Hoop News:

4/30/98     Recruiting Beat:  News on URI, Zach Marbury and Lamar Odom.

4/30/98    It's Xaverian day here at High Hoops.   Daily News has latest on senior, Joe Quinn.   Team section has Xaverian and Molloy profiles.  And Jay at AOL and John at erols give point, counterpoint evaluations of freshmen in players section.

4/29/98    Rich at AOL from down south:  'According to ... our Alumni Assn. chapter here in Birmingham on Saturday, Glover's visit has been postponed. Rick says that Arkansas has only one more visit to give and Nolan doesn't want to give that visit to Glover if he isn't going to qualify. The Hogs are still very much interested, but they are waiting to see if  he makes his test score. Rick also said that Nolan likes the chemistry of the bunch he has signed already and there is some concern about a "super star" (should we sign Glover) upsetting that chemistry. I don't know if that's just Rick's opinion or if he was voicing the opinion of the coaching staff..... Anyway, with all that in mind, I think it would be a long shot if we sign Glover.

4/29/98   Daily News:   Marbury Visits Minny.   Hoop Scoop:   'Red Storm is also making a late push for 6'8 Al Harrington from Elizabeth.'

4/28/98:   Hoop Scoop:  'We are now predicting that St. John's will get 6'5 Anthony Glover.'    InJersey:  St. Pat's coach:  'Al won't jump.'

4/27/98:    Mike DeCourcy at the Sporting News site is talking about: Ten unsigned players who could make an impact - including Harrington, Glover and Marbury.

4/27/98:    Follow-up to coach's all-star poll.  About Darris James on the first team:  'Molloy head coach Jack Curran felt "he was the best player in the league."'  Wow, if you say so coach!  We will get Darris on the junior list - soon.

4/27/98:     Newsday:  They know that not all of this site's hoops action is in Jamaica, Queens at IS8!

4/27/98:    CHSAA Brooklyn Queens all-stars based on a poll of the league's coaches.

4/26/98:    IS8 results:  Southside 100 - St. Mary's 71;  Ravens 103 - Rebel 73;  Flatbush 74 - Panthers 70;  Brooklyn USA 84 - Newark Rams 82.

4/26/98    Kentucky Lexington Herald on Derby Festival:  MVP goes to Tackett in Classic.  Erick Barkley doesn't get any print, but the boxscore reads 15 assists.  That's easier when your team scores 157 points.

4/26/98   Updated teams section for Pitman, Bridgehampton and Rancocas Valley.  Will add more AAU team profiles in the coming weeks.

4/25/98     IS8 results:  BQ Express 87 Bx. Ravens 86.  Andre Barrett and Kenny Satterfield on Ravens, not Hawks.  Roster updates for Hawk and Ravens. (This site is going to the birds!)   Newark Rams (Josh Moore, et al) vs. Brooklyn USA on Sunday at 2:00.

4/25/98     Steve Grandin at AOL:  'Nice touch putting NYSSWA all-state on your site. As one of NYSSWA pollsters, I know that it's always a struggle getting information on all of the best players, particularly in your area where there is so much talent. The fact that you have so much information on the site I'm sure helped.

Point of information: The geographic regions in New York are called sections (not districts); and, although most New York Cityers may not know it, they are more accurately described as (1) Lower Hudson Valley, (2) Capital District, (3) Central New York, (4) Southern Tier, (5) Genesee Valley, (6) Western New York, (7) Adirondacks, (8) Nassau County, (9) Catskills, (10) St. Lawrence Valley, and (11) Suffolk County.

But, considering you had to type 'em all in by hand, call 'em whatever you want -- at least they're on the web!!!  Again, nice touch.'  Thanks, Steve.  I'm from the Bronx - about the state, who knew?

4/25/98      Daily News - Johnson a Sooner and Perry Headed to FDU.

4/24/98    From IS8, Rmdadams at AOL:  'Riverside B wins while Riverside A was down by 18 to start the 4th.  My guess is that Riverside made the finals of the Governor's Cup and that is where Satterfield, Strong, Glover, Lyons and Bell were.'

4/24/98  from Nick Vendikos @ AOL:  'La Salle's Rodney Epperson was recently profiled in "Rolling Stone" magazine of all places.

4/24/98    Josh Moore may or may not be a St. Anthony Friar, but he is a Newark Ram  and they're at IS8 this Sunday, 2:00 pm -  against Brooklyn USA, no less.

4/24/98    Neil Kerr is a reporter for the Syracuse Dispatch: he's treasurer of the New York State Sports Writer's Association and editor of their weekly newsletter. His latest NYSSWA newsletter has the State Class 'A' through 'D' all star teams.

4/23/98   SPECIAL REPORT - SUMMER CAMPS: A Six-Part Feature By CHI's George Rodecker.

4/22/98   IS8 ADIDAS SPRING HIGH SCHOOL CLASSIC 1998: first cut, much more to follow in the next six weeks.

4/22/98  Daily News: For Holy Cross's Kabore, Wagner Is Choice.

4/21/98  PrepStars has their first cut at the class of 2000.  Nine of their 54 are from this site's region.  We've got Omar Cook, Kyle Cuffe, Walter Price, Mike Boynton, Andre Barrett and Taliek Brown.  We're missing Mark Curry (my bad), Tony Cavaliere of Atlantic City (wow! thought Andre Kirkland, Rashad's little brother was Atlantic City's hot shot soph!?) and Kevin Johnson, not the KJ of the NBA. This Kevin is currently playing for the Riverside Hawks.  Rmdadams at AOL: 'Kevin played for Milford Academy this year. He is a 6-5 1/2 swingman who transferred from Evander Childs.'  All three profiles will be in the sophomore section soon. John Miciotta @erols: 'I did not realize that Mark Curry, who grew up in Queens, ended up at Seton Hall Prep. I am glad to see it since he is in a school that will challenge him academically. The one complaint I do have is what I consider to be the glaring omission of CK's Zack Williams. I guess they thought they had too many metro area kids and must think Kyle Cuffe will grow into a center. It's hard for me to imagine there's a tougher more physical rebounder than Zack. I know one of the services had him rated 26th at the start of the season I can't imagine his stock fell that much.'  Web note:  In the CHSAA championship game Rice beat CTK 75-72.  Zack Williams started at center for CTK, he scored 4 points and when he fouled out in the fourth quarter, his teams was leading by three.  Kyle Cuffe did not play for Rice.

4/21/98   John P Miciotta @erols: 'the Marvin McCullough you and "Hoop Scoop" have listed as a 7th grader is in fact an 8th grader at Mt. Carmel and will be attending All Hallows HS this fall. I did not think there could be two kids with exactly the same name in consecutive classes who are both great point guards so I checked and the Marvin McCullough they have listed as a 7th grader and the kid I saw as an 8th grader whose dad was a great player at Manhattan Center are one and the same. He has terrific instincts, composure, and a great handle. Of course with all kids that age his success will depend on how his body develops but  his most important inches (the one's from his eyebrows to the top of his head) are as good as they come. Two more players you should add to your 8th graders list are Jason Wingate, a 5'7" point man who is the blue chipper in a fine Rice recruiting class and Steve Burtt Jr. who'll be attending All Hallows come September.'  - Thanks, John, I'll make the changes.

4/21/98    Unhappily removed the now defunct News Works Search link.  Added Recruiting Beat to links.

4/20/98   Newsday:  Duane Green - Nassau Player of the year.   Dale Menendez is Suffolk Player of the year.   All-Long Island Boys Basketball Team.

4/20/98   Michael Miller has details on 1998 Snapple Eddie Jones All-Star Classic at the Forum, but Anthony Glover was a no-show.

4/19/98   Rmdadams at AOL:  "Asbury Park Press' Player of the Year Raheem Carter has committed to Monmouth."

4/18/98   Rmdadams at AOL:  'The IS-8 Spring Classic started today at 9:30am. Panthers over St. Mary's, 54-40. Brooklyn USA is loaded with Manga Charles, Jermaine Clark, Jerome Holman, Derek Rankin, Joel Suarez, Desmond Herod, and Dwayne Archibold. 4/17/98:   Updated site for juniors Neil McCallum, Josh Hobbs, Ryshaun Conover and sophomore Jamaal Tate.

4/16/98:   One and two reminders from West Coast Hoops that Anthony Glover invades the Forum this Sunday.  And two excerpts from the Florida Times-Union about Kenny Walker, that don't make it sound as if he's getting ready to take AG's place as the Rice center.

4/16/98:   From Rmdadams at AOL:  'IS-8 Adidas Spring High School Classic at IS-8 Middle School in South Jamaica, Queens, begins Thursday, 4/16 and continues through the beginning of June. There are two games each Thursday (7pm start) and Friday (6:30pm start). Saturday and Sunday will feature four games with 9:30am, 11am, 12:30pm, and 2pm starting times.'    Newsday last May:   Ex-Basketball Player Has League of His Own.

4/15/98:   Brick Oettinger:  The top 25 list is changing shape - and he's added Anthony Glover to it!

4/15/98:   Daily News: Chance to Show Colleges Stuff.

4/15/98:   From John P Miciotta @erols: 'Your freshman list should have included Calvin Smith a 6-6 center from NY Catholic league frosh runner-up Xaverian High. While statistics may not show him as one of the best players yet, he is one of the best prospects when potential is considered. At 6-6 and just 13 he has a lithe and agile body with long arms and great quickness. Like all young fellas he needs strength and a "game face" but his athletic build and excellent preparation ( he played CYO for St.Ann's-St. George of Brooklyn and Mt.Carmel grammar school with Loughlin's Ted Mumford) indicate that by the time this freshman class are seniors he will be one of its top big men. Also Robert Barry a 6-7 frosh at CTK is someone who came to them with very little experience but great tools to work with. He is strong, runs like a gazelle and already shows skills that will allow him to face the basket as he gains experience. Most important he is a hard and willing worker, and the CTK staff loves his coachability.'  Thanks, John.

4/14/98:   From Stephen Finamore at College Hoop Insider:  'Al Harrington (St. Patrick’s) NJ, has St. John’s, Seton Hall, and Georgia Tech all on his list. I say he goes to St. John’s. Speaking with Al at Magic’s game (who didn’t I speak with that day?) Al told me he was very impressed with Red Storm head coach Fran Fraschilla showing up in Detroit to see him play.  But then again, Harrington’s coach Kevin Boyle had lunch with Seton Hall head coach Tommy Amaker just a few days ago, so you never know?'

4/14/98:   Bergen Record Online:   Teaneck's Sessoms bound for Wisconsin.  Daily News: Barkley Must Get His ACT Together.

4/10/98  Getting ready for Spring and Summer circuit, expanded Junior section by about 20 names.  Also added an early ratings table in front of section.  Should be fun to watch it change in the next five months.  Away for the weekend - be back on Monday!

4/10/98   Added a table to the top of the seniors section - current ratings and commitments.  Will try to keep it current!

4/10/98  Inquirer: All-star games give Miller a taste of big time.   Daily News:  Mountaineers Nab Ex-Erasmus Star - Calvin Bowman.

4/9/98    In Capital Classic Troy Murphy is MVP, Glover and Clarke score 22 and 14 , only Miller with 5 struggles - see Inquirer and Washington Post.   Confirmation from Patrick Jira, 'Kenny Walker of Wolfson H.S in Jacksonville, FL appears headed to Rice H.S in Bronx, NY. Walker's top two appear to be St.John's and South Florida.'  Web note:  Kenny played for Florida Stars AAU team in Boo Williams tournament last weekend.  (Obviously, he's still got the school year to finish).  Riverside Church Hawks won the tournament with a roster that included Cook, Satterfield, Z. Williams and ex-Salesian star, Jeremy Logan.

4/8/98    'The Hoop Group presents the Metropolitan Top 100 this weekend April 10 & 11 at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Hackensack, NJ.  Registration is between 7:45 and 8:45 am on Friday. 4/8/98   from Daily News:   Time Right to Look At Schools.   1997-98 Boys All-City Team.   Boys Player Of the Year.   Bronx-Manhattan CHSAA Boys Team.   Brooklyn-Queens CHSAA Boys.  Brooklyn PSAL Boys.   Queens PSAL Boys. 4/7/98   Newsday:  Selects Long Island CHSAA stars!  Yes, Chris, we cover Long Island hoops!

4/7/98   Inquirer:  Little to fear for Eustace star, Andre Williams.

4/7/98  From: Chris.L.Nicholas:  "Do you guys cover Long Island hoops, or just NYC. Two names from LI you should look out for: juniors Drew Nicholas (yes, my brother) and Barry Baker. Both are the real deal. Drew plays at LI Lutheran who just lost to Rice this past weekend. He dropped 49 pts in 2 games and tied a Federation record for 3's in Tournament (10). Led his team in scoring and is being recruited by mid-Division I schools in the East and Syracuse. He's still an unknown, but after this weekend that may not be true much longer. Barry Baker plays for North Babylon and he's a point guard who's also a big-time football player. I think he averaged about 22 pts. this year, and he's one of the top 2 or 3 player on LI returning."

4/6/98   Daily News list of all city teams - nine categories, and the CHSAA season scoring totals.

4/5/98   Hoop Scoop:  'It looks like St. John's and Seton Hall are both out for 6'5 Anthony Glover from New York (Rice) NY. And that's not a rumor, because he told HOOP SCOOP New York City Editor Ron Naclerio Thursday night at the 24th Annual Wheelchair Classic at St. John's University that UNLV and Arkansas are the two schools between which he will decide. By the way, Glover was the MVP for the Manhattan team with 28 points and 24 rebounds in the Wheelchair Classic. The MVP for the Queens team was 5'8 Deon Jones from Laurelton (Christopher Robin) NY with 12 point and 14 assists and the high scorer was 6'4 Melvin Robinson from Bayside (Cardozo) NY with 24 points. Queens beat Manhattan, 110-105, to capture its third consecutive Wheelchair Title.'
