6/29/04 Coach Paul Suber: 'Team Next 12 & Under - Performance in the Unique All-Stars 2nd Annual Pre A.A.U. Nationals Tournament: This weekend (6/25-6/27) in Long Island Torrel Harris (Unique's coach) hosted one of the best and most competitive A.A.U. tournaments of the A.A.U. season so far. He had some of the best A.A.U. teams in the country involved; "Virginia Vipers" (#1 team in VA), "Virginia Pride" (#2 team in VA), "God's Glory" from N.C., Delaware Sharks, Metro Hawks, Albany City Rock, Central Jersey Hawks, Youth Interlock (#1 team in Philadelphia), Maryland Select (#2 team Md.), and a very good "Tim Thomas Playaz/Juice All Stars" combo team that was very dangerous.

On the 1st night of the tournament we beat the very tough "Virginia Pride" team in a hard tug of war type of game 71-59, we were led by Tavon Sledge's 28pts. and Steve Whittingham's 20pts. The second day we played the "T.T. Playaz/Juice All Stars" team and won 74-61. We were again led by Tavon Sledge with 28pts., Aaron Brown 14pts., Lenny Toussaint 14pts. and Steve Whittingham 13pts. Sunday, the 27th was the real tough test day. We played 3 very hard fought and competitive games back to back winning the 1st over God's Glory, 40-21 we pulled away late; 2nd win came over the undefeated Virginia Vipers 80-76, we were led by Steve Whittingham's 26pts., Lenny Toussaint's 24pts. and Tavon Sledge's 23pts.

The Championship game was a dog fight with the Unique All-Stars; its was a seesaw, back and forth with Unique leading at half-time by 4pts. We settled down and played some solid team defense and Steve Whittingham caught fire and went crazy offensively, scoring on an array of dazzling moves and jump shots (3 - 3 pointers down the stretch) on his way to scoring 41pts. and receiving M.V.P. honors. Tavon Sledge had 13 assists to go along with a 22pt. average for the tournament and receiving the Most Consistent Player Award in the tournament. Brian Glazewski received our Mr. Hustle Award and had a great weekend along with the whole teams great effort and conditioning it took to win this tournament.'

Just last week we won Tim Thomas Playaz BlowUp for the 6thgrade. It was a great game where we beat the Playaz 6th grade team in a good game. Receiving MVP was Isaiah Morton finishing with 24pts after playing with a box and one the majority of the game. Also playing great was Corey Edwards who always makes the game look so easy. One of the greatest defenders on the 6th grade level .These guys have got to be one of the toughest 6th grade backcourts. Joshua Bowman also had another great weekend one of the most athletic players for his size. For the weekend Isaiah averaged 22pts 7astsJosh avg 14 8rb and Corey avg 12 and 3stls .Our 7th grade team also played great losing in the championship game. A great performance put out by the youngsters to earn a 38-36 win  The 19u seniors had their league opener also at the Almighty Force Unlimited where they took on the S.S. Entertainment and came up with a 58-49 win. Derek Williams led the way with 19pts & 6 steals.'

6/20/04 Seton Hall Prep will face St Patrick for the And 1 East 1 regional championship this afternoon after taking defending champion St Anthony 61-60 in their semifinal showdown. Mark Solomon, the 6-1 senior guard, kept the Pony Pirates in the game hitting four treys in the first half. Andrew Pusar, the 6-2 senior wing, had a game high 20 to go with 13 from 6-0 junior Peter Braswell and 8 from 6-8 senior Brandon Costner. Don't let Costner's low point total fool you. Point guard Chris Andrews brings the ball up court and then the Pony Pirates run their offense through B C at the high post, where he can either shoot threes, pass down low or pass to the wings and cut to the basket for the return pass. Brandon and the heady Pusar are particularly effective at give and go moves.

On the other side of the semis St Patrick jumped off to a 9-0 lead vs. Linden and won the wire to wire contest 55-35. This is not last summer's Celtic team, a group that was in obvious disarray. This summer the bench is standing on every attempted shot and glad handing each player who returns for a blow. Against Linden, another team that emphasizes team first, Corey Fisher (12), 6-5 junior Andre Davis (10), 6-3 junior forward Tyrone Cook (8), 5-10 junior guard Stephen Draper (8) and 6-8 junior center Yanick Formanano (5) led the way. The others in their eight man rotation are 5-5 junior point guard Altariq Wagner, 6-1  junior guard Jhamar Youngblood and 6-7 junior forward Daquan Cook. Notice - no seniors. If Derrick Caracter does come back to St Pat's  as rumored he'll find plenty of talented underclassmen for company. Meanwhile, for coach Phil Colaccio's Tigers, Michael Henderson had a dozen but 6-7 senior center Hafeez Brown was hampered by early foul trouble and was never a factor.

In the quarters St Patrick got balanced scoring from Corey Fisher (13), Stephen Draper (12), Tyrone Cook (11) and Andre Davis (11) to best St Raymond.  Linden jumped on Grady early and never looked back in their matchup, while St Anthony comfortably handled Charleston 61-49 as Sean McCurdy (15), Barney Anderson (13), Miles Beaty (11) Derrick Mercer (9) and Ahmad Nivens (6) each contributed.

The Seton Hall Prep, Niagara Falls quarterfinal tilt was a classic. Andrew Pusar appropriately ended the And 1 halftime with an and 1 basket to knot the score at 33. Pusar (18), Brandon Costner (16), Porter Braswell (8) and 6-2 senior forward Alex Wujciak (10) had just enough for a 66-63 win.

Saturday's 55-35 victory over Scott Davidson Memorial was anchored by Gleb Nepomndascshy (Tottenville H.S. Varsity 15pts) and Frank Terranova (St. Joseph by the Sea Varsity) 17pts. Sunday morning's victory came vs S.I.P.A.G. 44-39 led by Gleb Nepomndascshy (Tottenville H.S. Varsity 17pts) and Brian Jirak ( St. Peters J.V. 10pts).'

Northport trailed early, but surged to a 4 point half time lead and added to it in the second half, then had to hold on for the win. Rich Robbins led a balanced Northport attack with 9 points, including 2 big free throws with seconds left on the clock to put the game out of reach. In the finals, the Warriors downed Northport 40 to 29. The Warrior press broke open a close game, and then their red hot outside shooting enabled them to fight off any Northport rallies. 6/19/04 Coach Rock Eisenberg: ' I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Coach Tom Pecora and the Hofstra Pride Basketball Family and Coach Jay Wright and the Villanova University Basketball Family for inviting Tilden High School to participate in two great team camps over the past two weekends. Our players and coaches thoroughly enjoyed their experience on and off the court. The professionalism displayed by the referees, players, and coaches of these two fine universities had a profound impact on our young and impressionable student/athletes.

The lectures, individual attention, competitve play, and family like atmosphere at both camps were really first class. I would also like to thank our players and our super coaching staff of Ron Vernon, Michael George, John Harris, and Howard Hughes for filling in for me at these camps while this past week I underwent surgery on my right hand and helped to take care of my loving and devoted wife Karin who is 8 months pregnant with twins.'

Best of luck to Lonnell Jones as well, for the hard work shown during his school career at Hillcrest along with the two Southampton College bound scholarship recipients, Nicholas Jones & Joemelle Khan. All four of those guys really put up some great years with our programs on the basketball floor as well as in the classroom but also leading by example by assisting in coaching our younger groups. It wasn't easy teaching Karim basketball, but I saw he had a good feel for the game, good grades, and he was tall, and he listened to the coaches. We all know you can't teach height. Karim took all the yelling and abuse, but knew it was for a good reason, and he was smart enough to know it was for his development. Congratulations to all the Lightning coaches and players especially Loren Jackson and Dave Johnson!'

6/7/04 Edwin Morales: 'One team not mentioned that participated in the GymRat Challenge, yet lasted until the Final 16 was the Rockland Rockets 17U . Behind the great point guard play of Deshawn Veada (Ramapo), Pat Volpe & Tim Coyne  (Alburtus Magnus), clutch shooting of Manny Garcia (Cardinal Spellman),  excellant defence of Lenard Lans & Rudy Boutin (Spring Valley) and the  inside presence of Gavin Loisdia (Ramapo), Matt Brundage (Old Tappn) & Donny Lind (Nanuet) the Rockets knocked out two of the top ten rated teams. But at the end they were simply worn out having to defeat two teams with start times that were minutes apart. This AAU programs is steadily becoming one of the better programs in our area.'

6/6/04 Metrohoops Showcase Day 1 Report.

6/6/04 LFBALL: 'JR Inman did commit to Rutgers last week. Press conference next week. Rutgers also close to getting Jerod Griffith, Anthony Farmer and the Bynum kid from St Joes of Metuchen. That would give the Scarlet Knights 4 of the top 6 rising seniors in the state of NJ. It would be the best recruiting class at Rutgers in 20 years. JR turned down many schools to commit. I honestly wish he would have taken at least 2 visits before committing. He has not taken any visits, official or unofficial, despite having solid offers from many ACC and BE schools. I guess he and his family know what they want and are prepared for any outcome.'

6/6/04 RutgersInsider: J. R. Inman, out of St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale New Jersey, has made a verbal commitment to continue his basketball career at Rutgers University.

6/6/04 Coach Dre' (Team Underrated): 'On Saturday Team Underrated defeated DSA by the 3 points in the semifinals of the Junior Division of the Almighty Force Tournament. Team Underrated had key plays down the stretch including the 3 pointer by Sadraac Numa with 3 seconds left that gave Team Underrated a 3 point lead. Team Underrated came into the semi's as a #9 seed after coming off a lackluster regular season at 4-4. They came into the playoffs with a mission. Congrats to Chris Barber, Sadraac Numa, Humzah Hakim, Cameron Barber, Stanley Calixte, Raeen Coward, Cody Lapp, Jamal Lining, Anthony Parris and Perone Harris. Team Underrated would also like to thank Shahee Martin for the opportunity to play in his Almighty Force Tournament for the first time.

6/2/04 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): Our 17U team played some very good teams in and out of our pool in the Gymrat Challenge in Albany, N.Y. over the Memorial Day Weekend. In our first game we defeated Central Jersey Hawks by the score of 56 - 49. In our second game i we defeated CNY Flames by the score of 72 - 64. Sean Watson scored 38 points with 7 out of 12 three pointers, Max Menard had 15 and 12 assists, our third game was a real test for team.We play a very tall and great shooting team from Boston, YABC. We were very lucky to come out of our pool play by defeating this team by the score of 61 - 58 as Sean Watson scored 27 points with 6 out of 10 three pointers, Max Menard had 21 points and 10 assists We were able to advance to the playoffs. This is when things got really ugly for us - we were facing 6'10, 6'9, 6'7, 6'6, and 6'4 this was the Minnesota Magic team. They could play, they had some very good shooters and knew how to pass the ball. We lost by the score of 63 - 44. Sean Watson didn't give up; he was the only bright spot of the game. He scored 30 points with 5 of 10 3 pointers. Karim McKenzie played well in all the games as he averaged 12 rebounds and 3 charging fouls per game. There were 80 teams in the 17U bracket.'

The Flame started the second half with a flurry, and we never recovered. Kawan Lilly finished with 16pts. Justin Davis and Jerrel McKie added 4 blocks each. The contest became somewhat ugly as tempers flared between both teams, in an unusually physical contest. Our floor general Antonio Cannon Jr. was under the weather and couldn't go most of the weekend! All in all a great experience from a coaching standpoint for me. All our games were played between Albany University, and Sienna College. Great job from the entire roster, everyone made contributions, allowing us to reach the final four in this highly competitive GymRat Challenge event!'

6/1/04 T-bone: 'This past weekend, the MSU Skyliners travel program went up to Siena College to take part in the Gym Rat Challenge. I just want to take this time out to thank John Kmack and his staff for another well ran event. Our team went 0-3 on the weekend, but that was expected by only bringing 6 players on the trip and 2 of those players only being a freshman and soph. We lost to the DC Warriors (Reebok) by +15, Shaq Attack (Shaq's Squad) 4 and the LI Lightning (Carlton Clark, former St.Rays and UMASS with great coaching) by 1pt in triple overtime. This weekend, we were led by freshman Anthony Nelson of St.Joseph HS in Metchun NJ. Anthony displayed a poise and game ahead of his years. His highlight was a putback dunk over a 6'8 player that goes to Dematha in DC (vs. DC Warriors). Anthony scored 28pts in the triple OT loss to the Lightning and 18 vs Shaq Attack. He wore #4 for anyone that saw our games. Anthony has invites to now play with the DC Warriors and Hunting Park Players (Philly) in Reebok sponsored events over the summer and it won't be long before the Playaz come calling.. Another player that did work this weekend was Corey "Poodey" Williams of Elizabeth HS. Corey scored 27pts vs LI Lightning and 21 vs Shaq Attack. I have an interview on the Elizabeth HS PG here.'
