After losing the opening game in a tough battle to Nike Team Ferrari, the Gauchos went on to win their next 6 games to bring home the championship. The semi-final game vs All-Ohio Red (the home team) was probably the best game of the tournament. We squeaked out at 67-63 win and I must say the referees did a great job of keeping control of a very heated contest. Darryl "Truck" Bryant, Curtis Loving and Jonathon Riggs finished the game with 24, 21 and 18 points respectively. All three, in addition to Dave Johnson Jr were named to the All-Tournament team and 6' 6" Curtis Loving was the tournament MVP. The championship game was a rematch vs Nike Team Ferrari. The game was close throughout but our fourth quarter defense shut Ferrari down and we was able to pull away for a 64-57 victory. Our MVP of the championship game was shooting guard Kyle Smyth who answered a late Ferrari three with an NBA range three of his own to keep the game close. Kevin Williams, Allan Forbes and Dante Taylor all made valuable contributions to our goal and that was to bring the gold back to NYC.' 3/25/05 Rudy King: 'There are only (6) days left to nominate players for the 2nd Annual Right Bounce Basketball Showcase games @Long Island University June 4-5 featuring the top 8th, 9th and 10th grade boys. They're like great bottles of wine-they get better with age! Both coaches have solid groups of underclassmen returning for 05-06 and should be heard from again come play-off time. Words of wisdom to all of our underclassmen. This is the time of year where it's important to keep your pencils even sharper then your passes. Failing classes can equal summer school, no camps, limited traveling with teams and ineligibility for next season. As the annual transition is made from the high school season to "outside" hoops everyone can win by having the spring, summer & fall coaches step up and put a strong emphasis on individual academic responsibility. Back in the spring of 2003 at the "State of Basketball" summit meeting at Brooklyn College there seemed to be universal support for not traveling on SAT weekends or on the weekends before final exams in May/June. At the very least be part of the solution and talk to all of your players and motivate them to take care of their responsibilities. Best of luck to all of our student-athletes and those individuals who do a great job working with them both on and off the court.' 3/20/05 NJ.com: St. Pat's gets giant effort from 6-8 forward, Yannick Formbornono. 3/20/05 Metro Hoops: Tournament Of Champions semifinal. 3/20/05 Courier Post: Haddonfield falls. The actions heats up tonight when the PSAL"B" Champion will be crowned after Bushwick H. S. squares off against Environmental Studies at St. Francis College in Brooklyn at 7 p.m. In the Bronx Friday night at Fordham, the CHSAA will have NYC CHSAA runner up (lost Thursday to Xavarian in a great game) Rice H. S. face nationally ranked St. Mary's H. S. of Long Island. The winner of that game plays Xavarian for the right to go upstate to Glen Falls next week.(more about this terrible idea later) while St. John's Prep plays St. Anthony of L. I. - winner to Glenn Falls. Ten miles south at MSG the PSAL will host it's annual basketball championship celebration starting at 11a.m with Francis Lewis trying to take the title away from nationally ranked Murray Bergtraum who is the defending PSAL Champs for six consecutive seasons! Mike Eisenberg of Lewis & Ed Grazinski of Bergtraum are two great coaches with several Div.I prospects on both teams making this a "get there early & enjoy the game," time. At 1p.m J. F. Kennedy of the Bronx returns to the Garden after a 5 year hiatus (they beat Lincoln in 2000) to face the Lincoln Railsplitters who are three time defending champions search for an unprecedented (for boys) 4th PSAL title. Both schools play like they created the concept of T.E.A.M.='s Together Everyone Achieves More, so it should be a great match-up. The PSAL winners all go to Glen Falls next Thursday. Will someone make the coffee real strong the next time the upstate & city CHSAA representatives meet to discuss play-off formats? This ridiculous idea that the CHSAA runner up (Rice) plays the Long Island CHSAA for the right top play the CHSAA City Champ (Xavarian two days later on Sunday makes two kinds of sense [no sense & nonsense). Meaning that if Rice wins over St. Mary's Friday they replay Xavarian (the 2005 city champs) and they go upstate & Xavarian goes home! If St. Mary's wins they go up-state & no city CHSAA "AA" team goes any where but home. Is the reason financial? Find more sponsors! Can anyone explain this in a logical, reasonable manner? Don't even try. The city champs deserve to play upstae. Let Long Islands' CHSAA representative play upstate with the winner playing NYC. PS, if the coffee doesn't work, I'll donate a case of Rolling Rock! Come on guys change this format for 2006! Almost forgot-special kudos to the PSAL for not charging admission for the 500+ loyal fans who braved that crazy blizzard type weather on Tuesday at SJU's semifinal games. The 14s went undefeated dominating a pool that included Barrington, Filly Sol, Hoop Zone, and the South Jersey Playaz. Leonard Hayes III, Kenny Battle, Haleem Peanut Hayward, Ivory Wells, Malik Wayns and Jakeem Bogans turned in a tremendous effort playing the entire weekend with a 6-man roster. It was refreshing to see Coach Terrell Baker on the bench with the Cory Erving 14s. Terrell is a former All State player in New Jersey who went on to play in the ACC for Florida State and professionally in Europe. He is a great teacher, trainer and coach and his ability to get a talented bunch to play together and fight through being short-handed was outstanding.' 3/7/05 Coach Bob Larson : 'Rockland County Basketball was at its finest Saturday night in the CYO County Championship game for 8th grade Boys. St. Grerg's was lead by 6'5" Kenny Click and Nick Delango who each had 13 points. St. Francis was led by Kevin McCahey with 11 points. Although the game was intense and loose balls brought the players scrambling and hustling, sportsmanship was at its highest and the sold out crowd at Albertus Magnus High School were treated to an excellent game. The Red-Storm won the championship with less personnel. Last year's team bolstered the likes of 6' 8" Fordham U. Bryant Dunston, 6' 3" Utica College Gary Graham (Long Range Shooter) 5' 10 P.G. Serge Clement, 6' 3" Jacques Fulcher and 5' 8" Oscar Haynes. All were outstanding players in 2004. Coach Gatto and Coach Garnes had to rely on a few good men all season long to play hard and to leave it on the court. Last night those good men answered their coaches with the C.H.S.A.A. Class A Championship. Richard Thomas, Chris Williams, Richard Jean-Baptiste, Jelanie Winfield, Antoine Greg and Eric Rosado were the remaining members from team 2004. These players beat the odds and by winning game after game without applying pressure to themselve which ultimately led to the city championship. In year 2000 The Red-Storm team featured McDonald All America Taliek Brown, Omar Malcom, Dwayne Thompson a team loaded with talent that fell short in the championship game loosing to Xavier H.S. Team 2004 lost the same way to La Salle Academy H.S. Last night victory was extra special as the fans from both schools was treated to outstanding shooting by the Mountaineers of Mount St Michaels and the Red-Storm of St Johns Prep. Last night's contest wasn't decided until the third quarter when undersized St John Prep took advantage by attacking the bigger MTSM players by pulling them out of their zone with good shooting and dribble drive moves by SJP bigger players. The final in the contest was 68 SJP to 51 MSM.' 3/5/05 Daily News: Regis takes an encore. Red Storm makes amends in 'A' title game. 3/5/05 Booksnball: 'Congratulations to St. John's Prep for winning the CHSAA Class "A" Championship 68-51 Friday night over Mount St. Michael. Coach Jim Gatto (recent member of the 500 win club!) and his assistant Lou Garnes did an excellent job in guiding the SJP to a 25-1 record. This is coach Gatto's first championship since his back to back 78 & 79 CHSAA titles when the school was known as Mater Christi. The last original St. John's Prep title was won in 1950! After the first quarter the Red Storm was up 17-13 and seemed on the verge of building a double digit lead but Coach Tom Fraher's Mountaineers hit six 3 pointers in the first half (led by Sr. Jason Hurt 4/4) and SJP was up 31-26 at the half. Timely shooting and the strong inside play of the Mount's big and talented Jrs. 6'6" Alejo Rodriquez and 6''7" Preston Uwoghiren were keeping it close for the first two minutes of the 3rd & then SJP seemingly switched to another gear and outscored the Mount 22-10 to lead 53-36 after 3 periods. SJU's four senior players were in double figures (thanks Bert Beagle for the stats!) led by 6'4" senior Richard Thomas (should be All-City) with 22 points from all over the court. PG 6'2" Chris Williams showed great leadership with 6 assist and 11 points. The duo of 6'4" Richard Jean Baptist with 19 points and 6'4" Jelani Winfield with 16 points outfought the bigger Mountaineers and helped keep SJP well ahead throughout the last quarter. These four seniors with the tough defense of 5'10" Antoine Gregg, 6'2" Rudy Germain and hustling Eric Rosado combined to make sweet music like a well rehearsed jazz band & displayed team basketball at its highest level throughout. The 68-51 final brought the well represented SJP crowd (students, staff and familles) out of their seats with prolonged cheers for their Little Redmen team. It was nice to see CTK's Bob Oliva, Tom Murray of Cardinal Hayes and many more of Coach Gatto's CHSAA colleagues genuinely happy for him and his team. SJP will play next Sunday (3-13) at Fordham University the winner of a midweek match up between Long Island's St.Anthony and the winning school from the upstate Catholic League. The winner next Sunday will travel to Glen Falls for the State Tournament (March 18 & 19).
