East:   Riverside A: 5-0;  Hoopsters: 4-1;  Orange Crush:  3-2.

West:  BQ Express: 5-0;  Bronx Ravens: 4-1;  NY Skyriders:  3-2.

North:   Panthers: 4-1;  Southside: 4-1;   St Mary: 3-2.

South:   Riverside B: 5-0;  Jaguars: 4-1;    Newark Rams: 2-3.

Playoff Schedule:  Twelve teams, six days, eleven games, single elimination.

5/31/98    IS8 DAY SIX CHAMPIONSHIP GAME:   On Godzilla weekend size does matter, but at IS8 depth wins championships.   Riverside Hawks 'A' beat BQ Express 93-68 with seven players in double digits - Andre Stanley 19,  Clifford Strong 15,  Justin Jackette 13,  Will Dudley 12 and 10 each for Anthony Glover,  Dyree Wilson and Bronski Dockery.  The Express led 20-19 after 'phase one', but the linescore after that was 42, 61, 93 for the Hawks to 31, 47, 68 for the Express, who had five main scorers - Osei Millar 16, Willie Poole 15 (no longer just the defensive specialist),  Mark McCarroll 12,  Omar Cook 11 and Jave Meade 8.  But only six bench points from Hampton 4, and Mims 2  doomed them.  No depth, no championship.

5/30/98    IS8 DAY FIVE:   John Miciotta:  'Two great games - Today's semi-final double header at IS8 certainly will long be remembered. Two great games,4 great teams and so many great players it was a recruiter's paradise. The first matchup featured the two Riverside Church entries; their "present" (A) mostly seniors, and their "future" (B) mostly underclassmen.   The first half saw the youngsters take it right to their more experienced opponents, building an 9 point lead at the break on the hot shooting of Molloy junior Reggie Brown and Loughlin soph Michael Boykin.   The "A" team came back with a 15-2 burst out of the locker room to deliver what looked like a stake through the heart of the young team. Anthony Glover dominated that stretch, and nearly the whole second half, showing an unstoppable combination of power and finesse under the basket. There was no quit in the "B" team however as Brown stuck 5 treys in the last 1:56 of the fourth stanza. The last of them swished through the hoop as he fell backward into the empty first row. Michah Brand, a 6'7" junior from Middletown NY and Milford Academy complemented Brown's long range heroics, battling diligently inside against the older and stronger Riverside "A" inside players to send the game overtime. Experience prevailed in the extra session though as quick hoops by Will Dudley and Andre Stanley to open the extra session gave the "A" team a lead they'd never relinquish.

In the second game the Long Island Panthers rode the inside strength of J.C. Mathis in the post, and Eric King along the baseline to a six point half-time lead. They were aided by early foul trouble for BQ's Osei Millar who picked up his fourth personal on a technical foul with 4 minutes and change to go in, as Pete Edwards says "phase two".  The Express used the precision passing of Omar Cook and the surprising finishing skill of William Poole to creep closer. Poole, who doubles as Christ the King's football quarterback, looked like a wide receiver streaking down the wing as Cook threaded bounce passes through a maze of Panther arms and legs; leading Poole, and Jave Meade perfectly for lay-ups. The game seesawed back and fourth through the third and early fourth quarter until Millar, who was filled in for well by Jamaica's Mike Artis followed an Omar Cook miss with a swooping slam that gave BQ it's first lead of the half and change the momentum of the game. Millar's basket was eerily similar to a follow dunk in the Brooklyn/Queens diocesan final (also off a missed drive by Cook) that had the same effect on that game. While the Panthers used the clutch shooting of Zach Marbury to fight back, the momentum had changed for good and the Express used it and clutch free throw shooting to secure the win.  Take Care,  John.'

5/30/98    IS8 DAY FOUR:  Rich at AOL:  'BQ Express and Riverside B advance to the semifinals.   Hoopsters 19 32 42 80,  Riverside B 11 36 58 89;  NY Jaguars 20 34 56 71,  BQ Express14 32 50 74 at IS8.  Despite being behind most of the game, BQ Express beat the NY Jaguars, 74-71, and averted an upset. CTK junior Mark McCarroll converted a 10 ft. jumper along with a foul shot with 2 seconds left to give BQ Express a 72-71 lead. Will Poole closed out the scoring with two foul shots for BQ Express. A flurry of fourth quarter turnovers by the NY Jaguars led to their defeat. Juniors Uka Agbai (Molloy) and Rashid Hardwick (Freeport) were impressive in defeat. Uka had a career game, scoring at will and delivering with blocked shots and double digit rebounds. Rashid prevented the usually dominating dribble penetration of the BQ Express guards with double digit blocked shots. BQ Express performed without Boston College-bound Osei Millar who attended a senior prom tonight.

Milford Academy juniors Jeremy Logan and Abdul Mills led Riverside B to a nine-point victory over the Hoopsters.'

5/28/98  Thursday Game 5 - 7:00 Riverside Hawks 'A'  vs. Ravens;  Game 6 - 8:30 Panthers vs. Skyriders.  DAY THREE (games five and six):   The Riverside Church Hawks and the Long Island Panthers have won the last seven IS8 Spring Classics, between them.  Each team advanced tonight to opposite sides of Saturday's Final Four bracket - Hawks 96, Ravens 92 and Panthers 76, Skyriders 70.  Five Ravens scored in double figures led by Satterfield and Morton with 32 and 25 points - a particularly big showing for Greg Morton.  Barrett, Mapp and Clanton chipped in with 14, 11 and 10 points, but it wasn't enough against the very deep Hawks 'A' team.  The got scoring from seven guys: Anthony Glover (dubbed the 'Manchild' by Pete Edwards),  Andre Stanley,  William Dudley, Franck Essis,  Dyree Wilson,  Clifford Strong and Bronski Doughery for 20, 18, 18, 15, 11, 8 and 6 points.  Essis had four 3 pointers, Stanley and Doughery had two each. Glover's one three point try (ever?!) rimmed out, but he got his put backs and Dudley hit his jump hooks for Hawk scoring in the paint.

Zach Marbury had six points at halftime with his Panthers leading 33-31 over the Skyriders.  He scored eleven, aided by 3 for 3 three point shooting,  in the third quarter as his team took a 58-45 lead.  Kenyatta Brown, Lateef Myles and Maurice Jackson had 16, 13 and 12 points for the winners.  For the Skyriders Slabodan Savovic was a no-show,  Vohn Hunter fouled out early in the fourth quarter with 14 points and Jeff McMillan's ten points in the fourth quarter weren't enough.

Web note:  Desmond Herod and Manga Charles were in the crowd (Rich had to point them out).  They signed my latest copy of PrepStars' Recruiters Handbook and managed to read it cover to cover.  I did not ask them where they'd been during the IS8 season and I did not confess to Manga, that I was the guy who'd been misspelling his first name for about five months.  Manga:  If you ever read this site - we're even.

5/27/98  Wednesday Game 3 - 6:30 Hoopsters vs. Southside;  Game 4 -  8:00 St Mary vs. Jaguars.  DAY TWO (games three and four):  Rich at AOL: 'The Hoopsters beat Southside, 80-74 last night.  H 24 41 57 80;  S 16 42 60 74.  Jaguars were up by 19 to start the 4th quarter,  Jaguars 20 33 56;  St. Mary's 16 28 39.

5/26/98  DAY ONE  (games one and two) - Tuesday Game 1 - 7:00 Ravens vs. Newark Rams;  Game 2 - 8:30 Skyriders vs. Orange Crush.  Ravens 69, Rams 67.  Karl Nickerson arrived in the third quarter, but did not play for the Ravens.  By my count, Kenny Satterfield missed on five drives in the paint.  Only four Ravens scored, but Satterfield, Morton, Mapp and Barrett had 25, 22, 12 and 10 points. Charles Henson was scoreless for the Ravens, but his rebounding, defense and fourth quarter block on Mark Jarrell-Wright were pivotal.  The Rams played well - Jarrell Wright and Ronaje Bethea each had 17, Josh Moore and Jeffries had 11 and 12.  Morton scored his 21st and 22nd points from the free throw line with twelve seconds left to ice it.

After one quarter - Skyriders 26, Orange Crush 4.  Skyriders started 6-3 Vohn Hunter and 6-5 Slobodan Savovic as their backcourt with 6-6 Tim Butler, 6-7 Garfield Cameron and 6-8 Jeff McMillan in the frontcourt.  Quentin Granger at 6-5 came off the bench.  In building their 26-4 first quarter lead Vohn, Tim and Quentin had 8, 6 and 6 points.  Terrell Springfield mercifully made his two free throw attempts for the Crush.

5/25/98:   Rich at AOL:  'I am forecasting a Ravens vs. Riverside B & a BQ Express vs. Riverside A semifinal matchup for May 30. Riverside B vs. Riverside A should meet on May 31 for the noon championship.11:00am semifinal game Ravens (4-1, sole loss to BQ Express) Coach Artie Green's junior-laden team is a year away from the final. This team is loaded with the two outstanding NYC juniors in Ken Satterfield and Majestic Mapp (my apologies to the multi-talented Cardozo junior Brian Woodward). Support is provided by three other top CHSAA juniors in Lamont Clanton, Greg Morton, and Karl Nickerson. However, this squad does not have enough to defeat Riverside B and their 11 Division I scholarship players.

Riverside B (5-0)  Led by Bishop Loughlin sophomore sensations, Mike Boynton and Terrance Watkins and the Milford Academy quartet of Micah Brand, Jeremy Logan, Abdul Mills, and Kevin Johnson, this squad enjoyed an undefeated regular season. Expect this squad's depth and talent to wear down the Ravens in the second half. The quickness and explosive penetration of Mills, Watkins and Logan usually lead this team to victory.

12:30pm semifinal game  BQ Express (5-0) This team has the best guard play and a mastermind coach in Artie Cox. His maneuvering in the IS 8 1997 fall classic led BQ to an upset semifinal win over the Newark Rams. However, an MVP performance by Riverside Church's Anthony Glover prevented Artie from winning the title. The lack of depth and inside force for BQ Express may be the deciding factor in favor of a close Riverside A victory.

Riverside A (4-1, sole loss to the Homeboys)  Riverside A is a senior dominated squad led by three Loughlin Lions (freshman Ted Mumford, Cliff Strong, Will Dudley) and four Rice Raiders (Anthony Glover, Franklin Temple, Dyree Wilson, Bronski Dockery). Expect Canarsie's Franck Essis to be a key by supplying the perimeter attack. However, the NYS Player of the Year and the best player in this year's classic, Anthony Glover, will make sure Riverside A reaches the final.'
