Every game was played in front of jam packed gyms. They really love basketball on the West Coast, like we do on the East Coast. The kids had fun and the coaches Kimani Young, Eric Andrews (6th grade) and I really had a great experience out there. It was well worth the 5 hour (2300 miles) flight.' 2/24/05 Edwin Morales: 'Congratulations to Coach Murphy and his New Rochelle Huguenots on their tremendous victory over Mount Vernon. I had the opportunity of coaching some of his players with Chase The Game AAU program (McDermott, Parkes) and these kids always gave me 110% even when overmatched. Good Luck in the semifinals.' 2/24/05 Coach Tom Sampogna: 'The Connecticut Flame AAU program out of Greenwich, CT has moved their operations to Port Chester, NY and has changed the name of the program to The Flame AAU. He had to be the most untalked about freshman in New York. He is a 5' 5" guard with lightning quick ball handling and is a leader on the court. He is small in size but makes up for it with his court vision and his ability to drive and score. His jumpshot need a little help but it will come along with time and practice. Kazeem is attending Uniondale High School (not for too long). He was on the Jay Vee team but had a little problem with the coaching staff and he quit (that was a dumb move on his part) and is looking to transfer to Holy Cross or even St.Marys. I have a hard time remembering www.nycnjhoops.com/is80501.htm, for example, let alone the Pro Style and Africa Park links. I realize you give the link when there's an update, but sometimes I like to use the old pages as reference material.' Web note: That's why this site has a search engine on top of this front page. Add the bonus of being there to see Sebastian Telfair's #31 jersey retired and hung from the rafters of Lincoln's storied gym, I had to be there. I had the pleasure of sitting between Tom Konchalski, talent evaluator extraordinare and Vinny "On The Sidelines" Aceto for this special afternoon. You will read great accounts in the Daily News, the Post and Newsday who were all in attendance so I won't overwhelm you with details. Let me just say this. In over 30 years of watching city hoops I never saw a closer 17 point game, ever! The final score was 79-62 Lincoln, but after being down by 20 points at one time Morris closed to 59-58 & with 3 minutes left it was 64-60 Lincoln and then Lincoln exploded on a 15-2 run led by great steals and passing of Kevin White. As the game ended the Lincoln crowd was relieved after seeing Morris H.S. leave their hearts out on the court. Once again the player that impressed me the most was 6'2" Sr. Owen Brow (my mistake calling him Owen Brown on Wed.) If there is a tougher, more competitive player in the city (both PSAL & CHSAA) I didn't see him this year. Tom Konchalski told me at game's end Owen Brow had scored 21 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Stats can't do his performance justice. His hustle, steals, unselfish play & many spectacular passes to open teammates had many people nodding their heads in knowing respect at the fact they had just seen a special NYC player. I hope this youngman keeps working hard on his studies and qualifies for NCAA Div I competition. Hopefully we'lll get a chance to see him play in Hank Carter's annual Wheelchair classic this Spring on the Bronx team. College coaches should be heating up the phone lines to Morris this week! Anthony started AAU ball with the Art Pierson and me and the MSU Skyliners. With my advice he moved on to his current travel team which is Team New Jersey. I've known Anthony since he was 6 and coached his older brother when I first started coaching AAU basketball. I should not have written that when he enters HS that he would be playing in the Playaz basketball organizaton because it's not confirmed. What I should of said is that Anthony will most likely be on a "Sponsored" team when he enters his HS years because he's that good. That "Sponsored" team could very well be Team New Jersey or even The New Jersey All-Stars out here in Jersey. Hopefully this clears up any confusion I may of caused with that post. I did not mean any harm with it. I was just name dropping to let you guys over in New York know this kid is going to be a name to remember in the coming 4 years.' 2/16/05 Newsday: Holy Cross 61, Molloy 53. McClancy (16-6 overall, 12-4 league) is playing for 2nd place in the division with a win. St. John's is coming off clinching first place in the CHSAA 'A.' This will be a good event to see some of the top talent in our division as SJP will come in with D1 recruit Richard Thomas (senior), while we will counter with league leading scorer Stephen "Sticks" Wood (junior). Another notable player that isn't getting much spotlight is junior Terrence Howard. Terrence is top 20 in our league in scoring while playing an average of about 30 minutes per game. Terrence contributes on both the offensive and defensive side of the court. He is a marginal D1 player who could relaly make some noise his senior season, and has his best years of basketball are ahead of him (he is a year younger than most juniors). Ron has given 30+ years of meritorious service to the student/athletes of NYC. He has also been a role model and mentor to many players and coaches throughout his 17 year tenure as the head basketball coach @New Utrecht High School. I consider myself privileged to have worked with Ron as his assistant and jv coach for 13 years. It was a rewarding experience for me to work with someone who always put his players and staff ahead of himself. I am proud to say that he has been a mentor and father figure to me as I was beginning my professional career as a teacher and coach. It was great to see him on the sidelines once again this season as he readies himself for a continued coaching career down in Florida. Since becoming the head coach @New Utrecht 6 years ago, I have found out how hard it is to run a competitive high school basketball program and how talented Ron was at putting this program together year after year. All of the things I learned next to him will remain with me for the rest of my career. I cannot thank him enough for the experience he allowed me to share with him. So at this time I would like to say to Ron and his wife Donna: May the sun always shine on your face and the wind always be at your back and the road rise up to meet you wherever you go! God's speed to you and your family. I would also like to thank Eric "Rock " Eisenberg for putting together a wonderful retirement dinner for Ron Vernon this past week. Rock has been a true leader in the basketball community throughout NYC and as Mike (Legs) Levine has always said "PSAL basketball is the best" and we should always remember our tradition and honor the great educators who work with our student/athletes.' 2/4/05 Anthony Nicodemo: 'The Section One Boys' Basketball Tournament schedule is now available. And Top 15 Week 9. 2/4/05 Terence (t-bone) Johnson: 'Anthony Baskerville of Maxson Middle School in Plainfield,NJ scored 48 points had 14 steals and 7 assist vs North Plainfield . The 5'8 8th grader hit 9 three pointers in the contest and had 30 at the half of the Maxson 95-67 victory. And to be honest, Anthony could have scored 60 yesterday but decided to go for a triple-double, passing up layup just to get his teammates involved in this historic game (unofficially a school record for pts in a game). AB is currently ranked in the top 100 in the nation according to Hoopscooponline.com. Look for that ranking to go up after this spring and summer when AB is showcased with the #1 8th grade team in NJ, Team NJ, (But don't tell that to The Lloyd Daniels Running Rebels who beat them earlier in the winter). Anthony will most likely be with the Playaz Basketball organization when he enters HS. Family members are looking at St.Patricks or Plainfield HS next season for Anthony.
