Coach Keith Dickson's Hawks play in the Northeast 10 Conference, one of the nation's most competitive D-II leagues. By choosing St. Anselm's Rudy has found a school where he's almost certain to contribute immediately on the basketball court. He's also absolutely certain to find the kind of academics to challenge a bright student like him off the court, particularly in math and science where he has been especially strong. Congratulations to Coach Dickson and his staff on getting a great student-athlete, to Rudy's mom and dad for raising a great son, and most of all to Rudy for making the kind of decision which is not made by student athletes often enough these days.'  Web note:  More on that topic later.

5/24/04 Coach Abdu-Allah Torrence: 'The New Heights program for student-athletes 8th grade team competed in the Staten Island Jazz AAU Invitational this weekend. With tremendous efforts from Ian Umpierre, Kareem Green, Kaseem Carr, Sean Corley and Mohammed Barry they captured the championsip tiitle with a 20 point win over the New Jersey Cardinals. Coach Darryl Washington had tremendous poise when the Cardinals made a 18-4 run to pull within 4 points of tying the game. Kudos to the 8th grade tema of making great strides this month.

On sadder note the sportsmanship of the coach on the Cardinals sent a bad message to a sport that is struggling with it's perseption by society. It showed on the faces of some of the players who seemed embarassed by his cursing and disgusting behavior. We as role models have to show restraint. I know in the heat of competition we lose our heads but remember before and after the whistle we have to be gentleman and this coach did not represent that. If you have any responses email to atorrence72@hotmail.com.'

Dexter Gray (14), Shantay Robinson (11), Keith Benjamin (10), Chris Lowe (10), Mike Coburn (7) and Mike Watson (6) each chipped in for the Knights, while Eugene Lawrence (22), Corey Fisher (19 points and the IS8 Rookie award for the 'all business' freshman), Phil Jones (12), Marvin Roberts (8), Jamel Jackson (8) and Matt Pink (5) scored for Juice as they again played without their star, Ramel Bradley, still working on school projects.

5/22/04  It will be Mt Vernon vs. Juice at noon tomorrow for the IS8 championship as the Knights edged the Bingo All Stars 76 - 72 and Juice held on for a 106 - 97 win against the Playaz, last fall's champs. Mt Vernon began the game with a 7 - 0 start before the All Stars came back for a 36 - 35 halftime lead and then began the second half with a 15 - 2 streak. Other than that, the All Stars were better as A J Price had a game high 25, Devon Baker 14 and Arturo Dubois a respectable 13. Unfortunately, Derrick Caracter was held to 7 while the Knights got balanced scoring from Jonathan Mitchell (17), Keith Benjamin (16), Dexter Gray (13), Chris Lowe (12), Mike Coburn (8) and Shantay Robinson (6).

Juice played withour Ramel Bradley (he had an online test to take but will be back tomorrow), led by one after the first period, outscored the Playaz 39 - 19 in the second for a comfortable 64 - 43 halftime lead.  Then the fell asleep. It was 82 - 70 after three and 88 - 87 Playaz with 3:49 to play and their pont guard, Eugene Lawrence (12) fouling out.  But Corey Fisher (22 points and 6 for 6 from the foul line in the last 1:40 for the fabulous freshman), Kojo Mensah (23), Jamel Jackson (15) and Marvin Roberts (12) took up the perimeter slack while Phil Jones (9) and freshman Brandon Walters (9) continued to control the boards to the very end. The Playaz' top six were Jordan Fowler (20 with four treys), Courtney Nelson (18), Mark Tyndell (18 for Philadelphia's Player of the Year, heading for Temple), Kyle Lowrey (13), Sean Singletary (13) and JR Inman (9) but they faded in the final minutes.

5/22/04 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'Live and "Learn -- A few days ago I posted a piece about two Tilden players who play for the Jjuice Allstars. In this post I challenged the Juice coaches to meet with me regarding the future of these two fine young men. Well, let me say this - Dwayne "Tiny" Morton stepped up to the plate and more than answered my questions! In a long conversation Tiny gave me what I believe was a true picture of the situation. After speaking with him I realized that we both should have spoken to each other much sooner. I was wrong to post my thoughts without giving him the courtesy of a call first. As I said Live and learn. I for one have learned that I should ask questions before jumping to conclusions. I apologize to anyone I might have offended.'

5/17/04 Coach Wee Francis: 'I would like to thank my players for their hard work and effort during the CityWide tournament season. Abyssinian super eight's made it to the championship today and lost but gave it their all. The following players are eight and under and are definitely rising talent to keep an eye on: Daquon Erving (cousin of Gary Erving), Cheyenne Nettleton, Chaz Walter, Jaelen Walter, Amari Brown, Kyle Williams (sportsmanship award ), Troy Mitchell, Cameron Cardwood, Timothy Jones and Christopher M. This is truly a group of future stars. Also, it's that time of the year again when Wee's All-stars will be selecting the best of the best for the upcoming summer tournaments. Wee's All-stars will be returning to the Stephon Marbury Classic (last years runner up) Ron Artest tournament (last years champions) and this year we will be in the pre -- teen classic. Look out for tryouts.'

5/17/04 Chris Phillips, head coach NY Elite SRAP: 'The team did it again combining for another championship in Springfield Mass. They went 6-0 , and in the playoffs on Sunday they beat 3 tough teams Cecil Kirk, Fairfax Stars, and BABC. Greg Paulus was outstanding as the tournament MVP, with teammate Andre Blache making the all tournament team but there were other players who came up big. Benoit Bekono had a great series with outstanding defense, rebounding and key baskets. James "767 widebody" Tchana boxed out sending bodies flying, hopefully the trainer didn't get paid by the occurence. Jimmy O'Sullivan hit some key three's throughout the weekend. Also 2 new additions Javon Parris and Nate Brumfeld proved to be big game players. Parris locked up the Fairfax Stars leading scorer with the SRAP/NY Elite coming back from a 16 point deficit. Brumfeld scored, rebounded and defended relentlessly. Next up is Bob Gibbons in North Carolina.'

5/15/04 John P Miciotta: 'Contrary to published reports and according to Ron Naclerio, Dwayne Johnson will not sign with Northeastern. According to coach Naclerio the Huskies staff advised him that they would use their last scholarship on a post player. This means that Johnson is still looking for an offer. Again let me say DJ would be an absolute steal for most low major programs, and could provide a steardy hand in reserve for programs at higher levels. Coaches please go to www.psal.org for the contact info on Cardozo, you will find in DJ an outstanding player and a better person.'

5/15/04 The IS8 playoffs are not for the faint of heart. Real Scout's Salvador Patricio had the cut over his left eye taken care of and scored 13 for his team in a losing effort. 5/10/04 Coach Ruben Taverez, LPAC: 'I am convinced that the majority of the coaches who are involved in AAU basketball have not experienced what I experienced this weekend in winning the ProStyle winter league 16+under championship Saturday night. My joy comes from knowing that 85% of my team has been with me for almost 4 years. They have been in the gym learning this great game of basketball and although we've taken our lumps for the last couple of years,we finally put together 2 good weeks of basketball which allowed us to beat Gotham Reign 79-64 in the 16+ under prostyle championship. It started last weekend when we got a 1st round forfeit win over Team Roc and a 94-74 win over Riverside Church, Then we beat FYA 81-51 in the semi-finals setting up a rematch with Gotham Reign who beat us earlier in the season. The game was tied after 3 quarters at 51 before Amuary Fermin (22 points and the championship game MVP) converted a 3 point play and had 3 big steals later in the quarter that took the wind out of Gotham Reign and Steve Pickens (20 points and the Prostyle 16+ under scoring Champion) hit 2 three pointers and added 4 free throws to give LPAC the lead for good. Brian Howard had a monster game with 12 points, 16 rebounds and 5 block shots and Anthony Nieves picked up the slack for LPAC'S leader Andre Pow (sprained his ankle in the 2nd quarter) with 8 points and 5 rebounds in the 4th quarter. I want to thank my assistant coach Victor Crespo for all the hardwork he put in. Victor, this one is for you.'

5/6/04 LFBALL: 'I had an opportunity this year to watch Pocono Mountain East HS, Swiftwater Pa. play. I was shocked at the great talent level of this team. With 3 D1 level starters returning next year, and outstanding height and coaching, this is a team that would be right up there for a NYC championship if they were in NYC. Oddly, most of the players are from the NY metropolitan area and used the area to develop skills. I think they would be great comp for ANY NYC HS Team. And the gym facility is better than most colleges.

While at the school the other day I noticed they are having the Pocono Mountain East Shootout on May 22 and 23 with 5 games guaranteed. That's 5 games in two days. The coach told me he would love to have a few NYC and NJ HS teams at this event. The cost is only $200 and the distance to NYC is only 80 miles. If teams wish to stay overnight, they can stay at local hotels for a reasonable cost per room. Just think 2 days in the beautiful Pocono Mountains with your team (back and fourth or stay overnight) for at least 5 games and great team bonding. T shirts to all participants. Interested teams should contact: Bron Holland (ex Lasalle U star), Head Coach, (570) 839-7121 ext. 80412.'

5/5/04 All-USA Today third-team boys basketball forward Juan Diego Tello Palacios of Our Savior New American (Centereach, N.Y.) says he'll sign with Louisville. The 6-8 Palacios, a native of Colombia, chose the Cardinals over Baylor.

5/5/04 T-Bone: 'Why is no one talking about Daryll Hill entering the NBA Draft?'

5/5/04 Coach Nigel Thompson, Monroe HS: 'There is an important article in the American Educator (Spring 2004) titled, "It's time to tell the kids: If you don't do well in H.S., You won't do well in college (or on the job)". According to the article, research has shown that only 14% of students with a "C" average (or lower) in H.S. will graduate from any kind of college (2yr or 4yr). Whereas, 64% of students with an "A" average will graduate from college(2yr or 4yr). Wow! I have shared this article with my players and I have asked them to maintain at least a 75 average to be elegible. And now I'm not sure if that is enough.

Congratulations to Darian David (Monroe HS-Jr)on having another fabulous season: 1st team (Bronx)- Newsday; 2nd team (Bronx)-Daily News.'

5/5/04 Antonio Cannon: 'The T.K. Allstars 16u boys team defeated team Gershwin 67-43, @ Almighty Force last Sunday, then travelled up to Prostyle for the elite 8 playoffs. T.K. arrived late and started the game down 14pts. and three mins. off the game clock. Gothan Reign held on to defeat us 88-80. Great effort by the entire roster, clawing back to make this a competitive playoff contest. Up next, Citywide elite 8 playoffs Wednesday, May 5th, 7:00pm vs. L-Pac @ Roberto Clemente Stae Park.'

5/5/04 Brooklyn Scout: 'Kareem Lloyd, a 6-7 forward who played this season at New Mexico Junior College, made a verbal commitment to Boise State of the Western Athletic Conference. Lloyd was named first team All-Conference and All-Region in the NJCAA Region V after compiling averages of 13.2 points and a conference-leading 10.3 rebounds. He connected on 50.2% of his field goal attempts and recorded season highs of 27 points against Howard (TX) on 1/19 and 21 rebounds versus New Mexico Military on 1/26. As a freshman, Lloyd attended and briefly played at Crichton (TN) College. The Brooklyn (NY) native led Benjamin Banneker HS to the 2000-01 PSAL "B"  title while averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds during his senior season.'

5/5/04 Daily News: Telfair's already in money. Endorses sneaker, draft. It's not Kidd stuff. For coach Larry Brown, big doubts on Telfair.  Looking at $15M, just think: If shoe fits, wear it. His shifting fortunes.

5/5/04 Newsday: Telfair’s quantum leap of faith. Taking pass on college makes dollars & sense.

5/5/04 NY Post: Next stop, NBA.  First step in aligning with the stars.

5/5/04 Booksnball: 'Congratulations to Sebastian "Bassy" Telfair and his family for the first class press conference that was held at the ESPN Zone Sport's Restaurant Tuesday afternoon. Sebastian showed his poise & grace in anouncing his decison to forego his college education at Louisville and put his name into the 2004 NBA Draft. It was also announced that Sebastian has signed a six year promotional agreement with the adidas shoe company. Terms were not disclosed, but it was for a "significant" amount of money with incentive performance clauses included. (this usually means more money if he makes the All Rookie team, is Rookie of the year, makes the All star Game etc over the course of his contract etc)

Time will tell what the future holds for this special youngman/player, but if a winning personality, poise and a work ethic of someone much older means anything then success on the NBA level will come to Sebastian much sooner than many people may believe. Sebastian mentioned several times the great support he receives from his family and friends. It was great to see the pride and wall to wall smiles in the room as Sebastian spoke and charmed the questioners with his articualate answers. Bassy is just 18 and yet he spoke and handled himself like a seasoned NBA veteran. I think that once he has interviews and workouts with NBA Teams- GM's that you will see his name appear early on in the upcoming draft. He is in superb shape (still working out with Andrew Amigo, the personal trainer of his brother Jamel.

I'm happy to report via a conversation with Jamel, that contray to published reports, Sebastian is not leaving Lincoln H.S. to train at the IMG Academy in Florida. He is on track to graduate (he has passed all of his NY State required Regent exams) and as he finishes up his class requirements he will walk down the aisle with the class of 2004 on June 25, 2004. Best to you and yours Bassy, we will miss ya!'

5/4/04 Vinny Kabus: 'Thanks to Niko Scott's solid play with the Metro Hawks in Houston the previous weekend, over 15 Div.1 college coaches made the trip to Christ The King to see him . He has numerous "official scholarship offers'' from schools such as Hofstra, as well as very strong interest from Richmond St Johns and Syracuse. After speaking with many of the coaches, the consensus on Niko is that he is a strong ''combo'' guard that always seems to make the right play, as well as having one of the purest shots in tri-state area. Not bad after only one weekend tournament.'

5/4/04 Abdu-Allah Torrence: 'The New Heights Program for student-athletes 5th grade team played in the AAU Metro regional at Island Garden this weekend. We won our pool play games by an avergae of 27 points against very good competion like the Lightning-Dingle squad that played us very tough at Prostyle the previous weekend. Also compliments go to the Westchester Hawks-Donovan squad and the Rockland Rockets team who had this kid #3 a guard who lit us up for 25 points. In Prostyle we played a tough Teaneck Youth Basketball team who were ranked #2 in the whole seeding process, but once again Emmanuel Brown and Kyle Anderson held up the scoring load while New Heights got great guard play from Jamel Torrence, Tarik Smith, Bryant Cruz, Kalil Singleton and Byron Washigton. But, at the end of the weekend they had their 12 game winning streak snapped on Sunday in the AAU Regional semifinals by by a very good Next Generatiion squad. It was a hard fought game, but after an emotinal win vs the NYC Rise Panthers the team was a bit drained. Two weekends, 13 games, and next Saturday we paly Team Next in the 10 and under championship in Prostyle Saturday at 10 am Bronx Regional HS. Congratulations to the players on a very sucessful weekend and a berth to the 11 and under Mationals in Coca Beach Florida.'

5/3/04 Coach Paul Suber: 'A grueling and special weekend - Team Next 10 & under team played 7 games over the weekend. They won a Citywide quarter final game and a Prostyle semi-final game, before traveling to numerous sites (St. Dominic's, St. Mary's and Island Garden) in Long Island to participate in the Metro Regional A.A.U. Tournament. They went 5-0 while playing against some very nice competition supplied by Chase the Game, the L.I. Lightning-Howell and #1 seeded Westchester Hawks. It was a total team effort throughout the weekend and great team play by Marky Philipps, Robert Weschler, Khalid Straver, Jeremy Espalaite, Roget Romain, Davon Saunders, Kareem Canty, Jarren Oliver-Moore, Kyle Lane, Jameek Jones, De'Vaughn Reid and Jermaine Sanders. In the quarterfinal game at St. Dom's (Oyster Bay, L.I.) Da'Shawn Suber scorched the L.I. Lightening with 34 pts. and De'Vaughn Reid had 12 rebounds. The team now advances to the championship game that will be played on Memorial Day, May 31st. I am very proud of the kids overall work and dedication to teamwork.

Team Next has 2 other teams (6th grade & 8th grade) that made it to the championship and will also be playing on 5/31.'

5/3/04 Elaine Sung, assistant sports editor Newsday city edition: 'After the Newsday site redesign, I noticed that our city hoops coverage never gets posted, but that Long Island's coverage (of A.J.
