IS8 ADIDAS SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL CLASSIC 1998 SCHEDULE

8/16/98  Southside wins IS8 Summer Classic with a 80 - 65 win over Huntington as James (Pookie) Lambus wins MVP.  It was 18 - 18 after the first quarter when the Huntington coach pulled his starters.  Southside pulled to a 44 - 31 halftime lead and never got under a double digit lead.  The Southside starters Keith (Rah) West,  James (Pookie) Lambus,  Alwyn (Junior) Curtis, Randy Henderson and Jason Canty scored 19, 15, 13, 10 and 10.  The Huntington guard trio of Barry Baker, Bryon Evans and Chuck Solomon managed only 28 points (8, 10 and 10).  Huntington's 6-6,  Justin Simon was not at the game (his father said he was at the Maccabee Game tryouts).  Damion Fray, 6-7 and late of Miami Senior, started at center for Huntington, but the Southside jumpingjacks outhustled him.

8/15/98   The underdogs win in the semis at IS8:  Southside 96, St. Mary's 81 and Huntington 90, Jaguars 83 in overtime.  With 26 points Joel Suarez of St. Mary's was probably the best player on the court and got help from Jim Frauenberg with 24 and Brian Boyle with 17.  But the Southside quartet of Alwyn (Junior) Curtis,  James (Pookie) Lambus, Keith (Rah) West and Jason Canty scored 23, 19, 16 and 11 and Southside led throughout the game.  Web note: No idea why Jason doesn't have a nickname!

Rashid Hardwick on defense and Justin Wilson on offense dominated to give the Jaguars a 43 - 36 halftime lead as teammate Uka Agbai finally walked in the gym.  Uka scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Jaguars pulled away from Huntington 61 -50.  And then they won easily.  Right?  Wrong!  The three guard combo of Barry Baker, Bryon Evans and Chuck Solomon pressed fullcourt for the fourth quarter to tie it at 73 and win easily in overtime. That trio scored 16, 20 and 15 points.  Justin Simon at 6-7 was a presence inside with 14 points.  Championship game is at high noon tomorrow.

8/14/98   Rich - Friday night at IS8:   Redemption Christian's Alwyn Curtis led Southside to a 70-67 victory over the N. Y. Skyriders.  Kings Park junior Justin Simon and seniors Barry Baker (North Babylon) & Bryon Evans (Half Hollow Hills West) paced Huntington to a 82-67 victory over St. Francis. Miami Senior's Damion Fray is the starting center for Huntington. SATURDAY SEMIFINAL MATCHUPS   11am - St. Mary's vs. Southside;  1230pm - Jaguars vs. Huntington.  More at the IS8 site.

The IS 8 Fall Classic will begin on September 10th. The Tim Thomas Playaz Squad with Brandin Knight, Deshaun Williams, and Del Bethea will participate in the Classic. The Ravens will play in the Gauchos Roundball Classic instead of the IS 8 Classic.

7/18/98:  St. Francis was winless in the Spring Classic, but they began the summer season with a 69-48 victory over Long Island Run & Gun.  Aaron Davis dominated inside for LIR&G, but it wasn't enough against the St. Francis balanced offense and opportunistic defense. 6-2 combo guard Alwyn Curtis, a rising senior at Redemption Christian, led Southside with 28 points as they posted a 20 point victory over Flatbush.
