5/5/03 The Saturday morning Superbiddy match-ups featured replays of close regular season games - COA had beaten Team Roc 38 - 36 and Riverside had an overtime win against the Gauchos 46 - 40. But in these semis Team Roc raced to a 13 - 2 first quarter lead and never looked back, easily defeating COA 33 - 13.  Point guard Tyleek Medley and center Jeffrey Short shared game high honors for Team Roc with 8 points each, while COA's Derrick Edwards got 7 for his team. The second game was closer,  27 - 24 Riverside after three.  But with Deshaun Suber scoring 11 and center Davonty Grace 9 the Church pulled away in the final period for the 37 - 29 win. 

In the championship game the Church ran off to 20 - 4 first quarter lead and coasted to a 43 - 20 win over Team Roc behind their MVP, Devantay Grace (pictured left).  He brought new meaning to the old phrase 'grace period'. For the Hawks it was the first, second and third when he scored most of his game high 25 points. For Team Roc it was the fourth when Riverside's coach Paul Suber finally rested his star. This Grace is a lot more amazing than the Mets.

The Gauchos Orange (seventh graders) and Black (sixth grade) teams won both their Biddy semis. The Orange raced to a 21 - 1 first quarter lead and destroyed the Church biddies. This team is loaded - the frontcourt is Allan Forbes (7 points as he dominated this game), Jonathan Rigg (pictured left, smiling after an 8 point effort) and Darryl Bryant, while Sasha Brown (pictured right - game high 11 points), Durand Scott and Dre Calloway make for an impressive perimeter group.

The Gauchos Black had taken FYA 53 - 30 during the regular season but FYA's point guard Chris Ginda (game high 16 points, he's pictured left) pushed the ball at every opportunity and had his team leading after three 28 - 23.  Ultimately, the 'chos were too deep and Kevin Perron (13), Omari Lawrence (10) and Tyreak Johnson (9) won the game 44 - 39.  FYA's Kojo Mensah (9 points - his brother is Loughlin's senior and also Kojo) and Nigel Ferraro (8) couldn't help Chris enough in the fourth quarter.

The Biddy championship was a Gaucho affair as the Orange (seventh grade team) beat the Black (sixth graders) 55 - 47. Many of the 'chos players were at Island Garden for AAU qualifiers, so the Orange arrived with only five players led by MVP Durand Scott (8 points and pictured right), Chris Fouch (17) and Donnell Bryant (14). Anthony Benedict got 14 and the Sportsmanship award for the Black.

The Gauchos also won the Super eights division, a 11 - 9 victory over Kips Bay. They led 8 - 0 after one, 9 - 3 at the half and 9 - 7 after three quarters. Their MVP was Shane Rector and Kips Bay's Daniel Dingle won the Sporstmanship award. Meanwhile Abyssinian won the Young Miss division while Harlem USA took the Junior Miss division.  

Both of the Midget semis on Saturday were decided in the final minute. The Rifles' Trevon Hughes got a putback for his seventh point of the game as Springfield outlasted the LI Trotters 70 - 65, despite a 28 point effort from LIT's seventh grader, Sylven Landesburg who is playing two years up. The Rifles got balanced scoring from Oshamar Planes (14), Unique Stowe (13) and Jermaine Brown (16). 

The second Midget semi between the NYC Rise Panthers and the Gauchos was even closer as Darius Gabriel (pictured) got the tip-in as time expired for the 48 - 47 win.  Rob Hampton (12), Hickman Simmons (9) and Malik Boothe (8 points and the usual heady point guard play from the eighth grader) led the Panthers. The 'chos' Kashif Pratt (10 and Kash got the season's Sportsmanship award on Sunday), Curtis Kelly (9 points with as many blocks), Darryl Crawford (8) and Derrick Dennis (7) came tantalizingly close.

The Midgets championship game was a rout with the NYC Rise Panthers gunning down the Springfield Rifles 96 - 67 behind MVP Rob Hampton (16 and pictured right), Malik Boothe (16) and Darius Gabriel (13).  The Rifles' Unique Stowe was the Sportsmanship winner with 7 points, many rebounds and steals. Trevon Hughes and Oshamar Planes each chipped in with a dozen points.

The Manhasset All Stars got a walkover in the Junior semis as FYA was in Liberty at the Sullivan Eagles Shootout and Team Roc bested SONDAY in the other game. Team Roc then got their championship in the junior division with a hard fought battle against the Manhasett All Stars, prevailing 87 - 77.  MVP Stephen Walker (15), Robert Thomas (29 points for the division's scoring leader who is headed for Mt. Zion, SC entering his junior year) and Samuel Tribble (20) outdueled the Stars' duo of Tyson Johnson (18) and Sportsmanship winner, point guard Jonathan Ham (18).

9/2/02  Vincent Davis: 'Pro Style 2K 3 "Winter League basketball" will be in it's third season in January 2003 continuing through the league's playoffs and championships in April. Sixty-nine teams participated in the first 2001 season, and ninety-five in the second, 2002 season.  Pro Style 2K 3 Games will be played at Bronx Regional High School, 1010 Reverend James Polite Avenue. Games are scheduled for weekend play and features invited teams and organizations for boys, girls and young adults from New York City, New Jersey, Westchester, Rockland, Long Island and Connecticut. To participate applications and deposits must be submitted by November 30th.
