IS8 SUMMER Y2K
Spring 1998 Summer 1998 Fall 1998 Spring 1999 Summer 1999 Fall 1999 Winter Y2K Spring Y2K
Pete Edwards: 'IS8 -- address is 108-35 167 th St. Jamaica, Queens just off Merrick Blvd on 167 St and 108th Avenue.'
8/13/00 Peter F. Edwards: 'Championship Saturday went well at I.S.8. The Biddy division was won by 80 Park Sean Crawford was the MVP, J.Y.O. won the Midgets, Victor Morris was the MVP and the High School division was won by St. Marys where Matt Preston was the MVP.' Web note: Special thanks to Pete Edwards, Hassan Jennings and Anthony Caldwell for once again running a great tournament. The Fall IS8 Classic is tentatively scheduled for 24 or 28 teams beginning Wednesday, Sept 11th.
8/12/00 Steve on IS8 championships: 'In the Biddie championship, it was a game until hafetime with 80 Park taking a 15-10 lead. The second half was a totally different story. 80 Park held North Bab to just 1 point the entire second half and won by about 30. In the Midget game, Huntington lost by about 20 to JYO. The High School Championship was magnificent with Rise Above leading for most of the first 3 quarters before losing the lead late in the third stanza. St. Mary's finished strong and won the game. The St. Mary's team really is an excellent group of ballplayers who are coached extremely well.'
8/6/00 Next Saturday, 8/12 is IS8 championship day - for the Biddies, undefeated 80 Park will play north Babylon at 9:30, JYO will play Huntington midgets at 11:00 and the high school championship will match Rise Above vs. St. Marys at 12:30.
In this past week's high school playoff action, Wolfpack took the Queens Cobras as Lenny Cooke scored 37 and Curtis Sumpter had 10. Lenny was a no-show for the semis as Rise Above edged the Wolfpack 82-81. Curtis Sumpter had 17 in the losing effort. Lovell McMorris(24), Spoonie Harris(17), Greg(17), Cornell Woods(11) and Jerome (13) led the winners. St Mary took Huntington 80 - 64 as Ken Grant, Dwayne Bygeld, Matt and Brian Preston had 22, 19, 18 and 16 for the balanced winners. Deshawn Moore (19), Jimmie Hurt (15), Matt Klimkowski (12) and Aubin Scott (11) scored well for Huntington.
In this morning's Biddie matchups North Babylon edged the Rifles 43 - 39 after trailing by one at halftime. NB's Darren Duncan missed all four treys he tried, but he had 6 of his 8 points in the last quarter, while running the team from the point. Charles Jenkins and Rashid Green led NB with 12 and 10 points. The Rifles' Oshamar Gibbs had a game high 19 and Dante Jones had 12. Unique Stowe was a no-show and that was the difference for the Rifles.
In the second Biddie game undefeated 80 Park took Elmont 45 - 25. Hickman Simmons did not start for Park, but he led them with 12 points. S Wood, Sean Crawford and Wes Frederick had 10, 8 and 6.
In the first midget semifinal Wesley Wicks scored 38 points, including 8 of 10 from the line. It wasn't enough as JYO won 67 - 55. JYO's perimeter trio of point guard Dwayne Johnson (17), shooter John Ager (15 - Pete Edwards calls him 'Numbers'), and slasher Victor Morris (16 - entering the eighth grade this fall) with the center presence of Kevin Casey (6) was too much.
Huntington led the Rifles 37 - 21 at halftime and withstood a Ray Arnold charge in the last quarter to win 65 - 57. Ray Arnold, Trevon (Poppy) Hughes and Tyrone (Burger) Stowe had 21, 13 and 12 in the losing effort. Huntington's scoring came from Kevin Gholson (19), Matt Hahn (11), Clarence Alonzo (8), Sayeed Edmund (8), Chris Clay (7) and Steven Harney (7).
8/5/00 Midget quarterfinals @ IS8 today - form doesn't always hold as Ajax upsets the Skyriders 46 - 38, JYO trounces a listless Elmcor by 20, Huntington outlasts 1st Presbyterian 57 - 43 and the Springfield Rifles shoot down previously undefeated 80 Park 42 - 39. Biddie semis are at 9:30 and 10:30 tomorrow, Ajax vs. JYO and Huntington vs. Rifles at 11:30 and 12:30 for midget semis.
The first game was a shootout between Ajax star Osa Omagedun (21) and the Skyrider's Wesley Wicks (19). But Devon Darby of Ajax was the only other scorer in double digits (he had 10) and that was the difference.
The second game was a rout; JYO led 34 - 19 at the half and won going away. Phil Murphy was the Elmcor high scorer with 10, while JYO's star point guard, Dwayne Johnson finished with only five. But his buddies, Devon Anderson, John Ager, Victor Morris and Dave Brown had 16, 12, 11 and 8 in the easy win.
Huntington played the third game with only five players, but they were the right five - Clarence Alonzo (21), Kevin (Bone) Ghoulson (14), Steve Harney (8 points and two slick assists when things got tight in the fourth quarter), Tyson Miller (8) and Chris Clay (6). Reggie Lain led Presbyterian with 14, but Saiquon Stone was a no-show.
With 15 seconds left in the final gameTyrone (Burger) Stowe got a putback goal to break a 39 all tie. Then Trevon (Poppy) Hughes hit one of two free throws after a steal to seal the win. Ray Arnold was scoreless in the first half, but his 13 points in the second half was the difference. 80 Park was led by 18 from Will Ellison. Marcel (the Biz) Alston had an off-game with 7and Nick Flag had 6.
7/30/00 The biddie games were 80 Park over Elmont 34 - 26 and North Babylon edging the Rifles 46 - 44. Those teams will meet again in next Sundays semifinals at 9:30 and 10:30. Kevin Hannoway (8), S. Woods (8), Reynolds (6) and Riddick (5) were best for the 80 Park winners while Melvin Clarice was game high with 9 for the Panthers. In the second game Darren Duncan hit a trey with 25 seconds left to give North Babylon the victory. Darren is the younger brother of Mitchell Beauford, he's not yet 5' tall and is going into the sixth grade. His grandfather believes he's better than Mitchell at this stage, but we won't be mentioning the class of 2007 for a few years yet! Rashid Green, Roy Jimenez, Charles Jenkins and Trevor Costin had 14, 10, 8 and 8 for the winners. Unique Stowe led all scorers with 15 points and to quote Pete Edwards, 'Nique is doing it all, scoring, rebounds and defense.' Aliyah Davis (Gameball # 12) also had a breakout game. She scored 8 with at least that many rebounds. Dante Jones had 8 and Oshamar Gibbs had 8.
JYO's Dwayne (Dube) Johnson arrived for the game against the Running Rebels midway through the second period and by halftime his undefeated team trailed the winless Rebels 24 - 13. JYO won 54 - 38 going away. Dube had 11, John Ager 19, V Morris 10 and Devon Anderson 7 for the winners. Michael Dietz had 17 for the Rebels, 13 in the first half. Brian Geffin had 14 and played his usual strong game at the point. (According to Coach Ron Naclerio, Brian is headed for St. Francis Prep and Dube is heading for Cardoza.)
In the final game 4-1 Huntington trounced 1-4 Elmcor 74-49. Kevin Gholson is a 14 year old, soon to be eighth grader who plays the point for Huntington. He had 22 points today and we're adding him to the class of 2005 list. Mike Scalia, Clarence Alonzo and Chris Clay had 15, 13 and 11 for the winners.
Junior division quarterfinals will be Saturday, August 5th starting at 9:30. Semis will be the next day at 11:30 and 12:30, championship at 11:00 on Saturday, August 12th. 80 Park (4-0) and JYO (3-0) are the only undefeated teams left, but Huntington (3-1), the Skyriders (3-1) and First Presbyterian (3-2) have winning records.
The high school regular season is finished except for make-ups. Teams with winning records were Huntington (4-1), Skyriders (4-1), Amityville (4-1) Rise Above (3-1), St. Marys (3-1) and Modesto's Crew (2-1). Eight of ten teams make the playoffs. Quarterfinal games are this Tuesday and Wednesday evening, 6:30 and 8:00 with the semis on Thursday 6:30 and 8:00. Championship game is Saturday, August 12th @ 12:30.
7/29/00 The first biddie games is a forfeit; undefeated 80 Park (5 - 0) gets the walkover vs North Babylon, now 2 - 3. In the second game the Rifles (2 - 3) lead all the way against the Elmont Panthers. Unique Stowe topped the Rifle scoring with 14; Dante Jones, Oshamar Gibbs and Trevon Charles were close behind with 13, 12 and 9 points. Evan Thompson, Melvin Clarice and Josh Marshall had 12, 11 and 6 for the Panthers. The Biddie reular season ends with tomorrow's two games. The semis will be played on Sunday, August 6th @ 9;30 and 10:30, the championship on Saturday, August 12th @ 9:30.
7/16/00 The first Biddie game matched yesterday's losers as Elmont Panthers took it from North Babylon. The second game was for yesterday's winners and 80 Park led comfortably at halftime 17 - 9 before edging out a 35 - 33 win. Wesley Frederick hit the perimeter jumper with four seconds left to seal it for 80 Park. Once again Hickman Simmons, Sean Crawford and Kevin Hannoway helped 80 Park. Trevon Charles had a game high 12 for the Rifles while Oshamar Gibbs (6), Dante Jones (6) and Unique Stowe (5) had thier moments for the Rifles.
On a day when the Yankees won in extra innings, the first two IS8 midget games also went to overtime. The Rifles and JYO were tied at 46 after four but JYO won 60 - 51 going away. First Presbyterian and the Roadrunners were tied at 39 before First Presbyterian won 48 - 47. In the final game undefeated 80 Park (3 - 0) easily took winless Renaissance (0 - 3) 53 - 42.
First Presbyterian is missing Reggie Lain (at camp), but 15 from Saiquon Stone and 11 from Eugene Locker were enough in this low scoring affair. For the Roadrunners Brian Effin (4 points) did his usual great job of running the offense and center, Vishee Mandahar (10) with a newfound foul line jumper has greatly improved his game. The coach's son Ryan Eisner (13) tied it with a trey with less than 10 seconds in regulation but Michael Dietz had an off game with only five points. The game's key play was a called foul against Vishee on a Saiquon Stone drive in the waning moments of overtime Saquon hit one of two for the victory. He was recently rated by Hoop Scoop as the # 1 seventh grader, class of 2005, in the city, but he had an average game today.
The day's midget star was JYO's super smooth point guard, Dwayne Johnson (Hoops Scoop #10, class of 2004). His friends and teammates call him Dube; Pete Edwards calls him the General. Dube had 9 of his 22 points in the overtime frame and hit 10 of 11 foul shots for the game. With Ray Arnold, Trevone Hughes and Saiquon Stone there may have been better athletes in the IS8 gym today, but none were more effective than the General. Teammates David Brown and John Ager added 14 and 13. Center Kevin Casey had six and was a presence inside. Mike Bravo and Ray Arnold has 13 and 11 for the losers who were hurt by Trevone (Poppy) Hughes' sub-par six point effort.
7/15/00 Biddies play began this morning - schedule is filled in below with the midgets. In the second game 80 Park trounced North Babylon 47 - 14. The heroes for 80 Park were Hickman Simmons (17), Wes Frederick (10), Sean Crawford (9) and Kevin Hannoway (6). In the first midget game the NY Skyriders took the Rifle 54 - 44. The Rifles Trevon (Poppy) Hughes and Ray Arnold were helped by big Mike Bravo in the middle but it wasn't enough against Wesley Wicks, Kevin Spann, Robbie and Scott. Spann has recently moved to LI from Chicago. He will be playing in the 14 u AAU nationals with his Chicago team. In the second midget game Huntington edged the Renaissance Warriors 44 - 41. Matt Hahn's 16 point, many clutch in the final quarter, were the difference. Clarence Alonzo (11), Sayeed Edmund (6) and Steve Harney (5) added to the scoring. For the Warriors Jorge Pena and Andrew Chong each had 12 while Dante Dancey had 9.
