I the weekend of April 16, 2004, thru April 18, 2004. They were a 13th seed and went 2-1 in their pool. They followed up this performance in their next tournament, Chase the Game April 23, 2004, thru April 25, 2004. They were 3-1 in their pool. For the most part the Lightning team had a hard time finding an offensive rhythm, they managed to power the ball inside where their strength lies with center Brendan Mills, small forward Melsahn Basabe and power forward Hakeem Ali. Saturday they travelled to Fordham University for an early morning affair and played much better, it was a total team effort as they posted an impressive wins over last year's 10U Metro Regional runner-up Chase The Game-O'Toole (an 11U team playing up in this tournament). They finished off the tournament with a matinee game at Iona in New Rochelle where they trounced at seasoned and tough Westchester Hawk-Dicristafaro team 40-20. He showed off a variety of moves on the offensive side of the court, and great defensive moves. He was really outstanding; my read on this young man is he is a sleeper for the college level. On Tuesday night at The City Game Max Menard was outstanding showing his point guard skills, and court awareness. He plays hard at all times, has a good outside shoot, can run a team, and is a team player.' 4/22/04 Rich Kosik: 'Very inspring to read coach Roberto Diaz' recommendation to check out the USA Today story on the NCAA considering bold reforms in academics and recruiting. Hw gets it! Coach Diaz is being part of the solution and not the problem. I'm hoping more coaches will follow suit and get up to date with all of the new academic requirements our student athletes will most likely be facing as standards are increased and requirements change. I've often said that we (H.S. & outside coaches/parents) have to work toward being on the same page at the same time when it comes to assisting/inspiring our student athletes to recognize their priorities and take care of their responsiblities. Recogniton also has to be given to the Department of Education and the efforts of the PSAL & the new Middle School Sports program initiative in getting great information out to coaches, student-athletes and parents. As the information gets out there through established institutions and coaches like Roberto Diaz, JD Sullivan of Long Island & many others, we can lay claim to our area truly producing the best High School players and student-athletes! The 6'5" 215 pound swingman informed me that he will be attending Howard University in the Fall 2004. A former All City performer out of Erasmus Hall HS in Brooklyn, Ault averaged 32 ppg. in his senior year. He attended Chippola CC in Florida and Neosha CC in Kansas the past two years and didn't play, so he has at least 3 years of eligibility remaining. A solid scorer who can play either guard or small forward positions effectively, he should definitely help out Howard U. which was 6-22 last season.' 4/21/04 Dave Grossbard: 'Just a note of thanks to Mike Neely and all the folks from Staten Island Stingrays who ran a great tournament this past weekend at Tottenville H.S. for the 13U group. I read the post and was a little suprised not to see any Rockland players listed on the All-Tournament Team. The Rockland Rockets won the championship (4-0) and defeated another Rockland team (Hidden Skills) in that championship game. Both teams have numerous outstanding players yet none were recognized. In the first game against Manhattan, Wayne Turner had four first half blocks to stake the winners to a 29-20 halftime lead. Steady guard play from John McMichael, Tola Lawal and Jamal McCoy allowed Brooklyn to win going away by 20-plus to earn a place against Staten Island in the final. The chamionship game was never in doubt as great team defensive pressure helped Brooklyn USA jump out to a 31-13 lead that only grew throughout the game. Tola Lawal led the victors with 26 points as Anthony Thomas and Wayne Turner added 17 apiece. The team features big time players Andre Blache 6'10" who right now is as good as any big man in high school and prep in the country and Duke bound Greg Paulus who may be the best point guard in the class of 2005. The team also featured James (Bonecrusher) Tchana at 6'8, 290lb. who pulled down over 10 rebounds a game. We've got two sleepers in Benoit Bekono who had key blocks and rebounds against the Gauchos in probably the best game of the weekend won by 4 points and Jimmy O'Sullivan who hit some big three pointers and provided steady guard play throughout the weekend. The SRAP, NY Elite will be playing in Houston next weekend trying to pick up the 3rd consecutive win for the combined squad.' 4/19/04 Coach Harry Roth: 'The Bayside Titans Boys 16u team just got back from the Providence Hoop Group Jamfest where we went 3-0 in our pool and then went 2-0 in the play-offs to make it to the semi-finals where we lost a hard fought game to the Gauchos. We finished 5-1. The whole team played well .Gil Montalvo (St. Mary's) had 24 vs the Gauchos and averaged over 20 points and 8 assists for the tournament. Efe Mbala (St. Mary's) averaged a double-double in points and rebounds and Patrick Hazel (Bayside) averaged over 15 rebounds a game and had 12 blocks in our quarterfinal win. We had a total team effort with contributions from Sabastian Sabella (St. Mary's), Ryan Alexander (St. Mary's), Josh Marshal (St. Mary's), Eric Lastres (Molloy), James Mutlu (St. Mary's) and Kevin Garlan (Molloy) who had a big game vs the Gauchos. We were in the harder half of the bracket with the Gauchos and Playaz among others on our side of the draw. Our team did well and we look forward to the tournaments down the road.' 4/19/04 Coach Jason Salamanca, Boys Club OF NY: 'We competed at the Providence Jam Fest this past weekend in the 7th grade and 9th grade divisions. Our seventh grade lost a couple of close games to the CJ Jammers and RI Bubba Ball. But our 9th grade had an outstanding tournament, considering the team was just compiled in the last week and we had very little practice. We were 4-0 in pool play beating JS KBR twice, Providence United and Meadowlands BB fairly easily. We advanced to the final four to play a very tough Boston Blazers team, early on in the game Boys Club was dominating but the experience of the Blazer team took over and they won the game advancing to the finals. The Boys Club received great efforts by 6'3 Evion Gordon (Jamaica HS), 6'3 Kyle Church ( Jamaica HS), 6' 5 Jovan Mitchell, 6'1 Mikaal Shamsiddeen (Francis Lewis), 8th grader Antoine Forehand (St.Ann's in Manhattan), and 7th grader Brian Jones, both of whom are very underrated guards in their class.' 4/19/04 Thanks to coach Glen Steinberg the team page is updated with the Warriors profile on top and the rest of the teams listed alphabetically. The team lost 2 close games to St. Thomas More and the Student-Athlete Broncos. Jamaal Smith of LaSalle Academy had an excellent overall tournament including a 25 point game against the Broncos. Michael Dodd (Hillcrest) also had a solid tournament. Caesar McBean (Richmond Hill) did a good job of battling and competing during both games. Caesar is a 6'4" junior. B-Q Warriors 16 and under team will compete in the Sullivan Eagles Shootout this coming weekend in Liberty, New York.' 4/18/04 In today's second game at IS8 Rock Steady edged past NYC Finest as Slim Long (18), Adedkun Olawanreju (15) and Dwight Gooding (13) led the way while Nick Jones and Derek Williams each had 15 for Finest. Then Mount Vernon romped going wire to wire vs. the NYC Jaguars 79 - 58 as their dynamic duo, Mike Coburn (26) and Jonathan Mitchell (20) were tops for the Knights and only Alberto Rojas (15) got to double digits for the Jaguars. More scores on the IS8 Nike Spring High School Classic, 2004 page. 4/18/04 Coach Aaron Radin: 'At IS8 on Saturday Team Underrated showed up late and were down 16-0 to Brooklyn USA. It only got worse from there as the score ran to 28-0 and finished up 71-35 as Brooklyn USA ran their record to 3-0. Kaimondre Owes led a balanced scoring effort for the winners with 15 points. I haven't seen mention of CYO in your pages, but Sylvan was easily the best 8th grader in Brooklyn or Queens CYO this past season, leading his St. Andrew Avellino team to the Diocesan Intermediate title. I realize you emphasize High School ball, but you might want to cover the CYO championships each year, if only for a preview of the future prospects for the CHSAA. Another player that stood out was Chris Williams of St. John's Prep, although his St. Joseph's lost to St. Margaret Mary and Da' Vaughn Ellerbe (of Bryant HS and the RimRockers) for the junior title despite William's 36 points. Ellerbe had 26 for the winners. You can see some good basketball from the 4th grade on up, the title sites are usually Christ the King, Molloy and McClancy HS, and $5 gets you in to all games. The schedule is usually posted on the Queens CYO site.(www.queenscyo.org/basketball_index.html).' 4/15/04 Terence (t-bone) Johnson: 'Former Plainfield HS (NJ) standout Jihad "Da Cutta" Muhammad has signed on to play for Cincinnati next season. Kiwan Smith finished with 25 points to lead Brooklyn USA while Thomas added 22 and Eugene Lawrence scored 17. Boys 16u Champion competition at Basketball City on Saturday, April 17th. The Rivalry between the Springfield Rifles and the T.K. Allstars is alive an well! Last night's Queens PAL championship was another classic hard fought game, that went into overtime, before T.K. wore the Riffles down with a 78-77 victory. It's too bad there had to be a loser in this one. Both teams left all they had on the court last night! Ray Arnold finished with 30+pts for the Rifles, Jaquan Holley finished with 30+pts. for T.K. 4/15/04 Justin Kiczek: 'I have been running a charity three-on-three tournament in New Jersey for about 5 years. Our tournaments have attracted lots of talent, including several students from Seton Hall Prep (my alma mater). This year we are holding two tournaments: one for all ages on June 26 and another for just high school students on June 12 at Seton Hall Prep. Both tournaments promise to be pretty huge. Please send team information to nycnjhoops@aol.com. 4/14/04 LFBALL: 'New day in NYC college basketball. Norman Roberts comes home as the new hope and local hero. Honestly, they could not have chosen a better person. This guy is class with a capital "C". I still remember Norm playing for Springfield Gardens (I think he played with his brother) HS and honestly being a much better player than he was given credit for. Those articles make him out to be a scrub, but he was a very good player. But today, I want to not only acknowledge him, but a person behind the scenes who continues to develop kids with his own funds and great basketball knowledge. Norm, and his staff are all part of a certain group that were not always in the limelight. I guess you are wondering what group I am referring to. That group is the Running Rebels Basketball Program. Robert Boyd (Rebel), if I remember correctly played a big part in the success of all of the folks who have been mentioned as potential SJU coaches including Norman Roberts. Funny and interesting how things work out. I hope these guys give Rebel his due now. Folks need to see that no matter how big or small your program is, you can always make a difference and impact others. I think both Norman and Van (Hofstra Assistant rumored to be part of staff) played for Rebel in the past. Also, Rebel is very close with St. Francis associate coach rumored to be heading for SJU. Still remember Reb showing to games with those guys when it was more fashionable to be with BE and ACC coaches. I hope they now save a seat for Rebel as they are fighting off AAU and HS Coaches looking to become chummy. Good luck to Norman, who in my conversations with him (dating back to QC) , was always classy and personable. SJU is back!' 4/14/04 Gary Sims: 'College coaches looking for a dynamic New York City combo guard, look no further. You need to check out former Far Rockaway HS 2003 graduate 59 160 pound Richard Forbes. He scored the most points in the PSAL last year and 2,000+ points in his high school career. He also received the top scorer award in IS 8 and Pro Style tournaments. I met him last year after reading about him in the newspaper several times. I was running a 24 and under league and some players from Far Rockaway were frequenting my gymnasium. I asked if they knew him and gave them a team in the league based on them bringing him. He was the youngest player on his team, was the team leader (they didnt have a coach), led them and the league in scoring (they were undefeated), and was one of the top three players in the league. I spoke to him about playing with the NY Gauchos and explained the role he would have to play because they already had the Three Amigos Sundiata Gaines (Georgia), Ronald Ramon (Pittsburgh), and Russell Robinson (Kansas). By the end of the summer he had gained their respect and even forced his way into the starting lineup. His play was instrumental in the Gauchos success (#1 ranked AAU team in the country) last summer winning the Kingswood Classic in Texas, Rumble in the Bronx (he was Co MVP), the NIKE Super Showcase in Florida, and the Metropolitan Classic at CCNY. He also helped my team win in the Youngworld Tournament run by Rice coach Mo Hicks. He was scheduled to attend Philadelphia Lutheran Academy in the 2003/4 year, but things didnt work out, so he played on the BCNYs Academic All Star team and was one of their top players. He helped them to a third place finish, their highest finish ever, in their annual BCNY Holiday Classic that featured 15 prep schools from the East Coast and the BCNY team. He was named to the All Tournament team. In an overtime victory against Lawrenceville Prep featuring Joahkim Noah (Florida, 37 points) he scored 44 points, was 17 of 18 from the free throw line, and hit a step back 3 with under a minute to go putting the game into overtime. Forbes is a very talented and versatile player. Hes tough as nails, a leader on the court, defends fullcourt, takes charges, can create his shot off the dribble, hustles, hits the 3, has a midrange game, penetrates and finishes strong to the basket in traffic, finds open teammates, and will dunk on the fastbreak. Hes a partial qualifier (950 SAT) and will have to be a Proposition 48 admission. He would only like to attend junior college if that is his only option. For him to have to waste two years at that level would be a shame because hes a mid to high major Division 1 talent who can play with the best. For more information on Richard Forbes contact me at Grysims@aol.com or (917) 863-9459. LaSalle, URI, Campbell, San Jose State and SC State have expressed an interest. The New York comeback was ignited by the 3 point shooting of All Hallow's Ronald Ramon (Pitt) and team hustle for rebounds and loose balls. Question...... why were Dave McClure (Conn.H.S. Duke signee) and Courtney Nelson (Bloomfield Tech. New Jersey-Richmond signee) on this New York team over additional players from the PSAL?. Did anyone on the selection committee watch the PSAL play-offs? No one from Grady, Sheepshead, Cardozo, Boy's & Girl's was worthy? Derick Gabriel from Far Rockaway H.S. a high scoring senior pg wasn't considered? Nothing personal against whomever selected the New York team, but when the T.V. announcers kept talking about this great NYC vs Chicago rivalry and the Director of the Chicago Public School League was interviewed and he emphasized this rivalary, I couldn't help but wonder why only PSAL Championship MVP Eugene Lawrence of Lincoln H.S. was the only PSAL participant. The newly named Metro Hawks had a team in the semis for each of the 15 under, 16 under and 17 under Spring Fling semis but couldn't get the 'chip today. The Vince Carter Playaz cruised over Philly MJC 79-63 for the 16 under championship while D1 Sports of North Carolina nipped the Joe Walsh Lightning 72-68 in wonderfully played overtime affair. Word out of San Antonio filtered into the NYC/NJ area late last nite that it's a done deal. A St. John's Wall Street benefactor (Mr. Riley) who has put up $23 Millon+ for a new state of the art practice/fitness facility on the Jamaica campus is said to have thrown his full weight behind hiring Matt Doherty. Many SJU supporters are annoyed at the process which never really interviewed other candidates (Gonzalez, Calapari etc). They could have named Doherty months ago and he could have been out recruitng and rebuilding/repairing SJU relations in the high school and AAU hoops community. Time will tell if Doherty and a good staff (Fred Quaterbaum, Moe Hicks?) can get the Redmen back to the top in the Big East. I think everyone should give Doherty a fair shot at overcoming the problems he had at North Carolina. I think he's too intelligent a guy to make the same mistakes twice. I personally thought Bobby Gonzelez would have been a perfect fit for SJU, but now that it seems certain he will not get a interview & Doherty is the guy, he has to be given a fair shot by the hoop community here. NYC/NJ hoops needs a consistent strong high major NCAA D I team to fill the seats at MSG & get the area excited about our kids doing very well on the road to the Final Four. Manhattan will always be competitive given the program built there by Coach Gonzalez and lets hope they can become a Gonzaga East & contend every year, but NYC/NJ hoops need SJU hoops to get back up the ladder reaching for the top every year. Good luck to Matt Doherty from a open minded fan.' 4/4/04 NY Post: Why Doherty is no slam dunk for St. Johns. 4/4/04 Booksnball: 'The Frank McGuire Foundation 4th Annual High School Coaches Seminar takes place at Madison Square Garden (Theater Lobby) on Thursday, May 6th. The Playaz Gold team won a double overtime thriller 73-71 over Cecil Kirk as Juwan Carter hit an and 1 trey late in regulation to bring his team back. In earlier games Jonathan Mitchell had 24 and Herbie Allen 14 as the Metro Hawks (no longer the Riverside Church hawks) took Stamford X-Press 76-63. The LI Panthers took a mercy game (ahead by 20 with less than three minutes to play) from the New Jersey Wildcats. The Juice All Stars sans Sabastian bested National Christian Academy 77-69 behind Delroy Thomas (19), Marvin Roberts (16), Ronald Manigault (10) and Anthony Stukes (8). Coach Artie Green's Bronx Ravens outlasted Sam Rines 72-66 with Ricky Torres (24), Chris Bethel (14) and Elvis Lora (11) leading their scoring. The Bingo All Stars behind coach JR Rodriguez, late of Riverside Church got a mercy win 75-49 over the New York Wolfpack.
