12/31/06 PressConnects: Boys & Girls claims crown. Kangaroos withstand Greene-led rally by Owls.

12/31/06 Dwayne "Coach D" Murray, Varsity Asst. Coach: 'The Mt. Vernon Knights traveled to Charlotte, NC to play in the Dell Curry Bojangles Shootout. On Thursday night, the Knights faced a confident Sagemont (FL) HS squad that had just defeated Edwin Rios (U of MIAMI) and Miami Senior HS in a South Florida Holiday Tournament. It was a tough game, along with the fact that Mike Coburn was sick, and the Knights found themselves down for the majority of the second half, until less than a minute left in the game and Sherrod Wright scored the winning basket to beat Sagemont 58-57. Kevin Jones had 15pts, 21 rebounds in that game.

In the second game, the Knights faced Grant Hill's alma mater, South Lakes (VA) HS. After leading by 5 at the half, the Knights full court defense took over, which lead to an 84-49 victory. Mike Coburn sizzled from the 3pt line, hitting 4 shots from behind the arc, and ended up with 28 points. Sherrod Wright had 16. The Knights got great contribution from Jordan Lessane, Marcquis Abney and O'dayne Clark.

In the championship game, the Knights faced Freedom (VA) HS for the Shootout Championship. The Freedom Eagles, who defeated a very good Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy team to get to the championship game, feature a player named Cameron Long who is the best kept secret on the East Coast. George Mason got a steal when he committed to them early. But right from the start, the Knights were playing their game leading at the half by 12. The Knights pressured the ball full court the whole game, and Freedom wasn't ready for that Mt. Vernon heat, and the Knights won the game, and the Bojangles Shootout Championship 60-52. The game was never in doubt in the second half, as Mike Coburn and Kevin Jones powered the team to a dominant win. Coburn was selected to the All-Tournament team, and Kevin Jones was named Tournament MVP with a dominating performance, 27 points, 20 rebounds and 8 blocks. Kevin continues to make his case for why he should be considered among the very best juniors in the country.

The Knights will play Slam Dunk Challenge Champions White Plains HS on Jan 12 at Mt. Vernon HS. Then the Knights travel to Massachusetts on Martin Luther King weekend to play against top ten team Norcross (GA) HS at the Basketball Hall of Fame Tournament. So it doesn't get easier. The way it should be.'

12/31/06 Roberto Diaz, Assistant - John Bowne HS 'On Saturday, the 2nd Annual Queens Jam Christmas Classic took place, and the following were the final results: Cathedral Prep - 43 (Most Valuable Player #5 Anthony George) vs Richmond Hill - 24 (Most Outstanding Player #5 Malik Batine), Newtown - 58 (MVP #3 Isiah Lee) vs Environmental Studies - 44 (MOP #32 Elvis Hernandez), L.I.C. - 65 (MVP Kresimi Knez) vs Brandeis - 35 (MOP #15 Matthew Thomas) & Bowne - 85 (MVP #12 Michael Bruce) vs Flushing - 74 (MOP #15 Darin Marshall). Thanks to all participating teams, coaches, the sponsors, media outlets, scouting outlets, fans and families that came out to support the event making it a great holiday weekend.'

12/31/06 Willie Negron: '7th Annual Holiday Mett Classic from Proviednce RhodeIsland.On Thursay Dec 29 Monroe Campus lost to Feinstein H.S last year's state champ 52-47. Feinstein was led by junior forward Jerrell Gomez 23 points. Monroe Campus was led by junior Marcus Razor with 19 points and his teammate junior guard Stanley Brooks chipped in 17 points. On the last game of 2006 the Monroe Campus Eagles came from behind and beat Central H.S. 55-46. They were trailing by 10 points in the first 8 minutes of the game 14-4. The last 4.27 of half the Eagles were flying high behind the shooting of senior guard Marvin Raimez and Stanley Brooks hitting back to back threes to cut Cental Lead to one 16-15. The second half was all Monroe as Stanley Brooks finished with 19 points and got help from junior forward Alexander White who chipped in 11 points.'

12/31/06 Coach JR Rembert: 'NY Skyriders 7th grade finished the Metro Hoops Holiday Classic Tournament going a perfect 4-0 and took home the tournament championship. 2 of the 4 wins came against the highly talented New Heights 7th Grade team. Both games came down to the wire and displayed of what some say will be future of NY basketball. In the championship game Dashawn Suber proved to be Mr. Clutch when he hit a 3 with 15 seconds left to give New Heights the 1 point lead. Lebrent Walker broke thru a double team went the full length of the court and hit the go ahead layup and we won. The game was exciting start to finish. Jameik Riviere was Tournament M.V.P. with 21 points in the championship game, providing clutch shooting and timely 3 pointers all throughout the game. I would like to say congratulations to all my players: Lebrent Walker, Jameik Riviere, Dontay Payne, Yuri Wright, Jevon Thomas, George Davis, Shamik Mingo, Charles Rembert, Lloyd Wheeler, Travis Flagg and Maurice Harkless.'

12/30/06 NJO: 'St. Benedict's 69 (10-0-0), Taft 43 (0-0-0). Corey Stokes had 16 points to lead a balanced attack for St. Benedict's (10-0) against the California school in the championship game of the GlaxoSmithKline Invitational in Raleigh, N.C. Samardo Samuels (15 points), Zach Rosen (14) and Tamir Jackson (13) also scored in double figures for St. Benedict's, which closed the first half with a 26-0 run to take a 43-15 lead into intermission.'

NJO: 'Seton Hall Prep 59 (5-0-0), Dunwoody (Ga.) 57 (12-2-0). Alan Buzbee hit a buzzer-beating layup off a pass by Jimmy Burke to lift Seton Hall Prep in the semifinal of the Piggly Wiggly Roundball Classic in Charleston, S.C. Burke made a steal just one second after Seton Hall lost the ball on a steal. Ashton Gibbs scored 18 points for Seton Hall, 11 in the first half to spur a 34-23 lead. Ralph Jones grabbed nine rebounds in the victory. Seton Hall plays tonight against the winner of Christian Brothers of Lincroft and Rufus King of Milwaukee.'

12/30/06 Rudy King: 'The Loughlin Lions (CHSAA "AA" / Brooklyn, NY) advanced to the championship game (Capr Fear Division) in the Bay Ball Classic Invitational in Milford, Delaware last night by defeating championship favorite Oklahoma Christian by 11 points in the semi-final match-up. The night before the Lions came from behind to defeat Sanford H.S. of Delaware (47-48) after trailing the entire game. In game one vs. Sanford HS, 6'9" (Jr.) Danny Jennings had a strong game snatching 12 boards, rejecting 5 shots, and contributing 4 points. 6'1 (Jr.) Devon Elliott dropped 13 points, and grabbed 12 boards. 6'2" (Sr.) Shavar "Radar" Richardson had a smooth 14 points and 6'3" (Fr.) Doron "Day-Day" Lamb chipped in 10 points. In game two the semi-final match-up versus Oklahoma Christian, the Lions went up against national top 30 player, 6'9" (Sr.) Blake Griffin (35pts. / 22 rebounds) but prevailed 74-63. 6'0" junior James Johnson worked out netting 20 points, Shavar "Radar" Richardson had another solid long range game connecting on 19 points and Devon Elliott yet again proved he is a beast contributing a solid 17 points and 9 boards. The Loughlin Lions now stand at 4-3.

Head Coach Khalid Green said, 'We have a lot of talent in the building but now it's about getting the talent to understand each others skills and communicate with each other and step up our overall team defense to maxiumize this strong opportunity we have. It's been an adjustment but at the end of the day, we will make it work and will be there at the end.'

12/30/06 Coach Oliver Antigua: 'St. Raymond defeated Midlle Creek NC, 62-52 in the Glaxo Holiday Invitational  in Raleigh, NC. Four players led a balanced attack - Gerald Colds 16, Darion benbow 14 Lenny Mcneil 12, Darryl Bryant 10. St. Rays is now 7-0.'

They also got help from senior forward Chris Bulter and sophomore guard Sean Cruz with 10 points apiece. Mount Hope senior guard Shawn Hill had 27 points in the 7th Annual Harold Metts Holiday Basketball Classic.'

12/30/06 Syracuse Post Standard: CBA Holiday Classic: -- Archbishop Molloy from New York City, coached by Jack Curran, the winningest coach in state history, got past host CBA 75-63 in the other semifinal. Curran entered the season with 873 career wins.

12/30/06 Greg Tejada: 'The P.D. Bronx Kings defeated the Lloyd Daniels Rebels in the championship 4th grade 10 and under division The Kings were led by Omari Brown who put in 12 pts 5 assist and 6 rebounds.Defensively the Bronx Kings were led by Daraja Rodwell a shut down defender who came up with the game winning steal against New Jersey's Team Elite to get to the finals. Efrain Macho Dejesus also contributed 6 pts 5 boards hitting the game winning buzzer beater. Bronx Kings third grade phenom Ben Rabinowitz chiped in 7 pts 2 steals.'

Jeff Noel (6'5" - 3) is averaging 20 ppg and 7 rpg while leading Acorn to a 7 - 1 record. Robert Gutierrez (6' - PG) is helping Coach Pittman's John Adams team to a 8 - 1 overall record. Robert is averaging 15 ppg and 6 apg. Gerald Hollaway is only 5'3", but he is almost averaging a triple double (12 ppg, 9 rpg & 11 apg) for Bushwick Campus. Bushwick Campus has a 7 - 1 record. Brian Mero (Grover Cleveland), Marek Chmielowiec (Martin Luther King) and Marlon Morgan (Wadleigh) are making positive contributions to their respective teams. I would also like to mention 3 of my former players. Michael Dziewit and Przemek Kudla (St. Joseph's College - Brooklyn) and Nelson Gedeon (SUNY Potsdam) are having solid seasons on the court this year.'

Laurinburg was upset by Philly Lutheren for the chip. Playing well and earning All-Tourney honors for Laurinburg was former Port Chester star, Melvin Calhoun, who dropped in 19 points and dished out 7 assists. 12/19/06 Kimani Young, Athletic Director: 'The New Heights 8th Grade Blue Team travelled to California this past weekend to compete in the annual Kenny "The Jet" Smith Holiday Classic held at the Anaheim Sports Arena. New Heights 8th Grade Blue successfully went 6-0 while capturing the Gold Championship out of a field of 18 teams in the 8th grade division. The 3 guard lineup of Corey Edwards, Sterling Gibbs and Isaiah Morton proved to be too much for the opposition both offensively and defensively. Jermaine Sanders once again showed why he is one of the most improved players in the country by consistently knocking down the open jumpshot and finishing in traffic over bigger opponents, Nicholas Lamont provided solid defense and rebounding while New Heights 8th Grade Blue got productive contributions off the bench from Miles Davis, Emmanuel Andujar and Shamell Williams. Congratulations to New Heights 8th Grade Blue Team.

He also added seven rebounds and was named tournament MVP. Alex Aurichio added nine points and 13 rebounds for HHHW.

12/16/06 Coach Eric "Rock" Eisenberg: 'I wanted to praise Coach John Sce and his never say die New Utrecht H. S. basketball team. On Friday December 15th we traveled to play New Utrecht and as always we expected a tight game. Led by Ashton Pascall 20 points, Javon Jackman 16 points and 10 assists and Nigel Francis 6 points and 18 boards we led 38-15 at the half. My assistant Howard Hughes and I told our team this game is not over! Well, we were right as New Utrecht came roaring back and closed to within 5 points before we regained our poise in the last three minutes and closed out the game 62-54. The lesson I hope our team learned yesterday was, never count out a highly motivated well coached team!'

12/14/06 Coach Darryl Jones: 'The HS For Math, Science, & Engineering Dragons pulled out a tough over time win against division rival Martin Luther King HS by a score of 50-46. The Dragons got big time play from their big men. Antonio Upia finished with points 9 rebounds and 8 assist and Sam Porte had a monster game with 22 points and 19 rebounds. Jose Dilone hit a clutch 3 pointer to send the game in overtime. Also Max Tiero finished with 15 points.'

Although attending school up north, Asenso is a resident of NYC, NY. Asenso is a 6'6 235lb combo forward, who can face up and shoot from 3 point range as well as play as a post up player. His best assets are his tremendous power and athletic ability. He was rated the top player at Eastern Invitational Camp in July. Asenso was a player who was receiving interest and offers on all levels, but knew early on that he wanted to attend an Ivy league school. I can also attest to the fact Asenso is one of the hardest working players I have ever met. He has a body like a comicbook superhero. He is the latest NY area player to commit to Columbia following Niko Scott and Pat Foley (who are both off to tremendous starts for Columbia). Also joining Asenso is Zach Crimmins a 6'11 big man out of VA. Coach Joe Jones and staff have done a tremendous job recruiting some of the best players in the NYC area. The Old School team defeated P.S.327 Wizards by the score of 39 - 25 in the 13 and under division. Old School handled the Wizards with care, knowing they will have some tough opponents in the next game. They have to beat The Rockets, and The Skyriders for the championship next Tuesday 12/12. In the 17 and under division The Rosedale Blazers made a brilliant come from behind victory, to defeat a depleted FYA team, which played their hearts out, for the championship. It was a great team effort.'

12/6/06 Vinny Kabus: 'In a city lacking in quality big men, there may be one exception, and that would be Kresimi Knez. Knez is a 6'8 230lb senior from LIC HS. Knez is a naturally strong bigman with soft hands including a good left. Rebounding and footwork near the basket seem to be his best assets. In his last game against Bryant HS, Kresimi netted 35 points with 22 boards. He has already qualified academically with a 1160 (old score) on his SATs and is definitely a player worth watching this season.'

12/3/06 Sports Illustrated's Preseason Top 25 includes # 8. St. Benedict's Prep, Newark (29-2). The Gray Bees won their fourth Prep A title last season in Dan Hurley's five years as coach. Despite losing three top players -- Lance Thomas (Duke), David Cubillan (Marquette) and Eugene Harvey (Seton Hall) -- St. Benedict's is still loaded, led by senior guard Corey Stokes (Villanova).  # 9. St. Patrick, Elizabeth, N.J. (29-4). Coach Kevin Boyle has one of the nation's top players in senior point guard Corey Fisher (Villanova), who averaged 16 points last year. Senior forward Jeff Robinson (Memphis) averaged 13.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists. # 14. Christ the King, Middle Village, N.Y. (25-5). The Royals aren't big, but they are talented. They're led by the backcourt of senior Malik Boothe (St. John's) and junior Erving Walker, both of whom are 5-8. # 18. Lincoln, Brooklyn (29-4). With combo sophomore guard Lance Stephenson, who averaged 19.5 points last year, back, the Railsplitters should challenge for a state title. # 25. Mount Vernon, (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) (23-5). The Knights won the Class AA Federation state title last year, but they must replace star forward Jonathan Mitchell, who averaged 19.5 points and 7.6 rebounds last year and is now at Florida. 12/2/06 Kent Culuko: 'The International Youth Basketball (IYB) 2006 Fall League Tournament wrapped up Monday November 27, in grand style. In the boys 8th-9th grade division championship game, St. Joe's of Spring Valley, NY beat the Bergen County All-Stars , NJ 62-50. St. Joe's eighth grade phenom Tavon Sledge was awesome, scoring 45 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Sledge showed all facets of his game, knocking down threes, creating off the dribble and pulling up for mid range jumpers and finishing strong to the cup. 12/1/06 Sean Atkins: 'On December 15th and 16th The Boys’ Club of New York (BCNY) will host one of the largest Prep School Basketball Tournaments in the country. This two-day tournament will take place at Fordham University ’s Rose Hill Campus, located in the Bronx . Sixteen teams from schools in Connecticut , Maine , Massachusetts , Illinois , Pennsylvania , New Jersey and New York will gather for two-days of competitive play. The teams are divided into two divisions with each team playing a minimum of three games.

This year the BCNY Holiday Classic will showcase some of the most talented young men in Prep basketball who hope to follow in the footsteps of the players mentioned above. The Eastern Division will include Mike Beasley (Kansas State) of Notre Dame Prep, who is regarded as one of the 5 best prep players in the country; he will be joined by teammates Jamine (Greedy) Peterson and Johnny Higgins; Blair Academy boasts a high major front court of Alexis Wagamene (Texas) and Patrick Hazel (Marquette) as well as, Canisius signee Julius Coles; Lawrenceville Schools Porter Braswell (Yale) and, Worcester’s Quasim Pugh will be some of the stronger guards in the event; The Boys’ Club of New York’s backcourt of Kevin White, Scotty Draughon, and Lanval Gordon will be a force as well; Northfield Mount Hermon’s local premiere players will include twins Jerrell and Terrell Williams (LaSalle University) they will be joined by Tyrone Nash (Notre Dame), RJ Rutledge and Gary Corriea; St. Mark’s, the 3 time defending West Division champions, will move up to the stronger East Division with Sal Abdo (New Hampshire), Tommy Hubbard and high major sophomore Erik Murphy. The Western Division will feature senior Theo Jensen and junior Shasha Brown of Peddie, Michael Eric (Temple), senior Lewis Watkins of Hyde School, senior Kevin Decker (Brunswick), freshman Jason Morris, and senior Kenny Widgeon.
