He had a vision and a mission to bring professional and competitiveness back into streetball. He did that by coordinating a competitive Women's League, Men's League and now and up and coming Youth League division. So, now in his passing my brother and I are carrying his legacy. We are the first outdoor tournament to have two fiberglass backboards where we have our Youth League playing on the courts and the Men's League playing on another one. We are the first to have an outdoor scoreboard, outdoor shot clocks, televised our Youth League division games on BronxNet television as well as our Men's League. We are the only East Coast tournament sponsored by Adidas. We also have top sponsors supporting our league like Mountain Dew, Boost Mobile, Coor's Light, XXL, SLAM Magazine, Adidas and ESPN. We have games every Saturday and Sunday from 11am - 6pm from June 11th - August 14th. We were led by Ricky Mabry 19 pts, Thomas Losito 11 pts, 5 assists and 3 steals. Shahee Martin had 12 pts while Horace McGloster chipped in 8 pts, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.' 7/23/05 Coach Joe Walsh: 'Long Island Lightning Walsh 16U competed this week in the Nationals down in New Orleans and did very well, going 7 and 1 overall capturing a 6th place finish. In what was a very tough pool, the Lightning opened up beating the Southern Mississippi Jackson Tigers 49-43. Andrew Beinert led the way with 14 points, Nick Walsh had 10 points. In Game 2 against the Arkansas Wings Cooper the Lightning prevailed 55-50 on the fine inside play of Andrew Gabriel and Markeys Deans. The Lightning sealed the game on clutch free throw shooting by Michael Sands making 3 out of 4 in the final minute and also added a break-away lay up. Game 3 against Team Texas was a battle from start to finish. With the Lightning giving up a 6 point lead in the final minute and half. Only to prevail on a coast to coast lay up by Andrew Beinert at the buzzer. James Wilson also had major contributions knocking down three 3's. Also fine all around play by Edil Lacayo, Richard Schmidt and Morgan Kelly. In the second round out of pool play the Lightning went up against the Georgia Stars and what I felt was the best game of the tournament. Opening the game with an array of three point shots by Nick Walsh and Markeys Deans. The Lightning took a 19 to 5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Stars closed the gap to within 1 point at the end of the third quarter. The Stars then led by 5 points with a minute and 14 seconds to go. The Lightning got a key 3 point play inside by Andrew Gabriel to cut it to 2 points. The Lightning got a stop and went inside to Markeys Dean to tie the score at 44-44 with 30 seconds to go. On the next possesion James Wilson came up with a key steal and the Lightning held for one shot with Wilson hitting Walsh with the skip pass and Nick Walsh dropping an 18 footer at the buzzer to give the Lightning a 47-44 win. In the next game we came out flat. Lost 73-62 to the Maryland Panthers. Moving into the 6th Place brackets the Lightning knocked off the Central Jersey Hawks 59-45. Illinios Rising Stars (featuring Jeffrey Jordan) 51-45. And in the 6th Place Championship Game Lightning beat Maryland Fighting Irish 54-43 on strong performances by Andrew Beinert, Edil Lacayo, Andrew Gabriel and Markeys Deans. The strength of this team in this tournament was the willingness to share the basketball and tremendous team defense. Also, contributing was Vincent Natal and Fred Dorgler and helping out the coaching staff was the injured TJ Carey. I would just like to thank all the support we got from the parents and program director Rosemary Nies. The AAU put on a tremendous show.' 7/22/05 Weekend 6 schedule is on the UDC, 2005 page. 7/22/05 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): Week 2 at our basketball development camp, this camp has got to be one of our best camps. All the campers respond so well to each drill and command. On Thursday we had the pleasure of having Sean Watson and Max Menard stop by and give the young players some encouraging words about their future. Max and Sean came over to me after lunch and said coach take a break. We will conduct a scrimmage between your older players. They divided the group into two teams and started a game. It was great, they made it very competitive. I felt these young men some day just might become coaches. They certainly were great students of the game themselves. Our day ended by traveling to Hunter College with 25 young players to play in between the pro games. It was so exciting for our players, they got a chance to see the pro players up close and take pictures with Speedy Claxton, Omar Cook. I want to thank Ray Diaz and Nike for having our program participate in the Nike Pro City program. 7/22/05 Booksnball: 'Insightful, truthful, fair & to the point comments by Robert Cates about most kids not working on turning their weaknesses into strengths and improving their overall games during the summer. It made me think back only five summers ago when a young man from Mount Vernon H. S. who had been a two time participant at ABCD and member of a NY State Champion team took some criticism and had people questioning his progress for turning his back on the "summer AAU circuit" and not traveling with his usual summer team ( I think Riverside) because he wanted to just work on his game and improve his skills. The young man? College All American, member of a National Championship team at UConn- number three 2004 lottery pick and the 2005 NBA 6th man award winner- Ben Gordon. Seems that his "working on his game" paid off.' 7/22/05 Hoop Scoop top 60 players list regardless of class includes eight from our region -- fourth team - PF Derrick Caracter 6'9 Sr Elizabeth St. Patrick NJ, seventh team -- C Brian Zoubek 7'0 Sr Haddonfield Memorial NJ Duke, eighth team - PF Lance Thomas 6'8 Sr Newark St. Benedict's NJ, tenth team -- PF Curtis Kelly 6'9 Sr New York Rice NY Connecticut, WF Earl Clark 6'8 Sr Rahway Rahway NJ, eleventh team -- 2G Melquan Bolding 6'4 Jr Beacon Beacon NY and 2G Corey Stokes 6'5 Jr Newark St. Benedict's NJ and twelfth team - PG Erving Walker 5'6 Soph Middle Village Christ the King NY. 7/21/05 John P Miciotta: Team and player analysis on the Super Hoop Jam Fest, 2005 page. 7/21/05 Coach Glen Steinberg: T'he NY Warriors were up in Scranton last weekend playing in the Shootout tournament. We played up a year in age and placed second in the tournament losing to Hoop City in the finals by one point. Our leading scorer was Colin Field. Joey Wood and Jason Desimone did especially well playing years up. We will be going to Utica in a couple weeks for another tournament.' 7/21/05 Robert Cates: 'A lot of kids are not taking the time out in the summer to work on their games. These kids are playing in so many tournaments through out the summer that it makes it very difficult. This is where the conflict with a lot of the AAU coaches and college coaches begin. For example, If you're 6' 5" and very strong, chances are you have been backing your opponent in and playing with your back to the basket. Although you have been putting up good numbers a college coach who came to see you play needs to know can you play facing the basket and how well can you put the ball on the floor. So he tells your AAU coach to work with you on this. This is not a knock on any AAU coach but because his job is to win first and teach second. You are left wondering how ready you are for the next level. You have to ask yourself, I played in a bunch of tournaments this summer and traveled all over. But did I get better? Remember being in great shape at the end of the summer is completely different from getting better. What good is it if your coach keeps telling you to work on one thing, but has you doing something else come game time.' 7/21/05 Jersey Journal: Holland and Hoboken battle it out in youth hoops action. 7/20/05 Coach Ron Dennis K.Y.D.A. ' I am reaching out to coaches from the NCAA Div II, NCAA Div III and the NJCAA level because I would not like to see any of my kids left behind. The following student athletes are still looking for schools and would be able to help just about any program that can use their skills. 1) Richard Jean-Baptiste 6' 4" of 2005 C.H.S.A.A. Class A City Champion St John Prep H.S. can handle the ball and shoot. Richard played in many big games at SJP (3x City Champs, once runner-up in junior year). Tough kid, tough competitor 2) Shane Denully 5' 8" P.G. of Our Saviour Lutheran H.S. Not many point guards can fill-out a resume identical to Shane. This year alone Shane played against major competition and performed well vs Mt Zion Prep, Oak Hill Academy, St Raymond H.S. Rice H.S. and Christ The KIng. Shane can see the floor, shoot from deep and is a strong on ball defender. One of the best in the city. 3) Benjamin Bowman 6' 3" S.G. and leading scorer for Cardinal Spellman H.S. Ben is a very good all around player. 4) Terrell Armstead 6' 3" Jason Plenty 5' 8" P.G. & from Martin Van-Buren H.S. Jason, a top performer in the PSAL and all Queens. Both need Junior Colleges. 5) Anthony Soares 6' 2" From Martin Van-Buren Athletic and a scorer. It was a great experience for the kids to compete against teams from other parts of the country. In pool play we faced the Arkansas Wings, Houston Hoops, and the Metroplex. Arkansas Wings was the toughest opponent inside of pool play. The Wings established themselves inside with three 6'3 forwards and Dingle's only 6'0 Derek Moten. Dingle's two other big man 6'1 Ousman Barry (attending special academic program) and 6'2 Jonathan Flores (new to the team). The Wings took the Dingle team overtime before Dingle pulled out a 65-64 overtime victory. Ali Barry (12pts and 21 reb) and Sterling Gibbs (18 pts and 8 assists) led the Dingle team. The Lightning Dingle Team defeated the Houston Hoops program 69-54, who just came back from a tourney in Spain. Houston Hoops is a national Nike team who is invited to their Kingwood Classic next April. The last game was versus the Metroplex, one the top teams in Texas. We overcame 12 point defecit and the one Texas referee called three technical fouls on the Dingle Team. Leading the way was Nicholas Padgett (10 points 3 stls), Emmanuel Brown ( 12 pts 17 reb) and Kareem McCanty (14 pts 12 reb). The Dingle dame back to win 62-54. The playoffs were a double elimination tourney. In the first playoff game we defeated the Houston Dream team. In the second round we had a rematch with the Arkansas Wings in which we defeated them by twelve points. In the third round Dingle defeated a team from Louisiana. In the semi finals the Dingle team faced Pro Skills from Dallas with a big kid about 6'3 who could everything. We congratulate Team Next and the Playaz for their placement in D1 and look forward to joining them in Disney next year as a result of our automatic bid. Congratulations also to LILightniong, the NJ Panthers, JS Lightning, the Heights, and NJ Tornadoes on fine performances. The Hawks started the week with a comeback victory over Roundball One (SCal) and then swept their remaining pool games. An exciting double-overtime victory over Garner Road (NCarolina) put the Hawks in the semis where they coasted past a taller but less athletic St Louis Metro Jets team. Brandyn Curry was his usual unstoppable self, hitting 3 foul shots in the last second vs. Garner Road to send it into OT. Brandyn triple-doubled all week long. Chris Jetter and Matt Rista performed at high levels all week and Blake Bascom's defense was suffocating in the half-court trap. Patrick O"Boyle's poise and defense kept us in it while Matt (Doc) Davis overcame his lack of size to control the boards. Tom Baumlin, the McGuckin boys, Mike Kelly and Jay Lester battled hard. We had a great week and we salute the Panthers for being the greatest fans in Memphis!' 7/11/05 Elliot Rosado: 'On Friday July 8th i had the pleasure of taking my 11 year olds up to the Reebok ABCD Camp. Needless to say they had a great time. The highlight of their trip was when they got to meet Sonny Vaccaro himself. He took the time out to speak to the kids. I told him I brought the kids in hopes that they will make it a goal to earn their way to the camp one day. It was great to get back to the gym that same day and see the kids run up and down the court yelling, I'm Corey Fisher, I''m O.J Mayo. The kids look foward to coming back next year.' 7/11/05 Coach Eric 'Rock' Eisenberg: 'I wanted to give a "Shout Out" to Paul Robeson star, Malcolm Grant for saying in Sundays New York Post what most of us in the "New" PSAL feel. I, like Malcolm, believe that more than two of our student/athletes should have or could have been invited to the ABCD Camp. I realize that there are a lot of very talented players around the country but not to invite Canarsie High School star Nathaniel Lester and a few other of our deserving players sends a message to the coaches and the players of the PSAL that we do not matter! While I am sure that is not the case it does make you think just a "little bit" . Over the last 10 or so years my former players and I have benefited from the great program that Sonny Vaccaro put together at this top flight camp perhaps, I am just a little sad that this year more of our kids did not get a chance to shine in this big time setting. The ALLSTARS are 2-0.' 7/9/05 Coach Eric 'Rock' Eisenberg: 'I wanted to take this chance to thank the Daily News reporters Kristie Ackert, Julian Garcia and my man, Roger Rubin, for writing a nice piece on former Tilden star "Big" Phil Jones. Phil is a wonderful young man who has matured over the past two years. In the big guy's senior year at Tilden he helped us to upset wins over Wings Academy and Frederick Douglass Academy, two fine, well coached teams who we we were lucky enough to beat. We got to the Elite Eight and got whacked by a tough Grady team at St. Johns ending our Cinderella season. I really believe that Phil Jones will turn out to be a super college player a lot of the credit for his early development must go to former Tilden Coach Jeff Schrier who worked with Phil early in his basketball life and helped him get started his way to where he is today!' 7/9/05 Coach Kevin Brown: 'We have compiled a list of all of the NY and NJ kids attending the Reebok ABCD camp this week. Based on our observations over the last several years there are five common denominators among those who earn a Division 1 basketball scholarship: (1) high school team exposure/success, (2) superior skill, size or athleticism, (3) AAU travel team participation, (4) sneaker, elite regional camp attendance and (5) academic success. We have seen a player missing one of these elements win a scholarship but rarely have we seen a player missing (2) go on to play at the next level (academic success is a non-negotiable piece to the puzzle). The players on this list are well on their way to earning a chance to play for free at the next level.' 7/9/05 Bruce Bishop: 'My Developmental Basketball Camp, Inc is registering for basketball camp for the month of August, boys and girls ages 8-17. Thanks for supporting the Brooklyn-Queens Warriors!' 7/5/05 Coach Paul Suber: 'Team Next 7th grade team just returned from the division 1 AAU National Championship in Memphis Tenn. There were 132 of the best 7th grade teams from around the country there. We went 8-1 over our 9 day stay in Memphis, beating 7 state champions (Seattle Rotary, N.C Gators, Youth Interlock, N.J Playaz, MD Select, Tulsa Bulldogs and the R&G Allstars from Detroit). Four of the seven state champs we beat placed in this year's Nationals. Unfortunatly our 1 loss (1st since November 3,2004), which cost us a chance at playing for the National Championship against the T.G. Adidas team (Texas), a team that we had beaten this year at the "Adidas showcase in California in April came against a very good "Team Memphis"club, that last year lost in the championship by 3 pts, We came out very flat in this morning game and had to play "catch-up basketball" which is not our style. Plus playing "Memphis in Memphis" didn't help either. We finished 5th in the country and our overall record for the year so far in 13 A.A.U Tournament is 61-1. So I am very pleased and proud of the hard work these young men have put in, and I pray that I stay healthy & strong enough to help them grow for years to come. Don't forget they are only 13&14 years old. The kids played hard, tough and smart and we will learn from this experience. It will make us harder to beat next time, because it sometimes takes a loss to learn. I would like to give a special thanks to all my guys and assistant coaches for the hard work and effort given towards this team so far this year. Joey Imuzai, Steve Whittingham, Da'Shaun "Day Day" Wiggins, Davonaty Grace, Jay Vaughn Pinkston, Aaron Brown, Paul Bilbo, Cory Edwards, Doron Lamb, Anthony "Face" Given, "Mrs.Shirley" Horton, Mike Moore Jr, Rah'me Martin-Anderson and Micheal Moore Sr, our team director. Thank you and remember it's not over yet, the summer just started. We will be going to the Main Event in Las Vegas, then a few camps, Mike Duncan's Phenom Camp in Ohio, Five Star at Fort Wayne P.A and they will be playing at the "Entertainers Basketball Classic" in N.Y.' 7/5/05 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): 'The FYA/SLAM Summer Basketball Tournament at Bildersee Park is going into it's third week. The games have been very exciting and competitive in all divisions 9U, 11U, 13U, 15U, 17U. We have seen some coaches from differrent levels of schools out to see a good brand of basketball. This past weekend gave me a big boost, seeing some of our young players in the past, coming into our tournament coaching young players from the Red Hook, and Gowanas areas, and doing a great job at it. Next we will be starting our 14th Annual Summer Basketball Development Camp at Saint Vincent Church on Monday July 11th to August 11th, Mondays to Thursdays 8am - 4pm the camp is for boys and girls ages 5 - 17. The win improved our record in Almighty Force to 9-0, next up is Hood Squad.' 7/5/05 Daily News: At ABCD, high hopes for players. 7/5/05 Sly Johnson, Manhasset Allstars: 'I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate some special individuals who "got it" when they were in the Manhasset Allstars basketball program. This is the majority of players that was on the undefeated IS8 team as a 12.U team. The class of 2005. Tyson Johnson -Monmouth, Kevin Vosilla -Rider, Kevin Dooley -Penn, Ray Rice -Syracuse, Rudy Fuertes -NYU Medical School, Rory Grady -Lasell College, and Joey Amelio - Stevens Institute of Technology. These young men are off to a good start at being productive citizens in life. They all saw beyond the court and used basketball as a "tool" to gain a higher education. I am constantly reading about kids reclassifying and go the "Prep Schools" to enhance their basketball skills. None of this is about being able to take care of their family five or six years down the road when they are no longer living with their parents. I appeal to all coaches, stop using these kids to keep your sneaker contracts and win trophies and be honest with them. Did you see the NBA Draft? There were some kids who "didn't get it" that will land on the streets. I have spoken to many college coaches and they do not want a 20 or 21 year old freshman in their school. I talk to people everyday who are worried about having money for their children's college education. How much they have to borrow, and will it be too expensive? Help convince these kids that a college degree from any school, D2 or D3 is better than nothing. If they have an offer, don't let them turn it away. I see hundreds of people come through our Human Resources office everyday. They need that degree. Measure and evaluate your program. How many kids did you send to college this year? How many did you reclassify? Are you going to help them once they can't help you anymore? Although the Manhasset Allstars is not a nationally ranked summer program, the seven kids listed above "got it" and that's what we are about.' 7/4/05 Daily News: H.S. hoopsters give their word -- Larry Davis to North Carolina State. 7/4/05 Results for week 3 are on the UDC, 2005 page. 7/4/05 Jimmy Salmon: 'The final pools and schedule for the 2005 Playaz Ball are now posted on www.playazbasketball.org.
