Riverside will be without Milford Academy's Abdul Mills this weekend. He is arguably their best player. Abdul will be in College Station, TX visiting Texas A&M

10/22/98   Rich at IS8 playoffs:  'In tonight's playoff action at IS 8, JYO defeated Wolfpack 94-75 behind 13 points from Cardozo's Royal Ivey, 12 points from Melvin Robinson (concentrating on the SAT in order to enter Loyola for the spring 1999 semester), and 11 points from University of Connecticut-bound Marcus Cox of Kolbe-Cathedral in Bridgeport, CT. The Wolfpack was led by Roberto Stukes' 23 points and Joel Suarez' 20 points. JYO will face Mika (Paul Robeson HS) at 6:30pm on Friday. JYO should bring Nick Van Der Laan of St. Thomas More and Mark Jarrell-Wright of St. Benedict's if they planning on advancing to the semifinals on Saturday.

Steph (Team Marbury) led 31-29 over Mount Vernon at halftime. Mount Vernon did not have their sensational 6-1 sophomore Ben Gordon. The winner of this game will meet the Gauchos on Friday night at 8:00pm.'

10/21/98   Rich at IS8 playoffs:  'Rebel beat the NY Skyriders 76-65 and Southside upset Aim High 93-91 in opening round playoff action last night at the IS 8 Adidas Fall Tip Off Classic. Rebel was led by McClancy's Darryl Boykins (13 points), Edison's Tony Kellman (12 points), Far Rockaway's Carl Isadore (12 points), Newtown's Sean Ramirez (11 points), Bishop Ford's Kaden Molloy (7 points) and Bishop Ford's Winston Cousins (6 points). The NY Skyriders were paced by Lawrence - Woodmere Academy's Rashaun Banjo's 23 points and Beach Channel's John Connor added 11 points.  Larell Bobb and Darryl Bynoe, both of Far  Rockaway, each scored 8 points.

In the nightcap, Southside's Chris Thompson of August Martin converted a tap-in with one second to give his squad the two point edge over Aim High. Leading scorers for Southside were August Martin's Chris Grant (20), Campus Magnet's Keith West (17), Hillcrest's Sherman Whittenberg (16 with 5 3-pointers), Springfield Gardens' James Lambus (13), Thompson (12), and Edison's Randy Henderson (8). Aim High was led by 27 points from St. John's Prep's Taliek Brown and 14 each from Dean Browne and Newtown's William (Smoosh) Parker.

Tonight's lineup: Wolfpack vs. JYO - 630pm;  Steph (Team Marbury) vs. Mount Vernon - 8pm.  Thursday's lineup: Riverside Church vs. Rebel - 7pm,  BQ Express vs. Southside - 830pm

10/11/98:  Sunday at IS8: Winston Cousins made his first shot in an IS8 debut playing for Rebel as they beat John Apicella's Long Island Run & Gun 67 - 56.  Winston had help - Darryl Boykins,  Tony Kellman and Carl Isadore scored 20, 12 and 10.  But the most impressive player on the floor was the imposing Run & Gun lefty center, Aaron Davis.  At about 6-8 Aaron is a large body. When the Rebel's pivot, Sean Ramirez from Newton went down with a bad ankle sprain in the first quarter, Aaron took over.  The Copiague star has a new spin move to the right to go with his power left move. He scored 19 points, blocked and altered numerous shots and got every reachable rebound.  But what he didn't get, was help from his teammates. Forward Russell Brereton had 17 points, but easily missed that many jumpers - take it to the hole, Russ!

Above & Beyond was late for the second game and forfeited the first quarter - the game began at the second period with Next Level leading  16 - 0.  Six minutes later it was tied at 20.  But Next level eventually won 84 - 69 (they lose by 1 without the 16 gift points)!  The aptly named, Juel Wiggens of Columbus, is the Next Level jewel - in only three quarters he had 25 points. At about 6-3 Juel scores, hustles and plays great defense.  His teammates Ron Robinson from Bronx Regional and and Mike Rice from Rice (where else?) had 21 and 12 points.  For Above & Beyond Andrew (the Wiz) Wisniewski had 25 points, Jeff McMillan 14 and Walik Wilson 13.

10/11/98:  Sunday at IS8:  By the beginning of the fourth quarter of the Next Level vs. Above & Beyond game, Pete Edwards had begun his mantra:  'point guards are in the building,  point guards are in the building.'  The point guards played in the next game - Omar Cook and Jerome (the Fridge) Holman for BQ Express and sophomore sensation Ben Gordon and the three point shooting, Tim Rollerson for Mount Vernon.  They all put on an impressive first quarter show with Jerome and Tim each scoring 8 points.  BQ Express led 22 - 21 with Zack Williams and Juma Allen using their bulk for inside points.  Mark McCarroll was late and a DNP for the first quarter, but he was ready to start the second quarter.

10/10/98:  Saturday morning at IS8:  Nick VanderLaan is a 6-10, top 100 senior at Thomas Moore in Conn. He's originally from California and played last year for the Kent School in Conn. He scored nine points for JYO against the Long Island Hawks at IS8 this morning. Ryan Williams had 14, John Jackman 15 and Mike Salamanca 11 as JYO won 66 - 35.  JYO did not have Royal Ivey,  Mark Jerrell-Wright, Marcus Cox or Brian Woodward on the floor today but they're all on the roster.  With Nick in the middle, JYO may be making noise come playoff time in two weeks.  For the Hawks Justin Cole had 11, M Powells 9 and 6-8, Dan Weadock held his own in the paint with 10 points.  In the second game St. Francis took the Hoop Street Gang 50 - 37.  It was a rarity for IS8 - a fall game with no one taller than 6-3 on the floor.  St. Francis had only five players, but the Dans and Kevins all contributed: Dan Apicella and Kevin Fitzgerald each with 15, Dan Quinn with 13 and Kevin White and Kevin O'Connell with nine points each. (It's a laugh listening to their coach, Quinn senior, barking out instructions and encouragement by first and last name).  For the Gang , William Mann of LaSalle and O'Neill Johnson of Cardinal Hayes led with 12 each while co-captains Leon Martinez and Sarth Benoit had 9 and 8 points.

10/4/98   Sunday at IS8 begins with two great games!  The B'Ballers have a solid frontcourt with Willie Shaw,  JC Mathis and Raymond Edwards.  They scored 19, 11 and 10 points.  In the first half that was too much for the Wolfpack who trailed 34 - 22.  But Joel Suarez (21 points) and Roberto Stukes (15 points) got help in the second half from Muhammed Wilson who ran the show and scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half.  Final score Wolfpack 61 - B'Ballers 58. In the second game it was scheduled as Huntington vs. the Gauchos but for most of the game it was Huntington's Will Frisby with 27 points against the 'chos Adrian Waters, who had 21.  But with four seconds left in the game Justin Simon missed the 'and 1' try to tie it.  Two Frisby free throws made the final 51 - 48.

10/3/98  Rich at IS8:  'Saturday winners: Rebel (please note that they were 66-63 winners over Huntington, the game went right down to the wire with Rebel barely holding on), Aim High, Mika and BQ Express.  Friday winners: Mika and Riverside Church.  6-foot point guard Brandin Knight of Seton Hall Prep has verbally committed to Pittsburgh. His Tim Thomas Playaz squad lost 69-64 to Riverside Church in the Gauchos Roundball Classic final (senior division) on Thursday night.

10/3/98   IS8 Saturday morning results:  Damien Fray did not show for Huntington.  Rebel took advantage to win.  Sean Ramirez had 14 (6 for 6 on free throws), Tony Kellman 13, Carl Lee 10 and John Bucaro 8.  Roland Webber had 11 and Vernon Alonzo 10 for Huntington.  Aim High took the All Stars 88 - 65.  Taliek Brown had 18 by halftime, finishing with 20.  Jason Herring (he's transferred from Westinghouse to Grady) helped with 16 and good board work.

9/27/98   Rich:  'Riverside defeated Above and Beyond 79-63. Riverside's roster includes Reggie Brown, Terrence Watkins, Nick Delfico, Larry Warren, Mike Boynton, Kyle Cuffe, Jason Gibson, Wendell Gibson, Kevin Bell, and Kason Mims. Gauchos defeated Southside 76-75. The Gauchos' roster includes Justin Simon, Michael Smith, Miguel Caballero, Andre Sweet, Stanley Colbert, Adrian Waters, Marcelle Williams, and Tremaine Stevens.'

9/27/98  Mt. Vernon (2-0) faced JYO (1-1) without its best player, Ben Gordon at IS8 this morning.  No Ben, no  contest  - JYO won 88 - 57 going away.  John Jackman, Darryl Leslie, Ryan Williams and Royal Ivey scored 15, 13 12 and 11 for JYO.  In the first game Steph was led by Aaron Lesane's 16 points, easily taking St. Francis 70 -59.  Mike Porter, E. Thompson and David Leon scored 12, 12 and 11 points to help the winners. BQ Express creamed JYO yesterday.  Two games left on todays' schedule: Above & Beyond vs. Riverside Church and Southside vs. Gauchos.

9/26/98   Seton Hall head coach Tommy Amaker and assistant coach Fred Hill seem to know the IS 8 schedule better than SJP's Taliek Brown.  Taliek arrived near the end of the first quarter to play for Aim High - they were losing to Above & Beyond 23 - 15.  By the half  Taliek had missed both three point tries, he'd charged and scored nine points to get his team to a nearer 35 -34.  Jeff McMillan had eleven points and almost as many rebounds for Above & Beyond by the half.  If  Tommy remains unimpressed by Taliek, Omar Cook and the BQ Express are playing next against JYO.  The Express took the Hoopsters last night.  In earlier games today the Hoopsters destroyed the Long Island Hawks 95 - 65 and Rebel took Southside in overtime 85 - 76.  Carl Isadore hit a three pointer at the buzzer to get Rebel even after four quarters.

9/24/98   Rich: 'Seton Hall head coach Tommy Amaker and assistant coach Fred Hill are planning to stop by IS 8 on Saturday in order to see SJP's Taliek Brown. A squad of Boys & Girls HS players has replaced the Newark Rams in the IS 8 fall classic.'

9/20/98  Sunday morning at IS8: When Joel Suarez  sprained his ankle at the beginning of the fourth quarter his Wolfpack team was leading the Next Level AllStars 54 - 53.   Joel had 25 points.  He returned for the last minute of the game that his team held on to win 65 - 63.  Roberto Stukes of Nazareth ( he starred for Brooklyn USA City Wide junior division champs) scored six points in the last quarter, twelve in all.  Mike Frauenburg chipped in with 13.  Marcus Whitaker and Mike Leonce had 15 and 14 for the All Stars.  In the first game Huntington trailed Long Island Run & Gun 45 - 41 going into the final quarter, but won going away 65 - 53.

9/19/98  Saturday morning at IS8:  Joel Suarez keeps raising the bar.  The junior point guard, who we currently rank as the ninth best junior at this site, scored 34 points as his Wolfpack team took Above and Beyond 78 - 71.  Joel hit four three-pointer - this from a guy who drives past defenders at will. Teammate Jim Frauenberg added 13.  In the first game BQ Express trounced the Long Island Hawks 82 - 42.  Long Island was a young combination from Lutheran - Tim Doyle and Zigmas Kaknevicius,  and St. Anthony, LI - Chris Farrell and Daniel Weadock, but no John Bucaro.

9/18/98  Rich:  'Mika opened the classic with a win over Steph (short for Stephon Marbury), 80-73. Mika was led by many of the Paul Robeson players, such as seniors Richard Pyle, Andre Blackett, Danny Walker, Curt Smith, Ternelle Hampton and junior point guard Mike Sherrod. Steph features many of the Abraham Lincoln players, namely Eric King, Aaron Lesane, David Leon, and John Quintana.

This year's classic is composed of 24 teams led by defending champion Riverside Church, JYO, BQ Express, Rebel, Southside, N. Y. Skyriders, Mika, Steph, Panthers, and the Gauchos.

Tomorrow night's action starts at 6:30pm (St. Francis vs. N. Y. Skyriders for the start and LI Run and Gun vs. Southside in the nightcap).

Regular Season:   Quadrupleheaders on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9:30am from 9/19 - 10/18.  Doubleheaders on Thursday (7pm & 830pm games) and Friday (630pm & 8pm games) from 9/17 - 10/16.

Playoff schedule: 10/20 - 7pm & 830pm;  10/21 - 630pm & 8pm;  10/22 - 7pm & 830pm;  10/23 - 630pm & 8pm.  10/24 - 11am & 1230pm (semis);  10/25 - 12noon (final)
