It was a grind with the Heat leading the entire game. but had to overcome some physical D and no help from the "men in stripes". This was a total team effort with particular recognition for strong point guard work from Quintin Brown and Stephon Draper with play exceeding that of top ranked Nick Wise and David Devesin. A big block on the perimeter, steal and lay-up from Tyrone Cook which got the teams juices flowing and everyone on their feet. A Milan Prodanovic 3 forced a Houston timeout. Big interrior presense from Mike Harry and Rob Robinson upset the flow of the reputed Hoops big men. The match up between Shahee Martin and Jermichael Finley was classic giving each other all they had inside and out. Vernon Teel and Jamel Ferguson kept the offense pressure on attacking and getting the basket relentlessly coming away with and 1 and key free throws to seal the win between them. The NYC Heat are hot in Las Vegas. With temperatures of 106 degrees, we are 3-0 in pool play defeating Conquest (Ontario Canada), Corona Flares (California), and Dalas Seawolves with strong play from Vernon Teel, Jamel Ferguson, Quintin Brown and Shahee Martin. We've had great role play from Mike Harry, Tyrone Cook, Rob Robinson, Milan Prodanovic, Stephon Draper and Kevin Hannaway. We move on to play our first playoff game tonight versus the A pool Houston Hoops or Friends of Hoops (Seattle). Good work coaches Nate Cadogan, Richie Dominguez, Chuck Vance. Turn it up Heat! ' 7/25/04 Tom Rennard: 'Adidas is sponsoring its first Adidas Jr. Phenom Camp at Alliant University in San Diego Ca. from Aug 5th thru 8th. Jersey Express. 6th Grade-- Sean Grennan, Sea Girt, Corey Erving AllStars.' 7/24/04 Coach Mike Moore, Team Next: 'Coach Paul Suber did an outstanding job reaching the Sweet 16 of the AAU 6th Grade(12 and under) National Tournament held from July 16th to July 23rd in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Coach Suber accomplished this feat without the services of his power forward, Davontay Grace, the number one ranked sixth grader in New York City. Grace is still recuperating from a leg injury suffered in early June. Despite this huge personnel loss, Team Next managed to defeat the State champions from Kentucky (Kentucky Patriots), Connecticut (Hartford City Hoops), and Illinois (Central Rising Stars), before losing to a higher seeded team, Ohio Jaguars (6th seed), by three points -- 45-42 in a game that see-sawed back and forth until the very end. In the second round game against the Illinois State Champions, two former NBA players' sons went at each other as Antoine Mason (son of Anthony Mason) battled against Bill Wennington's son. This game went down to the wire as Aaron Brown hit a layup at the buzzer to give Team Next a 52-50 win. Steve Whittingham's play was outstanding throughout the tournament as he consistently scored above 20 points and averaged more than 15 rebounds a game. In fact, against the Kentucky State Champions, Whittingham exploded for 38 points. I really want to commend Coach Suber and his team on a great job!' 7/23/04 Anthony Nicodemo: '1st round playoff results on the Westchester's Best Summer League, 2004 page.' 7/23/04 Isaiah Brown: 'This is a quick note to introduce a player in the Dyckman Youth Enterprises Inc. organization that has come a long way an emerged into one of the top guards in the city, Steven "No fear" Polanco a 6'2" senior guard out of Bronx Regional ('05), has been in the organization since he was 10 years old and has worked on his game year after year and is now the captian of the Dyckman senior team. This past week he put up great numbers in UDC (4-2) and Dyckman(4-0) as the Dyckman senior team went 3-1 only to lose to Wake-Eden by three (the Wake-Eden team was up 10 points before the game started b/c of the lateness. Steven has one more year left of school and is being recrutied by low Div. I schools and Div. II schools. He has led the Bronx Regional team in scoring with 20 ppg and another PSAL championship this past year and is looking to add another to his resume. With tenacious defense, heart of a lion, and stellar scoring ability, Steven has the potential to become a great student/athlete at whatever instution he attends and I am proud to see him develop into the student/athlete he is today.' 7/23/04 Rob Engemann, Rebounds & The Hoop Group: 'Rebounds Elite Team Camp at Rebounds Basketball Facility (Neptune, NJ) is August 2nd-6th. We are looking for at two more teams. Any teams interested email Rob Engemann at RobE@rebounds1.com for more information.' 7/22/04 Coach Sly Johnson: Game results are on the Nike Swoosh League page.' 7/22/04 Antonio Cannon Sr: 'This message is for all the basketball programs, players, & fans that have supported me during my four years(2000-2004) as Director of the defunct Kenny Anderson/Lefrak City Classic. Words cannot express my gratitude to all of you that chose & intrusted my staff and I to provide one of the best summer basketball experiences in the city! A very special thanks goes out to Sean Couch, Bobbito Garcia & Jesse Washington creators of Bounce magazine (from the playground). The summer of 2005 my staff and I will be introducing the T.K. Allstar Summer Invitational to the basketball scene. As we will strive to improve on the #5 ranking awarded us by Bounce magazine issue #2.' 7/22/04 USA Today: New Jersey senior rates as four-star player, 'five-star human being' - James Tchana. 7/22/04 Newsday: James Tchana heals body & soul. Six months after van crash that injured him and killed Our Saviour teammate, Cameroon native is getting looks. 7/22/04 Antonio Cannon Sr: 'T.K. Allstar 16u results from the IS8 2004 summer league: Monday night we completed our pool play by defeating the Springfield Riffles 78-67. Four players reached double figures Tony Dennison 30pts, 8 rebounds, 3 block shots led the way. Justin Davis 17pts. 10 rebounds, 7 assists & 3 block shots. Great game by both ball clubs! T.K. Allstars advances to the second round, next Wednesday, July 28th @ 6:30pm. We will face coach Michael Moore and his nationally ranked Team Next ball club featuring nationally ranked players Erving Walker and Lance Stephenson.' 7/21/04 Anthony Nicodemo: '1st round playoff matchups on the Westchester's Best Summer League, 2004 page.' 7/20/04 InsideHoops: Playaz Ball. 7/20/04 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'This weekend the Metro Hawks 14 year old team travelled to Temple Unversity for the Clash of the Titans tournament. We opened up pool play by playing a very good Westchester Wildcat team and prevailed 47-44 on a three pointer at the buzzer by Brandon Reece. Reggie Davis led the way with 12 pts 10 reb, Adam Sarraga added 8. Down the stretch we were down 1 with 40 seconds to go when Dorvell Carter hit a three to put us up one. The Wildcats came down and tied the game up. However Roland Davis executed an isolation play by drawing Brandon"s man to him and kicking it to him for the game winner. It was Brandon"s only basket of the game but naturally a huge one. During the game however the Hawks suffered a devasting loss when Brandon Beckford fractured his leg and was taken to the hospital. As bad as the injury seemed Brandon kept his composure and withstood the pain as his leg was reset and put in a cast. Though he will be out for the summer a bright recovery seems in order! Our second pool game was versus the LB Soliders and it was a 67- 49 rout. Georgio Milligan was high with 12 Reggie added 11 points, 10 rebs Dorvell and Adam 7 each. Our last pool game was versus the Hurricanes and it was a easy 74-38 win. Roland Davis poured in 15 Adam Sarraga 12 and Reggie and Georgio 10 each. The Championship was against the Wilmington Wildcats another very good team. In a hard fought game we pulled away for a 59-41 victory and secured the championship. Russell scored all his 15 points in the second half Reggie also had 15 as he dominated the low box. Roland added 10 8 assists and Dorvell owned the boards with 15 big rebounds. It was a hard fought and earned championship! The young Hawks played thru losing a teammate to injury, trailing late in games and making big shots aslo playing great defense. In the chip the bench ingited the comeback as two starters were in foul trouble but they still prevailed to win the tournament. The MVP was Reggie Davis as he posted 3 double doubles. Adam Sarraga who averaged 9 pts off the bench and Roland Davis who scored or assisted on most of the big points during the tournament desrve mention. But best of all it was a total team victory!' 7/20/04 Roberto Diaz, NYC Finest - 'On Saturday, the 16u took on the Metro Hawks at the Nike Swoosh Classic (Roy Wilkins Park, Baisley & 167 St.) and came up with a 49-34 win. Akeem Brightman led the way with 12pts, 5 steals & 4 Assists. Charles Jenkins added 10pts, 4 steals, 4 assists & 5 rebounds while Oshamar Planes contributed 10 pts & 4 steals. Daniel Desir chipped in 8 rebounds. The 14u lost to the Metro Hawks 7/20/04 Coach Sly Johnson: 'Game results are on the Nike Swoosh League page.' 7/19/04 Week five results, leading scorers and standings are on the Conrad McRae Tournament, 2004 page. 7/19/04 Antonio Cannon Sr: 'The T.K. Allstars 16u team weekend results: On Friday, night we defeated The Dream Team at Africa Park (Rochdale Village-133rd St. Bedell), 81-75. Balance scoring from the T.K. Allstars held off an offensive explosion from Calvin Rhoden (43pts.) & Shawn Crawford (28pts.) of the Dream Team. Deytwan Hill led the T.K. Balance scoring with 23pts. Justin Davis, Patrick Bourdeau and Shaun Willoughby scored 14pts each. Antonio Cannon, Jr. chipped in 13pts. On Saturday, the Rise Panthers defeated us 47-42 @ Queens Nike Swoosh (Merrick Blvd. and Baisley Blvd), as the offensive trio of Calvin Rhoden, Shawn Crawford and Vernon Teel gave us all we could handle! On Sat. @ the Avirex tourney @ (100 St. & 25 Ave.), we defeated the Fighting Phoenix 78-55. Shaun Willoughby led all scorers with 36pts, 4 assists, and 8 rebounds, Justin Davis 13pts. 8 rebounds, Patrick Bourdeau 11pts., 7 rebounds, Tony Dennison chipped in 10pts. and 7 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots. Sunday's action up @ the Dyckman Summer League we defeated Mookie's Inc. 74-67. Deytwan Hill led all scorers with 31pts. & 2 steals, Justin Davis 19pts, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals. Antonio Cannon, Jr. chipped in 10pts & 4 assists.' 7/19/04 The week 6 results are on the UDC, 2004 page. 7/19/04 Coach Arthur B Cox: 'Last week I watched the 2004 NBA draft. As the selections were announced I pondered how much of a change the game of basketball has taken. The draft should have sent shock waves through the basketball community. High School early entries and Europeans dominated the draft. Only a handful of college grads were selected. This new message is rally a bad one. Prepare for a pro career not a college career. Better yet if you stay in school you may hurt your chances. The NBA is now drafting potential -sneaker companies are recruiting young talent in grade school. I don't begrudge anybody the opportunity to make a lot of money doing something you love - basketball. My message is going to be loud and clear. Make sure you have something to fall back on. To make it to the NBA is no easy task. The players I've had who made the league have been through hell and back. Let's not forget now many great talents never got their shot. In all cases it's usually great basketball success and horrible business experiences. Remember one thing basketball is a dirty business. I love the game of basketball but I hate the business. In closing lets make sure all the young parents and players keep everything in perspective. The NBA is a difficult team to make. Set your goals high, but always have a plan B and a plan C. Good luck and god bless.' 7/19/04 NJ Hoops: White Plains takes Metro title. 7/19/04 Anthony Nicodemo: ''This week's schedule is on the Westchester's Best Summer League, 2004 page.' 7/19/04 Coach Tom Sampogna: 'After intense weeks of academic tutoring and individual workouts, Port Chester PG Melvin Calhoun joined many excellent players at the Eastern Invitational Clinic at the College of New Jersey last week and walked away with an All-Star selection by averaging 15ppg. But his week was cut short because of his participation in the Playaz Ball at Seton Hall for his AAU team, the Connecticut Flame. Melvin averaged 16ppg and 8apg in the tourney and single handly took the Playaz Red team to the brink on elimination in a crushing overtime defeat. Melvin showed his true playmaking ability in front of dozens of top coaches and let his play speak for itself. Finishing the game with 22pts and 9 assts, he carried the team and often destroyed the Playaz opposing guards. Often overlooked because of his size, 5'7, Melvin has steadily become one of the sleepers of the recruiting world. His AAU team is now 31-11 and heads to the Main Event in Vegas to take care of some business. Schools like Marist, Canisuis, FDU, Sacred Heart and Wagner have begun to call for Melvin. Melvin should be included in conversations as one of the top PG's in the NYC, Westchester and CT areas.' 7/19/04 Coach Ben Asher: 'The Long Island Aces played two games on Sunday in the Woodside Fighting Phoenix Second Annual Summer Roundball Classic 2004. The first game was against the host team, the Woodside Fighting Phoenix. A great game all the way around, the Aces came up with the victory, 42-28. The 2nd game was against a well-coached Queens Finest team. A physical game, the Aces pulled out a 45-38 victory. Great contributions today by newcomers Billy and Brandon Butler. By going 3-0 in our pool, we now get a first round bye in the playoffs, which will take place Thursday 8/20 and Friday 8/21.' 7/18/04 T-Bone: 'The TT Playaz 15u basketball team beat Philly MJC to claim the crown for the Playaz Ball 04. The Playaz defeated Philly MJC 86-51 in the title game. They were led by a explosive freshman scorer from NY, Paul Scotland. Also in the championship game, Westwood's freshman Corey Raji (6'4 beast on the boards) scored 18pts and grabbed 10 rebs. St.Anthonys freshman Miles Beatty netted 13 and Plainfield freshmen. Anthony Nelson added 8pts 7 assist and 2 steals. This 15u Playaz team has size, guards and athletic ability. Add in freshman Corey Stokes of St.Benedicts and your going to have "problems" beating them in the coming years.' 7/18/04 Coach Arthur B Cox: 'Congratulations to Sebastian Telfair. I first saw him at IS8 in the seventh grade. He was and is truly an amazing talent. Through all the fanfare that has always surrounded him he always seemed to be a genuinely nice young man. I don't remember one time he didn't go out of his way to shake hands and say hello. The highlight of my memories of Sebastian was not a great shot or special move. At the state championship he gave his MVP trophy to team mate Antonio Pena who had a great championship game. I saw something special in this young man. Not just the special player but special person. I am calling out to Sebastian Telfair. You must be a role model. Don't roll off into the sunset and leave all these kids with a false impression. You didn't get drafted in the first round because of a good smile and being well spoken. You made the NBA because of a work ethic and discipline to make your game what it is today. Let them know about the HS pressure, the AAU pressure, the agents calling, the street agents, the magazine and newspaper hounds, all the new friends you have?, and whatever other pineapples you have to deal with. I am amazed that you got through it. No other player has had the hooplas surrounding him in the last twenty years. To your credit you kept your eye on the prize. Now just prove the detractors wrong and call it a day. Good luck with your career and God bless.' 7/18/04 Daily News: These guys are good -- college coaches. 7/18/04 NY Hoops: Playaz Ball Final & Metro Classic. 7/18/04 NJ Hoops: Playaz defend turf. 7/18/04 Coach Bryan Griffith (N.I.K.E.-1 Basketball Program Inc.) I would like to introduce a player Anthony Lessane, 10th Grade 16 y/o from Paul Robeson HS. Anthony is 6'3" lefty guard, that has solid rebounding skills. Can score around the basket. Anthony needs to improve his academic standard in order to be a top player on the high school scene. Anthony is a member on N.I.K.E.-1 Basketball Team that plays in the Dunkers' Dalight 2004 Summer League.' 7/18/04 Anthony Nicodemo: 'The Westchester Elite Basketball Summer Hardwood Classic took place on Saturday at Briarcliff High School. The 13 and under division was dominated by the Metro Hawks who went 3-0 to take the title. The 14/15 under division was captured by the Westchester Hawks 14 and under Elite Team. The squad is tuning up for the nationals which take place in early August. The 17 and under division was captured by the Yonkers All-City Warriors. They took the title on points after finishing 2-1 in pool play. I'm sorry in my opinion if a student athlete has a responsibility to attend summer school then he cannot travel across the country on basketball road trips. Forget about you're allowed to miss two days. Forget about you spoke to the summer school principal and they'll give you work to take with you. Forget about your parents saying it's all right. Not to be mean, but those are probably the same parents not checking homework during the school year. With all the weekend tournaments and HS classics going on the exposure needed will still be there. Let's get summer school right so you can be eligible for the 2004 - 2005 high school season.' 7/16/04 Coach Arthur B Cox: 'Mt. Vernon High School - Better late than never. Congratulations to Mr. Vernon and head coach Bob Cimino on a season that's just off the chart. How about a 1) State Championship 2) An IS8 Championship 3)Ben Gordon drafted #3 in the first round by the Chicago Bulls 4)Dexter Gray to St Johns 5)Keith Benjamin to Pittsburgh 6)Shantay Robinson to St Rose. These accomplishments were not by accident. The dedication and commitment of Coach Cimino and his staff are unmatched in High School Basketball. There isn't one off season game or practice by any layer in their program from freshman through senior classes that someone in their program is not at. As for the players, their discipline and respect are a statement on how this program works. The groundwork is laid early in the fifth or sixth grade and the results are seen year after year.
