This year's IS8 Spring Classic is structured a bit differently because of scheduling considerations. The Panthers "A" team and Starrett City had to win two games on Saturday to advance to this week's "final four" of the tournament. The things that haven't changed are the outstanding talent present and the maximum effort the young players put out. While I arrived late for the morning's opener between Starrett City and Juice, I got there in plenty of time for outstanding basketball. Here are some observations from the remaining games: 80 Park 83 Playaz Sophs 70 The "home" team from Queens (80 Park) used strength and experience to pull away from a talented group of kids from New Jersey. Former Loughlin star Darius Gabriel who's now at Winchendon Prep looked as tough and aggressive as ever. He set a quick pace for his team, drove hard to the basket and applied good pressure defensively. Marvin Roberts led the way with 22 and a late arriving Aleek Pauline chipped in with 16. Pauline, the former St. Mary's High star appears to have gotten stronger, which combined with his toughness may make him recruitable by low majors. Jim Salmon's team from New Jersey added a fine New York player, Wadleigh's Curtis Loving, to the mix and he combined with point man Jordan Theodore for some impressive transition baskets. Two other Playaz who showed that they have bright futures are 6'4" active wing Jarrett Mann and 6'11" Ian Childs of Ridgefield Park High. Childs in particular has great size and runs the floor with balance and control. He needs to get stronger, but with continued hard work he has a chance to be very good. Panthers A 69 New Heights 60 New Heights played the Panthers tough despite the absence of point guards Dre Calloway and Chris DeLaRosa. Tyrone Nash, whom are readers know as an outstanding 6'6" forward did a terrific job at a new position, handling the ball on top and initiating the offense. The left-hander also made a pretty drive with his right hand which was the kind of move that he needs to make more a part of his game to be effective at the next level. A pair of talented wings, RJ Rutledge and Lance Goulbourne also had strong games for New Heights. Goulbourne, a native of Brooklyn's Flatbush section who will be a junior at the Hun School of Princeton did is an agile 6'7" forward who did some great work along the baseline while Rutledge made some tough jumpers to keep New Heights close. For the Panthers, guards Keon Lawrence and Vernon Teel had fine games, while Curtis Kelly and Lance Thomas did just enough inside to help the Panthers to a well earned victory. Starrett City 86 Panthers B 80 Thomas Manzano and Saiquan Stone have been stars at IS8 for several years and their all around abilities and refusal to lose lead the way for the Brooklynites. Starrett would not have won the game without some important contributions from other players. Xaverian's sophomore post man James Padgett, who struggled with the quick pace and physical play that is the hallmark of IS8 did a great job competing on the glass against the older and stronger Panthers. Even as he struggled to finish plays, he kept working, boxing out for defensive rebounds and maneuvering around the lane for offensive rebounds. During one stretch of the second quarter his good work kept Starrett within striking distance as the Panthers threatened to open a lead.. Ruben Guillandeaux started slowly after arriving late but came up with two key baskets and a steal to help secure the win. For the Panthers, strong wing man Jenard Fleming was outstanding while Rashard Green and Jamie Peterson also had strong games. Panthers A 100 80 Park 81 Lance Thomas and Curtis Kelly used their length and size advantage to post a convincing win over 80 Park. Vernon Teel provided solid scoring and his good perimeter defense. Gabriel and Pauline were outstanding once again but they could not overcome a Panthers team with great talent and great size.' 6/4/06 Rich Adams: 'In todays playoff action at IS 8, Panthers A and Starrett City win twice and advance to the semis. Game results -- 5/15/06 Coach Dre': On Saturday, Team Underrated 17-under Team (Black) played the first game of the day at I.S. 8 Spring Tourney against Suffolk County All-Stars. Knowing that it was an early game (9:30a.m.), I wondered how the team would perform. They showed up in the first-half in route to a 70-22 half-time lead. We won the game by the score of 113-58. We were led by Scotty Mcrae (St.Peters) 17 pts., 8 rebounds, and 3 assist, Christopher Barber 26 pts., 2 rebounds, 4 assist, and 4 steals. Nick Epley 19 pts., 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Maurice Charlton 13 pts., and 7 assist, Josh Marshall (Sacred Heart) 15 pts., and 7 rebounds, Willie Emmanuel 2 pts., 2 steals, and 9 assist, Dyshaun Flournoy 18 pts., and 3 rebounds, and Matthias Brown who was in foul trouble chipped in 2 pts., 2 assist, and 2 rebounds. We finished 2-2 and a possible spot in the play-offs.' 5/15/06 John McEntee: 'The NY Patriots finished up play at IS8 this weekend with a solid win over Primetime. Rasheem Jenkins, Sam McDuff and Dwight Hardy led the Patriots. Rasheem running point was at his best dishing out 16 assists and scoring 18 points and playing solid defense. Dwight was simply in a zone dropping 52 points along with playing solid defense. Sam provide the defensive spark, solid rebounding and unselfish play to secure the victory. On the boards we had Rick Varnell and Rodney Goodson who provided the solid work inside and contributed 14 and 10 respectively. Geddes Robinson provided a gutty performance playing on a sprained ankle. The Patriots finished pool play with a perfect 4-0 record with victories over Primetime, KYDA, Next Level and Playaz (seniors). Playoff schedule will be announced later this week.' 5/6/06 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'The Metro Hawks 16's defeated the Royal Family 86 -85 in OT yesterday at IS 8. Lamont MoMo Jones had a great game as he hit 16 of 24 from the field to lead the way with 39 pts. Roland Davis added 20 pts David Imes 8 pts 8 rebs 4 blks and Kyrie Sutton added 6 pts 6 rebs and 5 blks. After trailing most of the game the Hawks came back in the 4th to take a 1 pt lead with 2 minutes to go. MoMo got two layups after steals to give us a 1 point lead with 12 seconds to go. After a Royal Family miss MoMo was fouled he hit the 1st but missed the 2nd free throw. He then stole the ball but missed a layup and the follow by Georgio Milligan was blocked and Mohammed Lo went coast to coast for a layup to send the game to OT. The Royal Family took a 3 pt lead but the hawks came up with back to back steals to take a 1 pt lead. On their next possession the Royal Family hit a three to take a 2 pt lead with 20 seconds to go. The young Hawks missed their next shot and fouled with 4 seconds left. The Family missed the free throw and MoMo rebounded and dribbled up and hit a three pointer at the buzzer to give the Hawks the win. Our next game is versus NY Panthers.'
