10/7/00 Five games at IS8 today and another five tomorrow will mean that only ten games remain in the regular 60 game season. In the early games today the Queens Cobras took Rise Above, Holy Cross beat the Hoop Street Gang 83 - 69 and the Panthers were leading FYA 40 - 25 at halftime. The Panther score is understandable given their stellar frontline - Carlos Linares, Kenny (Kato) Adeleke and Curtis Sumpter. Corey Cromer, Ontea Gates and Gary Irving took care of the perimeter play. In the second game Rob Epifania dominated with 26 while Sean Wallace, Miguel Gonzalez and Pierre Ward had 11, 11 and 10 for the Cross. Edane Barton was high for HSG with 25; Phillip Fleurey, Ryan Pehush and Tim Oswald scored 14, 12 and 12.
In games played this past week Lenny Cooke had 28 for the Wolfpack in their 67 - 50 win over the NY Skyriders. This past Thursday Grady shocked St. Raymonds Ravens 97 - 73 as the Falcons were up by 30 at one time in the first half. Julius Hodge had 32 but Michael Clarke scored 23 and Woody Souffant 19 for the winners. Bunky Reid took Huntington 57 - 49 as Keith Moorehead had 18 (10 in the last quarter) and Marcus Taylor 16 for the winners. Matt Ross had 8 and Dikhate Mouhamadou 19 for Huntington. Dikhate arrived late and all his points came in the second half.
10/7/00 Pete Edwards: 'Its starting to heat up at I.S.8. The weaker teams are being weeded out. The championship is (Sunday 10-22-00) at I.S.8.. Sebastian is the REAL THING! As long as he continues to work he will make us forget about a lot of the past McDonalds All-Americans. Sagari will be a lottery pick one day if he stays healthy and the Gauchos better recognize that and get him the ball a few times a game. Well gotta run to the gym.'
10/7/00 LFBALL: 'After a rough week at work I had to find something relaxing and enjoyable to do on Friday evening. Should I go out to dinner? How about a movie? Maybe a club or bar to have a drink and wind down? Well at the last moment I decided to visit IS8 to catch some great hoops. I knew that even if the games were bad, Pete Edwards would be entertaining. And he really was. Other thoughts from tonight:
What has happened to Hempstead's team. They did not bother to show up. Anyone remember that famous Hempstead press from years ago? How times have changed. Pretty soon they will be getting beat by Greatneck North.
Gauchos young and exciting team beat future PSAL runner up to Roberson, Lincoln HS from Brooklyn. Sagari Alleyne is a future lottery pick. Maybe right out of HS. Sagari if you are reading this please do not get a big head, you still have work to do.
Sabastian Tellefar is the real future. Great skills and court knowledge. Better listen to assistant Coach Craig Carter, he could teach you in absence of famous cousin.
Sabatian acts like a star. That is good and bad.
Donnie McGrath, this kid was the most talented player in the gym. NC, Duke, etc. This kid could be a top 10 or 20 player next season since he is only a junior. Donnie, you are the man. I am officially a fan. Your press clippings do not serve you justice. From this point on it is strictly Donnie as in Michael.
Gaucho coaches were excellent. Great presence and very little screaming. It helps that this group stays together as a unit.
Sagari? You are the man also. Chris Taft from Xavarian, you are one of the most talented 10th grade big guys I have seen in many years. You can be all you want to be. Marlon Smith- after watching numorous times I feel safe to say he is a player. How good? Rep could make him big time. Problem is moodiness could make him not as recruitable. But he can play the game of basketball. However, other kids are catching up. Who does Marlon Smith play for? Gauchos, Riverside, or the Tim Thomas Playaz?
Daon Merritt looked good in his tie from St. Raymond's. He knew it and kept it on all night
Sam Milniek from Lincoln would be a steal for any local college team except SJU Sam did all the things that do not show in the boxscore. He also scored around 22 points. Sagari wanted the ball so much he cursed at his teammates. Good sign regarding being aggressive. Northeastern was in gym looking for a point. Had a lot of choices.
If you want to see great ball, attend the playoffs. I will be there.'
9/30/00 Only three games at IS8 today and only 28 teams in the tournament as Jersey City Boys Club (mostly St. Anthony players) and Pro-Am AllStars from Philly have dropped out. Rock Steady Beacon took the Bro AllStars (that's Chris Taft and Lincoln's varsity team) 61 - 54. Shakeem Berry led Rock Steady with 18 while Rahim Acosta, Terrell McQueen and Ronald Williams had 14, 12 and 8 points. Sebastian Telfair hit four treys on 20 points, but Taft was ineffective all game.
In the second game JYO, aka Cardoza beat the Rimrockers, aka Longwood 81 -74. Their big three for JYO were Darryl Hill (22), Ryan Williams (17) and W Wells (13). For the Rimrockers Mark (Peanut) Hill had a game high 29 and Alex Bondeyer, Mark Kellman and David Terry scored 15, 9 and 8.
In the final game FYA won by one with a short jumper in the lane with 3 seconds to go.
9/30/00 Nathan Blue: ' IS8 - Youth Empowerment beat Boys & Girls HS. "The High" came in with the deadly combo of Amadou Fall and Johnny Carter. Both are in the top of their class in the city. Even though they played hard they just couldn't stop a guy who flew in from North Carolina: Roscoe Biggers! Roscoe had around 30 pts and played great. With Roscoe it formed the toughest backcourt in IS 8 which also had Rashawn Vaughn and Jeff Green, grandson of former Knick Jumpin Johnny Green. If Youth Empowerment wins it's next game we make the playoffs.'

9/14/00 Winston Kelly: 'News from IS 8 - There's a slight dropoff in the talent pool, but at IS 8 there will be very competative games. The drop off in the high number of elite players actually will make for better games. If you don't bring your "A" game you could be knocked off.
Anyway back to the games. Last night's contests at IS 8 featured the NY Ravens vs RealScouts "Youth Empowerment team. Empowerment got off to an early lead mid way through the first quarter and pretty much led most of the way with four (4) early monster dunks and steady play throughout Devon Neckles of Canarsie with 18 points and Norman Simmons of (?) and that's question, leading the way in scoring with 26 points. The NY Ravens never looked sharp, but they remained within striking distance and seized their opportunity early in the second half with an aggressive full court press. After missing many early swooping layups, Allen Ray came on strong down the streach with those same swooping layups that starting falling. It really was the steady play of All-American Julius Hodge and Chris McRae of St. Raymond's that kept them close throughout the game. Also contributions from Davonne Folks, Jamel Harper and Daon Merritt where integral during the middle quarters of the game. Final Score NY Ravens 88, Youth Empowerment 85
In the night ap in the battle of the Brooklyn Borough Grady HS vs Boys and Girls HS. In a game that dangled from 5 to 10 points throughout for Boys and Girls, it was Tommie Eddie that propelled B&G's with his raining threes and Amadou Fall pounding away on the interior. Grady remained close throughout due to point guard extrodiniare who had double figure assists (I stop counting at twelve (12)), contributions also came from junior star guard Quincy Doobie with 19 points and 10 points each from Michael Clarke and Woody Souffrant. Final Score Boys and Girls 64 and Grady 60.
Word has it that Junior Mikail Malik formally of Christ the King is attending school in the Wash. DC Maryland area with Sophomores Elijah Clark and Michael Robinson both formerly of Benjamin Bannecker. I am saddened to report that it is true that sophomore Michael King has transferred out Christ the King, I hope he keeps his head up. Look for 8th grade point guard sensation 5'7 Terry McKenzie of High School Academy to surface at the point guard factory (Christ the King) next year. Everyone is going to like him. Hey remember the name 5'7 Terry McKenzie. I'll also add lets hope he finally understands, that the BBall courts don't bring any real glory without some success in the classroom.'
9/13/00 Rich: 'Pete Edwards, the IS 8 league commissioner and former all-division guard at Edison HS and one-time division II powerhouse New York Tech, has assembled 30 teams for the 2000 IS 8/Nike Tip-Off Classic. The action started last night with Holy Cross HS defeating the Panthers, 56-55. Rebel defeated the B'ballers in the nightcap. Some of the more notable teams are the Panthers, St. Patrick's, FYA, Holy Cross HS, Gauchos, JYO, Bronx Ravens, Boys & Girls HS, Grady HS, Huntington Roadrunners, Rise Above, Wolfpack, Mount Vernon HS, Hempstead HS, Riverside Church (A) and (B), Rebel, Skyriders, and the B'Ballers (JFK HS in the Bronx). The playoffs are scheduled to begin on October 14 at 10am and championship Sunday will take place at 11am on October 22.'
