All Hallows, NYC. 10/24/01 Winston Kelly: 'All Hallows High School - Gaels.  The Gaels Quintet of seniors 6'1Bobby Santiago, 5'10 Marvin McCullough, 6'8 Kiril Wachsman, 6'3 Ricky Soliver and 6'4 Idiongo Okoro are optimistic their nucleus will contend this year. Contributions will also be counted on from junior 6'4 Louis Nieves and sophomores 6'0 Ronald Ramon and 6'4 Albert Forbes.'  10/25/01 John Miciotta: 'The Gaels and coach John Carey finally had what can be called a breakthrough season. After two year's struggling in the tough New York Archdiocese the five kids who were juniors last year finally put everything together. They spent several weeks in the top 25 of several national polls, and despite a tough playoff loss to Molloy the season can be considered a rousing success.

Senior year brings with it great expectations, hope of a city title, and three new players who, if they are able to become a part of the senior group's terrific chemistry, can help move All Hallows to the head of the class. Point guard Marvin McCullough sets the tone for this team. He is a coach on the floor who runs the offense...gets the ball to the right people and knocks down key shots. He also sets the tempo defensively with relentless pressure on the ball. Rickey Soliver is the best all around talent of the group. He is a true "combo guard" who can make shots, drive and kick the ball out to shooters, and defend both guard positions. His long arms and quick hands have made some of the best guards around wary of putting the ball on the floor. Heady Bobby Santiago, is the team's best shooter and best low post feeder. 6'8" Kirill Waschmann's improvement was key to last year's late season run and he's now a legit division one prospect. The 5th senior, 6'4" Idiongo Okoro is an excellent athlete who can help on the boards. Three underclassmen have a chance to help the Gaels if they can successfully integrate their talents into this team. 6'4" junior Luis Nieves is a potential scoring threat from inside and out, and 6'4" soph Albert Forbes is an athletic rebounder who can give the team a needed dose of quickness under the hoop. The key newcomer though could be 5'10" sophomore guard Ronald Ramon. Last year, the Gales suffered a setback when James Walker was lost to the team for academic reasons. His most important contribution, which the Gaels missed when he left, was his ability to give all three of the perimeter players a rest. This year, Ramon takes over that roll and he brings exceptional talent to it. He is already an excellent scorer and defender and if he can play with the same poise and confidence that he showed in leading All Hallows' jv team to the city finals, his presence could mean the difference in more than a few games this year, and give them the extra boost they need to get over the top. Like the senior class, the freshman group is highlighted by three outstanding perimeter players. Terrell Edleston, from the famed Mt. Carmel CYO program is the most touted of the group. Rory Hicks is an excellent scorer and Codi Oliver is a heady lefthander and excellent playmaker.' 11/8/01 Bigmikefour: 'Official All Hallows 2001-2002 roster Albert Forbes - sophmore, Ronald Ramon - sophmore, Marvin Moore - junior, Luis Nieves - junior, Samuel Alston - junior, Alexander Polanco - senior, Idiongo Okoro - senior, Michael McKenzie - senior, Kiril Wachsmann - senior, Ricki Soliver - senior, Bobby Santiago - senior and Marvin McCullough - senior.'  11/27/01 USA Today: Super 25 boys basketball rankings -- Preseason rankings have 3. St. Anthony, Jersey City, N.J. (27-3),  8. All Hallows, Bronx, N.Y. (22-4) and 19. Rice, New York, N.Y. (13-11).  Returning starters: 5. Outlook: G Ricky Soliver, a 6-4 1/2 guard, teams with 6-2 Bobby Santiago and 6-1 Marvin McCullough. C Kiril Wachsman (6-8) controls the boards and 6-5 leaper Indiongo Okoro and 6-0 sophomore Ronald Ramon add depth. The Gaels play one of the nation’s toughest schedules and in the high-profile New York Catholic High School Athletic Association. Next: Dec. 7 vs. St. Raymond (Bronx).

Amityville, LI  10/01 Student Sports Preseason FAB 50 National Basketball Rankings: '42. Amityville (Amityville, N.Y.) 27-1 The state's defending Class B titleists won their last 27 games last season and return the New York City metro area's top player in 6-9 intimidator Jason Fraser, a preseason All-America pick. He averaged 21 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots a game as a junior. Junior point guard Richard Payton (5-11) runs the offense.'    10/26/01 Newsday: He's The Man. But when 6-10 star Jason Fraser is in school, he tries to be just another kid.

Archbishop Molloy, NYC 10/24/01 Winston Kelly: 'Archbishop Molloy - Stanners.  The Stanners are loaded with senior leadership in 6'4 Kevin Hamilton, 6'6 Kevin Diffley, 6'4 Jamaal Wagner and 6'5 Stephon Cherry, the solid nucleus of standout juniors 5'10 Marlon Smith, 6'4 Ivan Marnika and sophomore extraordinaire 6'0 Sundiata Gaines will be counted on heavily by the Stanners.'   12/2/01 Daily News: 'The Stanners lost a heartbreaker to St. Ray's in last year's title game, lost Wendell Gibson, John Sikiric and James Hauser to graduation and have had to deal with the tragic death last week of junior Nigel Polite. That's a lot for a young team to deal with but somehow Stanners coach Jack Curran always has a team to challenge for a title.'

Benjamin Banneker, NYC   3/16/01 Daily News: Garden Butterflies  --  Banneker, Marshall eye 'B' showdown.  3/19/01 Daily News  Forbes Forges Banneker Win.   3/25/01 Daily News  Boys Class B Final, No. 3 Amityville 91, Banneker 73. 11/01  Banneker will be led by their senior inside, outside duo of 6-5 center Gary Forbes and 5-8 point guard Andre Walker.

Bergen Catholic, NJ  7/16/01 BRO: 'Bergen County's top team, Bergen Catholic, played well at the Metro, reaching the round of 16. The Crusaders return four junior starters, including first-team All-Bergen County picks Sean Banks and Joe Sandberg, and have high expectations. "We played well," said coach Joe Dionisio, whose Crusaders lost to Seton Hall Prep, 43-39, in the round of 16. "I thought the game [against Seton Hall Prep] was as hotly contested as any we've played in my year at Bergen Catholic." "This weekend we're trying to keep up [the Bergen Catholic] name," said Sandberg, who added that his club's goal is to reach the level of a Seton Hall Prep, Christian Brothers, and St. Anthony. He raised a hand a little above his head and said, "We're trying to get up there."  11/01  There are no ranked seniors on the roster, but the other ranked underclassmen include juniors 6-5 Miles Orman (NJH # 30) and 6-4 Dan Gentile (NJH # 55) with 6-0 sophomore John Iannuzzi (NJH # 64).

Blair Academy, NJ   11/12/01 Blake Haase: 'I'll try to provide the simplest profile I can regarding the Blair Basketball Program. Last year's record: 19-4.  Head Coach: Joe Mantegna, Assistant Coach: Joe DiBiase.  Key Players: Jason Haas 6'2" 180 PG (Stanford), Luol Deng 6'8" 225,  SF (Junior), Charlie Villanueva 6'9" 220 PF (Junior), Michael McGinley 6'6" 215 PF, Ben Kenyon 6'3" 190 SG, Roberto Felipe 6'3" 2G (Junior) Key Games: L.I. Lutheran (Nov.30), Nottingham Academy (Dec.2), Worcester Tourn. (Dec.8-9), NYC Boy's Tourn. (Dec.14-15), St.Pats (Jan.8 & Jan.28), St.Benedicts (Jan.12), Life Center (Jan.26), St.Thomas More (Feb.2), Plainfield (Feb.7).  **Lots of eyes will be watching this up and coming program this season.  Since Mantegna has taken over the program, he's sent Royal Ivey to Texas and Mike Goia to Vermont. Most eyes will be on forwards, Luol Deng and Charlie Villanueva, both of whom are receiving a huge amount of attention. Jason Haas, one of two post grads that Mantegna allows, has committed early to Stanford. His experience, and ability to pass the ball, will only help this talented group.' 11/28/01 Blake Haase: '... one change to the profile for blair academy...their game on the 2nd of december is not against Nottingham Academy, it's agianst West Nottingham Academy in Maryland. it's basically a fifth year school (new program) with loads of talent.'  12/17/01 Nathan Blue: 'I had the chance to see one of the best teams in the tri-state play this weekend. Nope not Rice or Lincoln. The school is called Blair Academy. It's located in the very small outskirts of New Jersey. They should be one of the top teams in New Jersey but the fact that they have 2 post graduates they cannot be ranked. Yesterday they lost a tough 75-70 game to Worchester Academy MA in basketball city. Worchester featured star players headed to Indiana, Georgia Tech, and Boston College.

Back to Blair, head coach Joe Mantagna has built a solid national program at Blair Academy. In his first year he had a player named Royal Ivey from Queens. Who is now looking like NBA material as a soph on Texas University. This season he has had coaches from Duke, UNC, St. John's, Seton Hall, Illionis, Louisivlle, Syracuse, Memphis, Ohio State, and many many other schools present to see his top players Charlie Villanueva and Loul Deng. On the visit  some schools may find a gem such as Stanford did when Blair Academy pg just committed to the Pac 10 school. Blair is establishing a big rep in the basketball circut. And they sure deserve it!'

Bishop Ford, NYC  Bishop Ford Division II-South.  The 2001-2002 Bishop Ford Falcons were hit very hard by graduation and dismissals. Last year's two high scorers, Mark Riley (University of North Florida) and Robert Legister (Solebury School) graduated and Lamont Hamilton, a 6'8" senior was asked to leave the school for academic reasons.

Khary Moore, a 6'5" slasher, who runs the court very well and is an excellent shooter, leads the returnees. Two quick guards, William Reyes and Edward Washington, both 5'10" seniors should be the key to the Falcons new up-tempo style. Senior guard Joseph Alohan is a terrific defender and a good shooter.

In the frontcourt, the Falcons are small but tough. Senior forwards, Nimai Garrett and Cordell Gragston, both 6'1" are tenacious rebounders and can also handle the ball. The key up front could be Clement Mbom, a 6'5" center, who can rebound but has had difficulty staying out of foul trouble.

Scoring off the bench could be provided by senior Chris Steele (5'11"), juniors George Santiago (6'0") and Adrian Lewis (5'11") who is a terrific defender and will play as a result of sheer desire.

Seniors Mark Parris (6'1") and Calvin Sosoo (6'2") will provide rebounding, off the bench.

The 2001-2002 season will see a whole new cast of characters try to adapt to an entirely new script. The success of the season will depend on how well and quickly the players buy into the new system. The CHSAA B League will be very competitive again this year, Moore and Alohan are All- League candidates.

Bishop Loughlin, Brooklyn, NY. 10/24/01 Winston Kelly: 'Bishop Loughlin High School - Lions.  The Lions will ride the Sumpter Express. Led by seniors 6'7 Curtis Sumpter who has committed to Villanova and 6'4 Jason Olive along with the junior Quartet of 5'11 Kojo Mensah, 5'9 Andrew Wright, 5'10 Courtney Johnson and 5'9 Jamael Lynch. 11/9/01 Pdiddy: 'Bishop Loughlin's 2001-2002 roster consists of Curtis Sumpter, Micah Hunter, Jason Olive, Kirk Bunn, Keith Jones, Courtney Johnson, Travis Adams, Andrew Wright, Terell Rivers, Kojo Mensah, Peter Jean-Baptiste and Jamel Lynch. The senior leadership will come from Curtis Sumpter, Jason Olive and Keith Jones. Kirk Bunn, Courtney Johnson, Andrew Wright, Kojo Mensah and Jamel Lynch may be the best group of juniors on any high school team. Led by Sumpter and a strong supporting cast Loughlin should improve vastly from last season.'  11/26/01 Priscilla Robinson:  'Went to Pratt on Saturday to watch one of our players, Curtis Sumpter who played in the Kangaroo Classic. Sumpter had a real good game and received the MVP Trophy. I know that it I may sound a bit prejudice, but I believe that Curtis will be the top player in NYC. As a team, I think Bishop Loughlin will surprise a lot of people this year. Their guard play seems much improved over last year and they appear to be playing together. If Jason Olive and Kirk Bunn give Sumpter help inside, they can go a long way.'

Boys & Girls 10/28/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary (NYC): PSAL Preview 2001-2002. 'Other Teams worth watching -- Amadou Falls 6'5 fwd sr. and Brian Frankyln 6'8 C sr.'

Camden, NJ   Camden and all world DaJuan Wagner finished last season with a 27 - 2 record ranked # 3 in the NJO final state poll.  This will be a powerful team at the beginning of the year relying primarily on their six returning seniors, but Juanny and friends are now gone.  11/1/01 Inquirer: Coach Clarence Turner back on Camden bench?  A school policy will prevent Glen Jackson from coaching the boys' basketball team.

Camden Catholic, NJ.  3/11/01 NJO: Seton falls in OT to Camden Catholic. 12/15/01 NJ Hoops: Camden Catholic tops Shawnee.

Cardozo  10/28/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary (NYC): PSAL Preview 2001-2002. 'Other Teams worth watching -- Dwayne Johnson 5'8 pg so. and Camron Tyler 5'11 sg jr.'

CTK, Queens, NY - 10/24/01 Winston Kelly: 'Christ the King High School - Royals.  The orchestrater for the Royals will be junior point guard 5'10 Japhet McNeil, senior leadership will come from 6'3 Pete Nelson and 6'5 Eric Martin. Major contributions will be expected from junior 6'6 Justin Marshall, 5'10 Mitchell Beauford and 6'4 Brian Williams.'

11/17/01 John P Miciotta: 'Bob Oliva goes into this season knowing he can count on the Royals' perimeter game. Senior Kelvin Nelson, a terrific defender, good slasher, and improving shooter, leads the way while a pair of juniors Japhete McNeil and Mitchell Beauford should give the team more consistency after a season of some struggles combined with glimpses of their outstanding talent on the varsity level last year as sophs. McNeil is typical of Christ the King's great tradition of point guards. He is a terrific pressure defender with shutter speed hands and great anticipation. He thinks pass first and penetrates well. All he needs is to become more consistent in his decision making and he will prove to be a worthy successor in the esteemed group that includes Erick Barkley, Derrick Phelps, Speedy Claxton and several others. Beauford is a strong off guard who scores on the drive and with great range on his jumper. He has also proven to be very clutch with it, having won two games with last second shots last year. Support for those three comes from senior Stephen Shell, who is steady defensively and can provide all three with rest.

The Royals' perimeter game may become even stronger with the arrival of junior Michael King. King enjoyed a fine jv season last year, and was having a good summer until a terrible beating at the hands of three assailants in Glendale last July left his future uncertain. By all accounts he has made a remarkable recovery with the help of hard work, and the prayers and love of those around him. However the staff at CK was uncertain whether he'd be able to play safely given the skull fracture he suffered in the attack. If he's healthy he gives the Royal another potential scoring threat from both inside and out. At 6' he's a strong leaper with range on the jumper and a real knack for scoring in traffic, that being said though Michael has indeed already proven himself to be a champion the way he has battled back from the assault in July and he has the prayers and love of everyone at high hoops and I'm sure everyone connected with the extended family that is high school basketball in New York.

Under the hoop however, the Royals have a big hole left by the graduation of Robert Barrett. Barrett blossomed in his senior season last year and his development, coupled with the improvement of the young guards propelled them to a strong second half that included upsets over Loughlin and Molloy. This year the Royals have a number of quick athletic "mid sized" players all of whom are quick and athletic but none of whom are really low post players. Senior Eric Martin (6'5") and junior Brian Williams (6'5") both were contributors last year and both are quick leapers and good rebounders. The same can be said for another junior, Justin Marshall (6'6") who played jv last year, and has tremendous potential but must develop more consistent intensity. In an attempt to find offense on the low block, the Royals may move up sophomore Elsmore Gabriel (6'5") a wide body with good hands and a real good knack for rebounding who played well for the jv as a frosh last year. Finding a low post game is particularly essential this year, as the CHSAA includes several low post players such as Chris Taft (Xaverian) Shegari Allenye (Rice) Kyril Waschmann (All Hallows) and Kirk Bunn (Loughlin). If they can develop a low post game to complement excellent guard play CK will be a team that none of the favorites want to play come playoff time.

There is talent throughout the program here as always. Artie Cox jv will include Teyshawn Bierra, WIlliam Harris and Brian Bickford all of whom have potential to help at the varsity level next year. The freshman class is also outstanding and features guards Chris Martin and Nicos Scott as well as wing Hakeem Gooding. The twins Lamont and Adam Walker, are big raw athletes who are just beginning to learn the game. With hard work they can be excellent players.'  11/23/01 EM Krispy: 'I have the final roster of CK for you and the probable starters for your team page. Seniors 1- Eric Martin ( co-captain) (6'6) C,  2- Peedy Nelson ( returning starter) (6'3) SF-swingman, 3- Billy Haufman ( co-captain) (6'1) SG,  4- Will Miller (6'5, 275) C-PF, 5- Steve Shell (6'0) PG,  6- Mike Claxton (1st year) (6'1) SG,  7- Stan Milian (1st year) (6'3) F,  juniors 1-Japhet McNeil (returning starter) (5'11) PG,  2- Mitch Beauford (returning starter) (5'11) PG-SG, 3- Brian Williams (returning starter) (6'5) SF, 4- Devin Diggs (6'0) SG,  5- Mike King (6'0) PG-SG,  6- Chris Vincent (6'1) SG-SF,  7- Justin Marshall (6'6) C-PF sophmores 1- Elsmore Gabriel (6'5) C-PF.  Probable starters are Eric Martin (6'6) C, Brian Williams (6'5) PF, Peedy Nelson (6'3) SF, Japhet McNeil (5'11) PG and Mitch Beauford (5'11) SG.  We return 4 starters from last year.  Teams we face are: St.Joes by the Sea, Cardozo, Xaverian, St John the Baptist, Rice, All Hallows, St.Rays, Loughlin, Molloy, McClancy, St. Francis, Holy Cross, Germantown Academy, Salem (Va), Cave Spring (Va) and Troy (Oh).  We will also be playing in the folowing tournaments: Slam dunk to the Beach (Deleware), Tournament of Champions (Missouri), Lehigh Hoop Festival (Pennsylvania), Prime Time Shootout (New Jersey).'

Elizabeth, NJ. 7/15/01 JSHUTTLESWURTH: 'On the Jersey side the surprise of the Metro was Elizabeth high school. Yes that same Elizabeth that was a national power a few years ago. They beat an extremely good Xaverian team and were losing to St.Pats by 2 when the refs called a tech on their coach in the last 10 seconds of the game and totally put it out of reach for the minutemen but they showed a lot of heart and guts out there and I expect Elizabeth to win the group 4 north section 2 title and battle Passiac for the overall group 4 north title.'   11/01 tbone @ Watchung Conference site: 'If the Summer was any measuring stick,, The Minutemen are BACK!.. Sr's. Rashard Robinson, Ty Bell, Babodul Louisan and Ibriham Jaaber will lead the Minutemen back into the Conference and state fold... say press, press, press, press,..EHS...(I use to hate that cheer).'  11/27/01 Kirreck Williams:  'Elizabeth returns 4 starters - seniors Boabdul Louison (6'1") & Ty Bell (5'10"), swingman Ibrahim Jabbar (6'3") and center Rashad Robinson (6'8"). The 5th spot is open & may go to anyone. Jr. Tyreek Rolon (5'5"), so. Anthony Sims (6'2"), jr. Larry Leverett (6'4"), sr. Osayi Asuen (6'0") and Canadian transfer Frantz Dorsainvil (6'8") will compete for 5th spot and come off the bench. Expect Elizabeth to be deeper, more athletic and more experienced that last year. Should make for an interesting year in the Watchung Conference for the Minutemen."

Coach Brunner stopped short of any predictions. So here is my humble opinion. The same scenario exists for Elizabeth as did last year. After watching them last year & during the summer, they have enough talent, depth and experience to be seriously considered a contender for Group 4 title game -- OR -- they could finish 4th in their own rugged conference. IF Ty Bell stays mentally in every game & runs the team with confidence, IF Robinson works hard on the blocks the entire game & not just the 4th QTR he can dominate a game & be the focal point of the offense - there is no telling how far this team goes. My favorite player is Louison - he continually plays with hustle, providing a spark either driving the lane, shooting from perimeter or on defense. And the wild card is the unknown 6'8" Dorsainvil - how good is he could put Elizabeth on another level. Whichever, this is the year for Elizabeth to prove they are a top notch program again. Not saying a state or county title should be the barometer - but with the talent and experience, a 20-win season is very reasonable. Should be a very interesting year in the Watchung Conference.'

FDA - Frederick Douglass, NYC. 10/28/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary (NYC): PSAL Preview 2001-2002. FDA # 2 -- pg Alonzo Brown, sg Jakeel Gary, and WF Sam Edwards can get 20 a piece on anyone. I really believe this team could have went to the finals had their two key players Edwards a 6'6 jumping jack and Steve Soumme 6'3 G/F didn't fail off. Brown is the PSAL's best defensive player. Very comparable to Lee Church (Boys & Girls grad) now at Stony Brook. He's a leader and has played very well against Sebastian Teflair. He has played better man to man D on him then anyone in the country!  FDA is the sleeper of this season. The best advantage FDA has that no one in the PSAL or CHSAA has is they play as a unit. Coach Pat Mangan has molded this team to a championship squad who is returning basically the same team them had last season. Oh yeah did I mention that they were seeded #4 in last yrs PSAL playoffs.'  11/4/01 BERASM: 'FDA key games -- 12/6 Thurs @ Manhattan Center 4:00 PM,  12/15 & 12/16 Riverbank State Park Tournament,  12/27 - 12/29 Thurs - Sat Celriver Holiday Classic  @ Winthrop University Coliseum, Rock Hill South Carolina,  1/11/02 Fri vs Manhattan Center,  1/20/02 Sun @ LI Lutheran 2:00 pm,  1/27/02 PSAL Hawkins Memorial Challenge Games @ Columbia University, 3:00 pm, 2/3/02  Sun Battle by the Bay Classic @ Atlantic City HS, NJ.'  11/12/01  bonfire: 'The Lions after finishing 20-4 last season and losing in the PSAL's quarter finals are feeling optimistic about having another solid season, With 4 seniors returning and some new kids on the block, they could possibly finish higher this year. Ranked #2 in Nate Blue's "Real Scout Pre-Season PSAL Poll", they should be an exciting team to watch.  Coach Pat Mangan will be mixing the brew and relying on super 6'0" sr.pg. Alonzo Brown, the acrobatic 6'7' sr. center Sam Edwards, and 5'10 sr.g Tahan Ingram, 6'3 jr w/f Lawrence Smith, 6'3" sr. w/f Chaz Johnson, 6'2" jr. sg Malik Brown and 5'8 jr' pg Jahkeem Washington to serve it up. New comers to the mix are 6'2" so. Lavon Hickman, 6'6" Elsun Pickering, and 6'5" Lawrence Williams.'

Fordham Prep, NY. 11/18/01 Coach Kevin Pigott: 'The Rams were 18 and 8 last year. They lost four senior starters. Guards Jared Kildare (5'10') and Peter Garvey (5'9") return. Both can shoot and handle the ball. Forwards Chris Cavanagh (6'5") and Kevin Keller (6'3") will handle the chores up front. They are by nature swing-men who will have to match-up to the bigger men in the CHSAA "B" division. Cavanagh is the better athlete and Keller is the better shooter. With the exception of Garvey, all of the above are seniors.

So far, the Rams need at least three more players to step up. Sophomore Joe Cooke (6'0") has done well. A scorer on the freshmen team last year, he has shown the ability to achieve at the other aspects of the game. Junior Joe Lampkin (6'2") has played well in the post. He is still raw but looks to get better with experience. John Ancrum, another junior, has been a pleasant surprize. He will complement Kildare and Garvey. He is a slasher who has shown his prowess in the defensive end. Another backcourt player (5'10"), he will allow Coach Pigott to use a three-guard offense. If junior Tyler Clements (6'3") is healthy, he will give Pigott some size at the guard position. Pigott has ten underclassmen on the team. Fordham's success, however, hinges not on their inexperince but on how well they shoot the ball. Size could be a problem also.'

Grady, NYC. 10/27/01 Coach Jack Ringel: 'The Grady Falcons look to defend last year's city championship. The Falcons will bring experience and a fresh look this year. Up front 6ft6 sr.Ahkeem McKinnon will anchor the frontline along with 6ft4 sr. Ronald Bass. They will be pushed by 6ft8 jr.Jason Malone. The backcourt returns 6ft0 Kimani Blaize, 6ft4 Malcolm Petercan, and 6ft3 sr, Quincy Douby. Key newcomers are frosh Kevin White, David Sinclair and Jemel White.  10/28/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary (NYC): PSALPreview2001-2002  'Grady # 4 -- Gone are Mike Clarke, Tyquan Goode, Woody Soufrant, Cory Cromer and Jerome Richards from last years PSAL Champs. So basically Grady is done! Coach Ringel isn't gonna win another one no time soon! Right? Nope. Grady is right in it with Lincoln, Robeson and FDA. How? Quincey Doubie 6'3 sg is the best shooter in the PSAL. Doubie was the PSAL most highly recruited player. Choosing Hofstra over Seton Hall, Miami (Fla) and South Florida. Q, has the leadership to go along with two other solid senior front court players. pg Kimani Blaize 5'11 jr. is set to have a breakout year.'  10/3/01 Newsday: Grady's Quincy Douby Chooses Hofstra.  10/2/01 Coach Jack Ringel: 'I am happy to announce that 6 ft 3'' Grady H.S. guard, Quincy Douby, has announced his intentions to attend Hofstra University. He hopes to follow the success that former Grady players Norman Richardson and Roberto Gittens enjoyed at Hofstra. He also will be reunited with Woody Souffrant who along with Quincy, led Grady to the N.Y.C.PSAL Championship last year.'

Holy Cross  10/24/01 Winston Kelly: 'Holy Cross High School - Knights.  The Knights are depending on senior leadership from point guard 5'9 Miguel Gonzalez and 5'11 Woody Aime. Additional experience should come from juniors 6'0 Ramose Modesto and 6'3 Shannon Blackmon.  12/01 CHSAA Media Guide -- 'The team will be led by three seniors. Miguel Gonzalez returns after playing a huge role in the success of last year's semi-finalists. ansd will be joined by returning seniors Danny Surrett and Andre Williams.  New to the team are seniors Ibrahim Hamad, Albert Diallo and Jeff Jean-Baptiste.  The Knights will also rely on seven juniors promoted from last year's JV -- Rich Belot,  Andre Davis, Brian Gayle, Ramose Modesto and Nick Rollins in the backcourt with Shannon Blackman and Gerry Hawkins in the frontcourt.'

Horace Greeley, NY 11/1/01 Westechester Team Rankings -- 'This team is deep. They are ready too. Chris Fleisher brings a lot to the table along with Scordato. Both are experienced players. Sean O'Brien and Josh Wagner will also be tough to defend out of the backcourt. These guys are going to come at everybody this year. Unlike last season, they won't be the team that no one knows about. They are on top of class B along with Peekskill and it will take a lot to knock them off their pedestal.

Iona Prep, NY 11/1/01 Westechester Team Rankings -- 'This is going to be the year that Jimmy Janazcek and Chris Murphy finally get it together. They are two solid guards who should play well together. Their leadership and experience should carry this team a long way. This team could pull off a few upsets in the CHSAA this year.  12/01 CHSAA Media Guide -- 'Iona Prep plays in theCHSAA Division II, North. This year's team will be led by seniors Chris Murphy and Jimmy Janeczek.  Both players made all league as juniors and have been starters since their sophomore year.  John O'Neill, a 6-6 senior who is a Division I football prospect as a QB, will [lay center.  Seniors James Mooney, Kevin McMahon and Keith Davis are versatile and athletic.  Junior Matt Keating and Sophomore Craig Davis add depth.'

JFK Paterson 11/8/01 Coach Jim Ring: 'Pat.Kennedy Team Profile -- This group had an outstanding summer and in the past that was the key to us having a successful year. As a group they played close to 70 games. Finished 2nd to Linden losing by 2 in the Championship in their summer league and finished 2nd to St. Anthony's losig by 6 in the Championship in the Jersey City summer league. Finished 3rd at the Villanova team camp in June and lost to CBA by a point in the Metro Classic. We are very athletic and can shoot the ball extremely well. What we do the best though is defend. We do not have any great size but we go 8 to 10 deep. Expect us to extend the floor and play a very up tempo game to offset the lack of size. That formula worked well in the summer.

Key players: (probable starters) Senior Naim Benjamin a 6' 3" swingman. He can play and will play the 2, 3 or 4 for us. He will be our next 1000 pt. scorer. Needs 325 pts. A 3 year varsity performer has the experience to lead. Will probably sign early next week to go to Wagner. I think that is a great fit for him. Senior Tyshon Bailey a 6'3" postman. He will play both the 4 and 5 for us. He is a very good defender and is very athletic.A 2 year varsity performer. Senior Phillip Hawkins a 6'0" 2 guard. He is an excellent shooter and a very smart defender and player. Has 1150 SAT, if he can increase score by 50 to 100 pts. some Ivy league schools have expressed an interest.  Junior James Artis a 6'1" guard who is very quick and athletic. An excellent defender. A 2 year varsity performer. Sophomore Kenneth Boddie a 5'10" pt. guard. Our best defender and very athletic. Key reserves: Juniors: Raheem Lattimore 6'2", Levar McKay 6'3"  Sophomores: Antoine King 6'2", Marcus McKinney 6'2" Jr.Maynard Molina 5'9" starting pt. guard last year and Soph.David Jackson 6' 0" an excellent 2 guard are ineligibile until Feb. 1st. "Grades" when they return we will be real deep. Our scrimmage schedule includes Cherokee and Burlington City (11/30), White Plains and Poly Prep (12/1), Linden (12/4), Seton Hall Prep (12/8), and St. Patrick's (12/11).

We expect to be good and after that pre season slate I know we will be ready. Where we are ranked is not as important as how we play. If we play smart that will offset our lack of size. The kids are excited because noone expects us to do as well as our teams of the past 5 years (20+ wins each year). I like our chances of doing that again and challenging for league, county, and state titles.'

Linden, NJ. 11/01 tbone @ Watchung Conference site: 'The Tigers will Roar in 2002... when you add a 6'7 presence to a lineup that upset St.Patricks HS in the counties you're adding a lot of trouble for conference teams.  Jakeel Gary joins the returning Tigers Jason Thomas, Tony Wilson and Don Busby.'  11/5/01 Coach Phil Collichio: 'We've got a chance to be very good and our confernce with Plainfield, Elizabeth and Shabazz, could be the very best in New Jersey. Our top six figure to be 6-9 senior Dan Busby (last season's leading scorer has grown a few inches, can still shoot and is learning to take the ball to the basket, 6-7 senior Jakeel Gary (St Benedict transfer has returned 'home' - his strength is his strength), 5-11 junior Tony Wilson (one of the best junior guards in the state), 6-3 senior Jason Thomas (our Mr. Versatile, can play one through four on our team) and two 6-0 seniors (Antoine Suggs, the shooter and Shane Guilette, the defender). Non-league games include the Tip Off Classic vs Bloomfield Tech, Primetime matchups against Elizabeth and St Augustine, two Phillie Catholic schools in the Wildwood tournament, Cranford in the Bernowski Games in late January and a game against St Anthony. As always, our primary goal will be to win the conference.'

LI Lutheran, LI.  Long Island Lutheran is generally the fourth team in the Class A semifinal draw as the lone state private school in the classification. They play along with the state public school champs, the city public and private school champs. 10/27/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary (NYC): '...college coaches have said to me that LI Lutheran's 6'3 sr. Brandon Wilson sg will be choosing D1 Wagner (NEC).'  11/1/01 BUCBUC3: 'We lost AJ Price and Nick Carter, both due to academics. Lutheran will proberly start pg Chikarris McBrown 5'10, 2g Brandon Wilson 6'3, sf Arthur Onuora 6'5, pf John Buck 6'8, and c Kobe Pruitt 6'6 The team will rely on Brandon Wilson and Arthur Onoura for offense. Brandon returns after having a stellar summer at ABCD, Rucker and UDC winning championships and MVP awards for the spring and summer leagues.'

Lincoln, Brooklyn, NY.  10/28/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary (NYC): PSAL Preview 2001-2002.  Lincoln # 3 -- Coach Dwayne Morton has the best pg in the country on his team. The biggest question in everybodys mind at the end of last season was "Well who is Sebastian going to throw the ball to, himself?" Now enter Elijah "Karon" Clarke a 6'5 transfer from D.C. who is one of the best forwards in the PSAL. Also, role players such as Dominic Osei 6'3 jr. foreward along with various other players will try to take Lincoln and it's super soph to his first every PSAL Championship game.'  12/2/01 NY Post: Sebastian Telfair -- Fair Game!  12/11/01 Newsday: Lincoln Fried by Rice. 12/11/01 RivalsHoops: Sebastian Telfair Worth The Price Of Admission.

Monsignor McClancy, NY 10/24/01 Winston Kelly: 'Monsignor McClancy - Crusaders.  The Crusaders led by seniors 6'3 Elvis Damjanovic, 5'10 Anthony Mauceri, 6'4 Richard Stankowski and 6'3 Jordan Diminich. Experience and scoring will come in the form of junior guards 6'2 Wesley Mathews and 5'10 Joe Vargas.'  CHSAA Media Guide: 'The Crusaders are looking to improve on last season's 10-16 record.  Anthony Mauceri (5-9) point guard and Elvis Damjanovic (6-4) senior forward will serve as the co-captains of this year's team. Senior Richard Stankowski (6-5) has improved and will be counted upon to step up and have a good final season.  Joe Vargas (5-9) and Wesley Matthews (6-2) both played on the varsity last year as sophomores and are expected to be starters this year.'

Mt Vernon, NY  12/10/01 Matt Grasso: 'They will be tough as they are every year. They lose a Big East prospect in Ben Gordon. However, they return many key players from last year's class A regional championship team. They will be led by senior captains Jomo Belfor and Will Cherry once again. They have been playing together in leagues such as IS8 and west 4th street since the end of last season to improve. Bob Cimmino is as good a coach as they come. Expect another county title run from this squad.'

Newtown, NY. The Pioneers play in Queens I division with Edison, Springfield Gardens, Forest Hills, Jamaica, Hillcrest and Bryant. They finished last season with a 22 - 4 record and a quarterfinal loss to the eventual PSAL champion, JFK.  9/30/01 Coach Rod Bussey: 'Alberto Ortiz is a junior at Newtown High. Pat Torney is the head coach. Alberto is a player to watch this year. Alberto played 4 tournament with my AAU team, East New Yorkers. Alberto is about 6" 1" and he primarily a 1 or 2.'  12/1/01 Coach Pat Torney: 'The 2000-2001 Newtown Pioneers should again be competing for the division championship and hopefully will play an integral part in the city play-offs this year.

While only returning one starter from the 1999-2000 quarter-finalist team, the Pioneers finished with a 16-10 overall record and won 5 tournaments last year. Newtown defeated defending champions John F.Kennedy in the 1st round of the playoffs and lost in the second round to #5 seed Park West HS, 58-53.

Two key losses to graduation are 6'4" forward Johnnie Carter and 6'4" Center Jamel Moye who have both moved on to play at Rockland CC this year. Point guards Tristan Verette (disciplinary reasons) and Tamer Gabriel (discipline, academics) have been dropped from the team, so the backcourt is somewhat inexperienced at the point with junior Chris Ruiz and soph Eugene Waldo sharing the responsibilities. 6'3" Steve Duran will start at the shooting guard position, and his 3 years of varsity experience should help settle down the backcourt. 6'1 swingman Miguel Maria, who is better known for being one of the PSAL's top pitchers, and 6'0" Alberto Ortiz will also help in bringing the ball up this year.

6'4" junior Andre Cole and 6'5" senior Bobby Pandy will lead the frontcourt. Both players are extremely athletic and can get out and run the floor well which is quite a change from last year's smash-mouth style of up-front play. The center position should be shared by 6'5" seniors Karolis Maciulskis and Junior Fernandez. Both gained valuable experience last year playing behind Carter and Moye.

Important addittions from the junior varsity include guards Jake Choi, Charles Del Rosario and Jeffrey Pena. All are very good shooters and handlers.

This is the first time 2 freshman have made the varsity at Newtown and will see quality playing time. Kevin Huggins and Eric Rosa can both match up physically on the varsity level and their offensive skills should get them some quality p.t. this year.

The Pioneers are deeper and quicker this year so they should be able to play an up-tempo style without getting tired. Although they're young in the backcourt, the experienced front line should help to overcome any problems due to inexperience. We are looking to continue the success we have enjoyed the last six years. During that time, we have amassed a 109-37 record while winning 3 division championships, made two quarterfinal appearances and were PSAL finalists in 1997. Newtown has gone to at least the second round of the play-offs 5 of the last 6 years and hopes to continue that tradition this year.

We won the New Utrecht Thanksgiving Classic, defeating South Shore in the championship game 58-53. We also won the Game Over/Pal Thanksgiving Classic by beating John Jay 81-70. We are playing in the Nazareth HS Kingsmen classic saturday, December 8, against St. John the Baptist. We also have our own tournament, the Pioneer Classic, on Dec. 15 at St. Francis College. There are 4 games that day; we play Beach Channel HS at 12:45.'

Neptune, NJ. Neptune began last season ranked # 12 in the state by NJ Hoops and finished ranked # 11 with a 20-6 record losing only to Atlantic City, Camden Wilson, St Raymond, Middletown South, CBA and Camden Their primary star is 6-1 junior guard, Tyquan Dean (NJH # 4) and he's joined in the backfield by fellow junior, 5-10 Terrance Todd (NJH # 22 There's help from 6-6 junior center Robert Layton (NJH #63) and two highly regarded sophs - 6-1 Marcus Alston (NJH # 37) and 5-11 Jamar Pressley (NJH # 94). Marcus Jones, Eugene Harris and Jamal Williams were also on the Neptune Metro Classic roster. Coach Ken O'Donnell has completed nine seasons with a 165 - 81 record. Last year was his best but this year the Scarlet Fliers could easily be better. 11/25/01 DaddyBnice:  'I am waiting to see where you will rank Neptune in your poll this season. With Tyquan Dean, Robert Layton 6' 7, Marcus Alston 6'4, Eugene Harris 6' 5, and Terrance Todd 6' 0 this crew can play with anybody.'  11/27/01 DaddyBnice: 'Just knowing about Tyquan Dean who had been highly recruited, and was Rick Pitino's first recuit, would make you aware of his high school. The Star Ledger of Newark will have them in their top five in Jersey. Check people in Jersey who know h.s. ball about their winning tradition. Passaic  7/15/01 JSHUTTLESWURTH: 'Passaic looked good at the Metro losing a close game to Seton Hall Prep and they missed a lot of open shots out there today that I expect to change by the time state playoff time comes.'  7/16/01 BRO: 'Passaic was only mildly disappointed to lose to Seton Hall Prep, 45-40, in the quarterfinals after winning its first three games. After all, its four Metro Classic games were its only games of the summer. "This was really the first time we played together all summer," rising senior forward Edwin Muniz said. "Wait until the season." Four starters will return from the team that went 25-2 last season and reached the NJSIAA Group 4 final, including the 6-6 Muniz, 6-3 forward Jafaar Johnson and 5-9 guard Clayton Barker. But instead of concentrating on competitive summer play, the team has been focusing on weightlifting and fundamentals.'  7/16/01 BRO:  Passaic - Very little rust.

Paterson Catholic, NJ. The Cougars dominated Passaic county boys' basketball from 1993 through 1998. befrore some lean years. But they're back, now. Their final game last season was a 87 - 61 loss to St Patrick in the Parochial B North semis. Since then, 6-10 junior transfer Darryl Watkins (NJH # 3) has been barred, then reinstated to this year's team. Darryl and 6-3 Marquis Webb (NJH #4) are the team stars, joined by 6-3 junior Sydir Mitchell (NJH # 32) and 6-0 Thomas McBride (NJH #84) with 6-7 senior Terron Scudder (NJH #77). The last man in the rotation is 5-8 sophomore and point guard heir apparent, Stephen Brown (NJH # 31). Kwatell Patterson at 6-5 and Hakim Bailey at 6-6 are two touted freshmen who may have the size and talent to contribute this year. 9/29/01 NJO:  Judge reinstates tranfers - Darryl Watkins and Collin Bailey - barred by NJSIAA ruling. 10/4/01 BRO: NJSIAA plans appeal: Eligibility ruling for Darryl Watkins and Collin Bailey surprises group.

Peekskill, NY 11/1/01 Westechester Team Rankings -- They had a tough team last year which lost in the county championship game. Their whole team is back and even hungrier than last year. Rashard Turner will pace them once again at the guard position along with 6'9'' post player Hilton Armstrong. These two are both solid division 1 prospects that will be tough for any team to match up against.Coach Panzanaro is a winner every year and this year should be one of Peekskill's finest.  11/4/01 Peter Abraham (The Journal News, Westchester): 'Rashard Turner and Hilton Armstrong haven't committed to anybody. Peekskill coach Lou Panzanaro, who has day-to-day involvement in the recruiting process of bolth players, said on Saturday night that the rumors are false. Rashard is considering Maine, Central Florida and Monmouth. Hilton has a long list of schools led by LaSalle. Both players are feeling pressure to decide. But both, particularly the ever-improving Armstrong, would be wise to wait.' 11/18/01 Poppi6266  'Coming off a 20-3 season, with a heart breaking loss to Nyack in the league B section tittle game. With alot of determination, this years team returns all of its starters fueled by first team All-Section Sr Rashard Turner. Turner who stands 5'11'' averaged 22pts per game is going to be the go to guy in Peekskill high-powered offense. Turner is a legit D1 player. Also returning 6'9'' Sr Hilton Armstong. Armstrong is expected to have a big season for the Devils. At 6'9'', he gives Turner a little bit of relief on the offensive end and should be a human block party on the other end of the court. Other returnees include 5'8'' Sr Keith Staton, 6'3'' Sr Brandon Speights, 6'7''Jr. Brandon Jackson. Peekskill has new faces in 6'1'' Jr Eric McDonald, 5'11'' Jr Brian Archer, 6'4 Jr Rodney Headly, and two very prospective underclassmen in 6'2'' Jr Chris Horton and 6'2'' Fr True Liscombe. One highlight of Peekskill's season is a game against St. Raymonds who definately is one of the top programs in the country, with top 50 player, Villanova signee Allan Ray. I think this years team is going to be the best team in the county regardless of class.' 12/10/01   Matt Grasso: 'They had a tough team last year which lost in the county championship game. Plainfield, NJ  10/01 tbone @ Watchung Conference site:  The Cardinals return the top backcourt in the Watchung Conference with Andre Dabney, Jahid Muhammad and Amar Dixon. Front court players will include Steven Clark and Jarred Wormley (both 6'4).'  11/01 Last year the Cardinals finished 21 - 5, ranked # 18 in the state.  The seniors, Dabney (NJH # 38) and Muhammad (NJH # 43) with junior Wormley (NJH HR) present an impressive trio.

Poly Prep, Brooklyn. 11/4/01 Coach Bill McNally: 'Poly Prep looks to win their fifth consecutive Ivy Prep League championship(the last two year's they were undefeated in their league) with four new players in the starting line up. The Blue Devils graduated four starters and their sixth man (all are playing college basketball). The 2000-2001 team led by Keith Williams (Colgate) and Ray Corrigan (Amherst) reached the Daily News/Madison Square Garden Network Top 20 for the second season in a row and scored impressive victories over non-league opponents St.Francis Prep, LaSalle, Long Island Lutheran and Xavier. They also went right down to the wire with P.S.AL. finalists Grady and Robeson. Their season ended after a 20 game win streak in the game to go to Glens Falls with an over-time loss to Dalton ( a team they had defeated three times already during the season). This years squad will be led by four year varsity player and three year starter Daniel Green. Green a 6'3" combo guard who is the only remaining player from Poly's state championship team captain by Andre Logan ( Princeton) and John Verzosa ( Middlebury )is currently being recruited by several Division One colleges. Green is a high flying scorer capable and comfortable with scoring in big numbers. Green's best game came vs. powerhouse Robeson where he had 28 points, 20 of which came in the second half. Green will be joined in the starting line up by point guard John Elefterakis and 6'3" swing man Jesse Tawil. 6'7" sophomore transfer Joakeim Noah will make an immediate impact for the Blue Devils. Poly's toughest league competition will come from several schools including Collegiate, Dalton, Hackley and Horace Mann. As always their non-league schedule is extremely difficult with a home game vs. St.Benedict's and on the road vs. Long Island Lutheran. This year the Blue Devils are doing a lot of traveling with appearances in the Peddie School Tournament in New Jersey and the Bullis School Tournament in Maryland where they will open with Cardinal Gibbons. Poly will also play a game in Connecticut at Yale University vs. Hamden Hall.'

Rice, NYC. 10/24/01 Winston Kelly: 'Rice High School - Raiders.  The Raiders will be anchored by junior Center 7'3 Shagari Alleyne, major contributors to the Raiders success this year will be seniors 5'8 Keydren Clark, 6'0 Jason Wingate, 6'0 Steven Burtt, Jr., 6'4 Christian Brown, as well as keep your eyes on impact sophomores 6'2 Russell Robinson and 6'6 Arturo Dubois.'   10/01 Student Sports Preseason FAB 50 National Basketball Rankings: 10. Rice (New York, N.Y.) 13-11 The entire starting cast returns for this New York Catholic League contender, which plays a national-caliber schedule. St. Anthony, Jersey City, N.J. (27-3),  8. All Hallows, Bronx, N.Y. (22-4) and 19. Rice, New York, N.Y. (13-11).  Returning starters: 5. Outlook: At 7-2, junior Shagari Alleyne is an inside force. Guards Jason Wingate, Keydren Clark (15 ppg) and 6-4 Christian Brown are reliable scorers. Next: Dec. 9 vs. Lincoln (Brooklyn) at Fordham University.

Robeson, Brooklyn, NY. 10/28/01 Nathan Blue's Real Scout Hoop Summary (NYC): PSAL Preview 2001-2002.  Robeson # 1 -- It's the same story every year. Robeson has good big men. This year everyone said with Kenny Adeleke headed to Hofstra. Robeson would have a pretty small squad. Nope not the case for Larry Major's crew. Shakeem Mitchell 6'8 PF decided to go back home to Brooklyn and leave the very talented Rice HS.  So Gary Ervin, Ontea Gates, Aaron Harvey and Keith Willis are back and ready to win the championship which they were so close to capturing last season.'  12/06/01 Daily News: This Ervin Is Magic Robeson star following long line of City guards

Seton Hall Prep, NJ. In what everyone agreed was a rebuilding year, Seton Hall Prep finished last season with a 25 - 3 record ranked # 6 by NJO. They won the Parochial North championship beating Roselle Catholic 53 - 42, before losing the Parochial A championship game to Camden Catholic 56 - 51 in overtime. This year's team will be led by  6-1 sr Anthony Drejaj (NJH # 12),  6-5 sr. Sean Bell (NJH # 91),  6-2 sr Eric Fleet (NJH hr),  6-4 jr Alex Busbee (NJH # 29) and  5-11 jr Shayle Keating (NJH # 38).The star freshman is 6-1 Anthony Pusar.  Their one tournament will be the Beach Ball Classic, December 26-30  @Myrtle Beach, South Carolina  with a first round matchup against St. Joseph from Cleveland, Ohio.  Lincoln and CBA will also be at Myrtle Beach. 11/4/01 Frank McCree: 'Flaherty has graduated and junior backup Shale Keating takes over at the point. He'll have 6-3 Jamar Nutter (1st team All county) and 6-2 Anthony Drejaj (AP 2nd team All state) on the wings. 6-5 Eric Bell 6-3 Alex Buzbee Add 6-4 junior Pat McCrossan also seeing action. There are three highly touted freshmen on the way up who may begin the season on the JV. I see them as a top 10 team. St. Anthony is head and shoulders over everyone and St. Patricks may be a shade over the Pirates. Not big, but very physical. The Hall has the best coach in the state. A very experienced team, even though there are only 2 starters. Could be a year away from winning it all. Head and shoulders over everyone else in Essex.County. 11/23/01 Frank McCree: 'The Pirates should take back their Essex County Tournament championship after loaning it to Shabazz for one year. But Bergen Catholic, Paterson Catholic, and Camden Catholic are standing in the Hall's path for a Parochial A state title. 5-10 Junior Shayle Keating takes over the point guard duties after being the team's 6th man last season. Returning wingmen 6-2 senior Anthony Drejaj and 6-2 junior Jamar Nutter will lead the scoring in Bob Farrell's discliplined offense. Drejaj was tabbed to the Associated Press' 2nd team all-state squad in 200-01. 6-5 senior Sean Bell and a pair of 6-4 junior football players Alex Buzbee and Pat McCrossan will share time in the front court. Chris Swan, Erica Fleet and Rory Verducci will play reserve roles.  A trio of super frosh will start the season on j.v., but could be heard from by tournament time.'  3/11/01 NJO: Seton falls in OT to Camden Catholic.

Shawnee  10/01 Student Sports Preseason FAB 50 National Basketball Rankings: '34. Shawnee (Medford, N.J.) 25-3. Four starters and some promising underclass prospects return for the defending state Group Four championship team. Seniors Zach Martin (6-5) and Henrick Nielsen, junior Bill Kurtz and sophomore Brett Johnson will carry the load.'  11/3/01 REM35 33:  'Street & Smith has Shawnee 16th in the country which is fun but I think they are a true 6' 8'' or so center from being there. They were 28 & 3 last year losing to Shabazz in the semis of T of C. They beat a good Passaic team for the Group IV state championship with Zach getting 17 points and the MVP. They beat Florence in the 1st round (Group 1 Champ) of the T of C before losing to Shabazz. They have 4 starters back and only lose center Mike Wlodaczyk. Zach will start with Junior point guard Bill Kurtz, Soph. forward Bret Johnson ( 6'4'') Sr.forward Henrik Neilsen (6'5'') and probably Sr. center Pat Robey (6'5''). Junior swing man Dan McDonald (6'3") will see a lot of time even if he ends up not starting. Dan starts both ways on the football team and takes awhile to get his hoop legs. Kurtz is the starting quaterback and probably will start slow as well.  Coach Kessler told me they were forced to turn down Xmas tournament invites to the Beachball in S.C. and another in Kentucky due to antiquated NJSIAA rules prohibiting playing 4 games in a week and/or 3 games in three days. They are going to Wildwood at Xmas to play 2 games. The opening game is on the road vs Camden Catholic. It will be a tough start with that game followed by Lenape on the road. Besides the league games they are scheduled to play Harrisburg in the Battle by the Bay, Neptune in the Primetime and a good Middle Twp team at Xmas. St Dominic, LI. 10/29/01 Robert Pavinelli, coach of St. Dominic Bayhawks: 'St. Dominic lost five of its top six from a team that had gone 40-11in the last two years. It does however return two-year starter Tim Doyle who has committed to St. John's. Doyle, who had an excellent summer and has worked hard to improve his shooting, will look to lead an inexperienced, but talented, group. Key returning players include vastly improved 6' 7 Brian Houlihan, looking at Vermont, Harvard, Yale and Colgate as well as a pair of 6' 3 swingmen in Alex Patsos and Rob Rottkamp. Both Patsos and Rottkamp are being recruited by a number of Div.2 and Div. 3 schools. In the backcourt, St. Doms will be looking to 3 guards from a 25-1 JV team of last year, 6'1 Tom Paul, 6'1 Leigh Moglia and 6'1 Brian Leach. Providing help up front will come from 6'4 Steve Bilello, also from last years JV. Talented sophomore swingman Dwayne Whitfield will be looked upon to provide scoring, defense and quickness. Serge Clement plays JV and Sherva Jones was cut from the varsity team. I'm not sure who wrote the profile but there are some errors.'  12/12/01 Eric Jaklitsch: 'Does anyone know what happened to 6'8 Julian Thomas? He was supposed to be playing at St John's Prep this year but I did not see his name in the CHSAA media guide. Has he transfered to a PSAL or a prep school? If anyone knows any info about this talented junior let me know.'  Coach Kevin Ppigott: 'Julian is playing at St. John's Prep. He has the potential to be a force not just in the "B" division but also in the CHSAA.'   Coach Pete Goyco: 'Julian Thomas was on the roster in the program for Brother Arnold Tournament. He is listed at 6'8".  Louis Xifaras: 'Julian is playing for St. John's Prep. I saw him play 3 games at the Brother Arnold Tournament at McClancy High School, which St. John's won. Julian does not even start for the team and did not make good decisions throughout the tournament.  However the potential for this player is tremendous.'

St. John the Baptist West Islip, NY 11/17/01 SJB Basketball: 'Despite returning seven players from last year's squad, St. John the Baptist (West Islip, NY) will have a very different look this season. A team much improved, the Cougars lose only one starter from last season and will be viable contenders for the NSCHSAA "B" Championship.

Led by seniors Marvin Cheese (14 ppg, 6 assts.) and Donald Brown (16 ppg), SJB has one of the best duos in the league. Cheese (6'2"), a four-year starter and probable 1,000-point scorer, is regarded by many as one of the top guards on Long Island. Brown, a 6'5" swingman, can play all five positions on the floor. To make up for the team's lack of size, third year coach JD Walsh will look to play an uptempo style and utilize his team's athleticism. Also returning for SJB are seniors Rich Cronin (5'8")and Chris Fritch (6'4"), juniors Ryan Johnson (6'2") and Paul Reda (5'10"), and sophomore Nick Georgetti (6'1"). This year's squad will be deeper with the additions of transfers Kevin Spann (5'10"), Mickell Vickers (6'1"), and Leslie Augustin (6'1"), as well as JV call-ups Matt Domanico (5'10"), Pete Lehmann (6'3"), and Ryan McArdle (6'0"). Look for Spann, Vickers, and Augustin to have an immediate impact in the rotation for the Cougars.

In addition to their always tough league schedule, which includes perennial powers St. Mary's and St. Dominic, the Cougars have a very formidable non-league schedule, which includes LI Lutheran, Holy Cross, St. Edmund Prep, Cathedral Prep, Newtown, Greenport, Long Beach, and the Northeast Catholic Basketball Classic at St. Joseph's (Trumbull, CT). In the league, Chaminade, Holy Trinity, Kellenberg, and St. Anthony's will provide stiff competition for the class "B" championship.'

St Mary, Manhasset, LI. 11/5/01 Coach Tim Cluess ' The Gaels come off a 25-1 season which ended in a loss in the Catholic state final in a great game. Four starters are gone so the team will be playing with a lot of new faces and one familiar one. Returning starter Momadou Diakhate - 6'5" 220 lbs. is all he's made out to be. He is a great player who will only get better with more seasoning. Can do it all and makes his teammates better by his presence. Keith Tilley - 6'5"guard has turned into an outstanding college prospect. Excellent slasher, ball handler, rebounder, passer and defender who can also shoot. Has taken a big step forward with his game. Jared Weir - 6'4" guard excellent shooter and athlete. Runs the floor, handles, rebounds, blocks shots and can get to the basket. Both were key reserves on last years team. They should have big seasons. The remaining spots are up in the air with about 8 players looking for time.6'6" jr. Bill Clarke is an excellent shooter, 6'4" jr. Tim Wall is developing into an all around guard that can fill it up,6'3" LeJohn McFadden and 6'3" Devon Jarvis (both jr.'s.) give a lot of intensity and athleticism and both can shoot and slash as well as rebound. Sophomore Dan Bala will be pushing for the starting pt. guard spot against senior Paul Tricarico who is much improved and looks ready to up his game a level. Frank Gilroy a 6'4" senior shooting guard will add extra shooting to the team as will 6'1" junior, Dan Nolan. The Gaels are looking forward to another strong season no matter where they place us for the playoffs. As the CHSAA is a strange group we will not be classified until February. Again, it will depend on whose interests they are trying to serve this time.'

St Patrick, NJ  3/9/01 Frank McCree:  'Saint Anthony 37 Saint Patricks 32 '  10/01 Student Sports Preseason FAB 50 National Basketball Rankings: # 31. St. Patrick's (Elizabeth, N.J.) 21-7 The Celtics face another challenging schedule but return some promising underclassmen, including two touted junior prospects in 6-10 center Grant Billmeier and 6-1 point guard Michael Nardi. Also on hand are senior Paul Williams (6-8) and sophomore Derek Character (6-7).'  10/25/01 PrepStar Hoop Scoop: 'Yesterday we talked with Ray Miller, who is one of the assistant coaches at Elizabeth (St. Patrick) NJ, and he brought us up-to-date on the recruitment of 6'9 Paul Williams, 6'5 Mawel Soler, 6'10 Jr Grant Billmeier, and 6'1 Jr Michael Nardi. Williams is coming on like gangbusters and, as a result, would be a steal for Siena, Drexel, or Cleveland State, which are the schools that have shown the most interest to-date. However, Pittsburgh is getting involved and, if Williams waits until spring, you can bet a lot of other Big East schools will also start calling. The top three for Soler are Fairleigh Dickinson, Central Connecticut State, and Wagner. Billmeier's favorite school is Duke, but Villanova, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, and Virginia are the schools that have been showing the most early interest. Nardi has a similar list that includes Seton Hall, Rutgers, Maryland, and Virginia. ... Miller didn't want to touch the question about whether 6'7 Derrick Character from Scotch Plains, NJ, who is the #1-ranked 8th grader in the nation by the Hoop Scoop, will enroll at St. Patrick's next fall. However, just about everybody else we've talked with assume it's already a done deal. If you will recall, Character has been attending the St. Patrick's basketball camp since he was in elementary school and, as a result, he already has a strong pre-existing relationship with Boyle. Sure, we've heard the speculation about Character opting to attend four years of high school at a basketball factory, like Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA or Rockville (Montrose Christian) MD, but we've also heard that there is no way he's going to leave the North Jersey area due to the close relationship he has with his grandmother.'  10/29/01 NJ Hoops: St. Pat's in Nike Holiday Tournament. 11/01 Typical ly brutal national schedule includes games against Neptune and Pat Cat on 12/15 & 12/16 for Tip Off Classic @ Seton Hall University, vs nationally ranked Westchester, Ca  in late December @ Academy National Invitational in Houston, Texas, a Groundhog's Day meeting with Williamsport, @ Williamsport, Pennsylvania High School. and two games during Feruary's Prime Time Shootout, one vs Linden, the other against Oak Hill Academy. Big time sophomore 6'3 Brian Laing adds depth.'  11/7/01 Ehova2k1: 'Two respected sopohomores from St. Raymond's, Gavin Grant and Brian Laing will improve the Ravens Varsity team inside play. Brian Laing is as strong as any player in his class, and Gavin Grant's jump shot is as good as Juluis Hodge. With these two young superstars look for a thrid city championship and for their second state championship in a row.'

Their schedule this year includes the most competitive league in Jersey the NNJIL in which they play Bergen Catholic, Passaic, Don Bosco Prep, Paramus Catholic, Clifton, and Kennedy. They also play Elizabeth and are in the Hackensack Christmas tournament. This team will compete for the Group 4 sectional title and Bergen County championship this year. Even though Teaneck lost a lot from last year's squad they have been playing together all summer and expect to be competitive.'  3/3/01 BRO: Sean Persons energizes Teaneck.

Leading the Justice this year is 5'6 Sr. point guard Miguel Moreno and Jr. shooting guard James Dorismond. The Justice will have to muster offense thru defensive schemes and trapping after losing five seniors including all-city selection PG Donte Taylor and SG Johnuel Fland.  This should be a struggle for the Justice year but help is on the way next year when future sophomores SG John Duncan (5'10), C Karejah Cornelius (6'3), PG Isaiah Walker (5'8), PF Justin Conyers (6'4) are able to lend support.'

Union, NJ Coach Bob Grauso.3/01 'The Union Farmers ended last season with a loss to Newark Eastside 63 - 60 in the Group 4 North Section 2 semifinals as Randy Foye scored 23 points.  11/01 tbone @ Watchung Conference site: 'Big Ruben Polo and company will have to try and keep the winning going in Farmer land.'  3/01 The Union Farmers ended last season with a loss to Newark Eastside 63 - 60 in the Group 4 North Section 2 semifinals as Randy Foye scored 23 points. 11/6/01 Coach Bob Grauso 'The Union Farmers come into the 2000-2001 season with a whole new lineup. After graduating 10 seniors who went the section semifinals and won 14 games last year including wins over three County Champions (Linden in Union County, Colonia in Middlesex County and Phillipsburg in Hunterdon County) and quality wins over top 20 programs such as Plainfield, Montclair and Eastside, it will be tough for the Farmers to match that success. Union will be inexperienced and the loss of All-County Guard Chris Chadwick (Globe JC - 20ppg) will be hard to replace. The Farmers will be led by returning senior forwards Kelvin Porter and Kenny Clemons. who have the most varsity experience. Also shooting guard senior Mike Tigeliero, leading scorer from last years JV's will see time with a rotation of a pair of young but talented guards in Jr. Alain Eugene and soph. Sam Cherlius. Junior forwards Ruben Polo (86th ranked Jr. by NJ hoops) and Greg Malval should help up front. Playing in what many people consider the best Conference in New Jersey, the Watchung Conference, Union hopes to compete with the likes of Elizabeth. Newark Eastside, Linden and Plainfield which all should be top 20 teams in the state.'

Walt Whitman, LI 10/25/01 adidas_a: 'Walt Whitman High School on Long Island has a fantastic four this year in Matt Ross 6'7, Brian Faustin 6'9, Antoine Agudio 6'4 and Nick Carter 6'1. They should give Amityville a run for their money.'

White Plains, NY. With their two star seniors, 6-5 wing Markus Austin and 6-0 point guard Jason Bayuk and many solid role-players, coach Spencer Mayfiled's charges were impressive last year.  11/1/01 Westechester Team Rankings 'They flat out play the best defense in the county. Defense is what wins games. They lose Division 1 prospect Markus Austin to graduation, but they come back with Dino Dwyer inside and Shonte Sasser lighting it up on the outside. Jeff Lee is one the best defenders in the county and expect him to disrupt any offense. These were sectional finalists last year and they will be tough to beat.'
