5/23/04 NY Hoops: Balance Leads Mt. Vernon Past Bingos All-Stars.
5/23/04 Freshman Brandon Walters (far left) and Phil Jones (far right) are the Juice big men who will be going up against Jonathan Mitchell (center) and the Mt Vernon Knights today. AJ Price (second from left) was brilliant yesterday in a losing effort for the Bingo All Stars but Derrick Caracter (second from the right) was never a factor in his team's four point loss. 5/22/04 It will be Mt Vernon vs. Juice at noon tomorrow for the IS8 championship as the Knights edged the Bingo All Stars 76 - 72 and Juice held on for a 106 - 97 win against the Playaz, last fall's champs. Mt Vernon began the game with a 7 - 0 start before the All Stars came back for a 36 - 35 halftime lead and then began the second half with a 15 - 2 streak. Other than that, the All Stars were better as A J Price had a game high 25, Devon Baker 14 and Arturo Dubois a respectable 13. Unfortunately, Derrick Caracter was held to 7 while the Knights got balanced scoring from Jonathan Mitchell (17), Keith Benjamin (16), Dexter Gray (13), Chris Lowe (12), Mike Coburn (8) and Shantay Robinson (6). Juice played withour Ramel Bradley (he had an online test to take but will be back tomorrow), led by one after the first period, outscored the Playaz 39 - 19 in the second for a comfortable 64 - 43 halftime lead. Then the fell asleep. It was 82 - 70 after three and 88 - 87 Playaz with 3:49 to play and their pont guard, Eugene Lawrence (12) fouling out. But Corey Fisher (22 points and 6 for 6 from the foul line in the last 1:40 for the fabulous freshman), Kojo Mensah (23), Stephen Jackson (15) and Marvin Roberts (12) took up the perimeter slack while Phil Jones (9) and freshman Brandon Walters (9) continued to control the boards to the very end. The Playaz' top six were Jordan Fowler (20 with four treys), Courtney Nelson (18), Mark Tyndell (18 for Philadelphia's Player of the Year, heading for Temple), Kyle Lowrey (13), Sean Singletary (13) and JR Inman (9) but they faded in the final minutes. 5/20/04 NY Hoops: IS8 Preview and prediction. Game summaries: 5/17/04 John P Miciotta: 'Typically this is one of the best days of basketball in the city and this year was no different. What fans saw were eight great teams playing as hard as they can to, as they say during NCAA tournament time, survive and advance. Perhaps the most intense rivalry in New York area club basketball kicked off the day as Tiny Morton's Juice All-Stars locked horns with Gary Charles' Panthers "A" team. The stars of this game were not the two high powered coaches, but the players who staged a great battle that saw Juice garner a well earned 62-50 win. Once again Juice's trio of great guards Corey Fisher, Kojo Mensah and Eugene Lawrence led the way. Although Fisher scored just 11 points his poise against more experienced guards was key in helping Juice get key baskets when they needed. Not only did he set up Mensah slashing and Lawrence from 3 point range, but he helped get his front court teammates involved. Marvin Roberts played very well as he has all tournament, but the surprise extra boost came for Juice came from Tilden High's 6'8" senior Phil Jones who along with Roberts and Mensah battled the Panthers physical front line of Joakim Noah, and Rashon Clarke. Their good work underneath really allowed the guards to get out on the break and when they did, the big guys also ran the floor beautifully and finished strong. For the past two seasons Jones has missed some time during the season for Tilden due to academics. In spite of this Rock Eisenberg has helped the young man lay a solid basketball foundation. If he's able to buckle down in the classroom, the program that gives Jones a chance will get themselves someone who plays tough inside, rebounds and finishes plays. His athletic ability, size and good hands make him a sure fire division one prospect. All he needs to do is qualify academically. Juice also got an extra boost on the perimeter from Lincoln's Jamel Jackson. He contributed key baskets both with his outside shot and with his ability to finish in transition. His outside shot has been a key but underrated part of Lincoln's success this season and if he can bring the slashing ability he showed at IS8 to the PSAL he will also draw looks from division one programs. For the Panthers, Noah came to life in the second half, getting to work on the offensive boards and becoming more active defensively. But they did not get the kind of consistent guard play they needed to compliment his work. In fact their best perimeter player yesterday may have been 7th grader Lance Stephenson, who capped a great weekend by playing fearlessly against Juice's trio of guards. Fisher, along with fellow super frosh Mike Colburn may be the best high school point men in our region regardless of class now that Sebastian Telfair's high school career is over. And Lawrence is playing as well as he has at any time during his career so for Stephenson to play with the poise and confidence he did even as his team was being defeated is particularly impressive. Game 2 saw a young Panthers "B" team play a pretty good first half against a more experienced Bingo All-Stars team. As always Danny Green was impressive with his impeccable passing and improved outside shooting. Although his size means he projects as an off guard in college, he really sees the floor as well as many point guards his age. He more than held his own against AJ Price and kept the Panthers in it throughout the first half before Arturo Dubois came to life with 20 points after half time. His dominant work inside was augmented by fellow senior David Cobb of Our Savior Lutheran High in the Bronx. He is a very explosive and at 6'6" is both a terrific rebounder and finisher. Also playing well for Bingo in a support role was 6'1" junior guard Devon Baker of Roosevelt High in Westchester who provided a steady perimeter complement Price. The day's third game saw Brooklyn USA's 'B' team hang tough for a while before succumbing to the balance and team chemistry of Mt.Vernon. LaVance Fields was outstanding in defeat scoring 28 points but he could not dominate the game as he had on Saturday thanks mainly to the aforementioned Mike Colburn, who defended him as well as anyone could in addition to his usual solid point guard play. Keith Benjamin helped Bob Cimino's team get going early with fine outside shooting and Jon Mitchell played aggressively inside and made some nice plays facing the hoop. Mount also got important minutes from 6'2" David Clark, who filled in admirably for the absent Chris Lowe and Jon Smith and showed he will be a part of future success for the Knights he's deceptively quick, handles well and has good vision and made several key shots. The final game saw the defending champion Playaz club surge to an early 20 point lead only to have the Philly Ballers tie it briefly in the 4th stanza before regaining their poise and earning an 81-80 win. These two teams are evenly matched physically but the Playaz took advantage of some early discord on the Philly bench to surge to a 20 point lead. Just like last year's championship run, the backcourt of Kyle Lowery and Sean Singletary led the way for the Playaz who got help from outstanding all purpose forward JR Inman as well. It took a while for Philly to get going but they got outstanding games from Shaun Jackson and Omar Johnson in the back court along with Rob Kurz and Khalil Hartwell up front. This game was full of spectacular plays on both sides but at the end, after withstanding heavy pressure Singletary and Lowery made clutch plays and earned the right to continue defense of their title.' 5/17/04 NY Hoops: IS8 Quarterfinals.
5/15/04 NY Hoops: Fisher and Lawrence lead Juice over Brooklyn USA. 5/15/04 John P Miciotta: 'Senior Eugene Lawerence and freshman Corey Fisher combined to lead a decisive third quarter spurt that propelled the Juice All-stars past Brooklyn USA in IS8 playoff action last night. Juice surged to an 8 point lead early behind Kojo Mensah, who played his typical all-around game scoring in transition and lending a hand on the boards. He was helped inside by Lincoln freshman Brandon Walters, who contributed two key baskets, blocked and altered some shots and most important perhaps showed significant improvement both running the floor and catching the ball. Brooklyn USA rallied behind Kaimondre Owes, who regrouped from a slow shooting start, and some good work inside from Grady High's Derrick Echols and Xaverian's Chris Lowery. Lowery's second effort basket gave Brooklyn USA a brief lead early in the third quarter but that's when Lawrence and Fisher took over. With a devastating display of penetrating, shooting and passing they ignited a 9-0 run that was stopped only briefly by a Saiquan Stone basket. That was followed by two long treys, one each from Fisher and Lawerence, and a quick transition basket by Marvin Roberts, who did his usual nice job running the floor making himself available for passes from two of our region's best guards (Lawerence and Fisher). Stone, Owes, and Lowery (who was a terror inside) tried to bring Brooklyn USA back but the combination of the steady senior (Lawerence) and the explosive freshman (Fisher) proved too much to handle.

Then Mount Vernon romped going wire to wire vs. the NYC Jaguars 79 - 58 as their dynamic duo, Mike Coburn (26) and Jonathan Mitchell (20) were tops for the Knights and only Alberto Rojas (15) got to double digits for the Jaguars. For the five Saturday games Brooklyn USA (see below), Keep Your Dreams Alive, the CCYC Hawks (forfeit winner), South Jersey and Holy Cross won over Team Underrated, Running Rebels, Team ROC (a forfeit), Future Stars and Mount Vernon. The Knights were upset by the Crusaders 83-82 as Holy Cross got impressive efforts from Sean Crawford (19), Carlos Avila (16), Mike Johnson (13), Anthony Clark (12) and Joe Vines (9). MV's Jonathan Mitchell (28) and Mike Coburn (27) couldn't do it by themselves as only Chinny Browne (10) helped very much. Craig Thomas (20), Dominick Lewis (13), Serge Clement (10) and Brandon Butler (9) of KYDA bested Vinny Falzone (19), Mike Marin (18) and Ryan Eisner (16) of the Running Rebels. South Jersey edged the Future Stars 94-93 while Tyrell Biggs was still in Germany playing in the Albert Schweitzer games. South Jersey's Kyle Hines (game high 28), Albert Fisher (19) and Cedric Smith (17) outdueled Niko Scott (24), Akeem Gooding (21) and Herbie Allen (20). On Friday night Real Scout took Southside 87-70 and LPAC beat NYC Finest 68-63. Salvador Patricio (game high 30) and Jamel White (22) of Real Scout bested Southside's Brian Reed (18), Devon Brown (17) and Anthony Sand (16). Then LPAC's Quentin Brown (22), Luis Figeroa (19) and Anthony Primble (10) took up the slack as Jamaal Womack was a no-show for the Knights. Derek Williams (16), Lonnell Jones (14) and Chris Lowley (12) were high for Finest. The NYC Heat routed the Running Rebels 86-59 and the Gauchos nipped the Gaels 76-71 on Thursday evening. Yatta Gaines dropped a game high 23 for the 'chos, while Curtis Kelly and Taj Gibson chipped in with 20 and 11. The Gaels' trio of Cody Oliver, Donnell Crawford and Terrell Olston got 19, 14 and 14 but it wasn't enough. In the first game the Heat's starting five - Vernon Teel (22), Milan Prodonovic (18), Miguel Montoya (15), Darwin Lynch (13) and Shahee Martin (10) - dominated the Rebels' Vinny Falzone (14), Mark D (14) and Ryan Eisner (10). 4/18/04 Coach Aaron Radin: 'At IS8 on Saturday Team Underrated showed up late and were down 16-0 to Brooklyn USA. It only got worse from there as the score ran to 28-0 and finished up 71-35 as Brooklyn USA ran their record to 3-0. Kaimondre Owes led a balanced scoring effort for the winners with 15 points. Wayne Turner chipped in 10 points and Clyde Pearson was a defensive and rebounding presence.' 4/11/04 Coach Aaron Radin: 'Terrance Portis scored 23 and Basil Leslie added 18 as Brooklyn USA pulled away in the 2nd half for a 79-67 victory.' 4/10/04 NY Hoops: IS8 Friday 4/10/04 Last night the Juice All Stars lost 86-84 to the Bingo All Stars and today after one quarter they trailed the Shooting Stars 19-12 with Pete Edwards chiding coach Tiny Morton with, 'It's not nice to go 0 and 2 at IS8'. No worry. The Juice were ahead by ten at the half, by twenty after three and won going away 102-73 behind two IS8 veterans - Ramel Bradley (25) and Kojo Mensah 23 - and the precocious freshman, Corey Fisher (21). In the day's first game Brooklyn USA's A team bested JYO 78-63 behind Kaimadre Owes (game high 24), Derrick Echols (13), Tim Weeks (12) Chris Lowrey (8) and Tom Monzano (8). JYO got double digit efforts from Troy Manus (19), Nick Flagg (17), Sky Khalil (13) and Lance Thomas (10). In the second game Roc Steady shot down the Skyriders 99-57 in a game that wasn't that close. It was 36-12 after one quarter as Dwight Gooding had a game high 26 with 20 of those in the first half. K Anderson and L Donnell had 12 each while Shaun Bowan chipped in with 14. Only Travis Colburn managed double digits for the Skyriders with 15. In yesterday's first game the Shooting Stars took Suffolk County 85-64 as all five starters - Rich Forbes (game high 26), Derrick Gabriel (15), Tim Ambrosia (13), center Johnny Garcia (10) and Josh Frazier (8) each contributed to the victory. SC's Adam Parzych (22), Nick Filiosano (15), Ian Johnson (14) and Nick Cirisi (8) needed one more high scorer who the didn't have. In the Friday night second game AJ Price and Arturo Dubois combined for 46 points (26 and 20 respectively) to squeeze Juice 86-84 in overtime. K Baker, Taskico Brown and David Cook had 15, 9 and 8 for the winners whilce Ramel Bradley (game high 32), Kojo Mensah (17), Jamal Jackson (12) and Corey Fisher (9) were just not enough for the Juice All Stars. This past Thursday the Metro Stars older team edged Keep Your Dreams Alive 69-67 while the Future Stars trounced the Rifles 103-49. The Hawks' Elvis Lora and Larry Davis did all their scoring in the fourth quarter with 10 and 8. J Vargas led the Stars with 20 as Desean Gist (12), E Gabriel (12) and J Ferguson were just good enough to take Craig Davis (game high 23), Brandon Butler (17), Gary Graham (10), Serge Clement (8) and Richard Thomas (7) of KYDA. The Future Stars may have the better Stars roster. Chris Martin (19), Adam Walker (11), James Bryant (11), Herbie Allen (10), Niko Scott (10) and Akeem Gooding (8) are all part of a deep and talented team that is still playing without Tyrell Biggs, vacationing, I believe. Mike Bravo and Ray Arnold topped the Rifles with 17 and 9 but it wasn't nearly enough. Team Underrated, Abyssinian Church, Connect Talent and Real Scout won last Sunday's (4/4/04) games . TU just beat the Queens Cobras 67-63 getting 14 each from James St Roberts and Corey Gilmore with 10 each from Mark Johnson and Shavar Burch. They brought seven players and in the first game only Amir Ryan was held to single digits with 9 and then 8. Stephen Jackson (first game high 28, second 13), Keechan Myers (19 and 19), Tashid Carr (16 and game high 30), Maurice Thomas (15, 2), Kilid Hartwell (14, 13) and Shawn Saab (10 in each) made it look easy in that first game and second. S Trey (28), Mike Johnson (13) and Bradley Smith (11) were tops for Holy Cross, while Davon Brown (28), Kelvin Shields (11) and John Pressley (12) had high scores for the Church.
