Gray had 18, and Benjamin had 19. Rajon Rondo had 25 points and 10 assists for Oak Hill. Josh Smith (who is going straight to the league) had 23 points on 10-13 shooting. Once again Mt. Vernon led by 9 going into the 4th quarter but Antwan Hardy shot the lights out hitting 8-11 from deep in the game and finishing with 24 big points. What is going on in The AAU and the travel team world? What ever happen to players playing for just one basketball program? It used to be that kids would stick with one program not change every time a tournament came up. But its not all the kids fault. Some coaches who know that kids play for other programs still dont respect the work and time that programs put in. To all the coaches who dont have sponsors and pay for tournaments out of their own pocket so there kids dont have any expenses dont give up. I know some tournaments that are considered to be top tournaments in New York City charge an extremely high entry fee for 5 games and playoffs and put a $30 fee on top of it for officials. If we are all in this for the kids why do we down talk programs to make or program look better. Why all the players we rank play for teams with major sponsors like Riverside Church, New York Gauchos but overlook players on teams with out major sponsors like NYC Finest and T.K All-stars. I think it is time for us as a whole to work together so the kids can benefit from the many basketball programs around NYC ' 12/10/03 Newsday: Rebuilt Cardozo More Confident. Glenn Thomas is in his first year as the varsity coach. I have known Glenn my entire life. We grew up together in Park Slope and have spent so much time involved in the greatest sport in the world. I have never met any one with more knowledge on the game then Glenn. His passion for the game truly shows after talking with him for just a few seconds. Glenn played high school basketball at Ford. He then went on to play at York College of Pa. but later transferred to St. Francis College of Brooklyn. A knee injury caused him to end his playing career but then SFC head coach Jim Valvano took him on and under his wing. Glenn also spent time with Rich Zvosec, who is currently the head coach at UMKC. Besides his college coaching career, Glenn has also coached overseas. Bishop Ford is getting an outstanding basketball mind, but most important, they are getting a coach who cares about the game, and the players. Best wishes go out to Coach Thomas! You may not be aware that Kyle and Philly MJC (his AAU team which also beat a Westchester Hawks team w/ Doug McClure in the Rumble in the Bronx 16 and Under Championship two years ago!) won the Spiece Run and Slam taking out Ft. Sooy - No Limit, w/ this summers ABCD MVP 6'7 PG Shaun Livingston in the quarterfinals, and the Detroit based Family (two top 50 prospects and maybe 5 or 6 D-1 recruits on that squad) scoring 41. But what will make it interesting is that Kyle can and does play defense. Will he be effective vs Sebastian? I will be there to see. And in addition Jan 31 in Arcadia College (Glenside, Pa.) Kyle will go against his backcourt mate from that Playaz team, Sean Singletary as Cardinal Dougherty plays Penn Charter. Now that will interesting!' 12/5/03 Coach Tom Sampogna: 'Jamie Procino 6'4 2G from Yorktown HS. Jamie is a classic shooting guard who will be among the top 5 of the scoring leaders in Westchester this year. He averaged 20 ppg last year and opened this year with 34pts. against Roosevelt a win on Tues. Jamie is a D1 shooter with size and strength. He is being recruited by D1's like Hartford, Central Conn. and a host of high level D2 schools. He played very well this summer at camps and for his AAU team, CT Flame. People who did see him play, saw him light up the Fall League at Pace for 25+ppg. This kid is a sleeper in the recuitiong world. Coach Khalid Green got his first victory today at the men's varsity level versus a tough Grady High School in the Kangaroo Classic at Pratt Inst. (Brooklyn, NY). This one was tight throughout with Grady jumping out in the first with tough pressure defense going up (9-0) before a quick timeout by Coach Green. Loughlin survived the storm and trailed (15-14) after one. The second quarter was a real battle with Loughlin taking a few more knockout punches from Grady but stood up to the challenge to go into the half leading (32-31). Grady came out in third and turned the contest into the Basil Leslie show who scored (10) pts. in the quarter to lead (49-46) going into the fourth. Desean Gist and Herbie Allen of Bishop Loughlin took over with two plus minutes remaining in the game with dribble penetration, speed and clutch free throw shooting while Adekun Olanrewaju and Todd Sowell dominated the glass to finish the deal. Serge Clement took a 21-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter and a commanding 37-23 lead at intermission. The Stanners made their run in the 3rd quarter tying the game at 44 points apiece but it was Serge Clement who hit the big 3 pt shot to regain the lead as St Johns Prep never looked back. Tournament M.V.P. went to Fordham U. bound center Bryant Dunston 14 pts 10 rebs and 5 blk shots. On the 1st night each city school fell to teams from upstate. Automotive took on Kingston High School in Friday night's opener. After trailing for most of the first half, Kingston went on a 9-0 run late in the first half behind the shooting of Artavius Fisher (27 points) who poured in 14 1st half points. The upstate squad never looked back as Auto could not knock the upstate squad's lead below 8 in the 2nd half. In the 2nd game Hunter hung tough with Albany, the host school through 3 quarters, until Albany poured it on in the 4th. On Saturday the two PSAL squads played a very entertaining consolation game as Coach Charlie Sewell's Hunter squad nearly battled all the way back from a 21 point deficit to put a scare into Auto before the Pistons prevailed 68-58, scoring the final 6 points of the game. Junior, Jovon Moses led Auto with 18 points and for the 2nd time in three games this year pulled down 21 rebounds. Hunter was led by Ian Jankowski's 18 points (including 4 three pointers). The best performance of the weekend certainly took place in the last game. Fisher scored an amazing 61 points in Kingston's 88-76 championship game win over Albany High! Fisher may be one of the best pure shooters I have ever observed in 13 years of High School coaching. I also want to give credit to the Albany High School Booster Club and the Athletic staff of Albany HS who reached out and invited both city schools upstate. They ran a fantastic tournament and displayed an unbelievable degree of hospitality towards all the visiting programs. Next year Murry Bergtraum is slated to represent the city at this event, and believe me it will be well worth it.'
