5/24/05 Coach Gary Charles: 'I would like to congratulate my Panthers for winning the IS 8 championship against Team Odom 109- 56 this past Sunday. Having played in many tournaments across the country, I personally believe that IS 8 is one of the best. To win it is truly an honor. Coaches Mike Moses and Marlon Bottom did a masterful job in guiding the team to the championship, but also did a nice job in spreading out the minutes. Sometime too much talent creates issues (although I 'll take my chances with talent any day of the week). I want to thank all of the player for having a great attitude and understanding that the ultimate goal was winning the championship. Every single one of these players (Derrick Caracter, Danny Green, Curtis Kelly, Lance Stephenson, Jamel White, Rashard Green, Mike Davis, Jesse Sapp, Marcus Cox, Doug Wiggans and Devin Ebanks) could have easily played with anyone they wanted to. But, In the days of selfish players, they were willing to come together for 1 common goal. To watch them not only accept Doug Wiggans but embrace him was something that I won't forget anytime soon. I was asked by more than a few people if this was the best Panther team ever assembled?. This question was asked during the quarterfinal games. Since we hadn't won the championship yet, I didn't want to answer. I wanted to wait to see if we could win the championship. Never in my wildest dream did I think we could beat an Artie Cox coached team by 50 points in a championship game. After the game I started thinking about the 13 championship that we won at IS 8, and the teams and the players that we had that performed all those magical moments. I now know where I think this team ranks but I will keep that to myself...for now. I'll let you decide.' 5/23/05 John P Miciotta: 'The Panthers "A" team saved its most dominant performance for championship Sunday and provided an anti-climactic end to a tournament full of close games. The inside dominance of their trio of big men, Derrick Caracter, Curtis Kelly and Mike Davis, allowed their perimeter players such as Danny Green, his younger brother Rashad, Doug Wiggins Jamel White and super 8th grader Lance Stephenson to aggressively challenge Team Odom's normally reliable outside shooters. The result was a 13-point first quarter lead that the Panthers upped to 20 on a late flurry triggered by Wiggins, Caracter and Green. From that point their defense smothered Team Odom's perimeter game and Artie Cox' crew, which had played so well to reach the final game could not respond to the Panthers balanced attack on offense. Individual award winners included Will Harris (Real Scout) whose outside shooting and work on the boards helping his team to a semi final birth, earned him player of the year honors. Our Savior New American's 6'8" freshman Samardo Samules (Shooting Stars) earned Rookie of the Year with his hard work and nice scoring touch inside. Larry Davis (Team Odom) won the Sportsmanship award for his clutch play in leading his team to the finals, while Danny Green was named the tournament's outstanding senior. Once again thanks to Pete Edwards, and his staff not only for their help covering the event but for organizing a tournament that has become such a vital force for the basketball community in our region. Each year it gets better and better and while that's due mainly to the outstanding teams and players who compete each year, Pete, Hassan and Anthony are the ones who bring them together and create something special for everyone who loves high school hoops.' 5/22/05 John P Miciotta: 'Team Odom and the Panthers each earned tough semi-final wins and set the stage for what should be an outstanding final game Sunday at noon at IS8. In Saturday's opener Team Odom rallied from an early double digit deficit behind an outstanding second-half performance from Larry Davis to edge Aneesa Sports 94-93. In the nightcap the Panthers "A" team used a strong inside to move past Real Scout 96-83. The opener saw Aneesa establish its advantage early in the paint thanks chiefly to strong 6'5" forward Jermaine Peterson of Boys & Girls High. Pete Edwards has given him the nickname "Greedy" but make no mistake, the only things selfish in his game the way he pursues rebounds, runs the floor, and posts up strong. And he used all three of those elements to propel Aneesa to a double digit first quarter advantage. He punctuated the fast start with a great run down the floor which culminated with him taking one of Eugene Harvey's look-away assists for a powerful dunk that set the tone for a game in which both sides played with great energy and intensity. Greedy had plenty of help from his teammates in forging the advantage that Aneesa would carry into the intermission. Harvey and Robeson's Malcolm Grant read each other beautifully and combined for scores both in transition and with "drive and kick out" passes for three pointers. Oak Hill Academy's Jamont Gordon was a force both inside and out. Two of his baskets were tough fade away jumpers from the left baseline as he faded away from an outstretched Team Odom player who had defended as well as he could. They were the kind of plays that might have caused many players to hang their heads but the young guys on Team Odom had no quit in them whatsoever. They started the second half with baskets by Davis and Brian McKenzie. After Malcolm Grant countered with a tough triple for Anessa Davis' hot hand helped Team Odom make their first of what would be several runs at Aneesa. One of Larry's hoops during that first run was a trey made as he was knocked hard to the ground. He completed the four-point play and after that his teammates found their shots as well. Nyan Boatang made a pair of treys, McKenzie made a long trey and a tough two-point basket following his own miss and Malik Boothe, who was outstanding running his team all day against heavy pressure, hit a triple of his own following consecutive hoops by Aneesa. Team Odom cut the lead to 4 points twice before what would be their final push. Aneesa stayed strong thanks to Gordon, who was more assertive around the basket in the second half., Harvey, who showed improved strength by getting two offensive rebounds and converting double pump moves in traffic and Grant, who made two tough running one handers from the right to help maintain the lead. Finally, with the score 84-80 and over 3 minutes left Boatang buried a long triple from the left wing to bring team Odom to within one. Aneesa did not score on its next possession and then Boothe delivered a pass to Rob Hampton on the box. He converted and gave Team Odom its first lead. From that point the lead see-sawed back and forth with each team's best players making the key plays down the stretch. For Aneesa, that meant Harvey hit Grant with a perfect pass on the dead run for a lay-up, while Gordon and Greedy each scored inside. For Team Odom, Davis drove twice, once for a tough banker in the lane and again for free throws. Boatang drove fearlessly for a tough basket and. Hampton, who has battled taller opponents inside all tournament long scored on another quick post up. Down one in the closing seconds Team Odom got the ball to Davis on the right side. The first time he went up the ball was nearly stripped by an Aneesa defender but then, Davis showed what is perhaps his best attribute, poise. He was not only able to regain possession but against heavy pressure stroked what proved to be the decisive basket perfectly through the hoop. Aneesa would have one more possession but good defense from Team Odom forced a player other than Grant or Harvey to handle the ball. Malik Boothe made the steal and secured a great win against a tough opponent for Team Odom.. Team Odom will face a Panthers "A" team which is loaded as it looks to regain the IS8 title. Today it was primarily their inside guys that kept a tough Real Scout team from staging another upset. Derrick Caracter has been assertive in this tournament from start to finish and was a force inside yesterday. Curtis Kelly played as well as he has all tournament while Mike Davis was again a valuable energy guy off the bench. That trio combined with steady perimeter play from Danny Green and Doug Wiggins helped the Panthers win despite strong efforts from likely all-tournament selections Will Harris and Geoff McDermott. The Panthers' size represents a formidable obstacle for Team Odom. Keep in mind though that they have already sent home the defending champion "Playaz Club" in a semifinal upset so they are capable of winning games where they give up some size. The only things that are certain are that both teams will leave everything they have at the gym on 167th Street and 108th Ave. in Jamaica, and the result of the talent on the floor combined with that effort will be the best basketball found in New York City or anywhere.' 5/22/05 NY Hoops: IS8 semis. 5/17/05 Nathan Blue: 'At I.S.8 Team Real Scout beat Starrett City by 1 point on Saturday. Then we beat Tim Thomas Juniors on Sunday 75-55. We play the semi-finals at 1:30pm on Saturday against the NY Panthers who feature Mc Donalds All-American, Danny Green, St. Johns bound Doug Wiggans, Curtis Kelly, Marcus Cox, Rashard Green and Dereck Caracter. It should be a good game, with plenty of action. The game before us is Team Odom who have Larry Davis, Rob Hampton, Shaun Bowman, Mailk Booth, Brian McKenzie and Nyan Boetang against Eugene Nu-nu Harvey, Malcolm Pope and Jabari Edwards. So it should be a good final four weekend. Hope to see you all out there.' 5/14/05 The Juice All Stars and Panthers A teams advanced to the IS8 Sunday Quarterfinals last night with wins and Team Odom (92-66 over LPAC), Playaz Seniors (99-81 besting Metro Hawks), Playaz Juniors (73-71 squeeker over Student Athlete Broncos) plus Real Scout (96-95 upset win on Starrett City) joined them this afternoon. 5/14/05 John P Miciotta: Thursday and Friday at IS8 -- The action at IS8 Thursday saw Anessa Sports and the Panthers' "B" team earn tough wins over the Shooting Stars and the Knights (Holy Cross and others) respectively. Anessa used exceptional guard play from the combination of Malcom Grant and Eugene Harvey to offset the Shooting Stars powerful inside duo of Andre Blatche and super freshman Samardo Samuels. This was my first extended look at the young man from Our Savior New American and he's clearly an excellent prospect. He's got good strength, decent hands and poise to score inside against an Anessa Team that featured Jabari Edwards, Dane Johnson and Boys High junior William Allison, all of whom could challenge him at the rim. Although he tired at times, he runs with good balance and under control, The difference for Anessa though was its backcourt. Eugene Harvey's penetration and decision making were outstanding in a game that see-sawed back and forth before the Brooklynites (with a key guest star of their own) garnered a two point win. The chief "finishers" for Anessa were Malcolm Grant, whose shot making from inside and out was stellar, and special guest Jamont Gordon from Oak Hill Academy. His ability to finish in transition and battle inside helped Anessa offset the presence of two visitors from South Kent Prep for Shooting Stars, Andray Blatche and AJ Hawkins. Game two saw the St. Mary's duo of Tyson Johnson and Tyrone Hansen lead Panthers' "B" over a tough Knights team. They moved out to a double digit lead before Knights' coach Greg Keys (subbing ably for Holy Cross jv coach Lloyd Desvigne) extended their defensive pressure and allowed Mike Johnson, Anthony Clarke, and CK's Chris Martin to use their speed and quickness. Fortunately for Panthers' "B" they made enough plays for an 81-78 win. Friday's opener saw Juice "B" team move ahead early behind Levance Fields and Marvin Roberts to earn a double digit win over the Gauchos. The 'chos mounted a second half rally behind junior postman Greg Avilla and junior shooter Darryl Crawford that cut the lead from 13 to 4 in the late third quarter. Key contributions from Kevin White and Antonio Pena augmented the efforts of Fields and Roberts to help preserve the win. The nightcap Friday saw the Panthers' "A" team overwhelm the Bingo All-Stars with their size and strength. Derrick Caracter was impressive inside while Mike Davis gave them energy off the bench subbing for Curtis Kelly who picked up two early fouls. For St. John's fans the game provided a chance to see East Hartford High star and Red Storm commit, Doug Wiggins, playing for the Panthers. Although he struggled early blending in with his new teammates he showed his athleticism when he pinned a Bingo layup against the backboard and caused a collective gasp from the crowd. He also hit two treys and had a really nice assist to Caracter during a rally that put the game away for good. For Bingo Mike Tuitt and Joe Edwards played well in a losing cause. These last two days were a great early start to a great weekend of basketball in South Jamaica. If you're a fan of good basketball, a trip to IS8 is a great way to spend the day.' 5/9/05 Pete Edwards: 'First round -- Mon 5-9-05 Juice (B) vs. Above & Beyond @ 6:30 and Bingos All Stars vs Playaz Sophs @ 8:00. Brian Bowman (15), Alejo Rodriguez (14), Richard Jean Baptiste (13) and Shane Donnelly (12) kept the game close for a while. Xaverian 70, Elmcor 50. Travis Coburn (13), Greg Burgess (10) and Dave Edwards (10) made this a solid win for Xaverian. Jamie Blanch and Justin Leamon were best for Elcor with 11 and 10 points respectively. 4/9/05 Saturday (5 games) -- Real Scout 103, FUBU 68. Will Harris (53) nearly equaled the FUBU output in this rout and got help from Weyimni Efejuku (26) and Afam Monjeke (11), while Evan Thomas (25), Jermaine Brown (11) and Earl Anglin (15) didn't quite outscore Harris. Aneesa Sport 88, LPAC 76. LPAC got balanced scoring from its starting five of Brian Howard (17), Amaury Fermin (16), Scott Sterling (14), Steve Pickens (11) and Teddy Ellis but Aneesa's Eugene Harvey (23), Malcolm Grant (20), Robert Mitchell (18) and Jermaine Peterson (10) carried them to the win. NY Elite 83, B'ballers 65. With 19 points Howie Ellls was the only PT player ready for prime time. 4/8/05 Friday -- Juice All Stars B 105, Elmcor 72. JAS had six double digit scorers - Jamel Jackson (21), Levance Fields (20), Anthony Brown (13), Marvin Roberts (12), Derrick Echols (12) and Brandon Walters (10) - routing Elmcor, as Dave Edwards (20) and Allen Pintel (14) didn't get enough help from their teammates. Shooting Stars 102, Juice All Stars A 89. The Shooting Stars quartet of Tim Ambrosia (33), Sammy Obteh (23), Samardo Samuels (18) and Mike Rosario (13) outdueled the Juice foursome of Nick Leon (15), D Peterson (15), K Menner (14) and Sheldon Brown (10). 4/7/05 Thursday -- Panthers B 104, ProBound 100. Vic Morris (31) led his team in this high scoring game and got plenty of help from Tyson Johnson (20), Christian Morris (20) and Aleek Pauline (10). Raymond Chamber (23), Rondu Stevens (18), Troy Marcus (16), Paul Burke (13) and Miles Niedes (12) all kept it close for ProBound. Starrett City 92, Team Underrated 59. Randy Evans (16), Anthhony Lesane (15), Jare Gilmore (11) Tyrik Williams (9) and Saiquon Stone (9) led this rout for SC while only Shahee Martin with 21 did much for TU. 4/3/05 Sunday -- B'ballers 84, Chase the Game 62. When Newsday named coach Johnny Mathis their coach of the year an anonymous Bronx coach was quoted as saying that Mathis took a team from nowhere to the championship. Bull! He took them from IS8 to the championship. And he may very well be doing it again this spring and next fall. The coach arrives with 12 to 15 Knights (not always the same 12 to 15), they win some, they lose some and they improve as a team. With Amaury Fermin and Emilija Kinaj graduating, Dwight Hardy may be ready to take over for the Knights. The 6-4 wing had a 41 point effort in this easy win over Joe Walsh's CTG team. Chris Hill notched 16 to aid Hardy, while Chase the Game's Bojon Warrington (16), Tevin Clarke (15) and Davis Williams (10) were best for their side. Student Athletes 60, Running Rebels 56. -- In the day's second game the Student Athletes edged the Running Rebels as their foursome of Anthony Stukes (game high 23), Willie Etheridge (12), Charles Jenkins (11) and Justin Bright (9) bested RR's trio of Patrick Hazel (18), Mike Marin (15) and George Kunkel (10). Above & Beyond 63, FUBU 60. FUBU relied on Evan Thomas (21) and Akeem Bennett (20) for most of their scoring and it wasn't quite enough to top A & B's balanced scoring from Moses Dayee (16), Chris Gibbs (13), Shevon King (12) and Dan Jennings (9). Suffolk County 70, NYC Finest 45. Steve Rossiter (20), Doug Elwell (18) and Adam Parzych (12) easily dispatched Finest as only Rodney Lewis (13) and Akeeem Brightman (11) could do much scoring for the losers. Team Odom 85, CYCC Hawks 69. Larry Davis (20), Brian McKenzie (19), Trevon Hughes (16 and commuting from Wisconsin) and Robert Hampton (13) got the win over Calvin Morrison (19), Jaytoma Wasseih (12) and Qasim Pugh (11) in the day's final game. 4/2/05 Saturday -- Panthers B 63, Team Underrated 54. The Panthers B are not the same powerhouse as the A version but they've got players. Even without their star, Vic Morris, the starting five of James Bryant (13), Tyson Johnson (11), Girard Pitts (10), Tyrone Hanson (8) and Dwight Burke (7) comfortably handled TU, who didn't have a double digit scorer in this low scoring game. Starrett City 83, ProBound 67. Thomas Manzano erupted for 19 first quarter points on the way game high 30 in this SC win. Jare Gilmore (17), Kevin Lynch (11) and Saiquon Stone each added to the Starrett total while only Troy Marcus and Ramone Clemente got to double digits for ProBound with 19 and 13 respectively. LPAC 83, KYDA 70. KYDA's Richard Thomas had a game high 24 in this alphabet game but it wasn't enough as LPAC's Amaury Fermin (23), Stevie Pickins (15), Scott Sterling (13), Teddy Ellis (9), Owen Brow (8), Brian Howard (8) and Gabby Hernandez (7) outscored Thomas and teammates Richard Jean Baptiste (12), Shane Donnelly (12) and Eric Pegueros (12). Lamar Odom All Stars 88, Team Primetime 73. Lamar Odom is sponsoring three teams this spring at IS8 including this one and Team Odom. Well done, Lamar! The All Stars relying on some St Patrick players not named Caracter or Fisher got balanced scoring from Andre Davis (15), Jemal Youngblood (11), Yanick Formanono (11), Milan Prodanovic (11), Tony Dennison (11) and point guard, Altariq Wagner (8) to offset a game high 32 from TP's Anthony McDow. Real Scout 86, CYCC Hawks 76. Will Harris may not be ready for NBA or Nebraska but he began his IS8 season with a 41 point outburst in the day's final game getting help from Jamel Ferguson (10) in beating the Hawks who were led by Kaye Ayeni (12), Qasim Pugh (10) and Kevin Mills (9). 4/2/05 NY Hoops: Dunk Fest at I.S.8. 4/1/05 Friday evening -- Bingo All Stars 98, Brooklyn Queens Warriors 59. Joe Edwards (18), Edgar Sosa (15) and Darren Townes (13) made this an easy win for Bingo as only Robert Gutierrez (23) and Chris Richards (19) offered much resistance for BQW. Panthers A 94, Shooting Stars 63. The Panthers are loaded. Each of their players is a legitimate D1 candidate. In this game Danny Green (20), Curtis Kelly (14) and Lance Stephenson (15) were high for them while 6-8 OSNA freshman, Samardo Samuels had 18 for the Stars. 3/31/05 Thursday evening -- Mt. Vernon Knights 89, Running Rebels 72. Mike Coburn exploded for 36 points to begin the Spring Classic season as Jonathan Mitchell (19), Dave Clark (13) and 6-6 freshman Kevin Jones (6) each contributed. Aneesa Sports 83, LI Lightning 68. There were four double digit scorers for Aneesa - Malcolm Grant (23), Eugene Harvey (16), Jermaine Peterson (15) and Robert Mitchell (14), who proved to be too much for the Lightning's quartet of Corey Fisher (18), Darius Gabriel (16), Justin Burrell (15) and Tyrone Nash (12).
