10/23/05 Team Odom wins the IS8 championship taking the Bingo All Stars 83-75 behind the play of Malik Boothe with 7 points for the game MVP and a stellar defensive effort on Bingo's Corey Fisher, who had 17 points in a frustrating effort. Larry Davis (21), Brian McKenzie (19) and Andrew Gabriel (15) each contributed. Bingo's Edgar Sosa got a game high 28 points and was voted the IS8 player of the year, while Kiwan Lytch was pretty much kept in check with 14 points.

10/23/05 NY Hoops: Fisher and Sosa lead Bingo All Stars to the Chip'.  And Team Odom gets even with The Panthers.

10/23/05 John P Miciotta: 'Guards ruled the day this semi-final Saturday at IS8.  Game one saw the Bingo All-Stars ride their pair of all American guards, Corey Fisher and Edgar Sosa. to a 110-90 victory over Starrett City , while Team Odom used great perimeter play of its own to score a 72-67 upset over the defending champion Panthers.

Starrett opened the game in a zone defense apparently trying to offset the quickness of Fisher and Sosa.  The strategy may have paid off but first Fisher, and later in the period Sosa were hitting treys from long range and helped their team surge to an early lead.  Starrett first tried to counter with outside shooting of its own by Ruben Gallendeaux.  The St. Pat’s star shot lights out in the quarterfinals last weekend, and was looking for a repeat performance.  When his shot was not falling, Starrett needed to make an adjustment.  They countered by going inside.  Saiquan Stone, who scored just 8 points of his own on the day, created baskets with his passing and the primary recipient, Thomas Manzano, took the ball strongly to the basket for powerful dunks.  Starrett took the lead briefly early in the second quarter on a pass and cut from Stone to Manzano.  After the game see-sawed back and forth Bingo went on a late spurt to take the lead at the half.  While Sosa and Fisher provided much of the scoring during the first half run, Josh Spivey’s defense and passing were essential to the rally and ultimately to Bingo’s win.  He made two steals, guarded Gallendeaux beautifully, and hit Edgar Sosa for three left wing triples during that spurt.

Just prior to half time Bingo’s fortunes got another boost with the arrival of Bronx Regional’s Kawan Lytch.  He scored his first two points in the closing moments of the second quarter and they were a portent of things to come.  He would add 24 in the second half and give Bingo a perfect inside complement for the explosive outside game provided by Fisher and Sosa. Fisher showed the complete scoring arsenal that has become his hallmark.  He scored from deep and with two double pump drives that brought the crowd in the bleachers, and in their own chairs, to their feet. Jamie Harris joined Spivey in providing the poised ball handling that allowed the two stars to look for their shots, and made sure Lytch got enough looks inside.  Starrett battled behind Manzano. Stone, Brian McMikle and Marvin Roberts but once Lytch arrived Bingo’s offense became much more balanced and it helped them secure a great win.

Although Team Odom featured great guard play of their own in the second semi-final they played a much more controlled game against the Panthers, who brought with them a quartet of  big men. Mike Davis, Derrick Caracter, and Curtis Kelly combined with our region’s best senior, Lance Thomas to give the Panthers a decided advantage inside. For team Odom, Larry Davis got them off on the right foot, hitting his first three shots. His effort combined with good early shooting from point guard Malik Boothe gave Team Odom a slight edge in the first stanza.  The Panthers regrouped early in the second period, took a slight lead, and drew two fouls on Andrew Gabriel and Edis Dervisevic.

Team Odom appeared to be on the ropes. Although the Panthers’ lead was just two when Gabriel picked up his second foul, the already undersized Team Odom got significantly smaller with Gabriel and Dervisevic on the bench. To their credit they rallied and, to the surprise of most of the crowd took an 8 point advantage into the intermission.  They used key contributions from both their coach and their players.  Artie Cox did an outstanding job getting good minutes from subs Tony Dennison and Johnny Barnes, both seniors at Bryant High.  Both Barnes and Dennison battled on the glass against the taller Panthers.  And Barnes scored 4 points on free throws, getting to the line twice by hustling to offensive rebounds against the Panthers big interior defense.  Davis and Boothe provided the offensive spark, Rob Hampton hit his first trey of the game and then Davis and Boothe combined on a half court trap on consecutive Panther possessions for steals that lead to key late baskets.

Team Odom opened the second half with Davis sandwiching a pair of treys around a basket by Boothe to open a double digit lead.  From there they did lots of those misnamed “little things” to secure the win.  Point guard Malik Boothe struck just the right balance for his team on offense. He made sure they didn’t turn the ball over, made sure they didn’t rush foolishly, and sped things up when good opportunities presented themselves. Davis was the go-to guy offensively and typically made seven free throws to ice the game with less than two minutes remaining. As Pete Edwards told the fans, only one of those free throws touched the rim. Despite early foul trouble, Andrew Gabriel secured four important offensive rebounds in the second half.  While he converted just one for a basket the others gave Davis and Boothe more time to massage the clock, which they did beautifully.

Lance Thomas and Vernon Teel played well in trying to lead the Panthers back but Team Odom scored a decisive win to knock out the champs.  The game was a heavyweight battle where speed and quickness won the day over size and strength.'

10/22/05 It will be Team Odom versus the Bingo All Stars in tomorrow's IS8 final at noon as Team Odom took the Panthers 72-67 and Bingo bopped Starrett City 110-90. Bingo was led by their trio of Edgar Sosa (35), Corey Fisher (32) and Kawan Litch (26), while Thomas Manzano (27), Marvin Roberts (21) and Brian McMikle (17) were best for Starrett.

10/16/05 John P Miciotta: Saturday afternoon at IS8 -- The first four games of Saturday’s six game bill at IS8 saw the Playaz Club juniors, St. Dom’s, Starrett City and the defending champion New York Panthers each advance with impressive wins.  Each game was typical of the kind of action you’ll always find at what has become one of New York basketball’s toughest proving grounds.  The games were played with great energy and pace and invariably there was great talent on display.

The Playaz Club juniors kicked off this great basketball day on a football Saturday with a hard earned 100-99 win over Anessa Sports.  Although this group is indeed made up almost exclusively of members of the class of ’07, it was a member of the class of ’06, Patterson Catholic’s Kimani  Barrett who showed his team the way to victory. His follow up basket with just over two minutes remaining that gave his team the lead for good was typical of his effort yesterday.  As TJ Robinson drove down the right side Kimani  carved out territory on the left block.  He spread out wide and when the miss from Robinson came to that side of the rim, he grabbed it with two hands and powered it up for a deuce. He contributed several key baskets that way, a jumper from the baseline, and showed his versatility on defense by guarding players both under the basket and on the perimeter.

Robinson, despite the miss that led to Barrett’s game winning basket, was impressive also; contributing two key jumpers in a rally that saw the Playaz overcome a five point advantage early in the final period.  Then, after missing his first two free throws of the second half, connected on 4 in the final 2 minutes to secure the win.

For Aneesa, Eugene Harvey led the way as always, but received strong support from Robert Mitchell and Phil Martin.  Both shot the ball well from three point range and did a fine job competing on the glass despite giving up some size and strength to Barrett and his Playaz teammates

The day’s second contest saw St. Dom’s use ball movement and player movement to secure a very impressive win over the Madison Broncos.  The Bayhawks perimeter trio of juniors Roland Davis and TJ Carey along with senior Antone Pearson each took turns penetrating and finding each other either for jumpshots or for layups off back door cuts.  St. Dom’s also made effective use of their talented but undersized post players within the framework of their motion game.  TJ Thomas in the first half and Markeys Deans in the second half each used their wide frames and strength to establish great position inside.  Combine that with St. Dom’s ability to spread the floor and the Broncos could not double down and take away those scoring chances.  The result was a very one sided first half.

The Broncos were able to make a run behind some fine shooting by Charles Jenkins and Anthony Stukes.  They cut a double digit lead down to five when Pearson, St. Dom’s senior point guard, made two outstanding plays to help the Bayhawks regain control of the game.  First, he made a great back cut and took a pass from Davis for a basket.  And then he used a high screen from Thomas, drove to the right and made a tough layup.  Every year at the IS8 classic there’s a team that emerges from the plethora of big name teams and players present because they play well together.  This year St. Dom’s appears to be that team, and as they play well here they demonstrate why they will be one of the tougher teams in our region once high school basketball season begins.

Game 3 saw Starrett City survive a late charge by a hot shooting JYO team to earn an 87-83 win.  Starrett was able to maintain an edge for much of the game thanks to the shooting of St. Pat’s Ruben Gallendeaux and the playmaking skill of Saiquan Stone and Brian McMikle, who had a strong game at point guard.  As most of our readers know JYO is made up primarily of Cardozo players and three current members of Ron Noclerio’s team had fine games.  Guards Sean Crawford and Mike Troll moved the ball beautifully finding each other for open treys which they drained, while 6’8” Djibril Coulilbaly, a kid with good size who transferred to Cardozo from Upper Room Prep on Long Island , was active on the glass. JYO augmented their forces with a trio of outstanding visitors that included former Cardozo center Theo Davis, Philly Lutheran guard Mike Scott and Rice’s athletic senior wing Trevon Charles.  They enabled JYO match the fast pace set by Starett and defend them on the perimeter, knowing that their was some size behind them.  When it got down to winning time Gallendeaux shot the ball well while McMikle and Stone made just enough plays to earn the win.  For JYO their backcourt was terrific.  The small and speedy combination of Troll and Crawford will give PSAL teams fits this season.

The day’s 4th game saw the Panthers overwhelm a young Gauchos squad before a late rally made the final score 93-75.  Derrick Caracter and Lance Thomas were just too much inside for a very young Gauchos team which got strong efforts from junior Zamal Nixon and Rice freshman Durand Scott.

Quarter final action begins tomorrow and there’s really no better place for basketball fans in our region to be.  This year is no different than any other at IS8. You won’t find any better basketball at any level.'
