10/28/02  Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'The Nike Riverside Championships were played yesterday at Roberto Clemente State park and there were four exciting games. The 5th& 6th grade was between Riverside and the Gauchos a fast paced up and down game which Riverside won 48-38. Riverside was led by Lamont Jones with 28 aided by Brandon Beckford 10 and strong point guard play by Anthony (Face) Givens. The Cho's were led by Omari Lawerence and Kevon Parrom with 12 each. Lamont was MVP and Omari was Sportmanship winner. The 7th and 8th grade was Riverside versus the LI Lightening another game that went to the wire that saw the LI squad prevail 40- 36. Darius Gabriel hit 11 Cory Fisher 10 and Andrew Gabrick 9 for the Church Kahrique Irick had 13 Mike Coburn added 8. Darius walked away with MVP and Kahrique copped the Sportmanship award. The 9 and 10th grade was the game of the day and the game went to overtime before the Church pulled the victory out 56-55. Derrick Caracter (23pts) hit two free throws with 2 seconds to go to win it. Herbie Allen added 11 pts and Chris Lowe added 10. For the Cho's Jorrell Mills led with 13 including a off balance three pointer to send the game to OT. Kashif Pratt had 10 and Joe Vines added 9. Derrick was MVP and Jorrell was named sportmanship winner. The last game was the 11th and 12th grade between Riverside and LPAC. LPAC ended up with a 61- 55 win. Ed Barrios had 23 Johnathan Christian, Jamal Womack and Elariel Padilla all had 10. For Riverside AJ Price had 17 Garfield Johns 12 and Desean Gist 11. Ed Barios was MVP and AJ won sportsmanship. All teams received books pens and calculators and the MVPs and Sportsmen received dictionaries and thesaruses.

Aslo a bit of news was that Ed Barrios has committed to Miami of Florida. Well, thanks to all teams who participated and good luck to all the players as the High School seasons start up this Friday.'

10/1/02 Coach Carlton Screen (FYA): 'In The Riverside Church Basketball Tournament on Friday evening our 11th & 12th grade team defeated Bronx Kanes by the score of 52 - 48. We got outstanding play from Max Menard 16pts and Guy (Randy) Minto 14pts, and great team defense.We are waiting to see the outcome of our pool bracket, with three teams finishing with the same record 2 - 1.  Our 7th & 8th grade team defeated team SONDAY by the score of 33 - 32. We got outstanding play from Adrian Howell and Oscar Bilger and great team defense.  Our 16U team plays tonight at The Gauchos Gym 7:30pm'

9/30/02  Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'The Championship of the 5th & 6th grade will be between Riverside and The Gauchos. The Gauchos advanced by beating the Rise Panthers 55-28 led by Durand Scott 22 Shane Southwell 11. Riverside got there by defeating Team Roc 44-29 led by Lamont Jones 28 for the Roc Russell Smith had 14 Walter Williams 13. In 7th & 8th grade pool play the Panthers got a playoff spot by beating the LI Trotters 44-41 led by K Carr 18 Ian Umpiere 12 for the Trotters D Lynch 13. In 9& 10th grade pool play Abysinnian edged Guachos 53-48 led by D Brown 14 Denzel Barnes 12 for the 'Chos Steve Walker hit 12. SONDAY beat The Bronx Kings 59-50 led by Chris Martin 20 Akeem Gooding 15 for the Kings K Henry had 15. The Rise Panthers beat Team Roc 49-44 led by Marvin Roberts 15 Calvin Rhodes 13 for the Roc Robert Thomas had 26. Playoffs begin on friday.

9/29/02  Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'The Nike Riverside tournament is ending up poll play this weekend. The playoffs in the 5th & 6th grade begin tommmorow. The Guachos finished unbeaten (4-0) today by first beating Abysinnian 54- 20 with Doron Lamb 13 and Omari Lawerence 10 for Abysinnian C. Christian 7. Next they defeated rise Panthers 49-35 A. Benedicts 11 D. Lamb 10 for Rise Shaquille S 14. Riverside (3-1) finished second by beating Team Roc(2-2) 50-26 Lamont Jones 22 for the Roc Russ Smith 12 W. Williams 10. Rise cliched a playoff spot by beating Abysinnian 41-30 John Harris 18 for Abysinnian C. Christian 8. At 9am the Chos will face Rise and Riverside will play Team Roc. In 7th & 8th the Lightening (3-0) clinched 1st in pool C by defeating Team Roc 51-44 Darius Gabriel12 and Corey Sistler 10 for the Roc Davon Fawson 11. Team Roc then eked out a 72-69 win over Abysinnian to clinch a playofff berth. The Roc was led by Dawon Fawson 21 and Jabor Forde 12 for Abysinnian Melquan Bolding 25 and Mykel Wright, Malcolm Pope 12 each. In Pool B the Guachos (3-0) finished 1st by edging SONDAY 43-36 as Trevor Thompson hit 14 and Darryl Bryant 10 for Sonday Kayron Wilson had 16. The Bronx Kings (2-1) got 2nd by beating Sonday 52-36 as Oniell Cooper Rodell Murphy had 13 each Sonday was led by Kayron Wilson 17 Ryan Davis 10. Pool A was won by Riverside (3-0). In 9th & 10th The Ravens went 3-0 to win Pool A. They defeated Riverside 72-67 as Ricky Cadell 25 Shawn Hillard 13 and Devon Bush 12 were all hot. The Church main guns were Jon Mitchell 19 Eli Whitehead 12 and Terrell Biggs 11.The Ravens then beat TK All Stars 52-27 as Devin Epps 18 Ricky Cadell 17 for TK Shalah White had 9. The Ravens finished up by defeating FYA 50-21as Devin Epps had 12 had 25 for Abysinnian Ronald Manigualt 16 Denzel Barnes 13. Abysinnian nipped Prime Time 74-68 as Tasko Brown had 11 Kerak Walker 14 Danny Simpson 18 and Danton Brown 12 for Primetime Jamel T 15 Antoine 14 and Jose 10. All four teams play Sunday to determine the two playoff spots. In Pool C Sonday opened up by beating Team Roc 59-50 as Chris Martin 19 Adam Walker 13 Akeem Gooding 12 for the Roc Robert Thomas 22 and Shahee Martin 15. The Panthers aslo opened up by beating the Bronx Kings 55-41 as Vernon Teel hit 17 the Kings Andre Traver hit 13. The teams face off Sunday for the two playoff spots. IN 11th & 12th Riverside went 2-0 by routing 92nd st. Y 77-52 as AJ Price had 18 Garfield Johns 14 Shanty Robinson 12 for the Y Jason Graver and Ryan Edwards 16 each. They then defeated LPac 68-36 as AJ Price hit 19 Sean Banks Kimani Blaize 16 each for LPAC Ed Barrios hit 17. LPAC beat Team Roc 70-45 led by Mike Smith 20 Jamal Womack 16 Johnathan Christian 10 the Rocs Chester Taylor had 12. The Roc edged The Y 49-47 as Jerrod Smith 17 and Dominic Lewis and Lavon Heisman 12 each for the Y Ryan Edwards had 10. In Pool B FYA beat the Bronx Kings 52-48 as Max Menard hit 16 for the Kings Elvis Lora had 15. Fya then lost to Willie Howie 60-47 FYA was led by Randy H 23 for willie Howie James Barret 23 Dandre Brown 16. The Gauchos beat the Bronx Kings 62-48 as Malcolm Jones, Ronald Ramon hit 12 each the Kings Elvis Lora had 19 . All playoffs start next Friday.'

9/29/02 Antonio Cannon: 'T.K. Allstars had a long day yesterday, it started by losing badly (30pts) to the Bronx Ravens at the Riverside Nike tourney at Riverbank. The loss elimanated us from the playoffs. Special thanks to Kenny Pretlow for having us, it was our first time competing in the Riverside/Nike tourney at Riverbank. The competition was above my 9th grade team's heads. We are looking forward to returning next year in the same 9th/10th grade division. We then proceed out to Red Hook Brooklyn PAL MICCIO championship game, where we lost to a good Brooklyn Team (High Profile) 57-52. Special thanks goes out to Director Kimani Young who played AAU ball with Aim Him and College ball at UTEP. Keep up the good work, you are making a difference out there in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Our third and last game of the day was at the Queens Adidas tourney, we took our fustrations out on the CJE Allstars 67-35. Nice job by For the Good of the Neighborhood, Inc. Dr. Mackey and Tyrone Green are running a tight ship, the games are on time and the officating is up to par!'

9/23/02 Coach Kenny Pretlow: 'The opening weekend of play started this past Friday in the Nike Riverside Tournament. In the 5th and 6th grade bracket the Gauchos are 2-0 defeating Team Roc 41-32. The Cho's were led by Omari Lawerence 12 and Durand Scott 11 and Team Roc's Russell Smith had 15. The Gauchos aslo defeated Riverside 57-49 with Durand Scott hitting 24 the Hawks Lamont Jones had 21. Riverside is 1-1 as they defeated Abysinnian 64-35 Lamont Jones had 24 and Aaron Brown 16 Abysinnian was led by C. Christian 12. Abysinnian 0-2 aslo lost to Team Roc (2-1) 51-39. The Roc's Russell Smith 23 and W. Williams 14. Abysinnian was led by H. Harris 14 and C. Christian 13. The Roc aslo edged the Rise Panthers (0-1) 47-45.

In the 7th and 8th grade division Riverside Church is 2-0. They defeated the Rise Panthers (0-1) 49-29 led by Mike Coburn 12 Marcus Matthews 10. Rise's Kasenn Carr had 10. The Church then beat the LI Trotters 65-44 Mike Coburn 18 for the Church and LI's Sylven Landensberg 10. The Gauchos (1-0) defeated Bronx Kings (1-1) 47-28 led by Allen Forbes 13 and A. Pettiford 15 for the Kings O.Cooper had 14.The Kings had beaten FYA 42-11 led by R. Murray 16 and G Pole 13. The LI Lightning are 2-0 by besting Abysinnian (0-1) 37-21 led by Gabriel Darius 13 Abysinnian Melquan Bolding had 10. The Lightning aslo defeated COA (0-2) Spartans 64-33. Team Roc (1-0) aslo beat COA 47-30 led by C. Cozart 9 COA K. Brutus hit for 8.

In 9th and 10th grade division Riverside (1-0) beat The TK All Stars 60-29 led by Jonthan Mitchell 21 Rory Hicks 14 Herbie Allen 12 Chris Lowe 12 TK's Kevin. Huggins 10. The Gauchos routed Prime Time 101-61 led by Jorrell Mills 31 Prime Time J. Geranimo and J. Thorne scored 12 each. Team Roc opened up with a 70-63 win over Bronx Kings with R. Thomas 19 R. Coleman 15 and Shahee Martin 12  The Kings Keniel Henry had 31. In 11th and 12th grade play The Kings defeated Wilie Howie and FYA nipped the Gauchos 47-46 led by Max Menard 13 and Guy Hinton 12 Cho's Marlon Smith 18 Geogre Skretja 10. Division play continues on Friday at 6pm at Riverbank State Park.'

9/21/02 They're using as many as three courts at Riverbank for the Riverside tournament. They played seven games last night, nine games today and they'll play six more tomorrow with starting time of 9:00, 11:00 and 12:00.  I'll try to have some scores and high scorers by next week. 

9/19/02 The tournament features four boys divisions by grade.  The five 5th-6th teams are Riverside, Abyssinian, Gauchos, Team Rock and Rise Panthers.  The twelve 7th-8th teams are Riverside, Abyssinian, Gauchos, Team Rock, Rise Panthers, SONDAY, Li Lightning, COA Spartans,  Bronx Kings, FYA., Eric Harris All Stars, LI Trotters. The twelve 9th-10 teams are Riverside, Abyssinian, FYA, RC B, Gauchos, Team Rock, Rise Panthers, SONDAY, Bronx Kings, Ravens. LPAC, TK AllStars.  The eight 11th-12th teams are Riverside, 92 Street Y, Gauchos, Team Rock, Willie Howie AllStars, SONDAY, Bronx Kings, LPAC.
