity) the first one starts on Tuesday, Oct. 14tth at 4:30 at Cardozo high school. The presenter will be Coach Felisha Legette-Jack of Hofstra University. "Prof" Blood -- Passaic 1920's coaching -- with new book his legend lives on. 10/10/03 BOOKSNBALL: 'The 3rd PSAL Clinic this week for J.V. & Varsity Coaches went from potential disaster to triumph within 24 hours. Derek Whittenburg, the new Fordham Univ. coach had confirmed he would participate weeks ago, called and stated he had a "scheduling conflict." Fordham is 15 minutes form the clinic site (JFK H. S.) and an assistant coach wasn't even able to fill in. Well, help came in the form of Greg Vatrone, the local representative for the prestigious "Coaches vs. Cancer" organization. Greg had been an assistant college coach for 16 years at C.W. Post, FDU, UNLV & U.C. Irvine. He currently coaches the "Coaches vs. Cancer" exhibition team which plays preseason games against top Division I colleges & universities. He's nationally known as a great teacher of the game & it was clearly evident by the number of coaches ( 40+) taking notes about the workout drills he demonstrated, that his reputation is well deserved. The PSAL was relieved that they were able to get such a quality coach to step in at the last moment. The last clinic of the series will be held, Friday 10/10 at Manhattan Center H.S. for Sci. & Math (East 116th Street). Joe Jones of Columbia Univ. will be the presenter. the clinic starts at 4:30 p.m. Lets hope the coaches attending the clinics this week will transfer the information, ideas and drills they picked up to their teams. The level of NYC high school hoops can only benefit if they do! Kudos to Donald Douglas Assistant Director of the PSAL, Basketball Commissioner, Mel Goldstein & Asst. Commissioner, Artie Leitner for all of their efforts that made the clinics a success.' 10/9/03 Brooklyn Scout: 'JUCO report from Big Apple Sports 10/9/03 Brooklyn Scout: 'Bedford YMCA needed overtime to advance to the second round of the IS 8 Tip-Off Classic playoffs, pulling out a 92-89 win over Holy Cross. Bedford overcame a slow start to open a 45-32 halftime lead, before Holy Cross fought back behind Marvin Roberts (game-high 27 points) and Vernon Teel (21 points). The Knights pulled ahead in the final minutes and Bedford needed a put back by Levance Fields just before the regulation buzzer to force the extra session. Akeem Comas led the winners with 18 points while Jamel White added 16, Terrance Portis had 13 and Fields finished with 12. In the first game, Riverside coasted past JYO 80-59 behind Herbie Allen (23 points), Desean Grant (19) and Arturo Dubois (15). Nick Flagg and Drew Gladisone topped JYO with 15 points each while Skyler Khaleel scored 12.' 10/9/03 PrepStars: 'Villanova got a junior commitment from Shane Clark, a slender 6-8 forward from Philadelphia (PA) Cardinal Dougherty. Clark is a promising talent in his own right, and the Wildcats hope to add an even bigger fish, PG Kyle Lowry, a top-50 senior who is Clark's high school teammate. ... Mobile big man Joakim Noah will announce Saturday for Florida, Villanova or Maryland. ...' 10/9/03 BOOKSNBALL: 'The PSAL is 2 for 2 with another quality clinic conducted for it's J.V. & Varsity coaches at Cardozo High School. Coach Mike Jarvis of St. John's University spent over sixty minutes talking to a SRO group of PSAL coaches. He spent a great deal of time sharing his background with them & the fact that he takes great pride in the fact that he was a high school coach. He went over some of the values orientated methods he uses to teach his players about responsibility and preparing themselves for life beyond basketball. He really opened the hospitality door to the coaches by inviting them to attend a practice in the upcoming weeks. He "chalk talked" about the flexibility of his offense & emphasized putting the ball in the hands of those players who can do the most with it. All and all, coach Jarvis did a great job for the PSAL and the attending coaches. Two more PSAL clinics remain, Thursday at J.F.K. high school in the Bronx and Friday at Manhattan Center for Sci. & Math. Starting time for both clinics is 4:30 p.m.' 10/9/03 Eddie Oliver, HoopsUSA: 'I am almost through with my annual High School Basketball Tournament and Events Report which covers almost one-hundred-fifty events. We hope to see you all there.' 10/8/03 BOOKSNBALL: 'The PSAL presented a winning Basketball Clinic yesterday at Leon Goldstein H.S.on the campus of Kingsboro C.C. Over 40 JV & Varsity coaches were in attendance to hear New York favorite (Syracuse-N.Y.Knicks) Louis Orr, coach of the Seton Hall Pirates going over the multiple use of the pick & roll in a team's offense. He spoke about conditioning drills, time management for all student-athletes and the importance of working hard to achieve one's goals. The clinics continue today with Coach Mike Jarvis of the NIT Champions St. John's University Redstorm appearing at Cardozo H.S. The clinic starts at 4:30. The clinics continue on thursday at J.F.K. High School in the Bronx and Friday's clinic will be held at Manhattan High School for Sci. & Math. (East 116th St.) conducted by Coach Joe Jones of Columbia University. Included in each clinic is a presentation on the new basketball rules for the 03-04 season and a session on helping each student-athlete develop a "Game Plan for Success." Another positive sign for the PSAL & city hoops. All coaches will be wise to make one of these clinics.' 10/8/03 NJ Hoops: Derrick Caracter stars in All Star clash. 10/7/03 The team section on this site is currently for AAU teams. Guard trio conquers summer, looks to future. AAU teammates Sundiata Gaines, Russell Robinson and Ronald Ramon, won four tournaments, including New York's IS-8 and a Nike tournament in Houston. 10/7/03 John P Miciotta: 'According to both published reports and informed sources two quick and strong post players from our region are now at new prep schools. Frantz Dorsainvil a physical 6'8" 250 lb forward who played for two seasons at Elizabeth (NJ) HS has surfaced at Winchendon School in Massachusetts after spending last season at Notre Dame Academy. He is a big time athlete with a strong body and quick leaping ability. While he needs work offensively he's capable of contributing as a rebounder and defender at the highest levels of college basketball. Another fine Garden State big man, 6'9" Stanley Branch has also resurfaced and will spend this season at Philadelphia Lutheran Prep. The former Atlantic City High and St. Benedict's star will combine with Brooklyn native Vernon Goodridge to give Philly Lutheran good rebonunding and a terrific defensive presence around the basket. Finally, with apologies to our readers I must make two corrections with respect to items reported earlier this summer. Please know that we checked the info thoroughly and got the original info from 3 sources. However circumstances changed and now, we will post corrections. First, athletic forward Kiwan Smith of Schenectedy, who we reported would play at Bishop Loughlin will instead be at Laurinburg (NC) Institute. Smith is an agile forward with facing skills who should draw mid and high major looks. While Loughlin may have missed out on immediate help, they got a terrific player for their future. Marcus Matthews the fine shooting guard from the class of 2007 who we originally reported was at Molloy will instead begin his high school career at Loughlin. He will combine with heady point man Darius Gabriel to form one of the city's best young backcourts.' 10/6/03 Brooklyn Scout: 'Daniel Artest, a 6-5 power forward from Queens (NY), has transferred to Westchester (NY) CC for his sophomore year.
