6/15/05 This is our first update for the class of 2008 with the top forty ranked and the next forty-one listed alphabetically. It was compiled by referencing Metro Hoops and Hoop Scoop and by watching play at IS8, UDC,  ProStyle and high school games. John P Miciotta and others on this site contributed to the profiles and player evaluations, but many won't rank players. This listing should be taken very, very lightly. These players are still young. Listing them here is primarily a reason to profile currently prominent players from this class in one place on this site. I apologize to all those who should be on this list, but are not, due to my ignorance. For comments and suggestions please email nycnjhoops@aol.com.

Tyreke Evans 6-4 wing American Christian, Pa.   5/8/05 Metro Hoops: 'Tyreke “The Beast” Evans (Sam Rines Allstars)- I told you guys for months how nice this kid is and he proved me right. He was definitely the talk of the tourney after his 41 point performance against the New England Playaz. Yes he is 15 and a true freshman, so stop the rumors. Just sit back and enjoy his work while it’s free.'  4/5/05 Coach Paul Suber: 'Over the weekend  the Team Next organization 6th, 7th and 9th grade teams traveled to Baltimore, Md. to the "Give me that Baltimore Bump" Basketball Tournament hosted by the Baltimore Stars A. A. U. program. The 9th grade team lost to the A.I. Raiders (2004 8th grade National Champs) in the semi-finals after beating them earlier in the tournament.

The game featured the #1 (Tyreke Evans) and the #3 (Erving Walker) freshmen in the country. Erving Walker won the battle (30 pts. to 16 pts.) but lost the war, as Tyreke's squad won the game, and eventually won the tournament over the Indiana Municiple Gardens A. A. U. team.'  2/05 Metro Hoops: 'The nations #1 freshman Tyreke Evans scored 23 points, snatched 9 rebounds and dished out 7 assist as American Christian defeated Trenton Central 81-63.'

Ashton Gibbs..6-0 point guard, Seton Hall Prep NJ.  4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Ashton as their co-player of the year. 'No freshman entered the season with as much hype as Gibbs, but pressure always comes along with that hype. Ashton handled the pressure and lived up to the hype. From his first jumper at the Tip Off Classic to his clutch foul shooting in TOC final, Gibbs handled himself like a true winner. Next season look for Ashton to blossom as he will have to assume the offensive load for the Pirates.'   4/1/05 NJO: Essex county season in review -- Freshman of the year,  12/21/04 Metro Hoops: Coming out party for Ashton Gibbs - 'With all the hype surrounding him, Gibbs seemed calm and collected in his debut. Ashton hit his first two jumpers and occasionally took over the point. I had a little concern about how NJ’s #1 frosh would fit into the flex offense, but that was put to rest after Sunday night.' 11/19/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen -- # 1. Ashton Gibbs (Seton Hall Prep). With the decision on which school to attend behind him, Gibbs should be ready to handle his business. The transfer of guard Porter Braswell should open the door for NJ #1 frosh. Ashton’s ball handling and trade mark spin move will keep defenders on their heels.  What makes Gibbs special is when most players shy away he wants the ball in the clutch.  6/04 Ashton is headed for Seton Hall Prep this fall.

6/6/04 Metrohoops Showcase Day 1 Report. 'Being the #1 8th Grader in NJ can come with tremendous pressure but this doesn’t seem to bother Gibbs. His court presence and swagger is not that of the average middle schooler. He plays with supreme confidence on both ends of the floor. His strength also gives him the ability to drive in the lane and finish.'  2/23/03 tbone: 'Ashton Gibbs  5'9 Pg, Scotch Plains NJ. Averaging 25 pts a game as a 7th grader. and is not playing weak comp. Already has caught the eye of Seton Hall Prep, and St.Patricks. Friends with Derrick Caracter, so it looks like a lock St.Pats will land this gem.'   5/17/04 John P Miciotta: 'Saturday's Right Bounce Classic -- Newark's Ashton Gibbs was outstanding in capturing MVP honors, scoring 20 points for the winners.  3/1/03 The third IS 8 game matched Team Next with 80 Park and Team Next led for most of the game before fourth quarter. That's when Malik Boothe (17) took over and 80 Park took a 52 - 46 victory. JJ Garvin chipped in with 14. Ashton Gibbs led Team Next with 15, Ervin Walker had 10, but it wasn't enough. IS8's Hassan Jennings and Anthony Myers picked their midget first team: Malik Boothe, J.J. Garvin, Malcolm Pope, Ervin Walker and Ashton Gibbs

Erving Walker 5'6 point guard Christ the King NY  10/27/04 The Hoopstown Top 25 Underclassmen # 8. Erving Walker – One of the most skilled 9th graders in the country right now… Has great speed and excellent ball handling abilities… Great shooter from three point range… He distributes the ball well on offense and goes after it like a hawk on defense… Tremendous work ethic…  6/04 Erving  is headed for Christ the King this fall. 8/30/02 JPM: 'Erving plays for Team Next. He is the current star of this class and a nice kid.  He has great speed and control advancing the ball, is a dead-eye shooter with three point range, he keeps the ball moving on offense and hawks after it on defense.  Presently his skill and work ethic are tops in this group and if he can continue to grow physically Erving should be a marvelous high school player.'

8/02  Erving was the runner-up Wolfpack's MVP at IS8 in the winter of 2001 and starred for Team Next at Pro-Style (the Biddies leading scorer) and Kenny Anderson this year.  3/03 GB # 1.

Daryl Bryant 6'0 2G, Brooklyn NYC.  6/24/05 NY Hoops: Daryl "Truck" Bryant Profile.   6/30/05 Breakdown: Camp Next Report: 'Truck was the most physical guard at the camp. He used his brute strength to finish many tough drives to the basket. It also came in handy when he was defending. He is not your typical flashy New York point guard, but he is very consistent and tough minded. He also plays above the rim.'  8/15/04 UDC Midget championship - Gauchos 41, Future Stars 39. Luckily for the Gauchos there wasn't a fifth period. They led 16-4 after one, 25-16 at the half and 32-29 after three with the game tied at 37 and 39 in the last minute. That's when Daryl (Truck) Bryant scored 3 of his 5 points and got the final assist to center Allen Forbes for the game winning basket. I wasn't at IS8 but in that last minute I could almost hear Pete Edwards saying, 'Who wants the rock now?' Truck did and that was the difference.

8/04 Daryl is playing for the Gauchos midgets at UDC and he is heading for St Raymond this year with the 'chos center, Allen Forbes. 7/04 Daryl is nicknamed Truck; he's a wide-body wing forward with perimeter skills. Daryl was on the Eastern Invitational St Raymond roster at Fordham last month but he's playing for Team Reebock at Conrad McRae with three Xaverian commits - Vincent Council, David Imes and Brandon Romain.

Travon Woodall 5-10 guard St Anthony, NJ. 6/30/05 Breakdown: Camp Next Report: 'Woodhall has all the skills you want in a guard. He has court vision, handles, a nice shooting touch, the ability to finish above the rim, and good defense. In addition, he understands the game and plays with a lot of poise. He received plenty of playing time this past season with basketball power St Anthony's and his performance at Camp Next proved that he deserved every minute of it.'  4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Travon as their co-Player of the Year. 'Travon has been out to prove that he was the best 9th grader in the state since the season began. This type of hunger allowed Woodall to crack the St. Anthony lineup as a true frosh. Once Travon saw the light he ran with it. He is a tenacious defender who plays with great passion and respect for the game. He is also one of the most respectful players I’ve ever had the privilege of interviewing.'   11/19/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen -- # 2. Travon Woodall ( St. Anthony). He probably won’t say it but Travon feels he should be number 1 in this class. Woodall has good reason, the ultra quick gets to the basket like a blur. Travon plays defense like a hawk and will rebound for you. His good attitude and apparent work ethic should earn him minutes with the Friars.

7/5/04 Metro Hoops:  'Travon Woodall the  8th grader headed to St. Anthony’s is a speedy scoring machine. The 5’9 guard uses his speed and quick release to score in bunches. He also ran his team when he was required to.' 6/3/04 George Fontan: 'Travon Woodall is a 5-11 guard, forward and is a very good shooter and ball handler. He led the Jersey City Boys Club to the 2004 New Jersey state championship. Travon went to the Top 100 Clinic and was on the same team as his good friend, Ashton Gibbs. He will attend St Anthony next year.'

Sylvan Landesberg 6'3 forward Holy Cross NY.  6/04 Sylven is headed for Holy Cross this fall. 5/3/03 Sylven  is a highly regarded seventh grader who played two years up for the Long Island Trotters in the Pro Style Midget division this past season. He led his team in scoring and dropped 29 in a semi final loss to the Springfield Rifles. Sylven and his father posed for this shot at the game's end. 8/30/02 JPM: 'Sylven was at the Christ the King camp this summer and showed as a good shooter.  He's not yet moving his feet well enough on defense but that figures to come with added strength and experience. It looks as if Sylven has room to grow physically.'

3/01 Sylven was the star of the Elmont Panther team at IS8 in the winter of 2001.  3/03 GB # 4.

Samardo Samuels 6-8 forward OSNA, LI.  6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'He’s already very polished for his size and age. Combine that with a good aggressive streak and a nice feel for the game, and you have an outstanding prospect who will be a top player nationally in this class.'  3/3/05 Stephen Johnston: 'Samardo Samuels, 6'-9", 240 and he just arrived last summer from Jamaica, West Indies. But he is already the best player at Our Savior New American School. He plays for a team loaded with upperclassmen that includes a starting center who has committed to Fresno State, James Tchana. Samardo will be among the top sophomores in the country next year. He was just named to the all tournament team at the Champions Classic in N.C. which boasted over 80 division one prospects. His team lost to Oak Hill in the chip. Don't sleep on him, a monster in the making. Just needs seasoning to his Jamaican spice.'  11/9/04 Eric Jaklitsch: 'Samardo Samuels a 6'8" 240 power forward from Jamaica. Samuels has the chance to be a very special player. He rebounds and scores around the basket against more experienced players. If Samuels continues to work hard he will be a high major recruit.'

Curtis Loving 6-4 forward Rice NY. 6/30/05 Breakdown: Camp Next Report: 'We were "Loving" Curtis' game all weekend. At 6'5, he dominated inside and out at the camp. He was the most impressive in transition where he threw down old school Michael Jordan dunks with ease. He also has a nice solid shot and his handles are good enough for him to create his own shot against pesky guards and bigger players.  2/21/05 John P Miciotta: 'CHSAA Class AA freshmen quarterfinals -- Game 3 saw Rice's frontcourt duo of Curtis Loving and Kafele Carty handle St. Francis Prep. Loving may well be one of the city's most improved players because he now has the kind of competitive streak needed to take full advantage of his outstanding physical tools. At 6'4" he runs very well, shows facing skills but is also willing to mix it up inside.'

Michael Rosario 6-1 guard Saint Anthony, NJ. 6/20/05 Jersey Journal: Mike Rosario's 17 leads JCBC.  11/19/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen -- # 3. Michael Rosario (St. Anthony). Woodall’s running mate for the next four years, Rosario is a flat out scorer. Mike has a good stroke shooting the three, but his strength is scoring in transition. Under General Hurley’s guidance look for  Rosario's point guard skills to develop.

Khalif Staton 6-2 guard Lincoln Brooklyn.  11/13/04 Coach Dwayne (Tiny) Morton: 'I might have the best freshman in the city this year in Khalif Staten.'   2/5/04 Hoop Scoop:  Nation's top 120 8th graders (class of 2008) includes  # 37. Khaliff Staton 6'1 Brooklyn, NY.

Reggie Davis 6-4 forward Xaverain, Brooklyn. 6/30/05 Breakdown: Camp Next Report: 'Davis had the inside/outside combination going at the camp. He displayed a smooth perimeter game with nice open court dribble moves and solid shooting. He posted smaller opponents and often finished with an "and one" after being fouled.'  10/20/04 Coach Jack Alesi: 'A trio of great freshmen, 6'5" David Imes, 6'2" Brandon Romain and 6'3" Reggie Davis are intriguing possibilities.'  8/04 Reggie is the Metro Hawks star this summer and will join point guard Vincent Council, fellow wing forward Brandon Romain and center David Imes at Xaverian this year. He's shown here holding his UDC Biddy division leading scorer trophy.

David Imes 6-5 forward, Xaverian Brooklyn NY.  10/20/04 Coach Jack Alesi: 'A trio of great freshmen, 6'5" David Imes, 6'2" Brandon Romain and 6'3" Reggie Davis are intriguing possibilities.'  7/04 David is among the elite of this class right now. He's mobile, strong and plays aggressively. Best of all - he may have more growing to do. David is playing at Conrad McRae for Team Reebock with Vincent Council, Darryl (Truck) Bryant and Brandon Romain this summer. 6/04 David is headed for Xaverian this fall.

Johnathan Riggs 6'3 forward Bergen Catholic, NJ. GB #14  8/04 Jonathan has moved to New Jersey but is still playing for the Gauchos midget champions at UDC. Jonathan will attend Bergen Catholic this fall, where he'll play both football and basketball.  8/30/02 JPM: ' He should not be rated # 14 in this class. Try # 2 behind Erving. Jonathan has good size, length and ability.  He has an ok handle and the quickness and agility to play on the perimeter at the high school level.'  5/5/01 Pro-Style Final Fours -- Game 8 - Biddy Division The Final Fours L.I. Lightning 46, Gauchos 27. Players of the Game: L.I. Lightning: Andrew Gabriel, 12 points, Gauchos: Jonathan Rigg, 12 points. 3/03 GB # 14.

Brandon Romain 6-1 forward Brooklyn NY. 10/20/04 Coach Jack Alesi: 'A trio of great freshmen, 6'5" David Imes, 6'2" Brandon Romain and 6'3" Reggie Davis are intriguing possibilities.'   6/04 Brandon is headed for Xaverian this fall. He's one of the Conrad McRae tournament leading scorers with a 19.9 regular season average playing for the 8-1 Team Reebock with fellow Xaverian commits, 6-4 David Imes and 5-7 point guard Vincent Council.

Desmond Wade 5'9 point guard Linden NJ.  6/05 Desmond played for Coach D R Sharpe's New Jersey Roadrunners at the Rumble in the Bronx.  4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Desmond. 'Wade had an outstanding year handling the rock for the Tigers. He began the year as the 6th man but cracked the lineup when LJ McGee went down with an injury. Desmond stepped in and ran the show like an upperclassman. His finest moment may have been his performance against St. Pats in the Union County finals.   4/1/05 NJO: Union county season in review -- Surprise player: Freshman guard Desmond Wade showed promise the moment he stepped onto the court for Linden.

Anyone could see that he had a knack for finding the open man and tenacity on defense, but no one could have expected the poise he demonstrated as the team's main point guard over the last 10 games following a season-ending injury to L.J. McGhee.  All-sophomore/freshman team first team: Desmond Wade.  12/21/04 Metro Hoops: Coming out party for Desmond Wade -- 'The freshmen guard seemed unfazed by the Tip Off Classics atmosphere. Playing starter minutes off the bench Wade ran the show for the Tigers like a seasoned veteran. Desmond played his customary lockdown defense while dropping 6 points and 6 dimes.'   11/18/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen --# 8. – This 5’9 ball hawk on ball defense is the best in this class. He specializes in locking down opposing point guards. Wade gave St. Pat's guards fits this summer at the Metro classic. Wade also isn’t afraid to drive into the trees for a needed bucket. Don’t be surprised if he cracks the Tigers lineup. 7/17/03 tbone: 'Desmond Wade Linden 5'8 PG.. Member of the 4 time NJ State AAU Champs Linden Flames. Desmond has put on shows at the AAU nationals that has put his name on a few lists for players to watch. He is going to E-Port Middle School for 8th grade Prep.'

Ring Ayeul  7-5 center OSNA, LI. 6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'Obviously size is the best tool the young man from the Sudan has.  At the high school level he has demonstrated an ability to block and change shots, as well as the hands to catch the ball and score on stick backs.  The blessing of his size means he has lots of work to do improving his coordination and balance.  If he keeps working hard he’ll develop into a fine prospect.'  11/9/04 Eric Jaklitsch: 'The other freshman is 7'5" (no that is not a misprint!) Ring Ayeul by the way of the Sudan. Ayeul is a little bit raw on the offensive end however he has a Kevin Garnett like frame, is a superior defender, and can run the floor like a gazelle.'

1/19/05 Chris Phillips: 'Just to let you know that Ring Ayeul, the7'5" blocking machine from the Sudan has arrived in the USA and will be in Our Savior New American this Friday. It's been quite a journey for this young man from the war torn country of the Sudan to the refugee camp in Nairobi, Kenya and finally arriving in the USA. He is also a victim of the war as he has lost both parents. I want to give special thanks to Commander Acueil, Deng Leek, Pastor Ron Stelzer, Bob Bass, Eric Jaklitsch, Brian Cooperman and Robin Reid. Without this group's effort this young man would not be afforded the chance for a good Christian education in a safe environment. I also would like to thank the host family that never says no when it comes to helping people, Marsha and Bill Schmidt. At this time when basketball and the USA has gotten black eye after black eye at home and in the international community here is a feel good story for everyone to enjoy.'

Andre Birdsong Burlington Township, NJ.4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Andre. 'Birdsong started the season with a bang scoring 25 in his debut with Roncocas Valley, after a run in with his coach Andre transferred to neighboring Burlington Township. Birdsong finished the season with decent numbers as he teamed with Adam Braswell to form one of the youngest and talented backcourts in South Jersey.' 1/16/05 NJ Hoops: 'Birdsong, ranked as the NJ Hoops # 4 freshman has moved from Rancocas to neighboring Burlington Township.' 12/24/04 Metro Hoops: 'It didn’t take long for Andre Birdsong from Rancocas Valley to display his skills on the NJ basketball scene. MH #4 frosh scored 23 including 4 treys in his high school debut against Willingboro. With Coach Bryan Warrick at the helm Birdsong won’t be slowing down anytime soon.'  12/3/04 Hoop Scoop: Top Philadelphia/South Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania 9th graders: # 11 Andre Birdsong 6'1 two guard Rancocas Valley NJ.  11/19/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen -- # 4. Andre Birdsong (Rancocas Valley) Andre is in the right place at the right time. This 5’10 flash loves to go up and down while piling up points. His coach Bryan Warrick is the same and isn’t afraid to showcase freshmen. With Warrick’s push Birdsong should have South Jersey humming.

Terrell Halloway, point guard St Dominic, LI.  6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'Strong and speedy point guard who began his career at St. Benedict’s (NJ) but has transferred closer to home at St. Dom’s.  He has a good knack for scoring he’ll get better as he learns to compliment that with good playmaking skills.  He’s willing to lead a team and will get better with experience.'  3/05 NY Hoops: Coming back home to St Dominic's - Terrell “Tutu” Halloway.  2/1/04 Hoop Scoop top 225 national rankings includes # 23 Terrell Holloway.  5/17/04 John P Miciotta: 'Saturday's Right Bounce Classic at LIU -- Terrell Halloway is a little slight but very quick and heady.'

Marquis Grant 6'5 Christ the King, NY  10/29/04 The CK incoming freshmen class with Marquis Grant 6'4, Joe Nuss 6-1, Ryan Pearson 6-3, Denzel Pressey 5-9, Tony Turkovic 5'8 and  Erving Walker 5'4 looks to be one of the best in the city. 1/19/03 Pro-Style Game6 - biddy division-- Team Next (B) (38) vs. Far-Lin 4 Life (29).   Players of the game-- * Team Next: Marquise Grant (18 points), * Far-Lin 4 Life: Justin Newton (9 points).  5/17/04 John P Miciotta: 'Saturday's Right Bounce Classic

Albert (AJ) Rogers 6'5 St Anthony, NJ  9/04 AJ has made a u-turn and is now enrolled at St Anthony in Jersey City.  6/04 Albert is headed for Bishop Loughlin this fall. He could be the star of a very talented and deep class.  9/1/03 Coach Rudy King: 'First I would like to congratulate the Wee All Star team for playing a strong game to capture the 2003 Championship. This game was everything that it was hyped up to be. Led by Lenny McNeil and MoMo (Game MVP - 23 pts.), the Wee All Stars came out ready to play and showed their big game experience. The Brooklyn Bridge led by Brandon Romain (Sportsmanship Award - 31pts. 16 bds.) and A J Rogers (16pts. 15bds.) played one of the biggest games of their young lives and put on a great show for the very enthusiastic crowd who anticipated this matchup the entire tournament.'  5/17/04 John P Miciotta: 'Saturday's Right Bounce Classic -- AJ Rogers was outstanding in the pivot. His footwork is getting better to go along with his fine passing and rebounding.

Vincent Rogers 6-5 center, Ga. 6/12/05 Rumble in the Bronx - Vincent  is the 6-5 forward playing for Team Next's 15's entry.  8/12/04 Ben Asher: 'Vincent Rogers is from Georgia visiting this summer with family in NY.'

Jameel Grace  5-9 guard Seton Hall Prep, NJ  - 11/18/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen -- # 9 Grace is the other part of the freshmen backcourt package. Jameel leaves all the flash and glamour at home and just gets it done. Grace is a hard nose point who could run a team with no problem. Jameel and Ashton should keep a smile on Coach Farrell's face the next couple of years.

Lenny McNeil 6'1 New York   11/6/04 Coach Oliver Antigua: 'Our notable frosh include a great class of 6'0 guard Daryl Bryant, 6'3 forward Lenny McNeil,  6'3 forward Allan Forbes,  6'2  forward Dorvell Carter, 5'11 guard Desmian Greer and 5'6 point guard Ian Umpierre.'  2/29/04 Lenny was a part of the Team Next IS8 Midget championship team with Erving Walker and Lance Stephenson. 9/1/03 Coach Wee Francis: 'Wee All-stars took the chip at the Ron Artest tournament 13 & under division against Brooklyn Bridge. This game show cased some of the best 13 & under talent in the city. I want to thank all of the Wee All-stars for their hard work and get ready to hit the books and keep those grades up at all times! 2 - Lenny McNeil, 19 pts. He would've scored an easy 40 and took the MVP had it not been for a questionable call in which he fouled out.

Kafele Carty 6-0 forward Rice, NYC. 11/1/04 Dre Calloway: 'The promising freshmen for Rice are 6-5 Kafele Carty, 6-4 Bryant Crowder, 6-4 Curtis Loving, 5-9  Kemba Walker and me, I'm 5-11.'   3/2 Kafele played for the Abyssinian Church.midget and junior teams at winter IS8 with Malcolm Pope.  He's also with Malcolm at this winter's ProStyle. 3/03 GB nr. 7/5/03 At at UDC Abyssinian has Melquan Bolding (19), seventh grader Kafele Carty (5) and Malcolm (Snoop) Pope (17) and they bested Team Next despite 19 and 10 from TN's seventh graders Ervin Walker and Lenny McNeil.

David Johnson Jr. 5-6 guard Lakewood Prep, NJ. 4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes David. 'The miniature blur has helped turn Lakewood Prep to a legitimate Prep A contender. His lightning quick moves and bullet passes keeps defenders and teammates aware the entire game. Johnson is also not afraid to put the ball in the hole if required.'   4/1/05 NJO: 'Prep season in review -- Most improved: Lakewood Prep went from 5-14 last year to an 18-5 campaign that concluded with a hard-fought loss to Rutgers Prep in the Prep B Division title game. The turnaround can be mainly attributed to an infusion of talent that included junior forward Corey Brown, a transfer from Toms River North, and freshmen guards David Johnson and Terry Hicks. Brown averaged 24 points and delivered the state's first 50-point salvo of the season when he hit for 53 against Ranney on Dec. 13, while Johnson, the son of head coach Dave Johnson, averaged 22 points per game and is regarded as one of the state's top freshmen.'    11/19/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen --  # 5. Dave Johnson Jr. (Lakewood Prep). Dave’s quickness and court vision makes him the best pure point guard in this class. In the era of shoot first guards Johnson is a throwback. He enjoys hitting teammates with pinpoint passes. Dave also shoots the three ball well, which opens up his penetration game.

10/3/04 Ben Asher: 'I was looking over your class of 2008 page and I came across an error. David Johnson, (one of the top and most underrated players in New Jersey) is not going to St. Anthonys, he is attending Lakewood Prep in Howell NJ. Also, David will be playing with the Gauchos from now on.'  6/04 David is enrolled at St Anthony for this fall.  6/7/04 Metrohoops Showcase Day 2 Report: 'Dave was selected to the All Star game as an 8th grader but he proved it was well deserved. Johnson played very heady this weekend. Penetrating and dishing when necessary but also hitting the outside shot. His quickness and pinpoint passing was very noticeable despite his size.'

Dre Calloway 5-11 forward Rice NYC.  11/1/04 Dre Calloway: 'The promising freshmen for Rice are 6-5 Kafele Carty, 6-4 Bryant Crowder, 6-4 Curtis Loving, 5-9  Kemba Walker and me, I'm 5-11.'   8/15/04 UDC Midget championship - Gauchos 41, Future Stars 39. The Gauchos Dre Calloway and the Stars Quinten Seaberry each led their teams with 12 point efforts. 8/04 Dre is playing for the Gauchos at UDC with Darryl Bryant, Jonathan Riggs and Allen Forbes.

Jaheen Antney 6'0 guard St Patrick, NJ. 12/14/04 'My name is Jaheem Antney and I'm in the ninth grade. Now you keep putting me with the '07 class. I'm in the '08 class and I go to St. Patrick.'

Vincent Council 5-6 guard Brooklyn NY.  2/21/05 John P Miciotta: 'CHSAA Class AA freshmen quarterfinals -- The key to Xaverian's  success however was the steady hand of point guard Vincent Council, who not only was able to get his teammates involved with passes off penetration, but with pinpoint and perfectly timed connections that were the result of his ability to anticipate how Molloy's zone would shift. While there may be point guards in his class who shoot better or are quicker, none does a better job running their team than the Vincent does. And as he begins to grow taller and stronger physically, he'll be able to keep defenses honest with improved outside shooting and the ability to finish drives with baskets as well as assists.' 7/04 Vincent is a point guard who looks to set up the offense first. That's a particularly good idea at Conrad McRae where he's on Team Reebock with David Imes, Brandon Romain and Darryl (Truck) Bryant. Vincent, David and Brandon are all enrolled in Xaverian, while Truck is deciding between the Clippers and St Raymond.

Brian Cummings Sheepshead Bay, NY. 2/05 Brian starts for the Sharks and through 16 games is averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game. 2/6/05 John P Miciotta: 'The class of '08 list must include Brian Cummings of Sheepshead Bay High in Brooklyn. He has averaged 10 points per game playing for Roy Stienbach's team, has good length and knows his way around the basket. With continued maturity and experience he could well be one of the best players in this class.'

Frederick Dominguez 6'8 PF Newark (St. Benedict's). 11/5/03 Hoop Scoop:  Nation's top 90 8th graders (class of 2008) includes #6. Frederick Dominguez. 6/04 Frederick was on the Grey Bees roster at And 1 this month, though he didn't see much playing time.

Byron Freeman 6'1" G St. Mary's (LI) 5/11/05 John P Miciotta: Updates to class of 2008 list. 'Of all the players we omitted he is the most certain top 40 prospect. He is one of the most versatile scorers in this class. He can shoot the trey, drive to the basket, and score from middle distance. He's exceptionally strong. He'll almost certainly be a varsity player next season, and like all players moving from one level to the next, he will go through growing pains learning to compete at a higher level. Once he gets past those, he'll be an outstanding player for the Gaels.'

Trinity Fields guard Holy Cross, NY. 6/05 Rumble in the Bronx - Trinity played for the Metro Hawks 15's.   2/21/05 John P Miciotta: 'CHSAA Class AA freshmen quarterfinals -- The day's second game saw Holy Cross use a balanced attack to defeat Loughlin 75-66. The Knights used strong performances on the perimeter from Trinity Fields and Blaise Ffrench. Fields' effort was especially good because of how effectively he used his midrange game, hitting several short jumpers from the key. Those shots are missing from so many young players' arsenals these days, it was great to see.'

Edy Toussaint 6'2  forward Holy Cross, NYC. 10/04 Edy played for Team Underrated at IS8 this fall, one of the few freshmen to see some limited playing time at the Classic. He's also played with the Morris Brown Warriors this summer and for the Kenny Anderson All Stars at Conrad McRae.

Kevin Jones 6-6 forward Mt Vernon NY. 6/15/05 Coach Rob Rizzo, Westchester Haws 15's: ':Kevin, a 6'6" center, has developed range out to 18 feet to go along with his devastaying jump hook in the post.'   6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'Kevin is a quick and agile big man who rebounds well.  He’ll continue to improve with the expert tutelage of coach Bob Cimmino.  He’s got great tools, all he needs is continued maturity and continued hard work to put a game together.' 6/05 Rumble in the Bronx - Kevin is playing for the Westchester Hawks 15's.  2/16/05 John Malone (Section1Guy): 'At White Plains for the 2nd time in 8 days, Mt. Vernon defeated the Tigers after having a tight first half, 68-56. Freshmen Kevin Jones was impressive in the second half where he had all 8 of his points, and grabbed 9 big rebounds in the game.  1/6/05 John Malone (Section1Guy): 'Mt. Vernon extended their dominance in section 1 with a fairly easy 73-61 win over New Rochelle. The 6'5 frosh Kevin Jones had 5 points and 7 rebounds.' 11/8/04 Dwayne Murray, My Vernon assistant coach: 'Kevin Jones, who is 6' 6" now and Jeremy Smith 5' 11" have a great opportunity to make varsity as freshmen.'

Justin Newton 5-11 Queens, NY. 10/7/04 Justin was one of two freshmen at the New York City Independent School Showcase and he looked quite comfortable. 6/04 Justin is headed for Poly Prep this fall. 8/26/03 Rob Williams - Bistate Pythons: 'Justin is going into the 8th grade. He is definitely one to watch, very coachable, he has great instincts. He is a good kid as well. He is supposed to be going to 5-star junior camp, on the 17th.'  8/26/02 Antonio Cannon: 'K.A. Playoffs results 11u- Biddy Divsion: Farlin destroyed Mecca 58-29 behind 15pts from Justin Newton, who dominated the game on both ends of the floor!

9/22/02 A good day for young New York City hoopsters at the Hoop Group as four different city organizations won championships. The Bi-state Pythons came from behind to take the Boston Saintz 57 - 55 in the 7th grade division. Kevin Dean (12) tied it with a foul shot and won the game with a pull-up foul line jumper with three seconds to play. Allan Thomas (12), Justin Newton (8) and Brian Jones (8) each contributed to the win.

Quentral Jones Newark Science, NJ  11/18/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen -- # 7 The big guy has the most size in this class. With the proper work he can be a beast in the post. Quentral alters shots and tries to snatch every rebound. The most difficult part will be Newark Science to keep the Parochial Prep school coaches away from this kid.

Blaise Ffrench 5-8 guard, Holy Cross NY. 2/21/05 John P Miciotta: 'CHSAA Class AA freshmen quarterfinals -- The day's second game saw Holy Cross use a balanced attack to defeat Loughlin 75-66. The Knights used strong performances on the perimeter from Trinity Fields and Blaise Ffrench.'

Jerrel Lewis guard Rahway, NJ.  4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Jerrel.'Jerrell took the keys for the Rahway program and ran with them. He is a true floor general that loves to play aggressive defense. With the heart of a lion; Lewis refuses to back down against anyone.'    4/1/05 NJO: Union county season in review  All-sophomore/freshman team first team: Jerelle Louis, Rahway.  11/18/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen # 6 -- a true floor general and loves to compete. Jerrel tremendous ball handling should allow him to attack defenders from any angle. Lewis has good strength as a freshman which allows him to get past defenders. Jerrel also loves to lead the break and finish with a nice pass or strong layup.

Justin Breaker 6-0, guard Glassboro Middle School, NJ.  12/3/04 Hoop Scoop: Top Philadelphia/South Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania 9th graders: # 20 Justin Breaker 5'10 point guard Glassboro NJ, 11/30/04 trtsyc@yahoo.com: 'Justin Breaker is at Glasssboro High School starting shooting guard.'  4/9/03 Coach Antoine Sabb, Runnin Raiders: 'Justin Breaker -- Position: Combo 1 or 2, Brooklyn, New York, Glassboro Middle School, NJ. Nickname: Slick, Height: 5’10”.  A legitimate right hand playmaker who is a phenomenal scorer & great passer. Ranked in the top 15 in his class (2008) by several recruiting agencies. Excellent marquee ball handler with unlimited shooting range (pure shooter) 39.8% from 3 point range. Brings leadership and makes everyone around him better.   Deadly in the open offense. Crafty floor general. Great lateral movement with explosive speed.  Registered career high 48 points vs. Deptford Middle School. Scorched scoring books with 15 +20 point games during 7th grade year also 88.9 free throw percentage.  Knows what to do and when to do it. Justin will be playing high school ball at Camden High. A lot of coaches believe that he has the same ability as former Camden standout star Dajuan Wagner. He might be the best 7th grader in New Jersey.'

Jamie Shumate 6-5 forward St. Patrick, NJ.  11/18/04 Metro Hoops Top freshmen -- # 10 Jamie has size and strength, but needs to get better with his foot work. Shumate is in the right place to get the job done. The Celtics are known for getting the kinks out of undeveloped big men. At this stage Jamie is a decent rebounder and has a good nose for the ball.

Eugene Teague 6’7 forward, St Augustine NJ. 4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Eugene. 'Teague is a wide body that you will be hearing a lot from. He rebounds well and has a feathery touch on his turn around jumper. Once he seals you on the blocks you are at his mercy.'  12/18/04 Metro Hoops: ' The frosh will make it hard for the Hermits to keep him out of the starting lineup. The 6’7 inside force has a soft touch and great footwork. Teague will be a force to reckon with in years to come.'  12/3/04 Hoop Scoop: Top Philadelphia/South Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania 9th graders:  # 75 Gene Teague 6'6 forward St. Augustine, NJ

Jio Fontan guard St Anthony, NJ. 6/30/05 Breakdown: Camp Next Report: 'St Anthony's guard play will be great for the next three years. The trio of #16 Travon Woodall, #6 Jiovanny Fontan and #56 Mike Rosario is extremely talented. Fontan is the smallest of the group, but he gets to the basket at will and his basketball IQ is off the charts. Rosario is the best shooter and Woodhalll has the most complete game. Woodhall and Fontan are cousins. 2/05 Hoop Scoop # 121. nationally. 6/3/04 George Fontan: 'I also feel that one of the most underrated 8th grade PG in the Tri-state area is my son, Jio Fontan. He also plays for the New Jersey State champion Jersey City Boys Club and is also going to be attending St. Anthony's next year. He is what you would call a real point guard . If you watch him play you would think that he is already in high school.  His leg is broken but we are getting him ready for a great comeback for the Team Next Tournament.'

Alphabetical next best:

Shane Adams 6-3 forward MLK Middle School, Trenton NJ. 6/6/04 Metrohoops Showcase Day 1 Report. 'The 6’3 Adams displayed the ability to get an open look when he wanted it. His long wing span allowed him to cause fits in the passing lane. He also showed the heart to get rebounds despite his obvious thin frame. With the proper development he can be a player to reckon with.'

Andre Avent 5'10 center Brooklyn NY.  8/30/02 JPM: 'Andre is tall and athletic.  He's fairly mobile and excels near the basket.'  3/03 GB # 17.7/7/03 Anthony Clayburn: 'I coach the 7th & 8th grade travel team in Burlington Township and also various summer league teams. Andre Birdsong (completed 7th grade @ Holbein Elementary) from Mount Holly, NJ ... played for the New Jersey All-Stars and the New Jersey Prep Kings traveling team. He is currently playing for the Rancocas Valley JV summer league team. Arguably the best in Burlington County in his grade.'

Shasha Brown 5'4  point guard Bronx, NY St. Raymond's MS.  3/03 GB # 8. 6/04 Shasha is probably headed to St Ray's this fall. 2/6/05 John P Miciotta: According to informed sources talented point guard Sasha Brown is currently enrolled at St. Andrews High in Rhode Island.'

Kaseem Carr  5-7 point guard Mt St. Michael, Bronx.  6/17/05 Abdu Torrence, Thurgood Marshall Academy head coach: 'Kaseem Carr  played JV at Mt. St. Michael. A 5'6 guard built like a half back attacks the rim with a purpose and has a decent jumper. He is by one the best defensive guards in the city regardless of class. In Nationals last year he traveled with Team Roc the played the Reebok Raiders and he had his showdown with Tyreke Evans. In the first five minutes they switched Evans off of Carr because he couldn't stay in front of him. This kid rivals Erving Walker in talent.

Dorvel Carter 6-3 WF Rice, NY Mt. Carmel   6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'I am updating this simply to make note of the fact that Dorvel has grown to a long 6’3” which means he’s the right size for the position he projects to play in college (shooting guard)  I’m also not entirely certain how his transfer from St. Ray’s affects his playing eligibility. I suspect he must sit out one more semester which would make him eligible some time in January.  We at High Hoops will keep our readers posted as we get new information.'  4/05 Dorvel is playing for the Metro Hawks midget 13's at ProStyle along with Lamont (MoMo) Jones.  2/6/05 John P Miciotta: Also according to sources Dorvel Carter has transferred from St. Ray's to Rice.'  8/30/02 JPM: 'I've never seen him play but I've heard that Oliver Antigua of the Ravens loves his game and expects him to be a superior wing player in high school.'   8/02  Dorvell played for the Riverside Church Biddy team on a frontline with Lenny McNeil and Darryl Bryant.  They  lost to the Gauchos in the UDC championship this summer. 3/03 GB # 5.

Sean Corley 5'5 guard, Thurgood Marshal Academy, NYC   6/17/05 Abdu Torrence, Thurgood Marshall Academy head coach: 'Sean Corley, 5'5 guard who started on JV this season but could have easily made varsity. He has great court sense and good range behind 3 pt land. He plays baseline to baseline defense and runs the team like a floor general.'

Bryant Crowder 6'6" forward Rice, NY. 11/1/04 Dre Calloway: 'The promising freshmen for Rice are 6-5 Kafele Carty, 6-4 Bryant Crowder, 6-4 Curtis Loving, 5-9  Kemba Walker and me, I'm 5-11.'   5/17/04 John P Miciotta: 'Saturday's Right Bounce Classic -- There was one other post player who was admittedly unknown to us at "High Hoops" until yesterday. Bryant Crowder, a 6'6" Manhattan native is not quite as polished facing the basket as Imes or McNeil. Nor is he as polished in the pivot as Rogers but his running ability and good hands bode well for his future should he continue to work hard.

Kumar Davis, Nutley, NJ. 4/1/05 NJO: Hudson County season in review -- All-soph/frosh second team: Kumar Davis.

Devon Elliot 6-1 forward, Brooklyn NY. 6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'Strong, tough guard with good all around scoring skills. Improving playmaker and defender.'  2/21/05 John P Miciotta: 'CHSAA Class AA freshmen quarterfinals -- For Loughlin, Devon Elliott was outstanding offensively. He is a quick and strong wing player who shoots well and plays extremely hard.'
Raymond (RJ) Evans 6-0 forward Metro Hawks & Norwich Free Academy, northern Ct.  7/6/05 Ray Evans: 'Just a update on RJ Evans.15 years old ( class of 2008). Freshman year 3.8 gpa ( high honor classes), started quarterback for the varsity football team and starting 2 guard for varsity high school basketball team ( Norwich Free Academy, Ct.) regular season 10.ppg /State playoffs 21.5 ppg. 8/11/04 Coach Matt Walker: 'Need to take a look at Metro Hawks Raymond RJ Evans 5'11 two guard (class of 2008); he is a sleeper. Seen him play at Nike Swish, Go Hard Go Home, IS8 and UDC. He will be attending Norwich Free Academy, CT. Holds school scoring record 696 points (Middle School - Salem Middle School). Was 2004 MVP Kenny Smith Basketball Camp @ UNC. Played w/ NYC Panthers- (coach Cat Keyes), Metro Hawks (coach Arite Cox).

Ivy Fisher 5-6 point guard Our Savior Lutheran, NY. 6/30/05 Breakdown: Camp Next Report. Notes: 'Ivy Fisher is the younger brother of St Patrick's 2007 stud Corey Fisher. Ivy is much shorter than Corey, but Ivy is tough as nails. He plays with a lot of energy and he is a crafty ball handler and passer.'   6/05 And1 tournament: OSL beat Grady in the morning quarterfinals but lost 55-44 to St Benedict in the semis. That game was much closer than the final score indicates. In it 5-6 sophomore Ivy Fisher, Corey's younger brother did a poised job distributing the ball to his teammates and hitting the open shot. He'll get plenty of those with a frontcourt of Austin Wallace, high riser Nick Murphy and 6-9 center, Justin Burrell2/14/05 Coach Ron Dennis of K.Y.D.A: 'Our Saviour Lutheran,  Bronx defeated James Monroe  78-65 in the John F.Kennedy Classic. The O.S.L. backcourt of 5' 6" frosh point guard Ivy Fisher 17pts, 10 assts & 5' 9" senior shooting guard Shane Denully 25 pts 10 assts carried the scoring load.'  1/17/05 John P Miciotta: 'The 6th annual Martin Luther King Basketball Challenge at L.I.U.  In the opener for Our Savior Lutheran ... coach Oswald Cross received important contributions from senior Shane Donnelly and freshman Ivy Fisher who handled the ball well down the stretch and made enough plays along with 6'4" junior lefty Nick Murphy to secure the win.'

Allen Forbes 6'2 center St Raymond Bronx, NY  8/04  Allen has decided to attend St Raymond this year where he'll team with fellow Gaucho, Daryl (Truck) Bryant. 8/30/02 JPM: 'Allen is the younger brother of All Hallows' forward, Albert and like his brother is a superior interior player.  Allen plays for the Gauchos with Jonathan Riggs.  He is a good post passer and can handle the basketball.   3/03 GB # 6.

Jon Francois 6'6" St. Mary's (LI)  5/11/05 John P Miciotta: Updates to class of 2008 list. 'According to the coaching staff at St. Mary's, Jon has not played a lot of basketball. He does however belong somewhere on our secondary list because of his tools. He's long and thin, can run the floor and is improving catching the ball. He might not have an impact for the Gaels next season, but has a chance to develop into a very good player with continued hard work.'

Kareem Green, a 6'4 forward, Thurgood Marshal Academy, NYC. 6/17/05 Abdu Torrence, Thurgood Marshall Academy head coach: 'Kareem Green, a 6'4 270 wide body big man who is very good in the post and has a soft touch behind the arc. He plays with Ct Select 16's. He was a partial starter for me this year averaged 6pts and 6 rebs during the season. He made All tournament at URCS holiday tourney.'

Matt Grogan 6'3" Archbishop Molloy (Queens)  5/11/05 John P Miciotta: Updates to class of 2008 list. 'He came to the Stanners from the traditionally strong CYO program at St. Margaret's in Queens. He's an outstanding shooter with a nice floor game. Molloy has some depth at his wing position but he may be too good to keep off the varsity as a soph.'

Steven Hevalow 6'4, PF Gallaway NJ Township Middle  3/31/03 Hoop Scoop Top 7th graders from Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey (class of 2008 ) # 8 Steven Hevalow..

Nigel Henderson 5-10 forward Brooklyn NY..

Regulus Hoyte 5'10 center Brooklyn NY.  8/30/02 JPM: 'Regulus is physically mature (limited growth potential?), he plays well near the basket, has some handle, is athletic and a solid rebounder.'  3/03 GB # 11.

George Jackson 6'0 guard, St Dominic, LI. 4/8/05 Coach Ron Pavinelli: 'George Jackson is a 6'0 slashing guard with quick athlete who can shoot, finish and has a nice mid range game. Needs to get under control on offense. Is also a great rebounder and defender for his size.'

Sean Kilpatrick 6'3" wing, White Plains HS. 6/15/05 Coach Rob Rizzo, Westchester Haws 15's: ':Sean Kilpatrick, our 6'3" swing man, continues to improve.  He is athletic, strong, and can be an outstanding defender when he puts his mind to it.  If he continues to mature, he will have a breakout season for White Plains HS this year.'  6/05 Sean is playing for the Westchester Hawks' 15's at the Rumble in the Bronx.

Landrus Lewis 5'4 2008 PG Pennsauken NJ   3/31/03 Hoop Scoop Top 7th graders from Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey (class of 2008) #19 Landrus Lewis.

Brian Katz guard St Dominic LI.  4/8/05 Coach Ron Pavinelli: Brian Katz is a 6'2, strong, shooting guard and one of the best shooters with great range in the NY/LI freshmen class. Needs to work on quickness, ballhandling and defense.'

Eric Kessler, guard Shawnee, NJ.   4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Eric Kessler. 'Kessler hit many big shots for the Renegades this year. He is as tough as they come and isn’t afraid of the big stage. Shawnee should make noise next year in South Jersey and Eric will play a big part.'

Alex Maharaj, 5'2 guard, NYC.  6/12/02 Louis Xifaras: 'Alex has great basketball knowledge. He has a great passion for the game and is always a ferocious defender. His sweet jumpshot and quick handle makes him a tough player to guard. Alex is currently playing for the Queens RimRockers.'  3/03 GB # 21.

Lamont Middleton 5'5 guard Bronx NY.  3/03 GB # 7.

Dejuan Miller 6-4 forward Metuchen, NJ.  4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Dejuan Miller. 'He scored 20 points or more on several occasions this season. The 6’4 forward has long arms and plays very hard. I look forward to seeing his progress the next few years.'

Georgio Milligan 6-1 wing Don Bosco Prep, NJ.  6/16/05 Mr. T. Brown (family friend and former coach):  'Led his freshmen team to he NJ Championship. Stands 6'1 combo guard. can shoot the mid range jumper, a slasher to the bucket, relentless defender, sees the floor at the one and plays the two with equal depth ness. Georgio has a strong body, which comes into play when Kenny P. plays the 15u up at Metro Hawks. Georgio has been with the Hawks since the age of 10 and has remained loyal since his commitment. Georgio starts at the 2 for the Hawks AAU traveling team, often overlooked but never underappreciated as a up an coming rising sophomore. In fact Georgio was selected and played in the Reebok Right bounce Showcase. Georgio had a strong showing in the rising sophomore game that featured the likes of Curtis Loving, Darryl "Truck' Bryant, Sylvan Landesberg, ReggieDavis, David Imes, Ring Ayeul, Dave Johnson Jr, Byron Freeman, Trinity Fields and Nasir Robinson. Georgio was selected out of over 200 players in the Southesast Region. In fact Georgio set the tone early in the game with two slashing lay ups, over the outstretched arms of high flying Curtis Loving.  In should be further noted that Georgio is an honor student at Don Bosco another variable often overlooked or never mentioned when we rank these athletes. However, a true scout/college recruiter will inquire and when they do make an inquiry about Georgio he'll shine brightly with his 93.5 GPA.  This young man's parents have partnered quite well in bringing forth to the basketball fraternity a true student athlete, who has more then made his mark in the annals of this basketball fraternity here in the Metro region,  Georgio is preparing for summer league play, competing on the Varsity at team camp with DBP's Ironmen's varsity team and playing quite well, proving to the coaches that he is hungry for a spot on the Varsity team come this fall.'

Darius Mitchell  6-2 forward Westchester, NY.

Sam Mushman 6-6 guard Pope John, NJ. 4/1/05 NJO: West Jersey season in review -- Top freshman: Pope John's Sam Mushman will be one to watch next season. The 6-6 guard was a consistent scoring threat for Pope John (9-13), averaging 11.5 points over the second half of the season.

Mike Nattis  5-6 guard Friends Academy.  Coach Tom Rottkamp: 'The 5'6" guard out of Long Island Mike Nattis, will be playing at Friends Academy.  He is a quick guard, who is able to get into the lane and finish over the trees. He is already playing at a varsity level and will play with Friends Academy throughout the summer. He has a solid jumpshot, to go with great ball skills. He  plays AAU under Tyrone Green in Queens N.Y and will be competing all summer throughout NYC. It is definitely appropriate to add his name to this prominent players list.   7/20/04 Coach Tom Rottkamp: 'You have forgotten to include Mike Nattis to the class of 2008 top players. He is an incredible shooter and great ball handler. He plays for Long Island Lightning Harkins. He will be attending Syosset high school in the coming year and looks to be a premier high school player. Mike is a 5'4 guard he plays either point or shooting guard. I coached him during a spring league a couple of weeks ago and he competed very well against the level of competition that was out there. He avg 19 points per game with 4 or 5 assists per game. He plays AAU with LI Lightning (Harkins) and also competes very well there.'

Mike Nelson 6'0 center Collegiate NY  3/03 GB # 2. 10/27/04 Raymond Voelke: 'Mike Nelson attends Collegiate School.'

Joe Nuss 6'2" Christ the King (Queens)  5/11/05 John P Miciotta: Updates to class of 2008 list. 'He is first and foremost a fine outside shooter, but his ability to give the Royals more than that made him an important part of their freshman title run. He took good care of the ball when teams paid special attention to Erving Walker and was able to lend a hand on the boards when needed.

Rodney Parrish 5'8 point guard Paul VI, NJ.  12/3/04 Hoop Scoop: Top Philadelphia/South Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania 9th graders: # 10 Rodney Parrish 5'8.

Jabbar Singletary 5'4 point guard Bronx NY IS 158.  8/30/02 JPM: 'Jabbar plays wing for the Gauchos. He's a good shooter and an impressive defender, especially on the press where he's quick and focused on defense.'  3/03 GB # 9.

Prentice Small 5'4 point guard Brooklyn NY.  8/30/02 JPM: 'Prentice plays for SONDAY.  He has point guard's size but a two guard's skills and mentality.  Prentice is a scorer with a soft, nice touch mid-range jumper and he can be strong in traffic.'  3/03 GB # 16.

Nyrahn Smith, guard Asbury Park, NJ. 4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Nyrahn. 'The coach for the Blue Bishops took a chance on Smith and it paid off. Nyrahn is fundamentally sound and probably shoots the ball better than any other point guard in this class. Smith is focused and works on his game daily. Expect big things from this kid.   4/1/05 NJO: Monmouth County season in review -- Frosh flash: Asbury Park's Nyrahn Smith averaged 14 points and proved to be a terrific shooter, sinking as many as five 3-pointers in a game while playing both guard positions. "I threw him in the fire and didn't think he'd be able to handle it," coach Barry Baity said. "I became comfortable giving him big minutes. I was overwhelmed."

James Southerland 6-4 forward Cardozo Queens, NY. 11/9/04 Coach Ron Naclerio: 'Our two promising freshmen are 5-6 point guard Vincent Scott and 6-5 forward James Southerland. Each could make the varsity this season.'

Joe Swift 5-7 guard Boys & Girls Brooklyn NY. 6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'Joe is the third guard in a dynamic Gauchos’ backcourt at that level (15u) that includes the  Theodore and St. Ray’s Truck Bryant who is already well known to our readers.  Joe’s smart and quick with the dribble and a pesky defender.  His shooting hasn’t been consistent but he shows good form so it may improve as he gains strength.'  11/22/04 Cheez Ezenekwe, Boys & Girls assistant basketball coach: ' I'd like to introduce a freshman who we feel could be the next Tyrell Cruz. He's 5' 7" Joseph "JoJo" Swift .'

Jordan Theodore  6’0” PG  Patterson Catholic HS (NJ)  6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'Jordan plays for the Gauchos in the summer and that’s where we’ve seen him most.  He’s an outstanding outside shooter who passes and penetrates smartly.  He’s not strong yet but he does a nice job guarding the ball using his long arms, quick feet and fast hands.'

Matt Triosi 6'4" Xaverian (Brooklyn)   5/11/05 John P Miciotta: Updates to class of 2008 list. 'Lefthander who came to Xaverian from my old parish Good Shepherd in Brooklyn's Marine Park section. He scores inside thanks to pretty good feet and very good hands. He'll also surprise teams with a pretty good outside shot. Because of the depth in the Clippers' program he will likely play  JV this fall. Make no mistake though, he's a good player who will make an important contribution to the varsity Clippers in the future,'

Ian Umpierre 5'6 point guard Bx NY PS 181  Ian played like a veteran and ran the show for the Lightning. He penetration skills caused problems for opposing guards all weekend.  6/04 Ian was listed as St Raymond for the Eastern Invitational roster.   8/30/02 JPM: 'Ian's game is similar but a notch below that of Erving Walker. Ian is a solid point, a good dribbler, a penetrator and a great ballhawk on defense.  Ian is usually poised and under control on the court.  With additional growth and strength he'll be a fine high school player.'

8/02  Ian is part of coach Craig (Cat) Keyes 80 Park juggernaut which includes Vinny Natal and Malik Boothe.  Ian's father is the 80 Park assistant coach and brothers Chris and Justin play high school ball. 3/03 GB # 3.

Mark Wynovsky 6’4” PF Archbishop Molloy HS ( Queens6/15/05 John P Miciotta: 'Mark is a strong player who thrived around the basket at freshman level.  He’s also got great hands and a soft touch that helped him score with his back to the basket and facing up from 15’ and in.  He is also a heady defender and passer in the mid and high post.'

News:

7/17/05  Keith Daniels: 'I checked out the 2008 page and I didn't see Khalid Battle (St. Patrick, NJ) there last year or this year. I believe he should be. He's talented and knows the game and how it should be played. The kid can shoot and play hard noise defense.'

6/27/05 Coach Rock Eisenberg: 'At Tilden High School we have one of the best young 15 year old soph. players around. His name is Rito Joseph and he had a small coming out party at the super Vilanova team camp last week. Rito, a 6' 5" wing was our MVP and worked hard at both ends of the court all weekend. If he continues to play at this level all the people in the "Know" will feel pretty foolish in the not too distant future. At this time Rito and our 6' 9" junior, Alanzo George have not been invited to any of the "Big Time" camps but what a mistake! Part of the reason is that Rito did not play AAU ball this spring to try and concentrate on improving his grades, which he did. As far as Alanzo who is one of the two or yhree best young men I have ever had the privilege to coach your guess is as good as mine. Last year Greg "Shoes" Vetrone was nice enough to add him to the Camp "Next" program and we appreciated it very much. I hope the people making these decisions will consider adding these two great kids to one of their events.'

6/15/05 Coach Rob Rizzo, Westchester Haws 15's: 'The Westchester Hawks U15 Select have had an outstanding spring season. ... Ray Mitchell (White Plains) is our best defender.  At 5'8", he plays like the "Energizer Bunny", making life miserable for opposing guards.  Kevin Williams' strength (New Rochelle), Ketema Brooks' unselfishness (Mt. Vernon), and Alex Gulotta's shooting (Briarcliff) each provide us with a different look at point guard.  Kevin Drew (John Jay - Cross River) is an outstanding athlete who is a great on ball defender and fearless penetrator.  Sharrod Wright (Mt. Vernon) has recently joined our team after dominating on the 14 year old level.  He is an explosive rebounder with offensive skills that seem to get better every day. Corey Ellis (Beacon) and Tyler Richards (Tappan Zee) are both 6'6".  They continue to develop and are being counted on more and more to provide quality front-line depth.  Finally a word about Trent Bronner, a 6'1"  forward (Sleepy Hollow). This young man is a coach's dream.  He covers both post and perimeter players, never complains about anything, is always on time, and shows tremendous maturity and leadership.  What Trent lacks in size, he makes up for in effort and heart.  These 12 players have provided me with my most enjoyable AAU season as a coach.  I thank them for theireffort and respect.'

4/28/05 Metro Hoops All Freshmen Team includes Ashton Gibbs, Travon Woodall, Desmond “Solitary” Wade, Andre Birdsong, Dave Johnson, Nyrahn Smith, Eric Kessler, Eugene Teague, Jerrell Lewis and Dejuan Miller.

2/6/05 John P Miciotta: 'The class of '08 list must include Brian Cummings of Sheepshead Bay High in Brooklyn. He has averaged 10 points per game playing for Roy Stienbach's team, has good length and knows his way around the basket. With continued maturity and experience he could well be one of the best players in this class.

According to informed sources talented point guard Sasha Brown is currently enrolled at St. Andrews High in Rhode Island.

Also according to sources Dorvel Carter has transferred from St. Ray's to Rice.'

10/9/04 Brian Johnson: 'I was looking at the list of the top 39 (Class of 2008) players in the region and I noticed some players my son - Chris CJ Johnson - played against or was on the team with. Chris played IS8 with Suffolk County coached by John Albano in September. He held his own scoring 8 pts. in the last game. At 14 years old (5'11+"), the baby on the court, and playing with seniors, he handled the rock against some heavy pressure. He was on the varsity as an eighth grader and is looking forward to running the point as a freshman. CJ is quick, has a nasty handle, can shoot the rock, and will fight you in a game of checkers. He trains under Jerry Powell from North Babylon.'

8/19/04 Philip Evans: 'Frosh Travis Evans 6'1, from Franklin Township N.J. is heading to the town's high school. Travis is the leading rebounder, shot blocker and minutes played on his team. The hard nose, bring you pail to work type of player makes smart decisions for his team. usually plays against bigger guys but is never out played. He always plays within the team concept . Truly one young man who in enjoys the art of rebounding and still scoring at least 10 points per game.'

8/4/04 Coach Ben Asher, LI Aces: 'As of right now, the Butler twins, William and Brandin (spelled with an e, not o) will be attending Floral Park HS, but that may change.'

7/14/04  KGMG798: 'Please include Matt Grogan 6'3" Archbishop Molloy...class of 2008. Matt is playing with Queens Gale Force and LIL Fenton 14u (Island Garden)...also will play with Woodside Fighting Phoenix 14U the rest of the summer. He went to IS 119 and played St Margaret's CYO.'

7/14/04  vcastro@sfmarcus.com: 'You forgot to include Jordan Marcus. The 5"8 PG averaged over 35ppg and 7 assists while leading his Solomon Schechter Middle School team to a undefeated record against tough public school competition. Then in the spring, the 14 year old averaged double figres while starting for the loaded NJ Roardrunners 15U team/'

7/13/04 Rob Williams - Bistate Pythons & NYC Heat: 'Trinity Fields, who I've mentioned before, has been competing successfully against the top guards on this list and should be included. He is returning to the Nationals once again as a LI Lightning with his partner Justin Newton. Several of the top big men are inquiring as to his school of choice, as they want to run with him. He has been accepted to St. Mary's, Holy Cross as well as Cardozo where his parents and brother attended. "Triny" and Justin will be running with Lamar's program next year, as long as their schoolwork remains as it has.'

6/28/04 Coach Ben Asher, LI Aces: 'Here are some players you should add for the class of 2008:

Matt Cajuste - 6'5 forward. Matt plays for the Long Island Lightning (Lyons) He will be going to nationals with them and is their best player. He can do everything. Only weakness right now is toughness. He needs to get his weight up and start to play bigger. He can shoot, dribble, pass and score. He is a very good player.

Mookie Jones - 6'7 forward. Mookie is headed to nationals with the Westchester Hawks. He is a very very talented complete player. He's very long and very athletic. He can bring the ball up the floor, shoot threes, or dunk in your face. He is from Peekskill but is just as talented as any player from the city.

Daryl (Truck) Bryant. He is the star of the Gauchos 14U team. He was their leading scorer in the D1 Regional Championship aganct Team Next with 10 points. He is a 5'11 small forward with a killer pull up jumper. Daryl is either going to Rice or Poly Prep. But I think hes leaning toward Rice.

Roberto Lyons: 5'5 pg. "Berto" is one of the quickest players in all of New York. He played on the 14U Long Island Lightning-Fenton team which won D2 regionals. He was their leading scorer in the tournament with 25 in the semi-final aganct Venom Sports and 13 in the championship against Lightning-Katz. Roberto is going to Glen Cove HS out on Long Island.'

6/19/04 And 1 rosters listed the following freshmen: 5-4 Kaseem Harris, 5-10 Marlou Zamaira and 6-2 Hermino Rodriguez (Bellville), 6-0 Ryan Kloss (Bridgewater Raritan), 5-10 Will Flannery and 6-0 Bobby Brown (Elizabeth), 6-0 Walik Ingram  (Irvington), 5-0 Desmond Wade (Linden), 5-9 Dugan Leonard (Newark Central), 5-11 Jordan Theodore (Paterson Catholic), 6-0 Ryan Peters (Red Bank), 5-10 Deshawn Brown and 5-10 Al Blackmon (Shabazz), 6-1 Eric Kessler and 6-2 Doug Holcolme (Shawnee), 6-4 Leonard Liriano and 6-8 Frederique Dominguez  (St Benedict), 6-1 Colin Meany and 6-3 Chris Cervese (St Lukes - Chris will be an 8th grader!), 6-4 John Waddleton and 6-5 Jamin Shumate (St Patrick) and 6-1 Dakell Glenn, 6-1 Sheldon Killebrew and 6-2 Demetrius Porter (Westinghouse).

6/3/04 George Fontan: 'Travon Woodall is a 5-11 guard, forward and is a very shooter and ball handler. He led the Jersey City Boys Club to the 2004 New Jersey state championship. Travon went to the Top 100 Clinic and was on the same team as his good friend, Ashton Gibbs, and overshadowed him. He will attend St Anthony next year.

I also feel that one of the most underrated 8th grade PG in the Tri-state area is my son, Jio Fontan. He also plays for the New Jersey State champion Jersey City Boys Club and is also going to be attending St. Anthony's next year. He is what you would call a real point guard . If you watch him play you would think that he is already in high school.  His leg is broken but we are geting him ready for a great comeback for the Team Next Tournament.'

6/1/04 Joel Shapiro Head Boy Basketball Coach M.S.x113 (Bronx Middle School Basketball Champions 2002-2003 & 2003-2004): 'In looking at your rankings I find it amazing there is no mention of Kaseem Carr. Kaseem has led his team school, M.S113 to back to back Bronx Public Middle School Basketball Championships. As a seventh grader he was first team all star and this year league MVP. He averaged 32ppg, 8asst, 7reb a game. He is an excellent distributor of the basketball and he can score at will. He has tremendous range on his jump shot and a lightning quick first step. As good as he is on offense he just as good on the defensive end. He plays for the St.Charles Mustangs. This past summer he dominated his age group at the Pocono Invitational basketball camp during Bobby Hurley week. They moved him out of the seventh grade division and put him with high school seniors. His team went to the finals. Kaseem chose Mt. St Michaels Academy over All Hallows and Our Savior of Lutheran. Keep your eyes out for this kid, he is incredible.'

5/7/03 This alphabetical listing of 26 of the top class of 2008 players was compiled by referencing Gameball and  Hoop Scoop and by watching play at IS8,  UDC, Gauchos and Citywide. John P Miciotta, t-bone and others on this site contributed to the profiles and player evaluations, but we won't rank this class until after freshman year. These players are mostly New York City kids, who play for the Church, the Gauchos or other prominent AAU clubs. This listing should be taken very, very lightly. 7/17/03 Thomas White: 'South Jersey top 7th grader - Justin Breaker. I have coached the game of basketball at the varsity level for 19 years as well as being an athletic director for 10 years. I have seen many great athlete come thru the Delaware Valley. This past weekend I had the opportunity to see Justin Breaker in action in a Junior Varsity league at Highland High School in South Jersey. This young man is the real deal. He can score as well as defend. This kid will be a lottery pick one day. If you have not had the opportunity to see him play your missing he is rare talent. This kid is the best seventh grade player I have seen play in a long time. Justin is playing with Glassboro High junior varsity team.  He is in the same class as other Delaware Valley standout athletes --  to name a few Kobe Brayant, Rip Hamilton, Dajuan Wagner, Al Harrington and Lou Row.'

7/17/03 tbone: 'Desmond Wade . Linden 5'8 PG.. Member of the 4 time NJ State AAU Champs Linden Flames. Desmond has put on shows at the AAU nationals that has put his name on a few list for players to watch. He is going to E-Port Middle School for 8th grade Prep.

7/13/03  Tony Taylor Sr: 'I will add that there is another kid that has been overlooked. He currently plays for Unique Allstars at Little Rucker 12U. He also is on the Westchester UDC team 12U. He is a true point guard, and you should ask many players / coaches about him. You can ask Mike Moore, Coach Harper. They have all seen this kid play. He currently plays 14U under VenomSports for Nike Shoosh. He just came back from the Nationals while playing with the Westchester Hawks 13U. The kid's name is Tony Taylor, and he is one of the top guards in Westchester and the NYC for 2008.'

7/7/03 Anthony Clayburn: 'I coach the 7th & 8th grade travel team in Burlington Township and also various summer league teams. Andre Birdsong (completed 7th grade @ Holbein Elementary) from Mount Holly, NJ ... played for the New Jersey All-Stars and the New Jersey Prep Kings travelling team. 10/21/02 This alphabetical listing of 13of the top class of 2008 players was compiled by referencing Gameball and  Hoop Scoop and by watching play at IS8,  UDC, Gauchos and Citywide. John P Miciotta and others on this site contributed to the profiles and player evaluations, but we won't rank this class until after freshman year. These players are mostly New York City kids, who play for the Church, the Gauchos or other prominent AAU clubs. This listing should be taken very, very lightly.
