If that werent enough coach Steinbach and his team did their best work in the playoffs, winning a borough title and a birth in the PSAL semis before losing to Cardozo. Forward Stephen Jackson averaged a double-double and point guard Ali Mansour emerged as an outstanding team leader at point guard, but this teams real hallmark was its unselfishness, a tribute to its coach. Mark Stelzberg Grady HS Took over the program after Jake Edwards, the hand picked successor of legendary program builder Jack Ringel left the program suddenly. To both Stelzbergs credit and that of his players, the Falcons did not miss a beat. They tied Lincoln for regular season division honors at 15-1 before losing to backyard rival Lincoln in the PSAL semis, all without perhaps their best player Jamel White for much of the year. With his help senior Basil Leslie had a breakout year and junior Kevin White established himself as a fine point guard Khalid Greene Bishop Loughlin HS Khalid guided his team through early struggles (a 5-8 league mark) to a fine playoff run that included a berth in the Brooklyn Diocesan final earned with an upset of top seeded Molloy, and the CHSAA semis in route to a 15-12 mark over all.. Herbie Allen emerged as one of the citys best juniors. And the improvement of players such as Adedkun Olawanreju and Todd Sowell, seniors who saw very little action last year, spoke volumes for the rookies coaching skill. Oliver Antigua St. Rays Ok so this is a little like nominating Joe Torre for Manager of the Year because Oliver has had a top flight club in each of his two seasons, but this year they do not win without him. Sure he got the expected star senior seasons out of Brian Laing and Gavin Grant. But without his ability to help hardworking junior Chris Bethel carve out an important niche, or his ability to utilize point guards Wesley Wicks and Dante Chisolm effectively, they are not raising the championship plaque for the fourth time in 5 seasons. Dwayne Morton Lincoln Like Antigua he has a great team to work with, but three straight PSAL titles and wins over Atlanta Christian Academy with Dwight Howard and Edgewater are hard to ignore. He also did a good job getting the Railsplitters through a difficult time following Telfairs ankle injury vs. Edgewater at Fordham. My vote goes to Steinbach to get to the semis and play well against some of the citys best teams outside league at a school thats not a traditional power is worthy of recognition. A job well done by coach and players alike Players: Sundiata Gaines Molloy He was the CHSAA AA Divisions leading scorer, (27PPG) and lead a young team to a first place regular season finish in that leagues west division. and a top seed in the Brooklyn Diocesan playoffs. He did it all despite seeing combination defenses (man to man on him with a zone) for most of the season. Sebastian Telfair Lincoln The numbers, both individually (33 PPG 9 APG) and for the team (three titles) are hard to ignore as is the attention he gets from defenses and his own passing skill that creates opportunities for teammates. All three of the Lincoln teams he led to championships were well balanced and he knew when to take over and when to let others shine. Brian Laing St. Rays His leadership, and willingness to get tough points (17 PPG) were hallmarks of two straight championships. This year he struck just the right balance between showing off improved shooting and perimeter skills hell need for college while not forgetting the dirty work inside hed always done for the Ravens. He has been an example of success both on the court and in the classroom not just for his teammates but for everyone in the St. Rays program. Basil Leslie Grady If coach Seltzberg provided leadership from the sidelines at a difficult time for the Falcons program Leslie provided that leadership on the court In the process he had a great year, averaging 24 PPG and a shade under 7 rebounds while showing his trademark toughness inside and some range from the baseline. Stephen Jackson Sheepshead Bay On a team that played so well together Jackson emerged as a star averaging 20 PPG and 13 boards often while battling bigger and stronger players. His physical toughness combined with the poise of under rated point guard Ali Mansour made the Sharks the surprise team in the PSAL this season. Picking a winner is more difficult than the casual observer might think. While so much has been deservedly written and said about Telfair, Gaines, Laing and Leslie all elevated their teams to great heights. Injuries also made this senior season a difficult one for Sebastian, but the level of expectations he set in his previous seasons may have made meeting those expectations as a senior impossible. All of this said Lincoln, and Telfair, still played every game with a bullseye on and to have garnered a third straight city title with that kind of pressure speaks well for all of the Railsplitters. But no one wore a bigger bullseye than Telfair and, when healthy he performed like what he is, the best point guard in the country. With all this in mind my choice for player of the year is Telfair in an obvious choice, but not the runaway choice others might think.'
