As the Knights were finishing off Lincoln for the Federation title and wrapping up another fantastic season, Ben Gordon was in the process of scoring 36 points to lead the University of Connecticut to the Final Four. Ben has scored 1,756 career points and has a school-record 242 3-pointers. He also has 433 assists and 410 rebounds over 104 career games. UConn is 81-23 with Ben in the lineup (including 9-2 in the NCAA tournament and 8-1 in the Big East tournament) and he has never missed a game. He is a testament to working hard on your game, not your name.

Mount Vernon kids don't worry about winning meaningless summer titles or individual awards, they just win when it counts. Congrats to Keith Benjamin, Dexter Gray, Shanty Robinson, Mike Coburn, Jon Mitchell, Chris Bradley, Chris Lowe, Mike Watson and the rest of the Knights. They, like Ben, are headed for big things because they learned from the best coach in the state.'

They produce great ball players but are never recognized. This kid now goes to Fordham Prep. He didnt play for the freshman team this year, because he wanted to set off his first year of HS well, but he is planning to play JV next year. 3/18/04 Coach Will Stasiuk: 'and so Lincoln HS makes PSAL history as the only team in PSAL history to win three titles in a row in three consecutive seasons! The other day I reminded the public that Clinton HS won three consecutive titles between 1916 and 1919, but that for some reason there was no city-wide basketball playoffs in the PSAL in 1917. The mystery as to why has been solved thanks to Jefferson HS soccer coach, Bill Sioukas. Sioukas reminds us that in 1917 there was an influenza epidemic that killed over 20 million people world-wide. As such, here in the city there were laws against large public gatherings for fear that the disease would spread even more. The PSAL elected to cancel high school sports, including the basketball playoffs because of this fear. (Just a little bit of interesting PSAL basketball history!) Congratulations to the kids at Lincoln as well as all the other hard-working athletes throughout the city on another fine year!'

3/17/04 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): 'I would like to give my opinon on who should get The Mr. Basketball New York City Award. I know some people might have another pick, but Basil Leslie from Grady High School plays basketball the way I think a varsity player should play. He plays Brooklyn, New York style basketball. He shouldn't look down at anytime, someone talks about the game Grady played on Saturday. He played his heart and soul every moment of that game. This is one player that the so called basketball experts have underrated. He will be on some college roster in the near future.'

3/15/04 Coach Will Stasiuk: 'In 1997 I began the 1st website www.psalhoops.com dedicated to PSAL boys basketball and its history. Thanks to many great people in the basketball community and hours and hours of research I have been able to add more and more past PSAL history over the years. I guess that sort of makes me feel like the unofficial local PSAL basketball historian. On that note I want to correct a popular misconception. It has been widely stated throughout the media and basketball related websites, that Lincoln is trying to become the 1st program to win 3 consecutive PSAL titles. In fact, that is incorrect. Clinton H.S. actually won 3 consecutive titles long ago. They won in three consecutive titles from 1916 to 1919. (There was no city championship playoffs in 1917 - I'd love to know the reason if anybody out there actually knows why.) This does not belittle or in any way minimize the great accomplishment that is within Lincoln's grasp, its simply a matter of history. Good luck to all the competitors on Wednesday!'

3/15/04 John P Miciotta: Seniors point the way for St. Ray's.

3/15/04 Daily News: St. Ray's two good. Keep poise in defense of crown. Upset Clippers expect to return as X-factors.

3/15/04 NY Post: St Ray's repeats as AS CHSAA champs.

3/15/04 NJO: Bloomfield Tech boys rely on Jason Wilson, Courtney Nelson for 67-60 victory. Haddonfield too tall a task for Summit. Lenape thwarts Plainfield, 63-46. Teamwork the difference for Raritan as starting five swarm Manasquan.

3/15/04 NJ Hoops: Defending Group 1 champs Bloomfield Tech repeated as champs with a hard fought 67 - 60 victory over Burlington City tonight at Rutgers in Piscataway.  And 6 foot 4 Sr. Matt Betley scored 32 points on 11 - 12 shooting and pulled down 18 rebounds to lead undefeated Lenape past Plainfield 63 - 46 tonight at the RAC in Piscataway in the State Group 4 championship.  Haddonfield ended the Cinderella run of surprising Summit 64 - 53 in the state Group 2 championship contest this afternoon. Raritan topped Shore Conference rival Manasquan 71 - 60 this afternoon in the Group 3 State title game.

3/15/04 Courier News: Lenape's height denies Plainfield Group IV title.

3/15/04 Courier Post: Team effort lifts Haddonfield. Every starter clutch as Bulldogs beat Summit for state title. Lenape makes dream reality. Matt Betley, Indians win state title, as storybook season continues. Lenape - Special team proves anything is possible.  Burlington City is stopped by veteran Bloomfield Tech.

3/14/04 St Raymond led by two, 35 -33 at halftime and then in the last 1:05 of the game hit eleven of twelve foul shots to beat Xaverian 56 - 42 and win the CHSAA City Championship at Fordham University this evening.

3/14/04 Booksnball: 'I hope all coaches (high school & community) go back and read the 3/13/04 Newsday story on coach Jack Agostino of perennial Long Island power Amityville H.S. There are many valuable lessons in there about what coaching entails inorder to develope a successful student-athlete in today's day & age. Take special note of his continued interest in attending clinics to gain more basketball knowledge that he can then apply to his player's/team development. It takes more then saying, "I once played the game" or watching the NBA/NCAA or God forbid, the and 1 Hoops tour, and think that it's enough! Coaches MUST enhance their skills to prepare their athletes and coach them. With that in mind, I hope that there will be a better turnout of "local" (NYC) high school coaches to attend this spring's (date to be announced) Super Hoops Clinic to be hosted by the Coaches Against Cancer organization. Last year not one NYC PSAL coach attended! Let's hope that never happens again. As many great coaches have said,. "It's not just about having the will to win, but having the will to prepare to win."

See ya at MSG Wednesday night (3/17) for Cardozo vs Lincoln at 7 p.m. preceded by the girls' title clash between Francis Lewis H.s. & nationally ranked (#3 in USA Today) Murry Bergtraum at 5 p.m. Enjoy!'

3/14/04 Coach Jason Salamanca: 'Congratulations to Cardozo and Lincoln High School, they have both lived up to the hype! Since September, the entire city has been predicting this final and yesterday the matchup was setup. Lincoln has the pressure of becoming the first team to win three years in a row, while Cardozo has the pressure of just stepping onto the Garden floor. If the Cardozo's Theo Davis and Skyler Khaleel can dominate the paint and stay out of foul trouble we could have a new champion. But if Sebastian and Pena play well they will be extremely tough to beat. The last couple of games Sebastian has struggled and Lawrence and Boateng have picked it up, a third lackluster game might prove to be costly. Congrats again to Ron Naclerio and Tiny Morton!'

3/14/04 Daily News: Cardozo, Lincoln reach final as Railsplitters claw Falcons.  Judges rule Sheepshead Bay Sharks and court. Dad: Telfair 'leaning toward' NBA.

3/14/04 NY Hoops: I got your back, if you got mine. Lincoln stops Grady in the semis.

3/14/04 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'Just a few thoughts on Saturdays Lincoln,Grady Game. The hardest working guys there were Vinnie Aceto and the WNYE crew. They really worked a lot of hours to help make all the players and coaches feel special. My thanks to them for all they do. Also the first quarter of the Lincoln, Grady game was really good basketball ; both teams looked poised and polished. As the game went on there were a lot of peaks and valleys but the end result was a good fast paced high school game with many great plays by both teams. It was fun to watch and enjoy the efforts of the players, coaches and referees. Thanks for a great season to everyone.'

3/14/04 NY Post: St Rays plays for title & redemption.

3/14/04 NJO: No. 1 St. Anthony victorious. Bloomfield Tech prepares to defend its NJSIAA, Group 1 title vs. high-octane Burlington City at 7:30 tonight at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway.

3/14/04 Courier Post: It's St. Augustine's day. Guards carry Hermits to crown in overtime against Seton Hall. Once again, Anthony Farmer (picture from Courier Post) steals the spotlight.  On Saturday, Farmer left the shiny, new Ritacco Center buzzed with a masterful 34-point performance in the state Parochial A final. The junior point guard pretty much willed the Hermits to a 69-64 overtime win over Seton Hall Prep.

3/14/04 NJO: No. 2 Seton Hall falls to St. Augustine, 69-64.   NJ Hoops: St. Augustine's edged Seton Hall Prep 69 - 64 in an overtime thriller in the Parochial A State Final.   Philly.com: St. Augustine wins Parochial A state crown.

3/13/04 Rodrick C. Bussey Brooklyn-Queens Warriors (Scholars Through Sports Foundation): 'I would like to congratulate Jamaal Smith for leading his LaSalle Academy team to upset victory over St. John Prep in CHSAA A championship game at Iona College. Jamaal is a great example of a scholar-athlete. Jamaal has a 90+ gpa and scored over a 1000 on his SAT. Jamaal is a player that should be recognized when the All Manhattan teams are announced in a few weeks. I would also like to congratulate the LaSalle Academy school community and Coach Aberer and his staff on job well done.'

3/13/04 Newsday: Coach, confidant & pal - Coach Jack Agostino may not be top tactical guy around, but caring personality and his ability to relate to kids make him No. 1.  Amityville again!

This past weekend in the Little Lads tournament in Hamilton N.J. we won another championship with our great 6th grade AAU team. 3/10/04 Brooklyn Scout: 'JUCO report from Big Apple Sports.

3/10/04 Coach Ron Dennis K.Y.D.A. 'St Johns Prep H.S. defeated Cardinal Spellman H.S. 46-42 in a very close game. It came down to the team that wanted this game the most. The game began in a 9-9 first quarter tie and a 22-22 tie at halftime. A toss in at the buzzer from reserve guard Oscar Haynes was needed to tie the game for SJP. The Red Storm found themselves playing catch up for most of the first half. It wasn't until the third quarter that SJP claimed a lead, 38-33 pts. The Falcons of Spellman H.S. wanted all to know that this game was going to be a tug of war because they refused to quit in this contest. SJP lost guard Chris Williams down the stretch due to fouls. The Bronx crowd became hostile and the momentum swung towards Cardinal Spellman H.S. SJP senior P.G. 3/10/04 Coach Victor Hall: 'Proud. There is no other way to describe the feeling. I know coaches from other organizations have experienced the same thing too. While sitting in the stands at Mt. St. Michaels on Tuesday night watching Cardinal Spellman play St. Johns Prep in the semifinals I began to count the number of young men on both teams who currently and previously competed with Keep Youth's Dreams Alive inc.(K.Y.D.A.)

From Spellman: Lateef McTaw, Brian Bonar and Benjamin Bowman. From St. John's Prep: Serge Clement, Terrell Cotton, Bryant Dunston, Jacques Fulcher, Gary Graham, Oscar Haynes, Eric Rosado, Richard Thomas, Chris Williams and Nathaniel Williams. Credit and praise for the development of most of these young men goes to one of K.Y.D.A. talent developers, Coach Ron Dennis. Over the years he has spent countless hours and gas transporting young men from all over the tri state area to the Bronx so they could work on their skills. He made sure they competed in events such as I.S.8, UDC, West 4th Street, Kenny Anderson's Tournament and individual skill camps. So when I mention being proud, it was not only for the young men who were playing, but also for one of K.Y.D.A. Inc's. coaches, Ron Dennis.'

3/8/04 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'I wanted to take this chance to praise the great hard working players of William E. Grady High School. Jamel White and company played hard, tough and smart all game long. However I must take exception to first year Grady Coach Mark Seltzberg's lack of understanding about the way to win with class. While I realize this may sound a bit weak after we were outcoached and outplayed by Grady all game long I must say that this seems to a pattern this year in some, not all parts of the PSAL While up by 35 points late in the 4th quarter Grady was still in a full court press! I I have been and will be again on both sides of these kinds of games in my 33 years as a coach on the AAU, high school and college levels, never have I seen such a display of lack of concern for an opponent as was put on by "Coach" Seltzberg. I understand the pride that the Grady team feels in being a great team full of wonderful young men who want to win a city title I wish them luck, however I can not wish "Coach" Seltzberg the same.'
