Class for 2011

6/25/06 Abdu-Allah Torrance: 'Tavon Sledge is in the class of 2011.'

Patrick Grady: 'Ta’von Sledge, Davontay Grace are 7th graders currently.'

6/28/05 This alphabetical listing of 20 of the top class of 2010 players was compiled by referencing Hoop Scoop and by watching play at IS8, UDC and ProStyle.  John P Miciotta and others on this site contributed to the profiles and player evaluations, but we won't rank the players this class until after their freshman year. These children are mostly New York City, northern New Jersey kids, who play for the Metro Hawks. Playaz, Team Next, LI Lightning or other prominent AAU clubs. This listing should be taken very, very lightly. These players are children, most will grow another foot or more. Listing them here is primarily a reason to profile currently prominent players from this class in one place on this site.  If you're not on this list but should be, count yourself lucky; keep practicing and studying. For comments and suggestions please email nycnjhoops@aol.com.

Kyle Anderson, Miles Davis, Corey Edwards, Tyrone Garland. Sterling Gibbs, Derrick Gordon, Davontay Grace, Sean Grennan, Justin Harris, Tyler Harris

Tyrone Johnson, Raymond Logan, Miles Mack,  Winston McLeod, Mark Parisi, Shaquille Pearson, David Rucker, Ta’von Sledge, Da'Shawn Suber, Shaquille Stokes, Maurice “Doo Wop” Watson.

Kyle Anderson 5'5 wing Fairlawn, NJ  Hoop Scoop # 134 nationally. 3/2/05 Terence T-Bone Johnson: 'Both Miles Davis and Sterling Gibbs play along with Kyle Anderson (Fairlawn NJ) with the MSU Skyliners and the LI Lightning. Kyle is a smooth ball handler that gets to the cup well also.'

Miles Davis, NJ  11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders - 'The 11 year old moves and jump shot is as the singers music. Davis kept Jersey in the game stroking the three ball and scoring in traffic. Miles has tremendous confidence and feel for the game. His name should be one to remember on the future.'

Corey Edwards 5'3  point guard, Juice All Stars, NYC. 1/21/05 Metro Hoops: 'MLK Classic Recap - 6th Grade Division -- Edwards runs the show for TN, he doesn’t look to score instead he concentrates on rebounding and leading the fast breaks. Corey’s court vision sets him apart from any other 6th grader I have seen.' 11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders. Edwards has the game with some size thrown in. Corey might turn out to have the best up side of the trio. Edwards had enough handle and court vision to lead many of the fast breaks against the smaller guards. Instead of scoring Edwards used his size to spoon feed the other players for easy buckets.  6/22/04 Coach James Black: 'The 6th grade team of the Juice Allstars has been having an excellent spring winning many tournaments.  Just last week we won Tim Thomas Playaz BlowUp for the 6th grade. ... playing great was Corey Edwards who always makes the game look so easy. One of the greatest defenders on the 6th grade level.'  5/03 Corey played for Coach Cat Keyes and the Rise Panthers at Pro-Style Y2K-3.

Tyrone Garland 5’0 guard Corey Erving, NJ. 1/21/05 Metro Hoops: 'MLK Classic Recap - 6th Grade Division 'Garland ran the backcourt with Watson and did it well. He has good court vision and hits the open jumper consistently. He loves to get out in the open floor and make something happen for his teammates.'

Sterling Gibbs 5'5 point guard Scotch Plains, NJ  11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders. 'Yes that Gibbs, the younger brother of NJ’s #1 frosh will soon make a name for himself. Gibbs displays the handle, power and uncanny court vision. Sterling biggest asset might be his will to win.'  3/13/04 Hoop Scoop: Nation's top 55 5th graders (class of 2011) includes from our region # 19. Sterling Gibbs

Derrick Gordon, NJ  6/14/05 Metro Hoops Junior Allstar Camp Recap 6th Grade -- 'Gordon scored from the perimeter and while driving to the hole. He is developing into a legit wing player.'   6/2/05 Team NJ Elite Wins Title - Metro Hoops MDI Recap 12U Division 'Derrick Gordon pumped in a game high 28 points and Tyrone Johnson added 12 markers as Team NJ Elite defeated the Connecticut Basketball Club 60-32 to win the 12 and Under title.' 11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders.- Playing the big man role Gordon crashed the boards recklessly. He snatched down 18 caroms with 15 points to lead NJ. Gordon was just too physical for New York’s interior. Derrick also ran the floor with the guards and finished layups strong.

Davontay Grace 5'9 PF Brooklyn (JHS #258) NY. HS # 15 nationally.  5/5/03 Pro-style, 2003 In the championship game the Church ran off to 20 - 4 first quarter lead and coasted to a 43 - 20 win over Team Roc behind their MVP, Devantay Grace (pictured left).  He brought new meaning to the old phrase 'grace period'. For the Hawks it was the first, second and third when he scored most of his game high 25 points. For Team Roc it was the fourth when Riverside's coach Paul Suber finally rested his star. This Grace is a lot more amazing than the Mets.

Sean Grennan 5'3 guard Seagirt, NJ  2/27/05 Hoop Scoop's ranking of the nation's top 150 6th graders includes  # 63. Sean Grennan 5'3.

Justin Harris, Playaz center. 6/6/05 Playaz Club Blow Up, 2005: The Playaz sixth grade center, Justin Harris, had a strong game in a losing effort.

Tyler Harris Unique All Stars   6/14/05 Metro Hoops Junior Allstar Camp Recap 6th Grade -- - The younger brother of Tobias seems to be following in his brother footsteps. Harris has a good understanding of the game and launched a couple of left handed bombs from the outside.

Tyrone Johnson guard Team NJ Elite.  6/14/05 Metro Hoops Junior Allstar Camp Recap 6th Grade -- - 'The lanky guard got out in the open floor while pushing the rock and setting teammates up for some nice dimes. He also shot the ball well from the perimeter which opened up penetration opportunities. Johnson’s game picked up while watching Gibbs perform. He began to create opportunities to score for himself and teammates. He made a strong run at Gibbs for top guard honors.'

Raymond Logan 4'6 guard, Team Roc.  2/22/05 Metro Hoops: 'In the championship game NY Select of Harlem defeated the Panthers 58-40. Raymond Logan stole the show for Select with 16 points while Dwayne Foreman added 8 for the winners. The southpaw (Raymond) has game and court savvy beyond his years. He is a natural leader on the floor and has a killer instinct. Logan loves pushing the rock and either scoring or dishing to teammates for buckets.' 8/04  Raymond is pictured here with his Sportsmanship Award as the Team Roc superbiddy MVP at UDC this summer. His team lost in the championship to the LI Lightning, Dingle team. His 14.0 ppg. was second only to Daniel Dingle for their division. Raymond is a clever lefty off guard with a nice shot a great drive to the basket.

Miles Mack, NJ   11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders.- 'Mack is a future floor general. He excels at pushing the rock and delivering it to an open teammate. You can’t help but love this kids’ unselfish tendency. He was a joy to watch.'

Winston McLeod, 6-0 forward Metro Hoops.  6/6/05 Playaz Club Blow Up, 2005 -- Abdu Torrence: 'Winston was his usual talent, A box in one was applied to Winston McLeod in the second half which shut him down.'   2/27/05 Hoop Scoop's ranking of the nation's top 150 6th graders includes  # 25. Winston McCloud 6'1 WF Brooklyn, NY.

Mark Parisi 5'1 point guard Queens, NY. 5/10/04 Mark played for the Abyssinian Superbiddies at ProStyle this spring and was usually their leading scorer.  6/21/03 Louis Xifaras: 'The Queens RimRockers 12U Boys team fell to Team Roc today in UDC, however it was the strong RimRocker debut of 9 year old Mark Parisi that has gotten the attention. Mark scored 15 points and really held his own against players 3 years older than him. Markie has an unbelievable jump shot for his age, and really sees the floor well for a 9 year old. Look for this kid in the future to be the next big time scoring point guard coming out of New York City. I'm not just trying to hype this kid up, you can ask super biddy or biddy coaches around the area about him and they will all tell you.'   6/25/03 Louis Xifaras: 'Queens RimRockers Boys 12U ... again the story of the day was 9 year old Mark Parisi, who had 17 points with 3 three-pointers. Markie's jumpshot has been hot lately and he is getting better playing on-ball defense.

Shaquille Pearson 5'4  point guard Queens, NY. 4/04 Shaquille played for the NYC Rise Panthers Superbiddy team at ProStyle this year, but his team lost in the second round to  Da'Shawn Suber's Riverside Hawks team.

David Rucker 5'5 point guard Galloway, NJ  2/27/05 Hoop Scoop's ranking of the nation's top 150 6th graders includes  # 111. David Rucker.  12/3/04 Hoop Scoop: Top Philadelphia/South Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania 6th graders: # 2 David Rucker..

Da'Shawn Suber 5'0  point guard NY.  7/4/04 Hoop Scoop: NYC # 1. 11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders. Dashawn Suber - The little lefty has the heart of a lion. He gets after people on defense and goes to the hole without worry. Suber’s determination to get the job done is unique for a 6th grader. He will make some high school very happy one day.  Da'shawn plays for his father, coach Paul Suber (pictured left). Originally that was for Riverside Church. These days it's for Team Next. According to his dad, 'Da'shawn is a point guard and shooting guard from Rockland County (Spring Valley), NY. He has very good vision, excellent shooter with outstanding range. Named top 10 yr. old at the Five Star Basketball Camp (8/03). He is 4'11.'

Ta'vaon (Dickerson) Sledge 5'2. 1/21/05 Metro Hoops: 'MLK Classic Recap - 6th Grade Division -- Sledge is the heart and sole of TN. He scores most of his buckets on uncontested lay ups, but if needed he can hit a clutch three or lockdown an opponent.' 11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders. 'Tavon Sledge -- The quick lead guard was unstoppable when going to the cup. Sledge possesses that star quality that many outside NY confuse with arrogance. Tavon led all scorers with 27 and took home MVP.'  5/3/03 Ta'von is the Gauchos Super biddy point guard. He led his team to the semis of Pro Style where they lost to the Church, despite his game high 12 point effort.

Shaquille Stokes 5'7, guard NY. 1/21/05 Metro Hoops: 'MLK Classic Recap - 6th Grade Division -- Shaq’s Ben Gordon type game carried to NYC squad. With his team down for most of the game Stokes took over in money time. Shaq hit three straight trey balls and made the crucial block to preserve the victory.'  12/3/04 Andre Calloway: 'Shaquille Stokes of Harlem, NYC is a special kid. Shaquille is the current star of the class of 2011. He is the best point guard in the city. He is definitely without a doubt one of the top 3 6th graders in the nation. Shaquille is a great finisher, he has a excellent handle, rarely turn the ball over, and can shoot the three with range. Also he will go after you on defense. Shaquille is known to give the crowd a show with the signature move the in-and-out.7/4/04 Hoop Scoop: NYC # 3.  11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders. Shaquille Stokes - The young boy can rock. Stokes kept the Jersey players dancing all night with a mean handle using both hands. His in and out crossover is something serious. Stokes seems to be the best finisher out of the trio.

10/27/04 Gauchos Roundball Classic 12’s All Tournament 1st Team -  Shaquille Stokes (Team ROC).  8/15/04 Shaq played point guard for the championship Team Roc biddies at UDC, so I presume he should be classified a grade higher. His team beat the Gauchos in the championship, 58-44.   2/29/04 IS8 Biddy division (12 and under)  -- The Gauchos' Shaquille Stokes (right) scored a game high 23 points and got the Sportsmanship award.  He may have been the best player on the court in the Biddy championship game and he single handedly kept his team in the game as the 'chos trailed only 29-22 at halftime.

Maurice “Doo Wop” Watson 4’9 guard Corey Erving, NJ. 1/21/05 Metro Hoops: 'MLK Classic Recap - 6th Grade Division -- If you want a feisty guard with nice skills look for Watson. Doo Wop gets it done on the floor and isn’t afraid of any opposition. Running the team like a true general Maurice answers the bell every time it rings.'

6/14/05 Metro Hoops Junior All Star Camp recap for 6th graders includes Sterling Gibbs, Tyrone Johnson, Derrick Gordon, Darryl Gordon and Tyler Harris.

6/2/05 Metro Hoops MDI Recap 12U Division 'Stokes once again proved why I feel he is the top 6th grader in the region. He is virtually unstoppable off the dribble and has a wet jumper. He pumped in big numbers in both tournament games. Sledge seems to have added a little bulk to his slender frame but it doesn’t take away from his blazing speed. Once he gets in the open court you can mark down two points in the books.  Suber the third member of TN’s lethal weapon three, plays ball hawks defense and slings deep treys from the corner. His is the quiet assassin of the trio.'

5/31/05 The New York Metropolitan AAU Championship games were played at Island Garden yesterday. The 12 under Team Next three guards (from left to right) are DaShawn Suber, Shaquille Stokes and T'von Sledge.

3/2/05 Terence T-Bone Johnson: 'Watchung Conference has 3 on the Hoop Scoop's 2011 -- Plainfield's Miles Davis, Elizabeth's Cheyenne Floyd and Scotch Plain's Sterling Gibbs are placed on Hoop Scoop Online's top 150 for the class of 2011. (I'm getting old). Sterling is currently listed on the new rankings at #14 nationally, Cheyenne #92 and Miles is #121. Miles attends Sacred Heart in South Plainfield and Sterling attends Terrill Middle. Both Miles and Sterling play along with Kyle Anderson (Fairlawn NJ) with the MSU Skyliners and the LI Lightning. Cheyenne plays with the Exclusive Playaz. Before long, Miles will be in the top 20 because no kid suppose to be able to shoot the rock the way he does. Sterling's rankings is noteworthy because I believe he could get to the basket vs 8th graders on the elite stage. Kyle is a smooth ball handler that gets to the cup well also. Cheyenne has court sense and can shoot well from the outside.

2/27/05 Hoop Scoop's ranking of the nation's top 150 6th graders includes # 5. Tavon Sledge 5'1 PG Spring Valley, NY  # 7. Shaquille Stokes 5'7 PG New York, NY # 13. 2/22/05 Metro Hoops: 'In the championship game NY Select of Harlem defeated the Panthers 58-40. Dwayne Foreman (NY Select) plays the big man role but his guard instincts are apparent. He dribbles with both hands and is very graceful around the basket. He should switch to his natural position once he gets older.'

12/12/04 Metro Hoops: Travis Price 6th Grade (Exclusive Players, Elizabeth)- Price is a strong and skilled ball handler. He can score at will on this level, but would rather pass and set up teammates.

Cheyenne Ford 6th Grade (Exclusive Players, Elizabeth)- Ford ran the offense for the Elizabeth squad. His penetration usually resulted in easy baskets for his teammates. Cheyenne got his points but leaking out for uncontested layups.

Anthony Scalfero 6th Grade (IHM, Scotch Plains)- Scalfero put IHM on his back and almost pulled off the upset. He led all scorers with 23 points. Anthony showed great patience to score his points within the team’s offense.

12/3/04 Hoop Scoop: Top Philadelphia/South Jersey/Eastern Pennsylvania 6th graders: # 2 David Rucker 5'2 point guard Galloway NJ.

11/27/04 Metro Hoops: Battle of The Bridge Recap - 6th Graders.

11/22/04 Terence T-Bone Johnson: 'They came, they saw, they won. The Top 6th, 7th and 8th graders from New York all came to win their games after trailing at the half Sunday at Paterson Catholic. The gym was filled with people from NY and NJ waiting, watching and wondering who was going to claim the Bridge. In the 6th grade game, NY players Tavon Sledge (27 pts), Shaquille Stokes (26 pts) and Deshawn Suber (17 pts) led the way for NY who pulled away from the NJ team at the end to win 73-65. New Jersey was led by Miles Mack (16 pts), Miles Davis (who I might add just turned eleven 4 days ago) 15 pts and MVP of the event Derrick Gordon (14 pts 18 rebounds).
