Eleventh Annual PSAL James P. Sullivan Basketball Exposure Games

9/25/03 Rich Kosik: 'After having the opportunity to participate in the past three nights of city hoops at the PSAL's annual James P.Sullivan Exposure Games I came away with many positive thoughts. I conducted three nights  (Mon. & Wed for boys & Tues. for girls) of educational information sessions which were aimed toward assisting every student-athlete to formulate an academic and athletic "Game Plan for Success" . This plan would help them to understand the importance of their academic requirements and give them tips on how to maximize their recruiting opportunities.

The student-athletes of the PSAL were very attentive, extremely polite and sincerely interested in the information presented. Kudoes have to be given to Donald Douglas of the PSAL office, Pat Torny the Newtown coach and administrator of the games. They were assisted by PSAL basketball commissioner Mel Goldstein & assistant basketball commissioner Artie Leitner and too many coaches to list from the five boroughs. The event was well run, the brightly colored game jerseys were a big hit and very informative rosters were provided to the college coaches in attendance.

The quality of play was outstanding (best ever for the girls on Tuesday evening) Several sleepers (with grades) have emerged!'

9/24/03  George Lopez, Truman's 6-4 forward got a clean lane to the basket tonight at the Bronx, Manhattan session of the Sullivan Basketball Exposure Games at Riverbank State Park. He was one of 120 PSAL players from those two boroughs showcasing their skills for Division II, Division III and JUCO coaches.  George plays his AAU ball with the Willie Howie All Stars and recorded 4 points and 7 rebounds a game last season as a junior.

It's September and everyone agrees - Lincoln and Cardozo are the PSAL's  two top teams. For this month Coach Ken Kelly (pictured left) and his Columbus team may be number three.  He's got an impressive senior trio - a  large center, a slashing wing and slick point guard in 6-8 Jessie Iynlekhue, 6-3 Keniel (Kabookie) Henry and 6-0 Elvis Lora.  He's also got size and depth on his roster. The only question is: will he and his team have a spot in the semis in March.

Coach Nigel Thompson (center) led his Monroe team to the 'B' championship last season but the team has moved to Bronx 'A' this season.  He's lost Elton Barry to graduation but he has a strong group of underclassmen in juniors Darian David, Ronald Crispin,  Riccardo Buckeridge, Ibahima Keita, Roger Green and super soph Michael Glover

Three forwards were notable last night. From left to right they are 6-5 Jacob Moreno Coplon of School of the Future, currently ranked # 89 in Hoop Scoop's NYC class,  Gregory Willis, 6-6 from Health Professions and 6-4 junior Darren Townes from Manhattan Center.

9/23/03 Newsday: Skyler Khaleel Recaptures Form.

9/23/03  Coach Ron Naclerio and his Judges (top left) and coach Pat Torney and his Newtown squad (top right) were two of the teams at tonight's Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island Sullivan Basketball Exposure Games at Riverbank State Park.  There are 120 players, 10 on each of 12 teams playing on three courts.

Each of the players below participated.  From left to right they are: Phil Jones  is the 6-8 Tilden senior center, 'fully eligible' according to his coach, Rock EisenbergPhil was there with fellow seniors Darryl David, Brendan Luckain, Delphin Jean Pierre and Jimelle Girod.

Linton Brown  is the 6-5 senior forward from Leon Goldstein High School for Science. He averaged 12 points and 9 rebounds last season and is looking to improve those numbers significantly this year.

Banneker's Gary Forbes is gone but 6-5 senior forward Shawn Towns may be their key guy this season. The defensive skills are already there but his offense still needs some work.

Roland Ampado is the 5-6 Sheepshead Bay senior point guard and Stephen Jackson is their 6-4 senior star. SJ averaged 13 points and 9 rebounds a game as a junior and those totals figure to jump this coming season.

Finally, Preston Miley is the is the 6-2 senior guard at Susan B McKinney, late of Xaverian.

9/22/03 Beginning tonight the eleventh annual James P. Sullivan Basketball Games has PSAL student athletes from all five boroughs competing in the three day festival at Riverbank State Park, with game times beginning at 5 pm each night -- Brooklyn, Queens & Staten Island boys tonight, girls tomorrow and Bronx, Manhattan boys Wednesday.
