| 4/13/06 Joe Leone: 'Why are we blaming the
NY Post for reporting facts about Devin Ebanks? His own high school
coach said Devin has some character flaws. Like we all do. Why should
they be ashamed for "reporting," which is their job? "Negative slant?" How
exactly was this story positive? Who cares if he's a minor, we read about
minors every day in the paper who break the law. If anything, if Devin
happens to be embarrassed about the story, he can use this as a great learning
tool, while he's still a "minor", so he won't repeat whatever mistakes he
may have made, in college and after. "Public scrutiny" is fine when the Post
showers these "minors" with praise at such early ages. Often, the early attention
only inflates their egos and destroys their work ethic. Yeah, its very
"stressful" receiving hundreds of dollars worth of gear, traveling the country
for free to play in tournaments, knowing full well you will never pay one
penny for a college education that would normally cost over $100,000 dollars.
Ask the other %90 of NYC kids who don't have a special gift if they wouldn't
mind that "stress." I've coached against Devin, who's a great player,
and has always behaved in an exemplary manner when I have seen him on the
AAU circuit. I'm hoping he's a fine young man who may have made a couple
mistakes. No big deal, we all did at that age. I wish him and his family
much success in the future, and again, to use this as a "learning moment"
to become a better citizen, which we can all work on every day. But let's
leave behind this liberal mentality about the poor kids. Let's make kids
accountable, which will only help with their growth, maturity, and sense
of responsibility. The NY Post is not the story here.'
4/13/06 Craighton Barry: 'The NY Post should be ashamed of itself for running the story about Devin Ebanks with a negative slant toward the young man . Last time I checked he is still a minor. Having such a headline was totally inappropriate. The fact that this kid is a blue chip recruit from this area should not make him a target for public scrutiny. This issue should have been handled in-house. The sensationalism in the headline inferred some sort of expose' when in fact the article was full of finger pointing and innuendo. FYI, NY Post; these young people have enough stress in there lives. They do not need you to magnify the negativity that already exists. I do not know this kid but based on the article it did not seem like he did something bad enough for it to make it into the paper with such a bad smell. A simple little blurb would have been sufficient. Good luck to Devin and his family!' 4/11/06 NY Post: Bishop Loughlin gives Devin Ebanks the boot.
