8/31/04 Louis Xifaras: 'Congratulations to Otoja Abit in his college selection of St. John's University for the fall of 2004. Otoja will be a walk-on as a freshman this season. After a successful career at Archbishop Molloy High School, Otoja attended The Gunnery prep school in Connecticut to do a post grad 5th year. After that, he chose to attend St. John's University for both academic and athletic reasons. Congratulations and good luck the next four years in obtaining both a degree and a great basketball experience in NYC. Also, a delayed congratulations to Salvador Patricio in committing to Hofstra University. Sal played his freshman year at Monsignor McClancy High School, then went on to play his sophomore and junior years at Bryant High School, and will finish up at Florida Prepatory in Fort Myers Florida for his senior year. 8/28/04 It will be the Coney Island Bro-day All Stars vs. Team Reebok in the Conrad McRae tournament championship on Saturday, 9/11 at 4:00 PM after CI raced to a 90-76 win over Desert Storm and Reebok got the wire-to-wire 86-73 win against Trackmasters.

It looked dismal for Coney Island when with 4:14 to go in the game their star, Lance Stephenson (14 points as he brought the ball up court and played center on defense) fouled out with his team up by only 78-71. No problem. Tim (Vee) Flowers (27 points, pictured left and heading for Lincoln in the fall), Phil Taylor (17), Julian Pena (13) and Isiah Morton (13) pick up the slack to coast to the win.

When Trackmasters lost to Reebok during the season, their center, 6-5 Marquise Grant was not in the lineup and they were trounced. Marquise arrived today but his 13 points didn't make enough of a difference. Erving Walker (33 points on almost that many shots) and Lenny McNeil (18, he's pictured left) were high for Trackmasters but Brandon Romain (29), Daryl (Truck) Bryant (22) and David Imes (19)  dominated.

8/28/04 An online application form and tournament rules are on the Gauchos 2004 Roundball Classic page.

8/24/04 Coach Roberto Diaz, NYC Finest: 'I must agree for the most part with Coach Mike Jones remarks about graduating HS seniors.

8/24/04 Jeff Goldberg, Seton Hall Prep Sports Information Director: 'Two Prep seniors have made their college choices - point guard Chris Andrews is headed to Yale, while wing Andrew Pusar will be going to Harvard. Chris liked Yale coach, Joe Jones and the campus when he visited in July. He feels it's the right fit for him and he's happy to be maiking an early decision. Andrew is ranked tenth in his senior class with a 4.6 GPA, thanks to honors and advanced placement classes. He loves everything about Harvard, the coaches, campus and players.'

8/24/04 Antonio Cannon Sr: 'The 16u T.K. Allstars lost it's third championship game of the summer Friday night @ Dyckman 41-38. The game got off to a slow pace as both teams were feeling each other out. Dyckman broke the ice with a pro range trey ball from Edgar Sosa, 'the Specialist' as he was being called by the play by play commentator. The park was at full capacity, and the vibe was electric to say the least! Edgar Sosa continued with an assortment of moves to the delight of the home crowd. T.K. shook off the offensive explosion by Edgar, and the thunderous chants from the Dyckman home crowd with a run of their own. Tony Dennison led the way with 13pts. 6 rebounds, Justin Davis 12pts. and Patrick Bourdeau chipped in 10pts. This trio's output was enough to get T.K. within striking distance, down 1 with under a minuet left with the ball. A costly turnover by Johnny Barnes on an errant pass, set up the opportunity for the Specialist (Edgar Sosa) to delight the home crowd once more. He did not disappoint them with time winding down Sosa hit a tough bank shot to strike the final blow and secure the win for the home team. My hat goes off to Mr. Kenny Stevens and Ralph Pena for the outstanding job they are doing in the Dyckman Community. The fans up @ Dyckman loves this game, as was evident by the love they showed our basketball team.'

8/24/04 Coach Sly Johnson,  Manhasset All Stars: 'My program (12,14,16, & 17) had a good summer and I am looking forward to January when we start up again. No Championships to "brag" about, but I have a nice group of kids coming in and we will always be "in the mix." As you know, I don't get involved in the "hype" as far as my kids are concerned. My belief is if they learn and play the game well and do well at school and home, they will be fine. The final score does not make a player. This (2005) is my first graduating class, so it is new to me to constantly get calls from college coaches. Although our (17.U) record wasn't good in Florida, the kids played well enough to draw interest from D-1 & D-2 schools.'

8/23/04 Coach Jimmy Salmon: 'Congratulations are in order to Frederick Douglass Academy. The Lions defeated Paramus Catholic on Sunday in Paterson, NJ to capture the 2004 Championship of the Rev. Dr. Frank Napier Tournament. Junior Corey Lyons took home MVP honors while the All Tournament team was composed of the following young men : Steve McCoy and Ivan Rodriguez of FDA; Luis Guzman of Paramus Catholic; Kimmani Barrett of Paterson Catholic; Dion Sumblin of Passaic County Tech Institute and Waheed Dixon of Irvington HS. The Paterson Division of Recreation thanks all those who contributed to the event's success.'

8/23/04 Coach Glen Steinberg: 'The Warriors just got back from the Philadelphia Elite Skills tournament. It was a mixture of games and skills contests. It was their second annual event. Warriors took a gold winning the tournament. Playing exceptionally well in a mixed division were Tyler Harvey, Pete Drautz, Colin Field, and James Marckesano.'

8/23/04 Coach Mike Jones: 'Remember when many kids graduated at the age of 17? You should be finished with HS at 18 but today it seems like it does not matter. We have kids repeating grades just to take advantage of basketball. There is no reason why people who should be seniors or juniors should be reclassified as sophomores or freshmen. Today we have 18 year olds that are headed to the 11th grade. Some kids are even doing poorly in their current schools now just to attend a prep school. Imagine if every kid with basketball dreams go back 2 grades. Imagine how the HS scene would look. Kids are getting to over hyped for thier grades. I am not here to name any players but they know who they are. If you are older than 18 you should not be an HS athlete. There is no reason why you should be 18 going to the 11th grade.'

8/22/04 Walt Wehner: 'I would like to correct the graduating date of three players from New Jersey. They are listed in the class of 2008 but they are actually class of 2009. The three attended the Adidas Jr. Phenom Camp in San Diego 2 weeks ago and all three performed very well. They are Kevin Brown from Corey Irving All Stars, Dexter Strickland from Team New Jersey and Kyle Wehner from the Bayshore Bulldogs. At the Adidas camp, Dexter played in the All-Star game and Kyle led his team in scoring in 3 games scoring a team high 17 points in his teams only win. In the picture attached, Dexter is on left, Kevin is center and Kyle to the right.'

8/22/04 Coach Science Mapp: August 6th-13th National AAU 9U Tournament Results.

8/21/04 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): The FYA/SLAM 2K4 Basketball Tournament championship games, played on August 14th were very exciting in every division. In the 11U Kings defeated FYA by the score of 26 - 20, 13U went to a very talented Juice All Stars team, they defeated FYA by the score of 32 - 29, 15U FYA defeated Juice All Stars by the score of 76 - 70 in overtime, 17U FYA defeated Xmen by the score of 85 - 80. Everyone was a winner that day, 1st and 2nd place teams received trophies.'

8/20/04  Coach Jimmy Salmon: 'The 2nd Annual Rev. Dr. Frank Napier Scholarship Fund Tournament begins tonight @ Don Bosco Tech in Paterson, NJ. There are 8 teams and will be 4 games. At 6PM Paterson Catholic HS takes on Irvington HS; @ 7PM, Fredrick Douglas Academy of Harlem takes on Paterson Eastside HS; @ 8PM Paramus Catholic HS takes on Paterson Kennedy and at 9PM Passaic County Tech will take on Englewood HS.  The winners will play on Saturday, August 21, starting @ 2PM and the 3rd place and CHIP will be on Sunday, August 22 starting @ 2PM. There are a lot of quality players participating in this event. We hope all can come out and support this cause. All proceeds will go to the Napier Fund which helps local Paterson, NJ students who are about to begin their first year in college.'

8/19/04  John P Miciotta: 'According to published reports former Don Bosco Prep center John Oates has accepted a scholarship to Boston College. He will begin play there this fall which means he will not be attending Blair Academy this season as had been widely reported. John brings good size (6'10") and a soft shooting touch to the Eagles and has worked hard to improve his footwork, balance and conditioning. Also he and his dad have always been accessible and helpful to us at "High Hoops" and with that in mind we wish good luck and continued success to not only a fine player and person, but a good friend.'

8/19/04 Record Online: Hoops Star will sow Oates at BC. Harriman resident prized recruit.

8/15/04 Superbiddy championship - LI Lightning 51, Team Roc 30. The Lightning led by only 23-18 at the half, but pulled away in the second half with Daniel Dingle (15), Myron Hickman (18) and Shane Rector (9) doing the scoring and point guard, Servio Ford (4) doing some dazzling dribbling. Team Roc's MVP, Raymond Logan (10) and Maurice Ballard (9) didn't have enough help stopping the Lightning champs.

Biddy champs - Team Roc 58, Gauchos 44.  Team Roc got hot in the playoffs beating undefeated Next Generation yesterday in the semis and the favored 'chos today in the championship. The Gauchos led 28-23 at the half but it was tied at 32 after three before Roc cruised to the final 14 point margin. Roc MVP Deshawn Wiggins had a team high 17 with help from Rahiem Hall (13), Shaquille Stokes (11) and Barry Watson (11). The Gauchos got a game high 19 from Doron Lamb but he cooled in the second half after being perfect from the field in the first half. Gauchos point guard Malik Atkins was active offensively and defensively the entire game, but an off performance by forward Shane Southwell was too much for the Gauchos to overcome.

Midget championship - Gauchos 41, Future Stars 39. Luckily for the Gauchos there wasn't a fifth period. They led 16-4 after one, 25-16 at the half and 32-29 after three with the game tied at 37 and 39 in the last minute. That's when Daryl (Truck) Bryant scored 3 of his 5 points and got the final assist to center Allen Forbes for the game winning basket. I wasn't at IS8 but in that last minute I could almost hear Pete Edwards saying, 'Who wants the rock now?'  Truck did and that was the difference. The Gauchos Dre Calloway and the Stars Quinten Seaberry each led their teams with 12 point efforts.

Junior championship -- Metro Hawks 56, Future Stars 46. This was the Hawks 16's versus the Hawks 15's and every player on each team took the game way too emotionally. The result was a lot of very good players playing very poorly.  Mike Coburn's 15 was high for Metro while Hickman Simmons had a game high 19 for the Stars.

Senior championship Bingos All Stars 77, Dyckman Youth Enterprise 67. Ryan Leak was not on hand for Bingo's semifinal upset of Wake-Eden but he had a game high 18 for Bingo as the team's regular season leading scorer and MVP, Jason Holmes settled for 10. Bingo's Californian 6-8 center import Lindsay Robinson had 12 and again made controlled the paint. Edgar Sosa (17) and team MVP, Eric Hedly (16) were tops for DYE.  The game was 16-15 Bingo after one before DYE imploded in the second quarter trailing 41-21 at the half. That was too much to overcome in the second half.

Daniel Dingle is the LI Lightning Superbiddy MVP center. Deshaun Wiggens is the Team Roc 5-8 Biddy MVP forward.  Dre Calloway is the 5-9 Gauchos MVP midget forward.  Mike Coburn is the 5-11 Metro Hawks Midget MVP combo guard. Jason Holmes is the Bingo All Stars 6-3 MVP Senior forward.

8/15/04 Coach Paul Suber: 'The "St. Raymond's Basketball Camp" held at St. Raymond's High School (Mon., Aug. 9th thru Fri., Aug. 13th) was a success. The camp was well organized and stacked with talent. Coach Antigua and staff (which included his current and former players along with some excellent A.A.U. coaches) did a great job teaching lessons on basketball and life skills and kept everyone on their "P's and Q's." There were two leagues N.C.A.A. and N.B.A. which were based on age and talent level. Both leagues had some very intense and competitive games all the way to the championships. Here are some of the camp award winners: Playmaker Award - Andre Rose and   Justine Umpierre. Leading Rebounder Kennedy Gomez and Allen Forbes. Mr. Hustle Donald Niang and Robert Hall. Mr. Stations Kevin O'Keefe and Delroy Dailey. Sportsmanship Greg Wilkinson and Frank Russo. Camper of the Week Brian Curran and Alvin Shackleford. Most Improved Jalen Lacourt and Jo Jo Trinkle. M.V.P. Da'Shawn Suber and Daryl "Truck" Bryant. The Camp's All-Stars were: Roget Romain, Tavon Sledge, Myron Hickman, Steve Whittingham, Charles Matthews, Lenny Toussaint, Davon Jenkins, Jamel Nelson, Yannick Gordon, Mohammed Ali, Vinnie Decicco, Robert Young, Khalid Straker, Allen Forbes, Daniel Dingle, Ian Umpierre,   Da'Shawn Suber, E.J. Freeman and   Daryl "Truck" Bryant.'

8/15/04 Kevin Brown: '6'1 Class of 2009 combo guard Leonard Hayes and 5'4 point KJ Brown combined for 28 points last night in the Lawnside Heritage League semi-finals in Lawnside, NJ. KJ showed his range hitting 4 3's and dishing to teammates while Leonard proved himself a very capable perimeter player scoring in transition and with his consistent outside shot. Their "blue" team defeated the "white" team 90-39 to earn a spot in the championship game this week. The Heritage League has played host to some great South Jersey players over the years including Terrell Baker (University of Florida standout), Christian Thompson (high scoring Haddon Heights frosh) and Antraye Miles (former Winslow Twp. star).

8/14/04  All of today's UDC semifinals were played at their rain site, Evander Childs High School, just one block south of Gun Hill Road and Barnes Avenue. All of tomorrow's games will also be played there.

In the first UDC biddy game this morning Team Roc's star players, Deshaun Wiggens and point guard Shaquille Stokes got their team off to a 16-10 first quarter lead over undefeated Next Generation before each got their third foul midway through the second quarter. At the half it was tied at 22 but the Roc stars returned for a 7 point third quarter lead and hung on for a 48-46 win. Deshaun finished with a game high 23 while forward Ryshiem Hall had 12 points and numerous crucial rebounds. The Next Generation point guard, J Aaron had 16 points and 8 steals to lead his team. TR will play the Gauchos in the chip as Mt Vernon forfeited their semi match.

The Gauchos and Metro Hawks were late for their midget game after playing to a 'chos overtime victory against the Hawks at the Ruckers tournament earlier. Incredibly this game also went to overtime and again the Gauchos won 50-42 after a 40 all regulation tie. Dre Calloway, Darryl (Truck) Bryant, Jonathan Riggs and Allan Forbes each started and starred for the 'chos, who'll meet the Future Stars in tomorrow's biddy final. The Future Stars (Metro Hawks B) got 12 each from Quinton Serberry and Anthony Quevero plus 9 from Orlando Minott, going wire to wire against New Heights 42-33. All three Future Stars freshmen to be are headed for Gompers this fall. L Perry was high for the Heights.

The junior championship will be a Metro Hawks affair as the Hawks scorched Gotham Reign 63-42 as Mike Coburn led a balanced Hawk attack that offset a game high 21 point effort from GR's impressive point guard, Arjou Perovic. Then the Future Stars took the Bingo All Stars 63-46 with Hickman Simmons posting a game high (day high?) 28 points for the Stars. Despite the final score it looked glum for the Future Stars in the first quarter when their star point guard, Malik Boothe left the court after a head on collision with one of his opponents. Bingo led 13-11 after one before Malik made it back to the court in the second quarter. It was 30-22 at the half and the Stars never looked back.

But Bingo got its revenge in the first senior semi versus a strong Wake-Eden team. They trailed 26-16 at the half and 34-26 after three before pulling off a 47-46 win in the game's final minute. Their 6-7 center Lindsay Robinson had a great block and K Gordon a final layup for the win. Bingo's Jason Holmes had  a game high 16 for his team.

Andrew Gabriel, 6-5 sophomore forward for the Metro Hawks and Christ the King.  Dre Calloway, 5-9 wing forward for the Gauchos will attend Rice this fall. Ray Grayson, 6-4 sophomore forward for Gotham Reign and Friends Academy in Brooklyn.  Lance Fuertado,  is the 6-2 Metro Hawks, Uniondale forward. . Josh Spivey is the 5-10  Wings Academy point guard who plays for the Bingo All Stars this summer.

8/4/04 Coach Wee Francis: 'This weekend the attention will be out in Brooklyn. My 12 & under team (Wee's All-stars) once again in the playoffs in the Stephon Marbury Classic "Jason Juice Sowell." Some of my players start the Brooklyn show early. Armani Cardwood from Brooklyn will represent Brooklyn USA in the Show Me What You Got tournament hosted by Jake Edwards. They will play against Juice Crew All-stars and both teams are undefeated. Another one of my players that will be on the Brooklyn scene this weekend is Daquon Erving. Daquon plays on my 10 & under team. This weekend he will be at the Brower Park tournament representing the Kwatny Brooklyn Panthers. Daquon, the little cousin of Gary Erving had a tremendous game last week for me at Young World scoring 15 of the 17 points and hitting clutch free throws to win in overtime. Both of these players have been with me since day one and are definitely going to be amongst the elite in the years to come. Also, look for Wee's All-stars in the following Brooklyn tournaments Mo Kirby, Coney Island Back to School Classic and the well known Miccio P. A. L. Center Invitational.'

8/2/04 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): We are having a great summer, our seniors are set for college, and our summer programs are doing well. In our Basketball Development Camp at Erasmus Hall High School, we have the best 3 year old player in the world, he can pass, dribble, and run. He follows instructions better than some 8 and 9 year olds, and we are in our 5th week I have yet to see a tear. All the security officers are amazed at seeing him in action everyday. I would tell you his name, but we don't want to spoil him so early. He is nicknamed Roscoe, the eighth wonder of the world.

On this past Saturday, FYA had a memorial all star game for Jamel France, a former player who was killed last year. It was great to see the turnout for this very important ceremony, the game went well, and in the park, our youth were blessed by The Real Life Church, who were having a youth rally on the same day.

The FYA/SLAM basketball tournament is in its playoffs. The championship target date is set for Saturday August 14th at Bildersee Park East 81st Street and Flatlands Avenue  We are still taking applications for The Prime Time Basketball (sleep away) Camp, from August 15th to August 20th, any further questions 718 666 6534 or 718 434 0127.'
