IS8 ADIDAS SPRING HIGH SCHOOL CLASSIC 1999

5/25/99 Daily News: Riverside Has Lions' Pride.

5/24/99:  Rich: 'Riverside A 85 BQ Express 70. Riverside A defeated BQ Express tonight in the 1999 IS 8 Adidas Spring High School Classic. The Kenny Pretlow coached Riverside A was led by Terrence Watkins' 22 points, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter. Kyle Cuffe, the championship game MVP, and Mike Boynton each scored 15 points.

Zach Williams led BQ Express with 18 points and Jave Meade, the sportmanship award winner, scored 16 points. Jerome Holman did not score and was ineffective due to yesterday's shoulder injury. Omar Cook, this area's best junior, had a subpar performance with 5 points.

Boxscore:   BQ Express - Zach Williams 18, Jave Meade 16, Mark McCarroll 14, Omar Cook 5, Justin Hassell 4.  Riverside A - Terrence Watkins 22, Kyle Cuffe 15, Mike Boynton 15, Reggie Brown 13, Andre Sweet 8, Eric King 5, Kason Mims 4, Kevin Bell 3.

BQ Express 18 32 49 70.  Riverside A 17 36 63 85

1st Team All Classic - Eric King,  Zach Williams,  Kyle Cuffe,  Kenny Satterfield,  Omar Cook.

2nd Team All Classic -  Micah Brand,  Brian Woodward,  Will Poole,  Jerome Holman,  Taliek Brown.

3rd Team All Classic - Rob Lewin,  J. C. Mathis,  Jason Coleman, John Jackman,  Ben Gordon.

5/24/99:  Rich: 'Jerome Holman injured his shoulder in the second half of the BQ Express-Southside game. He was in pain and on the floor for several minutes as EMT personnel were called to attend to him. He may not play tonight and Andre Sweet should be back from Puerto Rico to possibly play for Riverside A tonight. It should be a memorable championship game. IS 8 was used for local elections on Tuesday forcing games scheduled for that day to Thursday. The revised schedule forced the championship game for a 7pm tipoff tonight.'

5/23/99:  Rich:  'Riverside A vs. BQ Express on Monday.'  John P Miciotta: Game 2 and off court news - 'I had to leave early in the 4th Period with BQ express leading 71-61. The game was tied and 23 at the quarter and BQ lead 45-43 at the half. BQ express got unexpected but well timed big games from two of New York City's most under recruited seniors. Christ the King's Jave Meade was terrific at both ends of the floor for Artie Cox's charges; scoring in transition and doing a terrific defensive job first on Sherm Whittenberg and then on Chris Grant. He and Christ the King teammate Willie Poole, "the one you never hear about" according to tournament director and public address stylist Pete Edwards, were as solid as to guards could be. They made open shots, moved the ball smartly and played great defense to keep Whittenberg and Grant from having super games instead of just great ones like they did. Their efforts on the perimeter were augmented by a terrific effort underneath from Justin Hassell of LaSalle, another senior who is unsigned. He not only helped BQ keep control of its defensive boards but came up with three baskets (two on stick backs) to stop Grant and Whittenberg lead runs for Southside.

Finally some off court news: All Hallows got two fine commitments; one from a player well known in local hoops circles (Mt. Carmel guard Corey Simmons) and one from a player considerably less touted whom I like very much. Remember the name (and please add it to our class of 2003) Luis Nieves a 6'4" forward from Booker T. Washington JHS in Manhattan. Although he's tall early he handles well, plays comfortably on the perimeter and is a really fierce competitor.'

5/23/99:  Change of schedule at IS8 - championship Sunday becomes semifinal Sunday.  In the first game Riverside Church A makes it to tomorrow night's 7:00 pm championship game by taking the Panthers B 82 - 75.  After one quarter BQ Express and Southside were tied at 23.

The Panthers used a four guard offense to come back from a 43 - 24 halftime deficit.  Kenny Satterfield, Drew Nicholas, Eric Ferguson (Pete Edwards: 'he's all over the court'), Brian Woodward and Fab Fisher rotated on the outside while Marcus Douthit and Jack Wolfinger flip flopped inside. But Eric King ruled inside for the Church with 22 points, while Kyle Cuffe, Kevin Bell, Tremayne Singletary, Reggie Brown and Nick Delfico all added to the offense.

5/21/99:  I.S. 8 Thursday results - By Russ Blake, Insiders Report.

Game 1: Rebel 99 Huntington 95.  Rebel surged out to a 49-35 halftime lead and staved off a late Huntington run in the final minute to advance to the next round. John Jackman led Rebel with 32 points, while John Bucaro and Lee Church tallied 15 points apiece. Syracuse (FB) bound Barry Baker bulled his way to 28 points in a losing effort.

Game 2: Southside 85 Team Marbury 69.  Trailing by a point after a quarter, Southside used a huge second and third quarter spurt to put away the kids from Lincoln H.S. (sans Eric King). After three quarters, Southside led 66-36, and only a strong fourth quarter by Team Marbury made the score look somewhat respectable. James Lambus led the way with 20 points while Sherman Wittenburg poured in 15 points for Southside. Strongman Aaron Lesane was a man among boys for Team Marbury, scoring 28 points. Jason Coleman added 19 points in defeat.

5/18/99: Rich: 'IS 8 Playoff Matchups - 5/18 - Rebel vs. Huntington,  Team Marbury vs. Southside.  5/19 - JYO vs. Aim High,  South Jersey/Philly vs. Panthers B.  5/20 -  Panthers A vs. JYO/Aim High,  Riverside A vs. Philly/Panthers B.  5/21 - Riverside B vs. Marbury/Southside, BQ Express vs. Rebel/Huntington.  The 6:30 pm game is listed first. Let the playoffs begin.'

5/16/99  John P Miciotta: ' Southside and the Long Island Panthers "A" team sent messages that they are to be reckoned with come playoff time. In game one of today's slate of four Southside crushed the LI Crusaders behind the shooting and floor leadership of Sherm Whittenberg and a suffocating team defensive and rebounding effort to an easy win. Game two saw to teams that will not be part of the playoffs (Pious XII and Next Level) play the closest game of the day with Next Level using clutch shooting in the closing minutes to seal a 7 point win. Sadly the afternoon's third game between BQ Express and the Panthers "B" team was abruptly ended when heckling in the stands escalated into a fight. One of the participants allegedly threw a bottle putting spectators (particularly young children present) in danger. Pete Edwards and his fine staff acted quickly and decisively, ending the game (BQ express was holding a big lead and was declared the winner) clearing the gym and allowing time for cooler heads to prevail. As Pete said afterward the really sad thing was that the fight was not between players or kids in the stands but between two adults who should know better. Luckily the staff's quick and decisive action insured that no innocent spectators were hurt.

Game 4 saw the Panthers "A' team beat a competitive but undermanned Randy Terry squad. It appears that Gary Charles has come to this year's tournament loaded for bear against perennial favorites Riverside Church and BQ Express. In addition to many of our site's old favorites (Fab Fisher, Drew Nicholas, Duane Woodward, Kenny Satterfield etc), Charles has imported two big men from the Nutmeg State; 6'10 jr Marcus Douthit from St. Thomas Aquinas and 6'10 senior forward and St. John's signee Jack Wolfinger of Barlow High. They have an impressive array of talent and have the deepest team, as the saying goes "on paper" but playoff pressure will tell whether the collection of talent will be enough to offset the tournament tested toughness of Riverside and BQ Express.  Randy Terry just did not have enough bodies to stay with the Panthers and despite a heroic effort from Wadleigh's Larry Morrell a 6'4" leaper was terrific but the waves of talent that allowed the Panthers to sub in units of five proved too much. Playoff action begins Tuesday with double headers Tuesday thru Friday evenings at 6:30 and 8:00.  Semifinals double header is Saturday May 22nd at 1:30 and championship is scheduled for Sunday at 12:30

5/16/99  Rich: IS 8 Playoff Teams - by division and seed - 1E - BQ Express,  2N - Rebel,  3W - Huntington,  2W - Team Marbury,  3N - Southside,  1S - Riverside B,  2E - JYO,  3S - Aim High,  2S - South Jersey/Philly,  3E - Panthers B,  1W - Riverside A,  1N- Panthers A.

5/8/99:  Saturday morning at IS 8 - It's the next to last weekend of the regular season, but the Riverside Church A team finishes with a 4-1 record.  They destroyed the Huntington Roadrunners.  It was 50 - 27 at the half and ended 88 - 49.  Andre Sweet led the Hawks with 25 and he got plenty of help.  Kyle Cuffe was not there, but Mike Boynton, Eric King, Randy Williams, Terrance Wadkins and Nick Delfico all contributed.  Will Frisby had 18 for the Roadrunners, but he got no help.

Thursday evening Team Marbury upset Brooklyn USA and the Curch's B team beat the New York Skyriders.  On Friday Southside took Randy Terry and JYO beat Kennedy.

5/2/99  Sunday morning at IS8: Rashid Dunbar,  Marcus Toney-el,  Rob Reed and Jeff McMillan are all on the JYO roster and none of them were there this morning for the game against the Pius XII Warriors.  It didn't matter. Nick Vander Laan and Samuel Nadeau with 25 points, controlled things inside.  JYO led 48-43 at the half,  65-59 after three and won going away 89-74, despite watching Dana Holmes hit three of four trey attempts.

St. Francis arrived with only five players - Tim Gordon, Dan Quinn,  Kevin Fitzgerald,  Kevin O'Connell and Kevin White - none taller than their 6-3 coach Quinn sr. Midway through the first quarter 6-11 Rashid Hardwick walked in the gym to help the Skyriders 6-5 Rashaun Bynoe and 6-6 Tim Butler.  But Bynoe fouled out halfway through the third quarter,  Butler sat for the first five minutes of the last quarter with four fouls and Rashid missed most of his twelve foot jumpers.  The Skyriders were tied at 11 after one,  up 32-31 at the half and ahead by only 53-48 after three.  Kevin White fouled out with a minute to play and they ran away playing the five vs. four.  Final score 76-64.

Steve Hartwig is the 6-4 center for St. Francis Prep's school team.  Kevin White's father tells me that Steve is playing for the Riverside Church B team at IS8. That's nice for Steve and the Church, but it's a killer for the Terriers - they could use his size.

5/1/99   John P. Miciotta: 'There were three one-sided affairs today at IS8 today as team Marbury, behind Aaron Lesane and Jason Coleman upended the Huntington Roadrunners by 11. Coleman showed again that McNeese State stole a fine player from local low majors, shooting the lights out for 35 and defending beautifully Lesane dominated the glass and scored at will inside. Team Marbury also got a solid contribution from Sylvester Telfair. The older brother of highly touted prospect Sebastian provided steady leadership and got the ball to Coleman and Lesane where they liked it. Sadly missing from this year's edition of Team Marbury is freshman phenom Olabode Olukanni who broke his leg and may be out of action for much of the summer. We will keep our readers posted

Game two saw Brooklyn USA ride the outside play of Rashien Little and Antonique Wilson, and the inside play of Travis Mayo and Jason Riva to an easy win over the Newark Basketball Association. The win was particularly impressive given the absence of Joel Suarez for Brooklyn USA but they moved the ball smartly, used a suffocating full court defense and shot extremely well.

Game 3 saw Riverside's "B" team manhandle the South Jersey/Philly entry. A trio of Class of 2001 mainstays keyed the win. Molloy's Wendell Gibson and St. Ray's Terrell Gantt controlled the paint while Tremaine Stevens was steady at the point. The McClancy sophomore will need to shoot better to make himself a Division 1  prospect but he was steady, found his teammates with smart crisp passes and did not over dribble. If the "B" team can get solid point guard play from the combination of Ted Mumford and Stevens they will be a threat  against the "A" team and defending champ BQ express.

Finally some 2001 updates. First of all as I have written previously but haven't seen posted Kenny Harris has moved with his family to Connecticut so he should be removed from the list. Also add these three names 6'8" Anwar Lewis (All Hallows) 6'2" Greg LeVann (Mount St. Michaels) and 6'3" Molachi Wong of Wadliegh High great name and player.'

5/1/99  Saturday morning at IS8: First game not played: Crusaders couldn't make it.  Thursday evening Randy Terry (2-1) upset Jaguars (1-2) and Riverside Church (2-1) took Elmcor (0-3).  Last night Rebel (2-0) beat Southside (1-2) and Aim High (2-1) stopped Mt Vernon (1-1).

4/26/99  Ziggy:  'Before a packed house at IS 8 Friday night, Brooklyn USA edged Riverside 68-67. Darius Waters (New Utrecht) converted a pass from Rashien Little (Westinghouse) for a layup with three seconds remaining to pull out the win. In a game of many spurts, Riverside led 21-12 after one before Brooklyn USA caught fire from outside and grabbed a 38-35 halftime lead. Brooklyn pulled ahead by as many as 13 midway through the third quarter before Riverside rallied with the halfcourt traps and it was 52-all going into the final session. Joel Suarez (St. Mary's) had 13 while Anthonique Wilson (Prospect Heights) and Greg Johnson (ML King) added 10 apiece. A big surprise to the crowd was the play of 6-9 Jonas Pierre (Canarsie) who was a force inside with several blocks and a thunderous dunk of a missed shot during Brooklyn USA's first rally.'

4/25/99  Sunday at IS8 with four games:  Southside 67, Jaguars 57;  Huntington 80 Newark Basketball Association 52;  Panthers 79.  Next Level All Stars 72 and Kennedy 60, Pius XII Warriors 49.

At IS8 a 3-2 regular season record almost guarantees a playoff spot.  With a win in the first game this morning the Jaguars would have been 2-0 and on their way.  It didn't happen.  Southside is as close as it comes to an IS8 "home team" and this morning  balanced scoring did it for them:  Sherman J,  Chris Grant,  Keith West, Randy Henderson and James Lambus scored 12, 11,  10, 10 and 7.  Uka Agbai  and Justin Wilson were no-shows for the Jaguars and that hurt. Kareem Glover with 13,  Carl Lee 12,  Ed O'Neil 10 and Herve Fortunat with 8 paced the Jaguars, but the effort fell short.

After the first two weeks (minus the 4/22/99,  Thursday postponments over a rewaxed floor) there are three teams that have played three games and they all won this afternoon.  Huntington and the Panthers B are now 3-0, Kennedy is 1-2.  Huntington had it easy.  The Newark Basketball Association are neither the real NBA nor are they last fall's Newark Rams of Troy Murphy and Josh Moore.  Greg McLarkin held the center for Huntington as they won going away.

The Panthers B team features the three guard offense of Justice Howell,  Mike Sherrod and DeShawn Williams.  That trio and their teammates hit 18 of 19 fourth quarter free throw shots.  Meanwhile,  Next Level missed 17 foul shots for the game.  Carl Krauser led the Next Level with 15, but it wasn't enough.

Kennedy is one of the few 'school teams' at IS8.  JC Mathis,  Elvis Rivera,  Leshard Duren, Raymond Edwards and Willie Shaw are all juniors who lead the Knights, next season's early line PSAL favorites.  The Warriors have Dana Holmes, their two guard, who could play for anyone in this tournament.  But without much help the 0-2 Warriors may end up 0-5 by regular season's end.

4/23/99  Rich: 'Last night's doubleheader at IS8 was postponed. We can expect to see these games played on an upcoming Wednesday night. Panthers (B) won 64-61 and Aim High won 69-68 in the late games on Sunday. Roger Rubin of the Daily News stopped by expecting to watch Tamir Goodman who was a no-show.'  Tonight at IS8 it's the Church against Brooklyn USA and BQ Express against JYO.  Rich: 'It may be the most attractive doubleheader on the regular season schedule, if everyone shows.'

4/18/99  Sunday morning at IS8:  Lee Church hits a trey from the top of the key to tie the game at 79 with five seconds remaining in regulation.  On the inbounds play the Rebel steal the ball, hit two free throws and win - Rebel 81,  Randy Terry 79.  In the second game the Huntington Roadrunners took their first lead against Elmcor early in the fourth phase ( that's IS8 for fourth quarter ) and won easily 92 - 86. At about 6-3, Dan Artest (Ron's younger brother) gave away three or four inches to Will Frisby and Greg Malurkin, but he held his own inside with a team high 27 points, including two uncontested treys to end the game and make it seem closer than it was. Nick Gavin and Kevin Bishop had 14 and 10 points for Elmcor, who again played without their star guard, Ray Abellard.  Frisby and Kenneth Hinton each had 18 and Vernon Stanton had 17.  The afternoon games were Kennedy vs. Panthers B and Aim High against the Skyriders.

Ron Artest and PSAL finalist coaches Ron Naclerio and Johnny Mathis were in the gym.  I got a chance to chat with coach Mathis and mentioned that I had sent him a letter at the beginning of the year.  'I'd never get that',  he told me. It seems J C has a mailbox at school; his father doesn't.  From now on I'll use the phone.

I also got an initial scouting report on Tamir Goodman, the 'Jewish Jordan'.  Tamir is an orthodox Jew from the Washington DC area - he's a junior who has already announced for the University of Maryland.  Tamir is commuting for the IS 8 tournament, but this weekend Ben Gordon, Mount Vernon's super soph, schooled him for 40 points.  After one game, Tamir has a ways to go. He'll get four more chances during the regular season with Riverside "B' and Taliek Brown's Aim High in the Skyriders' bracket.  Twelve of the twenty-four teams will make the playoffs scheduled to begin Thursday night, May 20th. to championship Sunday on May 23rd. at high noon.  We'll post the full regular season schedule and playoff brackets, later this week.

4/17/99  Rich: 'Regular season action started on Thursday night with Mount Vernon defeating the New York Skyriders behind 40 points from Mount Vernon sophomore Ben Gordon. U. of Maryland-bound Tamir Goodman scored 10 points for the NY Skyriders.

Riverside Church (A) beat Team Marbury, 90-70. As usual Riverside has more than enough talent with the likes of Andre Sweet, Kyle Cuffe, Michael Boynton, Kevin Bell, Tremayne Singletary, Ryan Williams, Reggie Brown, Eric King, Miguel Caballero, and Nick Delfico on the roster. Lamar Odom, the future lottery pick, was in the gym.

On Friday night, the Long Island Panthers (A) defeated Southside, 86-84 with Kenny Satterfield, Brian Woodward, Eric Ferguson, Fab Fisher, and Drew Nicholas starring for the Panthers. LI Panther and St. Mar'y's (Manhasset) forward Andre Williams has committed to UMBC. In the nightcap, BQ Express defeated Kennedy with Omar Cook, Zach Williams, Jave Meade, Will Poole and Jerome Holman leading the way for the IS 8 1998 fall champs. J. C. Mathis and Elvis Rivera led Kennedy in defeat. The St. John's trio of Erick Barkley, Reggie Jessie and Donald Emanuel along with editors Winston G. Kelly (GameBall) and Tom Konchalski (HSBI Report) enjoyed the action.

Today's action featured victories by Randy Terry with Erasmus' Cliffone Ault and Lane's Robert Villanueva leading the way over the LI Crusaders. The Long Island Panthers (B) defeated Pius XII Warriors with McClancy's Darryl Boykins, Paterson Catholic's Justice Howell, Robeson's Mike Sherrod and LaSalle's Lenny Cooke pacing the victors. Cooke, who is blessed with great hands and footwork, may be the city's best freshman. JYO defeated the Next Level All Stars 86-79 and were led by Faith Christian's Cheyne Gadson, Marist's Rob Reed, and St. Thomas More's Jeff McMillan. JYO was without Rashid Dunbar, Marcus Toney-el, Nick Vanderlaan and Cardozo's Royal Ivey who is spending the weekend visiting Marist. In today's last game, Brooklyn USA (Joel Suarez, Darius Waters) were leading Elmcor (Edison's Daniel Artest, Flushing's Shamont Brown, McClancy's Kevin Bishop), 41-25, at halftime. I believe that Elmcor and Erasmus guard Ray Abellard was visiting Tallahassee CC this weekend.'
