September 2004
9/30/04 Coach Mark Parisi: 'The first season of King of the Hill at
IS 5 is almost over. We are down to the championship games which will be
played next Tuesday at 7 and 8pm. Last night two hard fought games were played
as Queens Finest 13u girls beat the Lady Jokers 50-49 on a Jane Walsh
game winning jumper with 4 clicks on the clock. A great game also by
Else Nadema and Brianna Cannellini. Great job by head coach
Jeffrey Attard. The Queens Finest 11u Boys also had a very hard win last
night against the NJ Dynasty..40-38
9/30/04 Antonio Cannon Sr: 'The 16u T.K. Allstar team completed
pool play at 3-0 defeating The L.I. Lightning last night 65-64 @ Gauchos
Roundball. The L.I. Lightning jumped on us early picking apart our zone defenses
to race out to a 13pt. first half lead. We made the defensive adjustment
to a fullcourt man to man defense, enabling us to pull within 1 at the half.
The momentum continued in our favor to start the second half as we went up
9 points, before the Lightning made their run to pull within 1. That's as
close as the Lightning got, as we traded baskets the rest of the way.
Justin Davis led the way with 16pts. and 12 rebounds. Deytwan
Hill 12pts, 3 steals, Tony Dennison, Shaun Willoughby, Johnnie
Barnes each chipped in 10 points. 9/30/04 12th Annual Sullivan Games - boys Bronx and Manhattan. 9/30/04 Daily News: Kevin White turns up at August Martin. 9/30/04 NY Post: PSAL honcho, Martin Oestreicher, says transfers not tricky. 9/30/04 Newsday: Late bloomer's debut. Roland is an extremely underrated player who started playing basketball only 3 years ago. He is probably the best shooter in the class of 2007. This is coming from someone who practiced with him every day for 4 months. Roland is not only a good student, but a good teammate and a great friend. Good Luck!' 9/27/04 Coach Ruben Tavarez: 'Two weeks ago LPAC played against the NY Elite Team in IS8. When the re-cap of the game was placed on the site, it said that Quinlan Brown scored 25 points for LPAC. This is an error, because Quinlan Brown is living in Virgina. I received a call last night and I was accused of using someone else under Quinlan Brown's name, which is not true. The team player that scored the 25 points was Owen Brow from Morris High School. Please make this correction, as the family of Quinlan Brown were concerned due to fact the Quinlan Brown no longer living in New York. 9/26/04 Both Playaz clubs, black and gold, won their first games this morning at IS8 as the black team led wire to wire against Team Underrated and the gold gored the Gauchos 95-74. In the day's first game Rock Steady easily took Chaminade 79-59. More on the IS8 Tip-off Fall Classic, 2004 page. 9/26/04 Daily News: Elvis Lora picks Florida International University. 9/26/04 Booksnball: 'The NYC PSAL has put together a great clinic for Saturday, October 2 at Cardozo H. S. starting at 9 a.m. Prominent local coaches, Tom Pecora (Hotstra), Joe Jones (Columbia) and new St. John's head coach Norm Roberts have committed to share their expertise with attending coaches. One more coach is expected to be added and PSAL Boy's coaches (Varsity & J. V.) are expected to attend. Additional details are available at PSAL.org. Personal observation here - the overall level of PSAL coaching can only get better if more and more coaches realize that attending several clinics a year is part of the process of improving your knowledge/awareness as a coach. All too many times I have been at local clinics and observed multiple CHSAA & PvtHS veteran coaches taking notes and looking for "new" ideas to pass on to their players and sadly, only see one or two PSAL coaches (out of 200 +). Hopefully with the increased efforts of the PSAL to provide improved and additional services to their coaches, will the coaches step up and take advantage of the opportunities. Gradually the benefits will reach the student-athletes of the PSAL basketball teams and that's what this is all about.' 9/26/04 NJ Hoops: Louisville bound duo star at Midnight Madness. 9/25/04 Newsday: Danny Green picks Tar Heels. This year's team will, of course, feature former Lincoln star Antonio Pena as one of its stars. While we wish him luck as he moves there to play for coach (and Molloy alum) Jere Quinn, it is worth noting that two other New Yorkers who are not quite as well known as "Tone" will join him there and be solid contributors also. Kevin Spann, the quick and smart point man who played previously for coach John Walsh at St. John the Baptist, will provide a steady hand for a talented group of players. White Plains native Quentin Martin is a classic blue collar worker around the basket. At 6'5" his nose for the ball and great motor make him an effective rebounder against taller players. His diligent work inside will provide a perfect complement for Pena as he tries to expand his game and move away from the hoop. Both Spann and Martin should draw division one looks, and we trust that with the guidance of Coach Quinn they will make good college choices.' Web note: There are two entries added to the 05 post grads page.

His diligence, generosity and ability to reach young children through basketball will definitely be missed.' 9/20/04 Rob Williams NYC Heat: 'The Open Division of the Fall Jam Fest at Seton Hall will hold a special memory for NYC Heat as it was the first matchup for head coach Nate Cadogan and asst. coach Chuck Vance against their former team, the LI Panthers. The Heat came out on top with enthused play from Vernon Teel, Shahee Martin and Altariq Wagner whose defense set the tone for the offensive barrage. All weekend Tyrone Cook was big behind the 3 pt arc, with Andre Davis' solid post play and huge shot blocks. However that game probably took it's toll mentally as we lost a close one to the Fairfield Stars in the semis. Building a lead in the first half, unable to sustain, we gave it away early in the second, with big shots by Doug Wiggins. With the momentum swing back our way, we blew opportunites at the end with a missed layup and a turnover. We are highly enthused about the spring 2005, you would think these Heat were playing together for a while. Newcomers (Juniors) Laurence Joliceure (Holy Cross), Tony Dennison (Bryant) and Jamal Youngblood (St Patricks) were a pleasure as they not only did the job from the bench shutting down first and second units but added buckets like a first unit. Daquan Cook's (St Patrick) defense on the perimeter on "the guy" is to be commended, while Milan Prodanovic (Molloy) went down after a rolled ankle in the paint on a defensive rebound.' 9/20/04 Antonio Cannon, Sr: 'The T.K. Allstar 16u boys team advances to the Championship game of the Almighty Force Back to School competition with a 62-56 victory on Saturday over the previously undefeated Brooklyn B & D Players (Thomas Jefferson H.S. players). Deytwan Hill led four players in double figures with 19pts., Justin Davis 15pts. 10 rebounds, Antonio Cannon, Jr. 10pts. 6 assists, Johnny Barnes 10pts. 6 rebounds. On Sunday, T.K. traveled up to the Bronx, to begin pool play, in the Gaucho Roundball Classic. T.K. came away with a hard fought win over the Metro Hawks (white) 49-45. Tony Dennison & Deytwan Hill finished with 11pts each. Shaun Willoughby 10pts, Justin Davis 10pts, 14 rebounds, 2 steals and a block shot. Due to the untimely death on Sunday morning of Coach Don Aiken of the Almighty Force Family, the date and time of the Almighty Force Back to School championship game has been postponed until further notice. For those of you who didn't have the pleasure to meet coach Don I can tell you, the Southside Queens Community suffered a huge loss! Coach Aiken was the founder of the Proud & Powerful Basketball program, as well as big brother to countless youths of his beloved community. Let's all take a moment of silence, in his memory. Coach Don, leaves behind a wife and three kids, to carry on his legacy. For information on his going home services, please contact Mr. Shahee Martin @ (718) 810-7084.' 9/20/04 NY Hoops: News & Rumors: Fields and Stone Stay Put. 9/20/04 Week one results are on the IS8 Tip-off Fall Classic, 2004 page. 9/20/04 NJ Hoops: The Playaz outscored the Fairfield County (CT) Stars 77 - 53 in the championship of the 12th grade division of the Hoop Group's Fall Jam Fest at Seton Hall University. 9/20/04 Rodrick C. Bussey Brooklyn-Queens Warriors(Scholars Through Sports Foundation): 'We ventured over to S. Orange, NJ with a very young and inexperienced team to compete in the Hoop Grroup's Fall Jamfest. We competed hard, but was overmatched against the Playaz team and the Master' s Hoop team from Virginia. Duran Velasquez (Forest Hills) and Kenneth Carlisle (Thomas Edison) did a good job competing on a high level against the competition. I would like to thank Adam Chiappano and the rest of the Hoop Group for putting together another good tournament. The B-Q Warriors will travel to Dunmore, PA to compete in the Hoop City U.S.A. Fall Classic on September 25-26.' 9/20/04 Coach Jeff Rivera, Team Genesis: 'We played this weekend at Seton Hall in the HoopGroup Fall Jam we advanced to the Semifnals where we were defeated by Team Next the game was tight throughout. Team next opened up a 10 point lead with 3 minutes remaining and closed it out for the win. We had good all around play all weekend from Chris Abney, Hass Amini, Fred Doergler, Morgan Kelly, Darwin Lynch, Scottie McCrae, Rocco Rubino, James Galanos, Jayson Philippe, Shavar Richardson, Jeff Rivera Jr. and George Jackson.' 9/20/04 Metro Hoops: Zack Rosen Making his point. 9/20/04 Anthony Nicodemo: Week 2 results on the Westchester's Best Fall League page. 9/20/04 Coach Ron Dennis of K.Y.D.A: 'This is an update on members of Keep Your Dreams Alive class of 2004. 9/19/04 Coach Eric Rock Eisenberg: 'On Friday morning I had the privilege to attend the moving funeral for New York City Detective Robert "Bobby" Parker. I did not know Detective Parker well before this sad and emotional day but I feel I know him now! What a giant this man was both in stature and in deeds. Detective Parker was a man who walked tall and yet always had compassion for all those he met. As I sat and listened to all the speakers I realized how lucky we all at Tilden High School were to have had a man like this in our precinct the 67th. The men and women of this great precinct always help us at Tilden whenever we need them for both good events and bad. I would like to say to all the police officers and fire fighters out there we love and respect you and the job you do for all of us each day. When the time is right and with the permission of the families of Detective Parker and Rafferty we will be holding a basketball game to benefit the families of our two 67th Precinct heroes, Detective Patrick Rafferty and Detective Robert Parker who gave there lives defending our community.' 9/19/04 John P Miciotta: 'Contained in the "heard in the halls" portion of the Newsday article September 17th which talked about John Garcia's verbal commitment to Seton Hall, is another pledge worth noting. Tyrone Hansen the smooth shooting 6'5" forward from St. Mary's High on Long Island has decided to attend Monmouth College. Hansen has been overlooked a bit on a St. Mary's team that features fellow seniors Danny Green and Tyson Johnson as its stars. He is not only a solid contributor for the Gaels but his outstanding outside shooting likely will help him fit well into the "Princeton-Style" motion offense coach Dave Calloway and the Hawks have used successfully. He is the second St. Mary's player to commit to coach Calloway's program in recent years. Former Gaels' guard Dwayne Byfield blossomed into an all conference performer for the Hawks as a sophomore two years ago, before battling early season injuries to put together a strong finish to his junior campaign. Congratulations to Tyrone, to Dave Calloway and his staff at Monmouth, and to St. Mary's coach Tim Cluess for a job well done by all.' 9/19/04 NJ Hoops: The Heat overcomes Zoo Crew at Hoop Group Jam Fest. 9/19/04 NY Hoops: Starrett Puts Everybody on Notice at IS8. 9/18/04 Coach Maxwell "Bingo" Cole: 'The Bingo's Allstars is holding try-outs on Sunday September 26,2004 for boys ages 11-12 at 1:00pm and boys ages 14-15 at 3:00pm. I recently was at a brief tournament with my Brooklyn Rams team at the St. Johns Rec and all I could really notice was while the game was going on, when he made calls that some kids didn't like, they always had the respect for him to never try and disrespect his authority. And he honestly must have been a great influence on all the kids in the neighborhood.' 9/7/04 Antonio Cannon, Sr: 'The 16u T.K. 9/6/04 Brooklyn Scout: 'Nebraska scored its second verbal commitment from the New York-area when Will Harris, a 6-6 swingman from Queens, NY made it official during his weekend visit to Lincoln. The Huskers earlier received a commitment from Jamel White, a 6-2 combo guard from Brooklyn, NY. Harris recently transferred to Maine Central Institute from Redemption Christian Academy in Troy (NY), where he spent the past two years after starting his scholastic career at Christ the King HS. A strong and powerful presence inside who can step out and hurt opponents with his perimeter shooting, Harris attended both the ABCD and NBA Players Association camps this summer. Harris teamed with White to carry the Juice All-Stars to the championship of the recent Chase City Style Classic in New York. White scored 27 points and Harris had 22 points in the 76-65 title game win over Dyckman. Harris earned MVP honors for dropping 37 points, including 6 three-pointers, in a 98-83 semifinal win over the defending champion Gauchos, in which White added 17 points. White is headed to Laurinburg Prep (NC) after starring at Grady HS in Brooklyn. In limited action during his senior year to academic problems, he averaged 19 ppg. while helping the Falcons reach the PSAL city semifinals, where they lost to eventual champion Lincoln with NBA draftee Sebastian Telfair. White possesses an excellent long-range shooting touch and is also an excellent passer and penetrator.' 9/6/04 Jim Fox: 'The New York Elite Invitational, sponsored by the Long Island Lightning, concluded three days of play on September 6th. The Gold Pool semifinalists were Playaz Basketball Club, GC Ballers of Buffalo, D1 Greyhounds of Cincinnati and, Long Island Lightning. The D1 Greyhounds defeated Playaz Basketball Club while Lightning topped the GC Ballers. The championship game was one of the best and certainly most interesting ever played at Island Garden. Lightning came from sixteen points down in the second half to hand the Greyhounds one of its few defeats ever! Lightning was led by Darius Gabriel who scored 13 of his total 17 points in the second half during the comeback. Corey Fisher led Lightning with 21 points including a spinning lay-up with under three minutes left to put Lightning ahead for good. O.J. Mayo lived up to his national reputation by averaging 35 points in the tournament, including 37 in the final game. The final score was Lightning 83 and Greyhounds 80. In the Silver Bracket, Team Next rebounded from early loses in their pool to win three straight games and capture the Silver Crown. This was quite an accomplishment considering that Team Next was competing against teams one year older.'
9/6/04 Eric Medved, City Rocks Director of Player Personnel:
'This weekend's tournament at Island Garden was excellent. Several national
powerhouses competed including the D1 Greyhounds and Nike Team Florida. Other
teams that participated were the host Long Island Lighning, Albany CityRocks,
Team Next, Baltimore Stars, Philadelphia MJC, Playaz, GC Ballers, Ahead of
the Game and Houston Southwest Magic. In the championship game, the Long
Island Lightning defeated the D1 Greyhounds 83-80. D1 was an amazing 276-0
without a single defeat against their own age group in the history of their
program. Make that 276-1. 9/6/04 Paul Brown, Managing Director: 'The coaches meeting for this year Gauchos/Nike Roundball Tournament will be held on Wednesday, September 8th, 2004 at 7pm at the Gauchos Gym. After discussing the situation with his guardian, the wonderful Ms. Mattie Thomas we all felt that James needed to change his environment in order for him to have a chance to grow up and mature into the fine person and player he can be. James needs to accept the responsibility that all young men and women in today's tough world must bear. He needs to look in the mirror and wake up before life passes him by and he becomes another casualty in the over hyped New York City basketball world. I believe that James will end up at Paul Robeson with his friend Malcolm Grant. It will be tough to play against them and if James is eligible they will be a great backcourt tandem. I am sure that Larry Major will be able to get the best out of James if James buys into Coach Major's system and listens to what "Maj" tells him on and off the court. Good luck to James Mills and most of all to Ms. Mattie Thomas who is a super woman and the kind of parent any child would be lucky to have.' 9/1/04 Ben Asher: 'The Long Island Aces defeated the Woodside Fighting Phoenix to win the championship of the Woodside Fighting Phoenix 2004 Roundball Classic. Billy and Brandin Butler were named co-mvp's of the tournament. I'd like to thank Danny Kiernan for running a good tournament. On Thursday we head out to Magenta Playground in The Bronx to take on The Morris Brown Warriors for the championship of The Hidden Gems Basketball Invitational being run by K.Y.D.A where we are playing a year up in the 15U division. We defeated Morris Brown the first game of the year and we are looking to defeat them again. I'd like to also take this time to mention a player by the name of Maurice (Mo) Hughley. Mo is a 6'4 class of 2007 player who has been having a monster tournament in the Bronx. His average for the tournament has been around 20 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks a game. He has been dazzling the crowd and all out dominating. Mo will attend Martin Van Buren H.S this year.' 9/1/04 Coach Wee Francis: 'The summer is coming to an end. Wee's All-stars 12 & under took the chip at the Stephon Marbury basketball classic "Jason Juice Sowell." Congratulations to Shaquille Stokes for taking MVP. I'm disappointed that we didn't get an invitation to the Tournament of Champions in Brooklyn after taking the chip at Marbury. Two of my younger players made their presence known this past weekend in Brooklyn. Daquon Ervin took the MVP at the Spring Creek tournament 9 & under in Starrett City putting up 14 pts. in the championship game. Terrell Gist took the MVP at Brevoort Basketball tournament 12 & under. As always to all student athletes, get ready for the books and keep your grades on point! Also, to all student athlete parents, stay as interested in the school work as you did in the summer schedules!'
