August, 2005 8/31/05 Roberto Diaz, NYC Finest - 'Derrick Warren, formerly at Grady HS, is currently attending Arlington High School, Tx.' 8/31/05 Mrs. Thomas: 'Darius Gabriel 6' 2 pg is at Winchedon Prep in Mass. He's class 2008 so come next month start having Darius Gabriel profile under class 2008 not 2007.' 8/31/05 John P Miciotta: 'According to several published reports three local players have made verbal commitments to attend colleges. Malcolm Grant, the smooth shooting guard who has been one of the PSAL's most potent scorers the last two years announced that he will sign a National Letter of Intent to play for Seton Hall University for the 2006-07 season. Grant, a 6' combo guard will provide scoring punch for coach Louis Orr's Pirates next season. While reports indicate it was his play at ABCD that piqued Seton Hall's interest, those who've seen him play at Robeson already knew how good he was. Congratulations to Malcolm, Coach Orr, to Robeson Coach Todd Myles who has maintained that school's winning tradition since taking over for Larry Major a few years ago. Chris Martin, the rugged guard who was a three year varsity player at Christ the King High School announced that he will play at Stony Brook University beginning in '06-'07 after spending this year at Maine Central Institute. Chris' defense and penetrating ability have made him a vital part of the Royals' success these past three years, and will make him a welcome addition to new coach Steve Pikell's program at Stony Brook. Martin joins another local player, 6'8" Rio Pit of Our Savior New American in helping coach Pikell add to the foundation built by retired coach Nick Macarchuck and insure that Stony Brook will be competitive at the Division I level. Finally, former Lawrence-Woodmere Academy point guard Jon Han has decided to play his college hoops at Fairfield University beginning this season ('05-'06) Han, who spent last season at Tilton (NH) Prep showed local fans his superb shooting and passing skill at Pete Edwards' great proving ground at IS8. At Fairfield he will team with another fine shooter, former Loughlin standout Herbie Allen, and they should form a tandem that will be tough for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to handle. Jon is a great get for Fairfield Coach Tim O'Toole and his staff, which includes former St. Patrick's (NJ) and Fordham star Jerry Hobbie and long-time All Hallows mentor John Carey. We at High Hoops have enjoyed watching and getting to know each of these kids and wish them success in their efforts both on the court, and most of all in the classroom.' 8/31/05 Jersey Journal: Mean Machine, Mavericks lock up divisional titles. 8/31/05 This weekend's playoff results and the championship time are on the Conrad McRae, 2005 page. 8/31/05 Roberto Diaz, NYC Finest - 'I want to take the time to commend our following student athletes on their high school accomplishments as well as wish them the best of luck in their new career paths in college. We enjoyed our experience with Team Next and it was the best decision to make for Joshua. He learned what truly competitive basketball feels like and what it will take to make it to the next level. Through my past experiences with coaches I find that some of them know the game, but a lot of them have no people skills. Kamani was one of the exceptions. Bright, articulate and considerate of others, this man is a future coaching star. In my line of work (Director of Patient Accounts at NYU) I meet a lot of people. Kamani's interpersonal skills are superior and that makes a difference! To Kamani Young, Paul Sober and Mike all the best from Joshua and me. Kamani thanks for the ride, see you in the paint! 8/26/05 This Saturday's playoff schedule is on the Conrad McRae, 2005 page. 8/26/05 NJO: Derrick Caracter bonds with Louisville. This was after beating a very tough Long Island team who beat Team Next in the Quarterfinals. The victory was gratifying due to the fact that our Big Fella Pape Konteye has not been available this summer due to an injury and family commitment. This summer we saw a coming out party for Peter Aguilar and Christopher Beard as they both showed their Versatility with their inside and outside play often causing mismatch problems for other teams. We also saw strong guard play from Jordan Aaron, Jeffrey Mack and Fredrick Curtis. Although we Lost our semi-final game in UDC to the eventual winner Long Island Lighting Dingle by one point. We ended the summer season with a 35 1 record.' 8/25/05 Basketball Beat Super 25 Underclassmen includes # 5. Lance Stephenson, 6-4, 195 pounds, PG, Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, NY), Class of 2009. Stephenson is a very talented freshman-to-be. He has good size and length. He drives strong to the basket. Stephenson has good court vision and is a great passer. He is also a good defender and rebounder. # 10. Tyreke Evans, 6-4, 185 pounds, SG, American Christian Academy (Aston, PA), Class of 2008. Evans is a big-time scorer who is a great shooter and is dangerous from three-point land. He can create his own plays and shots. He can also handle the ball well, and some think he could be a future point guard. Evans is very athletic and works hard on top of having so much natural ability. # 16. Corey Stokes, 6-5, 185 pounds, SG, St. Benedict Prep (Newark, NJ), Class of 2007. Stokes is a great athlete and a strong finisher. He has a great shot which includes a great three-point shot. He needs to continue to improve his mid-range game and his rebounding. Stokes is being recruited by Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, Rutgers, Villanova, Wake Forest, Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky, and Seton Hall. # 20. Erving Walker, 5-6, 140 pounds, PG, Christ the King Regional HS (Middle Village, NY), Class of 2008. Walker may not even be as tall as hes listed. But that doesnt matter, he can play. He handles the ball well, and he can shoot. He has a great three-point shot, and has range even beyond the three-point line. Colleges should give this guy a look, even if they arent impressed with his size. 8/25/05 Coach Bernstein - 'College Coaches please note: Suffolk County Boys' Basketball - Important Showcase dates of interest: 2005 Suffolk County Basketball Coaches Academy at Center Moriches High School (9/24-25); Sixth Annual Suffolk Doubleheader Challenge at St. Joseph's College (Patchogue) (9/28 - 7 and 9 p.m.); Sixth Annual Suffolk vs. Nassau Coaches for a Cause All-Star Game at Stony Brook University (10/10 - 7 p.m.); annual Election Day Coaches Clinic at TBD (11/8). Lightning- Dingle was led by their MVP Manny Brown and their point guard, Sterling Gibbs. In St. Albans Queens at the Springfield Rifles Invitational the host team 13U team took on the Lightning-Fisher team in the Championship. EBC Tournament - The Team Next 13& under team won the EBC (Entertainer's Basketball Classic) basketball 14& under championship at Rucker Park with a win over Steve's AllStars 66-48. Steve Whittingham was M.V.P. It was a beautiful and well organized tournament hosted by Al Cash and Greg Marius. The team went 5-0 and played very competitive game against some older players because we were the youngest team in the tourney 'playing up' (yes, we will be back next year). Team Next is now 83-1 with our only loss coming in Memphis, Tenn. at the Nationals this year. I have coached against some of the business top coaches, coached against some great talent. I have enjoyed every minute thus far. I would also like to thank every player that I have coached over the years, through these young athletes I was taught patience, determination, honesty, loyalty, and most of all respect. I have seen over 25 kids who I have coached move onto college careers over the last 5 years, and that brings joy to my heart. Starrett was led by what might be the best backcourt in the 14 & U division in NYC. Chaz Williams & Devon "Fatty " MacMillan were simply too much for Team Odom. Also, the three guard offense just sealed the game with Isaiah Morton constantly pounding the ball and his defense. James Padgett & Javier Novell kept Team Odom's big men out of the game by controlling the boards. What the rest of the team did to complement the fab five was too much for Team Odom to overcome. Hopefully, Starrett City and Team Odom will match up again in the championship game at Ron Artest. If this should be the case I promise that it will be an event basketball fans will appreciate.' 8/22/05 Coach Mark Evans: 'My team, Get It And Go 13 and under took the Gun Hill Basketball Classic tournament with a win by 2 over Kips Bay. Fisher: 'The Long Island Lightning often criticized for its inability to compete on a national level but more important in the five boroughs of NYC. The Lightning Dingle and Fisher team to name a few have done all they can to prove the critics wrong. The Lightning-Fisher team competitive in the Dyckman Basketball Tournament finishing with a 4-3 record after a sluggish start upon retuning from the Nationals in Memphis, TN. They stepped it up a notch in the playoffs they had 25 point victory in the quarterfinals over a I.S.59 team 50-25, which is led by their 6-5 center Roland Brown, who the Lightning team is very familiar with. In the semifinals, they faced a bigger challenge the JYO (Jamaica Youth Organization) Warhogs the tournament favorite in the 13U division, a team that featured some the best 6th, 7th and 8th grade player in southern Queens and a team they lost to by 1 point in double overtime. This will have a profound affect on grassroots hoops throughout the nation. Will high school and summer league sponsorships expand or be cut back? Will shoe contracts with NBA stars plummet because of less corporate competition? And most importantly to the local high school hoops community - will ABCD be sponsored by adidas or will it become the newly named #1 Camp known as ABCD/ B.Y.O. S. (Bring your Own Sneakers)? Or will it simply follow the scenario of last years Nike purchase of Converse, where Nike took over Converse, but the brands remained the same? Will there still be two camps and rival camps for the younger kids-like Camp Next? I'm sure the boardrooms of both companies are very active today. Stay tuned & read the details here. 8/3/05 Philly.com: Players aren't waiting till senior year to pick their colleges. 8/3/05 Vinny Kabus: ':I would like to add that "Doc" Nicelli's Student Athletes Broncos also had a very sucessful showing in Vegas making their overall combined record at 6 and 1 between Vegas and California . Adam Waker played exceptionally well combining up front with Phil Jones who also made a strong showing . It should be also noted that Charles Jenkins from Springfield HS also played extremely well . Charles, a rising senior, may be NYC's public school's "Best kept secret" and might very well be one of the best. For those who don't know, Charles is a very strong 6'2 combo guard very deceptive quickness and ballhandling skills. But even more amazing is that Charles is only 16 and will not be 17 until Feb of 2006 .Just someone to look out for next year.' 8/2/05 Antonio Cannon, Sr: 'The T.K. Allstars have completed 3 of their 6 summer league regular season schedules. The team went 5-2 at West 4th Street, and open the playoffs next Monday against B & D Players 4:30pm. At Youngworld the team is 3-0, with two games left on the regular season schedule. The team is starting to show some wear and tear as a result of this grueling summer schedule. I hope and pray their work ethic on the courts will carry over to their studies for a successful upcoming academic school year for them all. They are a great bunch and I enjoyed spending my summer with them.' 8/2/05 Coach Bob Larson: 'The Student-Atletes Broncos returned from their west coast trip this weekend, completing their efforts by going 2-0 in the Adidas Best of the Summer tournament in Los Angeles. But what really caught my attention was the sportsmanship of the NYC Panthers' parents on the side. At a time when the tension was really high one of the Dyckman players fouled out The parents on the side stood up and applauded and yelled out good game and way to play hard in support of a kid on the opposing team. In a time where parents get a bad rap for behavior during games I would like to applaud the parents on the NYC Panthers for their sportsmanship and support of all kids on both there team and the opponent.
